THE SUPPORT WE GET FROM OUR LOYAL AND PROUD FANS IS GOING TO BE AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN SEEING THE CLUB OVER THE LINE FOR ANOTHER SEASON IN THE TOP FLIGHT

THE MANAGER 05

face the run-in with confidence There can be only one way to begin my programme notes today and that is by passing on my most sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Damary Dawkins.

We had the great pleasure of meeting Damary recently when he made a visit to the training ground, and I speak for the whole of the club when I say that everyone was deeply saddened to hear that he had lost his brave fight against leukaemia. We applaud the efforts that he and his family are making in their attempt to bring attention to the need for more support for the many sufferers of this awful disease. Raheem Sterling has been outstanding in his support for Damary and it was touching to see the t-shirt he wore under his England shirt at the game against Czech Republic at Wembley a week ago. As someone whom I know and have worked with, I am proud of his efforts to bring awareness to not only Damary’s cause but also to the need to wipe out any traces of racism in football. Recent events both here and abroad have highlighted that the fight to remove racial prejudice is still ongoing. He will have strong backing from all of us here at Crystal Palace F.C. Back to today’s game against Huddersfield and I wish to welcome Jan Siewert, his team and staff and all travelling board members and fans. Anyone who believes that it will be an easy game today because of their unfortunate table position is going to be deluding themselves and we are preparing for a tough encounter this afternoon in what is a crucial game for us at this business end of the season. Despite two narrow and bitterly disappointing results in our

PALACE

v

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

previous two games we know that we have the quality and determination to survive in the Premier League and we have eight games to prove it, starting today. Hopefully, I shall have a fully fit squad to choose from and the competition which we have for places should enable us to face the run-in with confidence. The support we get from our loyal and proud fans is going to be an important factor in seeing the club over the line for another season in the top flight. Please get behind the lads today and we shall do our best to make your encouragement count and send you home happy. Enjoy the game!

EVEN AFTER TWO PAINFUL DEFEATS, WE KNOW HOW TO COME BACK AND MAKE THINGS BETTER AND THAT IS OUR AIM AS WE MOVE ON

THE CAPTAIN 07

we know we can beat them We understand that the last two results are not good enough, but this is a great dressing room and we will do everything we can to finish the season strongly, starting with today’s game against Huddersfield Town.

It's been a shame to lose two games in a row recently, especially after we had managed to earn four wins from six matches previously. The Brighton & Hove Albion defeat was particularly painful, as we wanted to defeat the rival for our fans; every defeat hurts but this one hurt even more as it was at Selhurst Park against a fierce rival and we expected more of ourselves. We had big hope in the FA Cup quarter-final against Watford, too, and all the players wanted to get the fans to Wembley – it would’ve been a special moment in our careers and for all involved with Palace. Away from us, though, it would have been that extra bit rewarding to provide you all with that trip and that match at the close of another season in which you have given us an added boost. However, it wasn’t our day and it was a shame it was so close to the Brighton defeat but we have experience and we know how to deal with all situations that are tough. Even after two painful defeats, we know how to come back and make things better and that is our aim as we move on. As ever, we will be trying our best for the last eight games of the Premier League season as we want to finish as high as possible in the table. It is a big week for us with Huddersfield, then Tottenham Hotspur and, finally, Newcastle United next weekend and that provides plenty of chances to get some points and momentum for the final months. In terms of overcoming recent results and working on improving those, most of the things we

PALACE

v

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

did approaching this week have been very similar as we believe in what we are doing. The only change has been in our preparation for the opponent because Huddersfield play a different way to Brighton, so like normal the coaching staff have prepared us for that during this week and we feel ready to give the fans something to cheer about after a good few days of training after the international break. Like every team in this league, Huddersfield will be bringing a challenge for us today. They are battling for points and their performances have deserved greater results but we have already won away at their ground with Wilf’s great goal earlier in the season, so we know we can beat them and keep clean sheets, too; the guys are up for the 90 minutes! We have four home games left, and we finished last season at Selhurst Park strongly, so we have been speaking of those games and those moments and we believe we can make our home a place teams will not like to come. Make some noise!

RESULTS AT SELHURST PARK THIS SEASON HAVE NOT YIELDED ENOUGH POINTS, AND I CAN UNDERSTAND HOW FRUSTRATING THAT MUST HAVE BEEN AT TIMES FOR YOU AS LOYAL SUPPORTERS.

THE CHAIRMAN 09

will have to be up for the fight Welcome to everyone associated with Huddersfield Town to Selhurst Park today, and welcome as always to each and every Palace supporter.

After the huge disappointment of our losses to Brighton in the league and Watford in the FA Cup, the international break has given us all a chance to lick our wounds as we now find ourselves entering the final six weeks of the season with plenty to play for. We are approaching three games in only eight days, and as I’ve said before, we are intent on looking up and not down the table. There is no reason why we can’t go one better and top our achievement of finishing 11th last season. Today’s visitors were extremely unlucky not to get a result last time out against West Ham United, and our match in September was an intense and closely fought affair. There is no such thing as an easy game in this league, so Roy’s team will have to be completely up for the fight today, with your full support, for us to get a result. It will be a privilege for the club, players, staff and supporters to be involved in the first game at Tottenham Hotspur’s magnificent new stadium. It looks absolutely sensational and I can’t wait to see it for myself on Wednesday. We will of course be doing our best to slightly spoil the day if we can and come back with some points. It was immensely sad to hear the news that Damary Dawkins passed away. Damary used to play for one of our Foundation development teams, and earlier this season visited the training ground to meet Roy and the players as we tried to help the

PALACE

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

thirteen-year-old find a donor for his rare bone marrow condition. Everyone at the club is so sorry for his family and friends, and our thoughts are with them. I have acknowledged previously in these notes that results at Selhurst Park this season have not yielded enough points, and I can understand how frustrating that must have been at times for you as loyal supporters. Roy and the players are acutely aware of it, but now is the time to rally round as a club and throw your support behind the team, even if at times things aren’t going to plan on the pitch. Thank you for your continued support. Up The Palace!

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Huddersfield Town // Saturday 30th March // Selhurst Park

Today's game Crystal Palace host Huddersfield Town today for the 45th clash between the two sides, with Palace edging the head-to-head with 15 wins to 12 victories for today’s opponents. In their last Premier League clash at Selhurst Park, the Terriers defeated Palace 3-0. However, more recently than that, the Eagles knocked Huddersfield out of the League Cup in south London thanks to Bakary Sako notching the only goal of the game. Forty-three percent of the Terriers’ points this season have come on the road, whist the Eagles have managed just three victories in the league at home - Jan Siewert will be hoping that he avoids becoming the first permanent Premier League manager to lose his first five away games in the competition since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge at Cardiff City. However, what gives Roy Hodgson’s men the edge is their far superior goal difference of -5 compared to Huddersfield’s -39. Hodgson has won three games in all competitions against Huddersfield as Eagles boss – only against Leicester City (4) has he won more with Palace. Furthermore, club captain, Luka Milivojevic, has scored 45% of Crystal Palace’s home Premier League goals this season.

Luka Milivojevic has topped the charts for number of completed passes for Palace’s last three Premier League games.

FORMER PALACE ‘KEEPER JOHN SMOUT PASSES AWAY AGED 77 PALACE BACKS PREMIER LEAGUE’S NO ROOM FOR RACISM CAMPAIGN The Premier League is today launching the No Room for Racism campaign, demonstrating its continued commitment to equality and diversity and using the power and popularity of the league to oppose racism in football. This is an initiative that Crystal Palace wholeheartedly supports - as a club situated in the heart of south London, a wonderfully diverse community surrounds Selhurst Park and that is one of the many reasons that make this club so special. Everyone attending or taking part in a football match has the right to feel safe, valued and included and we encourage supporters to continue to play their part in this. If you witness racist behaviour at a match or around a stadium, please report it to the police or a steward. You can also report racism by using the Kick It Out reporting app or website or alternatively texting Palace's antisocial behaviour number: +44 7507 477 669

Former Crystal Palace and Exeter City goalkeeper John Smout recently passed away aged 77. John joined Palace in 1965 aged 23 and was the side's third-choice goalkeeper, covering John Jackson and Tony Millington as he featured regularly in the reserve and London Challenge Cup teams. His only first team opportunity came on 4th December 1965 when Palace faced Cardiff City in a Division Two fixture at Selhurst Park. With both Millington and Jackson unable to play through injury or illness John was selected for the first XI. He suffered a knee in the ribs in the first half and following a diving save at the foot of a Cardiff player in the fifty-fourth minute had to be stretchered off the field. In those days where substitutes were not available, Brian Whitehouse went in goal for the remainder of the game ending in a 0-0 draw. In the summer of 1966 John joined Exeter City for the next two seasons before returning to his hometown club of Newtown in Wales where he then became player-coach. The club's thoughts are with his family, relations and friends at this sad time.

" HONESTLY, I WATCH VIDEOS OF GOALKEEPERS; I TRY TO SCOUT GOALKEEPERS. BUT IN THE END I THINK IT ALL DEPENDS ON ME"

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC 17

ou will hear Luka Milivojevic down at Crystal Palace’s training ground before you see the Eagles captain, such is the Serbian’s gregariousness, and larger than life personality. Highfiving the staff and laughing with his teammates, the midfielder has time for all those associated with his club. It is these traits that showcase what Luka has become - a captain who takes his role incredibly seriously, from various and regular media duties to making sure the canteen staff feel as valued and important as any of his fellow players. A few words with Julián Speroni, a brief (but clearly amusing) chat with Pape Souaré before heading through to the changing rooms for the first training session of the week, ahead of today’s Premier League clash with Huddersfield Town. The man seen upstairs in the canteen, however, is clearly a different one from that which Palace fans quickly grew to love on the football pitch; a nononsense leader and penalty-scoring machine. Into his third year with Palace, you would be forgiven for thinking that the former Anderlecht midfielder would have tired from all the penalty chat. But the very mention of the ‘p-word’ sparks a

Y

glint in his eye and what follows is a fascinating insight into the art that is taking a penalty – because that is exactly how Luka, and all top class spot-kick takers, see penalty-taking as: an art form. “In the beginning, I think, everyone likes to try and shoot in some unique way, to have their own style, but when you’re older and you’re experienced, you know what works,” he said. “Penalties in my experience are not, as people say, like a lottery; it is not a lottery – it is a lot of focus, concentration, quality and technique; penalties are now such a big part of football today. “When you’re older, you see what is more important and when you get a chance to score a penalty, you have more experience, you are calmer and that is something that comes with age.” It is perhaps only after speaking with one of its finest craftsmen that you truly realise the skill behind taking a successful penalty and understand why Palace’s talisman has scored more from 12-yards than any other player since his Premier League debut against Stoke City back in February 2017. “Honestly, I watch videos of goalkeepers; I try to scout goalkeepers. But in the end I think it all depends on me: how I shoot – the goalkeeper has no chance if I shoot how I want and where I want. However, it is not always easy, especially in the last 10-15 minutes of a game when you’re getting tired and you want to keep focused. “I think today that football penalties have become like mind games.” But do not consider that for even one second Palace get ‘lucky’ or ‘have the rub of the green’ because to do that is to water down the impact of Luka’s teammates and Roy Hodgson’s tactical approach, according to the Serbian. “What is true is that we have a lot of penalties but we deserve them because we try and move the ball around the box, because you can’t get a penalty out of the box. And that means we have a lot of skilful players who receive the ball in the box, which is very hard to defend

18 LUKA MILIVOJEVIC

against, especially in the Premier League. And that is why we have a lot, it has nothing to do with luck!” If you can be positively obsessed with something, then it is fair to say Luka is just that when it comes to taking penalties. So obsessed is the Eagles captain that he has no time to focus on anything other than his own precision from 12-yards, with the 27-year-old revealing that he did not see Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s ‘not once looking at the ball’ technique that took social media by storm after the Gabon striker slotted home against Manchester United. “I didn’t see that penalty but every single player has his own technique to shoot, and if he is scoring the goals then that means his technique is really successful and in the end that is the most important.” In revealing that he had not seen the penalty from the Gunners man, Luka - perhaps unintentionally - uncovered more about Milivojevic 'the man' than he did about the footballer which Selhurst Park has come to know and love, hinting at a life seen only away from weekly all-action, blood and thunder 90-minute matches. “Work-life balance is a must! It is not good if you just care about football! I think every single player needs to have a ‘filter’ to relax his body but also his mind; if you can find that balance you will reach the level of football you’re looking for. “I think it is very important for footballers to have a nice life, and to not think only about football because that is not good. “I try, when I can, when time allows me to, to go out for dinner with my wife, with my friends but of course you need to find a good day, good timing. “Outside of football my life is very calm, I spend most of it at home; I am very good friends with Aleksander Mitrovic from Fulham and we always like to try new restaurants when we get a chance. “My life has changed a lot in three years because I now have children, so when I come back home from training I don’t have a lot of time to spend in restaurants or coffee shops.”

" WORK-LIFE BALANCE IS A MUST! IT IS NOT GOOD IF YOU JUST CARE ABOUT FOOTBALL!"

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC 21

" I COME HERE, I ADAPT, I ENJOY THIS TWO AND A BIT YEARS; I AM SO PLEASED THAT I AM PART OF PALACE"

Though life off the pitch may have changed for Milivojevic with the arrival of his children and the move from Greek champions, Olympiakos, it has also changed on it, too, with the Serbian in his determination and professionalism always seeking to adapt his game for the better. In three of Palace’s last four games, the Serbian midfielder has made the most passes inside the opposition half – and in the one game (away at Burnley) that Milivojevic didn’t top the pile for that stat, he still made the most passes in the 90 minutes. But according to the man from Kragujevac, we shouldn’t be surprised by his topping of game-high stats we would associate with an out-and-out attacking midfielder or a midfielder with greater creative freedom. “All my career I have played for the teams that are fighting for the title – I played in Serbia for Red Star, we were fighting for the title; we were a top team. “Then I moved to Anderlecht in Belgium, as well we took titles. And then with Olympiakos we took three titles (I didn’t finish the third season but we took three titles). "I played for top teams in their leagues and when I moved to Palace I found a different league with different quality – a higher quality - and I come to the team which is not one of the top six teams in the league. And the team play a different way of football, and in the beginning, let’s say I didn’t ‘like’ but I had to adapt and as soon as I adapted I was ‘in’ – if you don’t adapt then you start to cry! “I come here, I adapt, I enjoy this two and a bit years; I am so pleased that I am part of Palace.” They say that the measure of intelligence is the ability to change, and if we are to believe that, then it is fair to say that Crystal Palace’s midfield engine and creative spark is one clever guy. High-fiving staff, coolly slotting home penalties and leading the Pride of south London stays the same but for Luka Milivojevic, the adaptation continues

2004-2008

100 YEARS OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

PART 18

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

2004/05 The programme continued in a similar vein to the previous season although there was a price increase by 50p to £3 and when an issue of the club paper 'SE25' was included it rose to £4. Again the cover picture was one of Palace fans and the opening page contained a full list of club officials, contacts and honours. In true fashion for this Premiership campaign it continued with the manager’s piece, in this case Iain Dowie, and captain Tony Popovic with ‘Poppa’s Point of View'. Palace’s PA Rob Fox gave his slant on recent matters and a football personality added 'View From The Gantry'. A total of seven pages were given over on various aspects of our opponents and following on were articles by contributors on all matters Palace and football with Alex Warner, brothers Andrew and Dominic Fifield, Chris Waters and Laurie Dahl’s “Walking Down The Holmesdale Road”. The club’s own radio station “Palace Radio” occupied a page and most issues contained a twopage interview with the matchday referee. There was comprehensive coverage of the reserves and juniors and ‘Action Replay’ contained pictures of a recent game.

2005/06 Celebrating the club’s centenary during this campaign this programme is still easily one of the best produced and was acclaimed as the Football League’s 'Programme Of The Season'. Each of the 27 home programmes issued contained an eight-page centre section that could be pulled out and kept separately, recollecting 100 years of Palace history, players and our opponents of that fixture. The front cover carried a sepia print of a notable person, game or team connected with our existence in chronological order Contributors from the previous season were still penning their pieces while there was another view in each issue from a local sports journalist. Seven pages were allocated to the visitors that usually included an interview with a player who had been connected with both clubs thus adding to the history of the Eagles and also one with a present player from our opponents. The last few pages included an expanded statistical section including a detailed overview between Palace and our visitors. Once more there was plenty to read inside, alongside the occasional £4 cost due to the inclusion of the club’s SE25 magazine.

PALACE

v

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29

2006/07

2007/08

For a second season the programme was produced by Greenpark Publishing and maintained a specific design throughout where the top edge of each reading page contained the same picture of Palace fans. A regular font type and size to head each section - giving a clean look - that opened as usual with the views of the manager and captain. This was followed by news from the treatment room and information on the day’s visitors now came to eight pages. There was a tweak to the usual articles as a specific game with our opponents was highlighted, there was a section on Palace ‘Cult Heroes’ while an ‘A to Z’ feature looked at matters connected with the club in alphabetical order. A Palace player also gave his 'All Time XI' with a reason and a few pages were given over for general football views on the Championship and elsewhere. The last two inside pages contained fixture lineups and results that contained a vast amount of detail right down to giving the minute that a player had been substituted, given a card or was unused from the bench – plenty of material for a quiz!

The club’s widening involvement in local matters was noticeable in the programme with a page each given over to the Study Centre and Football In The Community and for our junior supporters there was now a Kids Zone with quizzes and the match mascots had a page to themselves. Throughout the season a new venture was ‘That’s Official’ in which Keith Hackett, now involved with Professional Game and Match Officials Limited, gave his view on the rules and as a former referee. Club player Matt Lawrence penned a column as he was taking an interest in football journalism for when his playing days were over. The visitors section grew to ten pages that included an overview of games between us and our opponents while Alex Warner in 'Freeze Frame' picked on a specific fixture to expand on and its effect on the club. Regular contributors Andrew Fifield and Tom Watt continued with their features while the academy and reserves had match reports on their recent efforts. Again the back page line-ups contained over 30 players amongst whom Victor Moses and Sean Scannell featured.

Fantasy Premier League? Completed it, mate. Cast your minds back to 2004. Tony Blair was Prime Minister, Facebook was a mere seed in the mind of Mark Zuckerburg. NOW That’s What I Call Music was on its 57th edition, whilst Bob Geldof was dusting off the Band Aid lyrics for its 20th anniversary. Football wise, it was the year of Arsenal’s Invincibles and Palace were back in the Premier League under Iain Dowie. Whilst for many Palace fans it would be a year to forget, for one fan – who spoke to James Woodroof - it was quite the opposite.

ANDREW TOMLINS

Meet Andrew Tomlins, a Palace season ticket holder with his father since 1990. A die-hard Eagle, Tomlins has travelled home and away to support the red and blue for three decades, even though his work has led him to live in Sheffield, and now the Midlands. In the summer of 2004, 470,000 football fans were creating their Fantasy Premier League football team. Tomlins, meanwhile, was making a masterpiece. His team - Palace Exile - would go on to do the unthinkable: win the FPL. This conversation with the Palace programme was prompted by an article published in February focusing on this season’s top-ranking Palace fan, James Armstrong. Someone replied to the club’s tweet within 15 minutes of it being posted, saying “Want to know about the #cpfc fan who won it thanks to AJ, Routledge & Boyce?” It was Tomlins. Investigative journalist skills were not required to hunt down the man in question, he leapt into our arms. “Anytime someone wants to talk about this, I’m more than happy to!” Throughout that season, his Fantasy Premier League side would flirt with some bigger names of the time – Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo. But it had a Palace core. “I had Emmerson Boyce, who was new into the team. Wayne Routledge, who had done fantastically in previous season. Then Andy Johnson up front, who ended up scoring 21 goals. I took a punt on all three, all were cheap." Whilst the game remains largely unchanged, it was a simpler time for its managers. Research was done in the pub with his mates, watching Match of the Day or via text messages with fans dotted around the country, not on Twitter or forums. “I’d speak to my mates, text them – right, ‘how’s Scholesy doing? Is he playing further forward, or is he having to cover at the back?’”

Even for mediocre FPL managers, the experience can be exhausting. How many hours were invested in that campaign? “Lots. I’d have a spreadsheet where I was tracking players. I’d plan six gameweeks in advance.” As the season was reaching its climax, Tomlins entered the top 50 in gameweek 27. By gameweek 34, he was in the top 10. Something was happening. In the double gameweek 35, he would agonise over a decision that would ultimately decide his fate: to captain Arsenal’s Robert Pires or United’s Paul Scholes? “I went out in east Dulwich with my mates on a Friday night – deliberating which of the two to captain. A few beers, and most of the conversation later, I plumped for Pires. Arsenal won 7-0 against Everton, he scored 3 goals and got 20-odd points as my captain, Scholes got just four.” That decision catapulted him to second place and that was when the belief started: “Then it got serious, I thought I could do it.” Tomlins was the top ranked manager, 11 points clear, going into final day of the season. He spent that day at the Valley watching his beloved Palace throw away the chance of Premier League survival at the hands of local rivals Charlton Athletic, before the long drive back to Sheffield. “Not only were Palace relegated, the massive concern I had was the guy in second place had Fulham’s Luis Boa Morte in his team. Driving back, I heard Fulham had won 6-0 v Norwich and I thought ‘that’s it; he’ll have a goal or two, and it’ll be over’. “When I got back I took a phone call from a very good friend of mine who’s a Charlton fan. He said ‘shame you went down, but do you realise the results are in and you’ve won the FPL?’ I was quite delighted at that point.” Indeed, Boa Morte had secured just two points despite Fulham’s rout, and Tomlins was Fantasy Premier League champion, four points clear.

An all expenses trip to Liverpool's home ground was a fitting prize, but did he receive a trophy? “No. I made myself a certificate: a print out of the final league table and my final team. I laminated it and stuck it on my desk for a while.” Tomlins plays the game now, but without the same motivation. “Back then, the last thing I thought

about before going to bed was my Fantasy team. Probably the first thing when I woke up, too. The manager Jan Siewert joined Huddersfield Town as the club's new manager in January 2019. The 36-year-old joined the Terriers from German side Borussia Dortmund II, where he held the position of Head Coach, signing a contract running until the end of the 2020/21 season. Following a playing career in Germany with TuS Mayen, SG Bad Breisig and TuS Montabaur, Siewert moved into coaching and gained experience in roles at VfL Bochum, Rot-Weiss Essen as well as at Borussia Dortmund II.

Club legend The striker enjoyed two spells with the club, both as goal-laden as each other, which saw Booth finish with 150 goals for the Terriers (a record that puts him as Huddersfield Town's third highest scorer of all-time. The 452 appearances Booth made for the club across a total of 14 years is the fourth most in Huddersfield Town’s history. During his time with the club, Booth earned international recognition, too, making his debut against Austria U21s - in total Booth scored twice in three appearances for England Under-21s.

£8million was the price Huddersfield paid Manchester City for the 28-year-old after a successful loan spell with the Terriers during their promotion campaign, with Mooy playing in all but one of Huddersfield’s league games. And it has been money well spent, with the Australian's brace against Wolves, in a 2-0 win back in November, one of several personal highlights for Mooy – Huddersfield are the only team to have done the double over Wolves so far this season. Despite only joining the Terriers in the recent January transfer window, the excitement around the English 21-year-old is high. 14 goals for Charlton Athletic during this current campaign was enough for Huddersfield Town to move for the striker, and with three goals in his first six games under Jan Siewert it is already looking like a great bit of business from the Premier League side, with the whole deal potentially costing just £2million including add-ons. 50 CHRIS WATERS

Things you didn't know... ABOUT THE TERRIERS

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town were formed in 1908, as is the case with many clubs, in a pub, named The Albert. With ÂŁ500 raised, the Leeds Road recreation ground was purchased and later that year they played their first game there, beating Bradford Park Avenue 2-1 in front of a 1,000 strong crowd. However, barely four years later, saddled with debt from an Archibald Leitch-designed ground, the club went into liquidation.

Town are synonymous with their blue and white striped shirts, which has been the standard kit since 1916. However, at the beginning of their existence, in their first season they were known as the Scarlet Runners on account of their red shirts and socks. At the end of that season they decided upon blue shirts and white shorts, which gradually morphed to the famous kit we have today.

Town reformed in 1919 but financial strife struck once again. The debts seemed so insurmountable that a merger with rivals Leeds United was mooted, and only stopped at the last minute by an impromptu demonstration by supporters and a concerted funding drive to raise capital. Incredibly, against this backdrop of chaos, the players reached the FA Cup final and were promoted to the First Division the same season.

PALACE

v

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

CHRIS WATERS 51

Much has been written about legendary Town manager, Herbert Chapman; promoted from assistant manager with seven games to go of the 1920/21 campaign, he won four matches to avoid relegation, and went on to win the FA Cup in his first full season at Leeds Road. After winning the league in 1923/24 and 1924/25, Chapman departed for Arsenal, but that did not stop Huddersfield winning another title in 1925/26, becoming the first ever club to win three titles in a row - only Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool have since matched this.

Huddersfield's first league title win was remarkable in many ways. Only five different Town players scored for the club that season, and the league was won on goal average with Huddersfield beating Cardiff’s average by just 0.024 goals! The Bluebirds’ missed penalty in their final game of the season proved to be a killer blow to their title hopes.

Leeds Road was home to the Terriers for 86 years, until 1994. The stadium was demolished to make way for a retail park development, but for those fond of nostalgia, there is a plaque in the car park which marks the exact centre spot of the old pitch.

The nickname Terriers is quite a recent phenomenon, having only been adopted by Town in 1969. Riding high in the Second Division at the time, the club’s Promotion Officer decided that a shiny new image was needed in the event of promotion, which duly arrived. The Yorkshire terrier was chosen as a symbol of Yorkshire grit and determination, and duly appeared on Huddersfield’s crest for a number of years, reappearing on the shirt for this campaign.

Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that saw the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

Story of the

Season Part 6

T

he credentials of the club’s push for promotion would now be tested having to play 14 games in eight weeks and the start of March proved to be crucial. First up was the visit on St. David’s Day of second-placed Cardiff City, who were six points ahead at a time when wins were only worth two points, however Palace had three games in hand. The boisterous Welsh supporters swelled the numbers bringing daffodils and leeks but were soon silenced by a dominant Palace team who were two goals up inside thirty minutes going on to win 3-1. It would be the same XI four days later in the rearranged fixture at leaders Derby County in which a remarkable performance produced a 1-0 victory to inflict the Rams' only home league defeat of the season. Bobby Woodruff netted the vital goal after an hour in a game in which Palace had the ball in the net four more times, all ruled out, and our brave keeper John Jackson suffered a mild concussion remembering little of the second-half. The club remained in the Midlands for the away game at Birmingham the following Saturday where another single goal victory, scored this time by Steve Kember, was sufficient to claim both points. Suddenly within a week the picture had changed dramatically and the fans were now beginning to believe that promotion to the top flight for the first time could happen this season.

A third single goal success, scored by Woodruff, over lowly Bury back at Selhurst Park seven days later earnt a fifth win in six games but with an understandably below par performance. Another catch-up fixture followed on the Wednesday evening: a vital clash against local rivals Millwall with whom we were level on points in fourth place. A pulsating fixture in front of 32,000 spectators saw Palace rip into a 3-0 lead by half-time that included a rocket of a free-kick from Colin Taylor but the Lions roared back with two goals, however Colin Taylor and Mark Lazarus then set up Woodruff to seal the victory and move Palace into second place. There followed two 1-1 draws at Charlton Athletic and a midweek rearranged game at home to

Oxford United when Woodruff broke his collarbone in a somewhat tempestuous affair that allowed Middlesbrough to leapfrog over us. It all changed again with a first ever 2-1 victory at Carlisle United on the last Saturday in March to set up a possible promotion decider with ‘Boro at Selhurst Park on Good Friday as Cardiff and Millwall were now falling away - Derby at the top were still four points clear. A record league crowd of 43,381 crammed themselves in for the 11:00 kick-off with many under the structure of the Arthur Wait Stand that was taking shape. A tense game ended in a goalless draw and the following day Portsmouth were dispatched 3-1 on a very windy afternoon in SE25 when the ball was blown slightly off the penalty spot as skipper John Sewell was about to kick it but his mishit shot still found the net - at the same time Charlton were beating Middlesbrough. A third game in five days on Tuesday evening and the team gained another vital point in a goalless draw at Huddersfield Town and then came a tricky fixture at Preston North End. Once more a resolute performance

garnered a point in another goalless draw but more importantly Boro lost at home to Bury meaning promotion was virtually guaranteed.

You were one of the FA Youth Cup-winning squad before the promotion season. What was it like joining the club at that age? I came from Wales to London and it was something which I found daunting as a 15-year-old but it certainly helped that the majority of the group who joined at the same time. We went through the system at Palace together and the way it worked out was that we all got the move up to the first team at the same time which continued our progression into the senior level. I don’t think there would be another club that looked after us so well as a young bunch of lads. We went into accommodation locally with Palace fans and my host family were fantastic - without that welcome it would have been difficult.

What was it like under Terry Venables? I have got massive respect for him; he hadn’t long finished playing and he was managing a group of young lads who were decent players and he worked at us being able to play well as a group together. As a team we were not a great goalscoring side but defensively we were fantastic and we had the

Your first team debut came in a game against Chester as an 18-year-old, tell us about that. The manager told me the day before the match that I was selected and put the full team up on the wall just after the training session the morning before the game – that helped as we then had time to settle down and get ready for the game. Some who were nervous characters may have liked to be told nearer to the day of the game but at that age you are so naive to everything that all you want to do is play football.

earn that first Welsh cap? It was against the Republic of Ireland and funnily enough that game I’m pretty sure also saw Jerry Murphy make his first start for the Republic . To have the chance to go on was a feeling of immense pride and I know my family loved seeing me representing our country. In there were a few of us getting our international debut at that time and those honours came because of the success of Palace and I must say great credit to Terry Venables for leading us to that level so early in our careers.

knack of getting important results at the right times which kept the momentum going. On that special night in May 1979 against Burnley you scored one of the goals to earn promotion. What is your memory of that night? It was amazing before we even reached the stadium because we had stayed at a local hotel and it was so difficult to get to the ground because there were just so many people outside; the coach just about got us in! The sight when I walked onto the pitch for the first time was unbelievable, the atmosphere was incredible and to this day one of the best I have ever witnessed - I just don’t know how that many people got into the ground that night! As for the goal, it was the best I have ever scored! It was an unbelievable header! Soon after that promotion season you were given your international debut. How proud were you to

elhurst Park should have been renamed Twickenham for Easter Monday’s extraordinary holiday package. There were certainly enough penalties to match a rugby match (writes Dave McClelland). In the time we had reached the fifth penalty John Pemberton must have thought he WAS one of Willie Carling’s place kickers. The Palace defender’s spot kick sailed over the bar, making the perfect conversion! It topped one of the most bizarre spells ever seen in the annals of football. For a sequence which began with a fine penalty take by Mark Bright things got steadily worse as Bright, Ian Wright and then Pemberton missed successive spot kicks. The comedy of it all was only preserved by the fact that Palace came out winners. It would have been no laughing matter if Brighton, with ten men, had taken a point – and they very nearly did. Palace had to hang on for dear life and call on goalkeeper Perry Suckling to earn the victory with a breathless save from Alan Curbishley in the anxious closing minutes. It was a game of surprises almost from the first kick when Bright burst through and just lobbed over the bar in the first 15 seconds.

A memorable goal followed from Wright after 23 minutes. Gary O’Reilly’s long pass down the left released the Palace striker who let fly a stunning left foot shot from 35 yards across the penalty area and into the net at the far post. Top drawer quality. Brighton found a Palace side in rampant mood hard to hold, particularly Eddie McGoldrick, whose pace and teasing skills carved open Brighton’s left flank. Midfielder Mike Trusson over-stepped the mark in the 28th minute, showing his studs in a high challenge on the Palace winger and suffering the red card for serious foul play.

THE GLORY YEARS 61

That was the first of referee Kelvin Morton’s positive decisions – and there were plenty to follow. Brighton plunged deeper into trouble in the 37th minute when defender Larry May climbed all over Bright to begin the penalty caper. The Palace striker, who had netted his first penalty into the previous home match, made no fuss about it by thundering the ball home. But when Dean Wilkins tripped McGoldrick to set up the next penalty, Bright sowed the seed of doubt by seeing his kick this time scrambled away by the desperate John Keeley. Then a crazy five-minute spell saw Paul Wood upend Bright and Mr Morton point very deliberately to the spot for the third time - imagine everyone’s astonishment when Wright crashed his effort against the post. Brighton fought a courageous battle in the second half, encouraged by the results of a fourth penalty in the 52nd minute. This time it was in their favour for

a foul on Garry Nelson, and Alan Curbishley showed just how it should be done by smashing the spot kick high to Suckling’s left. However, Pemberton obviously didn’t take note. His turn came next when the game’s fifth penalty came in the 65th minute after an amazed Ian Chapman was adjudged to have handled. Imagine the hoots of laughter from the Brighton corner when Pemberton blazed high over the bar. The Bury St.Edmunds referee’s busy day was completed by five bookings – Brighton’s Wilkins (inside two minutes) Chivers and the aggrieved Chapman, along with Bright and Suckling, the latter for time wasting. Palace – Suckling, Pemberton, Shaw, Madden, Hopkins, O’Reilly, McGoldrick, Pardew, Bright, Wright, Barber. Sub: Burke for Shaw Brighton – Keeley, Chivers, Dublin, Wilkins, May, Chapman, Nelson, Trusson, Bremner, Curbishley, Wood. Sub: Codner for Wood.

REMEMBERING DAMARY DAWKINS Today we are celebrating the life of Damary Dawkins, a courageous young man who sadly lost his battle with leukaemia at the age of just 13. Damary was a member of our Elite Player Development Centre in Bromley, where he played from the age of seven and was a key player in the squad, always encouraging his teammates and forever with a smile on his face. His coach at the Foundation, Pat Gordon, describes Damary as a dedicated young player who supported his coaches and teammates alike: “Damary was a coach’s dream, he always bounced into training with a smile on his face. He loved showing you his skills and tricks he’d been working on, which showed how dedicated and committed he was to improving as a player. “Damary’s laugh was so infectious that he had both players and coaches in stiches often. He always made new players feel welcome and led by example with his attitude and behaviour. “He always made time to help support others, which helped both coaches and teammates at the club. Damary loved Crystal Palace and we loved him.” Damary had been fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and after three years of intensive chemotherapy, he required a stem cell transplant to stay alive. Despite a match being found and Damary undergoing the transplant, he sadly passed away on Sunday 17th March - six weeks after his 13th birthday. Damary’s father, Tony, was by his son’s side

constantly: “No matter how many years go by, I know I will never forget or get over it. Damary was like my second skin, we went everywhere together and did everything together. “I’m so proud to have a son like him, God could not have given me a better son.” Currently 69 per cent of patients who require a stem cell transplant can find a match from a stranger, but this drops to just 20 per cent for those from a black, Asian or other ethnic minority background. Tony and the family are keen to encourage as many people as possible to join the stem cell registry and help someone suffering from blood cancer: www.dkms.org.uk/en/register-now - they were also supported by the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT). A Go Fund Me page has been set up to support the family at this difficult time: www.gofundme.com/damary-dawkins-campaign

IN FOCUS 71

Jacob Mensah

I’m really proud to have signed for Palace. I haven’t signed just to be comfortable where I am, I want to keep going all the way and putting in the work. What encouraged me to join were the people at the club, who are great. They’re all really helpful and that’s what I like about this club. To feel welcome like that, even as a trialist, is important. This is a nice, family club. It’s somewhere that I want to be. Getting an offer after a trial is tough work. You don’t find out you’re being scouted until they approach you to say you’re being offered a trial. Then it all just explodes: you get told about dates for trials, complete those and, in the meantime, give your all. The trial with Palace was three weeks of hard work and I stayed in Bromley for the duration - coming from Ramsgate every morning would be a bit too much! My teammates are a great group of lads. The players are great and I get on with them all, I haven’t got a bad word to say about any of them. I first met them in my trial and they’re a good group. I’m naturally quite a reserved person anyway so I don’t really speak up much but the team all spoke to me and started getting me into conversations. The team are doing well and play to my style. We’re a footballing team, we like to play and receive the ball from defence, which I thoroughly enjoy. As a defender in non-league, you spend your time kicking

PALACE

v

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

balls long and heading them out. Here, the football involves everyone playing on the floor. I’m a physical and dominant player so if the person I’m marking does one over on me, that will replay in my head and I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again. I’m also pretty vocal - when I get on the pitch, a switch flips and that’s when I do my talking. I played for Ramsgate’s senior team for three years and learnt a lot in that time. I think I got thrown in the deep end because I made my debut at 16 and to go into a men’s team is intimidating. I matured a lot quicker than my peers around me and in football that’s a positive. The older lads didn’t hold back though! When they see an opportunity to get on top of a younger player, they definitely do it. I’d been working as a roofer and I’m now completing coaching courses. On days off, I used to help at my uncle’s roofing business for a bit of cash in hand but I’m not a full-time roofer! I’ve got my coaching Level One and I’m looking to get my coaching Level Two. I’m also currently doing the National Vocational Qualification and I’m going to get that finished in my time here. I think if anything goes wrong in football, you’ve always got to have a back-up plan. If you were to get a serious injury, you can’t just rely on your footballing career - you’ve got to have something as a back-up. It’s crucial. I know that I should have qualifications; you can’t just rely on a footballing career.

burnley 1 CRYSTAL PALACE 3 Saturday 2nd March 2019

Despite Burnley’s opening spell of pressure, Palace’s contentment with sitting back paid off after barely 15 minutes of play when Jeffrey Schlupp raced to the edge of the area and hurled a cross back towards his teammates. To his own detriment, Burnley’s Phil Bardsley stood firmly in its way and the ball cannoned in off his leg. Following the break, Palace burst the second-half into life in the 48th minute when Aaron Wan-Bissaka pressed down the right into Burnley’s half before switching the ball to Michy Batshuayi in the centre of the box. Handed the

chance on a silver platter, the Belgian forward struck home from 12 yards to double the Eagles’ advantage. The third came thanks to the mesmeric feet of Wilfried Zaha, who, having worked his way into Burnley’s box, danced into a shooting position before rifling home. His first - and Palace’s third - ensured the Eagles returned to south London with three points. The win secured, the Eagles did still however give Burnley fans something to cheer when Barnes struck home from close range in the 90th-minute.

76 FINAL SCORE

crystal palace 1 brighton & hove albion 2 Saturday 9th March 2019

Crystal Palace fell to defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion for the second time this season in a frustrating clash in SE25. With Palace on top, it was against the run of play that the visitors netted the game’s opening goal. As James Tomkins failed to connect with a header intended for Vicente Guaita, Glenn Murray raced with the Eagles’ centre-back towards the goal. Deftly stretching out his leg, Murray hit the ball on the volley from the edge of the box past the Spanish ‘keeper.

LINE-UPS

But Palace were determined to not let the visitors extend their lead further and pulled themselves level when Davy Propper brought down Andros Townsend in the Seagulls’ box. Stepping up cool as ever, Milivojevic buried his side’s solitary goal to bring the Eagles firmly back into the game. In a cagey affair where Palace uncharacteristically owned the lion’s share of possession, the visitors won with goals either side of the Milivojevic penalty to claim six points in total from the claws of the Eagles.
