Film featuring Beckett Dollard hit platform on Thanksgiving Day
By KRISTI GUSTAFSON BARLETTE
While Beckett Dollard’s friends snacked on Goldfish crackers, swung from the monkey bars at recess and practiced simple sight words in the classroom, the East Greenbush boy enjoyed a daily spread on a movie set, courtesy of craft services, and stepped into character when the producers yelled “action.” His schoolwork was done with an on-set teacher alongside one other student.
Dollard plays Jake in Netflix’s “The Noel Diary,” released on the streaming platform on Thanksgiving Day. In the film, novelist Jacob Turner meets a woman searching for her birth mother. Will an old diary unlock their pasts — and hearts, asks the teaser?
Turner is played by Justin Hartley, from “This is Us.” Dollard plays a young Turner in the many flashback scenes.
The East Greenbush first-grader has modeled since he was a toddler, appearing in ads for well-known brands such as GAP Kids, Target, Puma, Jordan, OXO Tot, Huggies and Crayola, but this was his first film.
“It’s huge,” says his mom, Natalie Dollard of her son who was 4 and about to graduate
pre-K when he filmed the movie. He’s now 6. “Toddlers have a tendency to be a bit unpredictable and children under 6 have very limited work hours, so there are very few opportunities out there like this one to begin with.”
While being on set is, of course, work, it doesn’t feel like that to Beckett. He runs around, plays with the other child actors and takes classes. For him, it’s all fun — and he doesn’t fully grasp why his life outside of school is, in some ways, different from his classmates.
He recently came home from school and said “Mom, did you know I’m famous? A third grader told me,” recalls Natalie Dollard. He followed that up by asking what “famous” means.
Beckett’s entertainment career started with the encouragement of a friend.
People constantly told the Dollards their son was cute. Natalie and her husband agreed, naturally (“everyone thinks their own baby is the cutest one ever, right,” she asks.)
Even when strangers were commenting on Beckett’s good looks, Natalie says she figured people were simply offering those compliments to be nice.
It wasn’t until the first couple of times the family had pictures taken by local photographers that they realized while most toddlers clam up (or downright refuse to participate) in front of a camera, Beckett was in his element. He was engaged and excited, rather than timid or shy. He wasn’t cranky, even when he was tired and he didn’t need to warm up in new situations.
“He was one of those unicorn toddlers that was always happy,” says his mom. “I think he was making up for those first three months when he cried 24 hours a day.”
After seeing the photos from the family shoot, a friend from college reached out to the
“I thought she was crazy, but we decided to send them an email with a few pictures, figuring we would never hear back and would just carry on with preschool and play dates,”
says. “The agency responded that they were interested in representing him less than 24 hours later.”
The Dollards soon received an email with information about Beckett’s first “go-see” with a client. He ended up booking that job at 2-anda-half and he’s been busy ever since.
This movie, though, was the best gig yet.
“Meeting my best friend, Baylen. He’s my movie brother. We got to have fun, play games and go to school together,” says Beckett excitedly. “We had our very own set teacher. Oh, and crafty. They have the BEST snacks. It was the most fun ever, except having to wear so much itchy warm clothes in summer.”
Despite “working” at a young age, he’s a regular kid who loves school (his favorite subject is math), friends and family. He takes Taekwondo and hopes to one day be a black belt.
“I am really lucky to be an actor and model. I have to work hard and focus but it’s also a lot of fun,” Beckett Dollard says. “I meet new best friends all the time and we get to play together when it’s not our turn. And I always get to buy myself a new toy or Robux after the shoot.”

After her second marriage came to an end, Melissa Gilbert, best known for her role as Laura Ingalls on the classic television show “Little House on the Prairie,” raced immediately into a new relationship and tried to recapture the freedom she once had as a young woman.
“I had Botox, recolored my hair, bought a Mustang convertible at the urging of my much younger French boyfriend, and joined the cast of ‘Dancing With the Stars’,” she said, “and I was very unhappy. My life was spiraling out of control.”
She refers to this as a time when she had to step back a bit before moving forward. “I guess I had to get some of that behavior out of my system, but I’ve learned from that experience.”
At this point in her life,
10 years after appearing on “Stars,” she no longer feels frustrated, upset and disappointed. “I’ve worked very hard to find this peaceful place in my heart. I’m grateful to have that and to be married to a man who is also calm and peaceful.”
One of the events that brought about this change was meeting actor Timothy Busfield, best known as the co-star in the iconic TV show “Thirtysomething” and the film “Field of Dreams.” “When we met, Tim was not looking for anyone and neither was I. We were both content to be on our own. The universe threw him into my path, and I into his, and here we are 10 years later happily married.”
Because of their work they decided, shortly after getting married, to move to New York City. They would occasionally go on drives in the Hudson Valley or check out real estate sites looking for a small cottage to buy, a place to escape when the pressures of the city might overwhelm them.
In January 2019, they found a rustic cottage on 14 acres in the Catskills that needed a lot of work. The two of them did much of the work themselves, and that expe-

Peanut Butter Pop-Up: Lessening Food Scarcity in the Community
The community volunteer organization Youth² has a vision for the holidays that includes peanut butter and other non-perishable foods. Many people in the Capital Region and beyond are affected by food scarcity and need items to fill their pantry shelves, especially during the holiday season.
Youth² is partnering with Shanna Goldman, the director of Oakwood Community Center in Troy, New York, to provide food for families in need in the cold days to come. It’s customary that 35-50 families come in once a week for food from the Oakwood pantry.
Many families are saying that there are shortages in the food banks of non-perishable goods. This event aims to help with that.
The pop-up is happening on Wednesday, December 14th from 3-6pm at 112 Spring Street. Youth² is accepting all donations of peanut butter, jelly, mayonnaise, tuna, beans, white rice, and macaroni and cheese. These items are to be funneled to Oakwood Community Center for distribution for families in need.

Blue Christmas Service
Please put on your calendar our Blue Christmas Service, Sunday, December 18th 4pm.
Stephentown Federated Church 1513 Garfield Road, Stephentown, NY 12168- Honoring life and loss in the holidays.
The Christmas season is a time of nostalgia. Memories come flooding in--those of love and loss, gratitude and grief. Blue Christmas honors the fact that many of us feel a sense of loss during this season— loss of relationship, loss of trust, loss of job, loss of health, loss of faith, the loss of joy.
Authentic spirituality does not hide this truth, but instead allows us the space for honesty, reflection, and community. No matter your circumstance, this is an open service of candlelight, songs, prayers, and hope. The community is welcome. Handicapped accessible.

Are you looking to help someone in your community remain living independently with a little assistance from you? We need your help!
Our volunteers can take someone to the doctors, grocery or other errands as well as visiting and calling. We have a simple orientation process. Call Heidi Buono, Rensselaer County Service Coordinator, at (518)366-9173 or Meredith Osta, Volunteer Coordinator, at (518)4562898, if you would like to volunteer. To learn more or donate to our agency, see Community Caregivers.org.

A 2015 study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration found that the number of all-electric homes had increased over the previous decade. In fact, the EIA study found that 25 percent of homes in the United States used only electricity. All-electric homes are generally considered more environmentally friendly because they lessen homeowners’ carbon footprint by reducing their need for fossil fuels like natural gas. Electric heat pumps, induction stoves and electric fireplaces are just some of the technologies that can be found in all-electric homes.
Though the design style of all-electric homes needn’t be modern, there’s no denying that the growing popularity of such homes makes them an option for homeowners with modern sensibilities.

Town of North Greenbush Christmas Parade & Starry Night Tree Lighting
Santa called to let us know he is coming to North Greenbush and he’s excited to see his little friends get ready for our
big parade on Saturday, December 3rd
The parade will line up at St. Jude’s parking lot and will kick-off at 6pm, heading down Brookside, to Main Ave and ending at Town Hall. Following the parade, we will all gather in the field next to town hall under the evening stars where the 2nd Annual Starry Night Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting will be held.
This moving ceremony will begin with special guest singers, celebrating the joy of the season while remembering our loved ones. It’s breathtaking to see all of the beautiful Starry Night Trees lit all at once and decorated so nicely by their families.
Then, we will get the children ready to meet Santa, share their wish list, get a picture and enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate. We are looking to make this years parade even BIGGER than last year with even more colorfully lit floats and characters.
Glendora Vegeterian Club
Hi folks, Thanksgiving was a good day to count our blessings. Let us start with number 1. The Universe, the grand, the grand, the glorious Universe. 2. You were born, and the chances were very slight. 3. You are alive and healthy. 4. You have food, clothing and a home. 5. You have freedom and
independence. 6. You are free of catastrophes, no house on fire, no weather catastrophes, no accidents or injuries, no robberies, no assaults. 7. You have stability in your finances, education, career. 8. You have a spouse, and you and your spouse have jobs.
Veterans Helping Veterans, a new vital call to you, is the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Support Project. Call 518-828-3610 for information.
Glendora is giving lessons in how to live to 94 as a vegan with no doctors, no medicine, no pain and no bills. The oldest confirmed person in the world was a woman in France named Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years and 164 days.
1. The barber asked, “Where are you going for your vacation?” The young man said, “Rome.” The barber told him he wouldn’t like Rome. “The beds are hard, the food is no good, and you will never get to see the Pope!”
The young man was disenchanted, but he went anyway. When he returned, the barber asked, “Where did you go for your vacation?”
The young man said, “I went to Rome; the beds were comfortable, the food was delicious, and I did get to see the Pope.” The barber said, “You got to see the Pope? What did the Pope say to you?” “He pat me on the head three times and said, ‘Where did you get that haircut?’”

And lately, many buyers are looking for all-electric homes.

Poestenkill Library Glows in Recognition of Donors
The Friends of the Poestenkill Library invite you to give a monetary holiday gift that will help the Library while honoring or remembering someone special. Each December, during our Holiday Lights Annual Appeal, we “Light up the Library” with strings of colorful lights representing the generous gifts received from donors. Often the gifts are tributes to friends or family who receive notices from the Library that someone has given in their honor.
These donations allow the Library to expand their collection, enhance their services, and offer special programs throughout the year. Donors of $100 are recognized with a candle, and donors of $75 are recognized with a wreath, in one of the Library’s many windows. Together, the lights, wreaths and candles turn the Library into a beautiful symbol of the generosity of the season. To be part of the Holiday Lights appeal, please stop by the Library or call 518-283-3721 to request a brochure with a gift form.
You are also welcome to mail a check, payable to Friends of the Poestenkill Library, to PO Box 305, Poestenkill, NY 12140. If you are giving your holiday gift in someone’s honor, please provide the name and address

Luminary Full Moon Walk
Grafton Lakes State Park will host their second ever luminary walk. Last year was such an amazing turn out that this year we have doubled the number of lights and the length of the trail! The weather might be frightful, but up at Grafton, we will be enjoying s’mores, hot chocolate, and a trail lit by luminary lanterns and the full moon!
Come as a couple or bring out the whole family. The self-led approximately ½ mile trail is perfect for a romantic stroll, mesmerizing the kids, or anything in-between. Enjoy the sounds of the holidays, a warm cup of hot chocolate, or roast a marshmallow over the fire. Dogs comfortable with crowds are welcome. Must be contained on a six-foot leash.
The event will be held on Friday, Dec 9th from 5-8:30pm. $5 per person, ages 5 and under free. Cash only!
No registration required. Want to attend the event for free? We are looking for volunteers to assist for half of the event and then enjoy the other half. Contact graftonlakesvolunteers@parks.ny.gov if you are interested!

North Greenbush Multi-Family Dwelling Moratorium
In November, North Greenbush held a public hearing related to a multi-family dwelling moratorium law. Fol lowing that public hearing at the town meeting, a mora torium was adopted. During this 12-month moratorium, North Greenbush should review the data and develop policies accordingly.
Housing vacancy rates for both rental & homeowner housing are at/near historic lows [US Census Bureau]. Per Fannie Mae, as of 2019, the U.S. was short 3.8 million housing units for sale or rent. Per a NY State Comptroller 2019 report, 44.8% of rents in Rensselaer County were above the affordability threshold and 21% above the

GILBERT
rience has inspired Gilbert to write her latest memoir “Back to the Prairie: A Home Remade, A Life Rediscovered.”
“I love the clean air of the Hudson Valley, the smell of the lakes, the colors of the trees, the beautiful change of seasons and just watching things come to life in the spring and bloom in the summer. The woods and wildlife are constantly trying to take back our property. That’s what nature does. We watch and care for the animals, the deer, the bears. We respect them. We love where we live. We love our neighbors, and I’m much happier here than I ever was in Hollywood.”
The personal values of the show “Little House on the Prairie” have always been important to Gilbert.
“My parents were both in show business and they instilled in me a groundedness to not get caught up with being a celebrity, and that show enhanced the simple qualities of taking care of your family and appreciating what you have. Here I am today in my 50s and I have chickens, and I’m happiest in my upstate home sitting in my recliner knitting. There’s a wonderful contentedness to my life today.”
When “Little House on the Prairie” began filming in 1973, Gilbert remembered it as a very tumultuous time in America. “We were still deep in the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War was winding down, there was a massive oil crisis, and Michael Landon, our show’s star, wanted those stories in the show. We had episodes on drug addiction, racism, chauvinism, anti-Semitism, nativism and anti-Native American sentiment. I think that’s why the show had such a comeback when we were locked down with COVID. People my age began to watch it once again as a type of comfort and came away im
severe housing cost burden threshold [Housing Af fordability in New York State]. In March 2022, NY Sen. Hinchey announced a $200 million budget proposal to increase the supply of local housing for purchase and for rent in upstate NY. The data indicates housing needs to be addressed.
Traffic is an often cited reason to limit housing, but I would rather have housing traffic which is infrequent than commercial traffic bottle necks. North Greenbush approved multiple commercial enterprises that will probably increase traffic issues.
Chick-fil-A locations in CA, CT, NC, WA, & WI all reported major traffic issues associated with stores in 2021/2022. Will North Greenbush’s Chick-fil-A snarl traffic like other locations? A Dunkin’ Donuts is near
pressed with how woke it was for its time.”
Landon was enormously influential in Gilbert’s life. “He guided me both professionally and personally. Our families were also very close. We even used to vacation together. I was always impressed with how he wanted the ‘Little House’ stories to open the viewers’ eyes to problems going on around us, and to hopefully change some of them.”
She said the cast and crew from that show, which ran from 1974 to 1983, were like a family. “We cared about each other including all our families. We traveled like a pack on location, a very tight knit group. We still stay in touch today and support each other in the good and the bad times.”
In her book, Gilbert writes about the amazing calm and peace she is experiencing today. “I no longer feel the pressure to fit into the mold of what people expect me to be. This is who I am and this is how I’m living my life today, and I hope you’re OK with it, but what other people think of me is none of my business.”
She said for much of her life she took for granted all the simple pleasures of her life, but no longer. “I’m most grateful today for all the beauty around me. It’s funny when Tim and I bought this house we thought we’d only come up here occasionally, but now we spend as much time as possible here and only go to New York (City) for fun, sushi and work.”

complete at the new traffic circle on Route 4. There will be 5 Dunkin Donuts between HVCC & Rte 9/20 - a 5-mile stretch of road.
Will this new Dunkin’ Donut snarl traffic at the circle as one local resident suggested to me?
Rather than treating development on an ad-hoc basis, North Greenbush should update the comprehensive plan. Ideally a revised plan will encourage mixed-use spaces with retail on the first floor and residential spaces above. Per the National Association of Realtors, both younger and older generations desire walkable commu nities. Multi-family dwellings are essential for walkable communities.
