Bunny suit wager ends sweetly Customer buys, then donates 400 pints of Stewart’s ice cream to those in need By KENNETH C. CROWE II
It was with good humor that Paul Webber went up to the Stewart’s Shop counter on Nov. 15 to order 400 pints of ice cream. Webber was taking shop manager Andy Basile up on his public offer to wear a pink bunny suit from “A Christmas Story” if the store surpassed 500 pints of ice cream sold. Webber’s purchase would push the store over the goal and reach 738 pints. “It started out as a joke,” Webber said Thursday at the 1811 Columbia Tpke. (routes 9 and 20) store near I-90 Exit 11 where he purchases his favorite flavors of Peanut Butter Pandemonium and Mint Chip in pints. “It’s comical.” “What are you going to do with 400 pints of ice cream?” Webber said was the response from his wife Samantha at their Valatie home. They have five children. The pints were on sale at two for $5 instead of the
usual price of $3.79 apiece, said Basile, who was in the bunny suit Thursday. That makes it $1,000 worth of ice cream that won’t fit into the typical kitchen freezer. Basile estimates a typical customer might buy six to 10 pints during a sale to stock up. Webber, who says the only ice cream he devours is from Stewart’s, decided to donate the pints, the equivalent of 50 gallons, to a local shelter. Webber and his Valatie-based family company, Fix Family Enterprises, a septic company, support community organizations. Freezer space remains a challenge; Stewart’s is helping out with locating recipients. “We are always humbled by our customers’ generosity, especially now, in the midst of Holiday Match season. We applaud Paul and his kind efforts to help local shelters and sweeten their holiday season with some Stewart’s ice cream,” said Erica Komoroske, director of public affairs for Stewart’s Shops. McLaughlin indicted on two felony counts over alleged theft of campaign funds By KENNETH C. CROWE II, AND BRENDAN J. LYONS
Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin stands accused of misusing campaign funds and falsifying campaign finance filings after a judge last Wednesday unsealed an indictment emerging from a long-running investigation by the state attorney general’s office and the FBI. McLaughlin, a Republican, was
indicted on two felony counts, grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing. The state attorney general’s probe began as an investigation of his 2017 campaign for county executive and also examined his financial dealings when he was a member of the state Assembly. McLaughlin allegedly stole $5,000 in funds from his campaign account on Nov. 21, 2017 — just weeks after winning election
to his county post — and then falsely reported the expense in campaign documents filed with the state Board of Elections. According to the charges, McLaughlin wrote a check from his campaign account to Hudson Valley Strategies, a consulting firm owned and operated by his closest confidant, Richard W. Crist, who is the county’s director of operations. Crist allegedly deposited the check in his firm’s bank account

and then drafted a new check — for $3,500 — that he brought to McLaughlin’s former campaign treasurer, Jennifer R. Polaro, who had previously worked as McLaughlin’s chief of staff in the state Assembly. Crist, according to the indictment, delivered the payment to Polaro at a State Police barracks in Sand Lake. At the time, Polaro and McLaughlin had recently had a falling out; she claimed that he

contact Stewart’s corporate headquarters if they would like some of the ice cream. CONTINUED FROM 3 Webber’s 400 pints lifted the Schodack store to third place in the company during the promotion as it sold 738 pints. First place went to the store on South Street in Mechanicville with 1,491 pints sold, followed by 822 pints at Davidson Drive in Wilton. For Barb Kay, the assistant manager, who rang up the 400 pints when Webber came in, it was a personal best and may possibly be a company record for most pints sold in a single transaction. Kay knows Webber from when she worked at the Valatie store. “I thought he was joking at first. He’s a good guy. He’s a sweetheart,” said Kay. She added that he cares about helping women and children, so she wasn’t surprised when he donated the ice cream. Webber said he learned from his father Bob Fix that it’s important to provide great service to customers and to give back to the community. The offer of Basile dressed in the bunny suit was the spark. “I like having fun with the promotions. It gets a lot of chuckles in the shop,” said Basile, whose picture was snapped by several customers Thursday. “It’s been an interesting experience. It snowballed into this,” Webber said. Basile isn’t picking the flavors that will be delivered. That will be left up to Stewart’s. He said his mom, Nici Fix, asked about getting a couple of pints. He said he would buy some extra ones for her. When it comes to consuming a pint, Webber advises, “Pints you eat with a spoon. You don’t scoop.”

Navigating Family Landmines: A Holiday Gathering Survival Guide STEPHENTOWN - Do you sometimes feel that pit in your stomach around holiday gatherings—and it has nothing to do with the rich foods or treats? The holidays are a time of celebration, family, and fun. They can also be a time where disagreements surface, old fights are rehashed, or stories told we’d rather forget. When politics and masks/vaccine practices can divide a family as much as a nation, it’s helpful to have a few tricks to navigate the landmines. Join our workshop open to the community on how to steer clear of the conversations that feel potentially explosive, if not relationally unsafe. Pastor Chris Garrison leads this discussion at the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road on Sunday December 12th at 4pm. All are welcome. Handicapped accessible. Masks required.
When Christmas Feels Blue WEST SAND LAKE - Christmas is a season filled with joy and festivities, but not for everyone. The holidays can be hard on those whose hearts are
hurting, who may have lost a loved one, who may be experiencing illness or who are carrying pain. Not everyone feels like celebrating during the holidays. Salem Church offers a Blue Christmas Service, a gentle, contemplative service for those who are feeling pain or loss during a season of celebration. Blue Christmas is a quiet, reflective worship service, a time to acknowledge our sadness and despair, and remember the season of hope. Christ is coming -- no hustle, no bustle. Feel his light and be encouraged. All are welcome at the Blue Christmas Service. Salem United Methodist Church, Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 7pm, 349 Shaver Road, West Sand Lake, NY (518) 6743106. Brunswick Church to Host Live Nativity & Open House BRUNSWICK - December 19, 2-4 pm - As the world busily prepares for Christmas, Brunswick Church invites you to take a break and truly imagine that first Christmas. Feel the night air, see the young couple in search of a place to stay, the young mother ready to welcome her first son. Smell the straw of the stable and pet the unsuspecting witnesses to the unfolding miracle, the humble animals. Feel the peace and the hope of this historic event that is the center of the season. After visiting the nativi-
ty, we welcome all to come in out of the cold for a hot cocoa and a cookie, and to enjoy some family friendly activities of your choice – hear a story, make an ornament or a family craft. And choose a cupcake and toppings to take with you to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Let the spirit of the season come alive this year. Come, let your hearts be filled with hope and peace.
Blue Christmas Service: Honoring Life and Loss in the Holidays STEPHENTOWN - The Christmas season has an amazing ability to trigger nostalgic memories— both of happy and sad, gratitude and grief. The Blue Christmas tradition honors the fact that for many of us we experience all kinds of loss—the loss of relationships, loss of trust, loss of jobs, loss of health, loss of faith, the loss of joy. Authentic spirituality does
not hide this truth, and instead allows us the space for honesty, reflection, community and practices of support. No matter your circumstance, this is an open welcoming service of candlelight, songs, prayers, and hope. Pastor Chris Garrison leads the service at the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road on Sunday December 19th at 4pm. All are welcome. Handicapped accessible. Masks required.
Candlelight Services BRUNSWICK - We would like to extend a warm invitation to the community to attend one of our Christmas Eve Candlelight Services. We will be offering two identical events of carols, lessons, and candlelight at 3:00 and 6:00 PM. Both services will be held on December 24th in the worship center at Brunswick Church (42 White Church Lane, just off Rt. 351). We would love to have you join us!

How To Make Aging Pets More Comfortable Pets are valued members of many families, and their owners typically do everything they can to ensure their furry friends live as comfortably as possible. Care becomes even more important as pets get older. Just like people, aging pets may eat less and sleep more. They may have reduced stamina and even experience stiffness when getting up from sleep. Certain pets may experience failing eyesight, hearing loss and/or incontinence. According to an American Pet Products Association survey, 67 percent of U.S. households have a pet and will have to cope with that pet becoming a senior at some point. Senior animals might need a little extra help as they age, particularly with regard to comfort. These tips can help. • Visit the vet more often. Senior pets may need to see the vet more frequently than they used to. Pets typically visit the vet every year. Senior pets may require two visits per year. Speak with a veterinarian about how often your aging pet should come in for checkups. Checkups can help identify illnesses earlier and ensure any aches and pains are addressed immediately. • Invest in comfort devices. Pets may need items that can accommodate aches and pains or other conditions. For example, aging pets may benefit from a high quality orthopedic pet bed. Pet strollers and raised food bowls also can make aging pets’ lives a little more comfortable. • Address mobility issues. Aging pets may need help getting around. Non-skid carpet runners in high-traffic areas can help pets walk around securely. Steps or ramps can make it easier to get on or off beds or in and out of vehicles. • Install doggie doors. Senior pets may need to relieve themselves more frequently. A doggy door can allow for faster access to the outdoors. Similarly, a litter box with a lower opening makes it easier for aging cats to use the litter box. • Ensure ample protection against the elements. Aging pets may feel the weather more than younger pets. They may need sweaters and coats or booties to protect their paws from the snow and ice. Cooling or heating mats may improve comfort indoors. • Purchase animal diapers. Some senior pets may not be able to control themselves. Diapers and absorbent pads can keep them dry and prevent soiling around the house. • Help the animal lose weight. Pets should maintain a healthy body weight, which can relieve pressure on joints and reduce risk for certain illnesses, including difficulty breathing and skin irritations. Speak with a veterinarian about the right foods and types of exercise for your pet to keep its weight in check. Aging pets need extra patience and care. Pet owners can improve comfort and accessibility for their senior pets.
Threats To Pets That Roam Outdoors Domesticated pets may have evolved from wild animals, but it has been some time since dogs were needed to hunt like wolves or domesticated cats had to survive like wild leopards or tigers. While pets can enjoy time outdoors, it’s important to avoid leaving them to their own devices for too long. The online health resource Healthcare for Pets says responsible pet ownership necessitates certain precautions to keep pets safe when they venture out of the home. The following is a list of potential dangers that can affect pets outdoors. • Pesticides and poisons: Pet owners may use pet-friendly products in and around their homes. However, there’s no guarantee that your neighbors do the same. Common lawn and garden products, including insecticides and pesticides, may cause anything from mild irritations to toxic poisoning. • Weather: A fur coat does not offer complete protection from conditions like extreme weather. Pets can experience hypothermia or heat stroke if they are exposed to extreme weather for prolonged periods of time. • Automobiles: Dogs and cats that wander can be struck by vehicles and/or ingest potentially harmful substances leaking from cars or trucks. Automotive coolant (antifreeze) is often sweet and brightly colored, which attracts curious pets. Ethylene glycol in coolant is fatal to dogs and cats if ingested. Outdoor cats may hide or seek warmth in car engines, putting them at risk for injury. • Exposure to illnesses: Young animals should not spend prolonged periods of time outdoors before they are vaccinated. However, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends that pet parents begin taking puppies on walks and public outings as early as one week after their initial rounds of vaccinations (roughly seven weeks old) because this is the window of time when socialization skills are learned. • Parasites: Bugs and parasites may be lurking outdoors. Parasitic worm larvae, fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks can be harmful to pets. Ask your vet about year-round flea/tick/heartworm preventatives if a pet spends time outdoors. • Other animals: Wild animals pose a risk to domesticated pets. They can pass illnesses on to pets or engage them in scuffles that result in injuries or even death. If companion animals are not spayed or neutered, pet owners may have to confront unexpected pregnancies after pets spend time outdoors. Pets that spend time outdoors should be supervised whenever they leave the confines of their homes.

‘Insulting’ to be accused of four homicides In closing arguments, suspect says he’s innocent of Troy killings By ROBERT GAVIN
In his final words to the jury at his quadruple-murder retrial, James White said Monday he had no reason to murder a family of four in a Lansingburgh basement in 2017 and called the allegations “insulting.” White, 42, known as “Jay Dub,” told jurors that the women and children he is accused of slaughtering on Dec. 21, 2017, were his friends. “Why would I want to kill these people?” White, who is representing himself at the trial before Rensselaer County Judge Debra Young, told jurors during a summation that lasted more than three hours. White, formerly of Schenectady and now jailed in Rensselaer County, is charged with committing one of the most gruesome crimes in recent Capital Region history. White allegedly bound, gagged and plunged a knife into the necks of Brandi Mells, 22; Shanta Myers, 36; and Myers’ daughter, 5-year-old Shanise Myers. Prosecutors say White did the same to Myers’ son, Jeremiah Myers, 11, who was killed after the boy showed up later from basketball practice. The victims were found by a landlord five days after the bloodshed inside a basement apartment at 158 Second Ave. On the night of the murders, White and former friend Justin Mann, now 28, put their bikes on a CDTA bus in Schenectady
and traveled to Troy to go the victims’ home. Neither White nor prosecutors dispute that. They differ when it comes to what happened in the apartment. White claims that he went to the home to retrieve $12 that, according to White, Mells owed the boyfriend of Mann’s mother for a gram and a half of marijuana. Prosecutors say White knifed the victims during a home invasion to steal video game controllers and a television. They say Mann, who testified for prosecutors, knocked on the door and helped tie up the victims. They said it was a crime that could not have been committed by a single perpetrator, as White contends. White said he did not even enter the apartment. He told jurors on Monday that if he had wanted to steal a television he could have simply thrown a rock into the window of a department store and stolen one. “I can’t tell you how insulting I find that,” White told the jury. “That I could kill not only four people but two kids, including those who were friends to me, just so I could steal their TV.” White testified that while he waited outside the apartment, he suspected that Mann was committing crimes inside. White said he elected not to get involved — even when 11-year-old Jeremiah Myers showed up, soon to be murdered — because of his “principles” not to get involved in disputes between friends.
White said he spoke to the boy, before the boy entered the apartment, about superhero movies, video games and basketball, which, White added, is “utterly boring to me.” Throughout White’s closing argument, he repeatedly made comments that prompted objections from Chief Assistant District Attorney Matthew Hauf and Assistant District Attorney Cheryl McDermott, all sustained by the judge. White’s DNA and the DNA of two victims was found on a black glove that White had in his pocket when police arrested him on Dec. 29, 2017, in Schenectady. White argued that the gloves had been worn by Mann, whom White contends massacred the family all on his own as White was outside. White said that he and Mann switched gloves regularly because, according to White, Mann fancied a pair of red-andblack gloves owned by White so he could look like a Bloods gang member and show the gang’s color of red. Hauf delivered his roughly one-hour summation later Monday afternoon, in which he highlighted a video taken two weeks before the murders that showed White wearing the same black gloves allegedly used in the killings. “What makes more sense to you? … Is it common sense that two grown men switch gloves on several different occasions?” Hauf asked the jury. “I submit to you it’s not common sense. What it does

sound like is a really good story for a Dr. Seuss book: Red gloves. black gloves, your gloves, my gloves.” Mann, who testified for prosecutors, said that on the night of the murders, he knocked on the door of the apartment and falsely claimed that a bike was stolen. Mann said he and White entered the apartment. Mann testified that a maniacal White took a pillow and, one by one, killed the victims. Mann, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges in a deal with prosecutors, testified in exchange for a sentence of 25 years to life under his guilty plea to four charges of second-degree murder. Jurors began deliberations Tuesday after receiving instructions from the judge.

North Greenbush Public Library Update NORTH GREENBUSH Join our virtual book club at 6:30 PM on Monday, December 20, when we will be discussing Kristin Hannah‘s book “The Four Winds” via Zoom. Set in Texas during the Great Depression, it is a portrait of America and the American Dream and the life of one woman’s courage and sacrifice. For a copy of the book or the meeting link, email library@northgreenbushlibrary.org. Put away your wallet and put a smile on your face. Beginning December 1, 2021, all late fines have been eliminated going forward for items checked out at the North Greenbush Public Library. Patrons are still responsible for overdue fines on items checked out at other libraries in the Upper Hudson Library System. Fines for museum passes and wi-fi hot spots, and replacement fees for lost items still apply. Why is the NGPL going finefree? We believe eliminating late fines advances our core mission, to ensure free and equitable access to learning and opportunity for all, no matter their circumstances; that fines discourage the use of the Library and are a disproportionate barrier to low-income families. When fines were removed during the pandemic, our community proved itself responsible and reliable; fines have added less than 1% to the Library’s income. The complete fine-free policy can be found on our website: northgreenbushlibrary.org Library hours are Monday through Friday, 10 AM-7 PM, and Saturday, 10 AM-2 PM. Library patrons are required to wear masks; visits are limited to 30 minutes. Any questions? Call the library at 518-283-0303.

How to reduce Interior & Exterisk rior Painofting home fires this holiday season
Carpentry & Restoration
Safety might not be the first thing people think of as the holiday season approaches. Faith, celebrations, decorations, and holiday dinners all come to mind when considering the holiday season. But that doesn’t mean safety should be left out of holiday planning. Fire safety bears special consideration during the holiday season, when the prevalence of fire hazards like Christmas trees, holiday lighting displays and other dec-

orative items increase the risk for home fires. Such tragedies can be averted with a few simple safety measures. • Tend to your tree. Live Christmas trees are awe-inspiring, but they also pose a significant fire risk. The National Fire Protection Association urges celebrants to purchase only healthy trees with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Such trees are less likely to dry out, especially when well-watered throughout the season. Dry trees can catch fire more easily than healthy trees if embers from nearby fireplaces or candles drift in their direction. • Recognize that location matters when decorating. The NFPA notes that Christmas trees should always be placed at least three feet away from any heat source, including fireplaces, space heaters, heat vents, candles, and even overhead lights. If decorating with candles, never place them on the tree or on tables where other flammable decorations have already been placed. Chanukah menorahs should never be placed near curtains or other decorations. • Turn off all lights and extinguish all lit decorative items when leaving the home or going to bed. Lit candles and menorahs should never be left unattended. The
NFPA recommends turning tree lights and exterior decorative lights off when leaving the home or going to bed. • Utilize a fire screen on fireplaces. Embers can catch on trees, decorations or anything else that’s flammable if they escape the fireplace. Fire screens prevent that from happening by ensuring embers from burning logs stay in the fireplace. Like candles and menorahs, fires burning in a fireplace should never be left unattended. Make sure all embers have been extinguished before leaving the home or going to bed. • Keep discarded trees away from your home. A 2014 analysis from the NFPA found that none of the ten days with the largest share of Christmas tree fires were before Christmas. Dried out trees still pose a fire risk even after they’ve been removed from a home. When discarding a tree at the end of the holiday season, place it at the curb or keep it a safe distance away from your home and garage until you can. Fire safety measures are an important component of the holiday season that can prevent this joyous time of year from turning tragic.

and china cabinets used to be de rigueur, but plenty of people now prefer more open and airy dining rooms. For those who want to keep the cabinet, try decluttering inside to only include the very best display pieces and see if the cabinet can be refinished with paint or a lightly colored stain. • Improve lighting. Make the chandelier the statement piece of the space. Go for a bold color or an innovative design. Then add accessories throughout the space that coordinate with the chandelier. • Add bench seating. Those who need additional seating may not have to get entirely new furniture. Swap out some chairs for benches, which

• Lighten and brighten. Dining rooms were once very formal spaces. Dark woods, large pieces of furniture, overthe-top chandeliers, and other details could be found in many homes. But now that houses are being built with open floor plans, dining rooms can blend with other spaces, which have moved to lighter colored walls, flooring and furniture. A fresh coat of vibrant paint can work wonders and it doesn’t cost much. If you can’t remove a floor, cover it with a brightly colored area rug. • Switch things up with slipcovers. Slipcovers can be changed each season to dramatically alter the look of a dining room for little investment. Slip covers also protect chairs and can be easily laundered after spills. • Add floating shelving. Floating shelves provide much-needed storage or display space without the need to invest in another piece of furniture. Depending on the shelving, they can work in modern design schemes or even farmhouse dining spaces. • Clear out the clutter. It might be time to say “so long” to that large curio cabinet and the knickknacks within it. Curio

Dining & Entertainment Glendora Vegetarian Club I recently added a new aide to my team. Her name is Jonesy, and she also rides horses at 2 different locations. The first one is right in our quaint little town of Nassau at Chavin Equestrian Center on Loweree Rd. It is owned by Marsha Chavin. There Jonesy rides a 13 year old draft/TB cross named Simon. They’ve been working on dressage which is the art of classical horsemanship. You might have seen videos of the Spanish Lipizzaner stallions in Vienna. That is how dressage was started.

The second barn where Jonesy rides is in Hoosick Falls. The owner, Harry Diel, moved here from Germany 17 years ago to open Diel Dressage. Harry is a riding master who rode one of the Lipizzaners while he worked with his family in Germany. Jonesy enjoys watching Harry go through his day, and she trains with his wife Adria. They have boarders and prepare several horses for competition. Glendora sends Jonesy off to ride the horses with carrots, apples and peppermints. She wants to know if the horses are happy. Jonesy always likes to leave them happier than she found them. Personally, Glendora would let all horses run free without any trappings. Jokes 1. Who was the last person to box Joe Lewis? LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PFOA Saga - It took a town What makes Poestenkill unique in terms of the groundwater contamination affecting the children at Algonquin school is that in 1995, given a clear choice to have it be otherwise, the people of Poestenkill, by an overwhelming majority, chose this future of contaminated drinking water those schoolchildren now have, and the undisputable proof of that statement is found in our official town records in a 22 April 1996 letter to Hon. Michael J. Novack, Clerk, New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department, re: Appeal No. 75470, from then-town attorney Patrick Tomaselli whose shrine for those who worship his memory sits outside Poestenkill town hall on its “Walk of Heros,” to wit: 4. Significantly, it must be noted that all five members of the current Town Board are different from those who served on the former Town Board which had filed the underlying Petition (Poestenkill v DEC) herein on or about July 28, 1993. Further, the fact that all former Town Board members have been replaced by the local electorate is attributable in no small part to the fact that the new members embrace different philosophies and attitudes on many issues, including unnecessary involvement in expensive and time-consuming litigation. Those “current Board members” in 1996 whose philosophy was quite different from that of their immediate predecessors included now-supervisor Keith Hammond, the pro-polluter, pro-retaliation, anti-law and order candidate recently re-elected by the biggest landslide in

Poestenkill history. As to Town of Poestenkill v. DEC, it was an Article 78 filed in Albany County Supreme Court in June of 1992 by the Town of Poestenkill on behalf of the town residents to challenge the issuance of fraudulent permits by DEC in Poestenkill. In 1996, by the will of the people, that challenge to DEC corruption in Poestenkill was dropped and thanks to them, here we now are with water not fit to drink or water hogs with. Kudos! ance because the additional traffic, noise, congestion, environment impact, and disruption of farm work would seriously degrade the standard of living for everybody in the area except the people making money at their neighbors’ expense. Neighbors have overwhelmingly opposed this project. There is no valid reason for the Town to do anything except oppose the variance. Jack and Laura Schreiner, West Sand Lake
Still Say No to Party Barn
So here we are again! My family and extended family including grandchildren live on Barnes Road. We are part of the Barnes Road Neighborhood Association. Our group has expanded to roads beyond our neighborhood including those that would suffer as a result of additional unwanted traffic and party activity that the town has no ability to control. Barnes Road is a small backroad with active agricultural activity and residential homes. It is a road without shoulders, lighting or lines and has several unsafe curves with hidden driveways. The Supreme Court ruled against this Party Barn project. Why would the town consider an appeal. Our original concerns remain! Only the applicant would benefit. One taxpayer versus all our neighbors and members who are also taxpayers and rely on the town’s representatives to protect our homes and interests. Suzanne Gaylord, West Sand Lake
There is a renewed effort to build a party barn on Barnes Road after the proposal was shot down in court. Barnes road is a twisty little two lane byway lined with farms and single family homes. In 2006, the Town of Sand Lake issued a comprehensive plan that was supposed to guide how the town would develop in the future. It also specified areas where development was not to be encouraged. Barnes Road is zoned Agricultural/Residential. According to the plan “This area encompasses the majority of the active farms and good soil in the Town. The retention of farmland and low density residential uses in this area is encouraged in this plan.” The creation of a nuisance facility like a party barn goes directly against the plan’s intent. To build the party facility, which would change the character of the neighborhood, requires a zoning variance. It requires a vari-

OPINION
The Hypocrisy Of Democrats' 'Build Back Better' Bill Giving The Rich A Colossal Tax Cut Jonah Goldberg, Tribune Content Agency
For the first five years, the single most expensive item in the House version of the Democrats' "Build Back Better," or "human" infrastructure, bill is a gigantic tax cut for millionaires and billionaires. This provision would lift the cap from $10,000 to $80,000 on income tax deductions for state and local taxes (commonly referred to among budget nerds as "SALT"). Given how inconvenient this is for a party that for years has been campaigning against millionaires and billionaires, some Democrats prefer the claim that it's merely the second-most-costly provision. They do this by merging the childcare and pre-K programs into a single item. But no matter how you slice it, giving a huge tax cut to the super-rich is a weird thing to do when you've been claiming that the solution to our problems is simply getting the rich to "pay their fair share." It's even weirder when you consider that this tax break would be even bigger and more regressive than former President Trump's tax "giveaway" that was so reviled by progressives -which the House version would keep. Benefits from the Democrats' regressive giveaway would largely go to taxpayers in the top 20% of the income scale and would overwhelmingly benefit the top 0.1% of earners, specifically in high-tax states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois and California. Obviously, this is all justly ripe for accusations of hypocrisy. But what explains the hypocrisy? I can see three mutually reinforcing reasons.
First, and most obvious, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needed every vote she could get to pass this thing in the House, since no Republican would vote for it, and Democrats from high-tax states insisted on restoring the SALT deduction greatly reduced by Republicans under Trump. Second, for all their soak-the-rich rhetoric, Democrats rely on wealthy donors, too. In 2020, 24 of the top 50 individual donors gave to Democrats. Liberal billionaires are a thing, too. As in 2008, Wall Street money went disproportionately to Biden and other Democrats in 2020. The rule of thumb is that culture-war issues help Republicans with voters and help Democrats with donors. But sometimes, wealthy liberals want their financial interests protected, too. But I think the biggest reason for the SALT giveaway has less to do with Democrats carrying water for the 1% and more to do with protecting what Walter Russell Mead has dubbed the "blue social model" of politics. The Democratic Party is heavily -- and increasingly -- dependent on college-educated, urban (often white) voters clustered in big cities and very wealthy suburbs. These high-tax states and localities need rich people to pay for everything from generous benefits to public-sector unions, unfunded pensions and bloated bureaucracies. The SALT deduction reduces the incentives for the wealthy to vote with their feet. But it doesn't eliminate them, which is why so many people are fleeing high-tax states like California and New York for low-tax ones like Florida and Texas. Of course, they're not all tax fugitives; some are leaving because of issues like affordabil-
ity and business regulation, which are also problems for blue-model jurisdictions. On another level, the SALT deduction also helps mask and subsidize bad state and local taxation and spending decisions. Indeed, much of Build Back Better is made to appeal to the blue-model coalition. A massive tax credit for electric cars can be rationalized in the context of climate change, but it also serves blue-state voters, who own the lion's share of electric vehicles. Likewise, the child-care provisions in the bill could disqualify many religious institutions from receiving federal subsidies because of federal nondiscrimination statutes -- despite the fact that more than half (53%) of families that rely on such services do so through religiously affiliated institutions. This reflects another example of favoring Democratic interest groups. At this point, it's unclear if the SALT provision in the House version will survive in the Senate. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont -- unlike his progressive counterparts in the House -- remains opposed, because he rightly sees it as a gift to the millionaires and billionaires he excoriates. He's working with Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey on a less regressive version of the SALT provision. But tinkering can't hide the fact that the Democrats' agenda is as much about investing in their own party's infrastructure as it is about investing in the country's. the Times Union, Polaro warned the then-assemblyman that at least two neighbors may have witnessed an argument between them. The Times Union did not name Polaro at the time. “You put your hands on me for the last time today,” she could be heard telling McLaughlin on the recording. “Did you ever think I was going to let you beat me up and get away with it?” McLaughlin responded, “I didn’t touch you. I didn’t (expletive) touch you.” His campaign later produced a recording in which Polaro recanted the allegations — though she subsequently told the Times Union she had been pressured to do that.
McLaughlin arrived in the courtroom for his arraignment in front of Judge Jennifer Sober at around noon Wednesday. The newly reelected county executive, who was represented by attorney Benjamin W. Hill, has until Jan. 17 to enter a plea. He was released on his own recognizance. McLaughlin didn’t speak during the proceedings before Sober. He rushed from the courtroom without responding to reporters’ questions. The Times Union first reported Tuesday on the likelihood that criminal charges would be filed against him. The Rensselaer County Legislature’s Democratic minority leadership called for McLaughlin to resign, while the Republican

chairman of the GOPcontrolled legislature stuck by him. “I think he should step down. It’s a public trust issue,” Minority Leader Peter Grimm, D-Troy, said. County Legislature Chairman Michael Stammel, R-Rensselaer, said, “He’s still innocent until proven guilty.” The investigation has been in the backdrop of the county’s rough-and-tumble political community since it began in 2019. It was anticipated McLaughlin would face legal action in the spring of 2020, but the corona-virus pandemic shut down the state court system, halting grand jury presentations. Members of the attorney general’s public integrity unit last month presented their case to a county

grand jury, which returned the indictment. As part of the same investigation of McLaughlin, Polaro was arrested by the State Police on March 11, 2020, and charged with a misdemeanor larceny charge over an incident in Schenectady in March 2017. A person briefed on the investigation, but not authorized to publicly comment, said the charge against Polaro stemmed from an ATM withdrawal that had been made at Rivers Casino that month from a campaign account. The Times Union reported in January 2020 that the investigation had also examined whether McLaughlin, 58, had given bonuses or pay increases to former staffers in the state Assembly in exchange for them returning some of the funds to him or using the money to donate to his campaign account, according to multiple people
who were interviewed by investigators. But there are no charges related to those allegations. Under state law, McLaughlin — whose second term begins in January — would have to leave office if he’s convicted of a felony. He would be succeeded by the deputy county executive until a special election could be held. Stacey A. Farrar, the director of budget, is the current deputy county executive. Republicans have speculated that she may be replaced by Jim Gordon, the county director of purchasing and a McLaughlin confidant. Gordon is a North Greenbush councilman-elect and a former Troy councilman whose unsuccessful 2015 campaign for Troy mayor was rattled by the disclosure that his wife called 911 during a domestic disturbance at the couple’s Lansingburgh residence. McLaughlin was a four-

term state assemblyman when he was first elected county executive in 2017. In the Assembly, he maintained a small staff that at times included members of his campaign team, including Polaro, who was his former longtime campaign treasurer, and Nick Wilock, who served as his Assembly campaign manager and remains employed as a Republican aide in that chamber. Polaro and Wilock each served as McLaughlin’s chief of staff at different times. The investigation by the FBI and state attorney general’s office had also focused on Crist. Neither he nor his attorney could be reached for comment. In March 2019, Crist was placed on leave from his $105,000-a-year county job — with McLaughlin’s consent — after the Times Union reported that he was a focus of the criminal investigation. Crist returned to work five months later, and people close to him had claimed that the probe had found no wrongdoing.
