So far, spring weather has given us a real roller coaster ride. It looks like we’ll have magnolias, forsythia, flowering crabapples and azaleas all blooming at the same time rather than their normal, overlapping progression. While we’re all anxious to plant, it’s important to remember that the most popuplar vegetables grown are descendents of varieties that were discovered (or plundered, depending on your view of 16th century Spanish colonialism) in Central America. Tomatoes, squash, peppers, beans, corn and many others were staple crops in the empire of the Aztecs. While Cortez and his conquistadors had no appreciation of Aztec culture, they, along with their Jesuit partners, were “religious” about sending anything of value back to the king and queen at home. While the wealth of gold has long been spent, the horticultural treasure continues to feed and delight us. The diet of Europe before the “discovery” of the New World must have been very bland indeed. The hallmark of Italian cooking is tomato sauce yet; they didn’t cultivate tomatoes in Italy until after 1600! We associate potatoes with the Irish but there were no potatoes in Ireland until they were brought back from the New World. There WAS wheat in Europe so, as far as I can figure, they were real “meat & bread” folks until the ships returned from this side of the Atlantic. The point of all this is that many of our vegetable crops, with their Central American roots need lots of heat to perform well in our northern climate. The wise gardener will wait until the middle of May to begin planting tender annual flowers and vegetables. Even then, gardeners need to have a couple of trick up their sleeve to provide extra warmth for these tropical vegetables. To get our tomatoes to mature and start producing sooner, we need to increase the air and soil temperatures around our transplants. You can use hotcaps that you’ll buy at the garden center or make your own from plastic water or milk jugs. To make a hotcap from a plastic jug just take a sharp knife and slice an X through the bottom of the jug. The center of the X should be in the center of the bottom of the jug. This will give you four flaps that you’ll bend outward so you can anchor the jug to the ground with rocks or long nails to keep it from blowing away. Be sure to remove the cap of the jug to allow excess heat to escape. We want to warm our transplants, not cook them. You can also cover the soil at the base of your tomatoes with a sheet of black plastic. The black plastic will warm up in the sun and trap that heat, warming the soil below. Tomatoes love warm soil.

If you use tomato cages for support, you can install them as soon as you’ve planted your tomato seedlings and wrap the cage with clear plastic. The clear plastic wrapped around the tomato cage creates a little greenhouse that’ll bring the temperature up to levels that tomatoes prefer. Leave the top of the plastic-covered tomato cage open to let excess heat escape. On nights that you expect temperatures to fall below 50 degrees, cover the tops of your “mini-greenhouses” to keep the temperature up overnight. Don’t forget to uncover them in the morning or they’ll cook. When I’m running late with my planting, there’s another trick I’ll use to get seeds (like beans) to sprout in the shortest possible time. I’ll sow them in a shallow trench with soil built up on either side of the trench. Then I’ll cover the trench with my “germinating fabric” (also known as remay). I can anchor the fabric with stones or tuck it into the soil to keep it from blowing off. The fabric will allow light and water to pass through but will trap enough heat to warm the soil, getting my seeds sprouted without cool weather delay. As soon as the seeds sprout, I’ll remove the fabric at let them enjoy the sunshine. I hope the weather cooperates and we’ll all be able to finally dig in and get the crops in. I hope I don’t hear that dreaded “F” word again until October. Thanks for the read.

Those who choose to hire a contractor can certainly get their fill of home improvement projects by watching films where homes or renovations are central to the plot. 1. “Money Pit”: No list would be complete without including this movie starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, who attempt to renovate a mansion only to be met with disaster after disaster. 2. “The Notebook”: Nicholas Sparks’ novel turned into this unforgettable, romantic film is a love story at its core. However, the renovation of a Victorian home in the Carolinas is also central to the story and makes for amazing imagery.
A Great Lineup, All Engineered And Built By Honda.
3. “Poltergeist”: This movie showcases what can go wrong when a home takes on a life of its own as malevolent ghosts take over.

4. “Under the Tuscan Sun”: While renovating a home might be considered interesting, doing so in the remote beauty of the Italian countryside makes for a much more visually appealing film. 5. “House of Sand and Fog”: A woman is evicted from her home after it is wrongly repossessed and auctioned. Together with a sheriff’s deputy the woman begins harassing the new owners of the home in an attempt to get back her residence. 6. “Field of Dreams”: Although it is not the house that is getting a makeover, but rather the fields behind this impressive farmhouse, viewers can be mesmerized by the magic that ensues afterward. Home Construction Methods Face Major Changes (MS) -- All across North America, home builders agree that the best investment -- for the occupant and for resale value -- requires adopting the newest and most advanced methods and materials. One bold option already solving high fuel costs and safety during severe wind storms is a revolutionary concrete system to replace standard wood-frame walls. “The system erects the main structure of a house (or any building) with pre-assembled ‘insulated concrete forms’,” says Todd Blyth at Nudura, a leading name in this ICF technology. “Each reinforced concrete form interlocks, like Lego, to create one monolithic wall with a thickness from 4 to 12 inches. “The method has been certified, tested and made available as an alternative to wood framing for many years,” he continued. “It is only now, however, that the numerous occupant benefits, including the ability to withstand hurricane force winds, are suddenly in the spotlight. This kind of concrete home also provides superior fire and flood protection, sound resistance, plus temperature and draft control -- and due to the insulation and durability, it can save you up to 70 percent on energy bills. You get a far stronger house with a warm and inviting atmosphere as well.” Green and beautiful

Did You Know? When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools. However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric. Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other outdoor equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Store equipment underneath and out of sight. It also will be protected from the elements.

Blyth points out that opting for an ICF home is environmentally sound as well. In addition to reducing or eliminating the drafts, cold spots and mold associated with wood, Nudura construction materials are more efficient and kinder to the natural environment due to: * Recycled materials: The interlocking forms include a unique folding web design that is manufactured from 100 percent recycled polymers and steel. * Building durability: Concrete, instead of wood framing, reduces the need for trees, and since they are one of the most durable building materials, concrete structures can be expected to stand the test of time. * Waste reduction: Building with insulated concrete forms creates less waste during the construction process, sending less to landfills. The waste that is created from ICFs is 100 percent recyclable. * Mold resistance: Laboratory tests confirm that unlike wood walls, this system does not support mold growth and the resulting health irritants that arise from airborne mold spores. * Energy performance: When combined with other energy-efficient construction methods, building with concrete significantly reduces the amount of fossil fuels needed for heating and cooling, and thus reduces the carbon footprint of everyone in the house. Even with this lifelong commitment to sustainability, there won’t be a trade-off on any of the aesthetics we desire in a dream home, Blyth explains. “On the outside of the building, the concrete walls can be finished with smart-looking brick, or they can be beautified with stone, stucco, wood, and vinyl siding. The interior is wide open to dream features as well. Innovative architectural shapes, such as arches, bay windows and specific door styles, are easily achieved with the Nudura system to meet any desired interior design.” More information is available online at www.nudura.com.

584-0670 Addressing drafts around the house Homeowners know that no home is perfect. Sometimes a home’s biggest issue can be relatively small and easy to fix, while other issues are more substantial and require a bit more time and money. Drafts around the house fall somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. Though not necessarily difficult or costly to fix, drafts can be an uncomfortable nuisance and may require a little more elbow grease than more minor issues around a house. The following are a few ways homeowners can address drafts around the house. * Check the fireplace. Homeowners with a fireplace might be inviting drafts in through their favorite feature. If the damper on the fireplace is open, drafts will enter the home. Simply close the damper and the home will likely get a lot less drafty. * Check for gaps around windows and doors. The most likely culprit if a home is drafty is gaps around windows and doors. Windows and doors that aren’t properly sized are no doubt inviting drafts into the home. The solution to this problem doesn’t have to break the bank. Instead of replacing old windows and doors, use weather stripping and press it into the gaps around the frame. This can block drafts, and you should be able to notice an immediate difference. * Hang heavier curtains or drapes. Another way to address a drafty room is to hang thick curtains or drapes in front of the window. The heavier the material, the more effective it will be at keeping cold air from circulating around the room. * Inspect the attic. If your home has an attic, that oft-forgotten room upstairs might be the source of the home’s drafts. When a home is heated, the air inside that home is pressurized, driving that air through ceiling penetrations and into the attic. This creates leaks that allow warmth to escape the house while inviting colder air in. Plug any air leaks into the attic, which should eliminate drafts as well as condensation

Benefits to Hiring a Landscaping Service The desire to have a pristine, well-manicured landscape leads many homeowners to toil outdoors for hours every weekend. Hiring a professional landscaper can free up homeowners’ time and help them ensure their yards are cared for properly. One of the benefits of hiring a landscaper is the time savings. Landscapers typically have commercial-grade equipment that can dramatically reduce the time it takes to mow and perform other maintenance tasks around your property. Furthermore, some services have multiple employees working concurrently, enabling them to tackle several projects at the same time and complete them in a fraction of the time it would take a homeowner working on his or her own. Landscapers familiar with botany and landscape design understand how to properly care for plants and trees on your property, while novice green thumbers may be unaware about when to prune trees and shrubs, at what height to cut the lawn and which plants will thrive in particular locations. Such doit-yourself maintenance may even cost more money than leaving it to a professional. Hiring a professional landscaper is, in many instances, more economical. For a certain weekly or monthly fee, homeowners receive the benefit of professional knowl-

Also, homeowners will not have the expense of purchasing the various tools and equipment necessary for lawn and garden maintenance, tools and equipment that include lawnmowers, string weeders, edgers, fertilizer, grass seed, leaf blowers, and shovels. Another benefit is the lawn will continue to be mowed whether a homeowner is home or not. During the spring and summer vacation season, it’s
easy for homeowners to overlook their lawn and garden in favor of recreation and leisure activities. Without proper watering and maintenance, lawns and gardens can brown or overgrowth can occur. But hiring a landscaping service allows homeowners to rest assured that their yards will be maintained whether they’re home or not. Hiring a local landscaping service will not only benefit homeowners, but also it will
benefit the local economy. Residents can feel comfortable knowing their lawn service will be available for calls when needed and will be familiar with the community. Also, local contractors may go the extra mile to earn your business recommendation. Hiring a landscaping service can be advantageous to homeowners who want to free up time and still enjoy a well-maintained landscape.

How to Prevent Soil Erosion Homeowners who spend time tending to their landscape are increasingly looking eco-friendly ways to maintain their lawns and gardens. Homeowners who once relied on potentially harmful pesticides to craft a lush lawn now prefer ways that don’t leave such a significant carbon footprint. Preventing soil erosion is one way to incorporate conservation into lawn and garden care. Conservation is one of many environmental practices aimed at preserving the planet’s natural resources, which include soil. Preventing soil erosion is easy and can be accomplished in a number of ways. * Don’t overwater. Some may assume that keeping soil as damp as possible keeps it healthy. However, overwatering the soil can cause runoff that washes the soil away. In addition, overwatering the soil can degrade it and contribute to erosion. Instead of overwatering, keep the soil moist but don’t overdo it. If you’re having trouble keeping soil moist, consider laying down some mulch, which helps retain moisture and deliver nutrients to the soil that keep it healthy.

* Plant trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs are friends to soil, providing shelter while their roots keep the soil in place and prevent it from easily blowing away on a windy day. It also helps soil from washing away when warm weather arrives and the landscape must be watered on a daily basis. * Create runoff barriers. Runoff barriers are edges that can be made of brick, stone or other materials that help reduce runoff. Many homeowners install runoff barriers along sidewalks and driveways to ensure the soil does not spill out onto the pavement, but these also help the soil as much as they help to keep walkways and other areas free of soil and looking tidy.

* Consider leaving some grass around the garden. Tillage is the process of preparing land to grow crops. While many homeowners don’t view their weekend gardening as growing crops, similar principles apply whether you’re growing crops on a farm or just a few vegetables in the backyard. One such principle is conservation tillage, which means leaving a portion of vegetation in the ground instead of stripping everything away before planting. For home gardeners, consider leaving a small amount of grass around the garden to keep the soil within the garden’s boundaries. It’s a principle similar to installing runoff barriers, and it can be just as effective at preventing soil erosion.

Gas Fireplaces Offer Peace of Mind
PRICES GOOD THRU APRIL 30TH
Fireplaces have long been used in residences to offer a centralized gathering area for the family and serve as a dramatic focal point that’s as much about aesthetic appeal as it is functionality. However, fireplaces also can be a source of supplemental heat, and many homeowners install a fireplace as a back-up heating source. When Hurricane Sandy pummeled the East Coast in October of 2012, tidal surges and flooding knocked out power to millions of customers across the Northeastern United States. Those power outages left people without lights, television, and perhaps most frightening, heat. Even those who had portable backup generators found they were unable to connect central heating systems to the generator because of the overwhelming power draw. Flooding shut down some city-provided steam heating services in and around New York City, putting safe alternative heating sources in high demand.

Gas fireplaces are not only decorative, but also they can be a significant source of home heat, enabling homeowners to enjoy warmth and light without the hassle of buying and handling wood. In addition, gas fireplaces produce low emissions, which means they are not always limited to areas of the home that could provide an exterior wall for a chimney. There are many types of gas fireplaces, and homeowners can customize the model they choose to meet their needs. Ventless gas fireplaces are perhaps the most versatile because they do not need to be vented outdoors or up a chimney. This means they can be located just about anywhere there is an available wall. However, these types of appliances are not allowed in all states because of concerns about carbon monoxide. But simply keeping a window open slightly during operation can greatly reduce the risk CO poisoning.

Direct vented fireplaces are installed on an outside wall and a pipe is used to vent the unit outdoors. The complexity of installation and unit designs make these more expensive than ventless options. Homeowners also can convert a wood fireplace into a gas one with the use of gas logs or a gas line exiting within the fireplace. Gas fireplace inserts that can be custom-installed in the existing cut-out of the fireplace are also available.

Managing difficult yard situations Many homeowners aim for a picture perfect lawn complete with rolling acres of soft, green grass. But Mother Nature may have other things in mind, providing homeowners with less-than-stellar growing conditions for their lawns, plants and other foliage. Frustration can mount when a yard is muddy, is especially shady or has soil that doesn’t seem to grow a thing. In such instances, homeowners may have to go the extra mile to get the yard they desire. Irrigation issues Improper drainage or low-lying areas in a yard may contribute to a muddy mess. Soil that is inhospitable for grass also may end up causing muddy patches because the grass simply does not grow. In some cases, remedying a muddy yard is easy and inexpensive. Some homeowners find that tilling the soil and amending it with a fiber mulch helps to absorb extra water and make the conditions better for lawn seeds to sprout. This also helps to aerate compacted soil that can hinder grass growth. Adding soil fill also may help to level low-lying areas that can be puddling. Some homeowners find that they need to do a little more work and spend some more money to fix irrigation issues.

Installing a draining system or having the property sloped to draw water away can sometimes be done by a homeowner but is often best left to a professional. You may need to dig trenches, and the property may need to be regraded to make a difference. Sandy soil Grass and other plants may not grow well with sandy or clay soil. Again, amending the soil is one way to remedy the problem. Although it will take some work at the outset, amending the soil can improve conditions and reduce how much maintenance the lawn needs. Digging down several inches and adding nutrient-rich filler soil will help create conditions that are better for growing. Those who are interested in planting vegetables could opt for raised garden beds above the challenging soil. Shade Sometimes a yard is problematic because of the amount of sunshine it receives. Too much sunshine can scald certain grasses, while inadequate sunshine may result in bare patches where grass won’t grow. If cost is no object, removing or planting trees to establish better growing conditions could be

an option. However, today there are many grass blends that are tailored toward specific sunlight scenarios. Homeowners may find that low-light blends will grow better in shady areas. For those who are finding no luck with grass blends, it may just be necessary to think creatively. Plant shade-loving plants, such as ferns or ground cover, where the grass won’t take. Design the landscape so it looks intentional. Flagstone and slate placed in certain areas also may mask temperamental growing areas. There are different options for managing various situations in the yard that can make growing lawn or other plants challenging. If projects are difficult, it could be smart to call in a professional.

Prevent Pressure Washing Injuries This Season Exposure to the elements can take its toll on the exterior of a home. Dirt, mold and mildew can compromise the look of a home and yard, which is why many people begin the spring season by dusting off the pressure-washing machine and making resolutions to strip the dirt off of siding, furniture and patios. However, serious injuries can result if a pressure washer is used improperly. Getting schooled in pressure-washer safety is essential to preventing a trip to the emergency room. It can be easy to underestimate the power of a pressure washer. An electric-powered machine may generate up to 1,000 pounds per square inch (psi) of water pressure. Gas-powered machines are even more dynamic, offering pressure up to 4,000 psi. That force coupled with wet surfaces can easily cause falls,
slips and abrasions. Pressure washers may even cause blindness when chemical cleaners are used in conjunction with the pressure washer. It is adviseable to leave pressure washing to a professional. However, for homeowners who do choose to try this cleaning method, safety precautions are essential. * Dress properly by donning rubber-soled shoes to prevent slips on wet surfaces. * Wear protective eyewear to shield the eyes from any projectiles or injury from the water spray itself. * Wear sturdy gloves with grips so you can have a firm hold on the nozzle while cleaning. * Be sure to read all of the safety precautions and operation instructions in the manual prior to operating the pressure washer.

* To lessen the chance of highpressure injection (HPI), which is when water and other debris penetrates the skin resulting in deep-tissue damage, broaden the spray on the nozzle so it isn’t piercing like a needle. HPI can cause infections so great that they may require amputation. * Use an extension cord that is water-resistant and acceptable for outdoor use. However, their price has made them quite rare, which might be attractive to prospective buyers when the time comes to sell the house. Durable and aesthetically appealing, metal roofing is another option that’s popular in areas they get heavy snowfall because snow does not build up on the metal like it might on other materials. The price of metal roofing varies
significantly, so homeowners considering a metal roof should do some comparison shopping before making a decision. Slate tiles are another roofing material, but one that’s very labor-intensive to install and, as a result, costly as well. But slate tiles are very durable, in some cases lasting as long as half a century or more, so homeowners who install slate tile can rest easy knowing the roof they install now will likely be the last roof they ever pay for.

How to Repair Unsightly Bald Spots in Your Lawn Lawn care aficionados know how a single bald spot can make an otherwise luscious lawn look worn down and poorly maintained. A bald spot can stick out like a sore thumb, while several bald spots can compromise a home’s curb appeal. Treating bald spots typically depends on what is causing the bald spot. Bugs, dryness, pet waste and damage from mowers are some of the more common causes of bald spots. The following is a breakdown of these different causes and how best to address each situation so you can restore your lawn to its natural beauty. Dryness A lawn can go dry because of drought in the summertime or during the winter months when there is not much rain or snowfall. Homeowners cannot change the weather, but they can help their lawn
avoid becoming the burned or yellowed turf that often results after extended periods of dryness. Fertilizing the lawn during the spring and summer is a good first step. This helps the lawn grow in healthy and thick. Once you have fertilized, don’t cut the grass too short. When grass is cut too short, the soil struggles to retain moisture, which can eventually lead to bald spots if weather conditions are dry. During especially dry periods in the summer, watering might be necessary. You won’t have to water frequently, but be sure to water deeply so the water can reach the roots of the grass.
trated nitrogen that, when applied to a lawn, can burn the grass and cause bald spots. Urine is most likely to cause bald spots, but fecal matter can as well.
Pet Waste
stroom. If this does not work, then erect a fence or some type of structure that makes it difficult for other people’s pets to access your lawn.
Waste from pets can cause bald spots on a yard. This might surprise some homeowners, but pet waste contains a high level of concen-

When it’s your own pet causing the damage, address the spots where your pet relieves itself as quickly as possible. Watering the area within eight hours can significantly reduce the risk of lawn damage by diluting the nitrogen levels. Another way to address the issue is to encourage the animal to use various spots in the yard, rather than continually using the same spot. Flush each area with water immediately after the pet is finished. If the damage is already considerable, remove the damaged grass and

reseed the spot. Mower Damage Sometimes Mother Nature and man’s best friend are not the culprit with regard to bald spots on your lawn. Human error can cause bald spots, too. Dull mower blades or grass that is cut too low can cause bald spots. Fortunately, this is easily remedied. To avoid bald spots, make sure mower blades are sharpened at the beginning of each mowing season, as dull blades damage the grass, which is then forced to use valuable nutrients to treat torn grass, weakening the lawn over time. When mowing, make sure you’re not cutting too low so the soil can retain as much moisture as possible. This will necessitate more frequent mowing, but this, too, can prevent bald spots, as it ensures those parts of the grass that contain chlorophyll will not be removed.
Bald spots can turn a pristine lawn into an eyesore. But treating bald spots can
(MS) -- Did you know: A house constructed with a concrete frame, rather than wood, delivers superior protection in wind storms? The frame is constructed with a highly lauded system of pre-assembled ‘insulated concrete forms’ (ICFs) and produces walls with hurricane and tornado impact-resistance up to 250 miles per hour. These walls are also far more sound-resistant, fire resistant, and deliver energy savings and occupant health benefits as well. By eliminating wood framing, all drafts, cold spots, and potential mold growth are virtually eliminated, according to leading ICF supplier, Nudura, and homeowners report energy bill savings up to 70 percent. Be aware that an upgrade to concrete walls is an option to be requested before construction begins. For builders, the newest efficiencies of this type requires keeping up with the latest technology and how to apply it. The switch to concrete walls represents just one of the major advancements in home construction today, so if energy savings, durability, investment value, and occupant comfort are at the top of your ‘dream home’ list, more information is available online at www.nudura.com.

Increase Storage Possibilities What homeowner has not lamented that they have many more belongings than they have storage space? In some homes, particularly in older homes, closet space and other areas to store items may be lacking. Apartment dwellers often find they’re lacking in storage space as well. But savvy homeowners can find both
permanent and temporary solutions to their home storage problems. One of the easiest ways to create storage space is to simply remove some belongings from the residence. Go through closets around the house and pick through the attic and/or garage to see if there are any items that can be discarded or donated.
Items that are broken can be discarded, while those things that still have utility can be donated or sold. The next step is to maximize the space of your existing closets. Many closets are equipped with just a shelf and a clothing rack, greatly limiting the storage potential. Investing in a closet organization system is one way to

transform a poorly utilized space. These systems can be purchased, often inexpensively, from a home improvement center. Compiled of modular racks and shelving, the positioning can be customized depending on the size of the closet. Oftentimes, the addition of shelving or another rack for hanging clothes can solve some storage issues. These closet systems also are ideal for renters because they can be installed with minimal damage and be removed when a lease expires. Homeowners may have to think vertically to solve storage solutions. Wall space may be abundant in a home where closets are not. Therefore, shelving and cabinets can be places to keep items neatly off the floor. A series of shelves can be installed next to a washing machine to keep laundry supplies organized. In children’s rooms, build bookcases the height of the room so children can store frequently used reading material and toys on the lower levels, and adults can put collectibles and mementos near the top. Hang hooks to hold hats and robes. Whenever possible, look to store items on the walls where they will keep clutter off the floor. Storage can even be created in the bathroom, where the space over the toilet can be used to hang a cabinet to store hand towels and other toiletries if the space under the sink has already been claimed. ognize the advantage of having items that serve doubleduty in their living spaces. For example, a convertible sofa can be used for sitting and then turn into a bed for overnight guests. Ottomans that have a storage compartment can house anything from throw blankets to magazines. An armoire may house the television but also have a pullout shelf that can hold a laptop computer. In the kitchen, move food items out of cabinetry and into a “pantry” you create elsewhere in the house, such as a laundry room or garage. This frees up more room for pots and pans. Cabinets that have pull-out shelving help maximize tight recesses of cabinets and keep things organized and in sight. For those with limited

Sports Eye Injuries
According to Prevent Blindness America, every year in the United States, more than 25,000 children under the age of 15 have sports-related injuries, most of which are preventable. To protect your children’s eyes while playing spring/ summer sports, follow these tips from Dr. Scott Lambert, professor of ophthalmology at Emory University and a member of the advisory council for the Pediatric Cataract Initiative: •Children in sports need protective eyewear, just as they need helmets and protective padding. Balls, bats, racquets and other flying objects, as well as finger pokes and elbow jabs can cause both temporary injuries and long-term vision problems – even cataracts and blindness. Choose protective eyewear with wraparound frames, to protect the eyes from all sides. •Regular eyeglasses and sunglasses don’t protect the eyes, because they are not strong enough to withstand flying objects and hard blows; children need protective eyewear as well as their “everyday” glasses. Sports goggles can be obtained with or without a prescription, but the lenses need to be both impactand scratch-resistant. •Sun exposure damages the eyes, so children need protection from harmful UVA rays with either good-quality sunglasses or protective eyewear. Extended exposure to UV rays have been linked to cataracts, macular degeneration and growths in the eye, including cancer. Make sure labels specify 100% UVA protection to be sure children’s eyes are properly protected. “Like” drcusma on Facebook, and get a free eyeglass cleaning kit!

Your Chamber of Commerce A Local Business Advocate Chambers of commerce have undergone many changes in recent years in the ever-changing, increasingly competitive business climate. Some traditional functions remain, and one very significant one is that of local and/or regional business advocate. The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County is proud that even though we are locally focused and very active in each of our 15 area communities, we also possess the regional strength due to our increasing membership, now Pete Bardunias, 1052 and counting. the Chamber Recently we were honored to have RoAnn Destito, President/CEO, of Southern Saratoga County Commissioner of the Office of General Services, speak in our Executive Education Center in Clifton Park, behind Price Chopper at Exit 9, discussing the salient points of Governor Cuomo’s latest state budget. The Administration is proud of its three straight on-time budgets, a feat last achieved in the early ‘80s by Governor Mario Cuomo’s administration. This budget is purported to create 300,000 new jobs, cut taxes on middle class families and small businesses, reduce costs and red tape for businesses, and build a “new” New York. There are differences of opinion as to whether this budget actually achieves these claims, but the discussion that took place at our Center was a very productive and interesting one. The Southern Saratoga chamber led several community business meetings in Waterford to develop tangible ways to assist Town and Village businesses. We also participated in town forums in Malta, Stillwater and Round Lake regarding the proposed expansion of GLOBALFOUNDRIES. When Congressman Paul Tonko paid a weekend visit to Charlton, we were there also, listening to the discussion, sharing our thoughts on various subjects, and yes, savoring the baked items contributed by local residents at the refreshment table! It’s a pleasure to work on behalf of our business community, so if you are in need of an advocate, please call me anytime at 518-3717748 or email me at pete@southernsaratoga.org.

ATTENTION
How to connect with a recruiter Finding a job when the economy is struggling is not easy. An overcrowded pool of applicants coupled with fewer jobs can make a job seeker feel like a proverbial needle in a haystack.
When men and women apply for a position, the first person to see their resumes is typically a human resources employee, a company’s in-house recruiter or even a recruiting service hired by a company to help it fill the position. This person is responsible for sifting through the many applicants and narrowing those down to a manageable number of people whom the recruiter will then interview, or recommend for an interview. (Be it over the phone or in the company’s office.) That said, grabbing the attention of a recruiter could make or break a person’s chance of landing a job. The following are a few ways individuals can help themselves gain the attention of a recruiter and increase their chances of being called for an interview.
* Recognize the importance of an effective C.V. A curriculum vitae, or C.V., is incredibly important. The C.V. an overview of your experience and any additional SIZE 3” xis1/2” SCREEN 85 lpi qualifications. Longer and more extensive than a resume, the C.V. is the first thing many prospective employers will examine. It should include a detailed summary of your background and experience, including NOTES professional associations and licenses, awards and any other information relevant to the position to which you’re applying. Include your name and contact information as well as any specific skills you have that make you a strong candidate for the position. Organize the C.V. by dates and don’t be afraid to go into too much detail, especially if those details are relevant to the job for which you’re applying. * Tailor your C.V. to each specific position. Avoid using a generic or non-specific C.V. This won’t make you stick out among the competition and the recruiter is likely to pass you over for consideration. Tailor the C.V. to each position for which you’re applying, clearly illustrating how your past experience makes you a strong candidate for the position.
* Always be prepared. If the recruiter deems you worthy of an interview, that interview could come at any time. A phone call from the recruiter could be a screening interview, so once you apply for a position, be prepared to interview at any time. Research the prospective employer and anticipate some of the questions he or she might ask you when responding to your application. Practice answering these questions so you can make a strong first impression.
* Recognize the other ways you can make an impression. A strong C.V. and an effective resume can make a great first impression, but today’s recruiters will also utilize social networking to determine your worthiness as a candidate. Applicants can help or hurt their chances with recruiters depending on how they approach social networking. Speaking ill of past employers via social networking sites is a significant red flag, as is posting comments or photos pertaining to any questionable behavior. Avoid using expletives on social networking sites as well.
