ROY HODGSON
And before continuing, I must first express my sympathies with the staff and fans of Bury FC. Football clubs are fundamental in the lives of many, so to see a fellow team endure such a fate is truly saddening. Turning my attention to today’s match, I am sure that our opponents this afternoon will provide a stern test. Aston Villa are a historic and proud club and I was pleased that their efforts in the Championship last season were rewarded by promotion, an accomplishment I felt was well earned. Our last league match provided us with three extremely valuable points and I must praise the players for their efforts in last Saturday’s victory. We were all aware before the game that travelling to Old Trafford poses a sizeable challenge to any side and to fashion a win there is a remarkable achievement. However, everybody at the club works throughout the week in
preparation for every match and so victories seldom surprise me, my staff or any member of the team. Every point is hard fought in this league and we do our level best to earn them upon every opportunity. I was particularly pleased for Jordan Ayew and Gary Cahill, two members of the squad whose services we secured during the summer. Jordan works tirelessly every week to earn his place in the team and his goal was a just reward for his continuous endeavour. This week has also seen Victor Camarasa and James McCarthy earn their first starts for the club and I am pleased with how they are settling in. Credit must also go to Sam Woods, who was awarded a first professional start for Crystal Palace. Sam is a determined young man who is developing well by spending his time with the first-team and he has equipped himself well when required.
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
He must keep working hard, but I feel he has a bright future ahead of him. Of course, Tuesday’s result was a disappointing one and it was one neither I nor the squad are hiding from. Knowing how strong we can be, we are aware when we do not perform to our full capacity. However, I must applaud Colchester United and wish them well in the next round. Results do not always go the way you wish them to and so we must learn from Tuesday’s game. As I have said before, the Premier League will always be our focus and the primary goal each season is to consolidate our status in the top-flight. Each game in this league is a chance to earn points and go one step closer to achieving that goal and today is no different. I believe that we can deliver the performance that your continuous loyal support deserves. Enjoy the game!
05
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Dean Smith, his staff, the directors and fans of Aston Villa and to each and every Crystal Palace fan today.

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC
In my Colchester United notes to you, I wanted to focus on the cup competition and leave today’s message for the Premier League after our games with Sheffield and Manchester United. Unfortunately, the Carabao Cup is over already, and it is a shame we will not have a run in this competition. We are disappointed but respect the performance of Colchester United: an organised and hard-working team and I wish them luck in this competition. Before speaking about Manchester United, I must discuss the Sheffield United game. It’s important to focus on the lows as much as the highs, otherwise we would not learn and improve. I have never known the dressing room like that post-match; we were so disappointed with our performance and the result. We let down our travelling fans and we
said then that we’d look to make amends as quickly as possible. And we did. That 90 minutes away at Old Trafford was one of my best as a player of this club. The belief in training all week was that we would do what many did not expect, by returning to Selhurst with a positive result. But to leave with three points, in the dramatic style that we did, was one of the greatest performances in my time here. It was a wonderful team effort, with the manager making changes to suit our game plan, and those that came in performed well. Gary’s debut was nothing more than I expected of a player with his career; his leadership and experience were key in achieving what we did. Jordan took his goal well and he showed a great calmness. The role of Jeff in that goal, winning the ball like he does, was underrated and highlighted the importance of
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
having someone with Jeff’s versatility: second striker in pre-season to hardworking midfielder at Old Trafford. To fight until the end like we did, with the winning move starting thanks to Christian winning the ball on the halfway line, was another example of the all-round play he brings to the team. And then to have our left-back scoring the winning strike in injury time from a counter-attack proves that we were more attack-minded than perhaps we were given credit for. Colchester has now happened, and we must forget about the enjoyment of last Saturday. We must focus on Aston Villa, a side I have been impressed with since their return. I like their technical midfield players Jack Grealish and John McGinn; they will be in my area today so I know my role will be one that requires me, and my teammates, to be fully focussed. Make some noise!
07
It’s always great to be at Selhurst twice in a week. To be amongst our fans in the stands on Tuesday was enjoyable, even though the result wasn’t what we wanted.

STEVE PARISH
Shall we start with last week’s visit to Manchester United? What a magnificent result after 30 years there without a win – an incredible effort from the team and all the coaching staff. Huge congratulations to Jordan and Patrick for their fine finishes, and to Gary for contributing so much on his Palace debut, but it really was a brilliant effort from all of the team. Not to mention the fantastic away support – I’m sure it will live long in the memory for those lucky enough to be at Old Trafford. Travelling back from Manchester, I read some amazing facts on Twitter. That we’re the most recent team to secure league wins at Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and United. That since February, we have secured the third most points (30) in the 17 games in that period – behind just Manchester City and Liverpool.
That we’re the first club to net a 90th minute winner at Old Trafford in the Premier League era is astonishing, and really is a feather in our cap. These stats really do show what potential this group of players and coaching staff have. Congratulations to Roy who clocked up his 26th Premier League victory for the club, making him our most successful Premier League manager, with many more wins to come I’m sure. But the United result makes Tuesday night’s loss to Colchester United even more disappointing, I suppose. We know that we can achieve so much, yet lose games that – on paper – we really should win. That said, I’m pleased for Sam Woods who made his full debut, as well as several other members of the squad who were able to get some match action under their belts. And congratulations must go to
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
Colchester United, who we wish all the best in the Third Round. It was great to see so many of you meet members of the Palace squad at the PUMA store on Carnaby Street last week – especially so many young fans. I’m really pleased that we put these sort of events on, as I know just how memorable the experiences can be for young fans especially. A word on today’s visitors – they deserve huge credit for their campaign in the Championship, and are fully deserving of their place back in the Premier League. They were very impressive in their last league outing with Everton securing a 2-0 win, so I am sure will provide stiff opposition for us today. As always, please get behind the team as loudly as possible, as we seek to build on that amazing win at United. Up the Palace!

Gary Cahill may only just be beginning his time at Palace but the impact of his professionalism is already clear. Here, he speaks with Dan Blazer about fellow defenders, his influences breaking through at Aston Villa and Roy Hodgson as England manager.

McArthur heads off and focus turns to Cahill’s first few weeks in south London. Stifling the final few laughs from Macca’s input, Cahill continues: “I’ve settled in really well; the lads have been great to me: very welcoming and an easy bunch to get on with. I could see that there was a good spirit here from the moment I arrived.” Cahill arrives with a wealth – and envious amount – of experience, but the 33-year-old is joining a Palace defensive unit that in Joel Ward, Patrick van Aanholt, James Tomkins,
“These are players who have played many, many games in the Premier League, so I come in with the desire to adapt and to learn about how these guys and this team want to defend and how I can play my part in that.” For all the changes that Cahill has gone through, swapping west for south London, new teammates and a new work environment, one man has provided a recognisable presence: Roy Hodgson. The Eagles manager awarded Cahill the Three Lions armband during

Mamadou Sakho, Scott Dann and Martin Kelly currently has 725 combined appearances for the Eagles. Letting go of years of fine-tuned habits at Chelsea must be hard for Cahill, years of lining up alongside players such Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz, but this ‘reset’ is something he is relishing: “When you come into any defensive unit, you begin training with another to work out and learn about everyone’s strengths and weaknesses. For me, that’s how a good partnership and back four can work.

his time with England, so there’s an understanding of how one another work and a respect that remains from those international years. Speaking about Hodgson, Cahill smiled and said: “What you see with the manager is what you get. He has his ways of working and he expects training and games to be done with high levels of concentration and tempo which is very similar to what he was like as England manager. I know his principles and I’m looking to do the things that he wants.”
13
Gary Cahill’s professionalism has been obvious to all those who have known him during his career. And nothing has changed since his arrival in south London. Sitting on the canteen balcony at Copers Cope, Cahill begins the interview with a statement that highlights his professionalism; a player excited by a new challenge at 33-years-old: “Any club is different,” he says. “It’s a matter of you adapting to those changes from styles of play to new teammates, and you wanting to get your teeth stuck-in to that new challenge.” The way Cahill conducts himself makes it clear as to why Crystal Palace moved to have a serial winner of the Premier and Champions League, and former England captain, on their books. It makes it even funnier when through a window just over Cahill’s right shoulder pops through James McArthur, and in his unmissable, thick Scottish accent Macca jokingly mocks our summer recruit. Cover blown; seasoned pros, going through their umpteenth interview, can’t help but let their guard down when Macca is about. Furthermore, this is confirmation, like it was even needed, that Cahill has settled in fast with the Palace way of life, and his teammates have welcomed him as a defender and a personality to the dressing room.

Cahill joined the Villa setup as a 13-year-old, before eventually leaving for Bolton Wanderers after an eightyear spell at Villa Park, and it’s a time he looks back on with fondness: “The majority of my memories are from the youth team, because I was only in the first-team for a small

number of games. However, it was an important time for me in terms of growing as a player. “I came straight from school, moved into the club’s digs and then went through the youth team stages, to the reserves and then to training with the first-team. “After a loan to Burnley for six months, I came back and managed to make my Villa debut, which was a real standout moment for me.” Cahill came through at Villa with an age group that would go on
15
Having made his impressive debut against Manchester United at the weekend, it’s clear that Cahill is well regarded by Hodgson. After all, no matter how many times the former Chelsea defender has played at Old Trafford, going there for the first time with your new teammates wouldn’t have been easy. Being trusted in those scenarios highlights why Cahill was selected to be the first man out of the tunnel under Hodgson for England and why he was chosen as the successor to John Terry at Stamford Bridge. Therefore, when a former captain of Cahill’s calibre discusses Luka Milivojevic with nothing but respect and admiration, you listen: “My first impression of Luka was very positive; he’s clearly a big character within the dressing room and I can see why he’s got the armband. He’s got lots of traits I’d look to see in a captain: very authoritative and, first and foremost, an excellent central midfield player.” Having now made his first Premier League appearance for the Eagles, Cahill will be hoping today sees him on the teamsheet for his first runout at Selhurst Park, in front of the loyal and vocal south London support. Today’s opposition Aston Villa are a team that the one-time Villans defender knows well, with the club providing the central defender his breakthrough and footballing education.

Agbonlahor: “When we were playing at youth level, Gabby would be scoring two goals a game; we’d just knock the ball over the top and he was in one-vone; he was just so quick.” Always looking to progress, Cahill would analyse the senior pros ahead of him. They were already living his dream, and he wanted to replicate them: “Martin Laursen was there when I was there. And when I was a younger player at Villa I remember Gareth Southgate being there with Ugo Ehiogu.
“WHEN WE WERE PLAYING AT YOUTH LEVEL, GABBY WOULD BE SCORING TWO GOALS A GAME; WE’D JUST KNOCK THE BALL OVER THE TOP AND HE WAS IN ONE-V-ONE; HE WAS JUST SO QUICK”
or three age groups that saw a large number of players come through. “That’s a credit to them and their setup; I had a great education because of it, training with the likes of Gareth Barry, who was in the same digs that I was in, Liam Ridgewell, Jamie Ward, Steven Davis, Gabby Agbonlahor, Craig Gardner and I’m probably missing some out. Just naming those guys, though, is a large number alone.” A smile comes across Gary’s face as he remembers, thankfully, playing at the opposite end of the pitch to teammate, Gabriel

“The youth team would be encouraged to go and watch the first team play on a Saturday, so I’d go along with my dad and that was very important for my development.” If the likes of Martin Laursen were now youngsters coming through the ranks at Crystal Palace, there’s no doubt they’d be looking towards the way Gary Cahill plays and conducts himself as a professional. Arguably, the Palace centre-half has now gone further than those he idolised and looked to replicate growing up

to have varying levels of success at the top level – not all academy graduates can end up being Premier and Champions League winners. Our summer signing recognises how important working with such a talented crop of youngsters had on his development, driving one another on: “Villa had a fantastic academy. When you look at the actual number of lads that make it through the academy setups [into the Premier League], it’s so, so low. However, at Villa during that time they had two

Fresh from the smash hit success of what critics are calling the worst transfer announcement video of all time, here I am again. It’s actually that video - and the perils of taking a risk on social media that I’m going to talk about first. FRIENDS REUNITED In case you missed it, to celebrate the reunion of James McCarthy and James McArthur, we decided to use the old Friends Reunited website as a gimmick and add existing green screen footage of the players over the top to make it look like they’d found each other on there. It looked rubbish. It sounded rubbish. It was rubbish. That was the plan. It was supposed to be a swipe at other clubs’ overelaborate transfer announcement videos, something that except
for a flirtation with a bit of Tasty Jerk smoke a couple of years ago we’ve avoided doing. To be fair to Matt and Billy, two hotshot young marketeers in the Soho office, they did flag that a lot of people would be too young to know what Friends Reunited was and may not get we were being ironic. How right they were. As soon as it was posted, the abuse rained down on us like a hay
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
fever sufferer’s sneeze in June and left us feeling as sticky as Martin Kelly’s wet look hair gel. It’s fair to say the joke didn’t land. Even fairer to say it never took off. As we’d put together the video without running it past the Maccas we immediately decided it wasn’t fair for their faces to be on something that was coming in for so much stick and deleted it. This was followed up with a ‘witty’
tweet referencing the deletion of the tweet, saying VAR check complete: tweet deleted. We hoped that would be the end of it. How wrong we were. It turns out even when you delete things, they’re not immediately deleted and lots of Palace fans (thanks guys!) had screen recorded it. The video was then picked up by loads of big websites and even made it onto Soccer AM. So lesson learned: don’t post gimmicky transfer videos and if you do (even when two young hotshot marketeers advise against it) don’t try to be ironically rubbish. It just looks rubbish. Also, stop using the word ‘rubbish’. You sound like a 12-year-old.
HIGHLIGHTS You may have noticed you’re seeing match highlights online earlier after a game than usual, and that’s because the rules have changed this season. Previously, we could put highlights on the club website from midnight after a game and nothing on social media until 72-hours after full time. This season it’s two-minutes of footage on the website two hours after full time, two-minutes on social media at 10pm, unlimited on the website at midnight and up to 10 minutes on social media midnight the day after the game. Lucky you! And lucky editors trying to edit highlights on a train on the way back from an away game surrounded by fully-watered fans looking over their shoulder.

Aston Villa have won just one of their last 13 away games in all comps against Palace W1 D6 L6
FROM THE DUGOUT
“OUR PERFORMANCES HAVE BEEN OK. SPURS WAS TOUGH FIRST UP… EVERTON STARTED BRIGHTER BUT IT WAS A GOOD PERFORMANCE TO GET THE WIN.”
Aston Villa will be looking to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time since May 2015, when they beat Everton (3-2) and West Ham United (1-0) under Tim Sherwood. Keeping on the consecutive ‘theme’, if the Villans keep a clean sheet today, it will mean they’ve not conceded in back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since January 2015. It won’t be easy for Dean Smith’s side, though, with Crystal Palace having won 10 Premier League matches in 2019; only Manchester City (19), Liverpool (16) and Arsenal (12) have registered more victories since the turn of the year. Furthermore, Villa have failed to win any of their last 19 Premier League away games (W0 D3 L16), including having lost their last six in London, scoring just three goals and conceding 16.
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
If Roy Hodgson guides his Eagles to victory, he will become only the second manager to beat a particular club in the Premier League as manager of five different sides, after Sam Allardyce against Newcastle United (Big Sam defeated the Magpies whilst in charge of Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Sunderland and West Ham). And the stats look good for the Palace manager, with Hodgson having won more Premier League games against Villa than he has against any other side (P11 W7 D2 L2). Having made his Eagles debut last weekend against Manchester United, Gary Cahill could well be in line for his first goal for the south Londoners with the former England captain having previously scored a brace for Bolton against Villa back in March, 2011.

AMATEUR ANALYSIS PALACE V ASTON VILLA
ORCHESTRATOR: JOHN MCGINN 40
John McGinn’s start to life in the Premier League has seen the midfielder become a decent cheap option as a ‘differential’ for those of you that play Fantasy Football. The Scotland international has a goal and an assist to his name in the top-flight after playing every minute so far for the Villains. If Palace are to stop the 24-year-old then the key will be for the likes of James McArthur and Luka Milivojevic to close him down early, with McGinn having the most shots per game for Villa to date (2.7), with six of those coming from outside the area. If the Eagles can hustle the centre-midfielder quickly, then there’s
a good chance of a possession turnover – and in turn, a counterattack – with McGinn having been dispossessed four more times than any of his teammates this season.
Key: Big Chances A 'big chance' is defined as an opportunity where the player would reasonably be expected to score and manages to get a shot away.

KEEP THEM ON THE WINGS Wesley has played all but 16 minutes of the Villans’ league campaign so far, and in that time the striker has lost 16 of his 22 aerial duels. Therefore, if Palace’s midfielders can push Villa down the wings, the Eagles’ centre-backs should be able to handle Wesley with relative ease – combined, Palace’s central defenders have won 19 aerial duels in the league.

Villa's attack zones in the league so far
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has utilised 4-1-4-1 twice this season (in the defeat to Spurs and the win over Everton), with Smith opting for 4-3-3 in the home defeat to Bournemouth. The problem the former Brentford gaffer has is that he clearly favours a side that includes John McGinn, Jack Grealish and Douglas Luiz, with the latter coming in for Conor Hourihane after the opening day defeat to the Lilywhites. Against Bournemouth, Smith went for all three in the middle of the park, however, this left the back four behind the three attack-minded central midfielders
exposed. Therefore, for the Everton win, Smith returned to 4-1-4-1 with Luiz used behind the midfield quartet and this worked. Luiz made the most tackles for the Villans against the Toffees. However, with a pass success rate of just 66% (the third worst of the 10 outfield players that started for
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
Villa) there’s a suggestion that if Palace can harry the Brazilian U23 international in between the bank of four at the back and midfield, then a swift turnover of possession could lead to an attack numbered in the Eagles’ favour, similar to the scenario that led to Patrick van Aanholt scoring last weekend.

The number of seasons in their history that the Villains have spent outside the top two tiers. Villa were relegated to the third tier for the first time ever in the 1969/70 season, just after Doug Ellis had taken over as chairman of a club in a mess on and off the field. The appointment of manager Ron Saunders paid huge dividends as they were promoted two years later, won the League Cup, and then rejoined the elite in 1975.

128 The record number of goals scored in a single top division season is held by Villa. The total in the 1920/21 campaign bettered Arsenal by one goal, but it still wasn’t enough to stop the Gunners winning the title by seven points, despite Villa's Pongo Waring leading the scoring charts with 49 goals.

HISTORY Crystal Palace are about to be the first opponent to play at Spurs’ new stadium twice. Palace first visited Tottenham well over a century ago, in 1906, when both clubs played in the Southern League. We won our first game at White Hart Lane on October 5th 1907. In recent times we’ve only beaten them once away in the Premier League – a 1-0 win thanks to a Neil Shipperley goal in 1997. MEMORABLE MATCHES I will always remember our FA Cup Fifth Round match away at Spurs in February 2016 when Palace won the game via an unlikely source. Martin Kelly was playing rightback that day, as Joel Ward was at left-back and Damo and Scott were in the middle.
Kells stormed up the right wing with a Pembo-like run and scored his only goal for Palace. Without it we would never have gone on to reach the final. I don’t like to mention Jason Puncheon’s penalty in January 2014, because Punch is a top bloke. But, apparently, they found the ball when they demolished the roof of the old stadium. Sorry, Punch. TRAVEL This is the first of four consecutive Premier League away games in London. No long journeys now until the end of November. It always annoys me when people say that Selhurst Park is the most difficult London ground to get to. That’s rubbish! It’s 11-minutes from London Bridge and then a 10-minute walk.
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
Spurs has always been more of a challenge. The most common route is by the Victoria Line to Seven Sisters and then a very long walk [over a mile and a half] which takes a good half an hour. Tottenham Hale tube is slightly closer. White Hart Lane Overground station is close to the stadium but I’ve always found massive queues when trying to get on a train going there from Seven Sisters. Parking is difficult anywhere near the ground as there are controlled parking zones and road closures. Basically, don’t try it. PUBS AND BEER North East London has seen an explosion of new micro-breweries in recent years. My own favourite brewery in Tottenham is Redemption which is a 15-minute walk from the
31.08.2019
ground. Their Pale Ale is very well balanced and citric. They also brew an aptly named best bitter called ‘Hopspur’. Their taproom is open before every Spurs game with pop-up street food vendors. The closest traditional pub to the ground with good beer is The Antwerp Arms. Alternatively, this is one of the few football grounds in Britain where you can buy a decent craft beer. In fact, Beavertown have set up a micro-brewery within the stadium and their beers are on sale in all the bars. Beavertown was setup by Logan Plant – son of Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant – in 2011 and has recently seen investment from Heineken with big plans for expansion. Their beers include Gamma Ray and Neck Oil and
FAMOUS FANS The Dave Clark Five (very close to the hearts of all Palace fans) were from Tottenham. Current fans include comedians Paul Whitehouse and Michael McIntyre but my favourite Spurs fan was the late great Peter Cook: the owner of Private Eye magazine and half of the hilarious Pete and Dud double act. Cook and Moore also created the brilliantly outrageous “Derek and Clive” (don’t listen to them with your kids or your granny). Peter Cook was a true comedy genius. In his later years he used to call in to Clive Bull’s chat show on LBC pretending to be a Norwegian fisherman called Sven from Swiss Cottage.

“I don’t know why I keep coming back. WhenI wake up the next day, I always say ‘I’m not doing it again’ but somehow, here I am!” At 38, and despite his slightly creaky knees, Andrew Johnson is gearing up to take on his third marathon-length charity walk in support of vulnerable youngsters in south London. Taking place in October during the international break, the Palace for Life Marathon March, powered by Utilita, attracts more than 150 Palace fans and legends, raising thousands of pounds to help young people build for a more positive future. Johnson continued: “It’s a great day out for an important cause that I really believe in and want to be part of. I’ve met some of the most amazing people along the way and built some really good friendships;
people I still keep in touch with.” The Foundation supports more than 14,000 young people in the communities around Selhurst Park every year, with a focus this season on helping to build positive mental health in schoolchildren and mentoring those who are at risk of being caught up in crime. “I’ve got three young kids myself and it terrifies me every
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
time they go out. It’s about time we all started taking action and the Foundation is doing exactly that. I’m so proud of that and it’s why I get involved. “They’re creating amazing opportunities for young people in and around south London, the work in mental health is just so important, offering that support is life-changing.”

The chance to have a chat along the way and share stories is one of Johnson’s favourite things about the Marathon March, and what he attributes to helping pass the miles on a varied route that takes in Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park and the King’s Road, before ending in Trafalgar Square. “Every year you meet loads of different people, new fans, fans from the past and plenty of familiar faces. We don’t just talk about football of old, we talk about football of new, their lives, my current life, whatever is on our minds.” And those familiar faces are never more welcome than a former team mate who still has your back. Last year, Johnson was joined by Neil Shipperley, Andy Gray, Mark Bright and Sasa Curcic, as well as Chairman Steve Parish. “Right at the end, I was really struggling with my knee and I started thinking that I might have to stop. “Then I saw Shipps waiting for me with a smile on his face. He said ‘come on son, you follow me, I’ve got you now.’ So when I was at my lowest point, there was a certain Mr Shipperley there to help get me through! We definitely had a few pints to celebrate.” That kind of support and an ongoing connection with former players, the Chairman and the fans are why Johnson remains, in his own words: “Palace through and through.”
Follow AJ on Instagram ajnumber8 “There aren’t many chairmen who would turn up and walk a marathon alongside the fans. It just goes to show where his heart is; he does things for the right reasons and that’s because he loves the club inside out. “This club gave me the platform to do what I did as a player, it’s where I made my name and I want to give back to everyone. Top to bottom, I want to stay involved, and that’s
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
why I turn up and support these things, because I believe in it.” Join Andrew Johnson at the Palace for Life Marathon March, powered by Utilita, on Saturday 12th October and walk 26.2 miles (shorter routes are also available) from Selhurst Park to Trafalgar Square. It was not until early September that Crystal Palace, still striving for that first victory on their top-flight return, confronted opposition from south of the river. Wimbledon made the short journey to Selhurst Park aiming to kick-start their own winless campaign, though this was not their first local spat of term. Derbies would become a feature of a unique season. For the first and only time to date, the 20-team First Division in 1989/90 boasted all four footballing forces from south of the Thames. The Dons, under the stewardship of Harry Bassett and then Bobby Gould, had sprinted up the Football League ladder over eight startling campaigns but were arguably the most established, with their tiny Plough Lane home having hosted elite occasions since 1986. John Docherty’s Millwall had joined them for the first time in their 103-year history in 1988, their rise spearheaded by the goals of Teddy Sheringham and Tony Cascarino. They would briefly top the table at the start of their two campaigns at the highest level. Charlton Athletic’s rise had coincided with that of Millwall, despite the fact they were homeless
and ground-sharing with Palace. By the time the Dons travelled to Selhurst Park, there had already been two south London derbies: Millwall having drawn 2-2 at Plough Lane, and then at home to Charlton by the same scoreline. “It was a golden era for south London clubs,” said the then-Athletic manager, Lenny Lawrence, in an article in The Blizzard back in 2015. “I think it was down to the management. When you are a club of the size of Charlton or Millwall, everything has got to come right, on and off the pitch. Palace were more of a top-flight club than any of us, and even then Steve Coppell had to get them up through the play-offs. But it came right for us too, and even though we were playing at Selhurst and it was difficult, we spent more years in the top-flight in the late 1980s than Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough put together.” Palace would ultimately top the four-team league, beating all-comers in their six fixtures against local rivals – representing almost half the First Division contests in which they prevailed that year – over the course of the campaign. Not that they were easy occasions to negotiate. “The derbies
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
were intense,” said Alan Pardew, a regular in the Palace midfield. “You knew so many of the other players then and, because you were probably local, your friends and family would emphasise how important the games were. My cousin was a massive Millwall fan, and he couldn’t wait for derbies so that he could laugh at me. We’re supposed to be professional but these things have an impact.” That four-team experience would be short-lived. Millwall, despite that bright start, would fail to win any of their last 20 league games and finish bottom. Charlton would win only three league matches before mid-February and lose all of their last six games, meaning 19th place felt like a relatively decent achievement for a club with other issues to address. Wimbledon’s quality would eventually secure eighth position, though Palace would twice squeeze past them. Geoff Thomas’ first half goal, and a fine run and finish by Ian Wright after Eric Young’s error late on would secure the Eagles’ 2-0 win in September. Four points from four games represented a relatively solid start. Next up was an evening game at Anfield.

On the 6th of July 2019, Crystal Palace made a commitment to support the Pride celebrations in the annual Pride March. The Eagles partnered up with ‘Proud and Palace’, our LGBTQ+ supporters’ group with support from a group of Crystal Palace full-time staff and our mascot Pete. It was a fantastic day, with fellow London clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Watford and Tottenham Hotspur present, demonstrating a united front from the ‘football family.’ A total of 30,000 people attended the march, with another 1.5million people drawn to the centre of the capital to support the Pride March. It was a wonderful event carried out in a great atmosphere, with Crystal Palace delighted to be able to promote equality and celebrate diversity throughout our club. The marchers wore specially designed t-shirts and, carrying Proud
and Palace flags, the group marched from Regents Park to Trafalgar Square alongside other LGBTQ+ football fans. Emma Wright, who is Co-Chair of Proud and Palace, added the following comments about the successful events. She said: “This year Proud and Palace had our biggest ever presence at Pride in London and Croydon Pride.” Proud and Palace member Kate said: “I was loving every second of it, being able to finally be myself, without the worry of homophobic abuse supported by what felt like 30 new friends. We couldn’t help having a bit of banter with Chelsea marching in front of us, in true Palace style the chants of ‘can you hear the Chelsea sing?’ soon started.” Wright continued: “The next weekend was Croydon Pride and we were out again, with both events timely reminders of the club’s support and identity as a club for
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
everyone.” Member Anne-Britt spoke of her motivation for getting involved: “As someone from a minority background, supporting my beloved CPFC, as a member of the active fan base, hasn’t always been as easy as it should be. I love my club and I want to be proud of every part of it and that includes it being a club that everyone and anyone can support as an equal.’ Wright added: “Now the season is back underway we want to carry that energy and support into matchdays to make sure everyone feels welcome at Selhurst. You can’t always know whether the person sat next to you is LGBTQ+ but when fans hear fellow fans using derogatory language it does nothing but create division at a time when eve-ryone needs to pull together.” Follow @ProudandPalace on Twitter if you have any questions.

This week, it was Kian Flanagan’s turn to grab a cuppa with us. Last season’s U23 Player of the Season spoke passionately about cars, the influence of Andros, Luka and Macca and what changed in pre-season last year.

David Boateng, Sean Robertson and Malachi Boateng are just a few of the lads chatting away in the Academy Training Ground’s canteen; there’s a lot of noise, laughter and a good energy coming from that area of the room. In the middle of their huddle is Kian Flanagan: U23 Player of the Season and the midfielder who is back with his peers in Beckenham after a pre-season in Switzerland with the first team. He is a player whose teammates are no doubt delighted to see back – being a key man for Richard Shaw’s side - and he now has the added experience of training day in, day out with Roy Hodgson’s management staff and squad. Reflecting upon his time competing in the Uhrencup against FC Luzern & BSC Young Boys, Kian said: “It was a very good experience for me, just being around the first team players and taking in bits of information they give you and watching what they do day-to-day, what they eat. “It’s a big difference in terms of the professionalism, things like how they train and the intensity with which they train were the big things I took from my time.” Walking into that packed Academy ground canteen surrounded by unfamiliar faces, this Club Journalist had an instant appreciation of what it must have been like for Kian and his fellow U23 players who went on tour. Perhaps,
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
31.08.2019
somewhat sheepishly, heading over to work with the first teamers. But Kian and the Academy lads are as friendly as they come. It’s a trait which clearly runs throughout this club’s very foundations, as the 20-yearold reveals how helpful the senior pros were upon his arrival: “Andros [Townsend] helps you a lot, gives you bits of advice throughout training. “Luka [Milivojevic] as well, he’s a good captain and it’s great for the club that he’s signed the new deal. “Macca [James McArthur] too, he’s more of a leading by example figure. His work rate, his pressing and you see him running around. It’s inspiring; he does what he does on a matchday and in training.” Receiving Player of the Season, reaching double figures for goals and then taking advice from the likes of the Eagles’ club captain, the anticipation from Flanagan’s coaches and the aims of the player himself couldn’t be higher: “[I’m aiming to] hopefully impress the gaffer [Hodgson], by playing here a bit more or maybe going out on loan, because I’ve done three U23 pre-seasons now, so it’s time to push on and get out there.”
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
You wouldn’t bet against Flanagan making further great strides this season. After all, the Republic of Ireland U19 international credits his statement season as a result of nothing but the right mentality and hard work. “When I ended the season [two campaigns ago] with just two goals, I wasn’t happy about it. So, at the start of pre-season last year I just spent it focussing on hitting the back of the net, loads of drills outside: touch, finish, touch, finish. “And when I’m actually in a game it’s just belief really; belief that I’m going to score.” Kian closes his interview on a tangent, explaining a passion he’s had since he began kicking a ball: cars. “I still have a look at what all the boys over there [in the first-team] are driving,” he says. “The car park over there is a joke! I still love cars and that’s the route I would’ve gone down [if football wasn’t an option].” It’s a refreshingly human end to this Cuppa in the Canteen. Despite all the hard work, sacrifices made and relentless focus on football, it’s great to see that the child in all of us remains fully in tact in one of Republic of Ireland’s biggest up-and-coming stars.

THE OFFSIDE TRUST Crystal Palace are pleased to be welcoming members and ambassadors from The Offside Trust for today’s game against Aston Villa. In November 2016, British football was rocked by a series of high-profile revelations regarding child sexual abuse. Several former professional players bravely waived their right to anonymity to speak out about their experiences. A number of the players involved decided to set up The Offside Trust, an organisation committed to supporting survivors
and working to make sport safer for children. The Trust is led by exfootballer Steve Walters and former professional golfer Chris Unsworth, whose stories have inspired hundreds of people to speak out for the first time about their abuse. The Trust are proud to work with and support fellow survivors. Its aims are to end abuse in sport, so kids can be kids and support the healing journey of survivors. The Offside Trust works alongside governing bodies, charities and organisations that deal with safeguarding. It is an

PALACEXI IN TIME
FIRST MEETING IN 59 YEARS This was the second occasion that the clubs had met, with the first clash also happening in the FA Cup - the first league encounter would not occur until 1967. In February 1913 Palace were still a Southern League club when, in the then Third (now Fifth) Round, they were drawn away to the Villans following victories over Glossop and Bury. Despite having a successful campaign, Palace found the established Division One outfit too strong and suffered a 5-0 defeat. The crowd of a reported 44,500 was the largest Palace had played in front of and would stay that way for over 20 years.
Eagles in front. Midway through the first half, though, the game saw its fourth goal arrive with McParland again finding the back of the net to bring the sides level. Early in the second half Palace grabbed the lead again as Byrne headed home a cross from Ron Heckman. But the cycle repeated, with Derek Dougan scrambling home another equaliser for the First Division outfit. Just as a lucrative replay seemed on the cards for the Eagles, Palace ‘keeper Vic Rouse was caught in two minds and allowed a cross by Harry Burrows to sail over him into the net with two minutes remaining.
THE 90 MINUTES Just promoted back to the Third Division, victory looked a tall order against a top-flight club in Villa. Therefore, it was no surprise when they took an early lead through Peter McParland. However, Palace struck back right away when Johnny Byrne equalised. Within a minute of that moment the game was turned on its head, with John Cartwright providing the pass for Dennis Uphill to put the
CHANGE FOR NEXT GAME Returning to league action the following Saturday, with a Third Division fixture against Halifax Town at Selhurst Park, manager Arthur Rowe dropped Rouse from the team and gave a debut to the promising Bill Glazier who would in time become the most expensive goalkeeper in the Football League when he was transferred to Coventry City for £35,000 in 1964.

BIT-PART PLAYER TO SUCCESSFUL YOUTH COACH In the Palace team for the seven-goal thriller that afternoon was John Cartwright, a player who would only make a dozen first-team appearances for the club. However, Cartwright returned to Selhurst Park as a youth team coach under Malcolm Allison and then Terry Venables, becoming an important cog in the development of a number of young footballers such as Kenny Sansom, Billy Gilbert, Peter Nicholas, Jerry Murphy, Ian Walsh and Vince Hilaire. A PALACE & VILLA CONNECTION In looking for guidance to form a professional football club the Crystal Palace Company sought the advice of the President of Aston Villa, William McGregor, who had led the formation of the professional Football League in 1888. As a result, Edmund Goodman, who had the benefit of working under Villa’s long-standing secretary George Ramsay, came south in the spring of 1905 to become the secretary of the newly-formed Crystal Palace Football Club and set about finding a chairman, manager and players in time for the forthcoming 1905/06 season.

Going back to pre-season, we got the boys in at the end of June for a testing day, and it was great to see them all return in excellent physical condition. They each had an off-season programme to follow and it was clear they had taken this seriously. Pre-season offers us the opportunity to expose the lads to different challenges. We had games against Category Three teams in Leyton Orient and Exeter City. Furthermore, we organised a training camp over in Ireland, which was fantastic. We took a predominantly U17s group and over there we faced a couple of strong U19 sides which was a lesson for the lads in the physical nature of professional football. We’ve played a couple of games at non-league grounds this season and that has been great for the squad, too. We’ve played at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground and by the time you’re reading this we would have played at Hemel
Hempstead’s ground against Burnley this morning. It’s a chance for the boys to see the facilities at these levels, play on different surfaces and this all adds to their education. The league season has started well for us, and the opening day 4-0 victory over Colchester United was pleasing. I must give a special mention to Rob Street, who scored a hat-trick. It was a proper striker’s hattrick, too; he’s been working on his movement and all the goals were in the six-yard area. If he can continue to add those type of goals to his allround game, he’ll have every chance of progressing. Rob left the ground with a signed ball from all the lads, which we like to do as a memento, because scoring a hat-trick at any level is difficult, so to do so for Crystal Palace is something worth remembering.
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
He has a fantastic attitude towards learning and gives maximum effort every day and it is those qualities that also saw him awarded the captain’s armband against Colchester. In our other two games so far we’ve drawn 0-0 against Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest, so to have three clean sheets from three games is obviously great as it shows me the team are doing their jobs when not in possession. But the defensive side is not our only focus. We give the team instructions on all aspects of the game: from being in possession to transitioning up the pitch. This season we’re altering our approach and looking at implementing a more possession-based build up style of play, whereas we’ve been a predominantly counter-attacking side in recent years. I look forward to seeing the lads’ continued progression throughout the rest of this campaign.

I’m speaking prior to today’s game against Burnley, but so far I’m delighted with the way my Under18s have started the season: unbeaten and yet to concede all whilst learning a new style of play.

LEETA RUTHERFORD
Last campaign I was playing for Lewes in the Championship, and actually played against Crystal Palace in both games – don’t worry I have apologised to the girls for scoring against them! But a few things I remember from that 180 minutes is being impressed by the level of the players representing the Eagles. Considering that Palace weren’t expecting to take part in the Championship last season - it was all very much short notice in terms of being able to prepare for the season, without doing the necessary restructuring that any team would need to do. I also remember coming away from those games and thinking about how passionate Dean Davenport had been on the sidelines, and playing for a manager like that was another big draw for me when hearing of Palace’s interest.
Right from the beginning, Dean was open and honest and told me of the aims to end up in the top half this season, and I was refreshed by his passion and what he wanted from the team. Furthermore, it was clear to me that everything that goes on around the club is a real team effort and that’s what I love about Palace; everybody is in it together. Of course, it is always nervewracking joining a new team. However, I was fortunate enough that I knew a lot of my teammates just from playing against them over the seasons. Furthermore, I played with Ciara Sherwood and Nicole Pepper during my time in the Women’s Super League with Millwall Lionesses, so it’s great to link up with them again. The pre-season was tough, but that’s what it’s meant to be like! If you want to compete around the top of that league, then that’s what
CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA
you’ve got to do. We are back two weeks earlier than most other teams, and I like that approach. Furthermore, I was doing extra work in my own time to push for a starting place, so it was an honour to be named in the XI for our first game of the season. It was a tough match against Coventry United, but this was expected against a newly-promoted team wanting to make their mark. It was our first competitive game as a newly built squad, so it was always going to be a slightly nervy 90 minutes from both sides. The second game against Durham was positive, despite the result. We said at full time that we’ve now set the level of performance we want to maintain, and against a team that will be competing for the league. We clicked; it was a team performance with everyone hunting in units and it’s something we can build on in the next few weeks.
73
I was delighted to join Crystal Palace this summer, at an exciting time in the club’s growth on and off the pitch. I really do feel like this could be a superb season for the team.
