WE CANNOT LET THE NATURE OF THE DERBY DISTRACT US IN WHAT WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE A HIGHLY-CONTESTED ENCOUNTER

THE MANAGER 05

I know we can rely on you With nine league games left to play, our aim is to finish in a position that gives a truer reflection of our performances, despite not always getting the points we feel we have sometimes deserved.

Over these last few weeks, it is pleasing to have pulled ourselves further away from the relegation zone and within touching distance of mid-table, which is where we want to be. Recent results have given us reason to feel optimistic but it’s important for us all to remember that there is still lot of football to be played. We have some important games coming up against teams around us and are under no illusions that there could still be plenty of twists and turns left in the season, so we must keep focussed and show no signs of complacency. I was delighted to take all three points at Turf Moor last Saturday, particularly from a team that had been in such fine form of late. Once again it was a very solid defensive display which allowed us to control the game and gave us the opportunity for some excellent finishing at the other end of the pitch. It had been a three-game week so I took the opportunity to rotate a few players, some of whom had played every game this season. I was really pleased with the players that stepped in and it is encouraging to see the strength in depth we have in the squad. A special mention must go to Scott Dann who started and completed his first Premier League game for 14 months. It was really good to see him put in such a resolute display after such a long time out with a serious injury. Many of you would have been here to see our last outing at Selhurst Park against Manchester United. They are certainly in a rich vein of form at the

PALACE

v

moment and their quality showed through on the night. Nonetheless, I was pleased with the attitude of our players. Even at 2-0 down we didn’t let the scoreline affect our play and we showed great character to pull a goal back with a superb diving header from Joel Ward. I think the United players’ reaction after getting their decisive goal proved they knew they had been in a difficult game. Next weekend we have a break from the Premier League and of course we are looking forward to an exciting FA Cup quarter-final against Watford, with the winners earning a trip to Wembley. But back to the matter in hand and our early afternoon kick off against Brighton here today. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Chris Hughton, his staff, players and supporters to south London. I know it is one of the first matches that fans look out for when the fixtures are announced, but we cannot let the nature of the derby distract us in what will undoubtedly be a highly-contested encounter. As I have mentioned throughout the season, your magnificent support really does make a difference and I know we can rely on you to be in full voice once again this afternoon. Enjoy the game!

THE FOCUS IS ON BRIGHTON AND BECAUSE IT’S FOR OUR FANS, WE JUST NEED TO BRING THEM THREE POINTS IN WHATEVER WAY.

THE CAPTAIN 07

our fans deserve three points We are playing in good form at the moment and we have to carry on, starting, of course, with today’s game against Brighton.

When we last played at Selhurst, we didn’t show our best against Manchester United. I’m pleased that after that loss we showed our character and our quality by going to Burnley for a very tough game and winning. We were very pleased with that performance, especially in the second half when we played very, very well. We knew that playing against Burnley at Turf Moor wasn’t going to be easy but in the end we got the important three points. Now, let’s say that we are safer from the bottom three so I think we can be a little bit more focussed on other things: we can maybe turn our attention to the FA Cup more. But we can also try to take as many points as we can to finish in the top 10 in the Premier League. That was our aim before the season started so if we manage it, it’ll be an amazing achievement for us. Today’s game is very important because when it’s special for the fans, it must be special for the players as well. If you win against this kind of rival and it means a lot to the fans, it gives you confidence. Everyone is happy and that’s why it means a lot to us because we care about our fans, we try to make them happy every single week. The last time against Brighton, we didn’t play to our best ability but I think our fans deserve three points from this game. We must get them for you; we must try everything to make it for our fans. At Selhurst last season, it was an amazing game. There were five goals in the first half! It was amazing for the fans and in the end, we got the important

PALACE

v

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

three points. It was a very good game and that’s what everyone expected, much like they will again today. In the end, we came away with three points and that’s what we’re going to try to do this afternoon. But of course as with every single game in the Premier League, this will be a tough match. I think this time we don’t need to worry so much about the performance, we just need to focus on points. Maybe we can start thinking about playing nicer football but today, the focus is on Brighton and because it’s for our fans, we just need to bring them three points in whatever way. One last note of encouragement is that we can now call upon more players which is very good for the squad. We changed five players against Burnley and we were still strong and that’s important for us because it can give us even more power for the end of the season. But first things first, let’s get the job done today.

Make some noise!

OUR HOME FORM ISN’T NECESSARILY A FAIR REFLECTION OF THE PERFORMANCES THAT THE TEAM HAS PUT IN, BUT POINTS ARE POINTS – AND THE REALITY IS, WE HAVEN’T SECURED ENOUGH OF THEM AT SELHURST PARK THIS SEASON.

THE CHAIRMAN 09

fierce competition on the pitch Welcome to the supporters, players, staff and directors of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club to Selhurst Park for today’s match, and of course – to each and every Palace fan behind Roy’s team.

Last week was a very successful one with wins over Leicester City and Burnley away from home. Of course the loss to an excellent Manchester United side in between those two victories was tough to take, but to take six points from those games is a great return and certainly eases the pressure on us. It was particularly pleasing to win at Burnley with Roy having made five changes, and just shows the strength in depth of this squad. We now go into another set of pivotal games and I know Roy and the players are focused - it certainly doesn’t hurt that we have our fiercest rivals and then a chance of a cup semi-final at stake. Today’s match is a fantastic occasion for everyone lucky enough to be inside this stadium. It is a great rivalry, one that both clubs enjoy – even if it’s a head-scratcher for the rest of the football world. The distance between our clubs is 42 miles and whilst we are surrounded by London clubs, technically we are the closest Premier League team for Brighton geographically. But this one is about more than the mileage - it's a proper rivalry that stems from fierce competition on the pitch. Brighton got the better of us at the AMEX this season, so there is added motivation to get a result today, in this, the 101st meeting between the sides. With so much to play for in this Premier League season, I hope it lives up to expectations – especially with the eyes of the world on us today as a major television selection. It’s amazing to note that we’re ranked sixth in the league table for our results on the road this season. I

PALACE

v

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

agree with Roy that our home form isn’t necessarily a fair reflection of the performances that the team has put in, but points are points – and the reality is, we haven’t secured enough of them at Selhurst Park this season. A win today would certainly help redress the balance. Last season’s game was a crazy affair with a 3-2 win courtesy of a Wilf brace and James Tomkins’ strike. It came out as your most enjoyable win in a recent poll, although our recent win at Manchester City might top it for many! I won’t get the chance to speak to you before Watford away, but we’ve been restricted to 3,000 which is a great shame as we could have sold many, many more. I know the 3,000 will sound like 5,000 as we aim to get to Wembley and another great occasion for all of us. Last but certainly not least congratulations to Jeffrey Schlupp on winning February’s ManBetX Player of the Month award, voted by the fans. Jeffrey has given us some outstanding performances and scored important goals, and he’s always a positive force around the club. Everyone is pleased for him, and long may it continue. Let’s turn up the noise as much as possible today, and show the world the very best of Selhurst Park.

Up The Palace!

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Brighton & Hove Albion // Saturday 9th March // Selhurst Park

Today's game Crystal Palace host Brighton and Hove Albion today for another instalment of a historic rivalry which finds its roots most prominently in the late 1970s. Today sees the two clubs facing-off as close not only in their rivalry but in their league position too, as Palace sit above Brighton by only two places and a slim three points. What gives the Eagles the edge, however, is their superior goal difference with just -4 compared to the Seagulls behind on -11. It means that whatever happens today, the visitors would have to win by a margin greater than three to overtake Palace before they play their game in hand later in the season. However, current form suggests that it is the hosts who are favourites in this clash. Brighton recorded their first league win since January 5th over bottom of the table Huddersfield Town last Saturday whereas Palace have won three of their last five, scoring 11 times in the process. In their last clash at Selhurst Park, these two sides showcased a great first half of football as the Eagles ultimately ran-out as 3-2 victors. Wilfried Zaha bagged a brace that day to see the Seagulls concede a goal in 13 consecutive Premier League games, the longest such run in the competition. With today's match being the 101st between these two clubs, Brighton have the edge when it comes to wins with 39 compared to Palace's 36.

Michy Batshuayi has scored two goals in his last three appearances – a quarter of Palace’s total in that time.

Newsroom SCHLUPP SCOOPS FAN AWARD Jeffrey Schlupp was voted by fans as ManBetX Player of the Month for February. In the course of the month, Schlupp scored twice from five matches, in which he played every minute bar six. He also recorded an assist and won a penalty, his efforts leading the Eagles to wins over Fulham and Doncaster Rovers in a month they would be victors in three clashes. With 24% of the vote, he beat Wilfried Zaha to earning the award as the Ivorian forward ended up a close second on 22%. Having been presented with the trophy, Schlupp said: "I'm delighted. I feel like I've found some consistency in my play and we've done well. We've been on a good run and I've managed to chip in with a few goals and assists and obviously I'm really happy. "It's always nice to feel appreciated and the fans are who we do it for. To see that they're happy with performances and for them to vote for it makes it extra special. "I'm very honoured to have got this award and I want to thank all the fans who voted for me. Hopefully I can continue playing well and keep chipping in to hopefully get more of these!"

ANDROS’ CITY SCREAMER WINS GOAL OF THE YEAR Andros Townsend was awarded Goal of the Year at the London Football Awards last week, for his astonishing volley in the Eagles' 3-2 victory away to Premier League champions Manchester City. Collecting the award in Battersea, Townsend said: "It's a huge honour for me. It was a special occasion for myself, for Crystal Palace. To get a win at the Etihad is no mean feat. It's a goal and a win I'll never forget for the rest of my career." Townsend's strike was selected by a panel of 22 experts including former professional footballers such as Tony Cottee, Bob Wilson and Bobby Zamora in an evening which rewarded the very best of London football.

JOEL WARD

Close to entering his seventh year with Crystal Palace, Joel Ward has quietly and understatedly earned himself a place in the club’s history books. Holding the most ever Premier League appearances for an Eagles player, here he reflects with Ben Mountain on a career in SE25 replete with highs, Wembley clashes and fond memories of historic victories.

18 JOEL WARD

Joining the squad against Brighton today in a game not quite as pivotal as that won in 2013, Ward’s time in SE25 has ensured that he hasn’t lost sight of what the rivalry still means for the fans, a place at Wembley at stake or not. “For us and for the club it’s a huge game,” he said. “We know the emphasis is on it: 1) for the league, 2) for the club and 3) for the fans. We want to make sure that we go out there and put in a performance. “The atmosphere will naturally lift because it’s a derby and because there’s a little bit more going on behind the scenes. But the fans are great and the fans lift the team when things are tough and they lift the team as the twelfth man for us. They’re integral to our season and the success that we get in it. “From day one, it’s been incredible and been a great time and I’ve always had a lot of praise – the continued support from the fans has not gone unnoticed. The fans have got our back through thick and thin. “I’ve loved my time at the club, playing the number of games I’ve played, it’s been great. I know it’s almost unheard of now, people staying at a club for a few seasons but I’ve loved my time here, the fans have been incredible, the support has been great and it’s been a great journey that we’ve been on.” From the start, Joel Ward has been through it all with Palace. Via one dark south coast evening and one glorious Wembley afternoon, he’s seen the club grow from Championship hopefuls to established Premier League competitors and stayed at his adoptive home ever since. And, as last Wednesday’s heroics showed, he’s not done here yet.

"I’VE LOVED MY TIME HERE, THE FANS HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE, THE SUPPORT HAS BEEN GREAT AND IT’S BEEN A GREAT JOURNEY THAT WE’VE BEEN ON"

It was an Everton goalkeeper shirt which my parents got me for Christmas. Neville Southall was my idol and I had his name on the back.

That was when I went on loan to Stockport County from Wolves, and it was green and white. It’s actually similar to the Palace shirt I wear now!

My main one is the one I wore in the semi-finals of the Euros against Portugal which was an Adidas blue one. It’s framed and hanging up in my house now.

2000-2004

100 YEARS OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

PART 17

26 PROGRAMME HISTORY

2000/01 Following the reduction of backroom staff during Palace’s first administration period with Simon Jordan as the new owner, the programme was now in the hands of Communications Manager Terry Byfield and was expanded to 68 pages but still priced at £2. There was a familiar feel with the usual selection of articles and with Jordan having his own prominent views, his ‘Viewpoint’ section usually made for interesting reading. Palace Ladies were also assigned an outlet and the week’s visitors were afforded eight pages spread throughout the production. A new feature was ‘Fan In Focus’ in which a supporter gave their account of following the club with several strange stories about being a Palace fan providing some amusing recollections. ‘First Sight’ provided a review over Division One and a mix of seven staff and fans gave their forecasts for other matches being played in the division that day. There were three pages of statistics and results while the ever expanding first team squad containing over thirty players filled a large column of the rear page.

2001/02 The programme, now reduced by four pages, changed printers and though the content of a programme is usually constant through the season, in this campaign there were three contributors to ‘From The Manager’: Steve Bruce, Steve Kember (as ‘Assistant Manager’) and Trevor Francis. As the managerial situation unfolded, Jordan would not be holding back in opinions in ‘Chairman’s Viewpoint’. There was also a significant increase in the amount of advertising and ‘Palace Lifeline’, set up by former chairman Ron Noades, had now morphed into 'Golden Eagles' with its own page as did the club’s first loyalty points system with ‘TeamCard’. The visitors were still well catered for with ‘A-Z of Memorable Moments’ and ‘Over The Years’ reminding supporters both of salient players and games between the clubs.

PALACE

v

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

PROGRAMME HISTORY 27

2002/03

2003/04

There was another change of printer, this time to Fulmar Colour Printing, and a page increase up to 80 that meant the programme would cost £2.50 to purchase. Throughout the season the front cover included a picture of Palace fans, who were standing most of the time. More pages meant there was a selection of new articles and these included ‘Employee Of The Month’, an interview with the matchday referee and ‘Celebrity Chat’, which was an interview with a Palace supporting personality. Making a return, albeit under a slightly different title, was ‘Fan’s Profile’ and it is worth noting that details of the Reserve and Academy teams were expanded together, with a half page entitled ‘Academy Questionnaire’ featuring one of the juniors. The four pages on Palace’s visitors were boosted to seven, looking at connections between the clubs as well as a previous encounter. Nigel Sands also penned a piece entitled ‘Match Of The Month’, choosing an impressive game from throughout Palace’s history. All in all, this programme was a significant improvement over the previous season and it earned a ‘Programme of the Season’ award resultingly.

Although the price remained the same the number of pages was reduced by 20% to 64 and the front cover continued with a picture of supporters. There was a subtle change to the front in the course of the season, containing the club name over three issues during February 2004. That produced for a game against Gillingham (pictured) was unique in its design. Having three managers during this Division One campaign meant that the manager’s notes were penned by Iain Dowie as ‘Iain Writes’ from December. Even though there were fewer pages, the content did not give the appearance of being diminished with a sizeable amount of reading – however ‘Employee Of The Month’, ‘Celebrity Chat’ and ‘Fan’s Profile’ were seemingly rejected this time around. An addition in the stats section was the number of fans who had travelled to/from Selhurst Park – West Ham United and Norwich City each brought over 7,000 to SE25 while a Tuesday evening in November witnessed 230 Palace fans heading to Stoke City. Squad names and numbers appeared on the back page and unfamiliar names against numbers 35 and 36 had been given to two fans who had paid for the privilege throughout the season.

ast summer, Luke Pritchard posted a picture on Instagram to celebrate his engagement to fellow musician Ellie Rose, both of them wearing Palace shirts. Fans of the multimillion record selling singer did a double take – isn’t he from Brighton? Whilst Pritchard’s band did indeed spend their formative years together on the south coast, three-quarters of the original line-up met at The BRIT School in Croydon. And Pritchard is as south London as they come. News of the singer's football allegiance has lay dormant, but he is keen to set the record straight: “Football was always a bone of contention in the band, because our old drummer Paul was a big Brighton fan. It sometimes tested our

patience with each other! Maybe that’s why I’d not really talked about it before.” The Sydenham born singer-songwriter went to his first Palace game with his uncle when he was at primary school, aged seven or eight, and the Eagles’ home ground had a lasting impression on him. “Selhurst Park is the best atmosphere without a doubt of anywhere I’ve ever been to. I think it’s legendary. I just love Palace, man, it’s the most real deal team in the Premier League. You know, the community spirit and the stadium is amazing.”

" WHAT I LOVE ABOUT PALACE IS THERE’S SO MUCH HEART" The Kooks, named after a David Bowie track, are currently touring their fifth studio album, Let’s Go Sunshine. Featuring on the record is a Pritchard-penned track titled Swing Low – inspired by his football club and the drum situated in the Lower Holmesdale. “What I love about Palace is there’s so much heart. I wanted to write a song imagining going through the tunnel, preparing for the game. I was trying to put myself in that position, and write a tune that would evoke that emotion and fighting spirit. It was a fun thing to do, and I hope that people get that feeling from it.” Living in south London once again, Pritchard has fond memories of his young adulthood in Croydon. “I just remember trying to get into pubs when I was underage. It was a stomping ground for me. I don’t know

lukewhereyougoing

40 CARRY ME HOME

how much it’s changed, but I remember hanging out in parks, playing football and drinking White Lightning! “Musically, it was one of the first places I played – I can’t even remember their names, but little pubs in Croydon that would let me take my acoustic guitar and play, so it’s a special place for me. It’s about time I came back to see how it’s all kicking off!” Back in 2005 when the band first emerged on the indie scene, they were to receive a lot of stick from the music press for their stage school education, but Pritchard remains proud of their roots. He said: “It’s funny. There’s a similarity I think with The Kooks and Palace, we’re kind of like the underdogs. We were always the underdogs, there were rivalries at the time with the Arctic Monkeys and Razorlight and people like that. There was a bit of a ‘oh, stage school’ kind of thing. Now it’s completely shifted. “We as a band, we had a good impact on the industry - being proud of doing pop hooks, and not being too cool for school. Yeah, we did go to a music college and were quite open about it. Then you saw how many people now come from those places and are proud of it. At the time, it was frustrating but you’ve always got to be proud of yourself – it’s always better to stand up and be honest and stay true to what you are. We are from BRIT School, and that’s who we are.”

" WE ARE FROM BRIT SCHOOL, AND THAT’S WHO WE ARE" The music scene in south London is firmly back on the map, albeit primarily due to a resurgent genre at the opposite end of the musical spectrum. But the attention

and plaudits the area is receiving hasn’t gone unnoticed by one of its residents. “I really have felt it. Obviously, the grime scene with Giggs, Stormzy and there’s a lot of amazing music coming out of south London. Also you’ve got Bastille from Elephant & Castle. “I live in Kennington now, and there’s definitely a shift in people’s perceptions of south London. There was a bit of snottiness about south, and there still probably is a bit. “East London got so over saturated, and the music got a bit boring y’know? Another hipster band, another hipster band, you know what I mean? Another person with a moustache… so it’s exciting, there’s a lot of studios popping up too. I feel proud of it.”

" ZAHA IS SUCH A LEGEND, HE LOOKS LIKE A ROCK STAR" It’s not just Croydon that’s got its swagger back, Palace’s players have received social media fame for their outrageous levels of 'sauce', a term that wouldn’t be out of place directed at the effortlessly stylish Pritchard. The frontman can see the fans’ point: “Ha! Zaha is such a legend, he does look like a rock star. “Being a musician you’re meant to look stylish, but footballers might be outdoing us at the moment potentially – so we might have to up our game! The one thing I don’t like particularly in football these days is the man-bun! I have a problem with that, that went too far.” Turning attention to today’s fixture, is there a

" THERE’S A THE KOO SIMILARITY I THIN K ALWAYS T S AND PALACE, W K WITH E WERE HE UNDE RDOGS" sense of divided loyalties for a proud south Londoner with a soft spot for Brighton? “I think it’s actually quite quality that Brighton are in the Premier League, and are actually competing now. Ha ha ha! Brighton is actually a real deal team, they have great supporters too like Palace do – so there are similarities there, which is probably why there is the rivalry. “But at the end of the day, I’m a Londoner, and it’s time to come out of my shell and shout about Palace.” That’s settled, then.

The manager Chris Hughton successfully guided Brighton to the Premier League for the 2017/18 campaign, securing 40 points and 15th place. A former left-back who collected 53 international caps for Republic of Ireland, Hughton spent most of his career at Tottenham Hotspur between 1979 and 1990, winning the FA Cup twice and the UEFA Cup. His time at Spurs continued for a further 14 years in a coaching capacity, before securing the top job at Newcastle United, Birmingham City and Norwich City prior to Albion.

Club legend Zamora struck 90 goals for the Seagulls across two spells. Joining on loan in February 2000, six goals in six games was enough to convince then-manager Micky Adams to recruit him permanently for a reported fee of £100,000. His 77 goals that followed in that time were pivotal in the club’s back-to-back title-winning campaigns of 2000/01 and 2001/02. Zamora would go on to play for Fulham under Roy Hodgson, where he would receive two England call-ups. Returning to Brighton for the 2015/16 season, Zamora scored seven before a hip injury struck, and Albion’s season ended in play-off heartbreak.

Having played in England, Spain, Belgium and his native Australia, the 26-year-old is an experienced goalkeeper for his age. In the league this season, he has kept five clean sheets – two of which came in his last four games. Murray, a former Palace man, rose to fame when he netted 31 goals in one season to lead the Eagles to promotion in 2012-13. Now back with Brighton after a spell with AFC Bournemouth – whom he joined Palace from – Murray has regained his goalscoring form, bagging 10 goals from 29 appearances. He will perhaps always be best remembered by supporters of both teams, however, for netting the third of Palace’s three goals in the last 10 minutes of a storming 3-1 win at the AMEX in 2011, particularly riling-up one Seagull fan in particular... Things you didn't know... ABOUT BRIGHTON

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brighton & Hove Albion were mistakenly believed to have been founded in 1900, but in 1998 it was discovered that this was in fact the inception of Brighton and Hove Rangers. Albion were formed the following year in the Seven Stars pub, taking over Rangers’ place in the Southern League. The club were Sussex’s only Football League team from 1920-2011, when Crawley Town were promoted.

Charlie Webb had a long and distinguished career with the Seagulls. He scored the winner for them in the 1910 Charity Shield against Aston Villa, having bought himself out of the army to play football. He re-enlisted at the outbreak of World War I, and was promoted to captain. He was captured by Germans in 1918 and was offered the Brighton manager’s job by letter while in a prisoner-of-war camp. He managed the club from 1919 to 1947.

Brighton did not always have the nickname ‘Seagulls’. They were originally known as the Dolphins, reflecting the dolphin on Brighton city’s coat-of-arms. However, as the rivalry with the Eagles increased, ‘Seagulls’ was adopted by club director Derek Chapman as a supposed avian response to Palace’s moniker.

PALACE

CHRIS WATERS 51

Steve Foster was one of the club’s most recognisable players, with his shock of black hair and thick white sweatband. The sweatband actually served a practical purpose as he was unable to head the ball without protection over a wound that would otherwise open upon impact, an injury accidentally inflicted on him by a collision with ex-Sky pundit Andy Gray.

Foster missed the 1983 FA Cup Final against Manchester United having picked up a booking in the first five minutes of an earlier league game against Notts County. Knowing a red card would bizarrely allow him to play the final, he attempted numerous fouls in the second half against County but the referee knew what he was doing and wouldn’t send him off. He even caught the ball at one point but it was to no avail. Ironically, he was able to lead Albion out for the final’s replay, which they lost 4-0.

Brighton goalkeeper Perry Digweed made over 170 appearances for the Seagulls between 1981 and 1993 before winding down his career with Watford. Six years later he made an appearance of a very different kind, acting alongside Vinnie Jones in the film Mean Machine. Also featuring Jason Statham and a number of other ex-footballers in its line-up, the drama received mixed reviews.

As recently as 1997, the Seagulls were scrapping at the bottom of the Football League. They faced Hereford in the last game of the season, knowing a draw would see them survive and the Bulls be relegated. Robbie Reinelt was the hero of the hour with a second half equaliser and the match finished 1-1.

Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that saw the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

56 THE GLORY YEARS

1968/69

David

Payne

Born a stone’s throw away from Selhurst, how did your debut for your local club come about? Ron Heckman, a former Palace player, was the football coach at my school in Catford and he arranged a game at Selhurst Park one evening against a trialist XI. Arthur Rowe was in the stand and he must have been impressed with what he saw from me at 15-years-old. The manager at the time, Dick Graham, then signed me as an apprentice at the beginning of January in 1964 and I was soon given the opportunity to make my debut at 17 in midfield against Leicester City. Gordon Banks was in goal for them on the night and kept a clean sheet as we came away with a 0-0 draw. That game also saw a debut for Paul Cutler. He was a year older than me but we both went to the same primary school and we both received a telegram of congratulations from our former headmaster. We owe a lot to Dick Graham for handing us our debut so early in our career.

a few signings, we could see that the squad had been strengthened in the right way ready to push in the right direction. Mel Blyth had come in from Scunthorpe, Colin Taylor made the move from Walsall and the manager had been scouting up in Scotland so he signed a couple of lads from Greenock Morton: Tony Taylor and John Loughlan.

How do you look back on the squad which included several pre-season additions that achieved the club’s promotion to the top flight for the first time? It was a season we went into with optimism as the year before we had finished mid-table and, with

PALACE

on so we had the momentum to be one of the league’s stronger teams.

Derby County were the champions of the division that season under Brian Clough. Just how much did their abilities impress you? They were a very good side and deservedly champions in that league. They ended the unbeaten run we were on when they beat us at Selhurst but later in the season we went up there and won 1-0. It was quite a strange game because we had the ball in the net on four other occasions but all got disallowed for one reason or another. How much belief did the second half of the season instil in the squad after a tough run in challenging winter weather? We had some bad weather at the turn of the year which meant we had several games postponed but the work levels continued at the training ground as our coach at the time, George Petchey, put us through our sessions really hard. We were left wondering why he was so tough on us with no games to play but he was ensuring we were well prepared for our run later

PALACE

v

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

Fifty years on, how do you look back on that season now? I felt I completed a good season against some tough opponents in a competitive league. That run after Christmas was incredible and I firmly believe that the break due to the poor weather gave us some much needed time to get together to ensure we were ready for that crucial closing stage of the season. The game which made me start to believe we could do it was that victory up at Derby. We went out there and won 1-0 against the best side in the league, which was a fantastic achievement and really put out a statement from us.

ORMAN HUNTER hates Selhurst Park. The former England international got himself on the wrong side of the crowd with an indescribable tackle on John Craven six years ago when he came with Leeds United. Hunter was lucky to escape then, but his luck ran out on Monday when diminutive referee Kevin McNally waved yellow and red cards at him in the space of one minute. Hunter, head bowed, moved slowly to the dressing room, while behind him Bristol City were positively hurrying out of the FA Cup. Mr McNally was not done. Pipecleaner-thin Tom Ritchie was spotted late in the game lashing out a foot at Ian Walsh and then had to use both feet to trek all the way off the field. With four other yellow cards flashing in the crisp night air, Mr McNally can probably claim overtime. And so another First Division outfit crash, suggesting that the standard at the top is not what it is cracked up to be. Set the matter straight, Bristol may have been below par but they were beaten with something to spare by a Palace side full of running, full of desire and full of competitiveness. Palace goalkeeper John Burridge was certainly far busier during his lonely warm-up session and could have spent the evening in his local bingo hall for all he had to do.

No one deserved a goal more than Steve Kember, brought back from Leicester for ÂŁ40,000 in October and bossing the midfield with sure foot on the rather tricky, but surprisingly good, surface. So there was a special cheer when Kember ghosted into the area with four minutes left and fastened on to a low cross from Dave Swindlehurst, who had made a penetrating run down the left, and speared it home. It could have been more than 3-0 because Bristol, hustled and harried as they never are in the First Division, seemed to be fast running out of puff. The game began rather eerily without a soul in

PALACE

to register his first senior goal for the club. How the 21,463 strong crowd roared when Walsh hit a low centre, Kember jumped over it and Swindlehurst tapped home – only to mutter some lively adjectives when it was ruled out. Swindlehurst was unlucky when he headed a Sansom cross against the crossbar and down to the dumps where he, too, was booked for kicking the ball into the stand. Kember’s goal lifted the crowd and the match ended as it began with another booking, Ritchie getting his marching orders. view at the Holmesdale Road end, closed because of the dangerous footholds. Mr McNally was soon springing towards his overworked pencil when Cormack was booked and Gerry Cow went in for a foul on Ken Sansom. Sandwiched between, Palace took a 20th-minute lead. Kember’s corner was woefully misjudged by Shaw, Tainton hacked half-heartedly clear and Peter Nicholas drove firmly home through the crowd. Mr McNally wrote that down and did not have time to put his pencil away before entering the Nicholas name for a foul. Six minutes into the second half Hunter raised Kember’s wrath with a wild tackle. Into the book he went and, when Jim Cannon charged through a minute later, Hunter, last man in a defence that was torn apart, hacked him down. Curtains for Mr Hunter. Four minutes later, it was curtains for Bristol when Gillies lost the ball to Sansom, whose cross was latched on to by Terry Fenwick. He joyously drove home a low shot

Season Part 5

T

he beginning of March 1989 found the Eagles just outside the play-off places but with games in hand over the clubs above them. Palace would have to play a total of 14 matches over the next nine weeks, one of which lasts very long in the memory. Steve Coppell’s assistant Ian Evans had left to take over at Swansea City and Stan Ternent arrived to help out for the next three months while captain Geoff Thomas underwent a stomach operation. Things didn’t start well with a midweek defeat at Oxford United as Ian Wright served the second half of a two-match ban. It was no better three days later at Selhurst Park where Bournemouth inflicted a 2-3 setback that saw Wright miss a penalty. This result put the Eagles in mid-table. With Chelsea and Manchester City seemingly set for the two automatic promotion places, even Coppell admitted Palace ‘would be looking for snookers’ to get into the play-offs. Matters improved when a solitary Mark Bright penalty defeated Sunderland before Easter. Good Friday witnessed another single goal victory, this time at Watford thanks to a cool finish from Phil Barber. Easter Monday brought Brighton and Hove Albion to SE25 for an encounter in which the referee Kelvin Morton would award five spot-kicks. Victory over the south coast rivals would reignite hopes of the play-offs for Palace. The game started in ordinary fashion but midway through the first half, Wright launched stunning

shot from thirty yards to open the scoring. Minutes later the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Trusson was sent off for a bad tackle on Eddie McGoldrick. It was shortly before half-time that Morton pointed to the spot when Bright was fouled and the striker netted the resultant kick. Almost instantly afterwards, the referee awarded a second penalty for the Eagles but Bright saw his effort scrambled away to safety. Astonishingly a third spot kick in favour of the home team came, but this time Ian Wright stepped up only to hit the post. Penalty number four arose early in the second half and this time Brighton benefitted with Alan Curbishley netting well. However, Palace’s John Pemberton failed to note his technique and when the fifth penalty came midway through the half, he skied the ball high and wide.

Perry Suckling then ensured victory with a couple of fine saves as the league’s record books were re-written. With three successive victories under their belt, momentum was halted when then-bogey team Shrewsbury Town triumphed 1-2 on April Fool’s Day. A mid-week trip to Elland Road witnessed a successful penalty by Dave Madden as the Eagles returned from Leeds with a 2-1 victory that took them into sixth place and when Oldham Athletic were dispatched 2-0 on the following Saturday, there was a bit of daylight put between the Eagles and the following pack. It was turning out to be a good month as another Yorkshire trip saw a Wright goal take all three points at lowly Hull City and with a 2-0 success over Portsmouth, a play-off place was becoming a definite reality. A Bright brace took care of Plymouth Argyle at Home Park but the possibility of catching Manchester City in second place became seemingly impossible with a single goal defeat at Swindon Town. A contender for Goal of the Season was sufficient to defeat West Bromwich Albion in the last game of the

month as a lofted pass from Bright saw Wright volley the ball home with the side of his foot.

Step Back

In order to promote the club shop and souvenirs available in 1983/84, it was decided to turn the tables by putting the players on the Holmesdale Road terrace and kit them out as supporters. Its success is understandably questionable. DRAW’S SUPER POWER Palace fans who have played the Super Draw this season have funded three new sports wheelchairs for Crystal Palace Powerchair FC, helping the team win its first competitive point since it was founded four years ago. Proceeds from the Palace for Life Super Draw, the club’s matchday lottery, have supported the team’s bid to buy the chairs, which are easier to manoeuver and quicker on court. One of the players, 15-year-old Joel Sprouse, has been with the team since he was 11. Speaking after the team’s recent 1-1 draw with Faversham Town, Joel said: “It’s amazing that people have been supporting us, it means we’re able to be a better team. I’d like to say thank you to all of them. “We’re not at a disadvantage anymore, we’re able to pass the ball more quickly around the pitch. The chairs have got the Palace colours - they look brilliant!” The chairs cost £6,000 each and carry a substantial annual maintenance cost. Further support has been provided by a group of fans who ran the Brighton Half Marathon in Palace kit and Palace Ladies, who held a collection at the game against Manchester United. Palace Powerchair FC’s Head Coach, Michael Harrington, said: “Immediately it’s put a smile on everyone’s face, it’s lifted everyone’s spirits. It means everything to know that people have gone out of their way to support us, whether that’s by buying a Super Draw ticket or taking part in a fundraising event. It shows us that we’re not on our own. “A lot of our players face isolation problems and have a very difficult time, so to know that there are

Andria Georgiou

Understandably, the team struggled early on but we’re improving with every match. After Christmas we picked-up in general as a team and we’re collecting more points now. Because we found out we were going into the Women’s Championship quite late, we lost weeks during pre-season but now we’ve all bonded and played for several months so I think our style of play is becoming a little bit better. We’re looking to get points from every game. Our match against Lewes was special because we had almost 800 fans watching. It was great, coming out of the tunnel and hearing and seeing them all felt amazing. It really does help you when you’re playing. You can always tell when the fans are there because you can hear them singing and of course it makes you feel better because it keeps your momentum going and makes you want to win. I’m gutted though - all I keep hearing is Gemma Bryan’s name and I never hear about me! What they decide to sing for me is up to them though. Let’s see! My family support me in my football and watched the Lewes match from home. I told my family to watch it on YouTube. It makes a huge difference because primarily you want to win the game but you also want to have a good performance on a personal level. Sadly for us, it wasn’t our day at the office. As soon as I got to my car after the match, my family rang me and said that the result was a shame but they thought I did well on the ball. They were happy that they could watch on YouTube

PALACE

v

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

though because it was my godbrother’s birthday on the day so they couldn’t make it. They had an excuse - which I wasn’t happy about! My style is quite attacking and I love to have the ball at my feet. I like playing one-twos and passing either short or long balls. I like tiki-tika football. I’ve been playing in the number 10 role but since Gemma has come back, Ashlee Hincks has been playing there and I’ve moved into being a number 8. I’m quite an attacking midfielder. I don’t mind where I play as long as I’m on the pitch and helping the team. At Palace, we really try to play out from the back. When that’s not on, we look to hit positive areas on the field so that we can build an attack from the wings. We’ve got a lot of pace going forward, so this approach works well. I’m a PE teacher for kids aged three to eight. You can’t really teach them much at the younger ages, just throwing and catching! As long as they’re smiling, I’m happy. I try to teach them a thing or two about football and to be fair, the older ones are okay. They know I play for Palace because I also run a football club for the older ones and they ask me how my game’s going. Obviously at their age, they might just think that men play football so it’s good to have a female coach so they can see that girls can play football as well. Growing up, boys might think that girls don’t play football but now the women’s game is getting bigger. Now, attention is coming to us and that’s helping the younger generation.

74 FINAL SCORE

LEICESTER CITY 1 CRYSTAL PALACE 4 Saturday 23rd February 2019

Crystal Palace stole three points from the relentlessly offensive Leicester City thanks to goals from Michy Batshuayi, Wilfried Zaha and Luka Milivojevic. Leicester saw chance after chance go begging, with Jamie Vardy, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans all coming close to scoring early on. Well against the run of play, however, Palace took the lead through a sharplooking Batshuayi. As James McArthur fired an effort goalbound, his strike cannoned off the Belgian striker past the wrong-footed Kasper Schmeichel.

LINE-UPS

Palace’s newly discovered grip was then shattered when Jonny Evans turned home the ball from eight yards. Ignited by the equaliser, Palace regained the lead as Zaha buried an astute cross from McArthur to restore the Eagles’ advantage. Defending the rebound from a saved Batshuayi effort, Evans then fouled Jeffrey Schlupp in the box before Milivojevic netted the resulting penalty. Having been thread through by Jordan Ayew, Zaha slammed the ball home to record his second goal and Palace’s joint-biggest win of the season.

Crystal Palace fell to a harsh-looking scoreline as an inform Manchester United side bagged three goals. Romelu Lukaku enjoyed a host of chances as the game warmed-up, and finally netted with a smart finish from 18-yards. Immediately responding, Andros Townsend whipped in a sublime cross which Jeffrey Schlupp met just a little too softly as he glanced the ball over. Opening the second half, the Red Devils’ dominance saw Lukaku double his tally following a defensive scramble. Vicente Guaita flung himself at his feet but the

Belgian hooked the ball home under pressure. Zaha came close for the Eagles when he fancifully stepped past Ashley Young before shooting from a tight angle. De Gea, however, was equal to the effort. Palace’s opener eventually came when Schlupp broke free to crack a cross high to his right which Joel Ward hurled himself at with success. Well on-top, the Eagles were to have their hopes of a comeback shattered when Young struck home with venom from a shallow angle in the box.
