Asiatic hybrids are the first of the lilies to flower in early summer. They are also the most cold tolerant of all lilium forms. Asiatics also mature and reproduce rapidly, making them a rewarding choice for those just starting to dabble in lily growing. They are available in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, and yellows of every shade. Some feature solid colored petals while others are ornately speckled. Asiatics are not strongly scented but come in a range of sizes from 2’ to 5’!

To find fragrance, we must sniff out the Oriental lily hybrids. Although not quite as winter hardy as their Asiatic cousins, many Oriental varieties are hardy in zones 4 and 5; hardy enough to thrive in our area. Oriental lilies will produce some of the largest, showiest flowers that you could expect this side of the tropics. A sub-group of the Oriental lilies are the Imperial hybrids. Imperial lilies produce large, sometimes huge flowers on sturdy stems. The Imperial Gold strain, for instance, produces 5” to 7” fragrant flowers on plants up to 7’ tall. That’s right, 7’! Those who travel the tropics and return whining that we can’t grow anything to compare should wake up and smell the lilies!

All lilium varieties grow from bulbs. You’ll start seeing them in garden centers in March. They’ll be offered bare-root in plastic bags. Shop for them early so you can pick out the fattest ones from the group offered. The fatter the bulb, the better the plant. Plant your lilies as soon as the ground has thawed. Choose a location in full sun and make sure it’s a spot that doesn’t puddle up after a heavy rain. Dig your holes about 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall. As usual, I’ll insist that you add bone meal to the planting hole. After enjoying your lilies for 3 or 4 years, you’ll notice that you’re getting more plants and flowers but they aren’t as tall as they used to be. This is a signal that they’re crowded and need to be dug and divided. This can be done in fall after frost or early spring when they’ve just started to sprout from the soil (adding more bone meal of course).

There are many more lilies than the two mentioned here. They’re showy and very easy to grow making them a great choice for the novice or experienced gardener who wants to impress friends and neighbors.

Another of my favorite bulbs available in packages this time of year are the irises. Irises generally flower early in the season so they really stand out as a harbinger of the warm days of summer to come. Like the lilies, irises are easy to grow and multiply quickly; attributes that make them welcome in my flowerbeds.

The thousands of modern iris varieties are descendants of the approximately 150 species that are found growing naturally around the world. They grow from tuberous rootstock called rhizomes. In early spring (any day now) you’ll find them for sale in the garden center bare-root in plastic bags. When you’re shopping for iris rhizomes, don’t just look at the pretty picture on the package. Inspect the rhizomes through the bag. Feel them. They should be firm to the touch and show no signs of mold. Pick out the biggest and fattest of the bunch (a good argument for shopping early). The bigger the rhizome the better the flowers. If you can’t plant them right away, just store them in a cool spot until the ground thaws. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises are most commonly found in bare root offerings.

The popular Bearded Irises come in almost any color combination imaginable. They’ll range in height from about 15” to 36”. Mature Bearded Irises will have 3 to 5 flowers on each stem that opens in early spring.

Dwarf Bearded Iris varieties grow to heights of no more than 8” or so. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises prefer to be planted in full sun in soil that’s been enriched with plenty of organic matter. The area should be well drained to avoid rotting rhizomes.

R. P.’s JUNK REMOVAL: Will clean out whole house estates, garages, basements, barns; or one truckload. Cheap rates! Free estimates. Quick service. 258-3879.

The easy-to-grow Siberian irises have been gaining in popularity. This is due to its ability to grow in locations that are drier than other irises prefer. Siberian Irises have narrower leaves and smaller flowers than other iris varieties. They’ll do best when planted in full sun or partial shade. Like other irises, Siberian Irises prefer acidic soil with lots of organic matter but are more forgiving of less-than-ideal conditions.

The lilium segment of the larger Liliacae family contains some of the showiest flowers to be found anywhere, and many of the thousands of cultivars thrive in our northern climate including two of my favorites: Asiatic and Oriental Hybrids.

Later in spring, Japanese and Siberian irises will appear in the garden center as potted perennial plants rather than bareroot rhizomes. Japanese Irises are some of the tallest Iris groups with some cultivars getting as tall as 4’. Japanese irises can tolerate some light shade and perform best when planted in an area with damp acidic soil. Along a stream or a boggy pond bank would be a great spot for Japanese Irises.

Right about now the packaged dormant bulbs are arriving at the garden centers. Among them will be one of my favorites: the easy-to-grow lilies. I add more every year and am still amazed at how quickly they establish themselves and multiply. No wonder I love them so much.

Another iris will appear at the garden center late in spring in the display of plants for water gardening. Yellow Flag or Water Flag Irises grows to a height of about 3’. The flowers of this moisture loving iris are bright yellow sometimes highlighted with purple veins. The bluish green leaves contrast nicely with the bright yellow flowers. Variegated cultivars are available that have yellow striped leaves in spring that gradually turn green as summer progresses. Yellow Flag Irises should be planted in organic-rich, damp areas. It is a bog plant that will do poorly if planted where it dries out at all.

Irises mature quickly so, be ready to divide them every few years. An overgrown group of irises will form a ring as the original plants die out in the center. Dig these clumps up in early spring and divide by chopping into several smaller clumps and replanting. Make sure to freshen up the soil with more organic matter before replanting.

Irises as a group are one of my favorites. They’re easy and prolific and, since they flower early in the season, they’ll chase those winter blues away long before we see signs of life from most of our garden plants. Give them a try; you’ll be glad you did. Thanks for the read.

World’s Top Coin Collectors in Town Next Week to Purchase All Types of Coins! By DAVID MORGAN STAFF WRITER

ICCA will be placing ads in newspapers, radio and running television spots next week asking people to bring in any old silver and gold coins made before 1965. Those that bring in their coins will be able to speak with collectors one on one and have their coins looked at with an expert set of eyes. With the help of these ICCA members, offers will be made to those that have coins made before 1965. Offers will be made based on silver or gold content and the rarity of the coins. All coins made before 1965 will be examined and purchased including gold coins, silver coins, silver dollars, all types of nickels and pennies. Those that decide to sell their coins will be paid on the spot. If you are like a lot of people you might have a few old coins or even a coffee can full lying around. If you have ever wondered what they are worth now might be your chance to find out and even sell them if you choose. They could be worth a lot according to the International Coin Collectors Association also known as ICCA. Collectors will pay a fortune for some coins and currency for their collections. If it is rare enough, one coin could be worth over $100,000 according to Eric Helms, coin collector and ICCA member. One ultra rare dime, an 1894S Barber sold for a record $1.9 million to a collector in July of 2007. While that is an extreme example, many rare and valuable coins are stashed away in dresser drawers or lock boxes around the country. The ICCA and its collector members have organized a traveling event in search of all types of coins and currency. Even common coins can be worth a significant amount due to the high price of silver and gold. says Helms. Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes and worth many times their face value. Recent silver markets have driven the price up on even common coins made of silver. Helms explains that all half dollars, quarters and dimes made before 1965 contain 90% silver and are sought after any time silver prices rise. Right now it’s a sellers market he said. The rarest coins these collectors are looking for include $20, $10, $5 and $2 1/2 gold coins and any coin made before 1850. These coins always bring big premiums according to the ICCA. Silver dollars are also very sought after nowadays. Other types of items the ICCA will be purchasing during this event include U.S. currency, gold bullion, investment gold, silver bars, silver rounds, proof sets, etc. Even foreign coins are sought after and will be purchased. Also at this event anyone can sell their gold jewelry, dental gold or anything made of gold on the spot. Gold is currently trading at over $1,100.00 per ounce near an all time high. Bring anything you think might be gold and the collectors will examine, test and price it for free. If you decide to sell, you will be paid on the spot – it has been an unknown fact that coin dealers have always paid more for jewelry and scrap gold than other jewelers and pawn brokers. So whether you have one coin you think might be valuable or a large collection you recently inherited, you can talk to these collectors for free and if your’re lucky you may have a rarity worth thousands. Either way there is nothing to lose and it sounds like fun!

Weather & Arthritis Pain CAPITAL REGION – Arthritis Foundation of Northeastern New York encourages you to get your local weather and arthritis index with one click. People with arthritis often claim they can predict the weather, based on their joint pain level, and with good reason. Studies show a variety of weather factors can increase pain, especially changes. Watch for any changes in Barometric pressure (especially falling) and Temperature (especially lowering). You can find what your Arthritis Index will be by going to www.arthritistoday.org and click on the “Arthritis Index link and type in your zip code. It will provide you with a color-coded wheel indicating what someone may expect in joint pain level based upon his or her local weather. The index, which is five levels, from low intensity to high can be a useful tool in dealing with pain management. The Arthritis Index is based on a proprietary forecast by the meteorologists at www.AccuWeather.com. (A)

If you don’t consume enough Vitamin A, you can develop nyctalopia (night blindness) and / or dry eyes. VITAMIN B2 (RIBOFLAVIN): Necessary for development of healthy skin and eye tissue. This vitamin is found in green vegetables, ¿sh, liver, cheese and milk. NIACIN (NICOTINIC ACID): Without niacin, Vitamin B2 cannot function properly. Niacin is found in whole grains, enriched bread and cereals, yeast and lean meat. For further information, call our of¿ce at 399-6368

Where Can You Find Designer Brands Such As Chanel, Hermes, Gucci and Louis Vuitton For Up To A Third Off The Retail Price? Worth Repeating, Of Course. What’s That? Worth Repeating, an upscale women’s clothing consignment shop, opened for business on January 6, 2001. Tracey Harris felt that there was a need for a very nice consignment shop in our area. When space became available in Socha Plaza, Tracey jumped at the opportunity to open her own shop. Ann Marie Chamberlain joined Worth Repeating 7 years ago, with 18 years of consignment shop experience. Worth Repeating is different from most other ladies consignment shops. They only take in “up-todate” items. Every item a consignor brings in is entered into the computer, so they know immediately if an item has sold and how much is owed to the consignor. You never have to worry when you leave consignments at Worth Repeating. Tracey and Ann Marie are proud that they run a very friendly shop, where customer service is their #1 priority. Stop in at Worth Repeating to say “hi” and see the latest in Spring and Summer Fashions! Open: Tuesday - Friday 10am - 5pm; Saturday 10am - 4pm; Closed Sunday and Monday
