Word offensive to Native American women removed from sites across state, U.S.
By KENNETH C. CROWE II
STEPHENTOWN — A Rensselaer County swamp has a new name, reflecting the federal government’s plan to eliminate an offensive term.
Squaw Swamp has been renamed Black Swamp, the U.S. Department of the Interior recently announced. It’s one of about 650 place names across the country that were changed to rename geographic features such as a swamp, island, creek or mountain that contained the word. A federal online map shows the locations of the changes.
“A final vote from the Board on Geographic Names completed historic efforts to remove a term from federal use that has historically been used as an offensive ethnic, racial and sexist slur, particularly for Indigenous women,” the Department of the Interior said in announcing the changes.
The renamed Black Swamp is one of 11 places in New York that dropped the word. The others are in the counties of Essex, Jefferson, Nassau County, St. Lawrence, Tioga, Yates and Hamilton — where had four places using the word. The new name may come from the nearby Black Brook or Black Pond. The Rensselaer County swamp is the only site in the Capital Region that’s on the list.
“Almost every young woman growing up on a reservation going into a nonreservation school has heard that term, has been called that. It was mean, and it was spiteful and it was hurtful,” said Bobbi Webster, director of communications for the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, in a comment released by the Department of the Interior.
Webster said Friday dropping of the “s-word” was a step forward.
Forest steward Fred McCagg, left, Jim Bonesteel, executive director at Rensselaer Plateau Alliance; Annie Jacobs, communications director at RPA; and Jeff Briggs, director board of directors at RPA, look over the Big Beaver Bog in the Poestenkill Community Forest last November in Sand Lake. Rensselaer Plateau Alliance has worked to protect the area from ooding to combat climate change.

“It’s progress. It’s minute progress. It’s moving in the right direction. It’s long overdue. The clarification to the general public is it’s not a word to be used,” Webster said.
There are many different stories about the meaning of the word, Webster said. “There’s not clarity of definition.”
The meaning and origination of the word has been reported and debated for decades from the publication “Indian Country Today”
to the Smithsonian Institution archives to other publications. Articles touch on possible origins in New England due it being potentially derived from a Mohawk word “ojiskwa,” which describes female anatomy.
The Online Etymology Dictionary entry said it was, “Native American woman,” 1630s, from Massachusett (Algonquian) squa “woman” (cognate with Narraganset squaws “woman”). It also noted it had developed a derogatory meaning and was “widespread in U.S. place names.”
On Nov. 19, 2021, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland issued an order declaring the word to be a derogatory term and set forward procedures to remove it from federal use.
“Racist terms have no place in our vernacular or on our federal lands. Our nation’s lands and waters should be places to celebrate the outdoors and our shared cultural heritage — not to perpetuate the legacies of oppression,” Haaland, a member of the Hopi Tribe, said in a statement.
“Today’s actions will accelerate an important process to reconcile derogatory place names and mark a significant step in honoring
The charges against McLaughlin, however, were filed by state prosecutors, not the FBI.
NORTH GREENBUSH — U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik used the backdrop of a county nursing home to renew her demand for an investigation of former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo for his administration’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, including a decision to withhold from the public data on the deaths in facilities that provide care for elderly residents.
And she defended the elected official who stood next to her at Monday’s event outside Van Rensselaer Manor: Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin, who faces felony charges for the alleged misuse of campaign funds.
The Schuylerville Republican called the charges against McLaughlin “a political witch hunt. The FBI is absolutely politicized and weaponized.”
McLaughlin, a former state assemblyman, was indicted late last year by a grand jury on counts of grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing for allegedly stealing $5,000 from his campaign account in November 2017. McLaughlin allegedly funneled that sum through a consulting firm run by a political ally, Rich Crist, in order to pay back a loan to a former legislative staff member just weeks after he won his first term as county executive.
“Most importantly, the people of Rensselaer County stand overwhelmingly with Steve,” Stefanik said, noting the wide margin of his re-election last year — just weeks before he was indicted.
Stefanik repeated her attacks on the FBI (“We see at all levels, the FBI have been weaponized to go after Republicans”), despite that agency having no apparent role in the charges against McLaughlin.
Federal investigators are, however, looking into allegations of ballot fraud in Rensselaer County, a case that has already prompted a guilty plea and resignation from a Troy City Council member and the recent indictment of county Board of Elections Commissioner Jason Schofield, who like McLaughlin has pleaded not guilty.
Stefanik said the FBI was “not doing their job when it comes to really important issues like the Schoharie limousine crash.” The congresswoman has in recent months joined those calling on the agency to turn over materials related to its use of Shahed Hussain, the owner of the limousine company whose vehicle resulted in 20 fatali-

Trunk or Treat at Gilead Lutheran Church Sunday, October 30, 2022
Halloween is actually Monday, October 31, 2022 but we made the decision to celebrate it a day early. It gives our “truckers” more time to get ready for our visitors. That is a good point for us but it also frees up time for our little friends to go out again on Monday for more loot. Our trunks open at 3:00 PM and will close at 5:00 PM. If you enjoy watching the little one dress up but don’t have children of your own to take around, please feel free to come and hand out candy and goodies with us. Just to let you know, we have had close to 200 little visitors each year.
In 2021 we had some of our canine friends stop by, some in costume and other just stop by for a pat on the head.
We will be found in the parking lot behind Gilead Lutheran Church. You can’t miss us because Gilead is located at the intersection of Routes 7 & 278 in Center Brunswick.

Caroline Antolick
SCHOLAR ATHLETE •
This week’s Scholar Athlete of the Week is Caroline Antolick. Carly is a captain on the Varsity swim team, where she prefers the breaststroke and the butterfly.
Carly’s mother was a swimmer at the collegiate level, and got Carly in the water when she was five years old. Carly has been swimming ever since, and swims with the Starfish Swim Club outside of the school season. Carly’s favorite part about swimming is the friends she has made in the sport. “I’ve met a lot of wonderful people that I otherwise would not have and I consider myself really lucky.” Carly feels particularly proud of the team whenever a member qualifies for the sectional championships.
“Every time someone has qualified, every single member of our team has cheered and rushed to the end of their lane to give them a hug or a high five, which I think truly reflects the spirit and camaraderie of this team.” Carly noted that swimming has a large time commitment attached: the school team practices for two and a half hours six days a week.
Carly was instrumental in forming a scholastic team for Averill Park. In her freshman year of high school, Carly held frequent meetings with the athletic director to get Averill Park a swim team. The result was the merger between Troy and AP, which became the TAP swim team in Carly’s sophomore year. Carly’s greatest athletic achievement is breaking her team’s record in the 100-yard breaststroke. The previous record had stood since 2000, until Carly swam a 1:11.09, breaking it by over a second. Last year, Carly began to deal with severe burnout after swimming for so long. She took some time off and returned when she felt prepared to do so, and is now working towards her goal of qualifying for the state championships meet in the 100-yard breaststroke.
While Carly succeeds in the pool, she also excels academically. Carly has a 97.94 GPA while taking difficult courses this year, including Advanced Placement Biology, AP Calculus BC, AP Government and Politics, AP Language and Composition, and French 5. Carly is the vice president of Averill Park’s branch of the National Honor Society, founded a volunteer organization called Brighten A Day Averill Park, and is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She is also a volunteer peer tutor and swim coach.
Carly is proud of her scores from her AP tests last year; she studied hard and feels that it has paid off. To balance school and sports, Carly uses her study hall time as effectively as she can, and tries to limit distractions to help her study better.
Carly’s teammates and her family inspire her to do well in her sport and push Carly out of her comfort zone. Carly’s teammates help her excel in her sport by getting her to work hard during practice and cheering Carly on at meets. Carly would advise a younger athlete to, “find a good group of friends within your team who will push you to achieve your dreams.” Next year, Carly plans on

Debra Young was the first woman elected County Court Judge, and since her election in 2012 has ensured justice and fairness. As judge, she has more experience in County Court than any other candidate this year.
Judge Young has presided over some of the biggest area trials, handling over 20,000 criminal court appearances, 1500 felony cases and 50 criminal trials. That experience led to Judge Young being trusted to oversee criminal court operations in seven upstate counties.
She began her career as a medical researcher and helped litigate the landmark tobacco settlement. Judge Young relied on that experience to secure $800,000 in grant money to fight the opioid epidemic. She has supported innovation to improve efficiency and ensure justice.

My friend Phil is so good with coupons the store often has to give him credit to buy something else. We saw one of his countings where in one year he had redeemed over $400 in coupons. Since COVID stores have moved to providing digital coupons through apps which actually can be used more than once. Phil says that some supermarkets have a display of vegan products in the produce department. Ibotta and Fetch are apps through which you can get rebates. Stock up when prices are low.
The best ways to enjoy couponing is to enjoy cooking. If you have suggestions about a product, contact the company. They welcome feedback.
Note: Starbucks now offers plant based nuggets.

Inflation
Regarding “Inflation” why do journalists, politicians and financial analysts rarely tell the truth that “inflation” is an increase in the supply of money and credit created by government? It is this expansion that causes rising prices.
According to the Federal Reserve, the M1 money supply (money in circulation plus checking accounts) increased from $3.99 trillion in January 2020 to $20.58 trillion in January 2022. Nearly all resulted from the federal government printing and spending dollars. A fraction came from people exiting M2 (savings accounts, time deposits) and various investments to cope with inflated prices.
Prior to 1933 our currency was backed by gold and redeemable in gold, thus preventing the government from over printing dollars. Thereafter, the U.S. Treasury and the privately-owned Federal Reserve Bank began issuing completely un-backed “fiat” dollars, thereby devaluing every existing dollar.
Flooding the nation with fiat dollars explains why prices are skyrocketing and our national debt increased from $17.2 trillion to $31.1 trillion since January 2020. At www.USdebtClock.org you can watch the national debt (and NYS debt) increase faster than you can read the numbers.
Federal budget deficits total $1 trillion annually, all added to the national debt. Annual interest on the national debt totals $446 billion, the fourth largest budget item.
The solution to this dead hand of government is to stop printing fiat dollars, return to the gold standard, audit the Fed, and slash spending, taxes, regulations, and debt to unleash the free market and grow us out of this suicidal path to destruction.

A Friendship
Let me tell you about a friendship that started when president Richard Nixon was in office and I was 12 years old. I visited the Sycaway Bike Shop frequently and was always impressed with the rows of bicycles for sale and repair. In its day it was the largest retailer of sales and services of bicycles in the capital district that Dennis Bailey had inherited from his dad Walter. Also at that time Dennis was branching out to start repairing lawn mowers, small engines & snow blowers and had a good amount of staff both part time and full to handle the flow of sales & repairs. On one of my visits there I began to show him my mechanical ability and soon would become proficient in the repair and assembly of bicycles under Dennis’s guidance.
For many years we worked nights and Saturdays and I was always amazed by the volume of many happy customers we served. Then Ronald Reagan took office and I was married & I had a full time job but still worked for Dennis for many more years part time. By the Mid 90’s and the advent of department stores taking a bigger share of bicycles sales Sycaway Bike still remained strong in bicycle repair and an even larger reliance on lawn mowers, small engines & snow blowers.
By the time George W. Bush took office near 2004, I was bringing my second daughter through Brunswick Girls Softball at their T Ball program with me as their manager and asked Dennis if would sponsor us for that team that year and he gladly said yes. Dennis is always a giving man. At that time I had only been with the Brunswick girls softball league as a coach since 1997. Also in 2004 the sponsors were to receive a plaque acknowledging their dedication to the program. Needless to say that never happened. Many more years passed and that same T-baller I brought into the program in 2004 became the major league division winning pitcher for 2014 & 2015 and I was Treasurer in those final years of being in the league. By 2016 Dennis had sold off most of the new bikes & supplies and stopped performing repairs recommending other local repair shops but continued with small engine repair. Currently I am 60 and Dennis in his
70’s is still working on small engine repairs but because of health concerns cannot work on riding mowers.
So in September I decided to honor Mr. Bailey by making him a plaque that was long overdue, It reads: “Dedicated to Dennis Bailey of Sycaway Bicycle for sponsorship to Brunswick Girls Softball 2004”. The dedication came complete with my daughters tee shirt bearing Sycaway Bike on Front and number 9 on back. We both have seen a lot of changes over the years but
We Really Know Nothing About State Judicial Candidates
We hear about their time in the Rotary Club, or as Girl Scout Leaders. Perhaps we hear about drug diversion or youthful offender programs in the courts. The candidates tell us about their husbands, wives, and kids. We’re told generically about how “experienced and fair” they are…
But we’re kept from knowing whether the judges really stand up for the rights of New Yorkers. This is especially true for courts with jurisdiction over criminal matters. Many New York judges appear to bend over backward in protecting the rights of those on trial – often well beyond what constitutional standards require. Consequently, the collateral rights of innocent crime victims are effectively pushed aside.
Come election time, we’d like to know if a judge - while being fair and impartial - is still tough on crime, and on the defendants who are on trial. Anyone who thinks judges do not and cannot influence the outcome of a trial because of inherent bias is very naïve.
There are a number of reasons why New York exemplifies the highest standard in the nation, in terms of being soft on crime and soft on criminals. The laws and our liberal legislators, who ensure criminals are viewed as societal victims instead of perpetrators, are certainly at the forefront. But judges at the trial-level also have a tremendous effect on criminal trials, by way of their influence on a jury, decisions on trial motions, evidence admission and testimony, and many other procedural and substantive factors.
Judicial candidates in the election season appear to be constrained by the courts from saying anything substantive about their views and their record, via regulations like the Campaign Ethics Handbook. In theory, this promotes the integrity and impartiality of the judges. In practice, however, it’s a convenient way to hide a candidate‘s performance and judicial philosophy - attributes that should be more important to voters than the wide smiles on campaign posters.

Vote for the Congressman You Deserve
In November, voters here in Rensselaer County have the opportunity to make history by electing Matt Castelli to replace Elise Stefanik in the 21st Congressional District. The race is very, very close and the election will depend on you deciding what you deserve from your representative in Congress.
If you think you deserve a congressman who will spend his time in your district and not at Mar-a-Lago, VOTE FOR MATT CASTELLI.
If you think you deserve a congressman who tells you the truth about the 2020 election, VOTE FOR MATT CASTELLI.
If you think you deserve a congressman who will not allow a mob attack on our national capital, VOTE FOR MATT CASTELLI.
If you think you deserve a congressman whose campaign is funded by voters in our district and not by unidentified corporate money, VOTE FOR MATT CASTELLI.
If you think you deserve a congressman who can produce more for our district than the renaming of a post office, VOTE FOR MATT CASTELLI.
But, most important, if you think you deserve a congressman who will work to promote decency and compromise and progress and not extremism, conflict and violence, VOTE FOR MATT CASTELLI. Matt is a former CIA employee who has spent months meeting the people of the21st Congressional District. He created the Moderate Party, to show his independence.
Elise has allied herself with the extreme politics of our former president and continues to promote his lies, his greed and his disrespect for our Constitution.
What you deserve?

Rensselaer Plateau Alliance members had discussed in the past that the swamp, which is the
headwaters of a stream that flows into the environmental group’s Albert Family Forest in neighboring Nassau, should be renamed.
“It’s derogatory,” Fred McCagg, alliance vice president and Nassau town highway superintendent, said Friday.
McCagg said he was un-
aware of the change to the name Black Swamp. The swamp is small, he said, but its waters make their way downstream eventually reaching the Kinderhook Creek and then the Hudson River.
The swamp is located in what was originally the homelands of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians, now headquartered in Wisconsin. The Mohicans’ have worked in Massachusetts to rename place names containing the word and to re-establish a presence in eastern New York.
STEFANIK
CONTINUED FROM 1 ties in the 2018 crash, as a confidential informant in counter-terrorism cases.
The congresswoman has been especially critical of the FBI in the months since agents executed a search warrant at MarA-Lago, the Florida home and resort owned by former President Donald J. Trump.
She said it infuriates Democrats to see McLaughlin’s success in cutting taxes and governing the county. McLaughlin proposed his fifth straight county budget with a county property tax cut last week.
“I fully support her and she supports me,” McLaughlin said..
Asked if she would debate her Democratic opponent, Matt Castelli, Stefanik said her campaign is working with “community groups” to schedule a debate.
Castelli has accused the incumbent of ducking debate invitations from numerous media organizations in the district — including Mountain Lake PBS, WWNY in Water-
town, WTEN in Albany and WPTZ in Plattsburgh.
A spokewoman for his campaign said they have not heard from any community groups about holding a debate.
Stefanik, who last year won the No. 3 position in the House GOP leadership following the ouster of Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, said her conference plans to investigate the COVID-19 deaths of elderly residents in New York as well as Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Jersey — other states with Democratic governors — if they retake the majority next month.
‘We will not hesitate to follow the facts wherever they lead and really uncover the important data, the decision-making process and the absolute corruption that the numbers were withheld at Gov. Cuomo’s demand so that he could negotiate a higher book deal, a multi-million-dollar book deal,” Stefanik said, referring to the former governor’s book “American Crisis,” which earned him an advance of more than $5 million.
“Meanwhile over 15,000 seniors lost their lives, and their loved ones are still mourning those losses,” Stefanik said.
