IS YOUR LOVED ONE in a nursing home? Are you unable to visit as often as you would like? I can help. I provide a service to improve the quality of life for nursing home residents thru one on one companionship and activities the resident enjoys. Desperation and loneliness can affect one’s health and hinder recuperation. Undivided attention (without needles, meds, poking or prodding) will make a person feel important and cared for. Please call Cynthia at 399-9152 for rates and availability. Tell me a bit about your loved one and together we can come up with a plan to enrich their life.

For most of us there are plenty of vegetable and flower seedlings available at the garden center to choose from in spring so you may not feel the need to start any seeds. However, there may be a tomato variety that you want to try that you’ve never seen available as a seedling, or an uncommon annual flower that you want to try out. In this case, you’ll need to start your own. “But how…and when do we start our seeds?” For instance, a tomato seed pack might say, “For best results, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting time.” The beginner will say, “Yeah, well what day is that?” The average last frost date for the Albany Airport is May 7th. That date seems wildly optimistic to me. We often get frosts after May 7th. For our area, I think May 15th - 20th makes more sense, and there’s no reason to rush planting only to risk a late frost. Tomatoes and peppers stall when temperatures go below 50°F, so waiting to plant them often results in an earlier harvest than from plants subjected to too many cold nights early in the season. In my garden in the Glenville Hills, I generally shoot for planting the week before Memorial Day. The next step is to get a calendar and combine the information on the seed packs to come up with a logical schedule for starting our seeds indoors. First mark ‘Planting Week’ (May 15th-20th) on your calendar. Then mark the week previous to ‘Planting Week’ “1 week” meaning ‘one week before planting’. Mark the week previous to that “2 weeks” and so on until you’ve marked up to ’10 weeks’ before planting. 10 weeks before planting should end up being second week of March (6th - 12th). Now look at the information on the seed packs to see how many “weeks before planting” we need to get the seeds started indoors. For instance, here’s the info on the pack of eggplant seeds: Now that we’ve got a calendar custom made for our growing season, we can easily figure out when to start these seeds indoors...sometime in mid-March. You can tape the seed packs to your calendar on the week that they need to get sown or just write them into the correct week on the calendar. There are a few, like onions and leeks, that need to get started 10 weeks before our frost-free planting date. The real flurry of seed starting occurs between 6 and 8 weeks before planting. On the calendar, that’s the last couple of weeks of March and the first week of April. There are some seeds that only need to be started a only two or three weeks prior to planting week, like theses zinnias, so you really need to read the directions on the seed packs. You might be thinking, “Why not start them as early as possible so the seedlings will be further along when I plant them?” If you have a greenhouse you might get away with that. Most of us are starting our seeds on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights. Space is at a premium and the larger plants crowd each other and get leggy as they compete for the light. Leggy, spindly transplants will struggle to survive once they get outside. It’s better to have smaller, sturdier plants when it’s time to put them in the ground, so follow the directions on the seed pack and you’ll have the right size plant at the right time. There are plenty of vegetables that don’t need to wait for “planting week”to get started from seed directly in the garden. Peas seeds like to get planted at the beginning of April as soon as the soil can get worked. Spinach, chard, radishes, potatoes (from seed potatoes) and many others can also be planted before our “frost free” planting date in mid-May. Indeed, most of what we call cool weather crops can produce 2 crops per season; one from an early sowing for early summer harvest and another mid-summer sowing for a fall crop. This is something that new gardeners need to understand. I think many new gardeners have the belief that you “plant in spring and harvest in the fall”. This is true for some vegetables like potatoes and some of the larger tomato types. The real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from these crops that we seed directly in the garden. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Once you go through a season with well timed plantings you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. Learn to read the information on the seed packs and trust the seeds. This is the way to really make you garden pay maximum dividends. Thanks for the read.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATION GUIDE ELEB An Irish Classic Continues its Reign Beer drinkers typically have their preferred brand. For many, nothing beats a pint of Guinness, especially on St. Patrick’s Day. Those who have heard of but may not know the history behind this famed drink can read on to discover what sets it apart. Guinness is an Irish dry stout that was developed by Arthur Guinness. It is a derivative of the porter beers that became popular during the 18th century. A porter is a dark-colored beer so named thanks to its popularity with the river porters of London. A stronger porter was called a stout porter and eventually shortened to “stout.” Guinness started brewing ales out of the St. James’ Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland. It wasn’t until 1769 that the first Guinness ale was exported to England. In 1778, Arthur Guinness began to produce and sell the dark porter that has become the Guinness stout that many recognize today. Arthur Guinness died in 1803, shortly after his brew started to become popular. His son, Arthur II, inherited the business and carried on his father’s vision. Eventually Guinness caught on in different countries and was exported worldwide. In 1910, Guinness’ biggest bottler, E.J. Burke, begins bottling the stout right in the U.S. The company has grown ever since. As of 2007, 10 million pints of Guinness were enjoyed across the globe each day. In 2009, the company celebrated 250 years of being in business, and Guinness remains the top-selling beer in Ireland.

For several years, a portion of the Guinness-aged brew was blended with the newer brew to impart its distinctive tang. Whether that blending continues today is a company secret. In the 20th century, the company started using roasted, unmalted barley to give the stout a burnt flavor. The frothy head that forms on Guinness is created by mixing it with nitrogen while it is poured. Nothing says St. Patrick’s Day like a pint of Guinness. Legal-aged drinkers can visit their neighborhood pub and enjoy the stout this year.

Did You Know? The first Saint Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City and not on the Emerald Isle. In 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English military became the first to hold a Saint Patrick’s Day parade in what would eventually become the United States of America. The parade was organized to give Irish soldiers a chance to reconnect with their fellow Irishmen while also celebrating their customs and heritage despite being overseas. The parade also had more profound effects, increas-

ing Irish patriotism among American immigrants with Irish ancestry. That growing patriotism soon led to “Irish Aid” societies, including the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each of these groups followed the Irish soldiers’ lead, hosting their own annual parades, many of which featured bagpipes, which were originally most popular in Scotland but have since become a symbol synonymous with Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations. Eventually, the New York-

based Irish Aid societies decided to unite their parades and the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade was born. That parade remains one of the world’s most well known and popular Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations and routinely involves more than 150,000 participants, many of whom are not of Irish descent. Now a five-hour-long procession, the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade typically draws as many as three million spectators along the city’s famed Fifth Avenue.
