So, you want a vegetable garden? The first thing you’ll need to determine is whether it is even possible to have one in your yard. Vegetables need sun and lots of it. If you picked out a lovely home in the forest then your chances of success are slim. Sure a tomato plant might survive in the shade but it won’t have the energy to produce much, if any fruit. To get decent results your garden need to get at least 8 hours of direct sun a day during summer. That is the minimum; full sun all day long is the ultimate. My experience is that most folks are overly optimistic when judging light conditions. If you’re going to put in the effort then be realistic about the location. No matter of wishful thinking can create sunlight. The area should also be reasonably well drained. ‘Well drained’ means that a heavy rain should run off or get soaked into the soil within a couple of hours. If you know the area has standing water for a couple of days after a rainstorm then it is likely too soggy to make a good garden spot. Sandy soil drains well but clay soil will need a slight slope to allow water to run off the garden. Once you’re satisfied that your garden location gets plenty of sun, you can turn your attention to the soil. While the sun provides the energy your garden needs, the soil provides all the nutrients and elements needed to actually build the plants from scratch. As I mentioned above, sandy soil drains well…sometimes too well. Very clay soil on the other hand doesn’t drain water away quickly enough resulting in drowned plants. Interestingly the solution to both problems is the same…the addition of lots of organic matter. By organic matter I mean rotting plant material. This could be aged manure you bring from a farm or composted manure you buy at the garden center. The best organic matter you can add of course is compost you make yourself. I’ll get back to that in a moment. Blending organic matter into sandy soil keeps the water from draining away too quickly so you don’t need to water constantly. Adding lots of organic matter to heavy clay soil breaks up the clay and creates air pockets in the soil to keep the plants from drowning while the soil dries out. If you add more and more organic matter to the soil every season soon you’ll have an excellent loam that will produce excellent crops. As I mentioned, home made compost is the finest soil additive available and it is essentially free if you make it yourself. Every vegetable garden should have a composting area. When you compost, you gain fiber, nutrients and microbes that build and feed your soil and the plants growing in it. All the topsoil on the planet is the product of millions of years of growth, death and decomposition (composting) of living things. Our future is always built on the past. It seems that there are as many methods of composting as there are books about it. There is a lot of great information around, but I fear that most beginners are intimidated by it. Let me just say, there is no such thing as bad compost. Any compost is better than no compost. My composting area is two 4’ X 4’ bins side by side in the corner of the vegetable garden. It is constructed of shipping pallets or skids. The pile on the right is the one we are loading daily with compostable scraps from the kitchen. Once it gets a 3’ high, we switch bins, letting the one continue to compost while we toss fresh material into the empty bin. The reason one is empty is because we use all the compost in the vegetable garden as we plant every spring. We turn the fresh pile every week and often bury the day’s compost in the center of the pile. You don’t want to let your compost get too dry but you don’t want it soggy either. It wants to be about as moist as a squeezed out sponge. If it gets a little dry, just water it lightly. If it gets too wet, it may begin to smell. A smelly pile of compost isn’t working properly. Mix in some straw or dry grass clippings to dry out the pile and get it going again. I occasionally sprinkle a couple of handsfull of fertilizer onto the pile just to give the microbes that live there (and who are actually doing all the real work) a little treat. I like to use Espoma’s Plant Tone since it not only provides nutrients but also contains the actual microbes that will work to make your compost the best it can be. Talk about complete nutrition!! Every once in a great while I’ll toss in a couple of handsfull of powdered lime to counteract acidity for all that composting material. Use lime very sparingly...more is not better. Mine is not a very scientific approach, but I’ve been using this casual approach for years and have no complaints about the quality of the compost I get. I encourage you to try your hand at composting. Your garden will reward you for your efforts with even more tasty vegetables. To be continued…thanks for the read

Did You Know? The shamrock is the national flower of Ireland because of Saint Patrick. Credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Christian belief in the Holy Trinity to the pagans of Ireland. While historians lend credence to Saint Patrick’s use of the shamrock, another legend associated with the patron saint of Ireland is purely mythical. Those with a casual knowledge of Saint Patrick likely know he is most commonly credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland. However, snakes have never been indigenous to Ireland, and m many historians note that Ireland was separated from the rest r of the continent by the end of the Ice Age, which would have made it imposwoul sible for snakes to infest Ireland by the time Saint Patrick was born. The legend of Saint Patri Patrick driving snakes from Ireland is likely rooted in the pagan practices that employed paga the use of serpent symbols during worship. So when durin Saint Patrick is credited with driving snakes from Ireland, drivi this is likely just symbolic of success at spreading Chrishis su tianity and putting an end to paga pagan practices, including those that used likenesses of serpents. serpe

Seeing Shades of Green on St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is all about the green. While most shades of green are acceptable for St. Patrick’s Day festivities, to be true to the holiday a person should wear the offical green of Ireland. Shamrock green, or Irish green as it’s often called, is a distinct color breakdown and part of the Irish flag and celebration coloring. Individuals with knowledge of graphic arts will find Shamrock green is Pantone shade 347. For those who are manually creating the color in RGB, the concentrations of each color are 0, 158, 96. This the same green employed by the NBA’s Boston Celtics. Another shade of green popular in Ireland is Kelly green. The color gets its name from the surname “Kelly,” which is prevalent on the Emerald Isle. The first recorded use of the term kelly green as a color name in English was in 1935. Many sports teams once used Kelly green as their team color, including the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. But most have switched to other shades of green, like hunter green, which is a darker shade. Because green is the color of many plants and trees and the most predominant color on the planet, it is often associated with new life, rebirth and well-being. In color therapy, green heals the heart, regenerates cells and eases tensions. Rooms painted in green are thought to be calming. Some say that people who love to wear green have an adventurous streak to them.
