More PFOA testing planned

Focus will include areas near former Poestenkill Landfill By KENNETH C. CROWE II

POESTENKILL - A third round of testing for PFOAs in local drinking water supplies will be started later this month, Rensselaer County said Wednesday. The state Department of Environmental Conservation also said last Wednesday that it will conduct sampling for the contaminant and other substances in groundwater near the Poestenkill Landfill site, which was capped and closed in 1993, and install monitoring wells near Algonquin Middle School to determine groundwater flow. The county is asking residents near the Algonquin Middle School

to participate in the voluntary water testing for PFOAs, or perfluorooctanoic acids. Exposure to the chemical compounds is linked to multiple health conditions, including kidney and testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, preeclampsia/ pregnancy-induced hypertension and medically diagnosed high cholesterol. The county is currently in its second round of testing with results expected to be released in the near future. “We are seeking to do more testing, gather more data and do it more quickly. We want answers just as the residents want answers,” County Executive Steve

McLaughlin said in a statement. The county and DEC announcements came nine days after a community meeting at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on the PFOA situation in town attended by about 100 people in person and another 50 people online. Those attending the meeting demanded that more be done and that the source of the contamination be found. “The town wants answers and we appreciate the county providing the resources to allow for more testing. We appreciate the support and the cooperation between the state, county and town and the efforts being made to resolve this important issue,” said Supervisor

Superfund site

DEC: Route 203 parcel is contaminated with environmental hazards By KENNETH C. CROWE II

NASSAU - The state Department of Environmental Conservation designated property on Route 203 as a state Superfund site, the second polluted location in the town to be identified as environmentally hazardous. The Route 203 location joins the Dewey Loeffel Landfill, a federal Superfund site, as being named as severely contaminated with materials including suspected carcinogens. Dewey Loeffel was named a Superfund site in 2011. “We consider it based on the context to be

related, but it’s being treated as a separate Superfund site,” Supervisor David Fleming said last Wednesday. “We have an opportunity to clean it up correctly and for it to be the gold standard for cleanup.” The Dewey Loeffel Landfill is considered a toxic dump as a result of an estimated 46,000 tons of industrial waste buried there. The toxic materials included industrial solvents, waste oil, PCBs, scrap materials, sludge and solids. DEC said that the Superfund designation for the Route 203 location indicates it is a site “that presents a significant threat to public health

and/or the environment.” Nassau officials said the site been under investigation by DEC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies since 2018. The reasons for the designation include that the “on-site soil, groundwater, and pond sediments are contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, volatile organic compounds, and metals above standards, criteria, and guidance levels,” according to the agency notice. It is believed that trucks that hauled materials to the Dewey Loeffel Landfill may have been washed out at Please see SUPERFUND 10 the Route 203

Keith Hammond in a statement. Concerns about PFOAs in local drinking water wells arose after the Averill Park Central School District reported that PFOAs had been found in water at Algonquin Middle School at 12 parts per trillion, which is above the state allowable level of 10 parts per trillion. The school’s fountains and taps were shut off. This led to the testing of 10 nearby homes with two reporting levels exceeding the state standard. The second round of testing of an additional 10 homes, mostly to the southeast of the school, is currently underway.

THE TEAM FOR EAST GREENBUSH

MATTERS: MUCH DONE, STILL MORE TO DO REGARDING TOWN FINANCES AND TAXPAYER PROTECTION The residents of East Greenbush know that their town is thriving when they can see demonstrable progress made in the delivery of their basic services and when they know that their elected representatives are advocating for them in the way of continued improvement of those services. To the benefit of East Greenbush residents, my townboard colleagues and I have worked as a team on a number of key initiatives, including the bolstering of town finances and the protection of town taxpayers:

Hollie Kennedy and Rick Matters have joined Supervisor Jack Conway, Deputy Supervisor Tina Tierney, and Councilor Bridget Fritz in improving the lives of town residents through collaborative, progressive, and responsible governance; Together, they’ve made East Greenbush a better place in which to live and work!

Much Done:

3 Successfully revived the town’s fiscal condition from junk-bond status to one of solvency, propriety, and strength, by: (1) establishing dedicated, “lockedbox” expenditure accounts; (2) conservatively and safely estimating sources of revenue; (3) subjecting the town’s finances to regular outside audits; (4) exercising consistent, under-budget spending disciple and maintaining healthy fund balances; (5) refinancing the town’s debt at a lower interest rate to save taxpayer dollars; and (6) working to hold the line on town property-tax increases through tighter budgeting practices. 3 Substantially and appropriately increased the town property-tax exemptions for veterans who have sacrificed so much for their fellow residents. 3

Revamped the town’s procurement policy and procedure to ensure competitive, cost-saving, and best-value procurement of goods and services by the town.

Still More To Do:

H Encourage the creation of sinking funds as part of the town’s financial strategy for replacing worn out and depreciated assets, resulting in secure and stable funding that will save the town from costly borrowing and reduce the need for tax increases. H Seek state legislation to put a stop to town property-tax exemptions being granted by counties for economic development, and provide East Greenbush and other towns with sole discretion over such giveaways that are granted at the expense of town taxpayers.

RE-ELECT HOLLIE KENNEDY

and MM M M RICK MATTERS

East Greenbush Town Council

Looking ahead, the progress realized on behalf of residents will serve as a springboard for continued improvement; together, they will ensure a legacy of good government in East Greenbush. Although challenging, I believe that we are up to the task. Indeed, the members of this town board endeavor to put progress over politics, strive to improve the quality of residents’ lives in our town, and are eager to keep East Greenbush growing! PFOA/PFOS Testing of Private Wells in Brunswick BRUNSWICK - Brunswick Residents, I have been concerned about the safety of my home’s well water since Hoosick Falls, all the more so because I have 2 young children. I’m sure many of you have heard about the new positive PFOA results in private & school wells in Poestenkill. I want to know with certainty that our town’s water is safe. In our county and surrounding counties, PFOA tests are coming up positive 20-30% of the time!! That is alarmingly high. The Town of Brunswick currently has no plans to

test well water in town, so I have spoken with the owner of the certified water testing lab that has handled all of the local PFOA testing, from Hoosick Falls to Poestenkill, and have made arrangements for discounted testing for Brunswick residents. If we batch our tests as residents, we will get the same deal as Poestenkill residents, bringing the cost of testing down from $500/ well to $350/well. If you are interested in testing your water, please reach out to me ASAP and we will get this going. Email JenniferMannBrunswickNY@gmail. com. If we do have positive detections in Brunswick, then we will be well positioned to find county, state

TESTING

The county would like to test a larger number of homes for the third round, but must rely on voluntary participation, said Richard Crist, the county director of operations. The county, DEC and the state Department of Health are working jointly on the investigation. The impact of PFOAs on drinking water have created heightened concern among county residents since 2014 when municipal water supplies and private wells were found to be contaminated in Hoosick, Hoosick Falls and Petersburgh from industrial sources. A source has not been determined in Poestenkill. DEC said in its community update last Wednesday that it plans “to install groundwater monitoring wells near the school to assess groundwater flow direction … to assist in identifying potential sources. DEC will also be assessing whether past activities that took place at the school could be a source of groundwater contamination.” CONTINUED FROM 3

Troy couple to be honored for promoting city’s history Nan and Tom Carroll to be recognized at Oct. 21 gala event By KENNETH C. CROWE II

Industrial historian P. Thomas Carroll with the support of his wife, Nan Carroll, took a buyout Dec. 31, 1996, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and went down from the campus above the city to South Troy to become the executive director Jan. 6, 1997, of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway on. The Carrolls’ decision for Tom, as he’s best known, to leave behind his RPI tenured position as an associate professor of history was aimed at employing Troy’s past to help redevelop the city that had seen its high points nearly a century earlier. “It was a lot of work. We did it because we believe in Troy’s heritage and we believe in how valuable that heritage is to revitalize the Troy community,” Tom Carroll said about the move. The Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway is recognizing the Carrolls as its annual gala honorees for 2021 “based on their years of dedicated service to the organization.” While Nan Carroll, a native of California, pursued her career at the state University at Albany, first as the administrative director for the Center for Women in Government in 1980 and eventually retiring in 2018 as assistant dean at the College of Engineering and Applied Science, she also volunteered at the Gateway. “Tom raised the profile of the Gateway and literally made us into a nationally recognized industrial history organization,” the Gateway said in announcing its selec-

tion. “Their longtime combined work in education, fundraising and preservation on the Burden Iron Works Museum has helped saved this historic structure from near-certain demolition. Even after Tom stepped aside as director in 2013, he continued to serve the organization as board trustee and the couple served as volunteers on numerous other tasks,” the announcement continued. Carroll estimated he raised more than $4 million for the Gateway to preserve and restore the Burden Iron Works building, support the endowment, fund annual operations and support other programs. “We’re thrilled. Nan and I are both thrilled. We didn’t do this to get any praise. It was a lot of work,” said Carroll, a fifth-generation native of Princeton, N.J., a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, better known as Cal Tech, and recipient of a doctorate in the history and sociology of science from the University of Pennsylvania. “The Gateway mission is to put the past to good use in the Silicon Valley of the 19th century to restore the community vitality after the 20th century’s neglect,” Carroll said. Stoking the Troy renaissance for Carroll went beyond saving its industrial history, which includes the manufacture of bells, the production of horseshoes for the Union Army during the Civil War, the casting of iron plates for the U.S.S. Monitor, pioneering steel production, building cast iron stoves and the famous collar industry that gives Troy its nickname, “Collar City.” Carroll said he is most proud of the work he did with

Joan Warrender, the Gateway’s marketing coordinator, and other committee members to help bring the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market to downtown in 2000. He said the market has played a key role in the city’s revitalization by bringing thousands of visitors and shoppers in every Saturday. The gala honoring Nan and Tom Carroll will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Franklin Terrace Ballroom, located at 126 Campbells Ave. It will include buffet style food, live music, soft drinks and silent auction. Chaplain the link between police and the community Bishop Macklin sees role as bridge for communication and better understanding By KENNETH C. CROWE II

Bishop Norman R. Macklin sees himself playing the inside game when it comes to police reform. Macklin is a presence at the pulpit of the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church at 313 10th St., on the southern border of the North Central neighborhood. And he’s also on the street and sometimes riding in patrol cars with a badge hanging around his neck standing out from his clerical suit. “I work with the Troy Police Department as a chaplain. I’m a chaplain with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office and the county jail. The East Green-bush Police Department appointed me chaplain three months ago,” Macklin said running through a list of three Rensselaer County police agencies. Macklin said he’s seen the demonstrations that grew out of the killing of George Floyd in May 2020 by four Minneapolis police officers. He works with inmates in the jail. He said he’s seen the crime on Capital Region streets that no residents want to endure. He balances both in his decision on serving the three law enforcement departments as a chaplain.

“If you want to reform the system, you work with the people in the system,” Macklin said. Macklin has a history of involvement. He founded the Oneonta Chapter of the NAACP and served as an adviser to that city’s mayor and the president of the State College at Oneonta. He served seven years as the treasurer of the Interdenominational Ministers Conference of the Capital Region. Macklin founded the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in 2010. And, he serves as president of the Troy African American Pastors Alliance, which plays a pivotal role in the Black community’s interactions with city government. Macklin cites the recent promotion of Troy Police Captain Anthony Conyers as an example of the support and efforts that go on behind the scenes. Conyers made history when he became the city’s first Black police officer to rise in the 137-member department’s command ranks. “That was a highlight that he would be a captain. He’s been a shining star in the department,” the bishop said. The soft-spoken Macklin sees his role inside the police departments as being a bridge to the outside, encouraging communication and understanding. He’s inside

listening to officers, speaking to the chief, riding on patrol and helping them understand the minority community that hasn’t had the best relations with the mostly white LORI VAN BUREN / TIMES UNION police force. “I’m trying to be the Bishop Norman Macklin of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church connection between is the chaplain for the police and the police and the fire departments in Troy, Renssecommunity. We need laer County Sheriff’s Office and the the police. We need county jail, and the East Greenbush safety and security,” Police Department. Macklin said. “I think there’s a change in the country. People are starting to have a change in attitude toward the police,” Macklin said. Troy’s minority community is tired of the gunfire and crime that’s been occurring, Macklin said. That’s opening up communication, he said. Please see CHAPLAIN 40 Part of his drive is to work

AARON ST. ONGE, OWNER

AVERILL PARK - Hi Warriors fans! My name is Tyler Michaels, and this year, I will be featuring one senior every week who has been a role model on and off of the field. I look forward to learning more about these exemplary students with you! This week’s Scholar Athlete of the Week is Sydney Ferguson. Sydney plays second singles on the Varsity tennis team. Before her tennis career, Sydney had been playing soccer for a decade. However, after playing soccer her freshman year Sydney decided to try tennis the next year, and quickly fell in love with the sport. Sydney plays with an indoor tennis team to continue playing after her season, and tries to get onto the courts as much as possible as the weather warms up. Even before preseason begins, Sydney is practicing three times a week. Sydney’s favorite part about tennis is the self-dependence that comes with it. “There is no reliance on anyone else, and success comes from myself.” However, the mental aspect of tennis can be challenging for Sydney. Sydney thinks that keeping yourself focused and maintaining a positive mental attitude for the entire match can be challenging, especially in long or difficult matches. This year, Sydney hopes to simply have fun with her tennis season. Although she is putting her all into every match, Sydney wants to ensure that she is enjoying herself during her senior season. In addition to her athletic success, Sydney excels academically. Sydney has a 98.3 GPA while taking a rigorous course load, including AP Government and Politics and AP English 12. Sydney is the president of International Club at Averill Park, and in her spare time she enjoys walking, hiking, reading, and being with friends and family. To balance school and sports, Sydney plans her workload, and when she has time to get work done. Sydney also treats tennis as her break time, and since she enjoys it so much she is ready to focus on schoolwork once practice is over. Sydney’s inner drive for success keeps her working hard. Despite her busy schedule, Sydney constantly puts her all into everything she does. Sydney’s cousin Zach also helped teach her how to play tennis when she first started playing. Sydney’s parents, coaches, and teammates have all inspired her every step of the way, and Sydney is truly grateful to have an amazing group of people supporting her. Although it may sound contrary to others’ advice, Sydney would advise younger athletes that it is okay to quit. “Sometimes quitting is the brave thing to do. I played soccer for ten years before I quit playing for the school. I didn’t love it as much as I used to, and my intuition was telling me that I could be happier somewhere else. And once I found tennis, I was a whole lot happier. It was hard sometimes because I came into it so late, but I had a real desire to do well because I love it. I work so hard for it because I love it. It’s normal for passions to change and for people to grow. So listen to yourself. You know what’s best for you.” Next year, Sydney plans on attending a four year college, and continue to get her Master’s degree. Sydney is not certain what she wants to major in yet, but has multiple areas she is interested in. Sydney also hopes to play tennis at college, whether it is club or intramural. We wish Sydney the best as she finishes her senior year and prepares for college.

Dear Friend, One of my greatest privileges has been to serve you as your County Clerk these past 24 years. When I first ran, I promised to serve you as your County Clerk every day and to place your interests first. I am writing to tell you about another Clerk who has the devotion and commitment to her town and residents to serve them first. That person is your Sand Lake Town Clerk Barbara Hansen and I am honored to wholeheartedly endorse her bid for another term. As we know, Barbara has devoted her life serving the great residents of Sand Lake, working as a Town data collector then serving as Deputy Town Clerk to my dear friend Barbara Biittig. Barb took office as our Town Clerk under tragic circumstances, as Barb Biittig was taken away from us way too early. Despite the tragedy, Barb Hansen made sure that all residents had no issues getting services from the Clerk’s office, whether it be passport services, dog licenses and other essential services she provides. During the COVID crisis, Barb made sure that her office stayed open to residents, serving in a fullservice manner even as other offices throughout the county and state were closed. Barb also has implemented credit card payments for all town clerk transactions and was instrumental in securing grant money to repair recent flood damage of the clerk’s record vault. I cannot think of a clerk who came to office during such trying times and was able to seamlessly perform her duties at the outstanding level residents have come to expect. Like every good Town Clerk, Barb is a pillar of the Sand Lake community. Barb has volunteered to oversee the Sand Lake military banner program which honors our community veterans in such a visual fashion. Barb also assists Sand Lake residents with disabilities and worked with the Averill Park School district to obtain the necessary permits and insurance for the Class of 2021 to have their last day of school breakfast. Her dedication and love of community is the major reason why she is an outstanding Town Clerk. I am honored to wholeheartedly endorse Barb Hansen for another term as your Sand Lake Town Clerk. I hope to work with Barb for many years as a friend and partner in local and County government. Thank you for this opportunity and please continue to stay safe. Frank Merola, Your Rensselaer County Clerk

Local Author Pens 3rd Book In Memory of 2008 AP Grad Kasie Collins AVERILL PARK - The family of Kasie Collins is excited to announce the release of the third children’s book in the series “Adventures for Kasie”, written by Jennifer Barbic of Colonie, in memory of her cousin, Kasie Collins, who passed away in 2018. A graduate of Averill Park High School, SUNY Geneseo and UMass Amherst, Kasie became a respected environmental scientist, a fierce dog lover, and a zealous adventure seeker. She lived life to the fullest and loved with her whole heart, leaving a legacy of compassion and selfless service to others. Each year since her passing, Jenn and her son, Jake, have written a fantastical children’s book that follows young Kasie’s outlandish adventures with her friends and her dog, Luna. The stories are illustrated by children who knew and loved Kasie, including her nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The newest book, Schmergola’s Pergolas, follows books one and two, Luna Moona and The Great Mona Caper. All proceeds from sales of the Adventures for Kasie books are donated to the AFSP in Kasie’s honor, and are matched, dollar for dollar, by Kasie’s former employer, GZA Geoenvironmental. Books are available at Barnesandnoble. com. portraying some of our famous -- and infamous -- very long-term “residents.” There will be one sit-down presentation at the cemetery 3:30 Sunday, October 17 (rain date October 24th). Help Pets Be Less Anxious At Home Pets experience anxiety for many reasons. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, pet anxiety is often a byproduct of aging, separation and/or fear. Fear may be caused by loud noises, strange people or animals, visual stimuli, or even textile feelings from grass or tile f loors. Separation anxiety, which occurs when animals are unable to self-comfort when left alone, is believed to affect around 14 percent of dogs, according to the American Kennel Club. Animals may get more anxious as they age and their cognitive abilities begin to decline. Recognizing the causes of anxiety in a pet can help pet parents figure out how to make a home more comfortable and alleviate its anxiety. There are various remedies that may work. • Introduce new people and stimuli gradually. Anxiety may arise when a pet meets a new animal or person or when there’s a change in the home environment, such as the introduction of a new pet. Do not force interactions and remain patient. Anxiety may dissipate over time as the pet learns that the new stimulus is not a threat. • Try counterconditioning. According to the AKC, counterconditioning changes the pet’s response to stimuli responsible for anxiety by replacing anxious or aggressive behavior with desirable behavior, such as sitting and focusing on you. A professional dog trainer can help direct this process. • Provide safe areas. Pets may need their own places to get away from things when they feel overwhelmed. In such instances, a crate can come in handy and provide a respite. Your pet can seek out the crate when it’s tired or anxious. The crate can be moved into a quiet room when company comes over or if there is thunder or fireworks. • Limit stimuli as much as possible. Speak with people who visit your home and educate them about what might set off your pet’s anxiety. While you may not be able to prevent every anxiety trigger, you can limit situations that may cause your pet to get worked up. You also can take steps by closing curtains when leaving home (if outdoor animals provoke anxiety), turning on white noise, using soothing aromatherapy oils and scents, and being aware of noisy situations. • Remain calm. Pet owners may inadvertently be driving their animals’ anxiety by the tone and postures they take. Animals take their cues from people’s energy. A calm foot forward with your pet can tame their anxiety. Speak with a vet and a trainer if a pet experiences uncontrollable anxiety. These professionals may suggest other strategies, including training or medications, that have been effective with other animals.

Benefits Of Pet Crates, and How To Make Them Cozy A spi r i ng pet ow ners purchase various items before they welcome a new companion animal into their homes. Food, collars, leashes, toys, and preventive medications are just some of the items necessary to keep pets happy and safe. Large animals like dogs and cats often benefit from crates and carriers as well. Though some individua ls a nd a nima l r ig hts organizations are against crates, when used responsibly, crates can be useful in various ways. • Crates provide a safe space. Cer tain anima ls have a natural instinct to bed down in dens. While some homes have areas that serve as cozy nooks, a crate set aside in a quiet room can replicate a safe den for the pet when he or she is stressed or tired and simply needs some time away. A pet may seek out this “den” on its own or can be placed there by an owner when the animal needs to calm down. Children should be advised to leave crated animals alone. • A s s i s t w it h h ou s e training. Many animals

prefer not to soil where they sleep. Therefore, a pet w ill not void in the crate, provided it is sized correctly, and will learn to gradually hold it until it is granted access to the proper place to relieve itself. • Keep areas off limits. Cordoned off areas surrounded by gates may work for some pets, but certain dogs are able to scale or circumvent such barriers. A closed crate provides a safe option when the animal cannot be supervised and has not yet demonstrated it can be trusted to have free reign of the home. When selecting and outfitting a crate, pet owners should keep certain things in mind. • Be sure there is adequate ventilation so that the animal can breathe comfortably. Wire crates, which are among the most popu la r, w i l l a l low for plenty of air flow and enable the pet to see his or her environment. • Seek out a crate that is rated for travel so that you’ll get double duty out of the item. Keeping pets contained in a moving vehicle is a safer way to travel.

• Monitor your pet to determine what you can put inside the crate. Some trainers recommend feeding and watering your pet in the crate to make the animal more comfortable with it. Comfortable bedding or a favorite toy or blanket may help provided your pet is not a chewer (and swallower) and can be trusted with these items overnight. • Remove ha rnesses, collars and other items from the pet before placing it in the crate to reduce the risk of strangulation or injury. • Limit the time the pet spends in the crate to allow for exercise and stretching. The pet should be able to stand up and reposition in the crate, but the crate should not be large enough that the dog can soil on one side and rest on the other. The crate should never be a punishment tool. • If the pet messes inside the crate, clean it promptly. Crates are useful tools for pet owners. When used responsibly, crates can serve as safe havens and training tools for pets.

An article in the American Vegan Quarterly states that it is not possible for a Native American to be a vegan. Read it in the Summer 2021 issue, page 24, by Vincent Schilling. According to the American Vegan Society, “a vegan (pronounced VEE-gun) is one who eats only from the plant kingdom: vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds. Vegans express nonviolence towards animals and the Earth. AVS promotes good health practices and harmonious living.” AVS further explains that “cattle farmers want a monopoly on the use of common meat and dairy product terms. Let’s talk about dairy. We approve defining dairy products, but not their way. Since the words milk, cream, butter, and cheese have been used for centuries for various products, we need to use precise language. We propose the dairy farmers label their products as cow’s milk, cow’s cream, cow’s butter, cow’s cheese, goat’s cheese, etc. Coconut milk has been around since early human times. The history of soymilk and soy cheese (tofu) production

goes back two thousand years. Indigenous people on this continent made milk and cheese with nuts long before Europeans arrived. Today’s markets offer soy, almond, rice, seed milk and oat milks.” Jokes: 1. A little girl was sent off to Sunday school with a quarter to put in the collection basket and a quarter for herself. As she was skipping and hopping and singing down the sidewalk, one of the quarters slipped out of her hand, rolled down the sidewalk, and dropped into the drain. She went to the drain, leaned over and said sadly, “There goes Jesus’s quarter.” 2. On their 1st date, the young man was ordering her dinner from the menu. He said to her, “How do you like your rice, boiled or fried?” She said, “Thrown.” For more information, visit americanvegan.org. Contact Glendora’s Vegetarian Club at 518 931-0266 in Albany NY.

HOUSE OF THE WEEK 24 Broad Street, Kinderhook

PHOTOS BY TIM LEE

A brick mansion built in 1765 at 24 Broad St., Kinderhook is on the market.

W

hether or not British Gen. John Burgoyne actually stayed at this circa-1765 mansion as the marker out front proclaims, this place oozes history. Built for David Van Schaack, a member of a powerful Dutch family with deep ties in Kinderhook and Columbia County, the Georgian manor home has 5,796 square feet of living space, four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. The wings were added in the early 19th century. The house has been beautifully maintained and decorated by its current owners, a pair of antiques LEIGH dealers. The couple bought the HORNBECK house in 2005 as a summer HOUSE OF home and made it their primary THE WEEK residence in 2013. Four of the fireplaces are operable and there are deep window seats, an abundance of gorgeous woodwork and a modern kitchen. List price: $2,950,000. Taxes: $29,000. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Advertiser Back in the Spring of 1983, The Advertiser ran an article on how my father, Ron, and I had moved up from New Jersey to the Town of Nassau and purchased the Burden Lake Country Club. The Golf Course was maintained but in need of a long-term commitment. The Clubhouse was structurally falling apart and the nine- hole golf course needed an overhaul. We had very little capital but we put everything we had back into the business. By the year 2000, we decided to expand to 18 holes and build a new clubhouse. We went into debt, but we believed we would grow our business to the next level. Thanks to our Members, we survived the debt and doubled our annual sales. We expanded to over 50 Employees and over time we have become a community supporter and raised thousands of dollars for local charities. As we finish our 39th Summer at Burden Lake Country Club, I want to reflect on how many young people learned how to play the game. We have employed over a thousand local residents and we have paid millions in property tax, school tax, federal tax, state tax, unemployment tax, sales tax and more!!!! Unlike most people, my Dad and I followed a dream and I can say we finally completed that dream in 2021. I plan to work at Burden Lake CC through 2032 so that I can say I put 50 years into our business. In 2021, I purchased the Evergreen Country Club in the Town of Schodack with my friend, Scott Bendett. I am starting a new dream with Scott and we plan to bring back the Golf Course and Clubhouse in 2022. With the support of other local Professionals, we will make a quick turnaround to the Golf Course. Schodack and East Greenbush residents have fond memories of Cordial Greens/ Evergreen and we plan to return the property to a Community destination. The new name will be the Old Post Road Golf Club with a future name for the Clubhouse later. We will need employees for full time and part-time positions and we will generate sales tax revenue to help the local tax base. I have read articles recently, in the Advertiser, on how we can tax others, raise property taxes, raise school taxes, push other businesses out of our area if they don’t want to pay extra! Please don’t listen to these people that sit at home and never take a chance to follow a dream and really help the community they live in. Hard work and a desire to succeed will make Nassau, Schodack and Sand Lake a better place to live. I look forward to My next dream at Old Post Road Golf Club and I hope you all will enjoy what is created for the Community. Tom Choquette

A Definition of Patriotism I would venture to say that most of us would struggle to define what patriotism means, but we know it when we see it. Perhaps, for some, it’s demonstrated by flying the flag in your front yard, singing the national anthem, or serving in the armed forces. I would say that patriotism, a love of country, has to include of love of, and concern for, your fellow citizens. That could mean helping an elderly neighbor, mentoring a child, volunteering at a food pantry. There are countless ways to show that concern and for putting their needs above your own. So, to me, getting a Covid vaccine and wearing a mask, demonstrates your commitment to insuring a healthy community, a concern

for the person seated next to you in the pew at church, standing in front of you in line at the store, for the 4 year old who isn’t yet eligible for the vaccine, for the cancer survivor whose immune system is compromised. We have the chance to put this pandemic behind us, but only if all of us do what is necessary to end it, only if all of us show our patriotism by showing we care about our fellow man. Confusion reigns in Poestenkill over PFOA Talk about confusion reigning, misinformation flowing, and ignorance on display, that is how the “media circus” and political dog-and-pony show staged by Poestenkill Councilman Eric Wohlleber starring former Obama-era EPA administrator Judy Enck on 27 September 2021 in Poestenkill would have to be described. First off, we had Poestenkill water manager Bob Brunet telling us, in reference to the PFOA contamination in the groundwater in Poestenkill, “These problems are caused by wells,” which has to be one of the most ridiculous statements ever to come out of what passes for “government” in Poestenkill. Then we had Judy Enck, who was invited to speak by Poestenkill councilman Eric Wohlleber, telling us “I think the state agencies have to be in the lead because they’re far more experienced and have more resources than the county, I think they need to drive this process.” And that was followed by Poestenkill councilman Eric Wohlleber himself undermining his own witness Judy Enck by stating “I have zero confidence in DOH and DEC, I feel like they have not learned their lesson from Hoosick Falls.” So who are we to believe? Both of them? And we had Bob Brunet telling us, after blaming the problems on our wells, “connect to our water from Troy, I’ve done all sorts of elevation calculation of mileage calculators, fully feasible, can be done,” this at the same time we are reading on the town propaganda site as follows: We now have full pressure through MOST of the water district. Keeping in mind that the present water district only covers a portion of the town and would have to be extended, that is an admission by the Town that the present existing water district already has an inadequate public water supply, and I am hearing complaints from residents in the existing water district about pressure problems in the morning when everyone is up and getting ready for work. So how does Bob Brunet think it is feasible to extend it? To date, no answers! Paul Plante, Poestenkill

Town of Schodack Board- Time for Change So, since the current town board has not changed the ancient inefficient town noise ordinance (starts at Mid-Night and is 27 years old--meaning anyone can make as much noise as long as they want to until MidNight), will new people running for Town Supervisor and Town Board make a commitment to actual residents in this town instead of catering to just business? Will the residents of Schodack get what all other towns in NYS

have--proper noise ordinaces? Why are residents in this town not afforded this right? Mr. Kenney said in his reelection 2 years ago, “Change is coming.” Maybe this election is what he means..... Let’s see if a new Supervisor (Tracey Rex) and new board members- Michael Charsky and Michael Hiser can actually work for the people of Schodack. Mr. Harris, Mr. Bult, and Mr. Swartz have been silent on this issue for years! Time for change! Scott Burdick, Castleton on Hudson

Not Your Grandfather’s Republicans Many voters say “I vote for the person, not the party.” Therefore, Democrats and Independents should question their local Republican candidates regarding their personal views on their party, and do they represent the views of today’s Republicans. It is a party that is not your grandfather’s Republicans’, with an authoritarian bent, Q-Anon, right wing militias, Proud Boys and Donald Trump having the power. In Rensselaer County, authoritarian Steve “I’m the f-ing boss” McLaughlin admits to being the “f-ing boss” in the infamous T-U recording. In these pages, right-wing comments have repeatedly called for violent insurrection, i.e. Civil War. We have 2 local men convicted of illegal weapons charges. They were spotted at a peaceful BLM protest in Troy, and later found with illegal assault weapons, illegal high capacity magazines, and militia training literature. A flag flies on 2nd Dyke Road above a sign for a local Republican Town Council candidate proclaiming that the 2020 election was rigged, and Trump was the winner. Therefore, I feel that all local candidates running as Republicans need to answer a few basic questions they don’t dare answer. 1) 66% of Republicans think that Joe Biden is not the duly elected president. Did Joe Biden legally win the Presidency, or was it stolen from Trump? 2) 55% of Republicans feel that violence may be required to “get the country back on track” Do you agree? 3) 57% of New York Republicans want to repeal the Safe Act prohibiting the possession of assault weapons and high capacity magazines like our Sand Lake Insurrectionists? Do you support repeal of the Safe Act? Rensselaer County Voters, please take a look behind the Republican candidates to find out who they really are. Ask them these questions. Who are they really? Bill Baker, Burden Lake

Protecting the Unborn Should First Come from the Heart The recent Texas law sharply restricting abortions represents a good step in the right direction. Its enforcement structure is novel and has not been taken up by the Supreme Court. I’m not especially confident the law will survive future judicial review or legislative bypass, unless Roe v. Wade itself is reversed. Moreover, though, I hope to see abortion end in a way that is not initially prompted by a legislative measure or judicial fiat. I’d first like to see an overwhelming majority of Americans deeply thinking about the actual meaning of abortion, and then condemning such an abomination. Frank Coppa, East Greenbush

OPINION We Should Arm Taiwan To The Teeth By Rich Lowry

We warned China to stop its incursions into Taiwan's air defense identification zone and the Chinese responded by flying even more aircraft into the zone. The 56 Chinese flights last Monday brought the total for October to 149, already the year's highest monthly total. The flights have been steadily increasing in recent years, as Beijing harries Taiwan and demonstrates its discontent with the island nation's closer relationship to the United States. The Chinese may also want to wear down the Taiwanese by forcing them to constantly respond. Regardless, the flights underscore why Taiwan is the most dangerous and potentially most consequential flashpoint on Earth. If China can successfully absorb Taiwan while limiting the military, economic, and diplomatic costs, it would vindicate President Xi's vision of an ascendant China undoing past humiliations, represent a milestone in China's campaign to establish hegemony in the most important region of the world, and, perhaps, collapse the credibility and global position of the United States. On the other hand, a debacle in Taiwan could have devastating economic and diplomatic consequences for China, threatening Xi's rule. In other words, attention must be paid -- the trajectory of the modern world is conceivably at stake. The Trump administration began to reorient the U.S. defense posture toward this threat, and the Biden administration has followed up, most importantly, with the nuclear submarine deal with Australia. It's been completely obvious for a long time that China has been preparing, if it so chooses, to take Taiwan by force of arms, and keep us from being able to do anything about it. It has massively increased its force of ballistic missiles, better to target a wide array of ships and hold at risk U.S. ground units. Prior to the latest, more serious iteration of the missile threat, Tom Shugart of the Center for New American Security estimated that a preemptive Chinese strike on our bases in the region "could crater every runway and runway-length taxiway at every major U.S. base in Japan, and destroy more than 200 aircraft on the ground." China has been churning out long-range strike aircraft and engaged in a historic naval buildup. It now has the largest navy in the world. Nonetheless, invading and occupying Taiwan after launching a gigantic, logistically taxing amphibious operation across a 110-mile strait would be no small feat, to put it mildly. It should be our objective to keep China at bay, toward the goal of keeping it from establishing its dominance over Asia, as former Trump defense official Elbridge Colby argues in his compelling new book "The Strategy of Denial." But the Taiwanese haven't exhibited the urgency one would expect of an island of 24 million people coveted by a nearby nation of 1.4 billion people that makes no secret of its compulsion to try to swallow it whole. Until a few years ago, Taiwan's defense budget was shockingly inadequate. Its military reserves are lackluster. Its frontline units tend not to operate at full strength. It has often been seduced by the allure of so-called prestige weapons, such as top-end fighter aircraft that are irrelevant to its predicament. We should be fortifying Taiwan and making it as difficult as possible for China to take. That means stockpiling food, energy and munitions against a Chinese blockade. It means making its infrastructure more resilient and enhancing its cyber capabilities. It means increasing its capability to detect an early mustering of Chinese forces. It means more mines, anti-ship missiles, air-defense capabilities and unmanned systems to frustrate a cross-strait invasion. The Chinese have been focused on "area denial," missiles and the like to deny our access to Taiwan and its environs. But these capabilities can be turned against China, too. If we are ever inclined to forget about how pressing the threat is, not to worry, the Chinese will have more flights or other provocations to remind us. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

Woody Woodpecker Is Not Laughing

By Bob Franken

Unless you're a member of the Audubon Society, you're about to learn more about woodpeckers than you ever thought you'd know. Or care to. I hate those detective shows where they say, "I'm sorry for your loss." But yeah, it's like that. I'm REALLY sorry for your loss because, I don't know how to break it to you, but Woody Woodpecker is dead. He's been officially declared extinct by a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which keeps track of such things. Amy Trahan wrote the official report on the demise of the ivory-billed woodpecker -- the species that was the model for Universal Studios' character Woody, of "Heh-heh-heh-HEH-heh" fame. He (or she) is not to be confused with the pileated woodpecker, which makes more of a jackhammer sound as he scrounges for bugs (don't we all) in a tree's bark. This is the genuine Woody, an ivory-billed. He hasn't been seen, that we know of, since back in 2005 in Arkansas. He (or she) was unmistakable. He was a big bird. In fact, (choose your pronoun) was nicknamed "The Lord God Bird," because when people saw one they'd exclaim, "Lord God! What a bird!" But 2005 was the last time and long enough. "He no longer exists," said Ms. Trahan. And she checked the box for "delist based on extinction." Since 1973, when Congress passed the Endangered Species Act, 54 plants and animals have been delisted, but millions more are expected in the coming decade. That's because of various human abuses, including hunting, property development, mining and the biggie, the double-C, climate change. Oh, thank heaven, you were worrying that I was writing an ornithology column, not a political one. But here I am on familiar turf, where everyone agrees that global warming is an urgent problem, a disaster, actually, except for the miners, energy conglomerates, all the other special

interests and the mealy-mouthed politicians who represent constituencies they rely on to get them re-elected instead of trying to save the entire planet. Woody is just a canary in a coal mine -- more like a woodpecker, really -- a warning of pending doom. How about record-setting heat waves, hurricanes, floods and massive droughts at the same time, and glaciers falling off and slush where frozen oceans used to be? One problem is that climate is worldwide; it's not a national issue. If one country decides to ignore it or doles out a weak response, particularly if motivated by economic concerns, another country cannot make up for it. If a demagogue leader can't see the political or fundraising benefit of going against powerful special interests, the cheap shot artist can easily ridicule what's necessary to reverse climate change. Donald Trump spewed carbon over the entire concept. Joe Biden turned around most of what Trump did, but it wasn't nearly enough to change the relentless heating up of Earth. That is going to take genuine sacrifice or ingenuity. Otherwise, by midcentury -- mid THIS century -- our cities will be flooded with the melt from nonfrozen tundras far away, that are nowhere near as distant. And at the same time, the desert will be expanded. Unless we take meaningful action -- and by "meaningful" I mean universal solar and wind energy, along with hydrogen batteries, along with relocating where the coal is NOT and the whole gamut of traditional fuels -- and all of us, not just a few of us, think outside the box, we will wallow in fire. It will be too late to save Woody Woodpecker, or Sammy Salmon or, for that matter, Harry or Harriet Human. Bob Franken is an Emmy Award-winning reporter who covered Washington for more than 20 years with CNN.

OPINION

Entitlements Dependence and Puerto Rico

Gary Franks, Tribune Content Agency

Increasing universal plans that allow all those who qualify to receive certain benefits, regardless of how good the plans may be, is a clear and present danger to America as we simply cannot afford to do so. Our national debt is nearly $29 trillion dollars. COVID-19 spending is adding to that debt. This is not the time to expand. Compounding the problem is the fact that the Biden administration has allowed thousands of undocumented immigrants to enter the country on an almost daily basis. Most of these non citizens could immediately or quickly qualify for many of the entitlement programs and benefits that should be reserved for Americans alone, like health care and public education. Question? Who is going to pay for all this? Future generations? Are we simply going to increase our debt and borrow more money from our friends and foes, like China? This is not good government, nor is it sustainable. Some Members of Congress should understand this very clearly. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory that comes the closest to being an entitlement state. Nearly 70 percent of its residents have housing subsidized by the federal government. At least 43 percent of Puerto Rico residents qualify for supplemental nutrition programs, as they live below the poverty level. More than 60 percent receive Medicare or Medicaid. More than $17 billion in welfare funds flow into Puerto Rico each year for this type of assistance. Being beholden to the U.S. government is not what we want Americans to have to experience. Since 2017, Puerto Rico has also been on the verge of bankruptcy. Subsequently, Puerto Rico had the largest drop in population of all the states and territories. About 12 percent of the people of Puerto Rico have left the island since 2010, according to the 2020 Census. My home state of Connecticut - one of the wealthiest states in the nation - ranks as one of the top destination locations for Puerto Rico's fleeing residents, Florida is another. History shows that socialistic practices used in 1607 by early settlers to Jamestown and by Plymouth settlers in 1620, were not the best way to go. Those attempts at a socialism-like society where everyone shared and benefited equally failed miserably. However, should capitalism break up monopolies? YES! Should we force all companies to put the American people's interest above those of their shareholders?

YES! It should not be all about the "Benjamins." After all, without Americans those companies would not have those huge profits that they share among shareholders. In 2020, Americans rejected the Senate's lone democratic socialist, Bernie Sanders and the far-left progressives in the Democrat Party. President Biden should not allow Mr. Sanders to usurp his presidency. Biden has claimed that the $3.5 trillion package presently before Congress that ensures more "universal" entitlement programs was his plan, but it is far more likely Mr. Sanders' influence is apparent. Add to that is the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package which Speaker Pelosi is holding up until the Democrats can pass both provisions. A whopping nearly $5 trillion on top of all the COVID-19 spending. Wow! The last time we expanded government via an entitlement was during the Obama administration. During the Obama years, the federal debt rose from $11 trillion to just under $20 trillion. In 2019, 62 percent of our budget went to mandatory spending. Expanding programs as the far-left/socialist desire would automatically trigger more spending, increasing the bite from available resources, and add a debt service of 8 percent and defense spending of 15 percent. This leaves 15 cents to the dollar for all discretionary spending, down from 60 cents a few decades ago. Even aggressive tax increases would be hard-pressed to keep up. I have never seen a federal entitlement eliminated. They have all become permanent. Senators Manchin and Sinema are fighting the good fight to save America from this unsustainable path. Hopefully, they will not quit their fight. Crude tactics of the far left like following a person into the bathroom, accosting them, and then filming them as they enter a stall is sad and pathetic. It is highly disappointing for President Biden to say - "part of the process ... it happens." Never in my 12 years as an elected official had there been an incident where a politician was confronted in this way. Pray that Sen. Sinema and Sen. Manchin stay strong. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney of your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. to expand the minority ranks in public safety to better reflect the diversity of the community. Macklin said it’s a constant push to get Black men and women to consider applying for jobs in police and fire departments, where the pay and benefits are good. The campaigns to spur recruitment and opportunities to get training can help, he said. Macklin noted that the Troy Fire Department has four minorities in EMT training through Hudson Valley Community College that will help them qualify for jobs as firefighters. Troy requires its firefighters to also be certified to work on the department’s ambulances. “The fire department is a tough nut. We don’t have as many people that are interested in being firefighters. They’re good-paying jobs,” Macklin said. “I hope we can recruit more minorities to join the police and fire departments.” CONTINUED FROM 11

Registration Open for 105th Anniversary Troy Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Morning: TROY - Officials at the Troy Turkey Trot, presented by Pioneer, have opened registration for the event’s 105th anniversary on Thanksgiving morning (Thursday, Nov. 25) at TroyTurkeyTrot.com. A signature event of the Collar City’s holiday festivities, the Trot begins at 8 a.m. with the Capital Region’s only Thanksgiving Day 10K. The 10K course will close at 9:30 a.m. to facilitate the start of the Grade School Mile and Turkey Walk at 9:30 a.m. The shorter 5K distance kicks off at 10 a.m. Both the 10K and 5K feature “out and back” course configurations which start at 4th and Fulton Streets and finish at River Street’s Monument Square. Family members are invited to show their support by cheering on loved ones. Besides offering a welcome return to in-person racing, this year’s Trot will again feature a virtual option for those concerned about being around others or who plan to be away. Virtual participants will use a custom mobile app, which allows them to race with others, real time, regardless of their location.
