Crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2007, released late Wednesday by the New Orleans Police Department, show a 25 percent increase in violent crime over last year in raw numbers, but no increase on a per-capita basis, compared with the same period last year. The NOPD quietly released its fourth quarter 2007 crime statistics late Wednesday and did not respond to requests for comment. The city’s shifting residency numbers make typical comparisons of crime rates difficult. The department’s per-capita analysis uses population figures from the Greater New Orleans Data Center, which has typically estimated the population higher than other researchers. For the fourth quarter of 2007, the NOPD uses a population number of 318,177. Another estimate from December, by GCR and Associates, put the population at slightly less than 300,000. The department’s figures compared only the fourth quarter statistics from 2006 and 2007, not the full-year figures. The raw numbers show a 25 percent jump in reported violent crime in the last three months of 2007 when compared with the previous year. Nonviolent crime increased about 8 percent, and total crime rose nearly 11 percent. The largest spikes were reported in armed robberies (25 percent), rapes (30 percent) and assaults (33 percent.)
