TROY — The election for a 10-year term on the Rensselaer County Court bench pits incumbent Judge Debra Young against North Greenbush Town Justice George Burke in the race to preside in the county’s criminal courts. Young, 54, of Schodack and Burke, 56, of North Greenbush, each assert they have the judicial temperamental needed to balance the demands of handling what can be high-profile trials that demand respecting victims, while balancing the rights of the accused with the prosecution of a case.
Both candidates — Burke appears on the Democratic and Working Families lines while Young is on the Republican and Conservative lines — have dealt with the impact of bail reform in their respective courts. They are constrained by judicial guidelines from what they can say while campaigning.
“It does make my job more difficult on a daily basis,” said Young, who sees the legislation as curtailing the ability to help defendants take advantage of drug court to leave drug abuse behind.
Young has presided over high-profile murder trials, oversees the county’s drug court and has secured $800,000 in federal funding to deal with the impact of opioid use. “I love drug
court,” Young said. “It really allows you to see people change.”
Burke said judges have to follow the bail reform law even though it may mean judges have lost the discretion they had.
“We’re judges. We’re not legislators. Our job is not to legislate. We have to apply the law as its drafted without bias,” Burke said.
Burke is finishing his seventh year on the North Greenbush bench in a town that has seen population and economic expansion. Young is completing her 10-year term as county judge, previously having served as a Schodack town councilwoman.
During her tenure on the county bench, Young has become the supervising judge for criminal courts in the seven counties that are in the Third Judicial District and is the past president of the New York State Association of County Court Judges. Young presided over the last criminal court trial in the state before the pandemic shut down the court system. Young was the first judge to use technology for recent criminal trials as she says on her campaign web site.

SCHODACK — The fledgling Amazon Labor Union has filed objections over an Oct. 19 unionization vote that it lost by a two-to-one margin, contending the company unfairly pressured employees to vote “no.”
“The employer basically tried to destroy our election process,” said Seth Goldstein, one of the union’s lawyers involved in filing objections with the National Labor Relations Board, the federal agency that oversaw the vote.
During that vote, Amazon employees at the facility’s ALB1 fulfillment center, or warehouse
in Schodack, voted 406-206 against joining the Amazon Labor Union. The union was formed earlier this year when workers at an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island voted to unionize. That, so far, is the only Amazon facility to date where workers have approved a union.
A total of 949 people were eligible to vote in Schodack. Following the vote, union leaders, including Heather Goodall, who led the effort in Schodack, complained that the company had unfairly pressured employees against voting for the union through mandatory meetings, as
years is in private practice with offices in Malta. He has appeared as an attorney in village, town, county and state courts during his 30 years in practice. Burke has filled in as an acting judge in Rensselaer City Court, East Greenbush Town Court and Ghent Town Court.
Young is a graduate of Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland with a bachelor’s degree and Albany Law School. She is married and has three children. Burke is a graduate of Alfred University and the University of Toledo College of Law. He is married and has two children.
Early voting runs through Sunday, Nov. 6. Election Day is Nov. 8.
well as retaliating against known union activists.
“They did everything they could to harm our rights,” Goldstein said on Thursday.
Amazon spokesman Paul Flaningan disagreed. “These objections and allegations are without merit and we are confident that through this process the majority of our employees’ voices will continue to be heard,” he said.
Among the specific allegations filed by the union: Amazon forced workers to meet with “union avoidance consultants,” who suggested they would get fewer benefits if they unionized.
“The mandatory nature of these meetings make them inherently coercive, preventing these employees from exercising their free choice in the election,” according to the objection.
The union also alleged the com-
pany kept one of their election observers late at work during the voting, and that they kept track of workers who had stopped by a table outside the building where union supporters had leaflets available.
They also claim the company kept track of who had accepted or rejected “Vote No” t-shirts that Amazon was giving to its workers.
Goldstein said that, through their objection, the union wasn’t necessarily seeking another vote.
“That would be like asking for a re-vote in Putin’s Russia,” he said.
Instead, union officials want the NLRB to go to federal court and seek recognition for the union in Schodack. He said the federal agency could do that, although such moves are rare.
Regardless of the vote, the union drive appears to have made some changes.
Goodall had earlier noted that before the vote, the company gave out $1-an-hour raises. That would bring starting pay to almost $17 an hour.

Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack
I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This report, published every month since I took office in 2016, is an example of my commitment to keeping Schodack residents informed about town government news and community events.
All Town Board meetings can be viewed live or later at https://townhallstreams.com/ towns/schodack.
During October, the Town Board appointed Thomas Finn and Carrie Kane as Police Sergeants.
The Town Board also honored Peter Schweigert upon his retirement after more than 40 years of dedicated service as Fire Investigator with the Town of Schodack. Peter continues to serve our town as a Life Member of the East Schodack Fire Company and as a member of the Board of Assessment Review.
In addition to our regularly scheduled Town Board meetings in October, we held a series of budget meetings to review and discuss the 2023 Preliminary Budget for the Town of Schodack.
Our department heads did an excellent job of outlining and itemizing recommended expenditures and appropriations for the upcoming year. We look forward to adopting a town budget that continues our commitment to providing high-quality services to our residents while also being fiscally responsible.

Tracey Rex, Schodack Town Board Member Constituent Report for October from Schodack Supervisor Charles Peter
Over the past two months, Town Department heads and my staff have been working to prepare and assemble the initial draft of our 2023 budget for the Town. This year presented challenges, and next year looks likely to be just as volatile. However, due to strong and resilient financial planning, Schodack has weathered these challenges remarkably well.
Despite unforeseen expenses relating to inflation, we were still able to purchase a new mini excavator, pave more miles of road than initially planned, take part in a series of haz-
impressive background: a Combat Medic and Army Aviator (Huey, Cobra, Blackhawk, and Lakota). He was the state instructor pilot, teaching everyone in the military that flies in New York. Now that he is retired, he is the Regional Director of LifeNet.
Grafton’s Everett Wagar Senior Center event will be held on Thurs, Nov 10th with a noon meal followed by guest Speaker, Carrie Farley, President of the Albany Chapter of the American Gold Star Mothers. Carrie is the proud mother of SSG Derek J. Farley,
who was killed while serving his country. American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization of America mothers who lost their sons or daughters in service of the United States Armed Forces. Carrie will talk about the volunteer work the organization does to support our Veterans.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend. Hoosick 518-686-7561 or Grafton 518-279-3413. Please come dressed in red, white and blue to show our appreciation for those who have served our country. Lunch

ardous waste clean-up days, expand the “Music in The Park” concert series, host our first ever Easter Egg hunt for our families, and we’ve purchased all the necessary equipment to start another new tradition next year with our first ever “Movie in The Park” nights. All of this was in addition to what was originally budgeted for 2022 and utilized previous cost savings and reallocation of funds, and we are still on track to end the year with a surplus.
These achievements would not have been possible without the hard work and support of my fellow Town Board members, the financial oversight and assistance of our comptroller Paul Harter and his assistant Laura Palmer, my assistant Dawne Kelly, and each of the department heads who continually work to ensure they best utilize the resources provided to them.
Work on the budget is not yet complete, and I do not have final rates to share with you currently. I feel confident however in saying that at a time when our residents are dealing with rising living costs and supply issues, we are finding ways to avoid adding additional burdens to our taxpayers. The 2023 budget will fund expanded recreational opportunities at the park, increases our road program, and provides resources to better engage with our residents to find out what services they use, what they want to see expanded, and what we may offer them in the future. I look forward to sharing the final version with you all in the coming weeks.

SCHOLAR ATHLETE
week’s Scholar Athlete of the Week is David Mooradian.
David is a captain of the Varsity golf team. Much of David’s family plays golf, so David was introduced to the sport when he was about eight years old. He quickly fell in love with golf, and has been playing ever since. To prepare for his season, David practices as much as he can over the summer. David noted that golf requires a lot of practice to improve, and a commitment to do your best. David’s favorite part about his sport is the internal struggle it brings. David commented that golf is a very challenging game, and that athletes can always improve no matter what their skill level is.
David also said that for him, the most difficult part about golfing is the patience necessary to be a competitive golfer. David noted that, “No round is ever perfect and you have to be able to handle the ebbs and flows of a round.” Entering high school, David’s two goals for golf were to qualify for the state team and perform well at sectionals as a team. In his freshman year, David’s score average was a 41. However, in his sophomore year David’s score increased to a 43, a worse score in golf. David managed to lower his score down to a 39 in his junior year, and qualified for the state tournament. In his senior year, David led Averill Park’s team to a sectional victory for the first time in Averill Park history. David is proud of both of these accomplishments.
In addition to his athletic success, David excels academically. David has a 3.9 GPA while taking a difficult course load, including Advanced Placement Government and Politics and AP Language and Composition. David is also a member of the National Honor Society, and serves as the class president for the class of 2023. To balance school and sports, David tries to effectively use any free time that he has. Some nights in the season can run late, so it is important for David to complete schoolwork when he can and maintain a healthy sleep schedule.
David’s role model in golf is Phil Mickelson. David respects him being “aggressive and never out of a hole no matter where he hits his tee shot”, and David strives to copy that mindset. Coach Conroy and David’s father both push him to excel in his sport, and David would advise a younger athlete to, “stay patient, it is a very difficult and frustrating game.” Next year David hopes to attend a college where he can play golf all year, but does not feel it is necessary to play for a team. Playing golf in college is very competitive, especially in southern states where David hopes to go to college. We wish David the best as he finishes his senior year and prepares for college.

How to Care for Winter Birds that Visit Your Yard
waxwings, evening grosbeaks, and cardinals are just some of the birds one may find while gazing outside on a chilly winter’s day. Birding in the winter can be a rewarding hobby because, despite the chilly conditions, birds tend to be easy to find in bare trees. Furthermore, the colder temperatures may keep many people inside, meaning neighborhoods, trails and parks can be very quiet, making it easier for those who brave the cold to see birds.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds indicates that winter is a difficult time of year for birds due to the weather and the scarcity of food. Furthermore, birds must consume a lot of food in a short amount of time to have the energy and body warmth to survive each day. Even birds that store food in caches or have developed special scavenging strategies to find as much food as possible can benefit from a little wintertime help. Penn State Extension suggests providing a variety of foods to attract the greatest number of species. Small, black-oil sunflower seeds are preferred by many smaller species of bird and have a high oil content that is nutritionally important for birds. Other sunflower seeds will be appropriate for blue jays and cardinals. Some other popular foods include white proso millet, thistle seed, niger seed, and peanuts.
Consult a wild bird store, which likely sells a birdseed mix that enables you to place a variety of seed into one feeder. In addition to seed, suet, which is made from high-quality animal fat, is crucial for birds in the winter. Families can get crafty by spreading peanut butter onto pine cones and sprinkling seed on top. Hang the pine cones tied to pieces of string from tree branches for homemade feeders.
Birds likely need a little help surviving the winter, when conditions can be bleak. Offering food and observing backyard visitors can be a great way to unwind on winter afternoons.

Phil Eddy, a vegan for 19 years, reports that inflation has not invaded plant based products as much as animal products. He also reports that mushroom based meats are appearing in stores.
VegNews quotes Future Market Insights that sales of plant based products are anticipated to quadruple to $1,000,000. His keen shopping sense notes that plant based milk products have eclipsed the space of dairy products. At Shoprite if you spend $400, you can get a free plant based turkey.
Glendora hopes that Honest Weight Co-op will have vegan pumpkin pies again this Thanksgiving.
Currently Honest Weight has Tofurkey roasts on sale.

WGU Announces Scholarships for NYS Teachers
The Teachers College at nonprofit Western Governors University’s (WGU) School of Education will mark American Education Week (Nov. 14-19, 2022) by announcing its WGU Loves Teachers and Become a Teacher scholarship programs for current and future education professionals who wish to pursue bachelor’s or master’s degree programs in the Teachers College.
Each WGU Loves Teachers and Become a Teacher scholarship is valued up to $4,000 and designed to help current teachers improve their skill set in the classroom or move into administration, and support future teachers in obtaining the required credentials to start a rewarding career as an educator.
As the 2022-23 school year began, school districts across New York state reported significantly more unfilled teaching jobs than usual. The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) union estimates that 180,000 teachers will need to be hired in New York over the next 10 years. Recruiting for the state’s teacher pipeline is crucial with NYSUT also projecting 87,000 retirements within five years.
WGU is doing its part to address this growing

Sand Lake Ambulance
Finishing Up It’s 2022 Fund Drive
Sand Lake Ambulance (SLA), is finishing up its 2022 Annual Fund Drive in the Town of Sand Lake. Mailers should have arrived. We apologize for the timing, the slips were not supposed to coincide
with tax bills. SLA is close to reaching its ambitious goal of $37,000 but it needs your help to go over the top.
It has certainly been a challenging time but we are still here although things like Covid have made it difficult to stay open. Inflation is tough on everyone and that includes us. As you can imagine filling an Ambulance with gas is getting brutal and the prices on all our other equipment and maintenance fees are skyrocketing as well.
Remember, it is your generous support, which is greatly appreciated, that goes a long way toward keeping this service available in the town.
Book Nook at Transfiguration Parish is Open

Open Letter to Congresswoman Elise Stefanik
Dear Congresswoman Stefanik: I feel safe in the United States because all of our citizens have rights that are protected by our laws and our government leaders cannot override these laws.
In contrast, when I visit China – which I have about 20 times in my life - I am always just a little uneasy because I know that if a member of the government wants to, they can lock me up and hold me for as long as they want. Thus, I am on my best behavior, being careful to NEVER say anything that might be construed as critical of the Communist Party. I know that my rights are far more limited there than in the U.S. because China is completely controlled by the Communist Party; in fact, it is controlled by a few powerful members of that party. It’s been this way since the Communists took over in 1949.
Historically in the US, when people in power put their own selfish interests ahead of our laws, they are brought to justice by others in power. When I was young, President Nixon tested this by trying to use his office of the Presidency to aid others in his political party who had broken various laws in order to keep him in power. But because other leaders held our “rule of law” as sacred, they wouldn’t let this happen. Although many of them wanted Nixon to stay in office for 4 more years, they

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service
The clergy of Hope Methodist Church, Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church, Saint John’s Episcopal Church, and Temple Beth El invite you to an interfaith service on Sunday evening, November 20th at 6pm.
Prayers of gratitude are found in every religious tradition, and we invite you to bring your prayers this evening as well as canned goods for a local food pantry.
This interfaith gathering, resumed for the first time since the pandemic began, will include readings from sacred scripture, prayers, and sacred music on the theme of Thanksgiving. Father Thomas
knew that our “rule of law” was more important than one man. And so, they voted to impeach him and forced him to resign. While it was a painful time in US history, it clearly demonstrated the difference between a true democracy like the US, and an authoritative regime like China (or Russia). Democracy survived a big threat during the Nixon administration due to the courage of our leaders to enforce and obey our laws even though it harmed their political party.
In 2020, our democracy faced a similar test when President Trump continued to challenge the results of the presidential election. He and his team filed 62 lawsuits and lost all but one. He pressured officials and leaders involved in the election process to keep him in office, as Nixon had done and went on to encourage a violent attack to take over the US Capitol, resulting in hundreds of arrests and convictions, many injuries, and even the deaths of three police officers. Like when Nixon failed to break the law to extend his presidency, Trump was only thwarted because many of those around him valued the “rule of law” higher than their desire to have him remain as President.
I can still feel safe in the U.S. because of these people that continue to put the “rule of law” ahead of the interests of one man or one party. If not for their courage and dedication, our country would have changed from

Collection
The East Schodack Fire Company on Route 150 in East Schodack will be assisting the 518 Pajamas! Program this year by having a dropbox to collect new boys’ and girls’ pajamas (any size).
This program started six years ago to help the Unity House of Troy and
a democracy (where the citizens elect our leaders and all must obey our laws) to an authoritarian regime, where a single party controls everything and is largely unchecked. And as we have seen in China and in Russia, once that ruling party gains that power citizens are no longer free to speak out with opposing views and nothing can change.
While I passionately agree with your positions on several issues (lower taxes, control immigration), I feel that the “rule of law” is more important than any of these issues. Because you continue to publicly support President Trump and defend his baseless claim of election fraud, you are supporting our move to a one-party system like China. Trump’s closest advisors have provided sworn testimony of his actions – that he knew he had lost the election and that he planned to still continue as the leader of the United States, defying the actual choice of our citizens and breaking laws in the process.
You have mentioned many times that you are in office to serve your constituents. I like that very much and hope that it is your true primary motivation. Please put the interests of your constituents ahead of the interests of your party. Find the courage to publicly deny those baseless claims of election fraud, so that you are truly putting the interests of your constituents first. Please stop supporting Trump and put democracy first.

Look closely and you will see Greek Revivals throughout the Capital Region countryside. The style was an American favorite from about 1830 to the 1850s, coincidentally a period of rapid growth in the U.S. — New York in particular.
Even after they have been altered, Greek Revivals are easy to spot: a wide band of trim beneath the cornice of the main roof, elaborate door surrounds and columns of some type.
This week’s house is a farmhouse variation with a long wing. It has 2,724 square feet of living space, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and sits on 5.7 lush acres. Wideplank wood flooring, updated kitchen and bathrooms, simple but elegant finishings.

The round up and relocation of 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry in the wake of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor is one of the darkest blemishes on the Roosevelt record. Many Americans saw danger in every corner. This presentation explores the intent and consequences of Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066.

Airport clears a hurdle for $172M from county
By STEVE HUGHES
ALBANY — An Albany County Legislature committee approved a $172 million amendment to Albany International Airport’s capital plan.
The five-year, $352 million plan lays out a number of changes, include a $100 million terminal expansion and the potential addition of two new gates. The full legislature will vote on the plan at its November meeting.
The money sources for the capital improvements includes $138 million in federal funding and $74 million in state funding, according to the capital plan. That includes a $60 million state grant announced in September.
At a meeting with the legislature’s mass transit committee, Airport Authority CEO Phil Calderone said some of the planned changes were spurred on by the coronavirus pandemic. The security line would often back up on heavy travel days and requirements for social distancing made it even worse, so that the line would sometimes stretch down to the ticketing area.
“What the pandemic did was exacerbate some of the day-today issues we’d been dealing with,” he said.
The plan calls for replacement of the pedestrian bridge with an expanded terminal that connects the parking lot to the airport terminal.
Other projects include the potential addition of two boarding gates and reconstruction of the terminal apron.
Calderone told the committee the airport is also continuing its efforts to become carbon neutral by 2035. The airport is working with researchers at RPI as well as Plug Power as it explores ways to improve the airport, he said.

Libraries to get makeovers
Voorheesville Public among recipients of $1.8 million state funding for improvements
By MELISSA MANNO
The Voorheesville Public Library has joined a longer list of Capital Region libraries set to receive a makeover after securing a trove of state funding.
Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy announced Wednesday that the library, located at 51 School Road, has received $229,292 in state aid, which will be used to construct a new entryway, accessible circulation desk and children’s play feature. The circulation area, where patrons can check out and return books, will also be fully renovated.
“We’re really excited to have the opportunity to upgrade our building, and the improvements that we’re working on will improve the safety of the building and also make it more welcoming for staff and visitors,” said library Director Sarah Clark.
Construction is set to begin early next year, but Clark said the library will still operate as normal, adding that she and the staff are thankful for Fahy’s dedication to securing the funds which are “so needed not only by Voorheesville but all public libraries in the state.”
The Albany Public Library’s Washington Avenue branch will also undergo a facelift, with the allocation of $235,985 in state funding to be used primarily to replace

the facility’s air conditioning system.
“Libraries are the heart of so many of our communities here in the Capital Region,” Fahy said in a statement.
“In the 21st century, libraries are now where you can access the internet, find a job and connect with your community in a myriad of ways. Ensuring that our public libraries in our rural, suburban and urban areas have upto-date infrastructure and modern facilities is critical to ensuring they can fulfill their missions in our communities.”
The financial aid comes from the $34 million recently awarded by the State Education Department to 223 public libraries statewide to support renovation efforts.
Over $1.8 million of total funding has been granted to the Capital Region.
Several libraries in the Mohawk Valley system have been allocated funding as well. The largest grant is for the Amsterdam Free Library, which received $648,599 for a project that will replace sewer lines and plumbing, reconstruct the interior, restore windows and install a new foundation. Five Schenectady County Public Libraries — in Schenectady, Delanson, Niskayuna and Scotia — have also received aid, largely to replace inefficient fluorescent lighting fixtures and air conditioning systems.

A recent statewide survey from the Department of Education documented library construction and renovation needs totaling more than $1.5 billion over the next five years. More than half of the state’s over 1,000 library buildings are more than 60 years old — and due to their age, many don’t offer accessibility for disabled patrons.
Improving disability access is a focus of Menands Public Library, where its $150,000 state grant will be used to alter the building’s infrastructure and parking lot to create a ramp and other accommodations for those with physical disabilities.
The project at the Troy Public Library, powered by $176,206 in state funding, will restore 20 feet of the northwest parapet wall above the steel bracket of the historic Hart Memorial Building at 100 Second St.
The Schuylerville Public Library will use its allotted $119,850 to construct an outdoor pavilion for public programming and storage, while the town of Ballston Community Library will direct its $39,191 to revamping its children’s room to improve the patron experience.
Other awardees include Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls, Rockwell Falls Public Library in Luzerne, Argyle Free Library, Upper Hudson Library System in Albany, Grafton Community Library and the Arvilla. E. Diver Memorial Library in Schaghticoke.
