Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack SCHODACK - I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This report, published every month since I took office in 2016, is an example of my commitment to keeping Schodack residents informed about town government news and community events. During November, the Town Board unanimously adopted the 2022 Town Budget that stays below the state property tax cap and maintains essential services such as public safety, emergency medical services, water and sewer, street maintenance, libraries, and parks and recreation. We also adopted resolutions authorizing the Town Supervisor to execute intermunicipal agreements with Rensselaer County for the design

and construction of water improvements and sewer connections to the town’s Consolidated Water District #101 (Route 9) and Sewer District #6, respectively. These projects are being supported by funds made available through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Additionally, the Town Board approved the 2022 Transfer Station Rules, Regulations and Fee Schedule that includes no price increases for the upcoming year. Gary Ziegler was also appointed as Town Building Inspector/ Code Enforcement Officer. Congratulations to the Maple Hill Boys Soccer team who concluded their terrific 2021 season as NYS Section 2 Champions, North Region Champions, and NYS Class C Finalist. Additional congrats to Eli Charlebois (MVP), Landon Flatch and Gavin Haller for being named Patroon Conference First Team All-Stars and Dan Gillespie

Rensselaer County Kicks Off Freedom Box Drive to Send Supplies to Our Troops Overseas DECEMBER 2, 2021

An upstream solution to a downstream problem Alliance preserves wetlands that help mitigate flooding By KENNETH C. CROWE II

RENSSELAER CTY - Rensselaer County kicked off a drive to fill Freedom Boxes that will be shipped to our troops serving overseas. Chairman of the Legislature Michael Stammel made the first donation last week. The drive, organized by our local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers, will collect food items, toiletries, black socks, insect repellant, and other related items needed by our troops serving abroad. The collection box is located at the 3rd floor entrance to the County Office Building and donations will be accepted through the first week of December. Donations to cover the cost of shipping these donated items overseas are also needed. Anyone wishing to learn more, or make a financial contribution to this effort can email: Capitalregion2bsm@ gmail.com, or mail a check to Blue Star Mothers of America PO Box 243 Delmar, NY 12054

To follow ecologist Jeff Briggs into the 350-acre Poestenkill Community Forest is to hike along a trail that spans brooks, crosses over small wetlands and winds past bogs deep into the Rensselaer Plateau to reach the hidden Big Beaver Bog — a key to climate resilience for everyone who dwells below in the Hudson River Valley. The 23-acre Big Beaver Bog serves as a giant sponge, soaking up the rain to protect those below its 1,600-foot-high location on the plateau from cascading water after a heavy rainfall. The plateau ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 feet high. “It’s like a sponge. It holds the water and lets it out slowly,” said Briggs, a member of the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance board of directors. Standing along the bog, Fred McCagg, the Nassau highway superintendent and anoth-

Rosewood Gardens, the East Greenbush nursing home that needed the state to step in two weekends ago due to a nursing crisis, is in the process of selling off a minority stake in the facility to a new part-owner. An application to sell a 9.9 percent stake in Rosewood Gardens to Israel Frankel was filed last year with the state Department of Health. State and local officials and emergency crews had to step in at Rosewood two Saturdays ago after a nursing shortage caused after the overnight nursing staff left the 80-bed facility after the morning nurses failed to show up. Navigating Family Landmines: A Holiday Gathering Survival Guide STEPHENTOWN - Do you sometimes feel that pit in your stomach around holiday gatherings—and it has nothing to do with the rich foods or treats? The holidays are a time of celebration, family, and fun. They can also be a time where disagreements surface, old fights are rehashed, or stories told we’d rather forget. When politics and masks/vaccine practices can divide a family as much as a nation, it’s helpful to have a few tricks to navigate the landmines. Join our workshop open to the community on how to steer clear of the conversations that feel potentially explosive, if not relationally unsafe. Pastor Chris Garrison leads this discussion at the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road on Sunday December 12th at 4pm. All are welcome. Handicapped accessible. Masks required.

Blue Christmas Service: Honoring Life and Loss in the Holidays STEPHENTOWN - The Christmas season has an amazing ability to trigger nostalgic memories—both of happy and sad, gratitude and grief. The Blue Christmas tradition honors the fact that for many of us we experience all kinds of loss—the loss of relationships, loss of trust, loss of jobs, loss of health, loss of faith, the loss of joy. Authentic spirituality does not hide this truth, and instead allows us the space for honesty, reflection, community and practices of support. No matter your circumstance, this is an open welcoming service

of candlelight, songs, prayers, and hope. Pastor Chris Garrison leads the service at the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road on Sunday December 19th at 4pm. All are welcome. Handicapped accessible. Masks required.

We have been blessed over the years by many warm-hearted generous donors. It is an excellent project for groups, organizations, and places of employment who would like to sponsor a family together. Gifts need to be in the store by early December, so it is important to plan now. Nancy Rockwell, our volunteer coordinator may be reached at the store (5i8-674-4048) for particulars. Hoosick, Nassau, Petersburgh, Pittstown, Poestenkill, Sand Lake and Stephentown. The plateau stretches from Columbia County on the south straight north to the county line with Washington County. The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance has preserved nearly 13,000 acres of the plateau’s 118,000 acres of forest. There are more than 3,000 acres of wetlands across the plateau. The alliance’s goal is to preserve more land to help maintain the continuous forestlands. In conserving the land, the alliance is ensuring climate resilience that will help protect not only the communities on the plateau but those at lower elevations. The brooks that begin at the Big Beaver Bog flow down to the Poesten Kill, which twists and turns through various towns before ending at the Hudson River in Troy. Briggs said the bog holds on to the water that would otherwise rush toward Troy. “The forest and the bogs all play a role in holding back the floods,” Briggs said. Jim Bonesteel, the executive director of the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, said that as development pressures continue, the alliance wants to see conservation measures taken that will protect the local environment, improve air quality and rise to the challenges of providing climate resilience. The alliance has already raised $1.6 million toward its $2 million goal as it nears the end of the first year of the three-year campaign. “The campaign will support the acquisition of important forestland on the Rensselaer Plateau and help establish an endowment for long-term land management,” according to the goals established for the fundraising drive. There’s a six-minute video about the campaign online. Alliance leaders were heartened to see that during the depths of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021, people found their way to the plateau’s trails. They said families and individuals came out into the forests to explore and spend time in nature and were able to do so safely. Those who ventured into the forest took advantage of its connected trails, wetlands and waterways, which is what the campaign has set out to preserve and expand. Information about the capital campaign and the Rensselaer Plateau is available at the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance website, at www.rensselaerplateau.org. CONTINUED FROM 3

shortage that weekend, is currently undergoing an investigation into the issue. Rosewood is currently owned by two individuals and one limited liability company, according to documents filed with the health department, with the largest stakes owned by a woman named Ruth Hirsch and a company called Inter-Ocean Family. Each own 37.5 percent of the company’s shares. The second-largest shareholder, Louis “Josh” Gellis, owns the remaining 25 percent of Rosewood. Gellis is selling nearly half of his shares — a 9.9 percent stake in Rosewood — to Frankel. Gellis could not be reached for comment. It is unclear if Frankel was behind the $8 million purchase of the Rosewood Gardens building and property earlier this year. Frankel, who is believed to live in New Jersey, has not responded to several efforts by the Times Union to contact him. Rosewood’s administrator, Shannon McHale, also did not respond to a request for comment. It is also unclear if the sale of the minority stake to Frankel will be impacted by the DOH’s investigation into the staffing issues at Rosewood. The ownership transfer application was filed with the state just over a year ago. “That notice is currently under department review,” DOH spokeswoman Samantha Fuld said. She referred additional questions about the company to the owners. Rosewood Gardens has been the subject of 136 complaints dating back to 2017 — a much higher rate than the state average. AROUND TROY YOUR LOCAL NEWS & ADVERTISING SECTION Cross-examination gets heated Murder defendant spars in court with alleged accomplice in 2017 killings By ROBERT GAVIN

It was a scene that even the most over-the-top courtroom drama would have rejected as too bizarre: a man accused of four murders cross-examining his alleged accomplice. But that was the scene Monday in a Rensselaer County courtroom after witness Justin Mann, testifying for the prosecution, implicated defendant James White as the person who stabbed two adults and two children to death in a Lansingburgh home on Dec. 21, 2017. White is serving as his own lawyer in his retrial — a decision that turned much of the cross-examination into little more than an argument over who was primarily responsible for one of the most brutal crimes in recent Capital Region history. “Was anyone standing over (the victims) with a weapon?” White asked at one point. “Yeah — you!” Mann said. Mann, 28, pleaded guilty to the murders and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. He testified that White placed a knife to his neck before they entered the basement at 158 Second Ave. in Lansingburgh. Mann said White told him to help him or he would kill Mann and his family. An exasperated Mann displayed, at times, a foggy memory during White’s cross-examination. The witness asked Judge Debra Young why she was allowing White to represent himself. Mann said to White that the victims were people White knew. “Why would I kill my own people?” the defendant responded. “You’re sick!” Mann answered.

Mann repeatedly told White he could not understand or recall details about what the defendant was asking. He responded to White at times with his own questions. “Why did you kill ‘em?” Mann asked White. “ ... I know what you did, man.” Mann also called White a “bozo” and told him more than once, “Let’s get real.” “Tell the people what really happened,” Mann said. “ ... You used me.” Mann’s account of the killings largely mirrored his testimony at White’s first trial in 2020, but this time the witness suggested a debt over a marijuana deal was a contributing factor. White suggested that Mann had changed his testimony after the first trial, which ended in April 2020 in a mistrial complicated by the nascent COVID-19 pandemic. Mann did not serve as his own counsel in that proceeding. That night, Mann testified, he and White took bikes on a Capital District Transportation Authority bus in Schenectady and rode to Troy. Mann said that at White’s instruction, he knocked on the door and claimed a bike had been stolen. According to Mann, once inside the home, White instructed him to help tie up three victims: Brandi Mells, 22; Shanta Myers, 36; and Myers’ 5-year-old daughter, Shanise Myers. Mann said White placed socks in the victims’ mouths, took a knife and stabbed each one in the neck. Mann said Jeremiah Myers, 11, who showed up later after playing basketball, was killed the same way. As in the first trial, Mann testified that White killed the victims using a knife that Mann compared to the blade used by Michael Myers, the fictional killer in the horror movie “Halloween.”

PAUL BUCKOWSKI / TIMES UNION

James White cross-examined his alleged accomplice, Justin Mann, in his murder trial in Troy on Monday.

Mann became so agitated Monday that he cursed at White repeatedly, which led the judge to call an early lunch break. In 2019, Mann pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder, as well as to a robbery in Queens and an assault. Assistant District Attorneys Matthew Hauf and Cheryl McDermott contend that White, joined by Mann, stabbed the victims to steal electrical accessories. The victims’ bodies were found five days later. Jurors were shown photos from the crime scene Monday, including images of victims bound at their legs. Members of the victims’ families were in the court throughout the proceeding. In his opening statement earlier this month, White said the evidence all pointed to Mann. Young appointed a standby counsel, Adam Staier, to assist White.

Starlyn D’Angelo, executive director of the Hart Cluett Museum, details this year’s annual Greens Show, which starts Thursday.

The Hart Cluett Museum is swinging open its doors to the public in December to show off the 12 rooms in the Marble House. It will be decorated for the 65th Holiday Greens Show after just hosting exterior decorations last year in response to pandemic restrictions. This year’s show will run from Thursday to Sunday, Dec. 5. The museum is instituting timed admissions to control crowd exposure to COVID-19 and to simplify its admissions policy for its major fundraiser. “We need to restrict the number of people to 15 in a group,” Starlyn D’Angelo, museum executive director, said. The tours will be timed and guided. Participants will be required to wear a mask. Reservations may be made at the museum website under the Green Shows tab at www.hartcluett.org.

“Our goal is to ensure safety so we can still offer the Greens Show,” D’Angelo said. As part of that effort, the museum has set admission Please see SHOW 30 prices to $15 per adult and

Athlete of the Week by Tyler Michaels

Stephen Koval • Scholar Athlete •

AVERILL PARK - This week’s Scholar Athlete is Stephen Koval. Stephen is a catcher on the Varsity baseball team, and plays Varsity golf in the fall. Although the baseball team does not have any official captains Stephen does his best to lead his team through their season. Stephen began playing baseball when he was five years old when his parents signed him up for T-ball. Stephen fell in love with the sport, and has been playing baseball for 13 years. To prepare for their season, Stephen’s team holds off-season workouts and practices. Stephen attends as many of these sessions as he can and practices on his own to ensure that he is ready for his school season. Stephen’s favorite part about his sport is his team. Stephen noted that he relishes the opportunity to work with his wonderful teammates. Stephen also said that the competition the other teams provide gives his team a great challenge and chance to improve. In his freshman year, Stephen made the Varsity team. Although he did not play much initially, Stephen worked hard to make the starting lineup and had a three hit game against Schenectady, helping propel his team into sectionals. In his junior year, Stephen won the best hitter award for his team. This year, Stephen hopes to improve his stats and help his team win a sectional championship. In addition to his athletic success, Stephen succeeds academically. Stephen has a 3.8 GPA while taking a difficult course load, including Advanced Placement Government and Politics and Advanced Placement Calculus. To help balance school and sports, Stephen avoids procrastinating and uses his time as best he can to avoid stress during athletic events. Stephen is also a member of the robotics club and the National Honor Society. In his spare time, Stephen enjoys snowboarding, playing video games, and technology. Stephen’s coaches also help him improve in his sport by keeping Stephen motivated and boosting his confidence in his abilities. “They make me want to keep getting better,” Stephen noted. Stephen’s parents act as his role models by inspiring him to constantly work hard. It is because of this that Stephen truly puts his all into everything that he does. Stephen would advise a younger athlete to “work very hard and listen to what others have to say. You can always learn something from someone, no matter how experienced they are.” Next year, Stephen plans on playing baseball at college and hopes to become an engineer. We wish Stephen the best as he finishes his senior year and prepares for college.

Outreach van helps meet needs of city's unsheltered residents Nonprofit workers bring hot meals, clothing and provide a connection to services ByLINE: SHANIECE HOLMES BROWN

ALBANY - On a recent afternoon, Tiana Minervini and Shelley Rettinger, from the Troy-based Joseph's House & Shelter, prepared for another shift of bringing food and supplies to people without homes in Albany. In late October, I joined them for their street outreach aboard a brand new van during the afternoon shift to observe the work they do. The mission of the shelter was evident as I glanced around. There were shelves with bins full of assorted gloves, hats, scarves, jackets, shoes and even ready-to-eat meals. At the first stop, an unsheltered veteran talked about how tired he was of living without a home. He described how cold it gets at night sleeping on the streets in downtown Albany. He explained how bad it made him feel after not being able to take a shower in over a month. He asked for a new blanket from the van to replace his old one that had become tattered from him sleeping on concrete every night. His experience has pushed him to try to get help and find a way to change his life. "I need everything. I need a new life. A redo, restart, or something," he said to the van staff. He expressed that although he hates the condition he lives in, he is not quite ready to take that leap to make a change. But that did not mean that he didn't want to. Acknowledging that, a staffer responded assuredly, "Maybe we can try again tomorrow." Founded in 1983, Joseph's House & Shelter, Inc. is based in Troy and has spent almost 40 years providing support services to residents in the Capital Region. Its mission is to provide nonjudgmental services to end homelessness. The nonprofit's new outreach van was recently purchased with an Emergency Solutions COVID grant in October provided by the city of Albany. In street outreach, clothing and food are distributed, and the staff offer referrals and applications for housing

placement and medical care. In addition to the outreach van, Joseph's House also offers emergency shelter and support services for youth, families, and individuals who are homeless. Minervini, associate director for the outreach, and Rettinger, director of homeless services, explained that they had regular clients with whom they speak and have built relationships over the 12 years they have worked in street outreach. Some they have known for months, others for many years. Regardless of how long or where someone has been living, they are treated with the same humility and kindness. "We are really a constant in their lives," Rettinger said. "We sit and talk to them," said Minervini. "We like to hear their stories. Sometimes, we're really their only sober and consistent support. They love us, most of them." The day I was on the van, every person receiving services had a different background, but they each shared an overwhelming desire to have a better life. As they talked with each client, the van staff listened closely and gave their undivided attention to each individual's needs with locked eye contact. "We are the link to other services and a lot of times we are the ones going out in the community to either help make that phone call, make the appointment, or set up a cab so they can make it to the appointment," Minervini said. Minervini explained the importance of consistency in their work. "We try to see them every day. Our main focus is to work with people that aren't sheltered because they are not getting their services from everyone else," she said. In some areas of the city, there is high demand for the van's services. To keep from being overwhelmed, another outreach van covers areas outside the city of Albany, including Colonie, Menands and Bethlehem. To meet current needs, the outreach van's hours were extended from eight hours to 10 hours daily. In 2020, street outreach services were provided to more than 1,000 unsheltered people in Albany and Rensselaer counties. Clients were approximately 73 percent

male and 25 percent female, with ages ranging from 18 to 72. Over half were Caucasian, 40 percent African American, 8 percent Hispanic or Latino, and 1 percent American Indian or Alaskan Native.

Northeast Problem Gambling Resource Center CAPITAL DISTRICT - The addition of mobile sports betting in New York State has brought access to gambling to everyone’s pocket. Anyone in New York with a cell phone can now gamble 24/7 from anywhere. With the increase in access to gambling opportunities will inevitably come an increase in individuals, families and communities impacted by negative consequences. In response to increased access to gambling in NYS, NYCPG has launched a brand new, solution-focused resource in NYS that’s designed to highlight all of the ways New Yorkers can work together on this cause to reduce these negative consequences. StrongerThanYouThinkNY.org has something for everyone, whether you’re in need of treatment, have a loved one struggling, or want to be a part of the solution on a community level. Problem gambling can impact anyone, and its effects go far beyond the individual. Relationships, employment, finances, and mental health all take a hit when gambling is no longer entertainment. Often the symptoms are invisible to others until they can’t be hidden any longer. It’s never too late to get help or become an advocate for this cause. For help with problem gambling, please reach out to the Northeast Problem

Gambling Resource Center at 518-801-1491 or email us at NortheastPGRC@ NYProblemGambling.org

The Guide to Your Best Lived Home.

Pet-friendly fabrics to try at home

Maintaining a pet-friendly household requires contending with a certain measure of dirt, dander and fur. It’s often a sacrifice made for the immeasurable benefits that come from having companion animals. Even when their owners are especially careful, pets can do some damage around the house. Homeowners can mitigate potential problems by choosing largely pet-proof furniture fabrics. • Woven fabrics: Fabrics that have visual texture or subtle patterns can help disguise stains and make pet hair less noticeable. Opt for a color similar to a pet’s fur color to further camouflage shed hair. Pet owners should know that cats may get their claws stuck in certain woven fabrics. • Leather and faux leather: Many pet owners like that leather and faux leather products are nonabsorbent and

resistant to stains, odors and punctures. In addition, fur won’t cling to leather and similar fabrics easily, making them a better choice for those with dander and fur allergies. • Microfiber: Microfiber is tightly woven, making it a good option for durable, high-end elegance. Dirt and dust cannot penetrate the fabric, and cats are less likely to get their claws into this fabric. Some microfibers are odor- and stain-resistant as well, though spills will need to be mopped up quickly. One concern with microfiber is the material tends to hold onto pet fur. As a result, owners may spend ample time vacuuming shed hair. • Synthetic materials: Polyester, acrylic or nylon materials

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PFAS? Parts-Per-Trillion? What’s the Big Deal? PFAS compounds are a family of man-made chemicals including PFOA (polyfluorooctane acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctanesufonic acid). PFAS compounds are “forever” compounds that are extremely difficult to breakdown and do not biodegrade. PFOA and PFOS have been linked to the following diseases in humans: Thyroid cancer and disfunction, kidney cancer and disfunction, testicular cancer, liver dysfunction and increasing the levels of serum cholesterol (leading to heart disease including heart attacks and strokes), high blood pressure in pregnant women (preeclampsia). PFAS Compounds have been linked to immune system dysfunction and is thought to exacerbate autoimmune existing health issues. Studies of health effects from PFAS compounds are limited and ongoing; however, as more studies are funded scientists are discovering more ways in which PFAS compounds cause harm. The state of California having funded research into the health effects of PFAS compounds set the drinking water limit for PFOA to 5.1ppt (parts per trillion) and PFOS to 6.5ppt, well below New York State’s limit of 10ppt. Moreover, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is now petitioning the state to reduce levels further to 0.007ppt for PFOA and 1.0ppt for PFOS as a result of their latest studies showing detrimental effects at extremely low levels. Unless your home is fortunate enough to have had results of ‘Non-Detect’ your family is at risk; which one will you and your family get? Personally, I know which ones I have; unfortunately, I reside in one of the homes that has been unknowingly using contaminated water from my well. After countless tests and mounting medical costs only to discover that my illnesses may be linked to the water in my home; I feel violated, the sanctity of my home and the safety within its boundaries was taken. Often, I wonder if my neighbors suffer similar unexplained changes in their health. Paula Heilmann, Poestenkill

I second Ms. Hoffman’s Letter of 11/25/21! Ms. Hoffman in her letter of 11/25/21 makes a valid point in my opinion! I heartily second her suggestion! The Advertiser long before its current ownership , functioned as a local source for many of us, of services , as well as opinions on LOCAL issues that affected us. In my earlier letter dated 6/11/21 I asked a few questions about the Tribune Content Agency, (after reviewing that site which does contain a wide variety of sources), how the columns are chosen, cost if any etc. I also asked how and who chooses these and whether there was a rotation planned for printing others. I would have asked some of that in an email to the publisher , but there was and is none listed on the masthead. I also had some suggestions that might have been entertained to make it more adaptable to us locally . For whatever reason , my letter was NEVER printed, leaving me to make my own assumptions about why , especially given the continuing plea to “send us your thoughts regarding our opinion pages”. Whatever the case, i do think that we all have ample opportunity to access a wide variety of NATIONAL opinion pages if we choose to subscribe to the Times Union or other papers, as well as web sites, etc. Based on that , I vote that the Advertiser convert the opinion page , keeping the letters to editor section of course , and continue to provide access for local merchants and issues. Ken Scallon , Nassau

Letters do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff of The Advertiser, and we cannot vouch for the accuracy of the contents of these columns.

North Greenbush helped in Defreestville I pleasantly enjoyed looking at a mound of dirt last weekend at the end of California Ave in the Defreestville area of North Greenbush. The October 21, 2021 edition of the Advertiser published a Letter to the Editor about the sewage pump needing attention. I also mentioned this sewage pump at the October 2021 North Greenbush town meeting. During the November 2021 town meeting, North Greenbush Highway Superintendent, Mark Premo, mentioned the town dumped 8 loads of dirt in this area addressing the erosion near the sewage pump. Mr. Premo also mentioned that the pipe at the bottom of the hill was replaced as well as work on the pump occurred. Residents in the area emailed me about how happy that this situation was resolved. I am glad that Mr. Premo and his crews could help out residents in North Greenbush. Michael Myer, North Greenbush

Kenosha Football Analogy A lot of people are looking at the Kyle Rittenhouse jury decision as a victory. I don’t exactly see it that way. For me it seems like a draw, like we’ve been on defense from the beginning and we’ve simply managed to not lose ground. Like many Americans, I see this decision as testimony in a much bigger trial. With football as an analogy, this game began with The Left having possession of the ball, at a time of their choosing, somewhere deep in our territory. They would usually have their most experienced players on the field in a stadium filled with cheering fans, handpicked referees and their best former players as commentators. Our team would usually consist of whoever happens to be in the area at the time with no experience whatsoever. We would have the rule book on our side but The Left would totally ignore it because they are convinced that there is no one to enforce the rules. If we happen to stop their advancement at the spot where that day’s game began, that just marks the point at which they will begin the game the next time. As I see it there have only been a few times in our history when our side started the game with possession of the ball and even then we were not deep in their territory. One of those times was when Senator Joe McCarthy had possession of the ball. The next possession was by Ronald Reagan and the most recent was of course Donald Trump. President Trump had the benefit of having the best coach of all time on his team in the form of Rush Limbaugh. From this day forward we have to stay on offense. We have to pick the best quarterback, along with the most experienced bench, cheerleaders, referees, commentators and coaches. We must pack the stadium with our fans in order to show the world that we are the champions of justice. The Kenosha rioters along with their financial and political supporters must be investigated and punished if we are to deter situations like this from ever happening again. David Crawmer, North Greenbush

No Taxpayer Dollars for Appeal of Court’s Decision After being told by the State Supreme Court that the Town of Sand Lake’s approval of a party barn in Barnes Road was “incomplete, arbitrary, and contrary to the requirements of SEQRA,” the town appears poised to spend

our taxpayer dollars to defend this nuisance. The Town’s comprehensive plan says “The Town should review its current regulations on home occupations to ensure that they are “user-friendly” and provide effective safeguards against excessive traffic, noise, improper disposal of hazardous materials, and visual blight in residential areas.” The party barn would produce excessive traffic, noise and disrupt farming activities in this largely agricultural neighborhood. Some of the farms have their house on one side of the road and the farm on the other side. Imagine how difficult it would be to do routine farming chores with dozens of catering trucks and partygoers unfamiliar with this narrow two lane road clog it up or worse, speed through it drunk. The Town has provided no explanation of how it would provide traffic, littering or noise control. It hasn’t explained who in the town will respond on a Saturday night when things get out of control. Why, then, would the Town support this terrible proposal? Regina and Joseph Winnicki, West Sand Lake

Beware NYSDEC ‘Weasel Words’ on 8 December 2021 “Weasel words” are defined as “words or statements that are intentionally ambiguous or misleading,” and no better example of the use of “weasel words” to mislead and gull the unsuspecting in Poestenkill can be found than in the slick, professional propaganda put out recently by the DEC entitled “PROTECTING POESTENKILL’S DRINKING WATER AND INVESTIGATING PFAS CONTAMINATION, Two Public Availability Sessions Scheduled for Dec. 8, 2021,” where under the heading “Potential Source Investigations - Waste Management Transfer Station,” we were informed that a sample from the water supply well located at the transfer station was collected and analyzed for PFAS compounds in September and “No exceedances of drinking water standards were found.” Which means that yes, PFOA or PFOS were found in the well, but they don’t want us to really know that, because if PFOA is in that well, it raises the ugly question of exactly how it got there, a question the answer to which is troublesome for the DEC and Poestenkill, as well, so they slough it off by saying “no exceedances,” instead, which is how lawyers and politicians talk, using those kind of weasel words to mislead. True public health professionals responsible to the public for protecting and safeguarding their health and well-being do not mislead the public by lying to them, and the DEC and Poestenkill are not public health professionals by a long shot. Which brings us to the DEC propaganda statement that “The New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Health (DOH), and the Rensselaer County Department of Health (RCDOH), are working together to protect the public health and environment of the Poestenkill community.” Huh? Since when? What a patently ridiculous statement that is because if the DEC, DOH, and the RCDOH had been doing their duty to work together to protect the public health and environment of the Poestenkill community, there would be no PFOA in our drinking water today, period. Paul Plante, Poestenkill

OPINION Harris v. Buttigieg Would Be The GOP's Dream Primary By Rich Lowry

The GOP has had plenty of reason for good cheer in recent months. Nothing can compare, though, with the glad tidings of a potential showdown between Vice President Kamala Harris and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to be Biden's successor in 2024 should he decide not to run for reelection. Surely, there would be other serious candidates in that circumstance, but there is no doubt that Harris and Buttigieg would be high on the list of potential contenders, as various journalistic outfits have noted over the past week. As it happens, they exemplify the contemporary Democratic Party's electoral deficiencies, while

bringing their own f lagrant personal political weaknesses to the equation. I f t h i s i s r e a l ly t h e choice Democrats would face should Biden decline to run, they better hope he defies age, bounces back to robust political health, and is prepared to serve again well into his 80s. Harris flamed out in the 2020 Democratic nomination well before the Iowa caucuses, unable to settle on a message or political identity. Her staff was obsessed with the progressive hothouse of Twitter, which is a powerful device for creating a false sense of what real voters, even Democratic primary voters, care about. As vice president, she's basically picked up where her desultory campaign

left off. In the latest USA Today/Suffolk University poll, Harris had a dismal 28% approval rating. It's difficult to rate that low without getting indicted or suffering some other embarrassing scandal. Her allies, of course, complain that she's being treated unfairly because she's a woman of color. This fixation on race and gender plays much better with the left-wing activist class than with the public. The simpler explanation for Harris' woes is that she's a below-average politician serving under an unpopular president. Pete Buttigieg has had a happier tenure. With his surprising success in the 2020 Democratic primary, he bootstrapped himself into a Cabinet position and is now enjoying a windfall

of resources thanks to the infrastructure bill. He embodies, to a fault, the party's growing strength among college-educated whites. He's smo ot h , c r e dent i a le d , hy per-a r ticu late a nd a quick study who knows enough -- sometimes just enough -- to charm and impress journalists and other white-collar creative types. If a management consultant were to design a progressive white Democrat in a bottle, the result would look a lot like Buttigieg, himself a former management consultant. It's become increasingly clear, though, that the Democratic Party's new base among college-educated voters is a trap if it is pursued to the exclusion of an appeal to working-class

voters. The party's poor standing w ith non-college-educated voters has begun to show up in eroding support among Latinos, a constituency that was presumed to be a key pillar of the Obama-crafted "coalition of the ascendant." A successful post-Biden Democratic future is more likely to be found in the likes of New York Mayor-elect Eric Adams than Harris or Buttigieg. He is an African American former cop w ith a h a r d-k no c k s up br i n ging that gives him working-class street cred. He knows that woke bromides aren't the way to appeal to African American voters, who put him over the top in the Democratic primary. He's a standard progressive in many respects, but

he has proven immune to fashionable left-wing causes. He not only defused a hot-button cultural issue -- namely, crime -- he campaigned on it and made it a strength, an ability that most national Democrats have lost as the party has moved left since 2016. It's far too early to know how his City Hall tenure will actually turn out, but Adams has the qualities and approach that, in theory, could be fruitful for Democrats nationally. Meanwhile, even if the GOP is on a roll at the moment, it shouldn't get its hopes up. At the end of the day, a 2024 Democratic primary dominated by Harris and Buttigieg is probably too good to be true. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

SHOW CONTINUED FROM 7

free admission for ages 16 and younger. The theme for the Greens Show is “Children’s Holiday Storybooks.” An interactive storybook highlights the character who gives a nod to Samuel Wilson, the inspiration for Uncle Sam. D’Angelo said it’s important to carry on the tradition of the Greens Show as it marks its 65th anniversary of using real greens and flowers for decoration. It is considered one of the largest, if not the largest, shows of its type in the Capital Region. The Greens Show usually attracts thousands of visitors during its annual four-day run. The Marble House at 59 State St. is part of the museum’s complex. The 19th-century mansion was a prime location for

filming this summer by HBO’s “The Gilded Age.” The nine-part series will air beginning Jan. 24. The museum staff assisted in research for the series, while its building added to the 19th-century atmosphere for the series. The Troy Victorian Stroll is traditionally held on the last day of the Greens Show. The Hart Cluett Museum works with the Van Rensselaer Garden Club to put on the annual festival. The Greens Show debuted in 1956. Decorating starts the day after Thanksgiving and usually continues up to the last minute before the show opens exactly a week after the holiday. The Thursday show is open from noon to 9 p.m. The show Friday through Sunday, Dec. 5, opens daily at noon and closes at 5 p.m.
