Columbia County is full of history, legends and folklore. Have you heard the legend of the Claverack Giant? Did Aaron Burr have a hiding place in Columbia County? Was the famous Ichabod Crane character modeled after a real teacher from Kinderhook? Who was the “Austerlitz Cannibal?”

These are some of the local riddles answered in “Legends and Folklore of Columbia County,” one of 12 different road trip itineraries with free downloadable maps developed by the Columbia County Historical Society as part of its Drive Through History series.

The self-guided road trips are designed to give visitors a taste of history around the county yearround. “It’s always accessible,” said Lisa Weilbacker, CCHS executive director. “It’s something we can build on to add more trips.”

The series grew from two road trips as a pandemic project in 2020 to provide safe outdoor historical excursions for the public.

The itineraries currently offered are “Arts & Letters,” “Hidden Hamlets,” “Dutch & Mohican Heritage,” “Federal Architecture,” “Schoolhouse Stories,” “Artifacts of History,” “Lights, Camera, Road Trip,” “Good Apples,” “Legends & Folklore,” “Patriots & Patroons” and “Sacred Spaces (Parts I and 2).”

Is it Albany? Or is upstate simply a state of mind?

UPSTATE? — Creak! Hiss! That’s the sound of a can of worms opening. Because this is an article about what “upstate” is — and is not. And everyone, it seems, has a strong opinion.

Take Heather Barmore, a deputy assistant in the U.S. Office of the Trade Representative. She refers to herself on her personal Twitter account as an “upstate New Yorker.” She recently tweeted, “On a flight seated next to a Bills fan. Preparing to fight about what’s considered Upstate NY. He’s from Buffalo, so he’ll probably agree with me. Regardless, I am prepared.” (Note the capitalization of upstate. Bar-more means business.)

When asked what Barmore considers upstate, she flagged another

Road trippers can mix and match to create custom itineraries. Here are four picks to get you started:

One highlight from “Lights, Camera, Road Trip: Historic Movie Moments in Columbia County” is a visit to the Beaver Mill Falls Overlook in Valatie, where Harry Houdini performed a daring stunt for the 1923 silent film “Haldane of the Secret Service.”

In the film’s climax, Houdini was dragged along the cliff edge of the waterfall. A gang of hoodlums tied him at his neck, hands and feet, securing a rope across his body to a large spinning wooden waterwheel (built on site by the film crew for the scene). Moviegoers watched as the wheel began to

spin and our hero struggled wildly. Set between rocks on either side of the waterfall, the center rod of the waterwheel slipped off, sending the wheel crashing into the falls with Houdini tied to it. Totally submerged in the fiercely moving falls, the camera showed only Houdini’s hands above water, untying the rope. Breaking free, his head popped up out of the water as he loosened the noose around his neck and staggered to the rock cliff. Stop No. 10; Main Street at Chatham Street (NY203), Valatie

The first stop on the “Legends and Folklore of Columbia County” road trip recounts an ill-fated love between a beautiful Mohican maid and a young man from an opposing tribe, possibly Mohawk, in the legend of Spook Rock. It is said that both are buried beneath Spook Rock along Claverack

tweet from 2018, penned by Riley Ludwig (born in Albany, went to college in Ithaca, now lives in New York City): “Upstate New York is an actual region of New York State and not just everything outside of New York City. A lot of people think north of the Bronx is upstate but, no. Albany is Upstate NY. Buffalo is Western NY. Syracuse is Central NY and Poughkeepsie and Westchester are downstate.”

Strong opinion indeed.

Guess what? Bruce Dearstyne, a historian and author who lives in Guilderland, doesn’t agree. “There is no precise or legal definition as far as I know,” he said. “I don’t know when this term started to come into vogue. I define it as anything north of New York City.”

This means Dearstyne, the author of “The Spirit of New York: Defining Events in the Empire State’s History,” would define Westchester and Putnam counties as upstate. “Most people would say Long Island is part of upstate.”

Well, maybe not most.

An unscientific poll crowdsourced on Facebook reveals people who grew up in New York City consider upstate anything that isn’t their corner of the city. For some, that means north of 14th Street. For others, it could be in the hinterlands north of 125th street, maybe even Yankee Stadium. Some are willing to stretch and call upstate north of Westchester.

Other dividing north-south lines thrown about include the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and the Stewart’s Shops meridian which, according to the company’s online locations map, begins around Middletown. (DEC drought task force member

The Columbia County Historical Society has 12 self-guided itineraries for historical road trips through the county. One stop takes you to the site of inspiration for Washington Irving’s iconic character, Ichabod Crane, from “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

North Chatham Community Day

On October 15th the hamlet of North Chatham will be holding its second annual Community Day. All are invited to come to North Chatham and see what makes it a great place to live! The North Chatham Free Library will be open with books for sale on the front lawn (weather permitting) and an informational table about all the great services they offer. Some residents of the hamlet will be having yard sales and the North Chatham Volunteer Fireman’s Association will be serving lunch from 11:00-2:00.

The North Chatham United Methodist Church clothing barn will be open and the church will have a “sweet treats” sale, silent auction, “tailgate sale”, and donated items for sale. Grafton Senior Center News

Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Rd, Cropseyville, will be open with limited hours. State and County Guidelines will be posted and must be followed at all times. The center is now open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 3:00 with congregate lunch and activities. Mondays and Fridays the center will be open 9:30 to 11:00 for our 10:00 Chair Yoga class. On Tuesdays, there will be Senior Yoga Plus class at 10:00. Both are low impact classes that ALL seniors can do at their own pace.

The next Grafton Senior Membership meeting will be held on Oct 4th at 11:15. All seniors are encourage to attend this meeting as upcoming fundraisers will be discussed. Sharon has a vast knowledge of the diverse history of Brunswick, and of the founding families. Perhaps she will be able to reveal some interesting history about your own family. North Greenbush author Jim Flanigan will be signing copies of his books at the North Greenbush Kiwanis Craft/Vendor Fair on October 1st

Flanigan has written two books of memoirs, “Up From Second Street” and “The Great 2020 Paper Chase” that draw from his early years in Wynantskill, his travels and his 24 years in local government.

Using humor and a vivid recall of detail, he recounts the flood of 1949, the Wynantskill School fire, the development of the Rensselaer Technology Park, the murder trial of a fellow Town Board member, the battle over a proposed casino, the origin of the Dunn Landfill and the pursuit of toilet paper during the pandemic. Other memoirs are based on travels to Italy, Ireland, Alaska and a fire tower in Idaho, as well as his experiences coaching girls softball and working with people with disabilities.

To ensure the best, hassle-free swap experience for participants we also ask that you label all costumes with a description (ie. vampire, size 7/8).

On Wednesday, 10/12 between 4:30 - 6:30, come to the library to pick out a “new to you” costume. All costumes, masks, and accessories will be free and available on a first-come, first served basis.

Rensselaer County Legislature Honors the Life and Service of Korean War Veteran Dale “Dick” French

Chairwoman Kelly Hoffman read the biography of Dale “Dick” French who served in the Korean War. Dick served in local government in Schaghticoke and in Nassau. Vice Chair Bob Loveridge, and Legislators Scott Bendett, Tom Grant and Dan Casale also took part in the monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran Program in the Chambers of the Legislature.

Halloween is actually Monday, October 31, 2022 but we made the decision to celebrate it a day early. It gives our “truckers” more time to get ready for our visitors. That is a good point for us but it also frees up time for our little friends to go out again on Monday for more loot.

Our trunks open at 3:00 PM and will close at 5:00 PM.

If you enjoy watching the little one dress up but don’t have children of your own to take around, please feel free to come and hand out candy and goodies with us. Just to let you know, we have had close to 200 little visitors each

year. In 2021 we had some of our canine friends stop by, some in costume and other just stop by for a pat on the head.

We will be found in the parking lot behind Gilead Lutheran Church. You can’t miss us because Gilead is located at the intersection of Routes 7 & 278 in Center Brunswick.

Sand Lake Historical Society Features “Troy and The Gilded Age”

Please join the Sand Lake Historical Society on Tuesday October 11th, at 7:00 PM, when Kathryn T. Sheehan, Rensselaer County and Troy City Historian, presents an illustrated lecture on how Troy’s 19th century architecture became an integral backdrop to the Julian Fellows HBO series “The Gilded Age”.

Kathryn worked with the location scouts and production designers as well as providing information on how Troy appeared during the Gilded Age and who the major players were in the city at the time (representing “old” and “new” money). She also will share behind the scenes stories from the filming for season one.

A native of Troy, Kathryn’s ancestors settled in Rensselaer County in the 1760’s. Her career at the Hart Cluett Museum of Historic Rensselaer County began as a SUNY Albany public history intern.

As the Rensselaer County and Troy City Historian, Kathryn has researched and lectured on a number of Rensselaer County history topics and has presented her work on local radio and television as well as the History Channel, C-Span, Russian and Japanese Network television. Biden tells his critics: 'Watch me.' People should give it a try.

During his recent interview on CBS's "60 Minutes," President Biden made a few controversial comments: The pandemic is over. Yes, the United States would defend Taiwan if invaded by China. But the real stand-out comment for me from Biden was, "Watch me!"

This bit of Biden bravado came after interviewer Scott Pelley asked him what he would tell critics who say that because he's the oldest person ever to take the presidential oath, he is "unfit for the job." But is it really bravado if the president can back it up? Biden has a track record of outperforming expectations - so maybe it's time we all reset them.

I interviewed Biden once as a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination and once as president-elect. Each time, he made a personal pronouncement that elicited my cocked eyebrow of skepticism simply because the environment in which he made it was unfavorable. But over time, Biden proved the skeptics wrong.

I sat down with candidate Biden in August 2019, right after he finished a rally in South Carolina. The Post had just published a report that tore apart a favorite story he frequently told on the campaign trail. Even then, he was dogged by questions about his age and mental acuity. So I asked Biden how he could dismantle such a campaign-damaging narrative. "Well, I can only break out of it when I win," he said.

Six months later, with his campaign seemingly in freefall, Biden won the South Carolina primary. That victory set him on the path to winning the nomination, and then the presidency with a record 81 million votes.

During the transition, two days before Christmas and two weeks before the Jan. 6 insurrection, I joined a call the president-elect held with opinion columnists. This time, I asked him about concerns that the man who served 36 years in the Senate and still swooned over his work across the aisle couldn't see the agenda-busting sucker punches headed his way.

"Well, let me tell you something," he responded. "You guys have been saying that about me since the day I ever got into office. . . . I think I know what I'm doing and I've been pretty damn good at being able to deal with the punchers." That included, he continued, "establishing with your opponents that if they want to play, I'm ready to fight."

His willingness to fight has been questioned many times in the year and half since that interview. His sluggishness on voting rights comes to mind. And the sucker punch didn't come from Republicans alone, but also from a fellow Democrat, Sen. Joe Manchin III (W.Va.). Dealing with Manchin helped erode the president's standing within the party and among the people: Two months ago, according to Gallup, Biden's average approval rating at that point in his term was the lowest ever of any modern-day president.

But by August, Biden was once again on an unexpected upswing.

He signed the wide-reaching Inflation Reduction Act, fulfilling a host of promises such as lowering prescription drug prices, investing in climate mitigation and upping taxes on corporations. The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act has led to the announcement of new car battery and semiconductor plants in the United States. Gas prices dropped all summer. Job creation remains strong with August marking the 20th consecutive month of job growth.

Yes, Biden's approval rating is still underwater. But according to the RealClearPolitics average, his standing has improved from 37 percent on July 21 to 43 percent on Sept. 21.

It's likely the wind at Biden's back will soon die down. Inflation remains high. The Federal Reserve just jacked up interest rates for the fifth time this year to slam the brakes on a potential recession. Gas prices are starting to tick up nationwide. And the president very well might face a Republican-controlled House and Senate after the midterm elections. Democrats being Democrats, count on those nettlesome conversations about whether Biden will or should run for reelection to reemerge with end-of-theworld urgency.

But if such a change of fortune does befall Biden again, maybe we'll have learned not to let low expectations recalcify so quickly. In fact, the smartest move might be simply to do as Biden said in his interview: Just watch.

Hits the Blue States

The nation is having a contentious debate over whether illegal migrants coming over the Southern border should be transported further inland, and if so, where and by whom.

Should they stay in San Antonio or end up in New York City, get bussed to a rural town no one has heard of, or get flown to one the most desirable summer spots in the country?

Although this debate has generated much heat and is of great interest to the local authorities involved, it is really beside the point.

The crux of the matter is that the Biden administration dismantled or downgraded every policy that had established control over the Southern border under his predecessor and is directly responsible for the record number of illegal immigrants flooding into the country. If the influx wasn't so large, there'd be fewer migrants to sign up for the bus trips north and east to blue cities sponsored by Texas and Arizona.

Everyone should agree that it'd be much better if Biden reversed field and sought to control the border. Texas and Arizona would no longer be getting inundated, and therefore would have less incentive to send the migrants further inland. If that were the case, places like Washington, D.C., and New York City wouldn't be receiving thousands of new migrants and wouldn't have to declare emergencies and request the National Guard to help cope.

If the border states are treating migrants as "pawns," give them fewer pieces on the board. If they are engaged in unworthy "stunts," remove the incentive to make theatrical gestures in the first place. Reduce the temperature by controlling the problem at the source.

The truth of the matter is that prior to Texas and Arizona undertaking their programs -- and DeSantis adding his attention-grabbing flights to Martha's Vineyard -- illegal immigrants were already getting moved around the country, with the assent of the Department of Homeland Security. The

federal government gives migrants permission to travel within the country, and then private organizations get them on buses to go to their preferred destinations.

Does anyone think this is how our immigration system should work?

Of course, a Biden crackdown at the border is not in the offing. The administration is steadfastly dishonest about the border. Vice President Kamala Harris says the border is "secure," and any problems only result from "a broken immigration system." Well, yes, the border is secure in the sense that the Mexican equivalent of the 10th Mountain Division isn't going to march over it any day now, but there is no serious effort to exclude the historic tide of migrants.

Democrats are so vested in the "Big Lie" about the border, they don't dare to contradict it, even when they are yelping in pain about having to deal with migrants.

On CNN over the weekend, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called the migrant situation "a humanitarian crisis," yet refused to call out the maestro of this debacle. Asked by Jake Tapper whether it's a crisis that needs more attention from the Biden administration, Adams knew he couldn't go there. "No," he said. "I believe it's a crisis that needs more coordination from our country."

An estimated 1.35 million illegal immigrants have entered the country since Biden's inauguration, and they aren't leaving any time soon.

Biden officials don't want to stop the flow; they just want to manage it better. Asked by Bret Baier of Fox News earlier this year whether the administration seeks to reduce illegal immigration, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said, "It is the objective of the Biden administration to make sure that we have safe, orderly, and legal pathways for individuals to be able to access our legal system."

In other words, the Biden administration may not want migrants showing up in Martha's Vineyard, but there will be plenty of newcomers settling all over the United States, in a never-ending flow.

Rensselaer County Should Consider a DUI Court

I was sad and bothered to read the string of recent Times Union (TU) stories related to DWI in the Capital Region. In September, the TU reported a fatality on I-87 stemming from a driver with 4 prior convictions, no license and drunk [Times Union, 9/16/2022].

In July, the TU reported on the Watervliet Police Chief going public to single out repeat DWI offender [Times Union, 7/25/2022].

Both stories involved people who had already been arrested and convicted for DWIs. Per the CDC, on average, a drunk driver will drive 80 times

In recent years, Specialty Diversion Courts (Veterans Treatment Courts, Drug Courts, DUI courts) have sprouted up. Specialty courts encourage disposition of criminal cases to reduce incarceration rates and allow offenders to get the help they need.

As shown in the TU stories and other data, many DUI offenders are repeat offenders. Assuming DUI courts are as successful as drug courts, recidivism is expected to be reduced by 35 to 50% [National Institute of Justice]. In New York, counties can petition to create these specialty courts.

Rensselaer County should follow Sullivan County’s path and create a DUI court. Those that participate in DUI courts must meet weekly with the judge, are subject to routine and spot testing, and many other requirements. Let’s create a DUI court to address this problem before a larger issue drives the need.

A few of this New York City-raised reporter’s Facebook “friends” believe upstate begins wherever on the drive north from the city that a driver starts to relax. This could be Newburgh, Bear Mountain, or, even, incongruously, the Sloatsburg rest area. For Taconic drivers, relaxation apparently arrives when the presumed speed

limit goes up 15 miles per hour and the space between cars doubles. That is a pretty lovely moment, admittedly.

Mat Zucker of the podcast Cidiot maintains there’s an exact spot on the Taconic State Parkway where upstate begins: Miller Hill Road just after I-84 interchange (Exit 37). “Driving north from New York City, you come out of the tight, wooded crazy S-curves of Putnam County and the road and sky just opens up. In front of you are hills, the Catskills in the distance and you’ve entered another world — light, space, farms, beauty. Your eyes open wide, your blood pressure goes down, you’ve entered upstate,” he said.

As lyrical as Zucker sounds, according to the play “Hello Dolly,” upstate begins at Yonkers. (Thanks to The Adirondack Council’s “Forever Adirondacks” director Aaron Mair for flagging this definition.)

Geography plays an important role in what people refer to as upstate; point of view makes all the difference. Not everyone in this vast state is endlessly traveling north from New York City. And there are so many ways to carve what’s north of the city into smaller regions: Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Catskills, Southern Tier, Central New York, North Country, and Western New York. For author Laurie Woolever, who grew up in the Syracuse area, upstate meant Lake Ontario and the Adirondacks.

After attending school in Ithaca and marrying a Western New Yorker, Tim Dressel of Dressel Farms in

New Paltz doesn’t consider where he lives upstate. “It’s relative but if you ask me, it starts at the Twin Bridges on 87 north of Albany,” he said. This definition could anger Hudson Valley residents; certain regions appear to have stronger opinions than others. Dearstyne, the historian, methodically outlines other ways upstate could potentially be defined: Anything outside of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s commuter rail area; where taxes are paid; where state aid is given; judicial districts; school districts; and even the Hudson River.

“When you talk about the Hudson Valley, we usually mean Albany to New York City. The Hudson goes way up north so the Hudson Valley could be from the Adirondacks all the way down to New York City,” he mused.

For the record, Dearstyne would use “downstate” to refer to New York City and believes the city warrants its own distinction.

“It’s a different economy, it always seems to be more diverse, a faster pace of life, more going on. Other things have been historically different — upstate has mostly been Republican since the Civil War and New York City, for the most part, Democratic. Not always, but for a lot of the time.”

(For further reading, Dearstyne suggests the essay on “Upstate and Downstate” in “The Encyclopedia of New York State.” Another, older “historical” discussion he notes is David M. Ellis, “New York: State and City,” chapter 8, “Upstate versus Downstate.”)

Andrew Addotta wouldn’t refer to the city as downstate. To his mind, that’s more for people in the North Country traveling to Albany. Addotta, co-owner of Hamilton & Adams, a men’s clothing store in Kingston, has lived in New York City. He grew up in Buffalo, went to school in Alfred and Ithaca, and has been a resident of Ulster County for a decade. His take? “I think it’s all upstate. There isn’t a clear delineation.”

Addotta’s store has been selling merchandise — shirts, mugs, sweatshirts, stickers — bearing the words “upstate and chill” since 2017. They have shipped online orders to all 50 states.

“Upstate is a feeling and a vibe. It isn’t meant to be any one place. It’s a whole aura and the beauty it offers,” Addotta said. He firmly believes this can be the Finger Lakes, a Bills game, or apple picking in the Hudson Valley. “It’s a huge state,” he said, adding, “It’s based on your experience. That’s where your upstate is.”

On that, Addotta and Dearstyne are aligned: “Everybody has a thought and I think don’t take it too seriously,” Dearstyne said. “You define it your way, I define it my way.”
