By RICK KARLIN SCHODACK — This is not your father’s union battle. This month, union disputes have taken center stage in the Capital Region as efforts to organize both multinational corporations and tiny nonprofit organizations have grabbed local headlines.
Both are examples of how union organizing has gone far beyond the traditional picketing events that marked such conflicts in the past. Picket lines are still used by unions, but these new organizing units are broadening theirTheretactics.arereasons for this. For one thing, the people organizing at Amazon, as well as those working to organize more than two dozen Starbucks coffee shops in New York, are operating largely on their own, rather than being directed from large national unions. They also are using all the social media tools at their disposal – which explains the use of a GoFundMe page. “As we are seeing an upsurge in union organizing right now, including in sectors that have not traditionally had unions, cyberspace is increasingly becoming a space for contention between organizing workers and their employers,” said Todd Vachon, an assistant professor of labor studies and employment relations at
noprovesTriathleteblindnessobstacle
And while different, the conflicts between Amazon and the Capital Roots nonprofit and their respective union groups represent two sides of what’s happening in a growing but changing labor movement in the United States. In one instance, hundreds of warehouse workers are taking on Amazon, one of the world’s richest corporations.
PAUL GRONDAHL / SPECIAL TO THE TIMES UNION AVERILL PARK — Night had fallen and Megan Hale, a 21-yearold blind triathlete, had been swimming, cycling and running through the arduous mountain terrain of the Adirondacks for more than 16 hours straight. Physically exhausted and emotionally spent, she had a meltdown on the final stretch in the grueling able.seemedSheas26.2-mileswim,punishmentlong-distance–2.4-mile112-milebikeandrun–knownIronmanLakePlacid.hitthewall.Itinsurmount-Tearscame.And
In the other, about 20 idealistic people who work for Capital Roots, a charity devoted to food equity, are suddenly battling theirThesebosses.two fights might portend what could be more labor unrest going forward, as Amazon employees nationwide are inquiring about unionizing, and as more and more human service nonprofits like Capital Roots, which are often thinly funded, face union drives of their own. At Amazon’s fulfillment center in Schodack, union activists have started a GoFundMe page for workers they say were fired for supporting the ongoing organizing effort. That comes as organizers say people are being harassed and fired for signing union cards, a contention that AmazonEighteendenies.miles to the north, a battle with far fewer people but with a broad footprint is being played out as Capital Roots, a venerable Troy nonprofit, is locked in conflict with SEIU 200, the union that Capital Roots earlier this summer voluntarily recognized. Amid increasingly hostile relations, Capital Roots Executive Director Amy Klein last week said they were canceling their long-standing fundraising gala, Autumn Evening, due to harassment from their new union. While Capital Roots employs only about 20 people, the cancellation will likely rebound through the Capital Region’s donor class of professionals and business people who typically patronize such fundraisers.

Will the next great breakthrough be no more cruelty to animals? More and more attention is being given to plant based foods. Jokes 1. I asked the TV station if I could read my ad on TV. The answer was no. I asked why not. The answer was, “It is classified information.”2.I love my HP Windows. You don’t have to wash them. 3. Did the doctor give you a clean bill of health? No, he will not do this until my check clears. 4. The football team declined its invitation to the Sugar Bowl because the quarterback has diabetes. 5. A woman was married 4 times. Annual Library Election and Budget Vote East Greenbush Community Library Annual District election will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. at the library located at 10 Community Way E. Greenbush. The 2023 budget was prepared with an eye toward maintaining the services and programs so valued by our community while still supporting library efforts to innovate and evolve. Four major considerations drove the development of the 2023 budget: 1. Maintain quality library services by providing vibrant physical and virtual spaces, developing diverse collections and programs, investing in technology safety and security, and supporting library staff who make this happen.2.Join more than 25 UHLS libraries by migrating to “Fine Free” in January 2023, eliminating most fees for the late return of items. 3. Ensure the library’s long-term sustainability by replenishing reserve accounts to mitigate the financial impact of necessary but costly building repairs.
4. Offer transparency to the community by including all income and expenses, including gift, grant, and capital income and expenses, in the voter approved budget.

Heather Goodall, who is organizing the effort at Schodack, contends that workers in recent months have been fired for signing union cards, which could ultimately lead to a vote on whether the facility should be unionized. Since June, union organizers have filed a half dozen complaints with the National Labor Relations Board alleging the company has retaliated against employees who support the union. Those complaints are currently under“Ourreview.employees are being fired left and right,” Goodall said. The company has let 10 employees go in the last two weeks alone, she said. With that in mind, the Alb1 Schodack Union Employee Retaliation Fund on GoFundMe was created to assist those who the union says have been unfairly let go for their unionizing activities. Alb 1 is the name of the Schodack facility. Since it was created last week, the fund has raised $2,470 as of Thursday with a goal of $10,000.Amazon officials refute Goodall’s charges about the“Wefirings.donot retaliate against employees for exercising their federally protected rights. We work hard to accommodate our team’s needs, but like any employer, we ask our em-
ployees to meet certain minimum expectations and take appropriate and consistent action when they’re unable to do that,” Amazon spokesman Paul Flaningan said in an email.“They accused me of stealing from the kiosk,” said Orlando Santiago, who was recently let go from the Schodack center after he signed a card supporting a union vote. His supervisors said he had taken small bags of chips and other food items from a snack kiosk for employees without paying for them, a charge he denies. “I asked them for proof,” he said. Santiago said he earned $15.95-an-hour as a “picker” or worker who moves items from the series of 30-foothigh shelves to spots where they are packaged, addressed and sent out to loading docks for shipping. Best described as a large warehouse, Alb 1 is a “fulfillment center” where relative bulky items like flat screen TVs, air fryers or vacuums are sorted and packaged for shipping.

At Amazon, the fight may be less personal but it’s just as Workersintense. there also want better pay that starts at $15.70 per hour. But a major complaint also centers on what workers contend is the rapid pace of work they say is leading to injuries. The Amazon push is part of a trend in which workers at the facilities nationwide have intermittently sought to organize.Employees at more than 100 Amazon facilities have at least reached out to the nascent Amazon Labor Union, according to several news accounts. So far, though, just one, on Staten Island, has voted to unionize. Amazon is contesting that vote. More than 8,000 workers are employed at the Staten Island facility while the Schodack center has about 900.

Santiago said he’d like his job back but also was looking at working for the ShopRite supermarket chain. Goodall said Amazon supervisors have used a number of pretexts to fire union activists, including charges that they have used up their allotments of time off when they were actually taking sick days or medical leave. Some have been rehired, she said. (The Times Union was unable to confirm with Amazon how many were broughtWorkerback.)complaints, she added, centered around what she said was the lack of proper equipment such as scanning devices or ill-fitting safety harnesses that workers wear when ascending the shelf areas on the special forklifts, which the driver controls to reach items. Others, she said, have been let go for failing to meet Amazon’s “fast start” policy of quickly getting to work at the beginning of a shift. But she that’s because the forklift devices often need to be fueled up, which takes time at the start of the day. Flaningan also disputed that, saying workers are provided with all the equipment they need. “We have enough equipment, and in the uncommon case there ever is an issue it’s addressed immediately and in the moment,” he said. “The health and safety of our employees is always our top priority, and overall, we have robust safety protocols and more than 8,000 safety professionals across our operations who work every day to support our teams.” Like other disputes, the Capital Region’s labor fights are also veering into the region’s political structure. SEIU employees have reached out to local city and legislative officials with their complaints about Capital Roots. That puts lawmakers, largely Democrats, in the position of having to finesse or perhaps mediate between a politically powerful union and well-known nonprofit that has long-standing progressive bona fides. Ultimately, once a union is recognized such as SEIU, the two sides will have to sit down, said Rebecca Kolins Givan, who also is an associate professor management and labor relations at Rutgers University. “It’s hard to reach a contract. But if there is sufficient commitment, it can be done.”
“We urged those supporters to make their own decisions about their participation and attendance,” SEIU organizer Sean Collins said. “That many of those supporters, volunteers, vendors and donors decided to pull out of the fundraiser is the result of Amy’s actions, not ours,” he added, referring to Amy Klein. While Capital Roots said some chefs had been discouraged from participating in the event, six of the 13 featured event chefs reached by the Times Union said they had not been contacted by anyone. On the other hand, one unnamed volunteer cited a letter the person received urging a boycott of Autumn Evening.TheAug.

Rutgers University. To be sure, picket lines are still a Thetool.SEIU 200 union picketed Capital Roots earlier this month, saying they might picket the September gala. But this wasn’t an ongoing picket line, such as the one that workers in, say, Waterford’s Momentive Performance Materials chemical plant maintained during a strike in 2016 and 2017. That picket line ran for weeks. And the Momentive strike was largely about pay and benefit cuts imposed by the Blackstone and Apollo investment groups that purchased Momentive from General Electric several years prior. At Capital Roots, workers said they want to make more than the $15-an-hour-or-less that many earn. But they also said they want more say in how things are run, including their workloads. And rather than skilled blue collar workers at Momentive, Capital Roots is largely staffed by individuals who believe in the organization’s mission of improving nutrition for underprivileged people. Both sides last week were trading blame for the demise of the Autumn Evening fundraiser.
5 letter, in which business names were redacted, read, “Congratulations on being a featured business at the Autumn Evening event at the Hilton Garden Inn on September 15th, 2022!.” It went on, though to criticize what the writer said was Klein’s treatment of employees since they had unionized and read, “I ask that you withdraw your support of their organization and of this event to demonstrate your support of workers in every industry from farm to table and throughout our community.”
(Continued on Next Pg.) TRIATHLETE CONTINUED FROM 1
Hale completed an associate degree at Hudson Valley Community College and began classes this fall at SUNY Brockport in a bachelor’s degree program for adapted physical education with the goal of working with blind students. She has her guide dog, Hero, a yellow Labrador retriever, with her on campus.
“I’ve been so lucky to have a really good support sys tem, a wonderful family and great teachers,” Hale said. She connected with Slyer because his wife, Kathy Sly er, taught Hale in middle school. Slyer is a triathlon coach and former skydiving instructor who runs Sky High Adventures, an adventure camp for youths. Bored and isolated during the coronavirus pandem ic, Hale joined the Averill Park Road Runners Club and decided to train with Slyer for Ironman Lake Placid. Her longest run at that point was 3 miles. She also had cycled no more than 5 miles and her longest swim was two laps in a “Ipool.knew we had our work cut out for us,” Slyer said. Her goal was to finish in less than 17 hours in order to qualify as an official finisher. Their training was intense and Slyer was careful in his coaching to keep Hale injury-free because she is prone to push herself. Swimming was the biggest challenge in the Ironman because swim mers kept knocking into Hale and getting tangled in the 3-foot tether that connected Hale to Slyer as he matched her stroke for stroke.“Ihad to keep pushing swimmers away. It was a challenge,” Slyer said. She logged personal bests in the swim (1:49:11) and bike (7:58:19) portions. Fatigued and injured during the final leg, the run, her marathon time was 6:54:08. She added 16 minutes in the transi tions between swimming, biking and ofoverallanofficialcompetitorcutoff.seconds16:58:01,Ironman101,Wearingrunning.bibnumberHalecompletedLakePlacidinlessthantwounderthe17-hourShewasthefinaltobegivenfinisherstatusandIronmanmedal.Herrankwas1,809out2,273competitors.
still, she kept going. She had something to prove. Before dawn July 24, Hale swam away from shore in Mirror Lake with jittery anticipation. At night, she struggled to push past the throbbing pain of injured arches on the soles of both feet, hobbling forward on New Balance sneakers, trying to gut out the final few kilometers. Her guide, 57-year-old John Slyer, tethered to Hale at the waist with a 3-foot elastic cord, was competing in his 19th Ironman Lake Placid. He frequently asked Hale to describe her pain on a scale of 1 to 10. As they trudged through the village and ap proached the finish on the Olympic speed skating oval, she whimpered that she was at a 9. “I was in a haze of runner’s pain,” recalled Hale, whose form of blindness allows her to sense brightness and make out vague shapes. The finishing stretch on the oval track was awash with illumination. “Here comes our blind runner,” an announcer said. Crowds cheered her on. Slyer kept close track of Hale’s time. Hobbled, she slowed to an 18-minute mile. He told her she had fallen behind a pace needed to complete the triathlon in 17 hours, the cut-off time for an official finisher. She would have to dig deeper and fight through the pain if she want ed a finisher’s medal. If she could speed up a little bit, she might have a shot at crossing the finish line just under the“Iwire.rantoward the light,” she said. Hale picked up her pace. Megan Hale has been blind since birth, diagnosed with Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA, a rare type of inher ited eye disorder that causes severe blindness at birth. It is found in two to three out of every 100,000 babies and is the most common cause of inherited blindness in childhood.Haleisthe second-oldest of four siblings. None of them inherited the condition. “I joke with my family that I got the bad sperm,” said Hale, who has a wicked sense of humor. She grew up in West Sand Lake. Her parents, Corinne and Bob Hale, run a family business, Bob’s Rental Center, which has equipment and tool rentals and offers small engine repairs. Hale grew up working there along with a younger sister and older brother and sister.
“My parents never treated me any differently than the others,” she said. She attended Averill Park public schools and graduat ed from Averill Park High in 2019 with the assistance of an aide for the visually impaired. Hale competed on the high school track team as a sprinter and in shot put and discus. She used Braille after her eyesight deteriorated as a teenager and she could no longer read very large print.

The SA Dunn & Company, LLC recently mailed a two-page color flyer to Rensselaer residents. In it, Dunn promised to “always live up to our responsibility in continuing a positive, fact-based dialogue” and asserted “Our operations are not contributing to any contamina tion in the surrounding environment.” I will pay $1000 to anyone else who can prove Dunn’s operations are not contaminating the surrounding envi ronment.Dunn, part of Texas-based Waste Connections, operates the Dunn construction and demolition debris dump next to the Rensselaer public school campus and in between Rensselaer and East Greenbush neighborhoods. In its flyer, Dunn noted that it had recently hosted a public information meeting concerning its permit renewal application but did not discuss what people said at this meeting. Many Rensselaer and East Greenbush residents passionately described the negative health impacts and ongoing quality of life challenges living for seven-plus years near the dump and/or along the Rensselaer city streets traversed by trucks entering and departing the dump. At this June 14 meeting, a Dunn employee promised

But this is a lot bigger than humid weather and weird temperatures, and this “bigger thing” is climate change. Now everyone knows about climate change, in this generation, we are taught of it at a young age, we know all about greenhouse gases, pesticides, and other fossil fuels affecting the earth. Almost any kid these days could ace a quiz easily when asked about climate change. But even though people have become more aware of climate change why is it rising at an alarming rate? increase in the human population, this has caused a need for more manufacturing of vehicles and other products, which leads to the mining of more materials. An example of this is deforestation and oil rigs. An increase in the human population also increases the rate of livestock farming, which believe it or not does actually affect climate change. Now while it is a commonly known fact that pollution is bad why is it still happening? A person could believe that with so many people aware of climate change it would go down not rise… but in retrospect, it is not that Whileeasy.everyone wants to do their part we rely on big companies to supply us with our everyday needs and wants without truly thinking of the effect. I am not say ing to go against your local grocery store and stop buying food, that is an unreasonable and unnecessary request, but there are other ways for an everyday person to help the fight against climate change. Simply turning off your lights, making an effort to reuse and recycle, and trying not to litter could help in the long run. This earth is our home and while climate change might not seem like a big issue to deal with if we keep on putting it off it will become more of an issue than it already is. Hiking is a wonderful hobby and great exercise as well as a great way to get in touch with nature! Let us teach you how to do it right! The art of “staying found” requires little more than a good map and compass, and the knowhow to use them properly. Today’s topographic maps are the best available, and magnetic compass models are well-designed for the modern navigator. Learning to use a compass and map together are fundamental skills each outdoorsman and woman should have. This contributes to your safety afield, and also to your success. This class offers an introduction to learning these skills, with classroom and in the field hands-on learning. All classroom materials are provided. *Our optional hike will be at Cherry Plain State Park. The hike is about 2 hours of easy scenic hiking. You will see two waterfalls, one on the trail and the other that you will use your new skills to find! The hike is tentatively planned for Saturday, April 15th (weather permitting).

This course is designed to be an introduction to the fundamentals of survival. It is a great way for beginners who are not yet comfortable with the idea of an overnight to begin learning about the backcountry and how to deal with wilderness emergencies. It’s also a great way for even experienced outdoorspeople to learn or refresh important fundamental skills. The focus of this program is a “modern” one with an emphasis on basic skills, equipment, and preparedness with the expectation of rescue within 72 hours. You will learn about the Seven Priorities of Survival (survival psychology, wilderness first aid, shelter, fire, signal, water and food), Rules of three, the 5 W’s and more. This course is a great way to learn basic skills, build confidence, and become more comfortable in the outdoors. Class will be classroom multi- media and presentations with some outdoor skill sessions. Participants will receive a small fire starter kit. This course is geared towards participants of varying skill, experience levels, and backgrounds so no prerequisites are required. We only require that you bring your sense of adventure and plenty of PMA (Positive Mental Attitude).
