SOMETIMES MORE CAN BE GAINED FROM A GRITTY ENCOUNTER THAT BATTLEHARDENS THE TEAM AND BOOSTS THEIR SPIRIT, ESPECIALLY AROUND THIS IMPORTANT TIME OF THE YEAR
THE MANAGER 05
I can look back with pride I hope everyone inside Selhurst Park has had an enjoyable Christmas, and that you’re filled with festive cheer ahead of our traditional Boxing Day fixture today. This is always an exciting time to be a football fan with so many games packed into the schedule, but it also means that due to print deadlines I am unable to reflect on last week’s trip to Manchester City. However, I can look back with pride on our last fixture here in SE25 which saw us beat Leicester City. It was our second successive home win, but it came in stark contrast to the attacking prowess that led us to the relatively comfortable victory against Burnley to kick-start the month. Against Leicester we had to dig deep, and I was delighted to see us show that element of our game. Those kind of victories bring just as much satisfaction because although it is wonderful to see us boss a game and pepper the opposition’s goal with shots, sometimes more can be gained from a gritty encounter that battlehardens the team and boosts their spirit, especially around this important time of the year. I said before the game there would be an opportunity for players to step up and give me some selection headaches, and I have to praise a couple of unsung heroes for keeping our sheet clean for the sixth time in the league this season. Martin Kelly replaced the suspended James Tomkins and performed magnificently in the heart of defence, while Vicente Guaita played very well on his Premier League debut which came at late notice due to Wayne’s injury. We’re going to need other players who are prepared to step up to the plate over the next few

matches because the demands of the Christmas period take their toll. However, that is the case for every team in the division and our opponents Cardiff City will have to face many of the same issues. On that note, I would like to welcome Neil Warnock, his players, staff and Bluebirds supporters to south London this afternoon. I have been impressed with the way they have adapted to life back in the top-flight and have picked up some good results over the past few weeks, so it’ll be a tough match for sure. However, it is one against a team that are around us in the table so it’s an important one too as it gives us the chance to find some breathing space in our quest to move away from the relegation zone as soon as possible. Therefore, I hope that everyone here today backs the team as vocally as you have been doing over the past couple of matches in particular. It is easy to be loud and proud when things are going well like they did against Burnley, but the noisy encouragement you gave the team against Leicester genuinely helped boost the players as they saw out the final minutes. Please repeat that again today, and hopefully we can hand you a belated Christmas present of three precious points! Enjoy the game!
THIS IS JUST MY SECOND TIME PLAYING IN ENGLAND DURING CHRISTMAS, AND LAST YEAR I FOUND IT TO BE THE HARDEST THING IN MY CAREER
THE CAPTAIN 07
we will make sure we are ready Last time we were here at Selhurst, we managed to get a fantastic result against Leicester City which was great after suffering two defeats, and we deserved it.
We haven’t had a lot of luck in many games this season but we had that in the second half, and Vicente produced an amazing save to win the game. As well as him, all the players showed great character and attitude and so I was proud of the boys. It was the same score at half-time against West Ham United but this time we managed to keep the score at 1-0 right until the end. I was pleased that my goal brought us the three points. When the ball came to me, I saw the space and the goal so in my head I decided how I wanted to shoot, and thank God I scored. It is 100% my best goal for Palace, but I scored one very beautiful goal for Red Star Belgrade in a derby against Partizan and another for Olympiakos, so I would say the Leicester goal would be in my top three. This is just my second time playing in England during Christmas, and last year I found it to be the hardest thing in my career. Last year we played on the 31st December and we had just one day to recover before the next game, but thankfully this year is easier as we have two days! It’s not easy to be fully fit because it is a period of celebration and there are lots of opportunities to spend time with families with a lot of food, but we are paid to be professional; we have to play games and give everything for the team, so we will make sure we are ready. It is not just hard for me; it is hard for every

player. Before I moved to Palace I was used to having a winter break, but I prefer to play now than finish the season later. This league is the most watched in the world and so playing at this time of the year is a big benefit in terms of marketing, but if you win games around this time of the year it helps put everyone in a very good mood. We will try to do that against Cardiff City this afternoon. It will be an important game because they are a direct rival of ours as we are close in the table, but we are at home and we have lots of confidence from our recent home games. It is great that we’re starting to make Selhurst a fortress again after winning against Burnley and Leicester, and the best feeling is when you win at home because we have great fans. Last season we were very strong at home, but that wasn’t the case at the start of this year. However, the last two victories were very important for us so we will try and win again to put us in the best place before January arrives. Make some noise!
08 THE CHAIRMAN
PROGRESS ON AND OFF THE PITCH Welcome to the supporters, staff and players of Cardiff City to Selhurst Park, and to each and every Palace fan. I hope you all had a magnificent Christmas Day, and are raring to go today.
As the year draws to a close, today’s notes will reflect upon 2018, and for the Chelsea game I will outline some of our plans for 2019. When you look back it’s incredible the amount that can be packed into a year. I think that we have made great progress in many areas, starting with achieving our record-breaking sixth season in the Premier League. We began 2018 with a bang by beating Southampton away, starting a rollercoaster few months but we would go on to finish 11th thanks to some magnificent wins over Leicester and Brighton in particular, with only goal difference keeping us from a top-10 finish while our last six games yielded 14 points, placing us at the very top of the form table. It was quite a turnaround, and credit must go to Roy, his staff and the players for that fantastic finish. Your support never wavered too, as always. During the summer, we bade farewell to some magnificent club servants in Damien, Yohan, Chungy and Bakary. Ruben and Timothy returned to their clubs too after doing a great job for us on loan. The World Cup summer where football nearly came home went by in a flash, during which we signed some able replacements in Vicente, Max, Cheikhou and Jordan, all of whom have settled in well. Meanwhile, Roy, Wilf, James, Wayne, Aaron, Julian and several young players were all rewarded with new deals. This season so far has been full of great team performances, but they haven't translated into the

points we think we deserve... yet! The away wins at Fulham and Huddersfield were excellent; the draws with Arsenal and Manchester United magnificent and the outstanding win over Burnley and gritty defeat of Leicester were special days here at Selhurst Park. I have total faith in Roy and the players to secure some much-needed results in the coming months. There is no reason why we can’t emulate our finish last season and rapidly climb the table. Elsewhere, our under-23s and under-18s won their respective leagues which were brilliant achievements for our academy. Aaron’s progress through the ranks has been something to celebrate, but he’s not the only one to force his way into Roy’s plans. Sam Woods and Ryan Inniss made their first-team debuts, while James Daly, Nya Kirby and Giovanni McGregor have made the bench this year. It is an exciting time to be a young player in our academy. We secured planning permission for a gamechanging 14,000+ seat Main Stand, something that’s eluded the club for years, and signed a long-term lease on our academy site so we can now invest and begin to make it something we can all be proud of.

Our Ladies were granted a place in the Women’s Championship, which has been a big step-up with results hard to come by but I expect them to show the typical Palace spirit, dig in and avoid relegation. I’d urge you all to get down to a game and support them in the new year. That’s not bad going in a year, although the planning and groundwork for these things has taken a lot longer. I’d like to thank my partners and all my staff here at the club for their work in achieving such positive progress, and of course all of you for your continued, loyal and passionate support of our football club. We really appreciate it. As for today, no-one needs reminding how important this match is. Let’s pull together and get behind Roy’s team. Up The Palace!
10 TODAY'S GAME
Crystal Palace v Cardiff City // Wednesday 26th December // Selhurst Park
Today's game Neil Warnock makes his first return to Selhurst Park in exactly four years when his second spell as Eagles boss ended following a 3-1 defeat to Southampton. Since then he has managed Queens Park Rangers and Rotherham United before transforming the fortunes of Cardiff City following his arrival in October 2016, whom he led to Premier League promotion; the recordbreaking eighth of his career. The Welsh team were tipped to struggle in their new surroundings, but they displayed the fighting qualities typified by their manager in November and December to win three straight matches at home to see off Brighton, Wolves and Southampton and lift them away from the dreaded drop-zone. However Warnock’s team have found things tougher on their travels and are winless in their last nine league away games, conceding 25 goals in that run. Palace meanwhile are aiming to clinch a thirdstraight home victory for the first time since May, when wins over Brighton, Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion secured an 11th-place finish. The sides haven’t met since the 2013/14 campaign when the Eagles did the double over Cardiff, whose last win against Palace came exactly six years ago on Boxing Day 2012 when Aron Gunnarsson netted the winner in Championship action.
Luka Milivojevic has scored more Premier League goals for Palace than any other player since his debut in the division back in February 2017.

Newsroom PALACE SPREAD FESTIVE CHEER Members of the Eagles first-team and the Palace Ladies squad recently visited Croydon University Hospital for their annual trip to spread some Christmas cheer. Scott Dann, Patrick van Aanholt, Ciara Watling and Freya Holdaway were on hand to dish out presents and chat to patients young and old, including in the children’s unit and the elderly care wards, as well as those member of staff on hand to help treat those who may be spending the holidays away from home. “We do everything we can to make sure that the patients that are here have a Christmas”, said Matthew Kershaw, Interim Chief Executive of Croydon Health Services. “A lot of our staff are working right through Christmas and the new year away from their families and friends, so we try and make sure we look after them as well. “The Palace players coming down is an example of us trying to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to the patients. They were really touched by it, and it's a great bonus for the staff as well as we have some Palace supporters here. "I know Palace give back to the community all year, but it’s particularly gratefully received over Christmas."
MANCHESTER UNITED GAME MOVED Due to Manchester United’s game against Liverpool being switched, Palace’s home game against the Red Devils has subsequently been moved back 24 hours and will now take place on Wednesday 27th February, with an 8pm kick-off. Last season’s encounter saw a 3-2 thriller in SE25 as Nemanja Matic netted in stoppage-time to deny Palace a point in a game that saw them go 2-0 up, but much has changed since then with Jose Mourinho departing Old Trafford earlier this month and Ole Gunner Solskjaer put in caretaker charge for the remainder of the season. Tickets are on sale now at Category A prices, with season ticket holders and paid members with 100+ loyalty points being able to book up to two tickets each. They can be purchased at tickets.cpfc.co.uk, over the phone on 08712 000 071 or in person from the box office.

James With a one-year-old becoming captured by the magic of this time of the year, James Tomkins is trying to ensure that both his son and the Palace fans have a Christmas to remember. Here he speaks to Ben Mountain about how he juggles the demands of the holiday season with the football season.
JAMES TOMKINS
As parts of the country put themselves on hold for a special day or two, Christmas is a vastly different time for footballers. An avalanche of matches and the traditional Boxing Day fixture means that players up and down the country will have to glumly watch on as their families tuck into the turkey dinner, all the trimmings and mince pies galore, and then retreat early to their own bed or, even worse, travel the length of the country to end the most magical day of the year holed up in a hotel room. However, James Tomkins is a firm believer that some joy can be gleaned from Christmas Day despite the demands of being a professional footballer, and just a single afternoon away from the training pitches with his family can make all the difference. “We train normally in the mornings and get the afternoon off,” he explained. “It’s nice to have some family time but knowing we’ve got a game the next day, it used to be hard to keep your mind off the match. “Now I’ve got a little boy, it’s a bit different. It’s massively important to have that family time and I want to make Christmas special for my little man, especially with him growing up and so Christmas is becoming even more important to me as a result. He’s just old enough for Christmas but he’s not really too aware of what’s going on - he’s more interested in the wrapping paper than anything! I might have to start dressing up as Santa soon, especially as he gets older..." And as for that traditional Christmas lunch? “I think it’s important not to get stupidly strict. I like to have a bit of Christmas dinner but not go mad. I’ve cut down and don’t eat as much now as I used to and obviously drinking is gone. You don’t do that now and that’s important. You need a good night’s sleep as well with an important game the next day.” That might be difficult for any parent in the excitable presence of a youngster experiencing their first Christmas, but as a footballer the most wonderful time of the year is even busier for Tomkins with the added pressure of four games in just 12 days. Having allowed himself to briefly lend his focus towards a
18 JAMES TOMKINS
family-orientated festive period, Tomkins’ attentions swiftly return to matters on the pitch and the challenges of the hectic fixture list. “It’s obviously demanding but everyone knows it’s when you can climb up the table,” he said. “Games come thick and fast so if you pick up a couple of backto-back wins it’s massive. It can shoot you right up the table. We’re looking for that over this Christmas period.” Born in Essex but raised on the pitches of east London, Tomkins’ newly-adopted quarter of London has become more than just host to his current employers. Despite having spent the majority of his life in the eastern quadrant of the capital, in just two years its southern counterpart has become home for both him and his family, especially given the recent addition to the Tomkins household. The 29-year-old defender has never settled away from England’s capital. It’s where he spent life growing up, first developed his game and eventually realised his ambitions of making it as a professional. For a young lad growing up in Basildon, the thought of regular football in the dizzying heights of the Premier League must have been a dream beyond imagination but it was one he would strive to achieve. As his career has wound on, he would progress through West Ham United’s youth ranks, the team he supported as a youngster, to eventually captain the club, win the Championship play-offs, be included in the 2011/12 Championship Team of the Year, rack up over 320 games of professional football and feature in the UEFA Europa League. His switch from the Hammers to Palace marked the first permanent transfer of his career over two years
ago in July 2016. But despite the short space of time and a meagre 16-mile hop across the capital having spent 19 years with his boyhood team things have completely changed for Tomkins. “My game’s come a long way since I left West Ham,” he reflected. “Getting gametime was so important for me and that’s why I left but now I’m really enjoying my time here at Palace and long may that continue. In the most part, my performances have been pleasing. I’ve done well.” One strength the Palace squad can be sure of is a solid backline, led, of course, by Tomkins and his fellow centre-back Mamadou Sakho. The partnership helped the Eagles avoid the drop last term and went unbeaten in their first 14 matches together to turn into quite the dynamic duo, catching the eye of those far outside of SE25. But it’s not just Sakho who Tomkins lines up beside. “The partnership between myself and Mama is good,” he said. “I think it’s important that we continue to work together. Playing with the same back four and keeper is so important for consistency but I’m playing alongside not just Mama but Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] too, and seeing the footballer that he’s been turning into recently is pleasing. “For Aaron, he was a winger previously but he’s turned into a great defender now so you’d never know he was a winger because of how well he can defend. It’s been pleasing because he’s maturing as a man and as a player so it’s nice to play alongside him. “If I can give him any experience and advice then I will. I try and talk to him every now and then on the pitch but I think it’s important for younger players not

to be told too much. I remember when I was breaking through, I wanted to learn some of it myself first-hand and didn’t want to be told every two seconds by a teammate. I try and tell him little bits, but only every now and then. "Having said that, keeping a check on attacking full-backs is a nightmare, especially trying to get them back to defend! I think the thing is Aaron and Pat [Van Aanholt], as anyone can see for themselves, have a natural ability going forward." While the Palace man may have only played permanently for two London clubs, he has also performed in a somewhat rarelyworn shirt that also brought plenty of pride to England’s capital: that of Team GB. Tomkins lined up alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Rose in 2012 as the country's Olympic football team reached the tournament’s quarter-final stages on home soil, only to lose narrowly to South Korea on penalties. Given that few Englishmen have taken to the pitch to play in the Olympics, Tomkins revealed a little about what the experience was like and how he felt during that famous summer six years ago. Looking back, he recalled, “Playing for Team GB, leading up to the start of the Games and being a part of the opening ceremony was obviously an experience I’d never had before, and it was brilliant. I didn’t play too much, and I’d have liked to have played more, but I’ve got those memories now to remember forever and it was a great experience. “The teams we played against had players in them that we were familiar with, but you only need to
win a couple of games to get into the semi-finals and we expected to go far because we had experienced Premier League players. Sadly, that wasn't the case but tournament football is very different to anything else.” Following the Olympics’ conclusion, Tomkins remained in east London for four more years with West Ham which would see him turn down the opportunity to play in the stadium that held the Games in favour of a switch to Palace where he has quickly become a key member of the dressing room. During a typical summer, one not spent vying for gold, silver or bronze, the centre-back revealed what he gets up to in his spare time. “When I leave work, I spend my time with the family. Typically, I just like to relax and spend time with them, but I am a summer weather player of golf. I’m not too good at it mind you! “Me and the lads play together sometimes and we had a little round a while back. Some of them are quite a bit better than me to be fair, though I reckon they spend more time on the courses than I do! Ian the masseur is the best, but player-wise it has to be Macca. Luckily, he’s my partner! He plays well and carries me a little bit.” When he’s spending time on the lush green turf of Selhurst rather than the fairways, it’s clear to all in SE25 that Tomkins is not carried by anyone. The achievement may seem simple, but for a man who had spent so long in just one place, to speedily capture the support and attention in another small corner of the world is easier said than done. Today, let’s hope for two things: three points earned by Tomkins and his side and, of course, that Master Tomkins enjoyed just his second Christmas.

It was actually a Tottenham kit which is really random! I don’t remember wearing it but I saw a photo of me in it in the family album from when I was five or six.
I was number 16 and the shirt was very baggy! It was back in 2010 and it had GAC on the front, but it was massive!
The one I wore when we beat Brighton away in the play-offs. It’s hung up in my house next to a painting of me celebrating. When you go up my stairs, it’s the first thing you see!

This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

PA announcer John Henty was afforded more space for his topical ‘Viewpoints’ and a small cartoon helped highlight the match officials. Full match summaries of previous games were presented as were details of travel to the next away game, including ticket prices. Another small cartoon accompanied the Supporters’ Club section, with tables, fixtures and results completing the excellent production.
1969/70
1968/69 Because of the inclusion of an additional magazine titled The Football League Review as a supplement, the size of the programme had to be increased to 8.5” x 5.5” and the pagination to 20 pages, although the price doubled to 1/- (5p). Despite this, it was good value for money and the best programme the club had produced for 30 years. A rather bland cover gave no indication of the date, opponents or price but the contents opened with ‘From The Manager’s Chair’ by Bert Head. Four pages were then afforded to the visitors that incorporated special features on their manager and one player as a change from the usual pen pictures. The centre pages again contained the line-ups surrounded by local adverts and upcoming fixtures at Selhurst Park.
An iconic programme cover heralded Palace’s first-ever season in the First Division, which had been designed by a supporter and chosen by the club in a competition, while the inside once again included The Football League Review. With no advertisements there was plenty of reading material, starting with 'As I See It' by the manager opposite details of admission prices for the season (seats £1 and terraces 5/- (25p). The visitors were again afforded a large section, which was usually followed by ‘Peskett’s Page’ penned by journalist and Glaziers supporter Roy Peskett, or a profile on one or two Palace players. Some editions contained ‘Press On Palace’ a summary including photographs of press reports on recent games, and programme editor Doug Organ had

a page or two answering fans’ letters to the club, plus each edition also contained a ‘Fan Of The Week’ feature. Match summaries also appeared occasionally and from November onwards the team line-ups appeared on the back page with ‘Supporters’ Club News’ moving inside. Away travel details and fixtures and results made up the rest of the edition.
1970/71 A complete change took place in the size of the programme for this one season only as it was produced to tuck into the inside pocket of a coat, measuring an upright 8” x 4” (20cms x 10cms) but this innovative design was offset by the inclusion, albeit loose, of The Football League Review. Photographs of previous games appeared throughout, but the cover reverted disappointingly to a plain design and nowhere was the price displayed, thought to still be 1/- (5p). The content spanned 28 pages with the majority of features kept from the previous season, but the visitors’ section took up three pages including a team photo, with line-ups appearing on the back page. New items were ‘Female Forum’, which carried pen pictures of two of the Palace Dollies, a Palace player would ‘Air His Views’ and there were details of the match referee. Fixtures and results for the first-team were shown horizontally across two pages in a new format, similar to those used these days. Tables and match summaries that included the reserves and juniors also featured.
PALACE
v
CARDIFF CITY
1971/72 The programme was changed in the summer to have an almost square look about it, and for the whole campaign the cover portrayed a drawing of a goalkeeper diving to save a ball that appeared in the top left corner. Arriving in the age of decimalisation, the 16 pages cost 6p and the printers were now Ward & Woolverton. The first inside page consisted usually of an action photo and was followed by manager Bert Head with his ‘As I See It’. Up to a five-page section was devoted to the opponents and a picture of Steve Kember and an opponent formed the background to this part, despite the fact that Kember departed that September. Throughout the season a player was portrayed in each edition in ‘Palace Stars’. General club news, and that for the Supporters Club, filled two pages and was followed by fixtures and results at three playing levels, along with match summaries. Line-ups were to be found in their usual place at the back along with a numerical token, to be used in a ballot for a FA Cup final ticket.

PALACE’S BEST
Boxing Day ENCOUNTERS
Perhaps the most traditional day in the football calendar is Boxing Day, and there have been many memorable moments in the club’s history that have occurred on this particular day. Palace have taken to the field on 82 occasions on the 26th December and won 32 times, and while you may be full of festive food already, Ian King selects five of the very best to get stuck into.
40 BOXING DAY
Palace 5 Brentford 1 1930 // Third Division South On Christmas Day morning, Palace suffered an 8-2 defeat at the hands of Brentford, but the following day saw the return fixture played; a common occurrence in those days. The Glaziers were eager for revenge and netted after just 30 seconds through George Clarke [pictured], and straight from the restart Peter Simpson secured possession and his deflected shot doubled the lead after two minutes. It was 3-1 at half-time before Albert Harry drove home a Bobby Greener free-kick, and just before the end Clarke completed the scoring when he was able to shoot on the run from close range.
Palace account by rounding the keeper, and two minutes from time Allen netted a spot-kick [below] to complete the scoring in the final game before the famous ‘big freeze’ that would affect the football calendar for the next three months.
Palace 3 Southampton 0 1972 // First Division Having netted five goals his previous seven games, Don Rogers was in red-hot form by the time Southampton came to town, who soon found themselves behind on 18 minutes when John Craven opened the scoring. Things stayed that way until 20 minutes from time when Rogers swerved past the keeper’s desperate attempt to get the ball and shot into the far corner from a tight angle, and two minutes from time he repeated the trick with Alan Pinkney supplying the pass to register the club’s best top-flight Boxing Day result.
Palace 3 Millwall 0 1962 // Third Division Caretaker boss Dick Graham bolstered his striking options by bringing in Dickie Dowsett and Cliff Holton, whose debut was in this derby against Millwall. On a frozen surface, Palace took the lead in the 18th minute through Peter Burridge against his former club. The second arrived after half-time when a Ronnie Allen through-ball found Dowsett who opened his

BOXING DAY 41
Palace 3 Norwich city 1 2008 // Championship Promotion-chasing Palace boosted their chances at Norwich City’s expense, and once again they wasted little time in making a statement when just six minutes in Paddy McCarthy flicked on for his defensive partner José Fonte to nod home. However the lead was short lived as City equalised 12 minutes later in similar fashion through Gary Doherty, but Fonte completed his brace on 31 minutes by smashing home a loose ball. It was left to another defender to seal the points when substitute Danny Butterfield fired in a 20-yard thunderbolt.
aston villa 0 Palace 1 2013 // Premier League Desperate for points, Tony Pulis’ Palace kept things tight in a quiet first half with Jason Puncheon’s scuffed a shot and a Julian Speroni save from Andreas Weimann the main pieces of action. With 20 minutes left Pulis introduced Dwight Gayle, and it produced dividends in stoppage-time when the Eagles countered a Villa corner. Dean Moxey found the striker 70 yards from goal who strode away, turned inside the only Villa outfield player he encountered and curled a fine shot into the top corner to take the Eagles out of the relegation zone.

AUTOMATIC PROMOTION WINNERS 2017/18
The manager A man who needs no introduction to Eagles supporters, the City manager has spent two stints in the Palace dugout, taking them into the play-offs in 2008 and having a short spell in charge in 2014. After winning an eighth promotion as a manager last season at the Bluebirds, he broke the record for the most achieved in England’s professional leagues. His managerial career started in 1980 at Gainsborough Trinity and he has notably enjoyed success at Notts County, Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers.
Club legend The Zambian-born hotshot came through the ranks at Cardiff to become a key player as they climbed from the fourth tier to the second, including netting a club record 35 goals in a campaign in 2002/03 as the Bluebirds won promotion to Division One. After 30 goals at that level the following season, he moved into the top-flight for the first time with West Bromwich Albion but returned to the Welsh capital in 2011 for a couple of seasons, ending his association with Cardiff with a record of 109 goals in 227 matches.

Having been signed as a defender, Neil Warnock has gradually pushed Paterson further forward and now he is spearheading the Bluebirds’ attack. He began as a right-back at Hearts, helping them return to the Scottish Premiership in 2015 and won the club’s Young Player of the Year award the following season. That was a feat he replicated in south Wales the next year as his 10 goals from midfield saw him finish as top scorer as Premier League promotion was clinched. CCFC Games: 51 CCFC Goals: 14

Things you didn't know... ABOUT CARDIFF CITY
s r e t a W s i r Ch By
Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Cardiff City.
The club was formed in 1899 by Bartley Wilson as Riverside FC. When King Edward VII granted city status on Cardiff six years later, Wilson applied to change the team’s name to Cardiff City, but this was rejected as it was deemed that the league in which they were playing was too minor. With a switch to the South Wales Amateur League, the new name was granted in 1907.
Mystery surrounds City’s nickname the Bluebirds, with no-one knowing for sure how it exactly came about. One popular theory is that it is linked to a children’s play called The Blue Bird, written by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck, which received rave reviews when it was performed in Cardiff in 1911. The writer received the Noble Prize for Literature a week later.
The Bluebirds were involved in one of the tightest ever First Division title races in 1923/24 when they lost out to Huddersfield Town on goal average by 0.024 of a goal. In the final round of fixtures, Huddersfield won their game, meaning Cardiff needed to beat Birmingham City. At 0-0, Cardiff were awarded a penalty but record goalscorer Len Davies missed and the club lost out on the title.

CHRIS WATERS 51
Cardiff’s FA Cup final triumph over Arsenal in 1927 is remembered for the Gunners goalkeeper Dan Lewis allowing a tame shot to roll out of his grasp and then inadvertently elbowed the ball into the net. The Welshman blamed his brand-new jersey, saying that the wool was too greasy for him to grip the ball properly. According to Arsenal club legend, no Gunners custodian has played in an FA Cup final since with a new jersey.
Winning the Welsh Cup regularly gave City an avenue into European competition, even as a struggling Second Division side. In 1967 the team went on a remarkable run to the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners Cup where they were pipped by Hamburg, and four years later they made the quarter-finals where they met Real Madrid. The 1-0 first leg win in Wales is one of the most famous victories in the club’s history, though they lost the second leg 2-0.
When Wolverhampton Wanderers decided to ban Cardiff fans from Molineux in the 2006/07 campaign, some supporters came up with a clever way of still getting to see the match. Cardiff fan Steve Day hired a small airship to give around 20 Bluebirds a bird’s eye view, but unfortunately, due to high winds the airship couldn’t take off and Day’s innovative plan was scuppered.
There are many myths about the origin of the Ayatollah celebration unique to Cardiff fans, ranging from it being based on an ancient Celtic ritual to it being out of respect for a mad fan from days of yore. The most likely origin is that it was used by fans of the Welsh language punk group U Thant, and was imitated on the terraces in a game at Lincoln City in 1990 the day after one of the band’s gigs.

Woodruff How did you initially come to arrive at Palace back in 1966? Bert Head was at Swindon Town when I was a youngster and he gave me my chance at just 17 years of age and really looked after me as my manager in those early days. When the opportunity came along for me to move on he sold me to Wolves, but when things didn’t work out so well during my third season up there, he was on the phone to give me the opportunity of moving to Crystal Palace and I certainly didn’t wait long to take him up on that chance. Having been at the club for a few seasons beforehand, did you think we would challenge for promotion heading in 1968/69? In the two previous seasons we had been in there with a real chance. However after Bert Head made a few signings, we were ready for a challenge. We had individuals who would play a major role in our success that season. Palace fans of that era will not need me to tell them what an impact Steve Kember had, while
centre-half Alan Stephenson and goalkeeper John Jackson made up a perfect spine of the team. One of the team’s threats that season was your famed long-throw, how did you develop that? It first started at Swindon. In those days it was the done thing for the wingers to take the throw-ins, and we suddenly realised that I could throw it slightly further than most. I worked on it quite a bit and rather than it just be a weapon for players to go for at the near post, eventually I was able to aim for the far post. Hopefully the strikers in the Palace team benefited from the way I was able to help create havoc. The highlight for you that season came in March, what do you recall of that month? We went into the away game at eventual champions Derby County on the back of a few matches unbeaten. A win up there would be such a vital one for our group of players who were still trying to believe whether this was going to be the season that mattered.

We completely outplayed them and even though I got the goal on the night the referee cancelled out a couple more! Even so it was such an important result because other people started taking notice of what we were capable of. A few days later we played Birmingham City and won by the same scoreline, so those wins were the ones that really pushed us into promotion contention. Injury caused you to miss the successful run-in, how difficult was that from a personal point of view? A few weeks later I got a knock from Jim Barron against Oxford United; I was flat out on the floor and ended up with a broken collarbone. That put me out for the final seven games and had to sit in the stands watching the lads get promoted rather than being out there in the thick of the action, but you never know we might not have got promotion if I was out there! It was quite a time to be watching from the stands and obviously the rollercoaster of the 3-2 win in

the final home game. I can still remember the level of support from those fans around me as they went mad with delight, and when the lads came out to celebrate near the Directors Box after the game that rounded off a memorable day.

alace’s eager youngsters, spearheaded by man-of-the-match David Swindlehurst, brushed away the unsavoury memories of two successive defeats that had knocked them out of their promotion-seeking stride and got grimly down to nailing the challenge of a surprisingly talented Blackburn side on Saturday. In doing so, they pushed themselves back into second place in the Second Division and emerged, too, with flying colours from a test of character that had manager Terry Venables enthusing afterwards. It was obvious from the opening moments that victory was not going to come easily against a Blackburn side who, after a dismal start, had won their previous two away games, including a fine win over high-flying Fulham. Faced with the absence of the experienced Paul Hinshelwood and Mike Elwiss, Venables took the bold step of dropping another seasoned campaigner in Nick Chatterton – “He’s had one or two personal problems lately and it was beginning to show in his play,” explained the Palace boss. The net result was that Palace went into the game with seven youngsters in the side, and another young man with little first-team experience – Neil Smillie – on the substitutes bench. But such is the talent in this Palace side that
their comparative rawness did not really show. Mind you, it was not particularly pretty to watch for most of the first half while Palace were finding their feet against a Blackburn side who had their fair share of ordinary performers, but who had in their ranks several outstanding players as well.

THE GLORY YEARS 59
Give Blackburn credit, too, for not pulling all back into defence. They were prepared to run at Palace, and in the first 40-minutes or so it was John Burridge in the Palace goal who had more important work to do than his Blackburn counterpart John Butcher. Palace’s best chance of that opening spell came in the 22nd minute when Brotherston flattened Swindlehurst as the big centre forward bored his way into the Blackburn penalty area. Palace besieged referee Angus McDonald with their penalty appeals, but they were strangely waved aside. It looked to be heading for a scoreless deadlock at half-time when Palace suddenly sprang into life and scored two goals in the space of a minute in the dying stages of the first period. The first came in the 42nd minute when Alan Birchenall recklessly chopped down Jerry Murphy a couple of yards outside the Blackburn penalty area. Palace’s strength in set-piece situations was illustrated graphically yet again. Murphy touched the ball to Kember who stopped it and Swindlehurst
PALACE

chipped an exquisite little lob over to Peter Nicholas at the far post. Nicholas headed back into the goalmouth and into the path of the advancing Ian Walsh, who scored with a diving header. Swindlehurst had taken a supporting role in that goal, but while Blackburn were still reeling from the precision of it all, he claimed star billing less than 60 seconds later as he gathered a Hilaire pass, tore through a Rovers defence that was in total disarray and beat Butcher with a low, firm shot. From that moment on it was Palace’s match, and when Rovers' Derek Fazackerley handled in the 66th minute under pressure from Walsh it was just a formality as Swindlehurst sent a carefully aimed penalty past Butcher. Palace – Burridge, Fenwick, Sansom, Kember, Cannon, Gilbert, Nicholas, Murphy, Swindlehurst, Walsh, Hilaire. Blackburn – Butcher, Hird, Bailey, Metcalfe, Keeley, Fazackerley, Brotherston, Garner, Craig, Fowler, Birchenall.

s the relentless run of fixtures continued, Palace exited the League Cup at Bristol City on the first day of November, with the Eagles shipping three goals before half-time in a 4-1 defeat. Their mini-slump continued four days later at Selhurst Park where they drew 1-1 against an unyielding Barnsley, also mid-table in the Second Division. With Neil Redfearn wanting a return to his northern roots, a deal was set up with Hull City which would see Alex Dyer go in the other direction. As it happened, Redfearn opted to stay so Dyer arrived for ÂŁ225,000 and made his debut at Bournemouth as a substitute for Redfearn, but to little effect as Palace lost 2-0. The following week Redfearn left for Watford so Dyer made his full debut in a home fixture with Leicester City and the Eagles returned to winning ways with a fine 4-2 victory. The Foxes scored early on but with 15 minutes remaining they had shipped four goals with Dyer providing an assist for Mark Bright, while former junior Chris Powell played his last game with a late cameo. Despite the prospect of a play-off place and the entertaining football on show, attendances in SE25 were still below the 10,000 mark. On 22nd November the club gained its first success in the Simod Cup by also overcoming Walsall at home by a 4-2 scoreline. Trailing at the break, Steve
Coppell’s team netted three goals in six second half minutes with new signing Dyer helping himself to two in front of a lowly 2,893 crowd that saw Ian Wright claim his 50th Palace strike. A trip to The Hawthorns followed as the Eagles again took part in a high-scoring game in a 5-3 defeat to West Brom. Trailing by a single goal, Dyer equalised a minute into the second half and then the PALACE

THE GLORY YEARS 61
Finding themselves two-down by the break, Wright offered a glimmer of hope early in the second half but with too many players off-key, the Seagulls cruised to a 3-1 victory. 1988 ended with a long journey north to play on Oldham Athletic’s plastic pitch and some compensation for the debacle in Brighton was gained. Thomas set the Eagles on their way just before the break but had go off injured early in the second half as Oldham got back on terms, but Wright, on his 150th appearance, netted twice to clinch all three points.
floodgates opened before Geoff Thomas reduced the deficit to 4-3 with two minutes remaining, only for the Baggies to kill the game seconds later. The following week Palace’s slump down the table continued as they drew 0-0 with third-placed Manchester City. However, a win was claimed at Birmingham City on 10th December as Dyer’s bright start continued when his corner kick eluded the Blues goalkeeper in the 34th minute to claim a 1-0 success. Progress in the Simod Cup continued the following Tuesday down at Southampton where the First Division outfit were seen off 2-1 thanks to goals from Wright and Dyer, whose winner came with just two minutes remaining. There was then a second successive goalless game in SE25 with Leeds United, and as the month drew to a close there was the little matter of a trip to Brighton on Boxing Day where again the Eagles’ erratic away form continued. Step Back
Ian Wright comes up against some unconventional tackling from Blackburn's Derek Fazackerley. Probably a sending off today but the rules were, shall we say, slightly more relaxed in 1985 when this shot was taken.

HELP POWER CRYSTAL PALACE POWERCHAIR FC This month, Palace for Life Foundation are calling for your help to raise money for Crystal Palace Powerchair FC. By buying a ticket in the Santa Draw, you’ll be directly helping us fund three new chairs for the team, enabling more people to play the sport they love. Powerchair football is for people with physical disabilities who use electric wheelchairs in order to manoeuvre and kick the ball. The Foundation have been running these sessions at Waddon Leisure Centre for four years and the impact on players’ lives is huge. However, each chair costs thousands of pounds and our team desperately need new ones to help them play and compete with their opponents. Born with femoral hypoplasia, a rare condition affecting his growth, 15-year-old Palace fan Joel Sprouse has been playing with our team for four years and it has been life-changing. “Joel was never sporty growing up, but he absolutely loved it from the outset,” said his mum Janice. “He loved using the powerchair and the camaraderie of it; I just saw a new side of my son come to life. It’s for all people and it’s all-inclusive. It’s liberating, because when you have a disability, that can stop you from joining in with your peers and there can be limitations to what you can do, but powerchair football gets rid of all of that. “The chairs that we have, we are so thankful for, but they really are on their last legs. In the same way that fans get frustrated when their team can’t buy new players, we’re having that frustration because we don’t have the chairs that would give us the cutting edge!
PALACE

“For Joel, powerchair football is absolutely the highlight of his week, he loves the challenge of it and he’s learnt so many important things like teamwork. It would just be amazing if the Palace fans could get behind us.” Want to help? You can sign up to the Super Draw online (details on the opposite page) meaning you never miss a draw even if you can’t make a match, purchase tickets at Selhurst Park on matchdays or donate at palaceforlife.org/fundraising.

My brother Hiram inspired my love of football. He has played for the Palace first-team before and when he joined the club my family decided to come with him so we moved from Battersea to Kent. Seeing my brother do well was definitely an inspiration. He’s with Exeter City now but whenever he has games in and around London, I’ll go down with my parents to watch him. Having a professional footballer in the family only made me want to become one more. Hiram and my dad were the ones who used to help me with football and I used to go outside with him to play back when he wasn’t so busy, and since then I fell into a love of football. During that time, Hiram kept me motivated and told me the important things to do as I progressed. I’m learning that things such as sleep can cost you on gameday. It’s the little things that can cost you, so we need to prepare better individually. Physically and tactically the boys are doing quite well; we just need to focus for the full 90 minutes. A lot of the things we need to improve on come from being quite a young side but it all comes with experience. It’s been a challenging season but one we’re working hard on to improve. I think we’ve had quite a slow start but gradually we’ve been getting better. We want to keep the team united to do well and achieve our goals this season.

While I play in midfield, I can play in defence as well when asked to. I prefer to play in midfield though, where I’m typically quite defensive anyway or a box-to-box number eight. I’m quite dynamic in my positions but look to play the ball wherever my role is. My style of play means I like keeping it short normally, though sometimes I like to spray the ball from the centre of midfield, but mainly, I like to keep it. My vision and range of passing are strengths, so if I see a run I’ll be able to pick it out. Because I’m looking to step up soon, I’m working hard to improve my all-round game. I’m working to build on my strength and ability going forward because going into older age groups, those attributes become very important. I’m working in the gym to improve on them in preparation for more under-23 matches, which are quite a step up but I want to break in the team soon. You mustn’t be brushed off the ball at that level - it’s much faster and more physically demanding. I really enjoy it at Palace because of my teammates and coaches. I’m happy to be with the club right now because it’s quite a fun, bubbly atmosphere. Even with the gym sessions, we’ll all have a laugh while taking it seriously. We’ve got a good balance, and the coaches are amazing because they help individually and collectively so if there’s something you need, you can just knock on their door.

west ham UNITED 3 Crystal palace 2 Saturday 8th December 2018
Despite taking the lead within six minutes, Palace lost a hard-fought battle after a West Ham comeback clinched three points thanks to a smash-and-grab 17-minute spell. James McArthur opened the Eagles’ account in quickfire fashion when he raced into the Hammers’ box to prod a James Tomkins header underneath Lukasz Fabianski, and the half came to a close in dramatic fashion when Luka Milivojevic struck the crossbar with a long-distance free-kick. That seemed to stir the hosts and three minutes

after the restart Robert Snodgrass curled in excellently from the edge of the box, and then after Wayne Hennessey saved a free-kick from the Scotsman, Javier Hernandez reacted quickest to strike into the Eagles’ net. On 65 minutes Felipe Anderson seemed to have put the result to bed when he notched an excellent strike of his own by stroking the ball home from 20 yards, however Palace were handed optimism when Jeffrey Schlupp nodded in Max Meyer’s cross but that glimmer of hope ultimately proved to be in vein.

Crystal Palace 1 Leicester city 0 Saturday 15th December 2018
A sensational strike by Luka Milivojevic sealed successive home wins for Palace for the first time this season as Roy Hodgson’s team claimed victory against Leicester City with a dogged display. Making his first league start, Vicente Guaita was given a first half scare when he miscontrolled a backpass and Jamie Vardy pounced to win the ball and pop it into the unguarded net, however the Foxes striker was penalised for a foul on the relieved goalkeeper. However the key moment came on 39 minutes when

a wonderstrike handed Palace the lead as Milivojevic produced a brilliant attempt that arced away from Kasper Schmeichel’s dive and nestled inside the net. As Palace dug in after the break, hearts were in mouths with 11 minutes to go when Vardy stabbed towards the bottom corner but Guaita showed marvellous reactions to tip the effort onto the post, and received the slice of luck his stop deserved when the rebound trickled back into his thankful grasp to ensure the points remained in a soggy south London.
