CALL TO DCON: Larry Lam Message from Larry Lam, District Convention Chair: Call to District Convention Hello Polar Bears!!! With a little less than 40 days until DCON 2018, it’s time to start revving up those creative minds to prepare for new costumes, cheers and spirit! DCON this year will be jam-packed with new mysteries and activities that await you at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills!! I highly encourage each of you to start registering your members and getting ready for the most anticipated event of the year! Past convention attendees will know what I mean when I tell you that DCON is the place where unforgettable memories are made. You’ll be able to participate in workshops, spirit battles, ice breakers, the talent show, awards, and so much more, I promise you won’t want to miss it! From April 6th-8th, we will be celebrating all of our accomplishments from the entire term and enjoy the ending of the 2017-2018 term! This is an amazing opportunity to learn new leadership skills, experience the passion of CNH KIWIN’S in person, and make so many new friends, no matter if you are a freshman or a senior! With that being said, the time to register for DCON is now and the early registration deadline is approaching! If you have any questions about how to register or anything else regarding DCON, please feel free to call, message, email, or any other way to contact me!! I can’t wait to see you polar bears this year at DCON 2018!!

Service Spotlight Fairfax HS: MLK Day of Service Fairfax High School KIWIN'S dedicated their Saturday to serve and help out their community. MLK Day of service honors the spoken words of Martin Luther King Jr. Members arrived at West Hollywood Elementary in West Hollywood, CA and checked in for the service event. Fairfax members had the opportunity to beautify the campus. They worked on cutting rotten plants, planting new ones, and cleaning up the campus. Members enjoyed a great lunch and got back to work right away. Fairfax members, overall, enjoyed their time at the service event, sharing laughs and conversations.

Service Spotlight Palisades HS: DIY Dog Toys in the Park On January 28, Pali KIWIN’S members came out to Westwood Park to make DIY Dog Toys for dogs living in Los Angeles shelters. Each member brought unused clothing that could be used to make each toy. After the Pali KIWIN’S president demonstrated how to make the toys, the members got to work making as many toys as possible. By the end of the event, a total of 15 dog toys had been made and were ready to be sent to shelters. The members had a fun time and are excited to do it again!

Key to College Last Saturday, the Foothill CKI Division invited Crystal Division to attend their Key to College hosted at Cal State LA. A great group of polar bears were able to meet many kind and funny Circle K members and Key Club members. During this event, Crystal members were educated on the stigma of community colleges, UCs, and CSUs. Their workshops also included information on dorming, how to make the most of your opportunities in college, and finding your role in Circle K. It was great to see Crystal Division connect with a part of the Kiwanis Family and it has been a pleasure to attend Circle Ks event. It was a wonderful event.

KIWIN’S Training Conference/January DCM After the Foothill Key to College, Crystal was fortunate enough to be able to use a room at CSULA to host a KIWIN’S Training Conference and DCM. At this Conference, some special guests include LA Kiwanis Advisor Robert Santo, District Administrator and Goldstone Advisor Mahmood Bashir, and CKI members Diana Mora (Foothill Lt.G) and Jesus Martinez. At this conference, new and old members attended to learn about the KIWIN’S history, structure, district projects, and much more. Some other workshops included Technology Safety (how to internet safe and represent KIWIN’S well), and in-person vs. online communication. In addition, Thirst Project representative and speaker Kellen Brewer held a presentation on the global water crisis and how members can make an impact in this project. After KTC, a small DCM was held where Jiho KIm (Officer) and Cedric Mao (Member) were recognized as our Blanks of the Month. Ultimately, it was a very productive and fun day and we are very thankful to everyone that made this event possible. Shoutout to Diana Mora for reaching out to us and allowing a room for us to host our event.
