As fall rapidly approaches, the biggest news in households with kids is the return to in person school. I have two littles under the age of 12, and their excitement far outpaces my worry of them being unvaccinated and in school. Kids are amazingly resilient and flexible on what they need to do. After a full year of remote learning and that change, they have easily moved to being in person and wearing a mask in school. They even remind me as I drop them off that they need to make sure they have their mask, hand sanitizer, and of course a snack. As scary as it is, these children show us how easy it really is to maintain a slightly modified way of life for the safety of all at the school. The teachers and employees at the school are yet again thrust into the front lines of making sure that our kids are safe and protected. Our teachers and now our first responders are again at the front lines of another wave of COVID infections, as we balance our lives again with our safety. Keep them all in our minds as this school year proceeds, while infections increase with the Delta variant moving through our communities. Are we going to be back in the situations we were in at the peak of this pandemic? We don’t know for sure. I do feel we’ll be back in how we support our neighbors and local businesses. As our group, we want to make sure you’re aware of your local news and businesses that need our support. I try every time to buy local and find those little nuggets of great businesses. Case in point, Darling Doughnuts in Saratoga. I have a little girl who takes after her dad with an unfettered love of donuts. Trying a donut with an Oreo cookie in the middle is right up her alley, while I prefer the classics. Needless to say, we were both very happy with our order this past weekend. Soon, it will be time to sample all the local apple cider donuts, which we will gladly partake. Fall is a great time for donut lovers! It’s a concerning time unfortunately. We’re not at a place where we can let our guards down against this virus. We have to be vigilant, safe and balance our life quality. Like the kids in school, I can wear my mask and help take care of all of our neighbors. Stay safe and take care! Sincerely,
Todd J. Peterson Publisher

North Greenbush Report by Councilwoman Mary Frances Sabo NORTH GREENBUSH - The town board unanimously approved the appointment of Professor Keith Hirokawa to the town’s Open Space Committee at its September meeting. Professor Hirokawa teaches at Albany Law School where his areas of expertise are environmental law and land use planning. The Open Space Com-
mittee is currently collaborating with the Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) on an extensive mapping project of the town’s natural and historic resources which will ultimately culminate in a Natural Resources Inventory. Professor Hirokawa’s talents in research and writing as well as his expertise in natural resources, land use law and environmental impact analysis will contribute greatly to the Open Space Committee. As I have written before, the Climate Smart Communities Committee that I chair is working steadfastly towards certifying the
town as a Climate Smart Community. The town is sponsoring an Electronics Recyling day on Saturday, September 18 at town hall from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. which will earn the town points towards its certification. The sweltering temperatures and torrential and damaging rains off this summer are reminders that climate change is real and continues to negatively impact North Greenbush and Rensselaer County. The town and Cornell Cooperative Extension will collaborate on a “Climate Visioning” task force on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 7:00 p.m at Town
Hall, 2 Douglas Street, Wynantskill. The The goal of this task is to establish a vision for what North Greenbush could look like when it is resilient to climate change. This is important for building community cohesion and for providing a goal from which to gauge progress. The meeting will also be livestreamed at the town’s website. The task force will meet several times over the next several months. Submitted by Councilwoman Mary Frances Sabo

Valley Community College President Roger Ramsammy. “We will provide high school students with life-changing experiences preparing them for the next generation in high demand and high reward fields, including computer information systems, engineering technology, environmental science, protection technology and health science,” said Gladys Cruz, superintendent of Questar III BOCES. Students have the ability to earn up to 63 college credits throughout high school, and will not be charged for them. These credits can be counted toward an associate degree. Other covered expenses are tuition, fees, instructional materials and books. The school will be in Lang Hall, a building named for the family of Conrad H. Lang Sr., a chief engineer with the state Thruway and an original trustee when the college was founded in 1953. “We are very happy to be here today. I’m glad the school was placed in Rensselaer County since we have lived here most of our lives,” said his son, Conrad Henry Lang Jr. The renovation of the building cost $3 million. According to the press release, P-Tech is funded for $3 million over seven years and Smart Scholars-Early College High School for $870,537 over five years. The funding from grants by the state Department of Education offset the overall costs. Admission is available to students from 46 school districts across seven counties. The districts pay the tuition for their students to attend. “Today is all about recognizing that it’s not a one size fits all. We have a new vision moving forward for high school and we expect greater things to come in the future,” Ramsammy said. CONTINUED FROM 3

Home: $444,444. Spirits: Free. Famed Lansingburgh house with a haunting reputation on market By KENNETH C. CROWE II
Nine ghosts, as well as memories of notorious gangster and bootlegger John T. “Legs” Diamond supping in the dining room, set the two-story home at 562 Fifth Ave. apart from its neighbors in the city’s Lansingburgh neighborhood. Across the avenue from the Lansingburgh Fire Station and up the street from the ionic Snowman Ice Cream stand, the Enslin Mansion wouldn’t strike one as a center for paranormal activity, but property owner Michele Bell can detail the lights, sounds and feelings that emanate throughout the residence that’s been in her family for six generations. “It has a lot of spirits. It’s very haunted,” said Bell, 55, of Westchester County, who describes herself as an intuitive alchemist and empath. Teams of paranormal investigators have gone through the house finding traces of ghosts haunting the building. Bell keeps the basement and other locations locked as they’ve been the scenes of spirit activity. Bell has gained international attention as a haunted house listed as an Airbnb rental for the adventurous willing to risk a ghostly encounter in one of its haunted bedrooms. “Don’t worry, our ghosts are harmless; you probably won’t see them, although some visitors swear they exists!” reads her Airbnb listing of a queen bedroom
for rent in the house, which joined with use of the house’s common areas, rents for $206 a night. But now the whole house can be yours. Bell has listed the house at an asking price of $444,444 — a spiritual number that she said she doesn’t plan to change. In addition to being an author, film producer and a death doula, in which she helps people move from this life, Bell also sells real estate. The house has been filmed and featured in shows on Discover ID and TLC (The Learning Channel). “I would like it to go to a young couple,” said Bell, envisioning them as perhaps opening a bistro but always appreciating its history and spiritual side. Bell has decided to part with the house after nursing her mother, who had Alzheimer’s for nine years in the residence. The family ties are strong and they have that tinge of interesting history that evokes the Roaring 20s and leaves one wondering what was said at the dining table in the room just off the kitchen. Bell’s great-grandfather Frederick A. Feyl bought the building in 1919 after immigrating from Bavaria. Feyl hosted Diamond and other people in a supper club in the house when the gangster was in town. “My great-grandfather had connections,” Bell said. The ties weren’t necessarily notorious, as Feyl was a man who knew people, she said. Diamond would be acquitted during a kidnapping trial
in December 1931 at the Rensselaer County Court House and then killed the next day in an Albany boarding house. The Enslin House at 562 Fifth Ave., in Troy, conBut it’s sidered by some to be haunted, was the site of a the ghosts dinner club where Legs Diamond once dined. that draw attention. Five are members of her own family who have strong ties to the house and to her, including her late son Nick, Bell said. Then there’s Shirley, who boarded at the house and was found dead at the foot of the basement stairs. And finally three men, who haven’t been explained. The Enslin Mansion, named for part of Bell’s ancestral family, also still retains many of the features dating from its construction in 1890. For example there’s a tin ceiling in the front parlor that’s intact. And ethereal feelings of a presence, and random sounds, are also included.
Troy officers will face retrial in 2018 excessive force case By ROBERT GAVIN
Citing improper remarks by an attorney, a federal judge in Utica has overturned a civil jury verdict that in May cleared four Troy police officers of using excessive force on a man outside a Congress Street bar three years ago. U.S. District Judge David Hurd will reschedule the trial of patrolmen Christopher Parker, Louis Perfetti, Justin Ashe and Kyle Jones, who were exonerated of using excessive force on then-50-year-old Lamont Lee in 2018. In a 62-page decision, Hurd said Michael E. Ginsberg, the attorney for the officers, repeatedly told jurors that a video of the incident submitted by Lee’s attorneys had been fabricated and that a competing video offered by the defense was the official version. Ginsberg had “made a statement along those lines nine times throughout trial, with every day of trial getting at least two unique variations on the attack,” the judge said. He said at various times during trial, Ginsberg claimed Lee’s video was
“manufactured,” “spliced,” “duplicitous,” and a “further attempt to pull one over on us” as opposed to the “official video.” The “flippant and thus-far unsubstantiated allegations made repeatedly in front of the jury leave the court no choice but to order a new trial,” Hurd wrote. He said he was not satisfied that Lee’s trial was a fair one. In addition to Ginsberg’s remarks about the video, the lawyer told jurors in his closing arguments that Lee’s plan was “attempting to capitalize on the anti-police sentiment now. Going to come up from New York City with his New York City attorneys and hit a home run here in the Northern District (of New York) for $3 million.” Hurd said that comment played to regional bias and to depict Lee and his attorneys as unscrupulous opportunists. While that remark alone would not be enough to warrant a new trial, it did so when coupled with Ginsberg’s repeated comments about the video. The officers’ defense “took every irregularity in the process of showing that
video to the jury and used it to paint plain- reached down toward his left pocket. North Greenbush Open Space Committee Chair Town Board member Mary Frances Sabo initiated and was the key organizer of the project to apply for and create an NRI. A goal is to add the NRI as a support document for the Town’s Comprehensive Plan, to assist town boards, landowners, and prospective developers when
considering land use and protection, and guide planners to continue to create an open space network of greenbelts, open space conservation subdivisions, civic spaces, parks, and environmental resources. The NRI will also be a guide to identify conservation easements, coordinate linkages and connections, and design trail systems connecting key areas, including Wynantskill and

the Hudson Riverfront. The NRI can be used to identify and acquire appropriate properties to serve as a public access-way to the Wynants Kill, as well as enhance flood protection. Additionally, the NRI will provide a planning tool to support the Town’s pledge as a Climate Smart Community, to support site plan locations and criteria that preserve undisturbed, unfragmented, interconnected natural areas that increase biodiversity and resilience to droughts, floods, heat waves and wildfires, while drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. There will be no cost to the Town. Instead, volunteers will collaborate with the mapping staff. The grant covers the mapping; the NRI will also include descriptions for the maps. The draft and the final NRI will be reviewed and presented to the public. The intention is to present the completed NRI to the Town Board for adoption and inclusion in the Comprehensive Plan. What Could a Resilient North Greenbush Look Like? Open Meeting Thurs., Sept. 23 NORTH GREENBUSH - Events of this summer are gentle (or not so gentle) reminders of the drastic weather events that can and have negatively impacted communities in Rensselaer County. The Climate Smart Vision Task Force, a short-term committee, hopes to meet a couple of times over the next three months to carve out a vision for what North Greenbush could look like when it is resilient to climate change. We welcome you to be part of our task force, or to just attend our first meeting to see what it’s all about. Establishing a vision together is important for building community cohesion and providing a goal to gauge progress. The vision document will be presented to the Town Board to review and consider approving. Last year the Town completed the Climate Smart Resiliency Planning Tool, which is on the Town website: https://www. townofng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Final-CSRPT-North-Greenbush.pdf Reviewing this tool may help you frame where we are with Climate Smart status. You are invited to join us Thurs., Sept. 23, 7 p.m., at the North Greenbush Town Hall. Please RSVP by Mon., Sept. 20, to Bernie Wiesen at Rensselaer County Cooperative Extension: bw27@cornell. edu or 518-272-4210 if you are attending, so she can ensure we’ll have materials and space for all. For more information on the Task Force, contact Bernie.

Women have some control in regard to their risk for breast cancer No one, regardless of their age, occupation, skin color, or socioeconomic status, is immune to cancer. In fact, individuals might be hard pressed to say no one in their family and/ or circle of friends has been diagnosed with cancer at some point. According to the National Cancer Institute, there were 18.1 million new cancer cases across the globe in 2018. Among women, when excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, no cancer was more prevalent globally than breast cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund reports that, in 2018, breast cancer accounted for 25.4 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in women. That figure is nearly three times as high as the percentage of cases of colorectal
cancer, which accounted for the second most new cancer cases diagnosed in women in 2018. It’s understandable to be fearful of such figures, which can make a breast cancer diagnosis seem almost inevitable. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that not all risk factors for breast cancer are set in stone. Though age and family history, two known risk factors for breast cancer, may be beyond a woman’s control, she still can exercise some control over other risk factors. · Physical activity: The CDC notes that women who are not physically active have a higher risk of getting breast cancer than those who are. The Office on Women’s Health, a division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, notes that women should get two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity every week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. This should be accompanied by muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days each week. Carrying around extra weight can make moving around more difficult, so the Office on Women’s Health urges larger women to start slowly if it’s been awhile since they exercised. In addition, aging women
can speak with their physicians for advice about exercise regimens they should or need not avoid. · Taking hormones: The CDC notes that hormone replacement therapies that include both estrogen and progesterone taken during menopause can increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer when taken for more than five years. In addition, the CDC reports that oral contraceptives, such as birth control pills, have been linked to a higher risk for breast cancer. Women can speak with their physicians about how to control hormone-related risk factors for breast cancer. · Alcohol consumption: Studies have found that the more alcohol a woman consumes the greater her risk for breast cancer becomes. Smoking, exposure to chemicals that have been found to cause cancer and changes in hormones related to working night shifts are some additional risk factors for breast cancer that women may be able to control. Breast cancer affects millions of women across the globe each year. Though that may instill a feeling of helplessness, women should know that many risk factors for breast cancer are within their control.

Throughout the 40+ years that Jay Dinshah helped people understand the plight of animals used for food and commodities, he brought books. From just a handful to hundreds, these tools for living represented a growing community of vegan adherents and an increasing number of experts in the field. Having viewed the savage ways in which humans sustain their lives, Jay implored people to come Out of the Jungle (OOTJ, 1967), the title of his book elucidating the path to becoming vegan. Easy recipes had been presented in another book published by the American Vegan Society, The Vegan Kitchen (1965) by his wife Freya which had strong sales across the U.S. until eclipsed by an avalanche of vegan cookbooks 35 years later. OOTJ had inspired founders of the Gentle World vegan community, and they turned to Jay for help in publishing their gourmet Cookbook for People Who Love Animals (1981). In the 1980s and 90s, this book saw spectacular sales in the burgeoning animal rights movement and in general distribution. Book sales were always an important highlight of meetings and conventions. Books by speakers, and titles assembled from many publishers, fell into vegetarian/ vegan themed categories: philosophy, health, nutrition, animal rights, environment (including gardening without by-products from animal agriculture), history, books about and for children, and cookbooks. The bookstore at the American Vegan Society headquarters in Malaga New Jersey assembled the biggest collection of its kind in the world. Jay valued books for their information, and he was fortunate to know many authors as dear friends. Jay’s influence on individuals and the modern vegan movement is put forth in Powerful Vegan Messages (2014); this book includes writings by Jay and testimonials collected by daughter Anne Dinshah. Jay Dinshah (1933-2000) was a dynamo who promoted a vision for a more compassionate world. He can be viewed on the Powerful Vegan Messages You Tube channel. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A Strategic Retreat by Troy Sand & Gravel? Troy Sand & Gravel Co. Inc. (TS&G) has discontinued its lawsuit against the Town of Sand Lake to lower the tax assessment on TS&G’s West Sand Lake property from $2.8 million to $0.8 million. Why? Was it because TS&G realized, after hiring expensive lawyers, that its property might be assessed too low? Maybe. Or did TS&G decide that keeping a low profile now was a better way to protect its long-range profits? Could be. After all, TS&G is a for-profit business. It exists to make money -- as much as possible. TS&G hires lawyers, engineers, lobbyists, and other advisers to help it make money. The company makes campaign donations, presumably to political parties and candidates who TS&G believes will favor policies that help TS&G’s bottom line. That’s just business. TS&G has an application pending before DEC for a major vertical expansion of its mine West Sand Lake mine. TS&G is asking permission to excavate an additional 100 feet deep (roughly equal to a nine-story building) over an area of 61.8 acres (roughly equal to 40 contiguous football fields, including end zones). That’s a lot of material (around 9 million cubic yards by my calculation). What’s the worth to the owner of all that material over the years – perhaps decades – that it would take to mine it? If the permit modification is granted how much would a willing buyer pay to acquire the mine (and rights to all that material)? More than the current $2.8 million assessment? Maybe multiple times more? (Reportedly, TS&G also would like local approvals to expand its mining operation to the north, up to and beyond Stop 13 Road and into the Town of Poestenkill, giving TS&G additional material to mine and sell.) As to lawsuit, I think TS&G concluded that it’s best chance to maximize profits in the future was to lay low this fall. But surely, as time moves on, TS&G will continue to push for mine expansions with TS&G profits its singular objective. Garrett DeGraff, Averill Park, NY
Letter to the Editor In response to Frank Coppa’s recent letter about my letter of defense for Governor Cuomo, I am not an “ardent supporter”… I never voted for him. My objection to the eleven accusations of workplace sexual misconduct was my intention. It’s common knowledge that workplace sexual misconduct is nothing new or surprising. It probably happens hundreds of times every day and in every state. Who could possibly believe only eleven articulate, attractive sophisticated women with good government jobs were the only lone victims. If these perhaps thousands of daily victims went after their predators, half the states’s workplaces would be shut down. What is troubling is the devastating weakness and humiliation these eleven Cuomo accusers described and suffered…or pretended to suffer. It raises the obvious questions: did you say no or stop or I’ll call the police..or tell your superiors…or your wife? Did you try to escape or run out? Did you fight back? The entire story is suspect. If these accusers were too terrified to speak up when it supposedly happened, what changed their collective minds? And when they did come
Letters do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff of The Advertiser, and we cannot vouch for the accuracy of the contents of these columns.
forward, they knew it would hurt the governor’s mother and his three daughters. If they had any concern for his family, they could have charged him privately without all the juicy gossip and sympathetic publicity that was showered over them. I find it sickening, and again I wish Governor Cuomo would have gone to trial and confronted all eleven “terrified” humiliated accusers. If all their stories and reactions remained the same..that would be very curious. If these accusers just lied to get attention…that’s bad enough; but bearing false witness against someone, destroying one’s reputation and future job possibilities seems more like a sin. I feel the same way about the #50 women who made the same suspicious collective charges against the famous titans in the movies and broadcasting industries. Strange how they all told the same stories…all reveled in the subsequent publicity..and many probably hoped to get a big money settlement or pay-off. And what about the thousands of 14 and 15 year old boys and girls from the most financially and socially deprived neighborhoods…who are sexually assaulted and raped and have to often fend for themselves without all the fanfare and hoopla these Cuomo accusers and MeToo celebrities enjoy? Think about it. Sylvia Honig, Wynantskill
Sad day for WHMT In late August, WMHT Telecommunications, the part company of WMHT, WEXT, and other public radio and television in the area decertified the union. Perviously CWA and IATSE members were working at the facility. CWA and IATSE are the unions that handle technical behind-the-scene services in theater, tv, film, and radio. From what I understand, the end product of the decertification resulted in reduced staff at the WHMT facility which is located right here in North Greenbush. I heard at recent breakfast from staff related to the facility, that most of the operations now are being handled in other parts of the state like Syracuse. I am sad to see the loss of these jobs in North Greenbush. I support public television and radio. I will be switching my monthly donation to the large parent organizations of NPR or PBS. This feels as a short-sighted decision by WMHT. Unions have lead the way in workplace safety, pay, and other benefits. Michael Myer, North Greenbush
PFOA in Poestenkill, Part IV In a TU article entitled “Poestenkill wells test above state level for PFOA” by Kenneth C. Crowe II on Sept. 1, 2021, we find County Executive Steve McLaughlin, a politician, being quoted about the PFOA in the groundwater in the residential area of Poestenkill proximate to the Algonquin Middle School, which raises the question of why. Rensselaer County is a Health District pursuant to the NYS Public Health Law by vote of the people in 1946, a fact reflected in the Rensselaer County Charter enacted in 1971, and Section 8.02 of Article 8 of the County Charter, titled Board of Health, states in clear and unequivocal language “There shall be in the Department a Board of Health whose members shall continue to be appointed by the County Legislature in the manner and for the term provided in the Public Health Law,”
and of direct relevance to this discussion of the Poestenkill groundwater contamination fiasco, “The Board of Health, subject to the provisions of the Public Health Law and the State Sanitary Code, shall have the power to consider any matters that may come to its attention relating to the preservation and improvement of public health within the County.” So why are we hearing from Steve McLaughlin, who has no authority, jurisdiction or discretion in the Health District, nor is he a qualified public health professional. Why aren’t we hearing from the Board of Health? This is their responsibility. So where are they? In 1949, the RCHD established a Division of Environmental Hygiene headed up by a NYS licensed professional engineer whose duties include providing guidance to the general public in regard to environmental health problems such as we are now confronted with in Poestenkill, as well as being responsible for the enforcement of the provisions of the Public Health Law and local and State Sanitary Codes in relation to environmental health matters. So where is he or she? Why are we hearing from these politicians instead of public health professionals? Paul Plante, Poestenkill
Concern Over Appeal to Court Decision Against Party Barn Why are we concerned? The strong agricultural history of West Sand Lake is something that should be cherished and preserved. It is why we moved here and have chosen to raise a family here. The progress of man is inevitable, and already West Sand Lake has been damaged by the sprawling, uncontrolled city growth that affects many of the area’s booming suburbs. The foresight of previous Planning Boards to zone the Barnes/ Shaver/parker area as A1-Agricultural should continue to be withheld. This is not a tenuous law that can be swayed easily. In keeping with the Comprehensive Plan and its vision of Sand Lakes Future, this application should continue to be denied. Why would the Town Planning Board continue to waste our tax dollars on reversing a decision made by the Supreme Court to reject the approval of a special use permit that obviously does not support a party barn on Barnes Road. OPINION No, Afghanistan Not the End of American Power By Rich Lowry
It's hard to imagine more humiliating images than what we've seen in Afghanistan in recent weeks, from the hasty evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul to the chaotic scenes outside the airport. Our surrender to a band of AK-47-bearing guerrillas after 20 years has, understandably, occasioned autumnal thoughts about American power. Even the Soviet Union, on the cusp of full collapse, managed to get out of Afghanistan in good order and leave behind a government that endured for several years. What does it say that we couldn't match that? Writing in The New Yorker, Robin Wright says the pullout may serve as "a bookend for the era of U.S. global power." Allister Heath, editor of The Sunday Telegraph, argues that "the botched exit is merely the latest sign that the American era is ending." Francis Fukuyama says the images in Kabul "have evoked a major juncture in world history," although he thinks "the end of the American era had come much earlier." There is no sugar-coating our defeat in Afghanistan and the abject position we put ourselves in during the final days. The withdrawal is a blow to our counterterrorism capabilities, our prestige and our geopolitical position. For all of that, though, no one in the world has the formidable advantages of the United States, which still outstrips everyone else, including China, on every material metric that matters. Great powers don't go away easily. The British could be forgiven for thinking that it'd be all downhill after losing their American colonies in a long war joined by their traditional rivals France and Spain. Instead, British imperial power had not yet peaked. Our exit from Saigon in 1975, to this point the touchstone for modern American defeats, was followed by Communist advances all over the map. Yet, within 20 years, we'd win the Cold War and ascend to unprecedented global power. We are still blessed with an extraordinarily favorable geographical position, as a continental nation with friendly neighbors, access to two oceans, enormous reserves of oil and gas, and vast amounts of arable land. We produce about a quarter of global GDP, a share that has held up over the years. We are responsible for an astonishing 40% of all military spending in the world. It was ridiculous that Biden made a bragging point of the evacuation, but it's true that no one else would have been capable of such an operation. We dominate the list of top universities in the world. There is no country people would rather come to. A Taliban spokesperson interviewed on Iranian TV, when challenged why so many people want to flee Afghanistan, rightly pointed out that if American planes were taking people out of Iran, there'd be a rush for the exits there, too. In his book, "Unrivaled," Michael Beckley of Tufts University and the American Enterprise Institute rebuts the notion that China is overtaking us. American workers are more productive than workers anywhere else. China's labor productivity has improved, Beckley writes, "but remains half that of Turkey, lower than Mexico's, and roughly on par with Brazil's." We have demographic challenges, but other big powers, especially China, will be aging faster. Over the course of the century, Beckley notes, China will lose half of its workforce, or 470 million people. Our alliance system is an enormous force-multiplier, a network that, according to Beckley, "encompasses 25% of the Earth's population and accounts for 75% of world GDP and defense spending." China's formal ally, in contrast, is North Korea. None of this is to deny that the contemporary United States is racked by self-doubt, poisonous politics and institutional failure. It is only to say that if we are determined to squander our global position, it will take much more time and folly to do it. A further downward slide, like the disastrous withdrawal from Kabul itself, will be a choice, not an inevitability. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.
Biden's Words
By Bob Franken
"Mistakes were made." That's a passive-aggressive phrase that politicians and others have used since time immemorial to deflect blame. Suggesting amorphous "mistakes" implies that others are at fault. President Bill Clinton was a master at speaking wishy-washy passive-aggressive, but it was not just Clinton. As you might guess, Richard Nixon was too, and Ronald Reagan, all the way back to Ulysses S. Grant speaking about corruption that rocked his administration. And Joe Biden is no slouch either. He combines passive-aggressive with aggressive-aggressive. First of all, his very appearance before cameras several times for speeches to the nation during the messy Afghanistan withdrawal was aggressive, if not laudable in and of itself. He declared that he was taking "responsibility" for the mess -the mess being the decision to abandon the country. "Responsibility" seems to be a forthright word, but it is certainly less impactful than "blame." Blame is something Biden spreads around to others, particularly the Afghan army that surrendered faster than you could say "turned tail and ran." And it's for the U.S. officials who overestimated the Afghan soldiers' willingness to fight a respectable battle against the Taliban. Biden explained his choice in a particularly "buck stops here" style, perhaps because polls supported his decision to withdraw from a war that had gone on for 20 years: "I believe this is the right decision, a wise decision, and the best decision for America." "I was not going to extend this forever war," he went on, "and I was not extending a forever exit." As for the 13 American troops and nearly 200 Afghan civilians killed by an Islamic State subsidiary suicide bomber, he carefully called the U.S. forces "heroes" and made it a point to at least meet with the families of those slain, in Dover, Delaware, during the "dignified transfer" ceremonies, even those who bitterly opposed his conduct of the withdrawal, which they blamed on him.
It was his effort to finesse a gruesome story that has not yet been told. It will take years to unfold and can depend on events whose outcomes we cannot predict. Will the administration be successful in evacuating the remaining American citizens and Afghan allies who want to escape? How will future diplomatic and economic decisions play into this, during the Biden presidency and beyond? How will this be an issue in a future election? How will Republicans play it? Right now, they are all over the map. Nebraska's Sen. Ben Sasse, not normally a partisan, was unusually harsh about the commander in chief's handling of the withdrawal: "There is clearly no plan. There has been no plan. Their plan has basically been happy talk. People have died, and people are going to die because President Biden decided to rely on happy talk instead of reality." There is a cliche that the "fog of war" confuses and influences an understanding of current events. How will history treat Joe Biden's decisions about Afghanistan vis-a-vis his predecessors since 9/11? There are predictions that the Taliban will again take over, spawning a wave of attacks against the United States by newly emboldened terrorists hiding out in Afghanistan. Perhaps domestic issues will overtake the memories of Afghanistan or, for that matter, international issues, too. How will Joe Biden's rhetorical and political skills influence whatever happens? We must write about something. Will natural disasters and their relationship to climate change be exploitable? And the pandemic. For the moment, the Afghanistan story has run its course. At the moment. What will take its place? Will anything need to take its place? Now it's up to the pundits to chew on it for a while, then the historians. For starters, they can assess Joe Biden's use of rhetoric. Bob Franken is an Emmy Award-winning reporter who covered Washington for more than 20 years with CNN.

The two-part version presented by Ginsberg contained a “glitch” in the middle of the incident as the officers were restraining Lee, the judge said. The judge noted that in
the first part of the video, Jones is seen kneeling on Lee’s left knee with his right leg extended to the side, his back to the camera directly in front of Lee’s head and shoulders. A hat that Lee was wearing is seen on the ground near Jones’s right knee. As Jones begins to rise,

his hat, which descends, knocking it a foot to the right. Jones rises again, braces himself and drops his knee two more times, the judge stated. The judge, while not assessing blame to either side, said despite Ginsberg’s arguments to the contrary “something happenedin the changeover” between the two parts of the video. “It is difficult to argue otherwise when Lee’s baseball cap is in one spot when (the first part) ends and another when (the second part) begins,” the judge stated. The judge said Lee’s attorneys brought their video to the attention of the defense just 11 days before trial. Ginsberg, he said, could have asked for an adjournment and gotten an expert to testify. “The solution was not to

go on the offensive without any evidence to support that plaintiff’s version of the video was fabricated,” Hurd wrote. “Clearly, then, that unsupported attack on a crucial piece of evidence meant to be considered by the jury caused substantial prejudice.” Hurd said he was unaware there would be competing videos until the morning of the trial. “If the slight difference between the two versions of the video seems innocuous, the parties at least thought it was worth sparring over from the start,” the judge stated. “Apparently, though, they did not think the difference important enough to bring to the court’s attention.” Hurd said he was blindsided with the competing videos and that the case was “precisely the sort of mess that can be expected when a trial court gets

caught flat-footed.” Still, the judge said he and both parties must share a degree of blame for the way the video evidence was handled at trial. And Hurd also took the blame for barring Roche from objecting during the defense’s closing argument as Ginsberg repeatedly claimed Lee’s video was doctored. Roche could only address the issue in his closing argument. The judge set a hearing for Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. to discuss the video evidence for the next trial. Once resolved, Hurd said he will set anew trial date, with only one version of the video to show to the next jury.

Gilead Resumes Indoor Services CENTER BRUNSWICK - Gilead Lutheran Church will be returning to worship services inside the sanctuary. We appreciate the support we’ve received while we held services outside, and now with cooler temperatures heading our way it is time to head back into the sanctuary. COVID guidelines will not be as strict as the past year, but it is suggested that parishioners wear masks and remain social distanced. Please join us as we return to some normalcy, and we will conduct services to keep us as safe as possible. We will also be continuing our food pantry and our free monthly dinners, but the dinners may remain take-out only. Please join us and take time to reflect on this past year-and-a-half and spend an hour remembering that God lifts us up and walks beside us in trying times. Gilead is located at Route 7 East and Route 278 in Center Brunswick.

Kane-O’Donnell House History
It was not that long ago that the old O’Donnell liquor store was torn down. The structure dated back to the 1780s when Thomas Thompson built it as one of the first taverns in Rensselaer County. It is good to see that the Steinberg house which was once connected to the tavern is undergoing a makeover. In the last Historic Preservation article, I mentioned that the Kane-O’Donnell house was in such bad shape that it too was close to being torn down. Good news, Tim Lawrence, Asst. Building and Fire Code Inspector recently informed
me that the building was purchased at auction and the new owner is planning on restoring the house and making it a bed and breakfast. Dee Erickson put me in contact with Mary Eileen O’Donnell who grew up in the house and had many stories to tell about this grand old Victorian home on Burden Lake Road. Mary Eileen writes, “The Town of Sand Lake is a special place to me and my family. We had a long history there. My family, my mother’s side, lived in Averill Park for about 110 years, starting with Nicholas T. Kane, a Civil War veteran and mill owner who was elected to Congress in 1886. Over the years my great grandfather owned/ran Faith Mills and my grandmother, grandfather and aunt were postmasters and on the volunteer fire department. My dad moved to Averill Park when he came back from WWII, and after delivering mail for a while, he eventually owned the village liquor store. My beloved aunt, Helen Kane,

was the postmaster and my mother-after volunteering in local libraries for years eventually became Algonquin Middle School librarian. She had earned three college degrees from SUNY by this time. Between the liquor store, post office and library, we had all the ‘important’ things handled.” “We O’Donnell ‘kids’ all graduated from Averill Park Schools. My two younger sisters went to Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, and settled there. They have both spent their lives empowering countless children and families in their communities- Helen O’Donnell Wahl as a school principal and administrator and my baby sister Maureen O’Donnell Hibbard as a social worker. As a footnote to their dedication to service, Helen Kay’s daughter served in Obama’s administration and Maureen’s kids became nurses and teachers. Next time…more on the O’Donnell kids, Eleanor Roosevelt and Jerry Lewis.
