WE BID TO FINISH THE SEASON STRONGLY, SAFE IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT WE’LL BE PREPARING FOR OUR SEVENTH SUCCESSIVE PREMIER LEAGUE CAMPAIGN.

THE MANAGER 05

no lack of effort or desire i'm sure I am delighted to be writing these programme notes today having passed the ‘magical’ 40 points mark to ensure our place in the Premier League next season.

To achieve the club’s earliest ever confirmation of our top flight status, in a week in which we faced current champions Manchester City and an Arsenal side that were unbeaten in the league at home for 16 games in a row, is a victory that the players can be mightily proud of achieved. The game against City was always going to be a tough one. We were expecting them to have the lion’s share of possession, but I was proud of the players for still being in with a fighting chance of taking something from Pep Guardiola’s side until the very last throws of the game. However, going to Arsenal, off the back of a battling 90 minutes against the Premier League champions, meant we had confidence in our ability to get something from the trip to north London. The victory against Unai Emery’s side was a fantastic team performance, and to take four points from Arsenal this season is a total which we haven’t been able to record for 25 years! You could see just how happy the players were for Christian Benteke to find the back of the net again, which highlighted what a well-respected and well-liked player the striker is around the club. I have always had faith in his ability, and it is a pity that he has been on the injury table for far longer than both he and we would have liked this year. I hope for him, and us all, that he continues to impress in the remaining training sessions and three games this season, and that he receives your full support too. Moving on to today’s game against Everton, I must

PALACE

first give a special mention to our honorary guests who will be in attendance: several members from the Eagles’ promotion-winning sides of ’69, ’79 & ’89. I hope that I shall get the opportunity to meet them and that you will show your appreciation of all that they did for our club. I would like to welcome Marco Silva and all Everton staff, players and board members to Selhurst Park today, in what will be the 20th Premier League match between our two sides. Earlier in the season, we were on course for a hard earned point away at Goodison Park, until two late goals in the final three minutes from Dominic CalvertLewin and Cenk Tosun meant we returned to south London empty-handed. With our Premier League status confirmed, we have the chance today to make amends for that late heartbreak, as we look to finish as high up the table as we can. There will be no lack of effort or desire I'm sure. We shall be counting on your loyal and noisy support this afternoon and in our final home game next month, as we bid to finish the season strongly – safe in the knowledge that we’ll be preparing for our seventh successive Premier League campaign next season. Enjoy the game!

WE CAN IMPROVE ON OUR HOME FORM, AND RECAPTURE LAST SEASON AND THE SEASON BEFORE WHEN TEAMS KNEW PALACE WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST PLACES TO PLAY.

THE CAPTAIN 07

to make you happy and proud Even though I felt at 39 points we had secured our Premier League status, it is nice to be writing to you now that we are mathematically safe; it is a good feeling.

Without that pressure for the last three games, we are looking forward to these games and perhaps using these matches to try out some other options and give more minutes to the players who play a key role in our squad. We need to try and get as many points as we can, because first of all we play for our fans and we play for points. We know we haven’t had the best season at home but two of our last three games are at home so we are going to try to take six points from those two games because this will be massive for our fans; we want to make you happy and proud. The fans deserve to be happy until the end of the season and will be with hopefully two victories in these home games. But I hope we have made you proud in many games when we have played away this season. Of course, it is nice when you play at home and win in front of 26,000 Palace supporters. But for fans who travel to away games, we like for them to return home happy and we did this, this season against some top sides and it was amazing – just like we did last weekend in north London. The Arsenal win was special when you consider how many years we have waited to beat them away everything that day was perfect: the weather, the pitch, the opponent, our game plan and the three points; I think that was a complete victory for us. I am so pleased for Christian that he performed against Arsenal in the way he did because he deserves it so much. When footballers don’t play, sometimes they don’t care but that is not Christian, he is a guy who cares

PALACE

v

EVERTON

every single day about football and I love to see that from my teammates because I am like that. Christian knows that I love to see that in him because sometimes when he perhaps misses a chance, we speak about that situation for five minutes and I can see that he is a guy who is very focused in what he is doing. Hopefully he is over his injury, and with three games to go, I know he can finish strongly and it makes me excited for next season with him. Today’s game will be tricky, with Everton playing three of their last five games against the top six and winning each of those matches. They are a good team with a good manager but being at Selhurst Park we have an advantage and we have to use it. It is time to show that we can improve on our home form, and recapture last season and the season before when teams knew Palace was one of the hardest places to play. Hopefully a good performance and result today will set us up nicely for the end of season awards on Tuesday. We can again say we have had a good season and we are all looking forward to that night, to see the fans. But until then… Make some noise!

A SPECIAL MENTION MUST GO TO CHRISTIAN, WHO’S HAD A REALLY TOUGH TIME THIS SEASON – HAVING BEEN SIDELINED FOR SO LONG. HE LOOKED LIKE HIS FORMER SELF ON SUNDAY, AND WE ALL KNOW HE STILL HAS THE ABILITY TO BE DEADLY IN FRONT OF GOAL.

THE CHAIRMAN 09

massive win to secure our future Welcome to the supporters, staff, players and directors of Everton Football Club to Selhurst Park today, and to every Palace supporter here for the penultimate time this season.

Arsenal… what a massive win to secure our future in the Premier League. It’s one which I’m sure you all enjoyed, especially the 3,000 of you who made so much noise in north London last Sunday. Huge credit to the players, Roy and his coaching staff for yet another extraordinary away performance. We were thoroughly deserving of the three points, and to secure our seventh successive season in the top flight – a club record – is magnificent and should be celebrated by everyone associated with the club. A special mention must go to Christian, who’s had a really tough time this season – having been sidelined for so long. He looked like his former self on Sunday, and we all know he still has the ability to be deadly in front of goal. With 200 Premier League games and 70 goals now under his belt, I hope he can finish strong and put the ball in the net a few more times during the remainder of this campaign. With three games to go, there remains a chance of bettering last season’s position of 11th – and I know Roy and the squad are keen to finish with a flourish, and with two home games left – hopefully, something more for all of you to cheer about. I am also really excited today to welcome back several members of the squads from 1968/69, 1978/79 and 1988/89 – the teams who secured the club’s first, second and third spells respectively in the top flight of English football. Some of these guys are part of the reason I support the club and it will be pretty special to meet some of them for the first time. They will be introduced to

PALACE

you at half-time, so please show your appreciation as we welcome back several old friends. We are also celebrating the work of the Palace for Life Foundation today. We are all extremely proud of the work our Foundation does with vulnerable youngsters in south London, especially around knife crime and homelessness, but also helping many of them to achieve their full potential through the power of sport and teamwork. We are joined today by a number of the Foundation’s teams, including their powerchair football players and a group of young refugees who took on a side from Everton this morning. Please make them feel welcome if you see them in the Fanzone or in the stands. Palace Ladies will play their second ever match at Selhurst Park tomorrow, in their penultimate fixture of the season. Even though it’s been a tough season, it would be great to see as many of you here as possible to support the team against local rivals Charlton. On Tuesday, we are holding our end of season awards night at Boxpark. Other clubs opt for formal corporate events, but we are proud to put on this free event as a way of thanking you all your support this season. Last year it was an amazing event, so I’d encourage you all to join us from 4pm, with the main event beginning at 6pm. Enjoy the game today, and get behind Roy’s team as you always do, Up the Palace.

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Everton // Saturday 27th April // Selhurst Park

Today's game Towards the business end of the season, both clubs are finding something in the way of form: Palace have found the back of the net in each of their last seven home league games, after failing to score in seven of the 10 before that. Whilst Everton have won four of their last five Premier League games, as many victories as they managed in their previous 17. This is Crystal Palace’s second-best-ever Premier League campaign after 35 games, with their haul of 42 points bettered only by 2013/14 (43). Everton are four points better off at this stage this season (49 pts) than last season (45). Wilfried Zaha has scored nine Premier League goals this season – he’s never reached double figures in a single top-flight campaign. But whilst the Eagles will be hoping the Ivory Coast international is firing on all cylinders up top, the defence will be keeping their eye on Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson – the Icelandic international has been involved in seven Premier League goals against Crystal Palace (three goals, four assists). All four of Roy Hodgson’s Premier League wins over Everton have come at home (P7 W4 D1 L2), with Blackburn in November 1997, Fulham in March 2008 and September 2009 and West Brom in May 2011. Whereas, Marco Silva has lost two of his three Premier League games against Crystal Palace.

Luka Milivojevic Only six players in the Premier League this season have scored more big chances (a situation in which the ball has a clear path to goal) than Milivojevic.

STEVE

KE M BE R

We are delighted to welcome Steve Kember back to Selhurst Park today as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1968/69 promotion side, as well as the 40th year since the 1978/79 team replicated the feat. Here, Kember talks with Terry Byfield about those two wonderful campaigns.

It is quite easy in football to have iconic moments. However, what isn’t so easy is becoming an icon. And what is nigh on impossible is becoming a club legend across two different decades and playing a key part in two of a club’s proudest and most important achievements. That is of course unless your name is Steve Kember; a name that still carries a lot of affection in the terraces almost 54 years since the midfielder signed his first professional contract with his boyhood club on the 8th December 1965. For Kember, the Eagles of south London were a big part of his childhood, and he fondly recalls the journey every young Palace-going supporter dreams of: from fan to player. “I started with Palace at the age of 14 and this was amazing considering Palace were

STEVE KEMBER 17

the side I would watch with my dad from five years old. To actually start to play for the juniors and then get my first pro contract when I was 17 in December 1965, it was a dream come true.” As Motorhead famously sang ‘Everything changes, it all stays the same’ and although the beautiful game may well be unrecognisable to the one that Kember was involved with from the early 60s, the fear of losing players to the perceived big clubs remained a reality, just like it does today. Thankfully for followers of the south Londoners, Kember’s affinity with the Eagles could not be bought: “I had offers to go to Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham and QPR, obviously Palace were my club and I felt I had a good opportunity of getting into the first team.” Looking back on the first promotion campaign that the midfielder was involved in, the belief that the squad, under the guidance of Bert Head (the manager’s 328 games for the Eagles still remains the thirdmost in Palace’s managerial history) could achieve something special was bubbling under the surface right from the very first kick of the campaign: “We always thought we had a chance. That year we had all the snow over the Christmas period and we basically didn’t play for four weeks and we’d been on a good run and everyone was saying ‘you’ve lost your good run now, what’s going to happen?’ “We played Derby County midweek, who went on and won the league, and beat them 1-0 up at the Baseball Ground and then we played Birmingham on the Saturday and beat them 1-0 again – I think I scored actually to win the game. “Another important game was when we played Middlesbrough on Easter Monday, we beat them 1-0 and everyone thought: we are going to do it.” Kember’s contribution to that memorable season was huge, with moments such as scoring one of the goals against Fulham that sealed Palace’s debut in the First Division for the next season. Of course, though, this was a team effort built on

PALACE

v

EVERTON

R "THE SCENES AFTE BEATING FULHAM TO 3-2 WERE SECOND HAD NONE. FINALLY WE T GOT INTO THE FIRS DIVISION TO PLAY " WITH THE BIG BOYS

solid foundations and Kember was quick to praise the defence behind him, in particular the central defensive pairing of John McCormick and Mel Blyth, with the former going on to win the first ever Player of the Year award for Palace in the 1971/72 season. “McCormick was your big, rough, tough, centrehalf and Mel, to be fair, was a gifted player who could play in midfield but went back to play with John and they were a formidable pair. “We were lucky that the back four played almost every game and that sort of basis was the main reason why we went up; those two were brilliant. The Fulham game, going in 2-0 down, and thinking: ‘We aren’t going to cock it up last minute, are we?’ but the manager was always saying to us ‘you’ve got to keep playing your football, keep knocking it about, get your crosses and shots in’ and I was lucky enough to get myself on a free run and knock it past the ‘keeper. “The scenes after beating Fulham 3-2 were second to none. Finally we had got into the First Division to play with the big boys.” Like all football seasons, it wasn’t always plain sailing for Head’s charges with dropped points, marginal offsides and, unfortunately, player injuries curtailing the

18 STEVE KEMBER

promotion momentum. But how a team reacts in the face of adversity tells you a lot about them, and when Bobby Woodruff was lost to injury, the questions of how Palace would cope began to rise: “Bobby was a really good player, not only a good player with his feet but also his hands with his long throw. He scored loads of important goals for us in that period before he got his injury and it was a massive blow to us. However, we had enough strength in depth to get by and with the team spirit.” Having left Palace for stints with Leicester City and Chelsea, the lure of Selhurst Park, just as it had been back in 1965 for Kember, was too much to resist when Terry Venables discussed a return to Crystal Palace during the 1978/79 season. “I got a phone call from a Daily Mirror reporter saying: ‘I think Terry is going to come in for you; ‘he wants you to go back there’ and after going so well for Leicester after a season or two the whole thing was falling apart. “It was a dream come true to come back to Palace and when Terry spoke to me he said: ‘I’m looking for you to slot into midfield and be the old head and nurture the young, skilful players through.’ “I came back in and apart from a spell where I got banned, I virtually played in every game.” With Kember returning full of memories and lessons from the club’s first ever promotion to the top flight, this was always going to prove invaluable to a young, exciting team looking to replicate the feat Kember & Co. had orchestrated a decade earlier. “The thing about those boys of 78/79 is that they just got into the habit of winning, starting with winning the FA Youth Cup twice in a row. There were so many talented players, Billy [Gilbert], Jimmy Cannon, Dave Swindlehurst, [Ian] Walshy, [Vince] Hilaire, just loads of talented players. They didn’t take a lot of talking to because they were such good players.”

TO PALACE AND WHEN

TERRY SPOKE TO ME HE

SAID: ‘I’M LOOKING

FOR YOU TO SLOT INTO MIDFIELD AND BE THE

20 STEVE KEMBER

Again, as everything changes, it all stays the same, and much like the 1968/69 team, 10 years later the foundations of success for the 78/79 promotion were built on defensive solidity with just four defeats in the whole campaign. “Jimmy Cannon was a great player; not only a good defender but he was good on the ball and we had an understanding that if he came forward with the ball that I would drop in at centre-half for him. “We didn’t give a lot of goals away. Same as the ‘69 side, if your spine is ok: your goalkeeper, two central defenders, two centre-midfielders and your strikers, you’ve got half a chance.” The memories remain as fresh as they did on the day for Kember and none more so than the night of that Burnley game in front of a 51,000 crowd; the match that confirmed Kember’s return to the club coincided with a return to the First Division: “The night against Burnley took us an hour to drive down South Norwood hill to the Queen’s Hotel; just a phenomenal evening. “Getting promotion again and the actual atmosphere around the place was just incredible. When you keep winning football matches there is no greater place to be and when you keep losing them it’s the other way round! “The football we played, and the way we played, that was one of the other great things about it. Not only were we winning games but we were winning them in style. The football that Terry had implemented into the boys when they were younger, passing the ball, was being implemented." Looking towards today, as Palace run out for their penultimate home game of their sixth consecutive season in the Premier League, it is in a large part down to the foundations laid down by Kember and the sides of ‘69 and ’79 that the Eagles are able to class themselves as an established Premier League outfit. Today will see a whole host of icons from those two teams – as well as the ’89 side – returning for another well-deserved moment in the sun at Selhurst

STEVE KEMBER 21

Park in front of those that saw their greatness and those that have recently heard about it, and it is an occasion Kember is very much looking forward to: “When you all meet up, you’ll be surprised at just how quickly the banter starts up again that you had in the dressing room. “I have found a couple of times when we have had the ‘69 team back together all of the sudden the laughs are there again and you never lose that. That’s one thing you miss after you stop playing: the banter, the camaraderie in the dressing room. “It will be great to see everyone, especially with me having a double meaning for being there with the 69 and the 79 boys!"

"THE NIGHT AGAINST BURNLEY TOOK US AN HOUR TO DRIVE DOWN SOUTH NORWOOD

100 YEARS OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

PART 20

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

2012/13 This was the last season that the programme was produced using the saddlestitching method being stapled along the spine as since then the programme has been perfect bound. Once more each edition was numbered on the laminated cover together with a clock showing kick-off time. The programme opened with the manager notes ‘From The Dugout’ with captain Mile Jedinak adding ‘From The Dressing Room’. The visitors were covered with eight pages that included a view from an opposition member of the press. Kevin Day was a regular contributor for ‘From The Stand’ and in each edition a Palace player was asked for his ‘First and Last’. Another home player was the subject of an interview and Chris Waters produced ‘Cult Heroes’. On the historic side there was ‘Names and Games’ that concerned our opposition and ‘On This Day’ looked back at previous Palace games. A different Palace supporter contributed ‘Away Days’ about a specific trip to a game at the home of the opposition. The programme concluded in usual fashion and the final inside page found Communications Manager Terry Byfield reflecting on events during his time with the club.

2013/14 Back in the Premier League and there was a rise to £3.50 for the cost of the 80 pages now. The Palace player portrayed on the cover would be the subject of an in-depth interview in the centre of each edition that opened in usual fashion followed by one of the cochairmen giving their view ‘From The Boardroom’. The visitors' section was increased to eleven pages and a new item was ‘Meet The Palace Staff’ who work behind the scenes. ‘Final Score’ reviewed in words and pictures recent Palace games and following the two pages on the academy and development squads there was an interview with a junior and ‘Where Are They Now?’ looking at a former academy player. ‘Foot In Both Camps’ profiled five players who served Palace and our opposition and this was followed by ‘Treasure Trove’, a section on offbeat Palace memorabilia, then ‘Squad Numbers’ looked back at some of the players behind the numbers since 1992. A picture was utilised in ‘Action Replay’ looking back at a previous encounter with the opposition and a player gave his ‘Dream Team’.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29

2014/15

2015/16

Jonathon Rogers started his four-year stint in the editor's chair by redesigning the programme for this season into four distinct sections that was laid out on the first inside page and each of these sections had its own index. First came ‘Pre-Match’ that contained the regular opening features and ended with 11 pages concerning the opposition and stats between us. ‘Half-Time’ included ‘Social Media Round-Up’, ‘My Perfect Player’, created by a Palace player, ‘Mark My Words’ by Mark Bright and ‘Final Score’ reviews games in stats and cartoon fashion. ‘View From The Upper’, Barry Wilder’s ‘Away Days’, ‘From The Press Box’, ‘Around The Palace’ and the Palace player interview were wrapped up in ‘Post-Match’ and the final part was ‘History and Stats’. This opened with ‘Selhurst Seasons’ looking back over ninety years at Selhurst Park, Palace and The Great War then ‘Picture Palace’ which portrayed a selection of historic moments. ‘One Hit Wonders’ looked at our single goal players and the stats section completed a comprehensive production. Finally there was a pull-out section in which there were collectible cards of players celebrating the 90th anniversary at our home ground.

There were some subtle changes to the content for this season in the selection of articles and the first of these was ‘In The Bag’ in which a Palace player had to pick seven questions from a choice of fifty and a new addition to the contributors was TV presenter and Palace fan Layla Anna-Lee. To show the spread of our fan base there was a regular ‘Global Eagles’ page highlighting supporter groups from around the world and after this was ‘FanTasy Palace’ in which a fan told of his/her favourite memories from following the Eagles. To illustrate how the club were becoming a true Premier League outfit there was a page in each issue updating the news of the players out on loan at various clubs then a profile on one of our development squads. Towards the end there was a part that looked back at a previous home encounter with that day’s opposition showing the programme cover and back page with a match report, player interview and programme critique. After the stats was a pull-out section for our younger supporters titled ‘Junior Eagles Mag’.

Mark Butcher, fondly known as Butch, hung up his gloves a decade ago at his home ground The Oval, bringing a spirited cricket career to a close. Ahead of an England summer that could be one in a generation, he spoke with James Woodroof about Ashes and World Cup hopes, his beloved Surrey CCC, the famous red and blue and a special relationship with Steve Kember.

40

E

"It should be a ripping summer – with the World Cup and England as favourites, and an Ashes Series – it doesn’t get any bigger than that for the sport"

ngland’s cricketers are about to embark upon what could be a life-changing summer for themselves, and indeed – the game. England hosts the ICC Cricket World Cup in a month’s time – doing so as firm favourites, before looking to regain the Ashes in favourable conditions. Should it go to plan, it could be a summer that eclipses the impact of 2005. Quite different circumstances then, to when Croydonborn Mark Butcher broke into the England side for the 1997 Ashes series as a combative left-handed opening batsman, coming up against the undisputed best side in the world – one widely regarded as the best ever. Butcher recalls, “It was pretty nerve-wracking but very exciting, we won my first Test – Graham Thorpe and Nasser Hussain put on a huge partnership, we bowled Australia out for just over 100 and we won the Test by nine wickets. It was kind of like ‘what’s all the fuss about’? This is an easy game! “Before we knew it, we were 2-1 down and then lost the series. From the 2005 Ashes onwards, England have largely dominated – but in the late 80s, 90s and 2000s, Australia were dominant – and despite getting a hiding from them, it was a fantastic time to be playing.” It wasn’t plain sailing for Butcher whose career faltered in the early 2000s and he even considered packing it in, but in typically dogged fashion and with the help of his father Alan, he forced his way back into Michael Vaughan’s side and rebuilt his international career as a number three bat. He would go on to earn 71 Tests, one as captain, averaging a respectable 34.58 runs per innings. Now working for Sky Sports as a pundit, he is quick to back England’s chances. “It should be a ripping summer – with the World Cup and England as favourites, and an Ashes series – it doesn’t get any bigger than that for the sport. Almost regardless of who wins, the game can sorely afford to not make a huge splash this summer and hopefully win over a whole new generation of cricket fans.” As a Surrey CCC player for his entire career and with pivotal contributions to three County Championship titles in the space of four seasons, Butcher was delighted for the county winning their first title since 2002, last season under young

PALACE

MARK BUTCHER 41

captain Rory Burns. In Butcher's eyes, the side was built around “old school principles of producing brilliant young players.” Indeed, he sees parallels between Surrey’s approach and Roy Hodgson’s Palace. “I almost go back to the Surrey idea of bringing through young players, not being afraid to send them out there to do the work – if you feel they’re good enough. In doing so, there’s a pride in playing for the shirt – but also the belief that you get, when somebody like Roy Hodgson who’s been everywhere, seen everything, done everything – that he believes you’re good enough to play against the best in the world. If you get five or six guys in a team around the same

PALACE

v

EVERTON

age group with the same drive and same ambition, it’s amazing what can be achieved under those circumstances. “All the while you’re producing talent from within, and not relying on buying people who are perhaps at the wrong end of their career to help you out of trouble, the better chance you have at creating sustained success. That’s what it looks like the club is trying to do – and it’s paying dividends.” Butcher became a lifelong Palace fan after being taught at Purley’s Cumnor House by today’s programme cover feature Steve Kember. “He used to coach football and cricket teams at my school, along with my dad. Our families are close – I was best man for his eldest son Matthew’s wedding and he was best man for me. ‘Zimmer’ as we call him is a great man – still as full of life, with an eye for a player, and loves his sport as much as he ever did.” Butcher has since embarked upon a music career as a singer-songwriter and guitarist, with his second album launching in July. Reflecting on his innings so far, he said: “It’s not a bad life – I say to people that the idea was to see if I could get through until my retirement getting through without having a proper job, I’ve managed to scam it so far!”

1984/85 LEAGUE AND EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS’ CUP CHAMPIONS

The manager Everton are the third English club that Marco Silva has managed, having arrived with Hull City before heading to Watford prior to taking over at Goodison Park at the start of this season. A modest playing career never saw Silva leave his native Portugal but that couldn’t be more different from his managerial career. The coach won the Superleague with Olympiakos, leaving the club with a 79% win record during his one year at the Greek outfit – a performance that added to his growing reputation after picking up the Segunda Liga Coach of the Year in 2011/12.

Club legend Alan Ball joined Everton after winning the World Cup with England in 1966 in a deal that would become a British transfer record with Blackpool receiving £110,000 for letting their star go. The move saw Ball become hugely influential in Everton’s lifting of the First Division crown in 1969/70. Famously, manager Harry Catterick was asked to put a price on his talismanic midfielder, he duly replied: “£1 million." – a sum that if offered would’ve broken the British transfer record five times over. Ball did eventually leave Everton after 78 goals in 249 appearances but not quite for the £1million (Arsenal paid £220,000).

Despite the Brazilian international’s relatively young age, the former Fluminense player has enjoyed a good start to life in the Premier League, firstly with Watford, before leaving Vicarage Road after one season to reunite with Marco Silva at Goodison Park. 18 goals (three headers, 10 with his right foot and five on his left) and five assists across his 70 appearances in the top flight of English football is a solid return for the Samba star. Things you didn't know... ABOUT THE TOFFEES

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Everton.

The club was originally founded in 1878 as St Dominigo FC, named after the Methodist church in Everton, which gave local people the chance to play sport all year round. The team attracted a lot of interest outside of the church, so it was unanimously decided to change the name to Everton in November 1879. Their opening match under their new moniker was a resounding 6-0 win over St. Peters.

Anfield is of course synonymous with Liverpool but Everton were the first team to play there. Having outgrown their two previous venues, the Toffees rented the land from local brewers, the Orrell brothers, and played their first match at Anfield in September 1884. The club then won their first Championship there in 1891 but trouble began when the then club president purchased the ground and demanded a much higher rent. Having found land to purchase across Stanley Park, Everton decided to move to what became Goodison Park.

The club’s Toffees nickname comes from the fact that in the club’s early days, the ground was close to Ye Anciente Everton Toffee House, and then upon moving to Goodison Park they were next to Old Mother Nobletts Toffee Shop. The latter sold Everton Mints which proved a hit. To counteract this, Ye Anciente hit back by getting permission to throw free toffees into the crowd before the match and at half-time - a tradition that still exists today.

CHRIS WATERS 51

Dixie Dean holds the record for most goals in a single season, when he scored a remarkable 60 goals for Everton in just 39 games in the 1927/28 season. He achieved this at the tender age of 21. He finished that imperious campaign with a hattrick against Arsenal. In the 1928 calendar year he notched a staggering 85 goals. With 473 goals over 502 appearances, he stuck with the club when they were relegated and was rewarded with winning another title upon their return to the First Division.

In 1938, after being asked to design a crest that could be used on club neck-ties, Secretary Theo Kelly thought of the Prince Rupert Tower. This had been constructed in Everton in 1787 to act as holding cells for criminals, and had become a local landmark. However, it was not until 1978 that it first appeared on the club’s shirt, replacing the embroidered initials EFC, and still appears on their kits today.

The Toffees took part in the first ever penalty shootout in the European Cup in 1970. UEFA had introduced the shootout after the old system of a third tie played at a neutral ground (and failing that a toss of a coin) was proving increasingly problematic in a congested fixture calendar. Thus, after drawing 1-1 both home and away with Borussia Monchengladbach, history was created as the tie went to penalties - the Toffees won the shootout 4-3.

Everton hold the record for the most seasons in England’s top tier with a remarkable 115 campaigns out of 118. The Toffees have only spent 1930/31 and 1951-54 out of the top flight. The closest they came to relegation in recent times was in the 1993/94 campaign when they had to win their final match of the season against Wimbledon. They duly did so, but only after coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that secured the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

With just under 200 league games for Palace, how do you look back on your time? We really liked living down in the area of Crystal Palace and settled really well. We had times living in Beckenham, south Croydon and then ended up in Banstead. Palace for me was a really happy time; I was fortunate to join during the promotion season and I was there when Malcolm Allison came to the club but obviously that period wasn’t such a great time as we suffered relegation but honestly, when I look back on that time of my career, I always wonder why I moved. Joining in that promotion year, a season that was truly about what dreams are made of, wasn't it? The ambition and expectation was certainly something that hit me and there was no doubt that the aim was to be moving up to the next division. I made my debut in the victory against Oxford United and was pleased to be given an extended run in the team but our season was halted early in 1969 due to bad weather and we had an enforced winter break. I think we went without a game for about three weeks but from the restart we went on a great run and never lost another game. During that unbeaten run of games there was great confidence and the team were flying and that

PALACE

v

THE GLORY YEARS 57

self-belief got us the results and on the final day we were 2-0 down to Fulham but came out and won 3-2 to clinch promotion, the season was like story book stuff for me. Throughout your career you were extremely versatile when it came to positions. Did you have a preference? As a young player I was never a left winger, but more of a central midfield player but because of my pace clubs tended to play me on the wing. Then at Celtic, under Jock Stein, I was played as a striker and scored a number of goals for their reserve side but having left there for Morton I was once again back on the wing. Eventually I did get the chance to play as a striker but when Palace came calling I was back lining up as a winger. Funny enough, for the promotion run in I was put upfront alongside Cliff Jackson; I didn’t score that many goals but the team set up seemed to suit us and we blended well and the results reflected that.

PALACE

v

EVERTON

Once we got promotion though I presume the management thought that wouldn’t be an ideal position for me so eventually went back to the wing. I must say though that my most successful season was my last one at Selhurst when I went to left back which I really enjoyed. After your playing career came to an end you went into coaching, which was no surprise as you had showed an interest whilst playing. At Palace I used to have the opportunity of coaching the Palace schoolboys at the club. Kenny Sansom was in that group and when the chief scout used to ask me whether there were any standouts, I mentioned him because he always took his game to another level each session. I later remember watching a schoolboy international game on TV in Scotland and there was Kenny representing his country, which was great to see how he progressed at club and country in his career having seen him coming through the Palace ranks during my time there.

AUL HINSHELWOOD’S last-gasp equaliser at Filbert Street would not have won any ‘Goal of the Month’ award. “I would have been upset if my missus couldn’t have scored that one” he joked afterwards. The goal gave Hinshelwood some of the spotlight for a change. He had to think to remember the last time he scored: “It was against Millwall just after the Christmas before last,” he said. But this one is sure to stick in his mind: “I feel I have now got my full confidence back after the cartilage injury in mid-season. And I am again confident in myself has enabled me to get up into scoring positions.” A free kick, followed by a lob into the box by Billy Gilbert, set off a frantic scramble and what actually happened next can only be retold by Hinshelwood himself. “They failed to clear with a couple of headers and then I saw Jerry Murphy’s shot hit the post. The ball came back off the goalkeeper’s head and I was there to follow up.” Hinshelwood was mobbed by his relieved colleagues after the second extraordinary smash-andgrab finish by Palace in a week. At Bristol the previous Saturday, Ian Walsh snapped a winner in the 88th minute. This time Palace cut it even finer.

Let there be no doubt that Palace deserved their point – a point that, when the dust has finally settled in this feverish promotion battle, could be so vital. They pitched everything and almost everyone into getting that goal in the second half, even at the risk

of leaving themselves exposed to Leicester’s counter. And that was some risk in the face of a Leicester front line full of verve and tenacity. Leicester’s team made Palace look old. They had seven teenagers in their 12, including the talented David Buchanan, still a 16-year-old apprentice. And how well they battled. A gripping game was sparked by an uncharacteristic error by Palace goalkeeper John Burridge in the 11th minute. Instead of holding Tommy Williams’ cross from the right, he punched clear but only into the path of Bobby Smith who rattled in a fine shot from the edge of the box before Burridge could even begin to recover. By his standards Burridge had a poor game. The hard-running Leicester strikers, Peake, Henderson and Lineker, forced him into a number of other errors, but Burridge still produced flashes of his very best. A daring save from Henderson in the last 10 minutes was exceptional and kept Palace in the game. Goalscorer Smith, one of the few with experience

in the Leicester side, hobbled out of action in the 41st minute, but it was no setback as the youngsters ran even harder. Substitute Vince Hilaire quickly got into the swing of things and was only fractionally offside when he went through to net from Sealy’s prompting. However, Palace battled on and the pressure finally told on Leicester, culminating in Hinshelwood’s equaliser in the nick of time. It was fitting that the defender should get the goal, too. He had played an attacking part in the second half and two of the best shots, whistling inches wide, came from him. Leicester’s Rofe, for retaliation on Swindlehurst, was the game’s third booking. Referee Worrall left to the sound of boos from the home fans in the 16,767 crowd but it was hardly warranted. He had let a fast, action-filled game flow well. ith a place in the play-offs almost a certainty, the Eagles travelled to Manchester City on Monday 1st May. City took an early lead with Ian Wright equalising in the second half and that point kept us in fourth. There was an away visit to Leicester City next. Trailing to a 21st minute goal, David Madden converted two spot kicks to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead but the Foxes equalised right at the death. Palace’s game in hand came at home to Stoke City, and Madden was now entrusted with taking penalties and he duly obliged five minutes from the break, to send us up to third place. Relegated Birmingham City were next, with many of their fans in fancy dress. It required City to lose and Palace to win by five goals to earn automatic promotion. When Wright headed Palace into an early lead it signalled the start of a pitch invasion, with Birmingham fans invading the pitch leading to a 27-minute break in the game. When play restarted, Wright went on to complete his hat-trick and Palace were 4-0 up after thirty minutes and with Bradford City leading Manchester City 1-0 the Eagles were in for automatic promotion with one more goal. Sadly, City equalised so the Eagles now faced Swindon in the play-off semi-finals. Palace faced the Robins first at the County Ground

on the sun drenched afternoon of Sunday 21st May, with the only goal coming early in the second half when Jeff Hopkins deflected a cross past Perry Suckling.

Back under the Selhurst Park lights it was a different matter altogether with a 15-minute delay to the kick off due to the number of spectators getting in. Mark Bright brought parity in the eighth minute, sweeping home a loose ball and Wright volleyed the second home as half time approached with the Robins only bothering Suckling towards the end. Back in 1989 the play-off final was played over two legs, so the Eagles travelled to Blackburn Rovers seven days later. Rovers were on the rampage from the start and Palace found themselves two goals down after 25 minutes, both scored by Howard Gayle. It was a similar scenario in the second half, when twenty minutes from time David Burke brought Gayle down in the penalty area. The Blackburn forward stepped up to take the spot kick but blew his hat-trick chance by firing wide and this gave the Eagles hope and with four minutes left Bright headed down a free kick for Eddie McGoldrick to force over the line. There was a sting in the tail during injury time when Simon Garner restored Blackburn's two-goal advantage.

PALACE

Palace played their 59th game of the season in front of 30,000 fans and things started well with Wright on hand in the 16th minute to prod the ball in to give the Eagles hope early in the second leg against Rovers. With the crowd roaring the team on Rovers were defending desperately but their single goal advantage disappeared two minutes after the break when McGoldrick was pushed in the penalty area. Madden stepped up to take the kick and side-footed home and the game went to extra time. Palace now had the advantage of that away goal so Blackburn had to score and nearly did so until Suckling produced a flying save. Two minutes from the end Wright headed home a McGoldrick cross to signal a pitch invasion and a delay of several minutes. Referee George Courtney saw order restored for the remaining seconds and then the party started for the south Londoners.

WILF WOWS PUPILS WITH RETURN TO PRIMARY SCHOOL Local hero Wilfried Zaha caused a stir at his former primary school when he took part in a special assembly with Palace for Life Foundation. The Palace forward returned to Whitehorse Manor in Thornton Heath, just a short walk from Selhurst Park, to meet hundreds of delighted pupils on the first day of the summer term. Zaha was last at the school 15 years ago, as an 11-year-old pupil and star of the football team. On his return he was given a hero’s welcome, entering the hall to ear-piercing screams and chants of his name. Speaking after the assembly, he said: “It was amazing, seeing so many familiar faces and being back here, a lot has changed, but it’s nice to be back. “When I was last here all I wanted was to be a professional footballer, so to come back here now in this position is just amazing, it feels like a dream.” The assembly was hosted by children’s TV presenter Ben Shires, an ambassador for the Foundation, who ran a Q&A session for the children before leading the entire room through a fun quiz all about Zaha’s career. Head Teacher Nina Achenbach added: “It’s been really wonderful having Wilf back at the school, it has been truly inspirational for everyone. When we’re out playing football in the field, we’re forever telling the children that one day they could be like him, so for them to meet him is just amazing.” Primary Schools Programme Manager at the Foundation, Sam Bacon, said: “Taking players into local schools is one of the most uplifting things we do at the

Foundation, and it doesn’t get much better than taking Wilf Zaha back to his old school! “The reaction from the children was priceless and Wilf passed on some really good advice to them, reminding them to work hard and believe in themselves.”

extra This morning, a team of young refugee players representing Palace for Life took on an Everton side in a friendly game to celebrate Amnesty International’s Football Welcomes weekend and Croydon Voluntary Action’s #WeStandTogether campaign. Both sets of players are with us at Selhurst Park today.

IN FOCUS 71

Ciara Watling

This season has been a challenge, but it was always going to be tough. I think we’ve underachieved somewhat given what we could have done. We didn’t know the league we’d be in until late last summer so we weren’t as prepared as we could have been. That was a disadvantage to us but there are still some positives to take: we’ve developed a different style of play, we’re working on different things, we’ve bonded as a team and learnt how to come out of a block of bad patches. We know we can do better next season, so it’s going to be about pushing up, working harder and really achieving what we know we can. Receiving my international call-up has been the best moment of my career so far. My family is more Northern Irish than English so it was amazing and a very proud moment for me and my family when I got to play as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Georgia. It’s a very big step-up. When I go over to Northern Ireland, it’s training twice a day and then a home game and flying to another country for an away game. With Palace, we train three times a week so when I go there and we’re training 10 times in one week with a game, it’s intense but it’s a lot of learning and a great experience against the best women’s players in the world. I’ve played with and against some great footballers and friends in my time. Away with Northern Ireland, we’re like a family and we all get along. You spend a lot of time together and Freya

PALACE

Holdaway and I are quite close, we’re best friends at Palace. We really get along and it’s good bringing that onto the pitch. I also knew a lot of the squad at Palace from playing together at Charlton and Millwall. I’ve known the likes of Gemma Bryan, Pam McRoberts, Jordan Butler and Ashlee Hincks for about 10 years so we’re all very close. Finding a work-life-football balance isn’t easy. Balancing everything is really hard: I’m constantly either working or playing football because being a women’s footballer is literally an 8am-11pm job. Thankfully I run my own company so I can work anywhere as long as I’ve got my laptop. My husband and I set up a business that runs football for girls aged 3-19-year-olds. My main job is the business side of things but I also coach the academy girls’ football team. We play once a week and train three times. I join in sometimes! My other business is a school coaching company, All Sports. I like working with the girls as a coach and role model. Sometimes they say stuff like: ‘oh my God, I saw so-and-so’ and I think, ‘I play against them!’ It’s really important for them to have role models. I see some girls and think: ‘you’re so talented; I wish I was that good when I was your age.’ It’s so good for them to have someone to look up to, to talk to or even to see on social media and think that that’s what they want to be like.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2 CRYSTAL PALACE 0 Wednesday 3rd April 2019

Palace fell 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in their new stadium with goals from Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen. After 55 minutes of Lilywhites probing, it finally came to fruition with Son finding himself one-on-one with James Tomkins, before cutting inside the defender, taking it away from the rushing-back Cheikhou Kouyaté, and the resulting shot from the South Korean deflecting, unfortunately, into the back of Vicente Guaita’s net. As Palace looked to maintain their 100% record in wearing their home kit in away games this season,

Roy Hodgson sent Andros Townsend and Christian Benteke out to warm up - Townsend was the first of the aforementioned duo to enter the pitch against his former club, replacing Jeffrey Schlupp in the 79th minute. A minute later, however, Palace found themselves 2-0 down as Harry Kane bundled his way through the penalty area and after a couple of falls and blocks, the ball found its way to Eriksen who smashed home from close range. Despite a flurry of opportunities in the final stages it wasn’t meant to be for Palace with Spurs winning 2-0.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 0 crystal palace 1 Saturday 6th April 2019

In a clash almost as tight as the gap between Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, the Eagles stole three points to put a clear and encouraging 11 points between them and the relegation zone. It came with a win in truly trademark fashion as the south Londoners, away from home, broke against an offensive side to earn a penalty through Wilfried Zaha which, naturally, Luka Milivojevic converted. If it were ever possible to write a script for a Crystal Palace win, this is precisely how it would read.

With just 10 minutes of normal time remaining, Palace finally broke the deadlock. After an imperious Aaron WanBissaka challenge, substitute Christian Benteke threaded the ball to Zaha who, head down, burst in recognisable fashion toward the Newcastle box. Unable to deal with his driving pace, Yedlin brought the Ivorian winger down and, without hesitation, Atwell pointed to the spot. With Milivojevic on the pitch, the action effectively awarded a conversion and, as he does so well, the Serbian struck home from 12 yards as is his speciality.
