Amazon employee voting started Wednesday
By RICK KARLIN
SCHODACK — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and the founder of a fledgling Amazon employee union visited the company’s massive warehouse here on Monday, urging workers to vote “yes” on an upcoming unionization vote.
“Without a union you’re just a person,” Gillibrand, a Democrat, told several hundred employees as well as members of other unions and labor activists who attended the rally.
“If they could pay you less, if they could give you less benefits, they would,” Gillibrand added.
“We have one message, and it’s a message of support for the workers,” said Heather Goodall, the Amazon employee who has spearheaded the union drive at the Schodack facility.
Employees at the million-square-foot ALB1 fulfillment center, or large warehouse,
will vote between Wednesday, Oct. 12, and Monday, Oct. 17, on whether to join the new Amazon Labor Union.
The election will be closely watched. If workers here vote for it, it would be the second Amazon facility nationwide to unionize.
The first was in Staten Island, when workers in April voted to form the newly configured Amazon Labor Union.
Employees at another, smaller Amazon facility in Staten Island voted against unionizing in May.
But Amazon employees nationwide are filing complaints and looking to unionize at their individual warehouses, said Christian Smalls, who started the Amazon Labor Union in Staten Island after he said he was fired from his job there for his organizing activities.
Amazon, which has a reputation of being fiercely anti-union, is contesting the Staten Island vote.
But Smalls, who came to Schodack on Monday, said employees at Amazon facilities nationwide are starting to organize.
“We are filing all over this country,” Smalls told the crowd.
After gathering along the Route 9 entrance to the Schodack facility, union supporters marched to the building’s front entrance to hear the speakers.

The parade will line-up at the Family Dollar Plaza on Main Ave in Wynantskill and kicks-off at 2pm. Come participate and walk in the parade in your BEST and most unique costume while your neighbors watch the parade march down Main Avenue to Town Hall.
After the parade, come join us for cider, donuts and treats. There will be prizes for the top three best costumes! The parade is being organized by Deputy Town Supervisor Kelly Hoffman and Councilwoman Jessica Merola, Chair of the Youth Committee. If you are a local business who wants to participate, please contact the Town Supervisor’s office at (518) 283-5313.
We look forward to seeing you on the 30th.
On their way to the front entrance, marchers passed an approximately 100-foot-long tent, equipped with heaters and lights, where the voting will be held later this week.
The unionization effort organized by Goodall has sparked other controversies.
She recently released a recording of a conversation she had with a human resources investigator from Oregon who said someone had complained to the company that “Heather
has a lot of great things to say.”
It wasn’t clear whether she was talking about the union or company.
But the recording has gone viral and some of Monday’s marchers occasionally shouted that “Heather has great things to say,” along with cries of “What do we want? A union,” as well as other chants.
Nationally, the union drive at Amazon started in earnest last year with a vote at the company’s Bessemer, Ala., facility. Workers voted against unionizing, but National Labor Relations Board officials found that the company had unfairly influenced the vote. The company had persuaded the U.S. Postal Service to install a mailbox at the facility, prompting union organizers to accuse Amazon of intimidating employees and monitoring the vote, which was conducted by mail.
A second vote was held, but the union again lost. That effort was launched by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.
In Staten Island, the Amazon Workers Union sprung up locally with Smalls as the main organizer.
The Schodack vote also comes at a busy and critical time in Amazon’s annual sales calendar. The company on Tuesday is holding an Early Prime Day, offering sales on a variety of items.
Amazon is also gearing up for Black Friday in November, a frenetic period for both online
Troy’s proposed 2023 budget of $79.8M tightens spending
By KENNETH C. CROWE II
TROY — The city’s proposed 2023 budget of $79.8 million for the general fund will increase the tax levy by 1.98 percent and use $2 million in federal COVID recovery funds to deal with increasing costs brought on by inflation and rising interest rates.
Mayor Patrick Madden released his seventh annual budget proposal Friday morning with plans to curtail spending, cut short-term debt and not fill some of the city’s 42 job vacancies in an effort to keep expenditures under control.
The mayor said his plan is looking ahead to the future while continuing his “fact-based budgeting” approach. The proposed 1.98 percent tax levy increase falls below the state cap of 2 percent.
“Recognizing that our taxpayers are plagued with the same inflationary pressures, we are committed to a budget that does not exceed the state’s tax cap. Our proposal achieves that goal,” said Madden, a Democrat.
The proposed $79.8 million general fund is a 1.3 percent increase over the
2022 budget of $78.7 million budget. The city tax rate would rise to $15.41 per $1,000 of assessed valuation compared to the current rate of $15.11 per $1,000 of assessed evaluation. The owner of a home valued at $150,000 would see their city property taxes increase by $3.73 per month or $44.76 annually.
The city plans to fill the 13 firefighter vacancies in the fire department ranks and the one opening among police officers, Madden said. The city intends to maintain spending in public safety except for a video clerk position.
This is the final year that the state Comptroller’s Office will review the city budgeting proposals under the state legislation that created the Troy Municipal Assistance Corp. in the 1990s to bail the city out of its financial crisis.
The city has applied the budgetary savings from paying off the Troy MAC debt over the last several budget cycles. At one time, the city’s Troy MAC debt payments amounted to $6 million annually. This year, the city is applying $2 million from its federal American Recovery Plan Act funds to help balance the budget.
Increases that have impacted the proposed budget are $1 million for health insurance; $750,000 in inflationary prices on parts and supplies; $650,000 in state pension increases; $500,000 in higher interest costs; $460,000 in contractual labor increases; $450,000 in insurance increases;

4 quirks common to cats
Cat owners tend to be deeply devoted to their feline friends. Many factors inspire such devotion, not the least of which is the many quirky character traits cats possess.
Individuals considering adopting a kitten for the first time or even seasoned cat lovers may not know what to expect when bringing a feline home for the first time. That’s because no two cats are the same. However, quirkiness comes with the territory when welcoming a cat into a home, and prospective cat owners can expect to encounter these four common quirks as they prepare to welcome a cat into the family.
1. Kneading: Sometimes referred to as “making biscuits,” kneading may concern first-time cat owners, even though it shouldn’t. Kneading occurs when cats push out and pull in their front paws against a particular surface, such as a piece of furniture. The action resembles kneading dough and is a good sign that a cat is comfortable in its surroundings.
2. Walking in circles: Cats may walk in circles for various reasons. The online cats resource Faqcats.com notes that some cats circle their owners in excitement when their human companions return home from work or other errands. However, cats may walk in circles to show dominancy or because they’re in pain or suffering from an illness such as vestibular disease. Vestibular disease affects the inner ear of cats, particularly older ones. Cats also may walk in circles while suffering from ear infections, hypertension or head injuries. So cat owners who suspect their cat isn’t walking in circles out of excitement to see them should bring those concerns to the attention of their veterinarians.
3. Hunting: Cats can be fascinating

creatures to observe, and that includes their fondness for hunting, even if they’ve already eaten or know where their food is. The online cat resource Catster. com indicates that cats’ eyes are designed to detect movement, so it shouldn’t be a surprise or a cause for concern if they’re suddenly stimulated by something that moves and go into hunting mode.
4. Staring at blank walls: One of the more curious and common quirks cats exhibit is the tendency to stare at walls for lengthy periods of time. Cats naturally have a wider peripheral vision than humans, so it’s possible that a cat staring at a seemingly blank wall is actually seeing something on its periphery that its owner can’t see. Cats also can hear better than their human companions, so they might be staring at a wall because they can hear something their owner can’t. Cats also might stare at a wall where they had seen something earlier, such as a shadow, and are now awaiting its return. Some older cats may stare at walls out of confusion, which is a potential warning sign of cat dementia. However, in most instances there’s nothing abnormal about a cat staring at a wall for a lengthy period of time.
Cats are quirky, and many of those quirks are part of what makes cats such enjoyable pets.
When a new pet diet may be necessary
Pet diets are more elaborate than ever. Where once a few brands dominated the pet food market, now a trip to the pet store yields dozens of options. Fish food, choices for small animals and reptiles and meals for birds are seemingly just as diverse.
Pet parents may consider food options carefully when making initial decisions concerning what to feed their pets, even consulting their veterinarians about their options. But even after careful consideration, pet owners may ultimately need to change their furry friends’ diets. Here are some instances when a dietary overhaul may be necessary.
• Lethargy and weakness: A pet who is suddenly acting lethargic and weak may need a change of diet. Certain foods high in antioxidants can help boost immune system response and help pets fight illnesses or recover from surgeries, while others may cause nutritional deficiencies. Consult with a vet for an evaluation before making any changes.
• Life stage: Certain formulations of food are designed for stages of development. For example, puppy foods have a specific profile for feeding fast-growing pups, and also may be recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers. Adult formulas and senior formulas have recipes for those stages of life (i.e., fewer calories or certain nutrients for joint health). When a pet crosses a life stage, a new food may be recommended.
• Illness diagnosis: Vets often recommend certain diets based on the presence of disease or illness. A cat that is diabetic may need a food that helps manage that disease. A dog with kidney disease or the presence of crystals in its urine may require a food that helps treat urinary issues.
• Weight control: Concern over a pet’s weight gain or weight loss could warrant a change to its diet. There are special foods designed to help animals maintain healthy weights.
• Allergies: Pets may experience allergic reactions to environmental triggers or ingredients in food. If a vet has ruled out other causes for itchy skin, loss of fur/feathers or other allergic symptoms, a new food may help alleviate symptoms.
• Loss of interest: Sometimes pets no longer enjoy eating the food they have been consuming for a while. Subtle changes in the formulation may be off-putting or boredom with a diet could set in. While owners shouldn’t change pets’ diets every time an animal turns up its nose at feeding time, a different flavor or food could add some welcome variety.
A change in a pet’s diet may be warranted in certain instances. Always seek the advice of a veterinarian before changing a pet’s diet.

News From Averill Park CSD
It has been great to see our student body come together for in-person events that were put on hold during the pandemic.
During the first month of school, we have held assemblies, field days, a movie night, and a homecoming dance. All of these have been very well attended and we can’t wait to hold more of these events throughout the school year!
The District has partnered with Capital Region BOCES for management of its food service this year. The partnership includes many benefits, such as a farm-to-school coordinator who focuses on improving access to local foods in schools, and dietitian who plans our menus, collaborates with school nurses regarding food-related health issues for students and works in conjunction with classroom teachers and coaches to discuss the benefits of proper nutrition. In addition, the District receives aid (reimbursement) from the State for using this service so it is cost effective. We look forward to utilizing all of the program’s tools.
National School Custodian Appreciation Day is

Sunday in-person worship gathers at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The 8 a.m. spoken service follows a more ancient Eucharistic Rite in Elizabethan English. Hymns are accompanied on the regal pipe organ, and Communion music is often from contemporary repertoire. And now the choir has begun to sing again!

Rensselaer County Legislative Majority Seeks Pet Supplies for 2022 Golden Tradition “Izzy’s Cause”
Chairwoman Kelly Hoffman has announced the Rensselaer County Legislature’s 2022 “Golden” Tradition: “Izzy’s Cause”.
Each year, the legislature has partnered with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in collecting much needed supplies for their furry friends. The tradition was started by our former legislative colleague, Linda Golden and now, we have added to the cause by honoring a special pet.
This year we are dedicating the drive in memory of a sweet girl named Izzy, whose parents both work for the county. Harry and Francesca Tutunjian lost their English Bulldog Izzy last November. She was a local “celebrity” with a huge following and loved by many.
If you are interested in donating, please visit us on Facebook at Rensselaer County Legislators for a full list of items needed.
A sample includes canned dog/cat food (any brand), Kongs (L/XL), food puzzles, cat beds, clay cat litter, flea and tick preventative (Frontline, Advantage, Advantix), Greenies pill pockets, leashes and slip leads, dog treats, paper towels, bleach, Swiffer WetJet multipurpose floor cleaner refills, Swiffer WetJet pad refills, new or gently used towels, flat sheets, high efficiency laundry detergent, dishwasher pods, hand soap, lightweight fleece blankets or throws for them to cuddle up in (no comforters, bedspreads or pillows filled with batting).
North Greenbush Fire District 2023 Budget
On Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 pm, there will a public hearing at the Defreestville fire station. The proposed 2023 budget is $1.5 M. I have attended the last few Board of Fire Commissioner meetings where the budget has been discussed, the needs of the town, and the reasons for the changes in the budget. About 20% of the budget is necessary types of insurance.
Another 20% of the budget is capital reserve for equipment. In the next 10 years, equipment will need to be replaced and these reserves will help address some future equipment needs. The budget is a good step as we addressing a growing town and new technologies that may pose unique fire risks.
I hope that North Greenbush Board of Fire Commissioners can be competitive in the sourcing of equipment and explore novel solutions as new acquisitions and decisions are made for North Greenbush.

Cancer Support Group
BRUNSWICK - There are very few of us who have not been affected by cancer, either as a patient, family member, or friend.
If you are dealing with the stress of this disease for whatever reason, talking with others in similar circumstances can be very beneficial.
A warm invitation is extended to attend a Zoom cancer support group, led once a month (the third Monday) by retired pastor Ted Wright, he himself a cancer patient. If you have any questions or would like the zoom link, please contact Ted at twright@brunswickchurch.org.
This is a ministry in conjunction with Brunswick Church at 42 White Church Lane (just off Rt. 351). Our worship services are Sundays at 9:30 AM and all are welcome. Church participation is not required to have cancer support.

Trunk or Treat at Gilead Lutheran Church Sunday, October 30, 2022
Halloween is actually Monday, October 31, 2022 but we made the decision to celebrate it a day early. It gives our “truckers” more time to get ready for our visitors. That is a good point for us but it also frees up time for our
little friends to go out again on Monday for more loot. Our trunks open at 3:00 PM and will close at 5:00 PM. If you enjoy watching the little one dress up but don’t have children of your own to take around, please feel free to come and hand out candy and goodies with us. Just to let you know, we have had close to 200 little visitors each year. In 2021 we had some of our canine friends stop by, some in costume and other just stop by for a pat on the head.
We will be found in the parking lot behind Gilead Lutheran Church. You can’t miss us because Gilead is located at the intersection of Routes 7 & 278 in Center Brunswick.

These products have cashews as their base. In addition, many of the vegan dairy products in the store are on sale - some are free - and coupons are available in print as well as through the Hannaford app. Check out the display of vegan products in the produce section of the store.
Jokes 1. Norman Vincent Peale was invited to speak at the National Association of Undertakers. When he arrived he was asked to wear a carnation on his lapel. The woman who was chosen to pin the carnation to his lapel was short in stature, and she stuck the pin into her finger a couple of times and into him a couple of times. She finally sighed and said, “As an undertaker, you know I could do this more easily if you were lying down.”
2. A minister volunteered to give lectures at a prison. After a few weeks, the prisoners said, “Warden, we protest these lectures; they were not part of our sentences.”
3. Daddy, what is an example of minority rule?
Daddy: Having a baby on the house.

It is time for a change. Remember just a little over a year ago? Inflation was low, gas prices were low, and we were over the worst of the pandemic. Now the price of everything is up. Heating this winter will be a shock. Taxes are up. Crime is up. Drug overdoses are up. US Debt just hit a record 31 trillion! Interest rates are up making housing unaffordable for many.
All of these are the result of bad policies. Inflation is ‘too many dollars chasing too few goods’ resulting from government overspending. It is how we are paying for all that ‘free stuff’ the politicians love to boast about to get

With only one party running the state and federal systems, there is no check and balance. The old saying ‘Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely’ is too true. The Albany TU exposed campaign contributions (kickbacks) that Gov Hochel got in return for a $600 million contract for at-home COVID tests. Of course, she claims she does not know anything about it but everyone knows how Albany works.
Last November, several ballot initiatives were voted down against because of concerns about election integrity. One of the first things that Hochel did as governor was to implement one of them (2022Jan21 No excuse

Vote by Mail) apparently because voters are stupid. Then there was the blatant gerrymandering designed to suppress voters which the courts overturned. New Yorkers deserve honest elections.
When courts determined that NY gun control laws were illegal, she again went ahead and implemented new restrictions to antagonize legal and responsible gun owners. She appointed a Lt Gov who was a defund-the-police activist who was later arrested for corruption.

Enforcing gun law a low priority for some sheriffs
By JESSE MCKINLEY AND COLE LOUISON THE NEW YORK TIMES
LYONS — Robert Milby, Wayne County’s new sheriff, has been in law enforcement most of his adult life, earning praise
for conscientious service.
But recently, Milby has attracted attention for a different approach to the law: ignoring it.
Milby is among at least a half-dozen sheriffs in upstate New York who have said they have no intention of aggressively enforcing gun regulations that state lawmakers passed last summer, forbidding concealed weapons in socalled sensitive areas — a long list of public spaces including, but not limited to, government buildings and religious centers, health facilities and homeless shelters, schools and subways, stadiums and state parks, and, of course, Times Square.
“It’s basically everywhere,” said Milby, in a recent interview in his office in Wayne County, east of Rochester. “If anyone thinks we’re going to go out and take a proactive stance against this, that’s not going to happen.”
On Thursday, a U.S. District Court judge blocked large portions of the law, dealing a major blow to lawmakers in Albany who had sought to blaze a trail for other states after the Supreme Court in June struck down a century-old New York law that had strictly limited the carrying of weapons in public. Between the court challenge and the hostility of many law enforcement officers, New York’s ambitious effort could be teetering.
The judge, Glenn T. Suddaby, agreed to a three-day delay of his order to allow an emergency appeal to a higher federal court. But even before Suddaby ruled, a collection of sheriffs from upstate New York were already saying they would make no special effort to enforce the law,

Workers at the Schodack center say they want more money — pay starts at around $16 per hour. And they say the rapid pace of work poses a danger of injury and burnout.
Amazon has maintained that it takes adequate safety measures. “We do not retaliate against employees for exercising their federally protected rights. We work hard to accommodate our team’s needs, but like any employer, we ask our employees to meet certain minimum expec tations and take appropriate and consistent action when they’re unable to do that,” Amazon spokesman Paul Flaningan said in an email to the Times Union back in August.
Many of the workers at the fulfillment center are

“pickers,” or people who move items ranging from pet food bags to vacuums to microwaves from 30-foot-high shelves to special stations where they are packed up and sent on conveyor belts to waiting trucks. Items aren’t supposed to weigh more than 50 pounds, but union ac tivists say that is sometimes exceeded, and they say the speed requirements can be exhausting.
They also cite high turnover at the facility as evidence of the punishing work pace.
Cari Carter, a single mother of three, has been at Ama zon for two years and earns $18.20 an hour as a “packer,” putting items in boxes to be readied for delivery.
Her pay is barely enough to cover her rent and car payments as well as the cost of groceries, which seems to be rising constantly, she said.

Her father is a retired union heavy-equipment oper ator and he advised her to stay at the job until the union vote, she said.
If the union wins, he believes her pay will rise and her benefits will improve. If not, she said she may look elsewhere for work. increase the city water rate by 40 cents per $1,000 gallons or $5 per quarter. There is no sewer rate increase. The city garbage fee would increase by $33 to $252 annually.
Republican City Council President Carmella Mantello said she is beginning to review the proposed budget.
“While I’m pleased to see that the pro
posed budget is under the state-mandated tax cap, the proposal to increase the $219 per unit annual solid waste management fee to $252 per unit is unacceptable,” said Mantello, who has long opposed the garbage fee.
The budget has been sent to the Dem ocrat-controlled City Council for review and adoption.

“I have to enforce it because I swore to uphold the laws, but I can use as much discretion as I want,” said Richard C. Giardino, the Republican sheriff in Fulton County, northwest of Albany. “If someone intentionally flouts the law, then they’re going to be handled one way. But if someone was unaware that the rules have changed, then we’re not going to charge someone with a felony because they went into their barbershop with their carry concealed.”
Such criticism has been heard from Greene County, in the Hudson Valley, to Erie County, home to Buffalo, the state’s second-largest city, as well as from groups like the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, which called the new law a “thoughtless, reactionary action” that aims to “restrain and punish law-abiding citizens.”
“We will take the complaint, but it will go to the bottom of my stack,” said Mike Filicetti, the Niagara County sheriff, who appends a Ronald Reagan quote to his emails. “There will be no arrests made without my authorization and it’s a very, very low priority for me.”
The law took effect Sept. 1, and, at least anecdotally, has been used only sparingly since. Jeff Smith, the sheriff in mostly rural Montgomery County said his office has had no calls for enforcement of the new law, noting that “almost every household” in his jurisdiction had some sort of gun.
Smith, a Republican, said he understands the motives of lawmakers to quell violence and mass shootings, but that the gun law inadvertently targeted lawful gun owners.
“The pendulum swung way too far,” he said.
An element of the New York law makes it a crime to carry a firearm onto any private property, including homes, unless there is “clear and conspicuous signage” indicating that the owner allows such weapons. Some sheriffs have printed their own signs and distributed them to gun-friendly businesses and residents.
“I don’t think you could find one case in this country, in

United States history, where a sign said ‘SCHOOL ZONE NO GUNS PERMITTED,’ and it stopped an active shooter,” said Giardino.
For supporters of the law, the opposition is insincere, considering that sheriffs’ demands for law and order are often coupled with complaints that the state is in disarray, that crime is rampant and that the Legislature has empowered lawbreakers.
“To turn around and say, ‘For the laws that we don’t like, or we may disagree with politically, we will refuse to enforce,’ to me is the height of hypocrisy,” said state Sen. Zellnor Myrie, a Brooklyn Democrat who voted for the bill.
John Feinblatt, the president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said sheriffs weren’t just endangering the public, they were also “endangering their colleagues in law enforcement.”
Myrie added that if sheriffs are angry, they should direct their ire at the Supreme Court, noting that the majority decision in the case, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, was written by Justice Clarence Thomas, an avowed conservative — and specifically noted a historical basis for restrictions in “sensitive places.”
Kelly Roskam, the director of law and policy at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, said that the Supreme Court left many unsettled questions that lower courts must address. One particular challenge is a lack of clarity in the court’s test for constitutionality: whether a sensitive place is identical to or sufficiently similar to one that existed at the time of the Second Amendment’s adoption in the late 18th century.
For his part, Milby, a Republican elected in November, reiterated that his officers, fewer than 100 in a county of nearly 100,000 people, would not be actively pursuing offenders of the new law, although they would respond to calls about concealed weapons if they came in.
