EAST GREENBUSH – Supervisor Jack Conway, a lifelong Democrat, said he will leave the party and not run on its line if he decides to seek a third four-year term in 2023.

Conway said he would run for reelection on the East Greenbush First line. In 2015, Conway ran on the unaffiliated line to win the supervisor’s race, drawing votes for his anti-casino stance and calls for reform.

“The Rensselaer County and East Greenbush Democratic chairs are ineffective, reactionary, and bereft of a single progressive idea. There’s no place for progressives in the party,” Conway, 70, said in a recent statement on Facebook announcing his decision.

Conway said he would become a blank, an unaffiliated voter and “if I run for reelection it will be on the East Greenbush First line.”

Conway has been one of the bright spots for the Democrats locally since he led the East Greenbush First slate of himself and Tina Tierney and Tom Grant, who were elected as town council members, to victory beating the Republican and Democratic slates.

The key element in the successful East Greenbush First campaign was their opposition to the proposal to locate the casino

planned for the Capital Region in the town. Their position was supported by many town residents. The casino eventually went to Schenectady, where the Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady was built and now operates.

East Greenbush has been a positive for Democrats in Rensselaer County, where they have seen little success outside of the town and the cities of Troy and Rensselaer.

Conway said his decision was fueled in part by a request made by East Green-bush Democratic Chairman Bob Poitras that he resign “for the good of the party” after his son Brian died in May. Also cited was county Democrats’ initial opposition to placing an early voting location in downtown Troy – which took a state law and action by the state Attorney General to force – and not being invited to the East Greenbush Democrat’s Christmas party.

Poitras said he didn’t ask Conway to resign. He also said that the Christmas party was an extension of the town committee meeting and that Conway wasn’t invited because he had informed him in a June 27 letter he would not run as a Democrat again.

County Democratic Chairman Michael

Poitras said the town Democrats intend to put up a full slate including town supervisor in the town’s 2023 elections. Conway ran successfully for a second term on the Democratic line in the 2019 elections.

If Conway decides to run for a third term he may face his former running mate Grant in the 2023 election. Grant, an enrolled Republican, has launched a campaign for East Greenbush

RENSSELAER — Scores of Amtrak passengers were either delayed or temporarily stranded Monday thanks to problems in New York City to the south and heavy snow that have buried the Buffalo area to the west.

Amtrak media relations people didn’t immediately return emails on Monday but several passengers at the Rensselaer Amtrak station said they were told that a water main break in or near New York City’s Moynihan Train Hall/ Penn Station complex had halted train service in and out of there.

An Amtrak Northeast Twitter post said that as of about 3:30 p.m., Train 280, which is southbound was still stopped south of Croton–Harmon due to “unforeseen track work in the New York (NYP) area.”

RailRat.net, a train tracking website, posted that train, which left Albany at 10:05 a.m., was expected to arrive at 3:45 p.m., or two hours and 59 minutes late. It wasn’t clear at 4:30 p.m. if the train made it to New York City.

Shortly after 3 p.m. in Rensselaer, ticket agents started telling passengers they could board southbound trains and that they would probably make it as far south as the Croton-Harmon station in Westchester.

From there, they would likely board a Metro North train to Grand Central rather than Penn Station.

Travelers, many of whom had purchased tickets in advance, appeared to take the southbound delay in stride.

“Hopefully before midnight,” New York City resident Susan Whipple said of when she thought she would get home.

She had planned to leave at 1:15 p.m. Monday after visiting family members in

the Capital Region over Christmas weekend.

At 3 p.m. she was still waiting.

“The app said 3:51,” Dylan Alexander said of his phone app that informed him of the delay of a 3:11 train.

His parents had driven him from Utica to drop him off at Rensselaer where the plan was to ride the train home to New York City.

The Amtrak schedule signs indicated that four trains headed to New York City, at 1:05, 1:10,

Law shields Amazon warehouse workers

Protections, signed by Hochul last week , come amid activists’ complaints of unrealistic quotas

ALBANY — Warehouse workers at delivery and courier firms including Amazon and UPS will have new protections against what activists say are unrealistic work quotas, thanks to a law signed last week by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The Warehouse Worker Protection Act covers manual warehouse employees including those at warehouses operated by courier and delivery services.

The new law requires that warehouse companies provide their employees with documentation of their expected work quotas when they are hired, or when the law takes effect, which is two months from now.

Employees must also be given copies of their quotas when changes are made. They also have the right to request their quota at any time, even after their employment ends.

Additionally, the quotas, which set expectations, for instance, on how many packages must be moved or placed into shipping areas, cannot interfere with lunch, rest or bathroom breaks.

The measure was sponsored by Queens Democratic state Sen. Jessica Ramos and Bronx Democratic Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner, who chair their conferences’ labor committees.

It was spearheaded in part by New Yorkers for a Fair Economy, a coalition of unions including the Teamsters, which represents UPS employees; the Amazon Labor Union, which represents the Staten Island Amazon fulfillment center; and the Retail, Wholesale and Department

East Greenbush Community Library Waives

Existing Fines, Goes Fine Free Jan. 1st!

1/1/23- EGCL no longer charges overdue fines for most items returned past the due date. Patrons are still responsible for all other library charges and fees, including lost and damaged materials and late charges for specialty items. A replacement cost will be charged for items not returned within 30 days after they are due. Existing fines for East Greenbush cardholders will be waived. Lost/damaged item charges will remain. Read FAQs https://eglibrary.org/ fine-free.

Library Director, Jill Dugas Hughes, explains how going

Store Union.

Amazon in recent years has been the target of complaints about what employees have said is a grueling work pace at its large warehouses and fulfillment centers.

fine-free is good for the community. “Libraries regionally and nationally have demonstrated that imposing overdue fines as an incentive to return items on time is not effective. Studies show that one of the primary reasons families stop using the Library is accumulating fines on their accounts.

Fines disproportionately impact our most vulnerable at a time when they need Library services the most. Over the years, I have observed parents telling their children to put books back on the shelf, because they know they will not be able to return them to the library in time. Parents have been shocked at how quickly fines racked up for their large stack of picture books. We want to remove barriers, not block people from access. By removing late fees, we hope that patrons will visit us more often and check out more items with less worry.” Going fine-free supports our community by prioritizing connecting people to resources without late fees standing in the way.

Fortunately, library fines account for less than 1% of the Library’s annual budget and the library has shifted other budget lines to make up for lost revenue. Fine free means judgement free. If you have been avoiding the library because you are worried about paying fines, we are happy to welcome you back!

Columbia Student Nominated for U.S. Presidential Scholar Program

Columbia High School senior Akkhil Morkonda is one of 25 New York State high school seniors to be nominated for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, according to the NYS Education Department. Presidential Scholar recognition is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.

The program makes selections annually based on academics, school evaluations, transcripts, community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.

“It’s quite an honor,” Morkonda said of his selection.

Morkonda is a High Honor Roll student, a member of the Math League and MasterMinds, and he was inducted into the Science National Honor Society this fall. He also competes on the Columbia Science Olympiad team, winning a sliver medal at the 2022 NYS Championships.

This past summer, he completed an internship as a

technical assistant at a hospital in India.

Application to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is by invitation only. Students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars receive a U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion in June.

“I sincerely appreciate the nomination of Akkhil Morkonda from my Assembly District that was put forth by Commissioner Betty Rosa as part of an elite group of students for the Presidential Scholars program,” said Assemblymember John T. McDonald III, who represents a portion of the East Greenbush CSD in the state legislature.

After graduating from Columbia in June, Morkonda plans to attend a four-year university and study biomedical engineering.

“Akkhil is a compassionate and thoughtful person who has a positive impact on anyone he encounters each day,” said Columbia Principal Michael Harkin. “It has been a pleasure being his principal and I look forward to his impact on the world in the future.”

Goff Middle School Cafeteria Begins Composting Program

Howard L. Goff Middle School in East Greenbush began a composting project earlier this month. As part of the project, students scrape leftover food on their lunch trays into a composting bin beside the trash can. Over a two-week period, 320 pounds of food scraps were collected.

The scraps were dumped into a FoodScraps360 truck and then brought to the Town of Bethlehem’s Commercial Composting Facility where it is transformed into compost.

Composting is a controlled process that converts organic materials into a nutrient-rich soil through decomposition, according to the EPA. It aids agriculture and landscapers by providing compost as fertilizer, but it also has environmental benefits, lowering greenhouse gases by “preventing methane emissions.”

The Composting Project began as an idea in the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council and then became a Participation in Government project submitted by Columbia High School seniors this past school year.

Those students included Kaiden Ring ’22, Jalena Kirkorian ’22, Maddie Hoffman ’22, Bella Condo ’22 and Faith Webb ’22.

“I am so excited to see a student-created public policy action plan put into place in our district,” said Participation in Government teacher Kelley Sheraw. “This shows kids that they can create and make change in our

society.”

Now that the project has become a reality, Goff students are getting involved.

Students in Goff’s Garden Club and DOME Club created an instructional video for their classmates on how to compost. They are also assisting in the cafeteria during lunch periods.

Colleen Wise, the Food Service Manager who is helping with the project, said there are plans to add composting at Columbia later this winter.

“Food waste is a common challenge for school meal programs,” Mrs. Wise said. “We are excited to partner with FoodScraps360 to implement a composting program that will turn our food waste into a valuable resource.”

CONTINUED FROM 2 2:10 and 3:11 had all been delayed.

The Lake Shore Limited heading west to Chicago at 3:27 p.m. was canceled.

“I was supposed to leave at 1:10,” said Tracy Edwards who was trying to get to Syracuse and was roaming around the station pulling a rolling suitcase behind her.

“I’m thinking about taking a Greyhound (bus),” said Jose Balon who was headed for Utica.

“There’s too much snow,” Chris Hershberger, who was trying to get to Buffalo, said.

Being Amish, he doesn’t use a cellphone and didn’t realize there were delays until he arrived at the station. Now, with no set timetable for when the westbound trains would be running again, a friend was going to pick him up and take him back to his brother’s home in Greenwich.

Even dedicated train riders were looking for options on Monday.

Steve Strauss, spokesman for the Empire State Passenger Association, which advocates for more Amtrak funding, said the group’s president, Gary Prophet, was attempting to fly home to New York from Chicago after learning of the rail cancellations.

In those facilities, employees spend their days moving packages — ranging from microwaves to toilet paper packages to furniture and clothing — from shelves or entry areas to packaging stations and then shipping spots, where they are loaded onto trucks for delivery to customers.

That’s led to a nascent push to unionize some of the facilities, although just one Amazon center — known as JFK8, in Staten Island — has been unionized so far.

Workers at the fulfillment center in Schodack, known as ALB1, voted 406-206 in October against joining the union.

Amazon Labor Union Vice President Derrick Palmer praised the new law, saying it was a boost to employees who may want to unionize.

“This shows that we can and will protect our fellow essential workers,” Palmer said.

“Teamster members have spent decades fighting for strong safety standards in the warehouse industry, but Amazon’s growth is again putting workers in danger,” said Thomas Gesualdi, President of Teamsters Joint Council 16.

Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said the company doesn’t have fixed quotas.

“Instead, we assess performance based on safe and achievable expectations and take into account time and tenure, peer performance and adherence to safe work practices,” she said.

“While we know we aren’t perfect, we are committed

Rensselaer Plateau Alliance January Speaker Series

RPA warmly invites you to Culverts and Aquatic Organism Passage on the Plateau with Andy Dangler and Melissa Toni as part of our January Speaker Se-

to continuous improvement when it comes to communicating with and listening to our employees and providing them with the resources they need to be successful.”

The company also allows employees to take short breaks at any time to use the restroom, grab water or a snack, step away from their screen, or speak to their coworkers, manager, human resources or others.

Passage of the law was the second bit of good news the Teamsters have received in recent weeks.

As well, 11,000 retired Teamsters, mostly truckers, learned that an earlier cut to their pension was being restored with money from President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

Many different agencies fund, permit, and deliver projects involving culverts under roadways. This discussion covers the Federal level of involvement in culvert replacement and the incorporation of Aquatic Organism Passage through the culverts. We will talk about the biology of the streams on the Plateau, how culverts interact with the watercourses, and the regulatory setting at the Federal level regarding replacement, rehabilitation, and restoration of culverts and stream crossings. The discussion will include several local examples, including the July 2021 flooding events.

Pre-registration is required. The suggested voluntary donation is $5, though any amount is welcome. Head over to rensselaerplateau.org/events to register and receive the zoom link or reach out to Dan Morse at dan@rensselaerplateau.org for more information.

Rensselaer Plateau Alliance January Nature Book Club

You are warmly invited to RPA’s Nature Book Club, with Rama Hamarneh, PhD. One evening a month, we will meet on Zoom to discuss a book we have read, and the work’s relationship to nature. We will explore multiple aspects of nature in literature - represented through multiple genres and authors from around the globe.

January’s meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 31 at 7pm on Zoom. The Zoom link for each meeting will be sent out to the book club email list a few days before the meeting. The book club is free to attend, and all are welcome.

For January 2023, we’ll read All Things Bright and Beautiful by James Herriot. All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot’s first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants—both two- and four-legged.

Throughout, Herriot’s deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine as we laugh, cry, and delight in the portraits of his many varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

This book is available through the Upper Hudson Library System in physical format, on Hoopla via the library as an ebook and audiobook, at Market Block Books, and through other book sellers. Head to rensselaerplateau.org/ rpa-book-club for more information.

A Day of Animal Tracks:

Jan 14: Two Sessions - Register for one or both

Explore some of the pristine lands around Dyken Pond Center and follow the sign, tracks and trails of the many diverse animals that live here. Deer, turkey, grouse, bobcat, fisher, fox and coyote are just some of the species that call these woods home. Learn from experienced and certified tracker Dan Yacobellis, how to read the signs they leave behind to find out where they sleep, what they eat, how they avoid detection and what is most important to them at this time of year to make it through to spring. Even get a glimpse into their subtle ways of communicating with each other and learn how to interpret their language.

Two sessions: 9 to 12 and/or 12:30-3:30.

Come for one or both

$25 per session; $22 members

Preregistration required at www.dykenpond.org or call (518) 658-2055 or dykenpond@gmail.com for more info.

Tracking is a slow and studious pursuit and generally looses the interest of young children pretty quick. Children 10 and up with a passion for learning and some patience, are welcome. While tracking, we often spend long periods of time stationary in discussion of the sign, so dress for a full day in the woods and then add 2 layers!

SHAC Community Center News & Thanks

During this holiday season we are grateful for the support of the community. This fall, our community has been making generous contributions towards our Annual Fund to help heat and winterize the Sky High Adventure Community Center (SHAC Center) at 27 Lake Avenue in Averill Park.

We will now be able to continue programming year round thanks to the renovations made thanks to the generosity of our donors, volunteers, committee and board

Since our soft opening of the SHAC Center in June of 2021, dedicated volunteers have also been creating programs and offering services for residents of Averill Park and surrounding communities. Future plans include services for veterans, seniors, and families needing after school programs and daycare, HVCC continuing Ed classes and much more.

Please take notice that it has come to our attention that many items mailed to us have not arrived at our address due to a clerical error not in our control. We believe the problem has been fixed with the help of the US Post Office, Postal Inspectors and the Inspector General’s Office. If you have sent a donation and did not receive an acknowledgement letter from us, this means that we did not receive your donation and would ask that you contact us at info@<SHACcenter.org or call 518-674-6348.

Sky High Adventure Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible. We are grateful for every donation big and small and we are putting every penny of it to good use.

If you have not made a donation yet, please consider making a donation online at www.SHACcenter.org/donations or you can scan the QR code below.

Sand Lake Historical Society Announces 2023 Schedule

SLHS will be presenting the following public programs, from January to June 2023:

January 10th, Sand Lake “Show & Tell” Returns! Check your attic, your junk drawer, or that box on the top shelf of your closet – who knows what you’ll find? We’re looking for artifacts, photos, old documents of Sand Lake’s history – or yours. New for 2023: if you’ve been working on any locally-based historical research (a popular Covid pastime!) please share it.

February 14th, Edmonia Lewis. East Greenbush Town Historian Bobbie Reno will discuss Edmonia Lewis, noted American sculptor of mixed African American and Native American heritage, born right here in Rensselaer County. You’ve seen her on a postage stamp, now come hear her story.

March 14th, The Rensselaer Glassworks. Phil Bernnard of the National Bottle Museum will discuss Rensselaer Glassworks, one of Sand Lake’s early industries (and gave us “Glass Lake”). Hear the history of the works, the succession of owners, and the technology of 18th and 19th century glassmaking. Phil is asking attendees to bring any “Glass Lake glass” specimens they have, too.

April 11th, Covid-19 History Project. Committee report and presentations and a sharing of experiences from the SLHS Covid History Project. Let’s make Covid history!

May 9th, Annual Meeting. Elections, annual report to the membership – and more!

June 3rd, (tentative) Annual Gala. Final date and location to be announced. Don’t miss this highlight of

our year!

June 13th, The Pretty Fantastic Mr. Fox. Albert Rodmond Fox, industrialist, glassworks owner, State Senator, mover-and-shaker, and the Fox who gave us Fox Mansion. Learn about one of Sand Lake’s early leaders and speculate on why we live in Averill Park and not “Foxboro.”

All SLHS programs (unless otherwise noted) are held at the Sand Lake Town Hall Courtroom, 8428 NY Rte. 66, Averill Park, beginning at 7:00 pm. More information at http://sandlakehistory.org/. Like us on Facebook.

Greenbush Historical Society Presents Hampton Manor, the Past to the Present

Please join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, January 22 , 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library for an interesting presentation about Hampton Manor’s rich history and exciting future.

Bobbie Reno, East Greenbush Town Historian and Society Board member, will discuss the historical events leading up to the present.

In 1812 the United States Government purchased a tract of land at Clinton Heights and established the Cantonment Greenbush as headquarters for the US Army Northern Division, War of 1812.

When the government closed the Cantonment Greenbush, the property was subsequently sold.

In 1925 Cantonment Farm and Hathornden Estates were purchased by Harold Veeder who developed the property known as Hampton Manor in East Greenbush. Hampton Manor is a vibrant community in the town and home to many of its residents today.

Because seating is limited, please call the library at 518-477-7476 to register.
