AS THIS CLUB SHOWED IN 2016 WE ARE MORE THAN CAPABLE OF ENJOYING A LENGTHY RUN WHICH COULD EVEN TAKE US TO WEMBLEY AGAIN
THE MANAGER 05
start the year on the right note Happy new year to all Palace fans, and I hope that over the course of the next 12 months we can give you plenty to celebrate.
We are coming to the end of a period that has seen us play nine games in just 36 days, but it is one that has brought us some fond memories. Successive home wins against Burnley and Leicester City came at just the right time, and helped us build some momentum going into the trip to Manchester City. We always believed we could get a result up there if we played to our strengths and enjoyed a bit of luck, and that is exactly what happened. It was a result that got the whole football world talking and acknowledging us, which was a nice way to head into Christmas. We desperately wanted to follow that up with a third straight home win against Cardiff City on Boxing Day, but unlike the Burnley game where we created a huge number of chances and managed to convert a couple, we endured one of those days where the ball just didn’t seem to want to cross the line. However, four points from the games against City and Cardiff wasn’t a bad return, and although we went down to a single-goal defeat against an excellent Chelsea side, we headed into 2019 with breathing space from the drop zone and the opportunity to push further up the table. Wednesday night saw us head to Wolves and we gave an excellent display to claim another important away win and start the year on the right note. We left it late, but I was delighted to see the players keep going right until the end. Fatigue could have been an issue after so many games in quick succession, but
PALACE

they showed real determination to persevere and find the net twice to record the victory their performance so richly deserved. Today sees the start of our FA Cup campaign and the visit of Grimsby Town, which after a congested series of league fixtures gives us the chance to refresh the side a little, hand some players who have played a lot of games recently the chance to rest, and allow us to give others an opportunity to showcase their talents after waiting so patiently for that moment to arrive. I would also like to welcome Michael Jolley, his staff, the players and all connected with Grimsby here today. We will of course be taking the competition seriously. As this club showed in 2016 we are more than capable of enjoying a lengthy run which could even take us to Wembley again. However, that journey starts today and we will not be taking Grimsby any more lightly than any of our Premier League opponents. They have been in good form of late and have strung together some good results, so will come here with confidence backed by a large travelling contingent. Therefore, we have to be professional and avoid any complacency to ensure a safe passage into the fourth round to kick off the new year here at Selhurst Park in the best possible fashion. Enjoy the game!
THE WIN AT MOLINEUX WAS THE PERFECT WAY TO START THE YEAR; LAST YEAR WE DID THE SAME AGAINST SOUTHAMPTON AND THAT WAS A MASSIVE BOOST FOR US
THE CAPTAIN 07
do something big in the FA Cup I would like to wish all Palace fans a happy new year, and I hope that our matches over Christmas have given you plenty of hope for 2019.
They started with the win against Manchester City which was one of my favourite wins as a Palace player because they are probably the hardest team to beat. Usually you don’t get the chance to play a lot or have a lot of possession against them but we went there, scored three goals and got the three points. Post-match was an amazing feeling and the confidence gained from that has flown into the next few games. I was so pleased with the way we played against Cardiff; we had more 30 shots at the goal, hit the post a couple of times but we didn’t get the goal to finish the game off. From my point of view, if you create a lot of chances and don’t win then it’s just bad luck as we played really good. We then had to play Chelsea a few days later and came up against a team who played very well. We didn’t create a lot and it was a hard day for us, but we had the chance to put things right against Wolves on Wednesday. The win at Molineux was the perfect way to start the year; last year we did the same against Southampton and that was a massive boost for us so hopefully it will be the same. Now we have a break from the league where we can rest a little bit. Last season I found this time of year really tough, but this season was a little bit easier as we had two days to recover after the Chelsea game, where we had only one last season. That makes a massive difference, and I’m feeling good and fit. I’m also pleased to be scoring plenty of goals, but
PALACE
v
GRIMSBY TOWN
I have had a lot of penalties and most of those came after people fouled Wilfried. I may score the goals, but they are because he gets fouled so much, and it’s so good to have him in our team because he has very good feet and is very dangerous in the box. Today we face a very different opponent in Grimsby, and we need to score as quickly as possible because the longer the game is level, we will feel more pressure. We are expected to win easily but no game in this country is easy, even ones against an opponent two or three leagues below us, but we are looking forward to it. We expect a lot from the FA Cup this season. We had a good chance in the Carabao Cup so we will be focussed and play with the best that we have, and I think we have a chance. A lot of the boys got to the final in 2016 and that was a very big achievement, and I cannot say that we will definitely get to the final but I want us to try and do something big in the FA Cup this season. Make some noise!

hope you have a memorable day Happy new year to everyone here at Selhurst Park today, and welcome to the supporters, staff and players of Grimsby Town – it’s great to host you for this FA Cup match in south London.
It’s nice to switch our attention to this special competition where we’ve enjoyed some of our finest moments as a club. We have of course reached the final on two occasions only to finish runners-up both times, so the memories I have, and I’m sure you share, are somewhat bittersweet. The original final against Manchester United in 1990 along with the amazing 4-3 semi-final success against Liverpool were two of the most exciting games in the history of the famous competition. It’s still hard to take when I watch the 1990 final as we were so, so close. It did though announce a certain Ian Wright onto the world stage; what an impact from the substitute! The journey to that final was relatively low key Portsmouth, Huddersfield Town and Rochdale all at home followed by Cambridge United away in the quarter-finals before that epic win over Liverpool at Villa Park, which understandably Brighty still talks about! Fast-forward to 2016, by which time I had been chairman for six years, and our journey to the final was far tougher. We beat Southampton away, Stoke City at home, Tottenham Hotspur and Reading away and then Watford in the semi-final at Wembley. United would once again break our hearts by winning 2-1 despite us taking the lead through Jason Puncheon, but everything about that day will live with me forever. The FA Cup remains the best domestic cup competition in the world, and it’s the trophy supporters of all clubs dream of winning. To be that close twice

with Palace just makes me want it more, so we begin this journey like all fans of the 63 other clubs today wondering if this could be the year. Grimsby supporters have come out in their thousands, which I’m sure will make for a vibrant atmosphere under the lights this evening. As we chose to open up ticket access to non-members, it’s also a great opportunity for us to welcome new football fans to Selhurst Park. There are more than a thousand of you sat in our home stands today on your first visit to Selhurst Park, and I hope you have a memorable day and that it becomes the first of many. Turning attention back to league matters for a moment, to take seven points from Manchester City, Cardiff City, Chelsea and Wolves was a good return from the Christmas and New Year fixtures, and we have secured three points more than this stage of the season last year after 21 league games. As we all know, every point is precious and hopefully we can build upon our final position of 11th last term in the final five months of the campaign. Up The Palace!
10 TODAY'S GAME
Crystal Palace v Grimsby Town // Saturday 5th January // Selhurst Park
Today's game Palace kick off their latest FA Cup campaign with a third round tie with Grimsby Town, in what is the first meeting of the sides since the Eagles recorded a convincing 4-1 success at Blundell Park in April 2003. That marked a spiral of decline for the Mariners who fell from the second tier to the National League in just seven years, and it would take them until 2016’s National League play-off final success against Forest Green Rovers to return to the Football League where they have battled against the drop from League Two ever since. However, a recent upturn in fortunes last month saw the club claim four wins from five matches to surge up the table, and ex-Eagles youth coach Michael Jolley may well now be hoping his side can be an outside bet for a play-off spot come May, despite losing at home to Mansfield Town on New Year’s Day. December also saw a 2-0 second round success over Chesterfield, having dispatched Milton Keynes Dons in the first round, to seal only Grimsby’s second appearance at this stage since that last encounter with Palace nearly 16 years ago. A healthy contingent from Cleethorpes will head to SE25 hoping to witness some cup magic this teatime, but Roy Hodgson will be hoping that his team can safely move into round four and start another adventure to the final, as they did in 1990 and 2016.
Luka Milivojevic has four goals in his last seven games for Palace, more than he had netted in his previous 22 outings.

The last five matches between Palace and Grimsby have seen 23 scored, and since 1995 there have been an average of 3.3 per fixture! Here we look back on five high-scoring affairs in that time.

An 11-minute hat-trick by Dougie Freedman would be the highlight of this clash as Palace romped into a five-goal lead within 38 minutes on a memorable afternoon in SE25. The rout began when David Hopkin hurled in a long throw which Freedman smashed in on the volley, and 10 minutes later the same thing happened when another Hopkin throw caused issues and the striker stabbed in his second. 60 seconds later Freedman completed his third hat-trick for the club when he tidied up after George Ndah headed a Mark Edworthy cross against the bar, and further strikes from Hopkin and Ray Houghton would wrap up the win with just under an hour still to play.
Town took a surprise lead on 11 minutes through Paul Groves, but two minutes before the break an excellent turn and shot by Lee Bradbury was saved but allowed Clinton Morrison to tap in the rebound, and then a minute later he powered home a header from a corner. Half-time failed to dampen Steve Coppell’s team’s momentum, and moments after the second half got underway a swift counter-attack allowed Hayden Mullins the chance to go through on goal and tuck the ball under Aiden Davison to clinch all three points.

Palace managed to score three goals in three minutes either side of half-time to stun Grimsby and turn this Division One encounter on its head.
18.09.2001
Palace ended Lennie Lawrence’s high-flying side’s fine start to the campaign in excellent fashion as they bounced back from three straight defeats. American international Jovan Kirovski put Steve Bruce’s men in front on 32 minutes when he tucked home a Jamie Smith cross for his first Palace goal, and Tony Popovic headed in the second six minutes later after Dean Austin’s effort had hit the crossbar following Simon Rodger’s free-kick. After the break Palace were in complete command, and Freedman added goals in the 51st and 65th minutes before Clinton Morrison rounded off the scoring in injury time when he finally got on the scoresheet after hitting the post twice.

Gaining revenge for that thumping, Grimsby netted five goals at the Eagles’ expense for the first time ever and dent Trevor Francis’ team’s promotion chances in the process. The hosts took a 31st-minute lead when defender Andy Todd left Matt Clarke helpless with a superb shot into the top corner, and quickfire strikes from Michael Boulding and Bradley Allen just before half-time virtually ended the game as a contest. Palace’s misery continued when Curtis Fleming turned Danny Butterfield’s cross into his own net in the 57th minute, and despite them pulling two goals back through a Julian Gray freekick and Morrison, Grimsby’s memorable afternoon was capped when David Smith completed the scoring with two minutes left. The last meeting between the teams saw Palace put another nail in the Mariners’ coffin, as they battled in vain to beat the Division One drop, by thrashing their hosts at Blundell Park. The damage was done in the first half thanks to an 18th minute opener from Wayne Routledge before two goals in three minutes from Noel Whelan and Gray earned Francis’ men an almost unassailable lead at the break. Steve Chettle’s 48th-minute header gave the home side hope but the Eagles maintained their composure and Freedman added a fourth at the death to leave the Mariners rock-bottom of the table with just four games remaining as they began their slide down the divisions.

126 SEASONS IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The manager The former Palace academy coach returns to Selhurst Park today, having started his coaching career at the Eagles in 2005. He would gradually work his way up the ladder before being handed a chance to manage Burnley’s under-23 side in 2014, where he spent three years until he was offered the manager’s job at Swedish top-flight club Eskilstuna. Jolley spent six months there before earning his first Football League job at Grimsby in March 2018 and he helped them beat the drop by picking up 15 points from the final 10 games.
Club legend The Mariners’ record appearance maker featured 754 times for the club during his 20-year playing career which was spent exclusively at Blundell Park, making him one of only 17 players in Football League history to play over 600 times for a single club. The record-breaking run began in 1987 when the right-back debuted for Grimsby, and he would enjoy plenty of success in Cleethorpes by winning promotion three times to reach the second tier towards the turn of the millennium, as well as lifting the Football League Trophy in 1998.

Things you didn't know... ABOUT GRIMSBY TOWN
s r e t a W s i r Ch By
Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Grimsby Town.
The club was founded as Grimsby Pelham in 1878 after a meeting at the Wellington Arms pub in Grimsby when members of Worsley Cricket Club wanted a sport to occupy them in the winter months. Pelham was the family name of the Earl of Yarborough who was a large local landowner at the time, but their name was dropped a year later. The club eventually settled at Blundell Park in 1899, a ground famously situated in Cleethorpes rather than Grimsby itself.
The Mariners have won more English Football League games on Good Friday than anyone else, a remarkable 40 times. The last Good Friday game did not add to this quirky record, as Town had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Stevenage in March 2018.
Incredibly, it’s not Manchester United who hold the record attendance at Old Trafford. In fact, it is Grimsby when 76,962 spectators packed into the ground for an FA Cup semi-final in 1939 against Wolves. Unfortunately, the Mariners lost the game 5-0 after goalkeeper George Moulson was injured early in the match. With the rules back then not allowing substitutes, Grimsby had to play the majority of the game with 10 men and an outfield player in goal.
PALACE
v
GRIMSBY TOWN
CHRIS WATERS 29
Not satisfied with just the highest attendance, Grimsby also hold the record for the lowest firstteam crowd at the Theatre of Dreams too. They played an FA Cup first round second replay there in 1964 against Barrow, attracting just 9,282 spectators, a record that has never been broken.
The Mariners were the first team in English football to appoint a foreign manager when Hungarian Elemer Berkessy was hired in 1954. After a playing career that included Ferencvaros, RC Paris and Barcelona, the Magyar international moved into coaching in his homeland with Ferencvaros before managing abroad at the likes of Vicenza and Real Zaragoza. Berkessy succeeded a certain Bill Shankly at Blundell Park, who was to make his name elsewhere.
In January 1977 Grimsby were playing at Selhurst Park in a Third Division fixture but were not allowed to play in their classic black and white striped shirts, as it was deemed that they were indistinguishable from Palace’s striped kits on black and white television! The Eagles won 2-1 and were promoted to the second tier at the end of the campaign.
Mariners fans are famous for their inflatable support away from home. The craze started back in 1989 when the then-Fourth Division club were away at top-flight Wimbledon in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and the away supporters brought thousands of inflatable haddocks. After an incident involving an inflatable shark and a Barnet steward, the Bees banned inflatables for the 2017 fixture at The Hive, so the Grimsby fans paid for a mariachi band to accompany them in the stands instead!

100 Years of the Crystal Palace Programme
1976 -1980
36 PROGRAMME HISTORY
1976/77
1977/78 The programme continued in similar fashion to the previous season, and the only alteration to the front cover was the increased use of colour and the rotation of three photographs from the previous Third Division campaign. At
this point it was edited by Tony Shaw. The content was also basically the same as the previous campaign but with one notable change as the first two pages were mostly taken up with a piece by a new manager titled ‘Terry Venables Talking’. As the season progressed into February the word ‘Talking’ was dropped and this was followed by the layout being reconfigured to include a half-page advert for Pontins Holidays; one of only two adverts throughout with the other being for Philips placed alongside the team lineups on the back page. Each issue contained a numbered voucher that could be cut out and stuck to a grid that was included in the programme for the game against Sheffield Wednesday in April. A completed grid could then be entered into a draw for the chance to win one of six prizes, the top one being two Main Stand season tickets for the following season.
For only the second time an oblong size of 17cms x 24cms was utilised but the 16 pages remained the same price at 15p, and the output was good enough to be awarded the Second Division’s programme of the year accolade. Page two showed a picture from a previous game and on the opposite side Venables gave ‘My View’. The fourth page was headed ‘Scene Two’ giving Second Division news and included a small crossword that was followed by a profile of a Palace player in a question and answer format. Pages six and seven were given over to the day’s visitors and the centre headed ‘Palace in the Picture’ contained action shots taken by current club photographer Neil Everitt which was his first season in that capacity. ‘Palace Guard’, ‘Off The Park’, the statistics section and ‘All-Time Team’ filled the rest of the programme which were swapped around during the season, the remaining page featuring an interview with an employee, supporter or personality. Line-ups remained in the usual place on the back page.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 37
1978/79
1979/80
Ahead of this promotion campaign, the look of the programme was altered once more as it reverted to a more standard 21cm x 15cm size, but the addition of eight extra pages would see the price jump to 25p. The front and back cover incorporated a photo from the previous season with three different shots being rotated, and for the final two home games two were utilised. With the line-ups being unable to appear on the back due to the extended picture, which were moved inside to page 16 and titled ‘Teamcheck’. The programme contained the regular features, one or two of which were expanded and given slightly different titles. ‘Scene Two’ became ‘Second Scene’ and ‘All-Time Team’ became ‘Memories of the Palace’ which looked back at a previous season, and there was an addition in ‘Supporter’s Desk’. The increased page count allowed two to be given over to adverts for mainly Philips and Sainsbury’s, the latter carrying a note that their superstore at the ground would open in 1980. Once again an award-winning programme was on the cards.
The phrase “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” applied to the Palace programme following top-flight promotion, which saw no change to its price or number of pages. A similar cover design was maintained but the line-ups returned to the back cover contained in a box in the bottom half. Inside, following on from Venables’ views came three pages on that fixture’s visitors and to help with the flow the historical section by Nigel Sands was moved next to this titled ‘Past Encounters’. ‘Second Scene’ gave way to ‘London Scene’ and an addition was a feature on the club’s junior players. There was an expanded statistics section spread over three pages giving full details of first-team, reserves and juniors fixtures and results, together with articles for supporters, such as ‘Palace Guard’ and ‘Palace Off The Park’. Philips and Sainsbury’s were again the only adverts, although the superstore now suggested they were now not opening until 1981. A high standard was again maintained that saw the publication named runner-up in the Programme of the Year voting.
