Blue Christmas Service: Honoring Life and Loss in the Holidays STEPHENTOWN - The Christmas season has an amazing ability to trigger nostalgic memories— both of happy and sad, gratitude and grief. The Blue Christmas tradition honors the fact that for many of us we experience all kinds of loss—the loss of relationships, loss of trust, loss of jobs, loss of health, loss of faith, the loss of joy. Authentic spirituality does not hide this truth, and instead allows us the space for honesty, reflection, community and practices of support. No matter your circumstance, this is an open welcoming service of candlelight, songs, prayers, and hope. Pastor Chris Garrison leads the service at the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road on Sunday December 19th at 4pm. All are welcome. Handicapped accessible. Masks required.
Church of the Redeemer RENSSELAER - Sunday service is at 9 AM followed by coffee hour. Thank you to all who
came to make our craft sale the success it was. We hope you enjoy the hats, ear warmers, mittens, blankets, and household items you purchased as much as we enjoyed making them. Hot Mess Crafters meets on Wednesday at 10 AM in the Hearth Room. Join us to learn or share a skill while enjoying good company. Bible Study will be held on Wednesday, December 1, at 4 PM. Thrift Shop will be open on Thursday, December 2, from 3-6, and on Saturday, December 4, from 9-2. The Church of the Redeemer is an Episcopal church located on CDTA bus route #214 at the corner of Third and Catherine Streets. There is handicap parking, a ramp in front, and a parking lot in the rear. Fr. Robert Haskell may be emailed at rhaskell2@ nycap.rr.com
Navigating Family Landmines: A Holiday Gathering Survival Guide STEPHENTOWN - Do you sometimes feel that pit in your stomach around holiday gatherings—and it has nothing to do with the rich foods or treats? The holidays are a time of celebration, family, and fun. They can also be a time where disagreements surface, old fights are rehashed, or stories told we’d rather forget. When politics and masks/vaccine practices can divide a family as much as a nation, it’s helpful to have a few tricks to navigate the landmines. Join our workshop open to the community on how to steer clear of the conversations that feel potentially explosive, if not relationally unsafe. Pastor Chris Garrison leads this discussion at the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road on Sunday December 12th at 4pm. All are welcome. Handicapped accessible. Masks required.
Poestenkill Residents POESTENKILL - As some of you know all too well, there continues to be portions of our town that lack internet service. The Comprehensive Broadband Connectivity Act, enacted in May of this year, requires the Public Service Commission to study the availability, reliability, and cost of high- speed internet and broadband services in New York state and publish a map indicating access to internet service by location. The Department of Public Service has hired ECC technologies to gather the necessary data to develop the map, and report the findings. ECC will use data collected from internet service providers, its own field activities, and consumers. An on line broadband survey will be the main source of the consumer data. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and includes an optional broadband speed test. The link can be found at: www.empirestatebroadband.com. I urge all residents to take part in the survey so our need for this essential service is well documented. I would also like to provide additional information concerning T-Mobile and their Project 10 Million. The program is offering free internet access and Please see POESTENKILL 6

Repairs reopen ‘Buffalo Bridge’
Severe structural woes led to decision to close in December 2019 By KENNETH C. CROWE II
The “Buffalo Bridge” is open again after Rensselaer County completed repairs to the deteriorated span that crosses the Amtrak railroad tracks, allowing traffic to take a shortcut across the town. The county shut the bridge to traffic in December 2019 due to significant structural problems that had developed since it was last worked on in 1997. Amtrak didn’t grant its approval for the repair work until June 2021. Standing on the rebuilt bridge Tuesday, County Executive Steve McLaughlin said that once the work was authorized by the railroad it was finished quite quickly. With money from the new $1.2 trillion federal infrastructure fund expected to pay for work, McLaughlin said bureaucracy should not be allowed to hold

3 districts, 3 responses to outbreak East Greenbush, Albany and Hudson Falls employ diverse ways to educate amid spike By RACHEL SILBERSTEIN, LAUREN STANFORTH
Middle schools appear particularly vulnerable this season as school districts grapple with a notable rise in COVID-19 numbers ahead of the holidays. Three middle schools in the Capital Region — in the Albany, East Greenbush and Hudson Falls districts — saw infections spike this month, sending hundreds of students, teachers and staff into quarantine. But each district is taking a different approach to easing the spread of the coronavirus. School leaders say middle school students are more susceptible than other age groups because they are likely to exhibit symptoms but until recently, sixth-graders were ineligible for any COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccinated students who are exposed to someone with COVID-19 do not need to quarantine unless they are showing symptoms. Schools make determinations over whether to close a building along with local health departments, which assist with contact tracing when there is a positive case, to determine how to respond to an SEE OUTBREAK 6 uptick.

up repairs and renovations that should be handled expediently. The county bridge carries Van Hoesen Road, also known as Rensselaer County Route 5, over the tracks. They spent $665,000 to repair the bridge. County Legislator Chuck Peter, Schodack supervisor-elect, said the newly opened bridge will end delays in transporting children to school and make it easier for emergency services to respond to calls in the area around the bridge. The Buffalo Bridge moniker comes from the GEM Farms Buffalo on the south side of the bridge. It provides the quick way to the buffalo farm when traveling south from Route 9. Otherwise, traffic had to detour some five miles to cross the tracks. The Mesick family has worked the farm since 1793. They’re best known throughout the

OUTBREAK
More than 220 have been quarantined at East Greenbush’s Goff Middle School this CONTINUED FROM 3 month, but the suburban Rensselaer County district chose not to suspend in-person learning. The district saw 76 cases in the last two weeks, with 18 of them occurring at Goff. Since the start of the year, the district has seen 125 cases. District spokesman Mark Adam noted that many of the quarantines stem from the sixth-grade classrooms, which are largely unvaccinated. “What we’re finding is most students who are quarantined are not developing COVID-19 and they return to school after 10 days,” he said. In Washington County’s Hudson Falls district, which enrolls about 2,400 students, there were 60 active cases districtwide on Thursday, with 18 of those cases at the Hudson Falls Intermediate School. As of Friday, there were 333 students out of school districtwide due to quarantine protocols. The school has largely stayed open, shifting to remote learning for only two days this week. The shift was a result of transportation challenges prompted in part by the contact tracing protocol, according to district Superintendent Daniel Ward. “If we have a specific classroom where we have a concern, we take a look at that particular classroom,” Ward said. “We are trying not to take away all of those vital resources we have for the other 2,000 students in our school ... There are so many students who are just starting to get back in the rhythm after being out of school last year. It’s not something we take lightly because they are accessing so many wraparound services.” The school district has grappled with several COVID-19 waves since school resumed in September. More than 230 students and employees, or 10 percent of the school population, have fallen ill. Earlier in the year, more than 400 Hudson Falls students and staff were in quarantine. Washington County currently has the highest infection rate in the state, according to the state Department of Health website. Other county districts, like Fort Ann and Granville schools, are also seeing high infection rates. Like many rural areas, Hudson Falls initially had challenges with vaccine access, but in-school clinics have helped to narrow the vaccine gap; vaccination rates in the area have jumped 20 percent in recent weeks, according to Ward. “It’s a gigantic balancing act,” Ward said. Albany’s William S. Hackett Middle School has 11 new COVID-19 cases with a total of 109 contacts required to quarantine since the start of the month. Reflecting a more cautious approach, the school on Wednesday switched to remote learning through Monday, Nov. 29, and has arranged for COVID-19 surveillance testing in the building. “With a sudden increase in COVID-19 cases at Hackett, a large number of individuals in isolation or quarantine as a result, and a large number of symptomatic individuals within the school community this week, we made the decision as a proactive measure to lessen the risk of further transmission,” spokesman Ron Lesko said. “We did that successfully earlier this fall when we experienced similar COVID-19 spikes at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School, and Montessori Magnet School.” Because the switch to remote learning is happening in conjunction with Thanksgiving break next week, students are missing just five days of in-person instruction. The school has COVID-19 testing clinics planned Friday and Monday, and will evaluate that plan after the testing results are received.

Athlete of the Week by Tyler Michaels
Francesca (Frankie) Morone • Scholar Athlete •
AVERILL PARK - This week’s Scholar Athlete is Francesca (Frankie) Morone. Frankie is a captain on the Varsity soccer team where she plays as central defender. Frankie also participates on the track and field team in the spring. Frankie began playing soccer 14 years ago when her parents signed her up for Averill Park’s recreational league. Frankie quickly grew to love the sport, and now plays travel soccer in the winter and spring outside of her school soccer season. Frankie’s favorite part about her sport is the team that she has the opportunity to play with. “I love my team so much and how it feels when we all achieve something together”. Frankie acknowledged that it can be difficult to keep oneself focused in soccer. Playing every day can make it very easy to grow tired or lose commitment, but Frankie and all of her teammates persevere through the challenge. This year, Frankie was proud to serve as a captain of her team and noted that the progress the team made from the beginning of the season was noticeable. In the spring, Frankie ensures that she takes care of herself so she is in proper condition to play two sports in the same season. In addition to her athletic success, Frankie excels academically. Frankie has a 99.43 GPA, and is currently enrolled in New Visions STEM. To balance school and sports, Frankie uses her homework to set a schedule for what she needs to do, and talks to her friends about school to ensure she is on track. Frankie is a member of the National Honor Society, and enjoys spending lots of time with the treble choir. Frankie’s siblings Sophia and DJ help serve as Frankie’s role models by setting positive examples as scholar athletes. Coach Luskin also supports Frankie during both of her athletic seasons, and Coach Tourtellot and Coach Gile both help Frankie develop as a player. Frankie’s parents have been extremely supportive in all of her endeavors. Frankie would advise a younger athlete not to worry if their sport is challenging to them. “You should just stick with it if that’s what you want to do, and if you put in the effort, you’ll get so used to the field that you’ll surprise yourself with how much becomes second nature.” Next year, Frankie hopes to attend William’s College for four years. We wish Frankie the best as she finishes her senior year and prepares for college.

Good Things Happening in Sand Lake SAND LAKE - When Rensco town budgets are strapped by flood repair and Covid relief, one aspiring Eagle Scout is finding a way! There is no secret that Rensco has been challenged by thousands of dollars in flood damage and of course, the Covid crisis. Unfortunately, when this happens, community projects take a back seat to road repair and other critical needs. This is where the aspiring Eagle Scout Wolfgang Balga comes in. Wolfy, in partnership with the newly established Skyhigh Community Center in Sand Lake, has committed to an ambitious project of building an impressive, much needed pavilion for community use. If that isn’t notable enough, he is doing it all through donations, vol-
unteers and old fashioned elbow grease. This is what he says on the gofundme page: “Hello, My name is Wolfgang Balga. I am a boy scout from troop 2526 out of Averill Park and I am organizing the construction of a pavilion to be built at the Skyhigh Community Center. By donating your time, expertise, materials or money to this project, you are helping to provide the community with a great outside area for any and all activities, whether it be a for a nice place to meet outside during the summer, or a stage for a concert or other performances, this pavilion is a must for everything that goes on at the community center.” The deadline for completion is spring of 22 because Wolfy will be leaving this lifetime legacy to go to college. For more information about this project please visit the gofundme page by scanning the attached image with your phone or visiting https:// gofund.me/d902147c Check back here for continued updates on the project.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing in Memory of Christopher Bascom EAST GREENBUSH - Once again family and friends of Christopher Bascom will be ringing the Salvation Army bells in his memory from 10 am – 8 pm Wednesday, Dec 1, at the Walmart in East Greenbush. Christopher would have been 35 this December 1 had his life not been cut short by a drunk, hit and run driver when he was 16 and a junior at Columbia High School. CHS students have also rung the bells in Chris’ memory all these years and will be manning the kettles this year on Sat., Dec. 4, from 9 am -1 pm.
Because Christopher was such a caring, giving, and compassionate boy who always strived to make others happy, it is fitting to honor his memory by having donations made to a group which shares his values. While the Salvation Army works year ‘round to assist people in need, its Red Kettle efforts at Christmas time help focus on such needs. Contributions may be put in the red kettles or sent directly to the Salvation Army Troy Corps, 410 River St., Troy, NY 12180. You can write on the memo line, “Christopher Bascom”. Submitted by: Janice G. Newport, Christopher’s maternal grandmother

Troy stands out in new ‘Gilded Age’ trailer Court house, Castle among Collar City sights in HBO Max ad By LAUREN STANFORTH AND KENNETH C CROWE II
A one-minute trailer for the nine-part HBO series “The Gilded Age,” was released Thursday, providing a peek into what the series — heavily shot in and around Troy — will look like. Exteriors and interiors were used to make Troy look like 1882 New York City for the Julian Fellowes series, which stars Christine Baranski, Audra Mc-Donald and Cynthia Nixon. The trailer said the series will stream on HBO Max starting Jan. 24. Dirt was spread on the streets around Monument Square, and storefronts were made to look like 19th-century timepieces by the time filming ended in June. The minute-long trailer gives only fleeting glimpses of background — but several are from filming this spring, said Kathy Sheehan, the Troy city historian and Rensselaer County historian, after viewing it several times. “Flashes of Troy,” Sheehan said about the fast-moving trailer. An entrance to the Rensselaer County Court House at Second and Congress streets appears at the start of the trailer in a composite street scene. Interiors from The Castle, the fraternity house of Pi Kappa Phi at 49 Second St., which was also used in “The Age of Innocence,” and the Frear House at Russell Sage College, also appear,
Sheehan said. “The Gilded Age” staff was looking for upscale office space, homes, tenement housing and concert hall space circa 1882. “We filled the bill on all of them,” Sheehan said last summer. The released trailer description says: “In a new world, a new age is about to begin. The Gilded Age begins in 1882 with young Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) moving from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her thoroughly old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) and Ada Brook (Nixon). Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?” Fellowes, who also created the popular dramatic series “Down-ton Abbey,” is known for his attention to historic detail. “The Gilded Age” is set in late 19th-century New York several decades before the action of “Downton Abbey,” which opened with news of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The show portrayed the lives of British aristocrats through the late 1920s. There is expected to be a crossover between the two series. Oakwood Cemetery in Troy’s Lansingburgh neighborhood filled in for funeral and related scenes that could have taken place in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Both opened around mid-century and were the preferred

burial sites for the wealthy and famous. The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall on Second Street provided the theater space need for filming. Besides writing and creating “The Gilded Age,” Fellowes is executive producer along with executive producer Gareth Neame; director/executive producer, Michael Engler; executive producer, David Crockett; director/executive producer Salli Richardson-Whitfield; and writer/ co-executive producer Sonja Warfield.
Engineers prepare with pro treatment RPI get ready for NCAA Tournament game with stop at Patriots’ facility By MARK SINGELAIS
The RPI football team will have an NFL experience before the Engineers play their Division III NCAA Tournament firstround game. On their way to face Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., on Saturday, the RPI football team will make a stop at the New England Patriots’ home in Foxboro, Mass. The Engineers will practice at 2 p.m. Friday inside Empower Field House, the Patriots’ indoor practice facility adjacent to Gillette Stadium. RPI coach Ralph Isernia set up the practice through Patriots senior football advisor Matt Patricia, a 1996 RPI graduate. “It’ll be great,” Isernia said. “I got in touch with Matt Patricia and he got me in touch with a couple of guys. I was grateful that he was able to get back to us because they’re playing tonight in Atlanta ... So we’re able to get into their field house, their indoor facility. That’ll be pretty cool.” RPI has 21 Massachusetts natives on the team. “It’s kind of funny,” Isernia said. “We’ve got a lot of guys from Massachusetts on the team and we’ve got a lot of Patriots fans. A couple of guys said, ‘I hope they’re there. Maybe I can get a tryout or something like that.’” RPI graduate quarterback George Marinopoulos is a Miami Dolphins fan, but is looking forward to practicing at their AFC
East rival. “It’s going to be pretty sweet,” said Marinopoulos, a Guilderland High graduate. “I found out yesterday. Coach told us and I’ve been pretty pumped up for it.” Marinopoulos said he’ll forget about his Dolphins allegiance in the facility where Bill Belichick coaches and Tom Brady once practiced. “It won’t mean much to me tomorrow,” he said. “It’ll be OK. All of the times I’ve been rooting against the Patriots these 20some years, that goes out the window tomorrow.” RPI (9-1) takes on Endicott (8-2) at noon Saturday. While understanding it’s a business trip, Marinopoulos said he’ll take the time to savor the experience he’ll have in Foxborough on Friday. “We’re going to be on a mission the next couple of days, going to get a win, but it’s all about enjoying the moment and embracing the moment we’re in now because once this is gone, it doesn’t come back. I’m definitely going to take a couple of minutes to soak that in tomorrow,” he said. The University at Albany men’s lacrosse team played at Gillette Stadium in 2018 in an NCAA Tournament semifinal loss to Yale.

Glendora Vegetarian Club The current edition of American Vegan Online reports that black owned restaurant businesses are on the rise. Owners of Unsoul Food Cafe, Bryon and Natasha Docketts, won a huge award in the their Philly MAC-Down 4 competition, for their recipe that contains vegan cheese. Shaun Thomas and Charmaine Quarle of Go Vegan Philly won the Vegan Philly Award as the Best New Vegan Restaurant. V Marks the Shop, owned by Carlo Giordana and Carmella Lanni, are famous for their vegan convenience foods. Go vegan! Glendora notices the preponderance of “cheese food” and “cheese products” and the paucity of real cheese. This is veganism. What is a vegan? A vegan person lives harmlessly - no hurting of animals or anybody else. This means no animal products. Glendora and friends will enjoy another vegan Thanksgiving with turnips, potatoes, gravy, dressing, peas, squash and cranberry sauce. All are welcome. It will be the week before Thanksgiving. Jokes 1. Mommy, why does a bride always wear white? It is the color we associate with happiness and joy and comfort. Then why does the groom wear black? 2. Son, money doesn’t grow on trees. Then how come banks always have branches? For more information, visit americanvegan.org. Contact Glendora’s Vegetarian Club at 518 931-0266 in Albany NY.

DOH confirms PFOS in Liberty Lane well
Parents in the Averill Park School District need to be made aware that Averill Park School Board and executive administrators have no respect for the rank-and-file worker who provides vital services to students. Wages are so low in the Averill Park School District for non-instructional staff that transportation aides, cafeteria staff, mechanics, custodians, and bus drivers are leaving their jobs to work at other school districts that pay much higher wages. Doesn’t this put our children in jeopardy? The School Board and administrators are claiming they cannot negotiate with us until January 2021. This just is not true. They had no problem with negotiating a new Management Confidential contract for themselves which included giving top administrators a 3.25% raise as well as a $1,000 retroactive bonus over three years. There is no reason a good-faith negotiation cannot be conducted now. Most of the executive administrators are making six-figured salaries. The School Superintendent was just given a $25,000 increase to his current $177,000 salary with an increase to 25 vacation days. In contrast, the average non-instructional staff member makes less than $30,000 annually. Our non-instructional staff are dedicated to protecting our students. Parents, please reach out to the School Board members and tell them to make these vital workers a priority NOW. Give them a living wage! Keith Hammond, APSCD Bus Driver
Not surprisingly, and based on the lengthy record of intentional neglect here by Poestenkill and the DEC and the cover-up by Poestenkill and the DEC of environmental crimes at the Poestenkill transfer station, a key component of the plan to make that area of Poestenkill in the triangle between Liberty Lane, Snyder’s Corners Road and Rt. 352 into a giant landfill to replace Colonie and Rensselaer, one could say according to plan to make those residential properties worthless by intentionally poisoning the water, as that land on the north side of Liberty Lane will be the south lip of the Regional landfill Poestenkill is to become, with a key access route for C&D waste across from Algonquin school through a key ten-acre parcel on the north side of Liberty Lane, further RCHD well tests have confirmed the presence of PFOS in the groundwater serving drinking water wells on Liberty Lane in Poestenkill, which wells have a hydraulic connection that points right back to the Poestenkill transfer station, as was proven in 1975 when a fuel oil spill at the end of Liberty Lane across from the Poestenkill transfer station contaminated those same wells with fuel oil. And there is nobody in the Town of Poestenkill who should be surprised at any of this, given the number of times this information has been disclosed to the people of Poestenkill, giving them an opportunity to speak out against the plan when afforded the opportunity, as they
Schoolteachers It all started with Amazing Graves, I think. I volunteered to write the script for Lucinda Horton, a schoolteacher. All we really know about Lucy is that she was a teacher in Sand Lake and passed away in 1858 at 26 years of age. There is a lot of information in the genealogy file on the Hortons but unfortunately not much on Lucy. I was able to find journals with info on the Sliter’s Corners/South Sand Lake one room schoolhouse back in the late 1800s. Lucy then, became a sort of composite character using this journal material and my teacher’s perspective thrown in for good measure. I was very pleased when I attended the dress rehearsal and saw the actor Maghen Ryan bring this character to life. In her closing words she relates how she loved being a teacher, was able to touch so many lives and felt she made a difference in the world. A week before Amazing Graves I was out to dinner and recognized three former Algonquin Middle School students working together over dinner at a corner table. I often see students in Millers or around town which is rewarding. Then Alexia Parascandola stood up turned around and said, Mr. Moore! With that Jessica Lincoln and Jeff Cross also came over to our table. We talked about their Algonquin experience and programs like morning announcements in 8th grade and video club. They were working on planning their Class of ’91, 30th reunion. It was coming up on Saturday at the Nassau
Sportsman’s Club and they invited me to come. It was a great celebration. All of these “kids” are now approaching 50! I ran into Angela Scanu who sang at the 8th grade graduation ceremony. She proudly introduced me to her son. I talked to Jen Peasley’s husband Mike Slavin who is working hard as a musician with Whiskey Highway. Then we all went outside for a class photo. Behind me came a comment from Nicole Bergman about how much she enjoyed 7th grade social studies. We talked about social studies, our Wednesday words of wisdom quotes and current events discussions. She also reminded me of how I stressed the importance of the Berlin wall coming down back in 1989. At this point Jeff Cross, one of the reunion organizers showed me a plaque honoring members of the class that had passed. Jeff and the class are starting a scholarship fund in their memory. See the Go Fund Me site below for donations. I felt honored to be invited to this celebration and encourage all Averill Park alumni to check out the Class of 1991 Reunion Facebook page and give generously to the scholarship fund. And so just one more thing to say…Thank you all. https://www.gofundme.com/f/class-of-91-memorial-scholarship?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cf+shareflow-1

And so it came to pass that the drinking water serving Liberty Lane is now unfit to drink. Paul Plante, Poestenkill
Ditch Opinion Section in the Advertiser When I think of the Advertiser, I think of local news. Why do I read the Advertiser? For local news. Therefore, I am always confused when I get to the “Opinion” section. The Advertiser has an opinion section that regularly reprints a select few national news stories. I believe that there is no need for an “Opinion” section in the Advertiser because a) national articles are not local news, and b) the Advertiser has a local opinion section: “Letters to the Editor.” Advertiser, let the people in Rensselaer County write their opinions (in Letter to the Editor), and ditch your Opinion section. Debbie Hoffman, Brunswick, NY -9am-2pm, and the first saturday of each month 10am1pm. We ask to call ahead at 518-732-4120 for food calls so staff can prepare order for delivery to your vehicle. New clients are asked to provide proof of residency on their initial visit. Donations are currently being accepted clothing wise for fall /early winter apparel preferably during business hours. Joe Biden's Incredible Shrinking Presidency By Rich Lowry
Joe Biden was never exactly a colossus bestriding the Earth, but he's been getting smaller by the day. A Washington Post poll over the weekend suggested that his presidency is, for now, a smoking political crater. It had him at a 41% approval rating, despite the passage of his long-sought infrastructure bill that was supposed to buoy him and his party. Even more striking, the sur vey found that Republicans lead Democrats on the generic congressional ballot by 10 points, 51% to 41%, an unprecedentedly strong showing for the GOP that forecasts an earthquake, tsunami, and maybe a few more natural disasters for Democrats come next fall. And who can be surprised? Biden is stumbling, out of touch, and weak. Two of his major initiatives, at the border and in Afghanistan, created completely avoidable catastrophes. He has given no sense of being in control of events or even his own party. He is an accidental president who is running smack into his own inadequacies and absurd pretensions. No one in Washington over the last four decades ever said that Joe Biden was just the man with the foresight, wisdom and deft political touch to lead the free world. No, he was an average senatorial bloviator whose first two presidential campaigns flamed out in embarrassing fashion, before he hit the jackpot when Barack Obama choose him as his running mate in 2008. Showing the advantage of hanging around for a very long time, Biden won both the 2020 Democratic nomination and the presidency by default. In the primaries, the former vice president looked good in comparison to Bernie Sanders, and he ran in the general on not being Donald Trump. Now, Biden is allied with Bernie Sanders, who helped write the first version of his Build Back Better plan, and Donald Trump no longer looms as large as Biden's foil. The best case for Biden's presidency was that he could be a kind of consensus caretaker -- restoring a sense of normality and maintaining a low pro-
file while riding in the slipstream of improving economic conditions and a diminishing pandemic. Instead, he's been carried along by the left-wing tide of his party and repeatedly engaged in unconstitutional executive overreach. On top of it all, he's brought his own brand of incompetence, exemplified by the botched pullout from Afghanistan. His foremost mistake was overestimating an attenuated electoral mandate for pedestrian governance as a permission slip for passing nearly the entirety of the progressive agenda in the space of less than a year. Not only has there been sticker shock over the price tag of the Biden agenda, but it has little connection to things people truly care about. The infrastructure bill polls well, but no one goes about their daily lives worried about the alleged crisis of crumbling bridges and tunnels. Meanwhile, the Build Back Better bill started as a $3.5 trillion grab bag of everything that progressives want but couldn't get in the infrastructure bill. Passing as much spending as you possibly can before you lose Congress a year from now, which is essentially the rationale behind Build Back Better, is not a compelling reason for a historic spate of federal spending. That legislation has been pared down to largely a child care and climate change bill. That's an unnatural pairing that came about not because those are the top two things that the public wants from Washington, but because they happen to be what Democrats think they can pass. Only now is the White House trying to argue that the infrastructure bill and Build Back Better will address real public concerns, namely the supply chain disruptions and the inflation that is outpacing wage growth. This is clearly a tendentious, after-the-fact argument. The White House can hope that the supply chain bottlenecks ease and inflation declines, but Biden's disastrous first year speaks to a more intractable problem with the lackluster occupant of the Oval Office himself. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.
Dime Time By Bob Franken
In 1931, smack dab at the beginning of the Great Depression (although, when was any depression "great"?), it was a big hit: "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?" Today, 90 years later, what with inflation, the 10 cents of yesteryear has a purchasing power of $1.82, so the song in 2021 would be "Brother Could You Spare a Buck 82?" It doesn't have the same pizazz, does it? John D. Rockefeller used to throw dimes at the crowds he encountered. Rockefeller was the rich guy of his generation, sort of like Donald Trump, except that Rockefeller was successful in business and Trump was a failure in business but was a success in politics, rising to president once ... or twice, if you believe him. As president, in 2017, Dona ld Tr ump tossed paper towels at his audience while delivering aid to hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico. He was always that sensitive. He has been replaced in the White House by Joe Biden, but Biden faces a threat that is known as a saboteur of more than one chief executive: inf lation. Rising consumer prices are death to a presidency. Voters don't want to hear about supply chains; they don't even k now what a supply chain is, no matter how many times TV news broadcasts the same ja m med sh ips st uck full of cargo containers coming from China. They don't want to
hear about the tragic pandemic that also did l a st i ng h a r m to t he world economy and is causing prices to rise to the highest rates in 30 years. They do want someone to blame for the cost of cars, and t he ga s t hat powers them, as they head to the grocery store and to shop for the Christmas gifts they can't afford, even online, even misdelivered. No matter how many jobs the new infrastructure legislation creates, inflation is a politician's nightmare -- that is, for the one who is in office. For the one who is running against the incumbent, it's a dream come t r ue . Jo e Biden b ecomes his or her scapegoat. It's no matter that he's less than a year into office and he has three years to go, the heart of the American electorate is located wherever the wallet is. And the spiral of inflation only gets more intense. From a government point of view, acts by Cong ress or congressional inaction can only make the economy more, uh, depressing. Let's suppose the chicken-playing members of the House and Senate miscalculate, or the administration does, and doesn't pass a raise to the debt ceiling. That will require the United States of America to become a deadbeat in that it is forced to default on its bills. That'll cause inflation to get worse at the same time that production lags because of market forces. Put another way, a supply
chain is only as strong as its weakest link. No matter who is at fault, the president gets the blame. The president is Joe Biden. Even if he stole the election in the grandest of grand larcenies -- as Trump absurdly alleged -- he's still the president and will get the blame. So, Donald Trump can ta ke his cheap shots as the bla mer, and Biden will be the blamee. At least if it's a repeat of the 2020 campaign in 2024. Anyone who holds out hope that Trump's legal problems will overwhelm him, including the charges of direct involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, should not dream that he will face legal accountability. He won't. He can demagogue away any charge, no matter how much evidence exists. Besides, inf lation as an issue trumps even treason. Joe Biden knows, or he should know, that the economy is deadly as a campaign issue, pa r ticula rly when it comes to eating a rising paycheck. And even if they recede or level off, he does not get credit for it. Joe Biden is caught up in that reality battle where the dime store is replaced by the dollar store. It's made for Dona ld Tr ump, whose claim to success is inflating or twisting reality. Bob Franken is an Emmy Award-winning reporter who covered Washington for more than 20 years with CNN.

Swindled Again Cal Thomas, Tribune Content Agency
Remember those "shovel-ready jobs" promised by the Obama-Biden administration in 2011? When many failed to appear after passage of this spending boondoggle, President Obama joked,"Shovel-ready was not as shovel-ready as we expected." That law, noted Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), cost $787 billion, of which $48 billion was supposed to go for infrastructure. It was disingenuously called the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Harvard economist Martin Feldstein calculated that each job created would cost taxpayers $200,000. When asked about this statistic in a September 26, 2011 interview with ABC News, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner did not dispute the figure, saying, "the price tag is the wrong way to measure the bill's worth." We're hearing similar assertions about the new law. Welcome to "shovel-ready 2.0" and another swindle that has just been perpetrated on us in the name of "infrastructure." Swindle means "to obtain by fraud or deceit." The administration and congressional Democrats claim the bill will cost us nothing. That's because they have used accounting gimmicks and rely on money
they hope will come in through tax increases. Won't that cost something? The new law is 2,700 pages long. I would bet my house payment that no Member of Congress read it all before voting on it. The Heritage Foundation has dug into the details and revealed items that add to the debt, probably increase already high inflation, and likely boost the cost of essential goods and services. For starters, says a team of Heritage analysts, "it bails out the Highway Trust Fund to the tune of $118 billion. The fund suffers from chronic deficits due to overspending. Rather than bring it into balance, senators are whipping out the national credit card, and then pretending they didn't when it comes to keeping score." This is throwing good money after bad, since when it comes to government programs failure is never an excuse to spend less money. The analysts write: "There is a laundry list of tired budget gimmicks, including the sale of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, extending long-standing fees, and spectrum sales. Many of these gimmicks have a history of falling short of expectations." See last sentence in the previous paragraph.
The law was sold to the public with promises that airports, highways and bridges will be repaired. In fact, note the Heritage analysts, the law "adds as much new spending to modes like mass transit and Amtrak as it does for highways, even though buses and rail account for only a tiny fraction of travel. Even the value of highway funding is hampered by wasteful set-asides: $2 million per year for bee-friendly landscaping, $50 million per year to combat weeds, and expensive mandates that give unionized contractors a leg up on taxpayer-friendly, non-union shops." If history is a guide, one or more of these set-asides benefit the special interests of members, possibly in exchange for their votes. It's an old joke, but true: How do you tell when a politician is lying? When his lips are moving. Unlike those who voted for this legislation, take the time to read it yourself, along with the analysis. You will likely conclude they have swindled us again.
