I know that it is hard to believe, but in only a few short weeks we’ll be out in our yards cleaning up and planning our summer gardens. This is a great time to get reacquainted with your yard. Before you set foot in a nursery to select plants for your landscape, you need to understand conditions in your yard. I call this “Learning Your Yard”. Gardening success starts with knowing how much light a plant needs and where conditions in your yard match up with the plant’s requirements. I’ve spent a lot of time helping folks with plant selections. One of the first questions I must ask before I can make logical recommendations is, “What direction does your house face?” More often than you would believe, the answer I get is “the road”. Obviously this isn’t the information I’m looking for. I’m simply trying to deduce how much sunlight the site will potentially receive. The largest factor influencing conditions in your yard is the house. Each wall faces a different direction, and each direction has different qualities of light and exposure that determine which plants will grow and thrive in that location. Let’s examine the growing conditions of walls facing the four cardinal compass points. The east-facing wall is exposed to the sunrise so it will get morning sun until about noon and then shade for the rest of the day. That means that this side of the house will get about 6 hours of direct sun a day during the growing season. This morning sun is considered the most “balanced” light of the day. It lacks the hot, infrared quality of afternoon sun. Plants that require shady conditions may be able to tolerate 3 or 4 hours of eastern exposure whereas the same amount of western or afternoon sun would be too hot for shade loving plants. The east-facing wall is also the most sheltered area in the yard. The house acts as a windbreak; protecting this area from the cold, dry prevailing wind that blows from the west and northwest in winter. This dry winter wind is the worst enemy of rhododendron, azaleas, holly and other broadleaf evergreens making the east-facing wall the location of choice for this family of plants. The south-facing wall of the house provides the sunniest exposure possible with twelve or more hours of direct sun per day. All of this sun makes it the perfect location for most flowering shrubs as well as sun-loving annuals and perennials. Plants that require full sun will need at least seven hours of direct sun per day and the south wall will provide all that and more. Plants that require shade will overheat when planted on the south side of the house. People who love flower gardening are always thrilled to have good southern exposure. The west-facing wall gets the second half of the day’s sun from noon until sunset. Afternoon sun is much hotter and infrared than its morning counterpart. This makes it possible for many sun-loving plants to do well even though they will only get a half a day of sun when planted against a west-facing wall. Shade plants that may thrive in the morning sun will find the west-facing wall too hot. The west-facing wall is also exposed to prevailing wind that blows from the west and northwest so, even though light conditions might be appropriate for broadleaf evergreens, winter wind will make this a tough location for them. The north-facing wall gets less direct sunlight (in fact none) than any other location against the house. This and the fact that it is directly exposed to drying north winds in winter make this one of the most challenging areas to plant. Lack of direct sun makes it impossible to grow most flowering shrubs and roses will never do well. Naturally the north wind will make it impossible for broadleaf evergreens to survive this location. There are some junipers and other durable evergreens that can live here. The greener the plant the better, since gold or blue evergreens need more sun than a north-facing wall will provide to maintain their color. Shade loving perennials and annuals are good choices to brighten up this difficult wall. Of course, few houses face exactly south, north, east or west. If your house faces southeast, for instance, it will have a combination of east and south wall qualities. Then there are the other factors that will influence the “micro-climates” within your yard. There may be a large shade tree on the south side of the house so, instead of getting full sun all day, that side of the house may only get direct sun for a couple of hours. There may be a fence or evergreen hedge to the west of your yard that blocks the wind from that direction making it possible to plant rhododendrons there. These are the variables that you’ll need to learn to make logical plant selections and take best advantage of your garden spaces. The most successful gardeners are those who understand what their yard has to offer and learn to work with it. Take the time to observe the way the sunlight moves across your yard, the path the wind takes and the other variables that affect your little piece of the planet. Then you’ll be able to shop at the garden center in with your yard’s qualities clearly in mind….and you won’t find someone asking you, “Now, when you’re standing in your front doorway, where does the sun come up?” Thanks for the read.

EYES ON HEALTH by Lawrence Cusma, OD 9 Gleason Road Scotia, NY 12302
Eyes On Health
Eye twitching, eyelid tics and spasms are fairly common occurrences in today’s world. Usually only the bottom eyelid is affected, but the top lid can also twitch. Most eyelid twitches come and go, although some patients report them lasting as long as weeks or even months. The exact cause of eye twitching is unknown, although they have been associated with increased stress, high caffeine intake, alcohol, dry eyes, fatigue or excessive squinting. It can also be the result of reading or working on a computer for a prolonged period of time. Eyelid twitching is often a sign that a person needs to take a break from what they are doing and give their eyes a break. Sometimes applying warm compresses to the twitching eye and gentle massage of the eyelid can help in relieving symptoms. Sometimes a good night’s sleep is all that is needed. For eyelid twitches lasting 2 or 3 days, over-the-counter oral or eye drop antihistamines may offer some relief, as the antihistamine may slow down the muscle contractions, or twitching, making it less annoying. More serious forms of eyelid twitching are caused by neurological conditions such as blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm. These conditions are much less common and should be diagnosed and treated by an eye doctor.

How to choose a builder (MS) -- Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experience. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same. Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospective homeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own. * Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for istself. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former
customers ready and willing to offer their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red flag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off. * Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be flexible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be. * Look for a builder who does more than build. A good builder should do more than just build. A builder should provide a network of qualified professionals to make the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects and engineers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is

both respected in the community and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be.
* Don’t build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a resale, so make the most of your opportunity and use only top-ofthe-line construction materials and features and choose a builder with experience in working with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don’t sacrifice on quality when building a new home.

Though the job market has improved in recent years, many men and women are still out of work. Perhaps most troubling, many of those people are age 55 and older who are fearful of an uncertain future and a job market where they are seemingly overlooked. According to a 2012 study from the Government Accountability Office, the number of long-term unemployed people age 55 and older has more than doubled since the onset of the recession.

* Start working. If you are mired in long-term unemployment and spend every day at home, get out and start working. Volunteering is a great way to lift your spirits, network with other professionals and maybe even learn of employment opportunities you won’t hear about on the couch at home. And volunteering, be it with a charity or a professional organization, is a great way to revive your resume and continue to add accomplishments despite your unemployment.
many other unemployed men and women your age likely highlight on their resumes. Instead, focus on specific achievements and accomplishments and reduce the emphasis you place on job tasks. Achievements tend to stand out above titles, and men and women over 50 likely have achieved more than younger, less experienced applicants.
EMPLOYMENT
For many unemployed men and women over the age of 50, the harsh reality of a job market that does not value their experience or skill set is deeply disconcerting. But as difficult as the job market can be for older men and women, it’s not impossible to find a job, though it might take some ingenuity and perseverance.

Job hunting tips for men and women over 50
* Don’t limit yourself. Those who were victimized by layoffs should expand their job searches to more than just their previous fields. While it’s definitely a good idea to maintain contacts in your old field and routinely look for openings in that field, it’s also a good idea to examine your skill set and experience and find a new field where these things apply. Chances are your years of experience are transferable to many fields, and redirecting your job hunting efforts to a new line of work might yield opportunities you are not even aware existed. * Embrace the 21st century. Many companies or organizations mistakenly assume that the digital age has passed older workers by. Workers in their 50s might be unfairly categorized as dinosaurs with no grasp of mobile technology or the latest software programs. But those applicants who can demonstrate their proficiency in the latest technologies, including mobile technologies like smartphones, tablets and social media, can put themselves above fellow applicants.
* Emphasize your age. Many unemployed men and women over 50 tend to look at their age as a hindrance that is preventing them from finding gainful employment. But your age can be an advantage, as many organizations find older applicants are more reliable and need less time to adapt than younger applicants with less experience. When emphasizing your age as a positive, don’t focus on job titles, which
* Think small. Smaller companies wherein employees tend to wear many hats are more likely to value experience than a larger company. By the age of 50, many professionals have vast experience in a host of different positions, and that versatility is likely to appeal to a small company looking for employees who can multitask.
Finding a job after the age of 50 isn’t easy. But taking a broad approach and emphasizing as opposed to downplaying your experience might help you stand out among a crowded pool of applicants.

Have you ever wondered how some people are such wizards on iPads, Droids, and other mobile tools, busily posting away on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and all sorts of strange sites with exotic names? You’re not alone. I confess it wasn’t all that long ago when I was scared to death of delving into the social media world. Today, digital communication is my number one method of reaching friends, family, colleagues, and even employees! Many of the Chamber’s programs are now Pete Bardunias, directed by digital communications. For example I can put out a call for volunteers or an event announcement President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County on Facebook and quickly get a large response. The key is to know and understand the best digital applications for your situation. To help business owners and interested citizens figure that out, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County and the Burnt Hills – Ballston Lake Business and Professionals’ Association (BPA) are proud to present a seminar entitled “Digital Communications: Building Your Arsenal To Mobile & Online Success”. This presentation, featuring local experts, will take place at the Ballston Spa National Bank building, 990 State Route 67 in Ballston Spa, on Wednesday, March 6th from 8-9:30AM. Panelists include Peter Dean of RenderTribe, a Saratoga Springs-based digital marketing company, Kim Hickok of Web Instinct, a web development company, and Rick Noel, of eBizROI, an internet marketing service provider. The discussion will be moderated by Nigar Hale, MBA, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County’s Vice President of Marketing and Membership Development, and President of the American Marketing Association, Capital Region Chapter. This is a great cast of experts, all heavily involved in the southern Saratoga business community and well versed in the most effective digital communications strategies for local entrepreneurs. Admission is $10.00 for Chamber and BPA members, $20.00 for the general public or non-member business representatives. To RSVP for the seminar, please call 518-371-7748 or visit www.southernsaratoga.org .
