ROSE BOWL RECAP

December 28, 2018 Kiwanis Rose Bowl Float Decoration

The cold air hit us like a slap in the face the minute we got off the bus - it was freezing! With a reputation for being one of the coldest events of the year, the rose bowl had Crystal members sincerely reenacting a classic chant: BRRR.... After some time waiting, we were assigned to work on different parts of the float - cutting flowers, pasting beans, sweeping, and so on. Inside were many large floats, intricately designed with cut flower petals, corn husks, beans, greens, and entire flowers. Much like a mosaic, a majestic eagle's wings were made with corn husks and marigolds. It was amazing to see how the tedious cutting and gluing came together to make these grand masterpieces. Crystal bears bonded during this large-scale event, reaching out to other volunteers from Key Club and other KIWIN'S clubs as well. As our bus finally left Irwindale, I made sure to pack the annual souvenirs: the pin for my rose bowl collection and large globs of oasis glue on my shirt, jacket sleeves, and shoes. Overall, Rose Bowl float decorating was a fun and memorable experience!

- Jiho Kim (Fairfax KIWIN’S President)
