So wrote the 19th-century conservationist and author John Muir, who has a mountain and glacier named after him. It’s a wilderness that can only really be explored by sea or air. There are towns, of course, like the charismatic capital of Juneau, where the Red Dog Saloon displays the pistol left behind by Wyatt Earp, and Skagway, with its Gold Rush ghosts and vintage railway. But these are mainly stepping stones to the great outdoors and its amazing wildlife. From watching brown bears foraging to mushing huskies through the snow; from exploring hiking trails to kayaking down crystal-clear rivers; from whale-spotting to marveling at the awesome sight of the Hubbard Glacier – be sure to pack a spirit of adventure.

Surprises and spectacles in one of the world’s wildest corners
Our voyage begins in Aomori, the seaside city on the northern tip of Japan's Honshu island, famous for its delicious apples and fresh seafood – try a selection of the latter with some rice, nokke-don, at the city’s Furukawa Fish Market. Next, we visit Kushiro, on the east coast of Hokkaido, close to wetlands beloved by birds, including the red-crown crane, a national symbol of happiness and long life. Now we have some serious relaxing to do onboard ship as we sail across the ocean – and the International Date Line – on a voyage bound for Alaska. Our first stop is Kodiak Island, a wilderness patrolled by bears, wolves, and moose, then the fishing port of Homer. Finally we reach Seward, to hike to the fjords and dine on fresh halibut.

You’ll never forget this extraordinary close-up of the 49th state
Our journey begins in Seward, on glittering Resurrection Bay, from where we cruise past the Hubbard Glacier, the longest tidewater glacier in North America. Now we head for Alaska’s original capital, Sitka, where the onion-shaped dome of Saint Michael’s serves as a visual reminder of the days when this was Russian territory. Icy Strait Point is next, a former salmon cannery dedicated to the thrills and spills of outdoor activities. Onwards to Wrangell, to see the 8,000-year-old rock carvings at this home of the Tlingit people, then Ketchikan, where many of the buildings balance on stilts over the water. Now we enter Canadian waters at Triple Island and Pine Island, passing through the Seymour Narrows before arriving in the city of Vancouver.

Our first stop is Ketchikan, where the houses are built on stilts over the water and there’s a fine collection of 19thcentury totem poles to see. Next, Sitka, where the onionshaped dome on Saint Michael’s is a reminder of when this was Russian territory. Now you’ll witness the unforgettable sight of the Hubbard Glacier calving great chunks of ice into the sea, and then there are thrills in store at Icy Strait Point. See 8,000-year-old rock paintings at Wrangell, home of the Tlingit people, and Klawock is your gateway to big nature at the Misty Fjords National Park. At Prince Rupert, the adventurous can spot wildlife including grizzly bears and orcas, then it’s on through the Seymour Narrows to Victoria, before we reach our final destination, Vancouver.

Take the northbound route from Vancouver on the west coast of Canada to Seward in the U.S. state of Alaska and you will be rewarded with the chance to pass through the Icy Strait, a top spot for whale watching. The highlights of this voyage are plentiful. You will sail through the world-famous Seymour Narrows, spend time exploring Alaska’s cultural capital, Juneau, and call by the historic towns of Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Sitka, set amid the natural splendor of mountains and glaciers. Also, straight off the bucket list, there will be the opportunity to witness the spectacle of the Hubbard Glacier up close as we cruise slowly past this natural phenomenon on our way to our final destination, Seward.

From palm-fringed islands to snow-capped peaks
This cruise from Vancouver loops around the many islands that lie off the west coast of Canada and Alaska, returning via the buzzy, creative city of Victoria. Travel through the glacial wilderness of the Inside Passage, dotted with pine-fringed islands and snowcapped peaks, to the fishing hub of Ketchikan. From here, we head north to Tracy Arm fjord, the Sawyer Glacier, then on to mountain-ringed Haines for outdoor pursuits. Icy Strait Point brings whale-watching opportunities before we arrive in Sitka, a charming old settlement set in stunning surroundings that was Alaska’s original capital city. We turn our sights south, spending a relaxing day at sea as we head to Victoria and, finally, Vancouver once more.
