Alplaus United Methodist Church Good Friday Service

ALPLAUS - The Alplaus United Methodist Church, 1 Brookside Ave. 12008, invites you to join them on Friday, March 30, at 7:30pm for a “Tenebrae” Service. All are welcome! The Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” dates from medieval times. Tenebrae was originally a series of sung services in monastic communities constituting morning and evening prayer, held daily Wednesday through Saturday of Holy Week. In our Good Friday observance in Alplaus, scripture, song, and silence lead us in a prolonged meditation on the events of salvation following the Last Supper through the entombment of Christ. With each progressive step of the Passion, the candles are extinguished until only the one Christ candle remains. It, too, will be removed. What will happen next?

Events At Charlton Freehold Presbyterian Church CHARLTON - Charlton Freehold Presbyterian Church, 768 Charlton Road, invites the community to the following:

Books For Troops Fundraiser “Adopt-A-Box” A Huge Success

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The “Adopt-a-Box” fundraiser far surpassed its goal of $1500 to send 100 boxes of books for our troops. In fact because of the generosity and concern for the troops, in Feb. and March enough money has been raised to send over 400 boxes to our deployed troops or those recovering in VA hospitals. Your response was overwhelming. We received over 100 donations. The message to the troops that they are remembered by so many as shown so clearly by your response, will help raise their morale and provide hours of escape and entertainment which they so need. With all my heart we thank you for all the potential you have made possible by simply caring. * A note to a donor who sent anonymously many twenties, I want to let you know that we safely received your generous donation and truly appreciated it. Keep the troops in your heart and in your prayers. Ellen Keegan & Books for Troops.

PANSY

A couple of warmer days have given spring and our moods a much-needed jump start. This is the weather that Pansies love. While there is little hope that you could get a marigold or impatiens to survive the many frosts of April, pansies and Pansy

violas not only survive these cold days of early spring, they actually thrive in the cold. Frost won’t even damage the dainty blossoms of these little tough guys. After a long flower-less winter, pansies are always welcome sight when they arrive at the garden center! Put on a happy face! The name ‘Pansy’ comes from the

Pansy

French word ‘pensee’ which means ‘to think’. In the Victorian language of flowers, pansies indicate merriment and “thinking of you”. Since their flowers look so much like little faces, it is easy to attribute little personalities to them. They do look merry, don’t they?

Pansy

It’s easy to grow your own original too. In the past, violas and pansies were considered biennials meaning that during the first year of growth from seeds, no flowers are produced. It is only during the second year that flowers appear. Plant breeders have now developed pansies that will flower during the first year of growth from seed. They will also survive winter in

Speckled Lawn Violet.

sheltered locations so you can expect your pansies and violas to put on their show for a couple of years. If you let them go to seed, you may get to enjoy them even longer, although they do cross pollinate so you may get flowers far different from the ones you originally planted.

Viola

Pansies are bred from the smaller-flowered violas and tend to revert to the smaller viola flower from generation to generation. I love this kind of little surprise in the garden so some pansies usually follow me home from the garden center every spring. What better way to chase those winter blues away. A friend gave us a couple of speckled wild violets a decade

Viola

or so ago. Now they have spread throughout the lawn mixing with the blue and white ones that were already there...I feel a little bad when I have to mow them but it doesn’t seem to hinder their gradual takeover of the lawn. So get some pansies and get outside add some cool color to

Viola

our long awaited spring. Thanks for the read.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

Look at this beautiful purebred Chocolate Lab! Olive was an Olive owner surrender, as her family could not care for her anymore and

turned her over to the Vet office who also has a relationship with a rescue group in Alabama. She’s approximately 3-4 years old, spayed, heartworm negative, and weighs about 60 pounds. She is truly absolutely gorgeous, has the most friendly temperament, is great with kids and other animals, and we think she would be the perfect match for someone who is a lover of Labs and has had experience with Labs in the past!

These 5 adorable, 10 week old Boxer/Bulldog mix puppies were in a high kill shelter in the South. Another rescue had committed to them but had to back out last minute because there was no transport to get them where they needed to go. We were contacted by one of our rescue coordinators who told us the situation, and before she could even ask we said “Of course we’ll help!”. We’ve been told they are super, super sweet and get along with everyone and everything!

The Brindle Quintet

Trotter Family 4 These 4 pups are Border Collie/Shepherd mixes with outstanding markings! They are approximately 12 weeks old and will be medium sized dogs when they reach adulthood! They have been nurtured and are extremely friendly according to their Foster Mom! They were dumped as unwanted orphans and were picked up by our Alabama rescue and are now ready to go to loving furever homes!

How To Clear A Clogged Drain Home plumbing systems are designed to handle heavy usage. When everything is working as it should, toilets flush, showers drain properly, and sink basins empty of water in a snap. But when a clog is present in a system, water can quickly back up. There are various techniques to clear clogged drains. Minor clogs may be cleared without the help of a plumber or even any tools. More significant blockages will require more elbow grease. The first step to clearing a clog is to locate the problem. Drainage issues that affect a particular sink or toilet may be isolated to that fixture. Clogs that are present throughout the house may be indicative of a larger problem in the plumbing that is directing waste away from the house and into the sewer system.

KITCHENS • BATHS • PLUMBING • HEATING

Sometimes a clog can be freed by pouring boiling hot water or a combination of baking soda and vinegar down the drain. If that doesn’t help, move on to a plunger, advise the experts at This Old House. By creating pressure within the pipes, a plunger can dislodge whatever is causing the backup. If the clog seems to be further down the drain, hair or grime may have become trapped. An auger, often referred to as a “plumber’s snake,” can be inserted into the drain to remove the grime and free up the water flow. Homeowners without access to an auger can try to fish the clog out of the drain with a wire hanger.

Prepare Hvac Systems For Warmer Days Ahead

The arrival of a new season can be an exciting time. Homeowners may have renewed vigor to start home renovation projects or even tackle some cleaning and organization tasks. Before the weather starts to warm up too much, homeowners may want to evaluate their home cooling needs and ensure that all equipment is in good working order.

Spring air conditioning inspections and tuneups are essential steps in system performance. Homeowners should not take for granted that a system that performed optimally last year will do so this year when temperatures climb. Various factors, including weather damage, dust and grime, mechanical wear and tear, and even rodent or insect infestations, can compromise HVAC systems. Since HVAC systems have so moving parts, a thorough inspection of such systems can save headaches and money down the road. withmany 10 year workmanship $ coupo warranty. • Cracked Shingles $ n – tor Heating Ontario, the extreme weather conditions that come along with fall and winter Credit cards accepted. The Benefits Of Child-Safe Home Improvements All family members should be considered when home improvements are being planned, especially the youngest household residents who may not be responsible enough to avoid accidents and injuries. According to a recent Vital Signs report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidental injuries are a leading cause of death among the country’s youth — with one fatality occurring every hour from something entirely preventable. The CDC notes that the leading causes of child injury include suffocation, drowning, poisoning, fires, and falls. More can be done to keep children safe, and many strategies start at home. Install security systems A security system can be just as effective at keeping little ones inside as it is at keeping unwanted guests outside. Alarms can be set to sound anytime a window or door is breached, which can deter curious children from trying to leave the house without permission. Pair the alarm system with secure locks and high latches that can also stop children in their tracks. Remove fall hazards Safety devices installed on windows that are above ground level can keep children safe. Stair rails should be secure and in good working order. Temporary gates can block kids from getting on stairways. Improve lighting around staircases to help children and adults avoid falls, and remove any obstacles.

Suggestions When Shopping For Fencing

Fences can improve functionality of a yard and provide extra security and privacy. Some fences are decorative while others are functional. Families with children and/or companion animals also may find fencing is a necessity to keep everyone safe and corralled. With a vast array of fencing materials available, homeowners may find it challenging to decide which material is right for their properties. The following breakdown can help homeowners learn more about fencing and potentially point them in the right direction regarding which material to choose for their properties.

Budget Budget is one of the first considerations many homeowners have when installing fencing. Homeowners install fencing for various reasons. If a fence is an ornamental way to delineate property lines, a picket fence or a post-and-rail fence are simple options that can lend a homey feel to a property. These types of fences also can enhance and frame landscaping elements, such as gardens. In many area, laws require homeowners to install fencing around swimming pools. In such instances, chain link fencing that does not obstruct views of the pool might be the best choice. If security or privacy is the main desire, tall fences that make it difficult for neighbors to see into the yard may make an ideal choice. Restrictions It is important to understand local regulations before installing fencing. Communities governed by homeowners’ associations may have rules in place that dictate the type of fences that can be installed. Townships and other municipalities may have their own rules concerning fence type, property borders, fence height, and other factors that will have to be adhered to so that fencing will meet code. If such rules are not following fines may be imposed and the fence may have to be removed. Homeowners also may need permits to install fencing, whether they are hiring a contractor or doing the work themselves. Maintenance Consumer resource Angie’s List advises

Did You Know? Debris from home improvement projects can often be recycled. According to Waste Management, the largest residential recycler and renewable energy provider in North America, common construction materials such as concrete, porcelain, tile, lumber, metals, masonry, plastic, carpet, and insulation can potentially be recycled. When recycled, debris from construction projects may ultimately be used in various ways to benefit the planet. For example, such debris may used as inerts that become road base, while clear wood may be transformed into mulch or biomass fuel. Crushed concrete can go on to live a second life as gravel or become dry aggregate for new concrete. Homeowners who want to recycle as much of their home improvement project debris as possible can work with Waste Management and/or their contractors to ensure the materials they no longer need continue to be put to good use.

Quality Doesn’t Mean More Expensive

Not so long ago many homeowners were racing to outfit their homes with home theater spaces. If spaces allowed, homeowners would transform rooms into dark, theater-like retreats, complete with large screens, surround sound and reclined seating. Interest in such spaces has waned in recent years, with many homeowners opting for media rooms instead. So what is the difference between these spaces? According to HGTV, a home theater is a room designed to replicate the experience of the cinema. A media room is a multipurpose space where people can gather to enjoy any type of media, from TV to music to gaming systems. Home theaters tend to limit activity to watching movies. However, homeowners interested in more versatile paces may find media rooms are much more practical. A media room is an option for families who want a theater experience in common areas or open-concept living spaces, says Digitech Custom Audio and Video System Integration Specialists. Media rooms frequently feature comfortable, customizable seating, rather

Various design layouts are possible, including furniture that conceals electronics so the media room can be an entertainment lounge one minute and a theater the next. Because media rooms are not as isolated as home theaters, the acoustics in such rooms may be compromised. That’s a disadvantage for homeowners who have invested heavily in sound systems for their

Homeowners who like to entertain while watching or listening to media may prefer the flexibility of media rooms, which make it easy to stream movies and music and play games.

Did You Know? City dwellers looking to buy rather than rent an apartment may come across real estate listings categorized as “co-ops.” While co-ops can exist anywhere, Realtor.com notes that they are most common in big cities, comprising as much as 75 percent of the housing inventory in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Co-op is short for “cooperative,” and people who buy into a co-op are not technically buying property but shares in an entity that owns the property where investors will ultimately live. The bigger the apartment in the building, the more shares the buyer will own. Residents of a co-op typically elect fellow residents to serve on the co-op board. That board is tasked with making a host of important decisions, including choosing who will and will not be allowed to join the cooperative. Coop boards may require that applicants meet certain financial requirements. Unlike buying a single-family home, duplex, townhouse, or condominium, people interested in buying into a co-op may have put down no less than 20 percent the value of the apartment where they hope to live. Co-op dwellers will also be expected to pay monthly maintenance fees that go toward insurance, taxes and other building expenses.

What Is The Tiny House Movement?

The tiny house movement has transformed the way many people look at housing and how it can help them downsize not only their residences, but also their lives. Living small has been embraced as an eco-friendly way to cut costs and simplify life. According to the tiny house resource The Tiny Life, the typical American home is 2,600 square feet, while the typical tiny house is between 100 and 400 square feet. Many tiny homes are smaller than the average urban apartment. Proponents of the small house movement say that living the tiny life isn’t really a sacrifice, but a way to experience a simpler, fuller life that frees them from expensive mortgage payments and unnecessary clutter. One of the advantages of tiny house living is that buyers are often able to buy their homes (whether stationary or mobile) outright, eliminating the need to finance their purchases. Tiny homes also boast much lower utility bills than more traditional homes. Outfitting tiny homes with woodburning appliances can keep heating costs to a minimum. In some instances, tiny homes are completely off the grid, harvesting electricity through solar panels and employing rain-capturing technology to supply water. According to the resource Living Big in a Tiny House, the tiny house movement is eco-friendly. Small homes create much smaller carbon footprints than large homes. In addition, the resources needed to build and sustain such homes pales in com-

Furthermore, with less interior space, residents of tiny homes are less likely to acquire items they don’t necessarily need, reducing clutter and saving money. The following statistics, courtesy of The Tiny Life, paint a picture of the tiny home lifestyle: • Sixty-eight percent of tiny house people have no mortgage, and 78 percent own t h e i r home. • The average cost to build a tiny house is $23,000 for do-ityourselfers.

How To Control Common Spring Pests Just when winter thaws out and people are anxious to enjoy the blooming flowers and luscious lawns of spring, pesky pests can appear and impact comfort levels and safety. Many pests resume their levels of activity as spring draws closer and temperatures warm up. The presence of these insects and rodents may cause problems in and around a home, which makes it essential to recognize them and avoid issues. The following are some of the more common spring pests and how to remedy infestations.

Pavement ants Pavement ants are some of the most common pests residents encounter inside and outside of their homes. These ants are light brown to black with appendages that are lighter than the rest of their bodies. Small in stature, pavement ants have parallel lines on their heads and thorax, according to pest extermination company Orkin.

Although pavement ants nest outdoors, they can enter homes through small crevices in search of food scraps. Their large colonies may not disappear until treatment is introduced. Keep foods in tightly sealed containers, clear counters and floors of crumbs, and address water sources, such as leaks. Pesticides may be needed in extreme conditions.

Fleas Fleas are tiny, jumping, biting pests that must find a host upon which to live. As ectoparasites, they feed on blood while living on the body of living hosts. Pets can bring fleas (Continued)

inside the yard and home in warm weather. According to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program, flea larvae develop more quickly at higher temperatures. At normal room temperatures, the entire life cycle of a flea is about 1 8 days. Several f l e a control products are avail-

able to control fleas on cats and dogs. There also may be powders and sprays to alleviate flea infestations in the home. Vacuuming is also very effective in killing larvae in the carpet and at picking up adults. Wasps An errant wasp, hornet or yellow jacket may have survived winter and ridden out the colder temperatures within a home. Once the weather warms, queens will begin to look for places to lay eggs and establish colonies. Treating areas where wasps are seen entering and leaving the home is key. Seal holes as soon as possible. Although wasps help control other insect populations, their painful stings and potentially aggressive nature can make them challenging to have around a home. If a nest is found,

hire a professional to remove it. Spiders Many spiders are not harmful enough to humans and pets to be much of a problem. In fact, spiders can be helpful to have around to control the populations of other insects. Still, many homeowners would prefer these web-slinging friends remain outdoors. Therefore, sealing cracks in a home’s foundation and repairing small openings around windows and doors can help keep spiders out. Also, alleviating moisture issues in basements, garages or attics may keep out other bugs that would be prey to spiders. Homeowners can take the steps necessary to cut down on pests in and around their homes

Reduce Injuries During Diy Projects Accomplishing a do-it-yourself home repair or renovation can elicit feelings of pride. DIY projects can be cost-effective and completed on homeowners’ unique time schedules. Although people can do many repairs themselves, using the wrong tools or equipment, or having insufficient knowledge of the task at hand can increase the risk of injury. The home security resource A Secure Life says that more than 18,000 Americans die every year from injuries that take place in the home. Unintentional injuries can be traced to many factors, but making repairs around the house can contribute to accident risk. Falls, electrical shocks, broken glass, carpentry tools, and carrying overly heavy loads repeatedly result in injury, says The Home Depot. Recognizing these potential hazards and always employing safe tactics can help keep DIYers stay healthy. • Ladder safety: A fall from even a few feet can cause severe injuries and even death. Ladders should always be put on a level, stable surface. Individuals should not climb higher than the second rung on a step ladder or the third rung on an extension ladder.

can impair function when using power tools. • Working with electricity: An electric shock occurs when a person is exposed to a source of electricity and the charge runs through the body. It can cause burns, cardiac arrest, changes to heartbeat, and even neurological injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. DIYers should take precautions anytime they are working with electricity, including turning off the supply of electricity to the outlet or fixture being worked on.

• Tools: Every tool has the potential to cause injury. This injury risk increases when tools are not used properly. Before a tool is used, it’s important to read the instructions.

• Heavy loads: It is important to exercise caution when moving around heavy loads. A friend or family member can help with the transfer of building materials or to relocate furniture.

• Wear protective gloves. Gloves can help protect against burns, electrocution, slippery grip, and even deep cuts or finger amputation when using sharp tools. Gloves also are essential when handling broken glass.

Injuries can derail home renovation projects if safety measures are ignored.

• Power tools: Power tools have momentum and torque behind them to make fast work of various jobs. If using power tools, DIYers should ensure they are the right tools for the job, not something that is handy or a quick fix. Power tools should only be used if a person can devote attention to the task and stay focused. That means never consuming alcohol, drugs or medications that

Our concert features John Rutter’s “The Gift of Life: Six Canticles of Creation.” The performance is Friday, 6/15/18, 7:30pm at the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville. 5 Effective Ways To Alleviate Stress Stress affects everyone at some point in their lives and does not discriminate based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, economic status, or age. The American Institute of Stress says job-related stress costs businesses millions of dollars each year due to unanticipated absences. In fact, work is the foremost source of stress for many adults. Although not all stress is bad and stress responses can motivate people to perform more effectively, repeated stress is a problem. The National Institute of Mental Health says routine stress that becomes chronic can suppress immune system functions, disrupt digestion, adversely affect sleep, and cause abnormal changes in reproductive systems. People who have chronic stress are often prone to frequent and severe viral infections, like colds and the flu. Repetitive stress may be the

most difficult to recognize because it often becomes a part of daily life. Managing stress and anxiety involves finding techniques that work for each individual. While not every approach works for everyone, the following are five effective means to managing stress.

1. Exercise: The American Psychological Association says research continues to confirm the benefits of exercise in regard to combatting stress. Regular exercise has long-term benefits, but even a 20-minute exercise session during a stressful time can produce an immediate effect that lasts a few hours. 2. Deep breathing: Mindful breathing can be effective and only takes 10 minutes. Men and women battling stress can sit in a comfortable position with their eyes closed and imagine themselves in a relaxing place while slowly breathing in

and out.

3. Take a break: Removing oneself from a stressful situation for a little while can be helpful. A brief break of 15 to 20 minutes can provide a sense of calm.

4. Cognitive-behavioral therapy: Harvard Medical School defines cognitivebehavioral therapy, or CBT, as a process of changing unhealthy thinking in order to change emotions. Therapists will identify negative thinking patterns and help patients learn to automatically replace them with healthy or positive thoughts.

5. Support network: Simply having someone to talk to can help tame stress. People should surround themselves with others they trust who are good listeners. These can be friends, family members or professional therapists. Talking oneself through stressful situations can provide relief.

Full time workers in the construction field needed. No experience necessary, benefits package, competitive wages and NYS approved apprenticeship program. Valid drivers license and vehicle a must. Need extra fun money or paying bills. Try Avon. Call (518) 654-8205. Text (845) 242-5342. Just want a brouchure? Call or text.

Immediate opening for part time medical office assistant in the Scotia area. Duties incl. patient care, assisting with in-office surgical procedures, and some data entry. Please call (518) 399-7782.

Stress is a growing problem that can adversely affect one’s health in various ways. Relieving stress involves identifying the stressor and taking a proactive approach before symptoms of stress worsen.

The NHTSA notes that vision is affected for drivers whose blood alcohol content is as low as .02, which is well within the legal limit. • Color distinction: Alcohol can reduce drivers’ ability to distinguish colors, which can put the lives of drivers, their passengers, pedestrians, and fellow motorists in serious jeopardy. In addition to compromising their ability to understand stoplights, alcohol can make it hard for drivers to see road markings, traffic signs and other vehicles’ turn signals. • Reaction time: Alcohol impairs drivers’ ability to process information quickly, which can make them especially vulnerable to sudden developments on the road, such as other drivers stopping suddenly or pedestrians crossing roadways outside of crosswalks.

sume that consuming a couple of drinks won’t impair their ability to safely operate a vehicle. But the NHTSA points out that alcohol and other drugs reduce various skills drivers need to safely operate motor vehicles. Even a slight reduction in any of the following skills can prove deadly to those who drive while consuming alcohol and/or the people with whom they share the road.

• Judgment: The NHTSA notes that alcohol adversely affects areas of the brain that control judgment. Even the most experienced drivers may not judge situations like traffic or poor road conditions after consuming alcohol as they might when they have not had a drink. Momentary or seemingly minor lapses in judgment when behind the wheel can prove deadly. • Vision: Few drivers would

willingly drive with blurred vision, but that’s precisely what drivers do when getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, which can blur vision. Vision helps drivers determine the distance between their vehicles and objects such as other cars, medians and pedestrians. Alcohol reduces drivers’ ability to accurately assess that distance and also can adversely affect drivers’ ability to determine
