banal
funerary chapel SPRING 2013 The cemetary where this chapel is found is the Champaign, IL final resting place for people of many different faiths. Therefore, the chapel must be nondemonational and able to cater to different traditions and ceremonies. My goal was to connect the visitor to nature by allowing in lots natural light. I wanted to chapel to be a powerful and spiritual space, and thus chose noble geometry: an ellipse.

DISINTEGRATION PROCESS 0.5 year
funerary object SPRING 2013
For this exercise, the students were asked to design a biodegradable urn to be placed in the ground. I wanted to create an urn that would appear contemporary while staying true to tradition. I chose to use a traditional shape molded out of unconventional materials. The disintegration process was important to me, so I chose materials that would decay at different rates, much like the stages of loss.
1
urn begins to break apart upon entering the ground. magazine beads wick in water to begin dissolving the plaster and spreading the ashes. magazine beads begin to rot and fall away. year
magazine beads have now completely disappeared and the plaster dissolves more substantially.
5 years
finally, the plaster and magazine beads have entirely disintegrated. all that remains are the wire mesh petals.

museum of ancient life SPRING 2013 Champaign, IL
The museum of ancient life centers around an exhibition space containing the skeleton of a T-Rex. Throughout the design process, I was fixated on the idea of allowing the geometry of the exhibition space to direct the visitor. This evolved into a circular exhibition drum, which became the foundation of the project. To complement this idea, I divided the building into four separate levels, with one level for each main program. Treatment of the exterior space was also very important to me, and so I created a garden space enclosed by a curved wall, as an exterior reflection of the exhibition drum.

centre[via] FALL 2011 Paris, France
site plan
The VIA group is a Parisian furniture company. One of the main goals of the company is to find and showcase young design talent, making the exhibition hall and the grand meeting room focal points of the design. The concept of this project was the word elongation. The structure folds in on itself to pull the visitor through the exhibition space. Upon entering the building, the visitor is pulled down a long hallway and up onto a wide ramp. The ramp winds up to the main exhibition space on the second level, and then to the grand meeting room on the third floor.

musicians’ retreat SPRING 2013 Versailles, France
PARC BALBI
massing concept
The site of the musicians’ retreat is located in a park near the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, Parc Balbi. The city of Versailles hosts a Baroque music festival every year and this center was intended to create a permanent retreat for the musicians invited to the festival. The center provides lodging, practice areas, and a reception space. The site is surrounded on three sides by a ten-foot high wall. To the west sits the beautiful man-made lake, l’Piece d’eau de Suisses. I wanted to create seclusion for the residents while providing views to the surrounding park. To achieve this, I implemented wooden screens to replace the wall to the west as well as in the facades.

SPRING 2013
The concept of this
Occupy movement design workshop was
to provide ammenities for the protesters involved in the Occupy movement. The design had to be highly efficient, low-impact, and mobile. We learned that the protesters were often denied access to the city’s resources. The design had to be nearly completely self-sufficient and wasteless. My group chose to design a kitchen unit that could fold up to be transported on a small truck bed. The workshop lasted one week and I collaborated with five other French students.

sketches FALL ‘11-SPING ‘12 This series of sketches was done European travels during my junior year abroad. I was involved in an intensive sketching course which spanned both semesters. The course required me to sketch for four hours per day during various trips and breaks throughout the year. The destinations were unlimited, except for a sanctioned sketch trip at the end of the year. On that trip, I traveled to Mykonos, Santorini, and Athens, Greece. During the Greece trip, the students were encouraged to use new media. I chose to experiment with charcoal and watercolor. These sketches are done in graphite, charcoal, and watercolor.
