Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack SCHODACK - I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This report, published every month since I took office in 2016, is an example of my commitment to keeping Schodack residents informed about town government news and community events. In addition to our regularly scheduled Town Board meeting in October, we held a series of budget meetings to review and discuss the 2022 Preliminary Budget for the Town of Schodack. Our department heads did an excellent job of outlining and itemizing their recommended expenditures and appropriations for the upcoming year. We look forward to adopting another town budget that continues our commitment to providing high-quality services to

our residents, while also being fiscally responsible. Congratulations to Andy Koch who was honored by the Town Board upon his retirement after 22 years of dedicated service to the Schodack Highway Department. Andy demonstrated his commitment to the town by always being responsive to emergency call-backs due to extreme weather conditions or water breaks. Enjoy your retirement, Andy! Thank you to everyone who so generously supported the recent Food Drive that Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly and I held at The Spinney at Pond View to benefit The Anchor Food Pantry. The event was a huge success as we collected a large volume of canned goods, pasta, toiletries, and food mixes that will help our local families during times of need. It was great to see so many people and families attend the “Let’s Light GM

Ms. Muth was elected to the Board of Education in May 2019. “On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Deanna for her service to our school community and volunteer work as a board member,” said Board of Education President Michael Buono. “We are grateful for her dedication and the giving of her time as a representative of the community to help guide the district during these difficult times.” The Board of Education is seeking volunteers interested in filling Ms. Muth’s position. The person who is selected by the Board will serve until the next regular election on May 17, 2022. Interested volunteers should submit a letter of interest and resume to the District Clerk’s office at East Greenbush Central School District, 29 Englewood Ave., East

High PFOA levels found in 3 wells Rensselaer County officials suspect multiple sources By KENNETH C. CROWE II

Three more residential wells have tested above the state level for PFOA/PFOS in the early results of the third round of testing and there may be multiple sources of contamination, Rensselaer County officials said last Thursday. “The county continues to test residences and properties on a voluntary basis and is providing this information as quickly as possible to the public. We can report that testing has yet to reveal a source for the contamination, and we are in fact reviewing whether there are multiple sources involved in the Poestenkill situation,” county Public Health Director Mary Fran Wachunas said.

“We continue to test to determine a source and to get additional answers for residents,” added Wachunas. The newest results bring to seven the number of residences exceeding the state level of 10 parts per trillion for PFOA/PFOS. The positive results were between 10 ppt and 20 ppt. The county has test results from 27 sites and only tests wells where the property owners volunteer to take part. The county is waiting for the test results from the remaining 24 samples taken during the third round, which was conducted north and east of the Algonquin Middle School. Any residence where a well tests above the state contami-

nation limit is placed on bottled water until a filtration system is installed. The county is testing for PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid). PFOS has been used in stain-resistant fabrics, firefighting foams, food packaging and other processes. PFOAs have been a serious issue in Rensselaer County since 2014 when municipal water supplies and private wells were found to have been contaminated by the substances that could be traced to large manufacturing facilities in Hoosick, Hoosick Falls and Peters-burgh. The Poestenkill results have been far below the levels recorded in the northeast-

ern section of the county. The issue arose in Poestenkill after the Averill Park Central School District discovered the wells at Algonquin Middle School were contaminated after the district conducted state required testing in January. The county Health Department has been working with the town, the state Department of Health and the state Department of Environmental Conservation. “Residents should know the county continues to work cooperatively with the state and the town to provide an effective response to this issue. Residents can call our office at 518-270-2632 if they have additional questions,” Wachunas said.

Early voting numbers top 2019’s But totals are down from 2020 presidential contest By KENNETH C. CROWE II

Early voting wrapped up Sunday for the 2021 general election, with turnout down dramatically from the 2020 presidential election but up from 2019 when early voting debuted in the state, according to voting tallies released Monday by the New York and local county Boards of Elections. The Capital Region’s 2021 elections don’t have the emotional and political fervor that brought out 2,509,997 voters statewide to cast ballots in the 2020 presidential contest between Joseph Biden and Donald Trump. But 2021 early voting turnout is 60 percent higher statewide at 411,172

than it was in 2019 when 256,251 voters cast early ballots, according to numbers released Monday. “Early voting is starting to become popular,” said Schenectady County Republican Elections Commissioner Darlene Harris. Schenectady County Democratic Elections Commissioner Ann Hild also said “that early voting is continuing to increase in popularity” and that voters at the polls during the Oct. 22 through Oct. 31 early voting period recounted how they were able to take advantage of it to easily get to the polls instead of going through delays on Election Day. In the Capital Region, Albany County, the most populous county, saw 79 percent more early voters this year than two years ago with 9,535 Please see VOTING 6 ballots cast. In the other counties,

Gates of Heaven believes in challenge Synagogue launches online Dare to Do a Mitzvah as a way to do good deeds in world ByLINE: LYNDA EDWARDS

Think of it as an antidote to "devious licks," the stupid viral online dare that challenges its sheep-like followers to vandalize school toilets. Schenectady's Gates of Heaven launched its warm-hearted polar opposite. Gates of Heaven has launched Dare to Do a Mitzvah, an online challenge to repair the world in ways ranging from prosaic but necessary to creative and epic. Mitzvah's literal translation is "commandment" but Gates of Heaven uses it as most people do, to refer to a "good deed." The synagogue normally has a Mitzvah Day but in these nerve-shredding times, more was needed. November was declared "Mitzvah Month." "The world needs us more than ever, and while most of our opportunities to give back will take place virtually or from a social distance, our commitment to our local community through volunteerism and tzedakah (charitable generosity) is unchanged," the website says. The website offers the congregation many projects that can involve a month-long commitment, from which to choose; dropping off food donations for Schenectady Community Ministries at the temple Nov. 6, making a dish for Bethesda House's Christmas or Thanksgiving meal for its homeless women and children, donating financially to Mooncatcher or sewing sanitary napkins for impoverished African school girls. There's even a chance to volunteer to transcribe the diaries of 19thcentury explorers and scientists so they will be easy to read and accessible to students of all ages. A link on the synagogue website can take you to Amnesty International's sign up for volunteer researchers who monitor international news and track cases of good people imprisoned by dictatorships. The Dare to Do a Mitzvah is Gates' new social media initiative, designed with kids and teenagers in mind. Each Sunday morning at Gates Quest School, one or more attendees will be challenged, asked to film or photograph the mitzvah he or she performs, then send

it to congregational Jewish living director Arnold Rotenberg. He posts them on the congregation's Facebook page. "We have encouraged kids in our "Dare to do a Mitzvah" to do something at home," Rotenberg said. "I have pics of kids taking out the garbage, sorting

socks, helping with groceries." But two teen girls aimed for a big impact outside their homes. Seventh-graders Evelia Echandy, who is enrolled in Gates Quest, and her friend, Ava Sylvia, are blessed with awesome fundraising skills. They raised $1,000 in a few days for St. Jude's Hospital as their "dare." The temple has hosted opportunities for youthful mitzvahs for decades, long before texting, tweets and TikTok. The Temple Community Service Corps was launched as a major project of the Social Action Committee back in 1971. Gates describes it as a local version of the Peace Corps. According to the application forms, those eligible are in the 11th and 12th grades, at least 16 years old. (The minimum required is 20 hours weekly). They are paid minimum wage for a 35 hour week. The jobs offer chances to work for community agencies such as nursing homes, children's recreation programs and agencies for the homeless and the disabled.

VOTING

Rensselaer was up 127 percent to 4,393, Saratoga County increased by 31 percent to 3,967, Schenectady County went up 49 percent to 4,443, Greene County increased 2 percent to 650, Warren County went up 26 percent to 1,083 and Washington County rose by 8 percent to 314 early voters. Columbia County was among 19 counties statewide that saw early voting turnout drop off. Columbia County fell 7 percent to 3,131 voters showing up early to cast ballots. Voting times on Tuesday are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at local polling spots. “Last year, we saw more come out for the presidential election,” said Rensselaer County Republican Elections Commissioner Jason Schofield. The 2020 early voting totals crushed what was seen in 2019 and 2021. Early voting in the hotly contested presidential election brought out 49,813 voters in Albany County; in Rensselaer County, 23,153 voters; Saratoga County, 27,570 voters; Schenectady County, 26,633 voters; Columbia County, 6,518 voters; Greene County, 4,288 voters; Warren County, 7,454 voters; and in Washington County, 6,099 voters. “People come out and vote in presidential and gubernatorial election years,” said Saratoga County Democratic Elections Commissioner William Fruci. It’s better to compare the local election years when city, county and town offices are on the ballot than compare them to the presidential and gubernatorial races, Fruci said. During the nine days of early voting, each county saw a peak vote on one day. In Albany, Columbia, Saratoga and Schenectady counties the largest number of early voters turned out on Day 9, which was Sunday. The high-turnout day for Rensselaer and Warren counties was Day 5, Wednesday. In Washington County the highest number of voters to cast ballots did it on Day 3, Monday, Oct. 25, while in Greene County the high point came on Day 7, which was Friday. The percentage of total voters going to the polls early, however, is in the single percentage points. Columbia County leads all other counties at 6.5 percent of its 48,305 registered voters casting early ballots. It’s followed by Albany County at 4.5 percent of 210,592 voters; Schenectady County at 4.3 percent of 103,391 voters; Rensselaer County at 4.1 percent of 107,494 voters; Saratoga County at 2.3 percent of 174,372 voters; Warren County at 2.3 percent of 47,419 voters; Greene County at 1.9 percent of 33,928 voters; and Washington County with less than 1 percent — 0.8 percent — of its 38,690 eligible voters. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, the Albany Medical Center chapter of the New York State Nurses Association, and Elizabeth Stack, executive director of the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany, are the latest recipients of the Kate Mullany Medal. The announcement was made by the American Labor Studies Center, which owns and is restoring the Kate Mullany National Historic Site in Troy. AVERILL PARK - This week’s Scholar Athlete is Thomas Nero. Thomas is on the Varsity golf team, and Thomas plays Varsity tennis in the spring. Thomas began playing golf in his freshman year after seeing his father and his brother play the sport. In the winter, Thomas plays in an indoor simulator league, and Thomas plays at Burden Lake Country Club throughout the spring. Even when he is unable to practice on a course, Thomas enjoys practicing in his yard. Thomas’ favorite part about golf is the chance to get outside and play on the courses in our area. Thomas said, “I love having some of my best friends on the team and getting the chance to have fun at practices while also getting better.” Thomas also noted that keeping a clear mind is necessary when playing golf. Going to a golf course after a full day of school and being expected to put away any stress can be a challenge, but playing any sport requires mental strength. Thomas further said it is important to keep yourself from losing confidence, even when you aren’t playing your best. Once your confidence slips it becomes easier to play poorly, and so maintaining your mental fortitude can truly help you at the sport. This year, Thomas’ goal was simply to be a strong leader; both by scoring well and by helping his teammates improve. While Thomas succeeds on the course, he also excels academically. Thomas has a 96 GPA while taking a difficult course load, including Advanced Placement Government and Politics and Advanced Placement Statistics. Thomas also managed to score a 33 on the ACT. To balance school and sports, Thomas keeps proactive during his athletic seasons. Thomas noted that he works best when he is kept busy, and because of that he is better able to balance playing multiple sports in different seasons. Thomas is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and the yearbook club. In his free time, Thomas enjoys listening to music, spending time with friends, and playing video games. Thomas’ father serves as his role model, pushing Thomas to work hard in school and golf. Thomas’ teammates also help him excel in his sport; competing against them drives Thomas to improve his skills. Thomas would advise a younger athlete to have fun with their sport. “Enjoy spending time with your teammates and don’t take for granted the constant improvements you’ll make.” Next year, Thomas plans on attending a four-year college to study business. Thomas hopes to take internships to further explore his interests. We wish Thomas the best as he finishes his senior year and prepares for college.

Historical Markers Since 2006, fifteen historical markers have been placed throughout the town. Until the 1930’s, New York State purchased and placed these blue and yellow markers throughout the state. For the last ninety years, towns and cities were encouraged to continue the program. Our criteria is that markers be placed on or near well traveled roadways and that they commemorate significant architecture, events or citizens. If you feel like a drive around the town, here’s where you’ll find them: Juria Sharpe House- 44 Laura Lane, Bloomingrove Reformed Church- across from the Park and Ride in Defreestville, Phillips/Vandenberg House- corner of Bloomingrove and Jordan Roads, Little Red Schoolhouse- U.S. Rt. 4, ,Bloomingrove Rural Cemetery- U.S. Rt. 4, David Defreest House- Jordan Road. Due to construction, a marker on the site where the former Jacob Sharpe House stood (soon to be the new Aldi’s) was taken down but will be restored to the site on Bloomingrove Drive. The sites in Wynantskill include: White House- corner of Whiteview and Brookside, Thomas Twiss House185 Main Avenue, Kinney Farm- 495 Rt. 66 Avenue and Evergreen Cemetery Rt. 66. Other sites are: Snyder’s Lake- Pershing Avenue, Wetherwax House- Rt. 43 near Peck Road., Rysdorph House Mammoth Spring Road., and the Johannas Hidley House- Hidley Rd. Information concerning these sites was a part of the Town’s National Resources Inventory used by the Open Spaces Committee which recently obtained a Community Technical Assistance Grant. This Committee is chaired by Councilwoman Mary Frances Sabo.

Sand Lake Historical Society to Feature Robert Shuey November 9th Kane-O’Donnell House History ll Before we get back to the Kane-O’Donnell story I wanted to mention the great success of Amazing Graves lll. In spite of the cold and rainy weather, Director Val Kavanaugh, Kane-O’Donnell house, Burden Lake Road committee and actors did an excellent job. Outstanding performances by all the actors, but Fred Erickson’s portrayal of Henry Withy, revolutionary war soldier complete with Scottish brogue was especially inspired. Hazel Drew (Nessa Corcoran) made an appearance at the grave of her uncle William Taylor (Bill Douglas) and Karleen Hayden explained how the Potters Field came into being. Part of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to a marker for the Union Cemetery Potters field. Again, congratulations to all involved. Mary Eileen left off talking about the O’Donnell kids…”Pierce O’Donnell went on to become an author, Congressional candidate, a lecturer at Harvard and Yale

and a distinguished complex litigation lawyer, some of whose clients include Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, humorist Art Buchwald and Shelly Sterling. When he won Shelly’s case she was able to sell the Clippers for $2 billion. I became an actor and have been fortunate enough to keep on working -even this year shooting an episode of the TV series HUNTERS for season 2 (2022) and am currently performing in a live play on Zoom, directed by Tim Robbins, (Shawshank Redemption), in which I tell my father’s amazing story. Eleanor Roosevelt came to tea at our house in the 1920s when her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt was running for governor of New York State. She was so gracious. After the meeting all the ladies of the house and my aunt and mother who were children, she enquired as to whether she’d met everyone and was told that we had an elderly great aunt who was upstairs but wasn’t well. Mrs. Roosevelt said she’d love to say hello so she went upstairs to meet my great great aunt. Annie Slawson, was the widow of Civil War hero Jonathan Slawson, once imprisoned in Andersonville, one of the most wretched of Confederate prison camps. Eleanor Roosevelt blessed our house with her munificent presence, going out of her way to be kind to an elderly aunt. An odd footnote to our family history is regarding comedian Jerry Lewis. His mom and dad were on the vaudeville circuit, so when they were touring they would leave Jerry in Averill Park with their friends the Silbergs who owned the village pharmacy and soda fountain. Young Jerry was crazy about my aunt Helen Kane. He was smitten and madly infatuated with the shy quiet Helen, his polar opposite. But he was kind of wild and crazy and my young aunt Helen was terrified of him. He’d come to the front door on Burden Lake Road and ring the doorbell and my grandmother would answer the door saying loudly, “Oh hello Jerry, how are you?” (to let my aunt know it was the crazy kid staying with the Silbergs). My aunt then had a chance to slip out the back door, run down Tin Pan Alley past the Mill Pond to escape from him. She couldn’t get away fast enough. I was very pleased to find out that our family home on Burden Lake Road was purchased at auction by a New York gentleman who has offered to fix up the place and make it into a Bed and Breakfast which would be wonderful, and restore the dignity to this grand old lady of a house.”

SAND LAKE - On Tuesday November 9th, the Sand Lake Historical Society returns to Sand Lake Town Hall for its monthly program, “Sir, What Do We Do With All The Dead? Mortuary Practices During the American Civil War.” Today’s military considers care for its fallen comrades to be a sacred duty with zero tolerance for mistakes and timely and compassionate notification of next of kin. However, that was not always the case. Prior to the Civil War, service members who died in battle were typically left to decay or buried in place, under primitive conditions, with few provisions for positive identification or notification of family members. Noted Civil War historian Robert W. Shuey will discuss how and why the Civil War marked a major turning point in military mortuary affairs and spurred the Nation into far better caring for its fallen heroes, establishing national cemeteries, and setting the stage for subsequent national days of remembrance such as Memorial and Veterans Day. Shuey is a retired geologist and charter member of and frequent presenter for the Sand Lake Historical Society. In addition, he is a member of the Capital Civil War Roundtable, 125th New York Regimental Association, Da Buffs (Civil War enthusiasts who share their expertise as well as listening to speakers) and a published author of Socket Bayonets of the Great Powers – A Collector’s Guide. SLHS monthly programs are open to the public and are held monthly at the Sand Lake Town Hall Courtroom, 8428 NY 66, Averill Park, beginning at 7 pm. COVID protocols are as determined by the Town for the use of their facility (masks are currently required). SLHS programs are also simulcast on Spectrum Channel 1303 and archived video can be accessed at the SLHS website (http:// sandlakehistory.org). New members are always welcomed. Sky High Adventure Community Center: What’s it All About? AVERILL PARK - By Paul Kolakowski & John Slyer - You have seen the signs on Lake Avenue in Averill Park and have probably wondered what the Sky High Adventure Community Center is. A Community Center in the Averill Park area is a concept that has been around for decades. Now local active community members have stepped up to make it happen creating a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and purchasing the building for community use. The vision for the SHAC Center is to renovate the old St Henry’s School and former Lake Avenue Community Church into a vibrant center for ALL local residents to use and enjoy. The Community Center would include meeting spaces for local organizations, preschool, afterschool programs, a gym, group exercise programs, yoga, senior center, arts programs and eventually even an indoor pool. Local input and participation is critical in bringing this vision fully to life. We are conducting presentations to local groups and doing focus groups to collect data(call to set up a presentation). We need instructors for programs and skilled trades to help with the renovation. We also need grant writers, volunteers and people interested in participating and leading activities. Successes of Our First Year: We have had an amazing first year and we are looking forward to 2022 and beyond. The purchase of 27 Lake Avenue in February 2021 has made the SHAC Center a reality that has been long needed. The building and property have been given a new life for everyone to be part of thanks to the help of volunteers, sponsors, our board of directors, other local not-for-profits and the community. This is what we have NOW:

Large & Small Group Meeting Spaces, Game Rooms, Yoga & Fitness Rooms, Office Spaces (NOW Available), Strength and Weight Room, Classrooms, Cardio-Treadmill Room, Mary Lynn Baldwin Community Library, Walking & Mountain Bike Trails, Athletic Fields, GaGa Ball Pit We need you! The Pittstown Historical Society has Planned the Following Event PITTSTOWN - “The Real Natty Bumppo” is the topic of a lecture to be held on November 18th at the Pittstown Town Hall in Tomhannock at 7:30 PM. The story of how a long standing dispute about the identity of the real Natty Bumppo will be presented by Joyce Brewer and Corinne Eldred of the Hoosick Township Historical Society. You will learn about the competitive spirit that existed between Hoosick Falls and Cooperstown, NY in claiming Natty as their own. Natty is the protagonist in James Fenimore Cooper’s novels, the Leatherstocking Tales. Back in 1865 it was reported that the citizens of Hoosick Falls were starting a movement to erect a mon-

ument marking the grave of Nathaniel Shipman, who locals believed to be the original “Natty Bumppo” buried there in 1809. The century long, unresolved dispute has most recently been addressed by the town of Hoosick, giving Mr. Shipman his rightful place in history. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Pittstown Historical Society.

Many components combine to define a home’s interior. Some homeowners may be partial to certain styles, such as ultra modern or farmhouse, while others may opt for a more traditional look that cannot necessarily be categorized as one style or another. Though many homeowners may spend considerable time and devote a lot of energy to making their home embody a certain style, those who aren’t willing to commit to a particular look can lean on one component to make a stylish statement all their own: paint. Color can be a part of every homeowner’s design arsenal. Bold colors can be used to create a stunning accent wall, while homes with open concepts often utilize color to define rooms. Homeowners who want to revitalize their home interiors can do so with paint, and this approach doesn’t require homeowners to commit to a whole new design style. (Continued from Previous Pg.) their options. The following tips can help homeowners pick the perfect paint for their home interiors. • Take stock, and photographs, of your current furnishings. Many interior designers rely on a simple technique when recommending color schemes to their clients. Choose a standout color from existing furnishings, such as the dominant color from a patterned decorative pillow or piece of furniture, and then look for the same shade to paint the walls. A photograph of the item can be handy when visiting the paint store. • Lighten colors as you go up. The home renovation and design experts at HGTV recommend picking darker color values for the floor, medium color values for the walls and light values for the ceiling. This approach mimics the look of the great outdoors, where the ground tends to be darker than the trees, and the trees are darker than the blue sky. • Utilize paint to create the vibe you want. The home renovation experts at This Old House note that colors evoke an emotional response. Cool colors like blue and green give off a relaxing vibe, which makes them ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms. Red is an intense color that can up the energy ante in any room, which can make it an option for homeowners who want to spark debate around their dinner tables. • Give personal preference its place at the table. Though interior designers may have years of experience picking paint colors for a home and researchers may have determined how certain colors can be utilized to create a desired ambiance in a given room, ultimately homeowners are the ones who will be living in the home. So it’s important that homeowners pick colors they like for their home interiors. Paint is an inexpensive way to transform a room. Homeowners can rely on a combination of color strategies and their personal preferences as they try to decide which colors they want on their interior walls.

OPINION Is Trump's Grip on the GOP Weakening? By Rich Lowry

Republican politicians can be forgiven for thinking that the GOP is Trump's world and they only live in it at his sufferance. He not only survived Jan. 6 and his second impeachment -- he has thrived since. Trump's rallies are still remarkably well-attended, he is making progress in his project of killing the careers of Republicans who supported his impeachment, and big majorities of Republicans tell pollsters they want Trump to run for president again. And yet, there are reasons to believe Trump's dominance is exaggerated and that it is slowly degrading, such that by the time the 2024 Republican primaries roll around, he'll be challengeable and beatable if he runs. It's not unusual for a former president to own his party until someone comes and takes it from him -- Bill Clinton prior to Barack Obama, for example. What's different is that parties typically aren't kind to one-term presidents who lost their reelection bids, and generally former presidents aren't so bent on exercising control over their parties once they vacate the White House. Part of the reason Trump has clung to his fanciful stolen-election narrative is to avoid the stench of defeat of Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush. On top of this, Trump has an intact political operation that is paying a lot of attention to his potential endorsements and how they will or won't enhance his own power. This obviously makes Trump an important player, and maybe more. But there are indications of an undertow and factors that might increase it in the years ahead. Trump's media footprint is much reduced. Data from SocialFlow shows engagement with Trump stories plummeting in March of this year and it took another jag down in August and September. As for Trump's polling numbers, Republicans might tell pollsters they want him to run again as a way to stick a finger in the eye of the media or as a general statement of warm feelings toward him. Even if these findings are based on entirely forthcoming and sincere sentiments, wanting Trump to run is a threshold question that falls short of a commitment to vote for him two and a half years from now. Trump presumably will be vulnerable to electability questions. He lost last fall in part because Biden outperformed Hillary Clinton among suburban voters and independents. Biden is alienating these voters, but there's nothing to indicate that Trump has done anything since November 2020 to make himself less repellent to them. GOP politicians have every reason to do what they can to keep Trump and his voters on board in the interest of a unified base in the run-up to the 2022 midterms. But if Republicans take Congress next year and are worried about keeping it in 2024, they will be wary of once again needing candidates to run better than Trump in swing districts to keep their gavels. Trump has an increasingly self-referential message. In 2016, he talked of fighting for his voters and hammered neglected issues of concern to them, foremost among them trade and immigration. Now, he urges those voters to fight for him based on the imperative of denying his loss, which is of overwhelming concern to his ego and continued political viability. At the end of the day, what primary voters in both parties most want is to win. And this is Trump's true Achilles' heel. The fact is that he lost to Joe Biden and, despite last-minute changes in election procedures and the media and social media landscape being stacked again him, it was fundamentally his doing. His chief vulnerability is that, eventually, someone will put this to him directly, and it will land. Perhaps if Trump decides to make the plunge in 2024, he will clear the field and sweep to his third consecutive GOP presidential nomination. His surface-level strength at the moment, though, might obscure a weakness that will tell over time. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

Free Stuff Isn't Free

Cal Thomas, Tribune Content Agency

It's open enrollment season for Medicare. Local TV stations and cable networks are flooded with ads for various insurance supplements. They promise "free" dental care, free transportation to doctors, free drugs, free dentures, and lots of other free stuff. Paid spokespersons speak of "benefits" and "entitlements." They say subscribers could receive as much as $100 a month back into their Social Security checks. Even the phone number to call to sign up is "absolutely free." Read the small print and you'll find that some of the plans vary by region, some by ZIP code. Sometimes there's a nominal cost, so it's not actually "free." Call a "licensed" insurance agent for more details. Licensed by whom? Probably the companies selling the plans. Some of the ads pay aging celebrities like quarterback Joe Namath, basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson and comedian Jimmie Walker to pitch their products. Notice the use of certain words and how they also are used by politicians to dupe people into believing they are not getting what they "deserve" because "the rich" - those predatory, stingy, and greedy people -- are not paying their "fair share" in taxes. Selective language has long been used by snake oil salesmen and politicians to flim-flam the public. That is why propaganda messages from dictators are effective. President Biden's falling approval numbers suggest a dwindling number of people believe his claim that taxing billionaires will pay for the trillions he wants to spend. Even the word "infrastructure" is manipulative because only a small percentage of the proposed spending is targeted to repair roads, bridges, and airports. The rest will be spent on other things unrelated to infrastructure and drive us deeper into debt, along with a separate social spending bill to expand "entitlements" that will addict more people to government. People not only have to read between the lines to find the truth, but also explore different sources of information. If you read only, say, The Washington Post and The New York Times and watch CNN and MSNBC,

you will likely believe what comes from their worldview - government is good and here to help you, at least when Democrats are in control. If you read other publications, say, The Washington Times and The Wall Street Journal, watch Fox News and listen to conservative talk radio, you will learn things you didn't know by consuming only left-of-center media. The media also have the power to ignore certain subjects that would give consumers a more balanced information diet. The problem is that too many people read and tune into only those sources that reinforce what they already believe. That, too, is a type of propaganda. In a letter to the editor of The Wall Street Journal, Daniel C. Oliverio of Buffalo, N.Y., deconstructs the "fair share" lingo with his personal story: "As a self-employed professional in a law partnership, I am one of those high-wage earners. I pay over 45 percent of my income in taxes to New York and the U.S. Treasury. That's not counting real-estate tax, both sides of Social Security and Medicare taxes, sales tax and lost deductions. I have no trust fund and can't rely on interest and dividends alone." Here's the key part which flies in the face of the envy and entitlement crowd: "I have worked and saved my whole life ... I have paid my bills and aggressively funded a retirement. To hear ad nauseam the lie that I am getting away with something at tax time ... is frustrating. Now President Biden wants even more on the false premise that people like me aren't paying enough. Half isn't enough?" Once we celebrated and encouraged success. Now we subsidize mediocrity and failure. We are then surprised we are getting more of the latter and less of the former. Do your homework. Don't be manipulated by the language used by politicians and TV ads promising free stuff. Readers may email Cal Thomas at tcaeditors@tribpub.com.
