THE GAMES WILL BE COMING THICK AND FAST FOR A WHILE NOW, SO WE JUST HAVE TO FOCUS THE PLAYERS’ MINDS ON THE NEXT ONE AND TAKE THEM AS THEY COME
THE MANAGER 05
BE VOCAL AND roar us on After last weekend’s excellent display at Manchester United, I am hoping that the players can use the confidence gained by that result to get us three points this afternoon. I was very impressed by our performance at Old Trafford which is, traditionally, one of the hardest places to go in the Premier League. It tells you everything about our efforts there that we came away a little disappointed that we didn’t manage to beat a side who finished runners-up last season. Our defence was rock-solid throughout and there were many composed performances which lasted throughout the 90 minutes. Even after they dipped into their wealth of talent to introduce the likes of Marcus Rashford, Marouane Fellaini and Alexis Sanchez from the bench, we stood up to the challenge and actually caused them plenty of problems of our own late on in the game. That was our sixth clean sheet of the season in all competitions, so massive credit has to go to the defence for being so strong. Now we have come through a tough run of games, hopefully we will manage to create even more shooting opportunities in the coming weeks and thereby fill our strikers with confidence, helping to achieve the perfect balance between attack and defence. To come through a series of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United and only be beaten twice is a great morale booster for us, but now we have to use that as a catalyst ahead of the upcoming festive fixtures. We have seven games in December so we have to be prepared for that, but it gives us an opportunity

to build up momentum as we aim to pull ourselves up the table at a key point in the campaign. We managed to do it this time last year, so I’m confident we can do so again. Burnley come to south London this afternoon, and I would like to welcome Sean Dyche, his players and staff to Selhurst. We are still awaiting our first victory on home soil this season, but we have been competitive in every fixture here so I’m expecting a tough, tight game once again, but hopefully one that will see us come out on top and finally give you something to celebrate as you depart this evening. After today we obviously have a massive game that all our fans will be looking forward to against Brighton on Tuesday night, but as much as we want to give you a derby day to remember we can’t think too much about that right now. The games will be coming thick and fast for a while now, so we just have to focus the players’ minds on the next one and take them as they come. There is no doubting though that we have two huge games in the space of three days, so both here at Selhurst and on Tuesday at the Amex Stadium, please be as vocal as you can and roar us on. Enjoy the game!
OUR PERFORMANCES HAVE BEEN SOMETHING THAT GIVES US BIG HOPE AND SO WE ARE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO TODAY
THE CAPTAIN 07
THE BOYS HAVE BEEN IN A GOOD MOOD After losing narrowly to Tottenham Hotspur last time we were at Selhurst, it was good to bounce back by getting a great point at Manchester United last weekend.
The Spurs game went the same way as the previous three or four; we played a really good game and didn’t deserve to lose, but after one corner kick we conceded. We had two or three good chances to equalise but in the end we lost. It was disappointing that we didn’t manage to score one of those, but we are working hard on it. However, games are totally different to training and from my point of view maybe we need a little more composure in front of goal. We need to be calmer and concentrate harder when we try to score, and that’s all we’re missing at the moment as we’re creating a lot of chances but not scoring much, but we hope in the future that will change. We didn’t score against Manchester United, but if someone had come to us before the game to ask if we wanted a point, we would have said yes. However, if you watched the whole game you would have seen we could have taken all three, but a draw is still good. A lot of times this season we have played well in games but our opponents created a couple of chances and scored and we ended up with nothing to show for a good performance. During the game I was on the wrong end of a bad tackle from Marouane Fellaini, but thankfully I’m OK. It was a bad one but that’s part of football and you can’t do anything about it. The most important thing is that I’m healthy and I can be in the squad for today’s game. The result at Old Trafford has given us confidence
PALACE

heading into four or five games against opponents where we are thinking we can get some points. The boys have been in a good mood this week. We believe in ourselves and we want to continue to play like we play, and eventually the goals will come. I don’t think we have a problem at the moment; some might say we do if you look at our points tally, but our performances have been something that gives us big hope and so we are really looking forward to today. In the Premier League no game is easy, which we proved in our last four games against top opposition. We could easily have won two of those games, so people might be expecting us to beat Burnley but it won’t be easy. I’ve watched them a few times this season against Olympiakos and also on Monday against Newcastle United and they like to play direct and have big guys up front, but the coaching staff know how to prepare for that so I’m hoping that will help us get our first home victory. We just have to try and repeat our performance from last weekend and create as much as we can in previous games, and hopefully this time we will convert our chances. Make some noise!
I THINK IT’S FAIR TO SAY THAT THE QUALITY OF THE PERFORMANCES AGAINST ARSENAL, CHELSEA, TOTTENHAM AND MANCHESTER UNITED WERE BETTER THAN THE TWO POINTS WE GAINED
THE CHAIRMAN 09
Delighted to hear the volume go up Welcome to the supporters, players, staff and directors of Burnley FC who have made the long journey south today, and to each and every Palace fan in south London this afternoon.
I’m sure I speak for everyone when saying I’m thankful November is done and dusted! The fixture list wasn’t exactly kind to us, but I think it’s fair to say that the quality of the performances against Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United were better than the two points we gained, especially at Old Trafford where I especially thought the players deserved more. December sees a run of games that present different but no lesser challenges, starting today against a Sean Dyche side who achieved something extraordinary last season in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League. I’m sure they will also be disappointed with their league position, so I fully expect today’s match to be a hard-fought encounter. I’m delighted for Wayne Hennessey, who won two fan votes this week after being named Man of the Match for his performance against United, and the ManBetX Player of the Month. Both are richly deserved; Wayne is a hugely popular member of the group and whilst it hasn’t always been plain sailing for him here, these awards show just how far he has come in the minds of our supporters. The competition provided by Julian and Vicente will no doubt have driven Wayne on, as well as the training and support from our goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely. I enjoyed watching our under-23s stun Charlton Athletic 4-0 on Monday, and we are on an impressive run of results in the academy. Credit must go to Gary Issott, Richard Shaw, Paddy McCarthy and all the

staff for the winning culture they have created, and long may it continue. We will FINALLY be making an announcement very soon on the future of the academy. Meanwhile, our Palace Boxpark Takeover on Tuesday night was another huge success. To see so many Palace fans come out to meet the players was fantastic, and it’s an event I’m so proud that we do. Our Ladies team are finding life in the Women’s Championship tough - as we fully expected - but they are fighting for every point and hopefully will get a result against Aston Villa tomorrow. Everyone at Selhurst today can watch that game at Bromley FC for just £2.50 tomorrow, with under-16s going free. We had a record attendance of 975 for the Manchester United game, so it would be great to build on that. It was very sad to hear of the passing of Darren Pitcher this week. He was someone I remember as a great player for the club, who was totally committed on the field and not shy of a hard tackle. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. I was delighted to hear the volume go up for the Spurs game. It felt much more like Palace and I am sure today we will go one step further and really make the place come alive again, as we aim to get that allimportant home win. Up The Palace!
10 TODAY'S GAME
Crystal Palace v Burnley // Saturday 1st December // Selhurst Park
Today's game Palace will be hoping that Burnley’s poor recent record at Selhurst Park can continue today as the Eagles look to claim their first home win and end their eight-game search for a three-point haul in the process. The Clarets have won just once in their last 12 visits to SE25, and their recent matches in London haven’t given much indication that Sean Dyche’s team can upset the form book this afternoon as they have conceded at least four goals in each of their last three visits to the capital. That has compounded a disappointing start to the season for last year’s surprise package, with the Clarets’ loss to Newcastle United on Monday night leaving them just a point outside the relegation zone, a far cry from their seventh-place finish last term which saw them qualify for the UEFA Europa League. That success was built on defensive resilience as they conceded only 39 goals in the whole league campaign, but already this term they have shipped 27 while their European adventure ended barely before it stated after losing to Olympiakos in the final qualifying round in August. While Palace may have struggled to win at home in 2018/19, Burnley have only enjoyed one victory from their last nine away games in the Premier League - a 2-1 victory over Cardiff City back in September. That is a run that Roy Hodgson hopes continues today as he aims to build momentum heading towards the festive fixtures.
Wilfried zaha is just two goals away from hitting 50 in his career at club and international level – he is Palace’s top scorer this season with three.

Newsroom PALACE BOXPARK TAKEOVER Earlier this week, members of the first-team squad, Roy Hodgson and Steve Parish were all on hand to meet and greet Eagles supporters at the club’s Boxpark Takeover in Croydon. The event allowed those hardy Palace fans who battled against the wet weather the opportunity to come face-to-face with their heroes whilst starting, or indeed finishing off, their Christmas shopping at the various stores at the venue, as well as the chance to pick up some all-important Palace gifts for fellow fans! Hodgson, Parish, skipper Luka Milivojevic and ManBetX Player of the Month Wayne Hennessey all made appearances on stage to be interviewed and address the hundreds in attendance, before eight members of the first-team squad as well as some of the Palace Ladies signed autographs and posed for photos alongside those patient guests. To keep everyone entertained, there were performances from the Crystals cheerleaders and the opportunity to play FIFA19 on the venue’s big screen in front of everyone, while the Palace for Life Foundation were on hand with their fastest shot machine to ensure that everyone had an enjoyable evening.
TWO EX-EAGLES PASS AWAY Crystal Palace have been saddened to hear of the passing of Darren Pitcher, following on from the death of Roger Hoy earlier in the month. Pitcher spent five years at the Eagles between 1994 and 1999 and the midfielder made 83 appearances for the club, scoring two goals before being forced to retire from football due to injury. He was aged 49. Hoy meanwhile signed for the club from Tottenham Hotspur at the start of October 1968 and become part of the team that manager Bert Head built to successfully gain promotion to the First Division for the first time in the club's history. The defensive-minded player made 62 first-team appearances, scoring seven goals. He was 71. Everyone at the club would like to pass on their sincere condolences to both Darren and Roger’s families and friends.

Tomorrow sees Palace Ladies take on Aston Villa in the Women’s Championship, and anyone who presents a ticket from today’s game against Burnley can gain access for just £2.50. The game takes place as Hayes Lane in Bromley and is a 2pm kick-off. HENNESSEY NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH Wayne Hennessey has been voted by supporters as the club’s ManBetX Player of the Month for November. The Welshman impressed in the games against Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur before keeping a clean sheet against Manchester United to garner 63% of the vote. ALEXANDER ON FA COUNCIL At the recent Premier League Shareholders meeting, Palace CEO Phil Alexander was voted onto the FA Council as a Premier League representative. This is the second time Phil has been appointed as a councillor, and is a testimony to his experience in the game and the respect he has from his Premier League peers.
Having been a mainstay of the Palace side for so many years, it has been strange to watch the Eagles go throughout 2018 without Scott Dann as part of their backline. Having been robbed of nearly a year of his career through injury, he talks Jonathon Rogers through the recovery process that has him tantalisingly close to a first-team return.
SCOTT DANN 17
"NEW
YEAR’S EVE WASN’T MUCH FUN"
PALACE
v
BURNLEY
As Big Ben chimed midnight and a nation cast their thoughts towards new beginnings, a gloomy Scott Dann was stuck at home in pain. New Year’s Eve may well be the cruellest day to receive a setback that ruins the entirety of the upcoming year, but that was exactly the situation the centre-back found himself in as he sat staring at his ever-ballooning right knee. He didn’t need the results of an upcoming scan to inform him of the severity of what he had suffered, and how the majority of 2018 would be spent. His hopes of playing a key role in helping his teammates beat the drop were over before the physios could attend to him as he lay stricken on the Selhurst turf in agony, thanks to a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus. That kind of trauma can be soul-destroying for a lot of players, but anyone who has watched the fearless Dann put his body on the line in red and blue knows that he is made of tough stuff. As he was stretchered away out of sight from a concerned crowd, Dann was already calculating how long it might be until he got the chance to perform for them once again. Setting his mind back to that ill-fated goalless draw with Manchester City just over 11 months ago, he said: “I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was trying to block Kevin De Bruyne’s path as he was bursting through and unfortunately he fell on the side of my knee. I knew straight away what I had done, and it didn’t feel great. “New Year’s Eve wasn’t much fun - I obviously couldn’t move very well so I just went back home. I was waiting to have a scan and for the doctors and surgeons to tell me what I’d done, but I knew it wasn’t going to be a short time out. “That process only took around 10 days but it felt like the longest part of the rehab because we had to make sure that the right surgeon was available at the right time, wait for the swelling to go down and then double check everything before the operation.” While Dann knew in his heart of hearts the probable outcome, the prognosis didn't offer a glimmer
18 SCOTT DANN
of hope. An optimistic timeframe of nine to 12 months on the shelf was suggested, but the determined 31-year-old suddenly had something to aim for – the hope that his 2018 could indeed have a happy ending. Having gone under the knife, his comeback trail could begin. It was slow progress at first, hampered by crutches and a leg brace, but the recuperation period allowed him to relax and focus on life away from football. “I’ve had a lot of things to take my mind off it,” he said. “10 minutes after it happened, my son came down to see me and it just put things into perspective and made it easier to deal with. “I’ve got two kids and I’ve invested in some companies which I’m enjoying, so that makes it easy to switch off. Injuries like this used to be career-ending and threaten your future, so you have to do stuff outside of football to make sure you have something to go into afterwards.” As any sidelined sportsman would tell you, after the initial physical pain of the injury subsides and the scars heal, the psychological effects can be just as damaging, but Dann would have plenty of morale support. 90 minutes after he was hauled into the Selhurst changing rooms, the City game claimed another victim as Jason Puncheon suffered an eerily similar innocuous-looking knee injury trying to tame De Bruyne. Finding added solace in Connor Wickham - then a year into his own rehab - the wounded trio leaned on each other heavily as they spent hours in each other’s company during the initial stages of their recoveries. “If you’re injured yourself, you don’t wish anyone else to go through that experience mentally and physically,” Dann added. “Punch got injured on the same day, so for the first couple of months we were both on crutches and getting picked up each day and going to the gym together. “Without really saying it, you do find that you help each other, especially in the early days. When the lads are going out and playing and you’re in the treatment
room by yourself it’s tough, but there was me, Punch and Connor so it did help keep me in a good frame of mind and be amongst the banter. You can’t be all doom and gloom; I believe the more positive you are, the quicker you will get back.” The next milestone in his quest to achieve that came when he was able to swap the treatment room for the gym and build up his strength and mobility,
"THE MORE
POSITIVE YOU ARE, THE QUICKER YOU WILL GET BACK
incentivised to tick off each target with the lure of escaping from Beckenham’s ever-increasingly familiarity. “Every six to eight weeks I had a couple of weeks off,” he revealed. “I spent some good time with the family which you don’t normally get the chance to do, but you come back afterwards refreshed and ready to go for the next phase.” Even the traditional summer holiday wasn’t safe from sacrifice. Dann admitted the most enjoyable moment of his rehab was the day he could begin running again, which frustratingly coincided with the end of the season. As the rest of the Palace squad departed to sunnier climes for some much-needed relaxation, Dann resisted the temptation to put his feet up too and went to some extraordinary lengths in order to hit his nine-month target.

“I took a couple of the fitness coaches away with me with to Portugal, so I could train in the morning and then go back to spend time with the family,” he said. “That meant that when I came back for pre-season I was on the cusp of joining the lads for fitness sessions. “It was just about doing whatever I had to do to get back playing. There’s been a lot of hard work in the gym and long hours with the physios and fitness coaches trying to get me to where I left off. It’s been a long road but it’s made me stronger.”
IT’S BEEN A LONG ROAD, BUT IT’S MADE ME STRONGER That road was shortening all the time. As preseason and the beginning of a new campaign slipped by, so did the days until the Liverpudlian could make his return, which finally happened in October. It wouldn’t be glamourous, and rather than re-emerging in front of a packed house in SE25 or at one of the homes of the Premier League’s elite, Dann’s first taste of action since that unfortunate collision with De Bruyne would come at the home of Tooting and Mitcham FC against non-league Dulwich Hamlet. Many players may have been tempted to delay their comeback another week or so rather than play in a friendly on a chilly Thursday night against part-timers, but Dann had extra incentive to don a Palace shirt that

evening. “That game was exactly nine months to the day of the operation,” he smiled. His mission was complete. “Having been out for such a long time, it probably wasn’t the way I was picturing my first game back! But because I’d done so much work throughout the nine months, I felt ready so it didn’t really matter where it was. I played 45 minutes but just being able to put the kit and boots on again and play in a game was really enjoyable. When you get to that stage, you look back and think it was all worth it.” Under the watchful eye of the Palace medical staff, his match fitness has been carefully and strategically built up with under-23 action, culminating in a 90-minute outing against Millwall last month as his repaired knee proved it could handle the necessary stresses and strains. That allowed him to tick off the penultimate box on his road to recovery and leave just one unchecked - playing for the first-team once again. “You can’t contemplate the buzz when you get to play in a league game at Selhurst in front of the fans, so they’re the moments you crave and put all the hard work in for,” Dann admitted. “When I get to do that again, it’ll be a long time coming but it’ll definitely be thoroughly enjoyable. “Hopefully I can play a part as soon as possible. I’m hoping to be fit and available because there are a lot of games coming thick and fast, and I’ve got to the stage where after a long time I’m really looking forward to getting back involved. “All the steps I’ve taken have been to get me to this point. It’s a long rehab and it’s good to know everything has been smooth sailing, but even though I’m fit and training, until you play a first-team game it doesn’t quite bring you full-circle. Hopefully that comes along fairly soon and I can be back doing what we all love to do and be involved on a Saturday.” Should that happen in the next month, then you can be sure that the champagne corks will be popping in the Dann household on what will be much more joyous New Year’s Eve this time around.

This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.
Part 7
100 Years of the Crystal Palace Programme
1951-1957
28 PROGRAMME HISTORY
1951/52 & 1952/53
1953/54
The programme for these two seasons appear to be a step backwards from previous years as, although keeping to the same dimensions, the number of pages was reduced to 12 with advertising taking up nearly half of the production. The cover changed significantly to an outline drawing of a goalkeeper looking to catch a football that contained the price (still 3d) and was diagonally divided into either blue or red alongside white, which for the most part alternated for each home game. Meanwhile, a more-modern font was used for the club name. It opened with “Club Notes” and were followed by half a page about that day’s visitors. There was a section on the Laws of Football (later dropped) together with a football quiz, with the centre pages containing the expected team line-ups and tables for both Division Three South and the Football Combination. “Half-Time Scoreboard”, “Midweek League Fixtures” and fixtures and results for both the firstteam and reserves completed the reading material, while as the season progressed a list of the club’s top goalscorers featured.
Again there was a reduction in the number of pages - this time down to eight - but not in the price, with adverts still maintaining a sizeable contribution. The publication continued to be produced by the Andress Printing Company, this time utilising light blue paper with claret coloured print. Internally it contained a basic selection of the usual features of “Club Notes”, line-ups, tables and fixtures and results, as well as a small section for the visitors and the supporters’ club. The cover offered a drawing of a footballer, and in the top right corner an outline of the Crystal Palace, although this was dropped occasionally in favour of highlighting forthcoming floodlight friendlies. Throughout the season Palace played a number of these against attractive opposition and for these occasions a totally different eight-page programme (later reduced to four) was sold. Produced on white paper with black print, the cover cleverly showed the title “Floodlight Football” with the ‘oo’s acting as the lights over a drawing of a pitch, but inside there was little reading material apart from the line-ups.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29
1954/55
1955/56 & 1956/57
There was a return to white paper and black print for this campaign, with the cover consisting only of forthcoming fixtures at Selhurst Park. However, for the first time a club badge featured which consisted of a drawing of the Crystal Palace, a shield representing the team’s colours and the club name beneath. Threeand-a-half of the eight pages for 3d were adverts, and the remainder consisted of the regular features while “Club Notes” by the manager and team-lineups were in their usual position. Items were as the previous season but included a “Quiz Corner” where the club answered questions sent to them, and occasionally a list of injured players with their ailments, varying from tonsillitis to fluid on the knee. An early-season edition included a statement from the directors after they had received criticism from supporters for the sacking of manager Laurie Scott, while once again this campaign saw a series of Floodlight Friendlies four-page efforts, initially similar to the year before but later programmes featured “Club Notes” on the cover.
The club remained loyal to the Croydon-based Andress Printing Company at this time, who oversaw another redesign of the programme that remained at 3d for eight pages. A more professionally produced club badge appeared on the cover, once again featuring an outline of the Crystal Palace accompanied by a shield, which now incorporated dots and lines to signify the club’s colours of claret and blue more prominently. There was also an advertisement for the Frank Douglas television shop in South Norwood. The programme for the 1956/57 season opened each matchday with a profile of a Palace player which was followed by “Club Notes” written by manager Cyril Spiers, but eventually the profile was dropped in favour of an expanded manager’s notes section as the boss’ words about each game became more prevalent. The centre pages contained the two line-ups in the middle with the half-time scoreboard grid below, flanked by adverts – two of which were for local coach companies. The usual tables, fixtures, results and other statistics filled pages six and seven, and the back page promoted Philips televisions.

Gabor Kiraly
The Hungarian has donned his famous grey baggy jogging bottoms for both of today’s opponents, and aged 42 he is still going strong between the posts back in his homeland. He recently sat down with Palace TV for an in-depth look back at his career, where he discussed his time at Selhurst, shot-stopping and, of course, sweatpants.
40 GABOR KIRALY
It is remarkable to think that had it not been for a computer game, Gabor Kiraly’s cult-hero status at Selhurst Park may never have existed. Now in the 23rd year of an impressive career that has seen him become Hungary’s most capped goalkeeper, the oldest player to appear in the European Championships and play in the UEFA Champions League, he was also the first Hungarian shot-stopper in Premier League history – aided by a turn-of-the-century edition of FIFA Manager! Speaking about how he came to arrive at Palace, he said: “In Germany, everyone speaks about English football, so I thought that instead of speaking about it, I’d do it. I closed my contract with Hertha Berlin and I knew teams were interested such as Ajax, Juventus, Palace, Aston Villa, Rapid Vienna and Austria Vienna.
"I’d heard of Palace so I thought ‘why not?’. I had a very good feeling; in 2001 I played FIFA Manager and randomly I became manager of Palace, and I played a little bit of that, and then by 2004 the opportunity came to play for them! It is very funny, but real! “Palace was a huge part of my life. That team was like a family and we helped each other and were very close. Julian [Speroni] and I had a friendship and even now we still talk to each other; when I go to a Palace game I meet with him. We worked for one target – to keep a clean sheet in the game. It didn’t matter who played, we worked all week very hard to help each other. That was very important.” Kiraly played 111 times for the Eagles between 2004 and 2007, but you can’t think or talk about his exploits without mentioning one of football’s most

famous pieces of clothing– an unflattering pair of grey tracksuit bottoms. As important to the 42-year-old as his goalkeeping gloves, they still get regular use whenever Kiraly features for Hungarian top-flight team Szombathelyi Haladás. “For me, shorts are not comfortable and I prefer the longer tracksuit trousers, and that started in Hungary,” he said. “The pitches weren’t very good so I had to take longer pants. For me it was simple - they made me feel stronger and braver. I have a little bit of knee pain and I don’t want to be hit on the ground. “When I was 19-years-old we got black and grey tracksuits, and one time the washing machine was broken so I had to use the grey ones. I used them in the Hungarian championship and after eight games we didn’t lose, so I thought they brought luck so I used

them in Hungary, Germany and in England. “At Palace I let a ball go through my legs against Chelsea when I was wearing shorts and after that I said I needed the longer bottoms because maybe they’d have saved the goal.” Having turned a superstition into a signature look, the former Eagles and Burnley keeper has begun to cash in on his own line of goalkeeping chic. “When I was 40 I opened some shops and we made our own tracksuit bottoms. They’re comfortable and made of good quality textiles. However, I use the grey tracksuit trousers every day, so I never use them at home or in the street because I work in them!” Keep your eyes peeled for an in-depth interview with Kiraly from Budapest coming soon on Palace TV.

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE PARTICIPANTS 2018/19
The manager The former Chesterfield, Bristol City, Millwall, Watford and Northampton Town player got into coaching in 2007 at the Hornets before taking the top job in June 2011. Just over a year later he was appointed Burnley boss, whom he guided to Premier League promotion in 2013/14 and again in 2015/16 as champions following relegation. After finally ensuring top-flight safety, Dyche led them to a seventh-place finish last term to clinch a first taste of European football for over half a century.
Club legend Following his death back in August, the Clarets labelled McIlroy as their "greatest ever player", and it’s easy to see why. The Northern Irishman played 497 games for the Clarets between 1950 and 1962, winning the old First Division title in 1960, and then helped Burnley reach the quarter-finals of the European Cup the following season, before losing 5-4 on aggregate to Hamburg. The club's golden age continued as they finished as league and FA Cup runners-up before McIlroy moved on to Stoke City.

Having been spotted playing in New Zealand by West Bromwich Albion, Wood was loaned to Barnsley, Birmingham City, Brighton, Bristol City and Millwall before finding a permanent home at Leicester City in 2013. Things you didn't know... ABOUT BURNLEY
s r e t a W s i r Ch By
Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Burnley.
The club was founded on 15th May 1882 when the rugby club Burnley Rovers changed sport to football and became Burnley Football Club. They only played friendlies until their FA Cup debut three years later, and in 1888 became one of the founder members of the Football League. They moved into Turf Moor in 1883; only Preston North End have occupied the same ground for longer.
Alongside local rivals Preston and Wolves, the Clarets are the only side to have won all four divisions of English football. However, life in the leagues has not always been rosy, and they spent 33 years outside the top two divisions between 1976 and 2009. The nadir of that time happened in 1987 as only a last day victory over Leyton Orient prevented relegation into the Conference.
The side had a variety of nicknames in the early days, including the Turfites, the Moorites and the Royalites (as they were the first ground a member of the Royal Family had ever visited). Their eventual nickname, the Clarets, came from the colour of their kit which they switched to in 1910 to imitate the strongest team of the time, Aston Villa. Burnley won promotion the following year.

CHRIS WATERS 51
The Clarets have a rich FA Cup history, though their first campaign in the 1885/86 campaign did not go so well when they were thrashed 11-0 by Darwen Old Wanderers as, due to eligibility restrictions, they had to field a reserve team. They were the last side to win an FA Cup final at the Crystal Palace when they beat Liverpool thanks to a Burt Freeman goal, whose father had travelled from Australia to watch him play. This was the first time the trophy had been presented by a reigning monarch, George V.
Think the play-offs are a relatively new invention? At the end of the 1897/98 season, Burnley and Stoke City played out a play-off match that became known as ‘the match without a shot at goal’. Burnley needed one point to get promoted from the Second Division, while the Potters needed a draw to stay in the First Division. The game unsurprisingly ended 0-0 and the league immediately withdrew this so-called Test Match system in favour of automatic relegation and promotion.
Burnley were involved in football’s first ever match-fixing scandal, when goalkeeper Jack Hillman tried to bribe the opposition, Nottingham Forest, in the last match of the 1899/00 season, a game they needed to win to stand any chance of survival. He offered each player £2 to take it easy, and at half-time upped his offer to £5. It did little good as the Clarets lost 4-0 and were relegated. Worse was to come for Hillman as he was then suspended from football for a year by the FA.
The Clarets won their first ever league championship in the 1920/21 campaign, in spite of losing their opening three games. Their 30-match unbeaten run in 1921 stood as the longest run without defeat in league history until Arsenal bettered it when they managed a whole 38-game season without losing in 2003/04.

In each edition, we will try and form the best starting line-up possible comprised of players who have represented both the Eagles and today’s opponents, and see which club comes out on top when it comes to appearances and goals.
GK: Gabor Kiraly – CPFC 111/0 BFC 29/0 The tracksuit bottom-wearing shot-stopper is a cult hero at Palace after starring for the Eagles in the Premier League, but after his release in 2007 he spent two years at Turf Moor.
LM: John Oster – CPFC 33/4 BFC 18/1 Capped 13 times by Wales, the pacy winger spent a few months with Burnley in 2005 before arriving in SE25 three years later, netting on his debut against Hereford United.
RB: George Waterfield – CPFC 2/0 BFC 394/5 The 12th highest appearance maker in Burnley’s history received one England cap during his time at the Clarets, and he spent a short time in SE25 in 1935/36 before ending his professional career.
ATT: Gareth Taylor – CPFC 22/2 BFC 106/37 Another Welsh international, the striker struggled at Palace following his £1.25 million move from Bristol Rovers, but at Turf Moor he netted 36 goals in 95 league games.
CB: Leon Cort – CPFC 50/8 BFC 20/0 A former Palace Player of the Year in 2007, the centre-back spent two years back in his native south London before going on to play in the Premier League with the Clarets.
ATT: Ian Wright – CPFC 277/117 BFC 15/4 The Eagles legend is the club’s third-highest scorer of all-time, but ended his career at Burnley during the 1999/00 season as he helped them to promotion to Division One.
CB: Ian Cox – CPFC 18/1 BFC 131/5 Snapped up from Carshalton Athletic in 1994, Cox found opportunities limited at Selhurst Park but would excel at Burnley.
ATT: Ade Akinbiyi – CPFC 28/3 BFC 122/30 Noted at Palace for his 5+5 shirt number, Akinbiyi flopped in south London but had two decent spells at Burnley, playing his part in Premier League promotion in 2008/09.
LB: Mark Harris – CPFC 2/0 BFC 6/0 Another player unearthed from non-league by Palace, Harris played twice following his move from Wokingham Town but would eventually make his name at Swansea City in the 1990s. RM: James Carson – CPFC 54/17 BFC 6/0 The Scottish winger signed for the Glaziers in 1934 from Bradford Park Avenue but spent just two years at the club before a brief stint at Burnley, and then featured for Alloa Athletic. CM: Damien Matthew – CPFC 28/1 BFC 71/9 Matthew spent two years with both the Eagles and Clarets in the mid-1990s, featuring in the top-flight for the former, but struggled to hold down a starting spot at both.

Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that saw the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.
56 THE GLORY YEARS
1968/69
Story of the
O
Season
ctober can be a busy month for fixtures and 1968 was no different with seven crammed into 25 days, and ahead of that run the squad was bolstered by the signing of left-back John Loughlan from Morton and the versatile Roger Hoy, who crossed over London from Tottenham Hotspur. Both players made their debuts in the home fixture against Sheffield United on Saturday 5th October in a Palace side missing skipper John Sewell and the suspended Mark Lazarus. Despite the hosts taking a 24th-minute lead through Bobby Woodruff, the Blades equalised nine minutes later to claim a 1-1 draw. Four days later there was a trip to Norwich City and Lazarus celebrated his return by scoring the only goal as Palace climbed into fifth place in the Second Division table. A week later brought another away fixture, this time to a struggling Aston Villa who did not look like scoring until John McCormick conceded a penalty that was converted, however Jack Bannister, in his penultimate game for the Glaziers, equalised with a left-footed drive from a cross by Colin Taylor. The League Cup fourth round had given Palace a home tie with First Division leaders Leeds United, and Tuesday 16th October turned out to be a magical night under the lights. Bert Head’s team took an early lead when Cliff Jackson nipped in to score after Gary Sprake could only parry a Woodruff shot, but Leeds were only

missing captain Billy Bremner because of a Scotland call-up and they responded with shots that were dealt with well by John Jackson.

Seven minutes after the break it was 2-0 as a free-kick taken by Steve Kember was passed to Taylor who fired one of his ‘cannonball’ shots past Sprake from 25 yards, and despite the Whites managing a late consolation Palace marched into the next round on a memorable evening. Attentions returned to the league the following Saturday as Bristol City came to Selhurst and took the lead in the first half against an off-colour Palace. In those days of just one substitute, Head sent John Sewell on for Mel Blyth 20 minutes from time and within seconds the skipper sent over a cross for Woodruff to drive home. Six minutes later Cliff Jackson swung over a centre from the left and Lazarus was on hand to head the ball home to complete the comeback. For the second season running Palace failed to enjoy the illuminations at Blackpool as the Seasiders dealt out another defeat a week later. David Payne returned to the side after injury but it was the Tangerines’ wingmen who did the damage, and despite John Jackson being in fine form he could do nothing

about Alan Suddick’s header just before half-time, and then Blackpool added a further two goals in the last six minutes to rub salt into the wounds. The Leeds win set up a trip to face another top-flight team in Burnley on the evening of Wednesday 30th October and Head’s team selection was obviously chosen with the aim of securing a draw and forcing a replay back at Selhurst Park. Hoy replaced Woodruff who was on the bench, but this time it was a bridge too far as the Clarets netted twice in the minutes leading up to half-time, leaving Palace to return to south London and concentrate on the league.

You made your debut against Lincoln City in 1976, what was that like? I was just 17 and was told by Terry Venables that one of the lads had fallen ill, so I got a late call back when we used to travel up on the day. Not for one minute did I think I would get in the 12 selected, but as we were a bit short of attacking options I was put on the bench. We were losing the game and assistant manager Allan Harris kept prompting Terry, saying, “get him on, what have we got to lose?” and I wasn’t quite sure how to take that! I prefer to think that he thought I might turn the game for us as opposed to being the only option. It was a special moment. How did the team used to play in those days? It’s funny because the way a lot of teams set up now use tactics that Terry was implementing back then with a strong back four, one central striker with two others playing slightly wider. He allowed me to play as though I was in the playground and didn’t really involve me in too much of the tactical talk. You look at modern football and the forwards press very high as teams try and win the ball back early, and to be fair back then Terry was already looking to instil that in our gameplan. Anyone who saw me play will be surprised to hear me talk about defending!
You played with some great players in that era, who stands out 40 years on? John Burridge was a brilliant guy to have at the back, while Paul Hinshelwood, Kenny Sansom, Billy Gilbert and Jim Cannon were a great back four, and it was a great plus that they didn’t have to miss too many games through injury. In midfield we had Steve Kember and Peter Nicholas protecting them and then up front you had me, Ian Walsh and David Swindlehurst. Unfortunately Mike Elwiss got an injury during that season which gave Walshie his chance, and it’s one he took and the rest is history.

THE GLORY YEARS 59
You were named the fans’ Player of the Year in 1979, that must have meant a lot? I don’t want to come across as not appreciative but I always say that even though I played a big part in our success, there were certainly other players who didn’t get enough recognition. People like Jerry Murphy and Nico were the key players for me that season. Nico was a bit of a midfield enforcer and if it wasn’t for Jerry I don’t think I would have touched the ball many times! Whenever he got the ball he looked for a pass to me, wherever I was on the field. How did you find the fan interaction in those days? You had as much chance to meet the fans on an away day on the train as you had of bumping into them at a home match. In those days it was the norm and I don’t think it was a bad thing for the fans to meet up with us all, as it cost a lot of money to go and see the team play.

Back then there were chances for players to be criticised in the heat of the moment, but those fans knew all the lads had given 100%. Palace fans have the reputation, and quite rightly so, of being up there as the best. They are always great to me and the club has been a big part of my life.

overs might have won the day, but it was the terrace fans who were the real winners as Palace and Blackburn served up a genuine Lancashire hot-pot at a rain-soaked Ewood Park. No matter which side of the fence you stood, you had to admire the fire and commitment of both teams as the drama swung from end to end in this amazing nine-goal Second Division thriller. But it was certainly not a game for the coaches, with both defences leaking in alarming fashion on a surface made treacherous by continuous drizzle. Such was the defensive uncertainty that when Rovers’ giant keeper Terry Gennoe stepped in to separate a fuming Steve Coppell from referee Joe Timmons at the final whistle, it was practically the first thing he’d stopped all afternoon! The incident which sparked that outburst from the usually controlled Palace manager was a mystifying penalty award by the Newcastle official in the 67th minute. With Palace having built a seemingly unassailable 3-1 lead, Rovers’ winger Scott Sellars dribbled his way into the box, but appeared to have lost the ball before running into the stationary Gary O’Reilly somewhere around the penalty area ‘D’. Referee Timmons pointed immediately to the spot, to the bewilderment of the visitors, and Howard Gayle joyously accepted the gift, thumping the penalty kick past the despairing Brian Parkin.
From then on the boot was largely on the other foot. Within four minutes the scores were level when Rovers’ striker Simon Garner ran on to Gayle’s searching through ball to slot home. And next minute the Lancashire side had incredibly regained their earlier lead. Garner was the scorer again, this time converting Hendry’s headed pass. PALACE

THE GLORY YEARS 61
Less than a minute into the second half Neil Redfearn carved an opening on the right and sent in a low cross which Ian Wright buried into the net. Not to be outdone, twin striker Mark Bright was the next to find the target, heading home from six yards after Redfearn’s left wing corner. Never a dirty game, it nevertheless yielded five bookings, with Palace men Hopkins, O’Reilly, Pardew and Wright joining Rovers’ David Mail in referee Timmons’ book. Blackburn: Gennoe, Atkins, Millar, Ainscow, Hendry, Miller, Gayle, Reid, Kennedy, Garner, Sellars. Palace: Parkin, Pemberton, Burke, Pardew, Hopkins, O’Reilly, Redfearn, Thomas, Bright, Wright, Barber (Salako). Sub: Hone (not used).
Palace refused to fold and, with 11 minutes left penalty ‘victim’ O’Reilly seemed to have restored some equilibrium when he rose unchallenged to head home John Pemberton’s accurate free-kick. And the visitors might even have clinched it had a delicate chip by Mark Bright crept the right side of the post rather than curling just wide. But with under 30 seconds to go, Rovers completed a stirring comeback when Colin Hendry steered home a low shot from full-back Mark Atkins’ through ball. Much earlier – in fact, only three minutes into the game – things had begun to look bleak for Palace when Gayle raced on to an Atkins throw to slam home a dipping drive. However, the Londoners had other ideas, and when Jeff Hopkins’ long free-kick fell into the path of skipper Geoff Thomas, he despatched it with minimum fuss to send the sides in level at half-time. PRUDENTIAL RIDELONDON Last year, 20 Palace fans donned the famous red and blue stripes to take on the 100-mile challenge of the Prudential RideLondon cycle ride. The team raised a fantastic £12,000 to support our work with vulnerable young people in south London, and we are now looking for keen cyclists to take part in August 2019. We caught up with one of last year’s riders, Andrew Johnson (not that one), to find out more about it. How long have you been a Palace fan? My grandfather took me to my first game on the 25th September 1976 when we beat Mansfield Town 2-0. From then on I was hooked! Why did you decide to ride for Palace for Life Foundation? I have completed the London Marathon a couple of times and over 50 half-marathons, including the Great North Run. As a season ticket holder it made sense to do something for the Foundation so I did the Marathon March last year, and being the adventurous type I thought I’d give cycling a go. From now on I’ll donate all of my fundraising to Palace for Life Foundation - it’s such a great cause. Can you describe the experience of taking part in RideLondon? I absolutely loved it, even though it rained and there was lots of it! What was it like to wear the Palace kit on the day? It was brilliant as we got lots of respect from fellow cyclists and fans. There’s nothing like cycling down Dorking High Street to a chorus of “Eagles”! The team photos at the end were brilliant too.

What was your highlight? The whole day was very special, but cycling down The Mall flat out to the finish was the best moment of all. What advice would you give to someone thinking of taking part next year? The harder you train, the more you will get from the day and when you get there, enjoy it. Take at least two inner tube spares and a repair kit, because it is odds-on you will get at least one puncture even with puncture resistant tyres - especially if you are in the wet! Interested in taking part? Visit palaceforlife.org or email fundraising@palaceforlife.org.

A few new additions this summer have shaken things up. The changing room atmosphere is great and the team are quite bubbly. In a good way, it’s different now to how it has been over the past few seasons as there’s a mix of new characters and those that have known each other for years. The music has changed dramatically though; I’ve retired from being the DJ and now some of the songs have become a bit suspect! I joined Palace to play at a competitive standard after giving birth to my son. When I had Shay I went to a little Sunday League team but the level just wasn’t good enough, and that’s why I joined Palace. Now, as we’ve progressed up the divisions, we’ve had more success and that’s given me the opportunity to see greater professionalism and get closer to where the men are at. It’s been nice to be a part of that progression, but we always want to do better. Shay loves all the players, but wants to be their mascot all the time now! He is six-years-old and has been a mascot for both the men’s team and the ladies already. It’s wonderful seeing him do it but now he just expects it all the time; he’ll say before the games: “can I be a mascot, can I be a mascot?” He likes to walk out with Megen Lynch because he wants to be a goalkeeper and she’s his favourite ladies player. From the men’s team, his favourite players are Julian Speroni and Wilfried Zaha.

We need more confidence before we progress in the league. In training we do really, really well, but sometimes in games we lack a bit of belief. We know we’re capable but I think maybe being in a new league makes things difficult. We’ve got a great fanbase and the support has been unreal; people around the club want to know how things are going and they’ll come down to find out. The support has been fantastic and it’s good to see that we’re being backed. I work for the Palace for Life Foundation and love seeing the kids enjoy football. I go to schools and try to encourage girls to play football, and put on sessions after school or during lunchtime - I love it. We’ve been giving them discounted tickets to our games recently, so it’s nice to coach them on a Tuesday night and then on a Sunday they’ll be at our games. I’ll go back in the next week and they’ll say: “Miss, I was at one of your games and it was really good!” We need to keep pushing for people to come and watch us. We need more of a fanbase, not just at Palace games but women’s football in general. We can then progress to the highest level that we want. Loads of girls at the schools I work with have never been to a match but they like football. We need to encourage them through the gate so they can see they’ve got the opportunity to have this as a professional career and, of course, just enjoy watching football.
MAKE SPORT EVERYONE’S GAME.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1 Saturday 10th November 2018
Palace’s wait for a home win this season continued as Juan Foyth’s goal midway through the second half handed Tottenham Hotspur victory at Selhurst Park. A quiet encounter saw the teams go into the break goalless after a half that was as bleak as the weather, but eight minutes after play resumed the hosts had a great chance to take the lead when James Tomkins met a Luka Milivojevic corner at the back post but couldn’t direct his header towards the target. However, in keeping with the game, Spurs took

the lead in scrappy fashion on 66 minutes. Erik Lamela sent a corner into the box and Harry Kane saw a header blocked, but with the ball up for grabs everyone hesitated except Foyth, who buried a free header. With a lead to protect, Hugo Lloris would be the busier in the final stages when he saved from Jeffrey Schlupp and Andros Townsend, but in stoppage-time the ball broke for Alexander Sørloth to tuck home but he shot straight at the Frenchman and Palace’s hopes of a point disappeared.

For the first time since 1989, Palace took a point away from Old Trafford after a game in which they were probably good for all three. The better of the chances would fall to Roy Hodgson’s team throughout the encounter and Wilfried Zaha nearly made his former club pay when he drilled just wide, and 10 minutes before the break he instigated a counter-attack that led to an excellent opportunity for the unmarked Patrick van Aanholt to fire home, but he miscued. There were tight offside calls either side of half-time

as Cheikhou Kouyaté had a goal ruled out minutes before the break when he connected with a Luka Milivojevic free-kick, and then Romelu Lukaku was left frustrated by the flag when he turned in the ball from close range after Wayne Hennessey had parried an Ashley Young blast. There would be one more huge chance for both teams and Andros Townsend nearly capped a brilliant solo run with a goal but curled wide of the mark, before Hennessey secured the point when he tipped a Lukaku header to safety.
