together, we can achieve anything Tonight sees the return of Premier League football to Selhurst Park, and we’ve got a huge test ahead of us in the form of Liverpool who started their season very strongly last weekend.

I couldn’t have been happier with the way we started the season against Fulham. Three points and a clean sheet is a fantastic return from any away game, especially one against a newly-promoted side whose fans created a feverish atmosphere in the early stages which spurred their players on. They made it very difficult for us in the first half-hour, but we weathered the storm and used our experience to keep calm, and then be clinical when the chances came our way. We ended last season by going six games unbeaten, and I’m really pleased that confidence is at the same level as when the players departed for their well-deserved holidays in May. That was epitomised in the way we scored our second goal, as a number of players showed great composure to gradually move the ball from one penalty area to the other to kill the game off. We are going to have to be just as ruthless in front of goal if we are to get something from tonight’s visit of another of my former clubs. Jurgen’s team were hugely impressive in their opening fixture against West Ham United, and with the quality in their squad they will be looking to be involved in the race for UEFA Champions League places and even the title itself. The transfer window closed earlier this month, and just beforehand we managed to secure Jordan Ayew on a season-long loan deal. That concluded what I thought was a good summer of recruitment for us, as we managed to identify our targets early in the summer

and then execute the right deals to ensure our squad is stronger and better prepared for the 10 months ahead. I have to thank Steve, the owners, Dougie Freedman and the scouting department for making that happen, and now it’s down to me and my coaching staff to get the most out of the players. We have some exciting options available to us, and it’s a relief to have a virtually fully-fit squad to select from after last season’s injury woes! Like more than half of the clubs in this competitive division, our aim first and foremost is to ensure we maintain our Premier League status. However, we want to do so without having to endure a tense final couple of months nervously looking over our shoulders for other team’s results, which we have had to do too many times in recent years. Key to that will be building up a healthy points total as early as we can. Thankfully we’ve got off to a better start than last season, and despite being underdogs we’ll be looking to add to add to our tally tonight. It’ll be a tough ask, but with your support and everyone pulling together, we can achieve anything.

tonight we can get a good result It is nice to come into tonight’s game after beating Fulham, and I was very satisfied with the way we played to get the three points, which is the most important thing on the opening day.

There were many positives from the game, but for me Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s performance stood out. He is young so maybe it isn’t good to give him a lot of praise, but he was amazing. He’s only 20-years-old but in all the games he’s played in until now, he’s displayed a lot of quality. He just has to keep putting in the hard work in training and listen to the manager and us who are trying to help him, and then he’ll be a very important part of our team. We didn’t experiment too much before the start of the season, but we know each other already which is a big advantage, as well as the manager not changing before the start. We have just carried on where we ended last season when we had an amazing run, and in the last six games we took 14 points and were unbeaten in preseason. That gives us a lot of confidence because you believe in what you’re doing and do it well, and that win against Fulham has only helped that. On a personal note, it was also good to get another win over my friend Aleksandar Mitrovic. It’s now 2-1 to me, which makes me very happy! Another thing I’m pleased about is our transfer business towards the end of the window. In my last notes, I mentioned that we needed to bring in two or three players, and it’s very good we’ve done that. They will add more quality to the squad. I know Cheikhou Kouyate from Anderlecht and he is a quality player, and I spoke to some friends who have played

with Max Meyer in Germany and they said a lot of good words about him. We already know about Jordan Ayew as he’s played against us in the Premier League, so I think the recruitment staff have done a good job. It is very important to have a deep squad. Last season we had a lot of injuries, even 10 at the same time at one point, but a deeper squad will help us to switch the players in and out and change formation. We have a lot of quality players and I think we’ve improved this season. Because of that, I believe that tonight we can get a good result. I watched Liverpool play West Ham United and they were amazing, and they have improved from last season when they reached the final of the UEFA Champions League. They have brought in some new players and put some more pace in the team, and for me they are the favourites for the title this season. That means it’ll be a very tough game for us tonight, but I am excited to play at Selhurst Park on what I think will be a special night for all Eagles fans, and for us as players as well. Make some noise!

Get behind Roy and the lads tonight I hope everyone had a great summer and managed to enjoy the incredible weather! Welcome back to Selhurst, and of course welcome to the staff, players and directors of Liverpool.

It’s certainly been an action packed few weeks as we prepared for the new season. I am sure you will all join me in welcoming our new players Vicente, Cheikhou, Max and Jordan to Palace. I would never describe the transfer window as enjoyable, but working with Roy, Dougie and Iain Moody this summer was definitely a positive experience and we believe we did the very best we could given the money that had been invested previously. Pundits and fans will have their own views on whether their club had a good or a bad window, but what I will say is in my experience, you won’t really know for a year or two. Looking back to January 2017, that looks like a very good window now when we brought in Patrick, Jeffrey, Mamadou and Luka. This one will hopefully be viewed as favourably, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. What I do know is that you will give the new players your 100% backing. Perhaps the biggest signings of the summer were the contract extensions we agreed with Roy, Ray Lewington and Wilf. I have no doubt that you are all supportive of the work the manager and assistant manager have done at our club, and I’m ecstatic that they will be with us for at least this season and next. Wilf’s new long-term deal is another example of his commitment to the club, and our commitment to him – it is richly deserved. I must also take this opportunity to place on record my thanks for the contribution of players who recently

departed the club – Damien, Bakary, Chungy and Yohan. They will all be remembered fondly, and are always welcome here in south London. Damien especially played a massive part in the journey from the promotion season to the last five campaigns in the top-flight. He has been a rock on and off the pitch, and we wish him well with his new endeavours with Cork City. Last week’s win at Fulham was magnificent. It was a real team effort, but I’d like to particularly praise Wayne for his outstanding performance between the posts and also congratulate Jeffrey on his first goal for Palace. And watching two graduates of our academy in Aaron and Wilf linking up so well for the second was a great moment. We are not getting carried away after one win. Tonight’s opponents spent a reported £170 million this summer on a squad already packed with superstars, and they also started well. But we have proved in recent seasons that on our day, we are more than good enough to give them a game. Get behind Roy and the lads tonight as you always do, and let’s show the world just how special Selhurst Park is on nights like this. Up The Palace!

After both teams got their Premier League campaigns off to the perfect start on the opening weekend, Palace and Liverpool face off tonight looking to keep their 100% records intact. Having suffered the disappointment of seeing a sixth UEFA Champions League title slip from their grasp against Real Madrid in May’s final, Jurgen Klopp is determined to lift his first piece of silverware on Merseyside this campaign and oversaw a £155 million recruitment drive which brought in Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho, and Xherdan Shaqiri to attempt to fix the Reds’ defensive and squad depth issues last term. There were no problems with their strikeforce though with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane bagging 91 goals between them. Palace have never started a Premier League campaign with consecutive victories, but having won their last three competitive games at Selhurst Park, Roy Hodgson’s team are looking to secure four home top-flight successes in a row for the first time since December 1990, when coincidently the fourth game also came against Liverpool. Despite the tall task ahead of them, they will be aware that Klopp’s team haven’t won a league game on their travels since they last visited SE25 in March when Salah popped up six minutes from time to deny the hosts a point.

CHRISTIAN BENTEKE has scored six goals in nine top-flight games against former club Liverpool, more than he has against any other current Premier League team.

newsroom SUMMER TRANSFER ACTIVITY ROUND-UP Four new faces could make their home debuts this evening following a busy summer for Palace off the field, as Roy Hodgson reshaped his first-team squad. Former Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita arrived on a free transfer from Getafe in July, before Cheikhou Kouyate was purchased from West Ham United a week before the season got underway, who featured for Senegal in this summer’s World Cup. The following day the Eagles swooped to also secure the signature of German international Max Meyer, who was a free agent following the expiration of his Schalke contract, and then concluded their incoming business by loaning Ghana striker Jordan Ayew from Swansea City for the duration of the campaign, who netted against Palace home and away last term. Meanwhile, a number of players departed the club following the expiration of their contracts. Yohan Cabaye switched to UAE side Al Nasr, while long-serving defender Damien Delaney returned to Cork City where he started his professional career. Chung-yong Lee, Bakary Sako and Diego Cavalieri are all seeking new clubs. Jaroslaw Jach has moved to Turkish outfit Çaykur Rizespor on a season-long loan deal, while other Eagles

players can still depart permanently or on loan to Football League and foreign clubs until the end of the month, despite the Premier League transfer window closing.

ZAHA EXTENDS PALACE STAY Last week, Wilfried Zaha pledged his future to the club by signing a contract extension until the end of the 2022/23 season. The Eagles attacker has been at the club since the age of 12 having progressed through the academy, and is now Palace’s joint-highest Premier League scorer after his goal against Fulham on the opening day. After putting pen to paper, Zaha said: “I’m very pleased. Obviously, I just wanted to get it over and done with, so I can just focus on the season. I’m buzzing that we managed to get it sorted.” Steve Parish added: “It’s absolutely fantastic for the football club. We’re committed this year to giving it our best shot, and this is the final piece of the jigsaw.”

HODGSON PENS NEW DEAL On the eve of the new season, Eagles boss Roy Hodgson signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Selhurst Park until at least the end of the 2019/20 campaign. The hugely experienced coach is now in his 43rd year as a manager, and speaking about the new deal, he said: “This is a club that has been close to my heart since I was a youngster growing up in the borough of Croydon, and having stood on the terraces in the 1950s, it is a wonderful thing to be managing my boyhood club all these years later. “I am thrilled that I have the support of the owners, who believe that I am the right man to help this club move forward and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”

He has been labelled a wonderkid, one of European football’s brightest stars and even ‘the German Messi’, but one thing is for certain – Max Meyer is an Eagle. Here he speaks to Jonathon Rogers about how perhaps the signing of the summer came about.

The news came from out of nowhere. Throughout the summer, the name of Max Meyer was coupled with some of European football’s biggest names, but suddenly the hottest free agent in the game was being photographed in red and blue stripes – and not those of Bayern Munich or Barcelona. Palace’s capture of the 22-year-old German international caught journalists and fans completely off-guard as they beat off huge competition to land a player routinely lauded as one of this generation’s most promising talents. Only once before had the Eagles unexpectedly landed such a marquee name from the continent, and Meyer hadn’t even blown out the candles on his second birthday cake when Attilio Lombardo was captured from Juventus. However, the Bald Eagle - while still undoubtedly hugely talented was the in the silhouette of his career, but a glittering future surely beckons on Meyer’s horizon. So just how did Palace claim such a coup? “I first heard of the interest in late July, so it was only a couple of weeks later that I signed,” Meyer said. “The main difference between Palace and the other clubs interested was that Dougie [Freedman] and Iain [Moody] went out to Germany to visit me, and then I came to London to meet the manager. I already knew that it was a great club and city, but I got the feeling that Palace were making a real effort to push the deal over the line. “Everything is new and exciting for me. I’m getting used to playing with a new team, as well as a new language and culture, but the first few weeks have been great. I can’t wait to play in the Premier League. After watching the Fulham game, I’ve already noticed the differences between the Bundesliga and the Premier League, especially how intense and quick it is over here, so I’m very excited to get going. “I really think we can have a good season. We have plenty of quality and a strong squad - when you compare it to Schalke, it’s as strong, or maybe even stronger. I’m also enjoying being in London. It’s one

of the best cities in Europe, if not the best, and very different to Gelsenkirchen.” As well as the differing landscapes and languages, Meyer is also benefitting from a fresh start. His nineyear association with Schalke ended acrimoniously after reports suggested he was banished from their training ground after contract negotiations stalled, forced to spend the final few months of that deal in exile. Having not played competitively for over four months, unsurprisingly Meyer’s fitness is behind his new teammates’, but he is working hard to put that right.

“During pre-season I had a personal trainer to keep me ticking over when I wasn’t training with Schalke, but now I’m training again with the Palace squad it feels like I’m progressing,” he said. “I played some minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly which were good for me, and I feel fit and ready to go. It’s obviously the manager’s decision but I’d love to be involved against Liverpool, either in the team or as part of the squad. “Being unable to train with Schalke from May until July was a difficult period for me. On the whole it was a great experience until I didn’t sign my second contract extension. I loved my time there but I wanted to leave. It wasn’t the way I wished things had gone, but as far as I’m concerned the past is the past.” Meyer may only be looking towards the future, but Eagles supporters have only had their appetites whetted after casting their glances over his career to date.

He joined Schalke’s academy as a nine-yearold and enjoyed early success in the Royal Blues’ youth ranks, helping the under-19s win the 2011/12 youth championship for the first time in over half a century thanks to 11 goals and 11 assists in just 15 appearances. A professional deal was swiftly drafted and inked, but it would be in his national colours where he really came to attention. Having won caps for Germany’s under-15 and under-16 sides, he rattled in nine goals from 18 appearances for the under-17s, including playing a starring role in the UEFA Under-17 Championships in 2012 which Germany won in large because of Meyer’s displays, which saw him walk away with a winner’s medal, the Golden Boot and the Player of the Tournament accolade. “That tournament was a huge breakout moment in my career,” Meyer reflected. “After that I started training with Schalke at the age of 16 and things moved very quickly. I made my debut at 17 so I had a bit of time to get used to the difference in pace between the two levels.” Supporters across the land were getting excited that perhaps they had unearthed the jewel of this latest golden German generation. On his professional debut in February 2013, Meyer did little to dampen the hype when he laid on an assist to help turn defeat into victory against Mainz, with Schalke soon acknowledging their rising star’s status by handing him Raul’s previouslyretired number seven jersey, something he admits that as a 17-year-old was “a great honour”. Weeks later, Meyer repaid that faith by setting up Julian Draxler’s goal that clinched UEFA Champions League qualification at PAOK’s expense, a moment the German media dubbed ‘the €20-million pass’. By now, Meyer’s name was being included amongst all the other touted wonderkids’, with journalists on these shores going as far as to tag him as ‘the German Messi’. “That was great to hear because he was my favourite player growing up, but it wasn’t something

I heard in Germany,” a bashful Meyer admitted. “I only read it once or twice in the English media, so it wasn’t a big thing back home.” However that assist for Draxler allowed the teenage sensation the chance to share the same stage as his idol and the rest of the giants of the European game. He made 18 Champions League appearances between 2012 and 2015, but having recently been starved of the chance of adding to that tally, his move to Palace is partly to placate his hunger to be tested regularly against the best the game can offer. “The Champions League is the greatest competition to play in,” the midfielder added. “However, the draw of the Premier League is that you’ll be playing teams that are of the same quality as those in the Champions League, especially the top six, so being able to play against top quality opposition every week made it easier to transfer from Schalke to England.

THE DRAW OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE IS THAT YOU’LL BE PLAYING TEAMS THAT ARE OF THE SAME QUALITY AS THOSE IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE “I haven’t played in the Champions League for three years, and I miss it – I had some great experiences in the competition such as when we won 4-3 at Real Madrid. That was a great moment.” Despite spending his Saturday afternoons picking out killer passes for strikers or utilising his futsal background to manoeuvre out of tricky situations, at the time like many 18-year-olds Meyer was still living with his parents. Perhaps home comforts were the secret to his whirlwind rise to fame, which continued when his seven goals in 41 outings during his first full season at Schalke were rewarded with a spot in Joachim Low’s preliminary 2014 World Cup squad.

His teenage dreams came true when he won his first full cap against Poland ahead of the tournament, and looking back with pride he said: “It was a hugely special moment for me. It seemed like everything was flying by as I’d debuted for Schalke at 17 and when I was 18 I got the national team call-up. I was nervous though having teammates who were playing for the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and the biggest clubs in the world.” After being cut from Low’s would-be world champions ahead of the tournament, Meyer would still taste success in Rio albeit two years later at the 2016 Olympic Games. Given another platform to show his talents on a world stage, he dazzled again and as captain netted a hat-trick against Fiji during his team’s procession to the gold medal game. In the final he scored an equaliser against the hosts to force a penalty shootout, but Germany would suffer a rare defeat in a spot-kick competition and had to settle for silver. “At first it didn’t seem like the biggest deal because people in Germany didn’t take it too seriously,” Meyer said. “But the further we progressed through the tournament, the bigger it got. It was a great thing to be able to play in the Olympics, and especially as captain and win a silver medal.” After leading his team to within a whisker of Olympic gold, Low swiftly hand him a further three full caps in the autumn of 2016, with Meyer bagging his first goal for Die Mannschaft against Finland in October. In the summer of 2017, he returned to the under-21 side to play another key role which helped them lift the UEFA U21 European Championship, and was once again named in the Team of the Tournament to solidify his status as one of the game’s up-and-coming talents. Now, against the odds, those talents find their home at Selhurst Park. If Meyer can make a similar impression to Lombardo’s back in 1997, then the German’s arrival in south London may not be the biggest shock that Palace create this season.

When I was at Hamilton Academical, I made my debut in January 2005 against Ross County in a home game, so I got the wear the red and white hoops for the first time.

It's a shame it isn't a Palace one but I’d have to say the one from the 2013 FA Cup final for Wigan. It’s not hanging up, it’s in a box somewhere so it’s something I’ll cherish when I retire.

I don't tend to swap much these days, so I’d say it was someone like Graeme Dorrans or one of my other friends from the game. He would have been playing for Norwich City when we swapped.

It’s hard to say which is the best of all-time because there have been so many classics, but perhaps the nicest I’ve ever worn is the new Palace away strip – I really like it!

This season, Ian King and Neil Duncanson celebrate a century of the Palace programme as they chart its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

Part I

1918 - 1922

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

1918/19 With World War I not yet over, paper was still a scarce commodity so the tiny programme produced for the club’s final London Combination season (and first at The Nest) reflected the genuine austerity of the period. In pale blue and measuring a modest 5.5cm x 4.5 cm it was just four small pages and cost only a penny. Its front page contained the fixture list while page 2 had the London Combination table, adverts for the Penge Empire as well as the benefits of shopping at the South Suburban Co-op, plus a nudge for fans to attend the next home game. Page 3 had the team line-ups and likely formations while the back page showcased Odd’s Famous Footballs (available from Odd & Sons in North End, Croydon) and a mysterious drink called Jardox, which was actually Real Beef Tea and made in Crystal Palace. Five and sixpence (27½p) would get you a 16ozs tin and help warm you up! The programme pictured is from the Brentford match on 22nd March which Palace lost 3-2.

The official programme was certainly bigger than the previous season (8.5cm x 5.5cm) but it was just a single sheet that was orangery/ red in colour. Still costing a penny it continued to feature the season’s fixture list on the front (for both the first and reserve teams) along with a persuasive ad for Powell’s Ales and Stouts, made at the Palace Brewery in Anerley – a crate of pale ale would set you back four shillings and eightpence (24p). The reverse showed the Southern League Division One table, the London Combination table plus the two team line-ups and two more ads of the day including Thorogoods, the sporting outfitters from Penge who requested politely that you try their Football Warm Overcoats, and the Penge Empire. The programme above is from the game against Exeter City on 29th November, which was abandoned in somewhat confusing circumstances with five minutes left and no goals.

1920/21 The club’s elevation to the Football League prompted an investment in the official programme to match the club’s ambition on the field. An eight-page edition was issued costing twopence and retained the orangey-red hue, as well as the size and cover content. The next six pages carried club notes (this edition about the probability of winning the title) and forthcoming fixtures, as well as a review of the two previous game against Swindon Town alongside ads for the Croydon Times, G.W. Willis off-licence in Whitehorse Road, Croydon’s Greyhound Hotel and a cap for football fans called the Airoduct. Page 7 had the line-ups, the Third Division and London Combination tables and a list of upcoming home games, while the back cover had a space to fill in the day’s half-time scores and a large advertisement for Smart’s – the Croydon furniture store. The programme illustrated is for the match against Portsmouth on 26th March that Palace won 3-0.

1921/22 For the club’s first ever season in the Second Division it published a 16-page programme, excluding a light card cover and brown print, measuring 14cms x 22cm and costing two pence (1½p approx). The covers gave the dates of forthcoming home matches and the day's train times from Selhurst station. It began with first-team and reserve match reports, with talk of a new ground very evident. A half-page summary on our visitors was followed by a cartoon that usually concerned our opponents, and the centre pages showed the proposed team line-ups numbered 1-22. One page was devoted to a profile on a Palace player and towards the end came the league table, fixtures and results and finally the code for the games on the half-time scoreboard. The programme above is for the game against Clapton (these days Leyton) Orient on 5th November that Palace won 1-0.

CRYSTANBUL REMEMBERED No team has played more Monday night games in Premier League history than Liverpool, but undoubtedly the most galling of those previous 73 occasions came on a balmy night in south London in May 2014, when everyone inside Selhurst Park were witnesses to the Miracle of Crystanbul. With six days of the 2013/14 Premier League season to go, Liverpool arrived in SE25 level on points with Manchester City at the summit. With their goal difference nine behind, they were aiming for a heavy win against the Eagles to boost their chances of holding onto top spot, and they raced into a 3-0 lead. Damien Delaney: “They were going for goals and I can remember the Liverpool crowd singing ‘we want eight’. When the first one went in, they kept looking to add more.” Dwight Gayle: “It was a massive game for them and a lot of our boys got the same feeling, including the guys on the bench if they got the chance to come on. When you’re 3-0 down against possible champions was going to be a hard task and other fans might have though that was it, but ours were fantastic and up for it.”

DD: The crowd were great– they kept going even though we were 3-0 down. A lot of fans would have left earlier or the sound would have dropped off which would have definitely filtered through to the players, and we would have thought “let’s just get out of here at 3-0’.” Despite being three goals down and only pride to play off, Palace tried to keep the score down, but with 11 minutes to go, Delaney fired home what seemed to only be a deflected long-range consolation. DG: “Damo used to try that a few times but probably one in 50 went in! It was his only goal that season so after the game he was pretty chuffed with himself, so all the boys were saying it was an own goal! DD: “When the third went in I was convinced we were going to go on and win it, but unfortunately we just ran out of time. If we’d had another two minutes we would have got a fourth which was the most frustrating part – I didn’t want the referee to blow up.”

At the end of the game, Luis Suarez famously broke down in tears as Liverpool’s chances of a first league title since 1990 realistically ended. Also in tears was Julian Speroni whose contract, and possibly his decade-long association with the Eagles, was nearing its end. DG: “I wasn’t surprised with Suarez’s reaction at all. It was only the season before that I was doing the same thing when I was at Selhurst when Peterborough got relegated, so you can’t help it when there’s a lot of passion in the game.” Julian Speroni: “That night was probably the most emotional game during my time here as I really thought it was going to be my last game for the club at Selhurst. "The reaction of the fans was incredible and I can’t thank them enough for that. It’s something that will stay in my memory for a long, long time.”

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palaceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Liverpool.

The very first Liverpool Football Club was not the one we know now. Founded in 1857, Liverpool FC was a rugby union club, whose first match was played in that year against old boys of Rugby school. In 1871 the club provided four players for the England team that played Scotland in the first ever rugby international. The club merged with St Helens RFC in 1986.

Everton played their first match at Anfield in September 1884, and even won their first championship there seven years later, but trouble began when the then-club president purchased the ground and demanded a much higher rent. Having found land to purchase across Stanley Park, Everton switched to what became Goodison Park, with Liverpool moving into Anfield when they formed in 1892.

In another oddity involving both clubs, Liverpool actually wore blue and white in the first five years of their existence, with Everton donning pink and blue, orange and blue, and even red and blue in one season. The Reds moved to a red shirt (albeit with black shorts) in 1896, changing the shorts to white the following season and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t settle on all red until 1965.

Kenny Dalglish, Bill Shankly, and Graeme Souness may be synonymous with the club, but the Reds have always had a strong Scottish connection. In 1892 then-founder and owner John Houlding went north of the border to sign virtually an entire squad, while Liverpool have never won the league without a Scottish player.

Speaking of King Kenny, he was the first ever player-manager in English football. Amassing 355 appearances and 118 goals in his playing career, as a manager he won three First Division titles, an FA Cup and four Charity Shields in his six-year tenure before resigning in 1991.

One of the oddest ever injuries was suffered by Liverpool player Michael Stensgaard. Signed by Roy Evans from Danish side Hvidore in 1994, the goalkeeper never appeared in a first-team match as he managed to dislocate his shoulder while setting up an ironing board soon after he had joined. The injury was so bad that he had to keep having surgery on it, and his contract was eventually ended by mutual agreement.

No-one can deny that Liverpool are always on TV, but this is not a new phenomenon! Highlights of the Redsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; game against Arsenal were the first to be screened on Match of the Day in 1964 (with a TV audience of 20,000 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; less than half than actually watched it in the ground itself), and similarly the first colour transmission of a match also involved Liverpool, this time against West Ham United in November 1969.

he seeds for the historic 1968/69 season had begun to be sown during the previous Second Division campaign when Palace fans had already been given the taste, albeit briefly, of being top of the table for the first time ever. In January 1968 the club was ousted from the FA Cup at the first hurdle by Third Division Walsall after a replay at Selhurst Park, with their barrel-chested left winger Colin Taylor causing the Glaziers trouble with his fearsome shooting. Then in March centre-half Alan Stephenson was sold to West Ham United for a club record £75,000, providing manager Bert Head with funds to spend on players. About the same time Tom White left for Blackpool and Johnny Byrne moved across to Fulham after his second spell with the club had not been as successful as many hoped. Shortly after the season’s conclusion, Taylor was the first summer arrival and then Head recruited a blonde wing-half from Scunthorpe United for £10,000 by the name of Mel Blyth. There were two pre-season games for the fans to see these new players in action against West Ham and Chelsea – the former at the Crystal Palace National Recreation Centre in a sort of homecoming for the club. These two matches highlighted a tactical tweak by Head as Cliff Jackson, normally found on the left wing, was moved to centreforward in a move that would prove inspirational. Ninian Park to face Cardiff City but the new formation proved too much for the Bluebirds. Debutant Blyth, at inside left, opened the scoring in less than 10 minutes and then Jackson opened his account before turning provider for David Payne to give Palace a three-goal advantage by half-time. Early in the second half Jackson netted his second to secure a comfortable 4-0 victory over opponents who would become promotion rivals as the season progressed. Town provided a stiffer test but were sent away pointless from SE25 after Mark Lazarus netted twice in a 2-1 success. Birmingham City suffered the same fate in the first Saturday home game as the clever and mobile Jackson, revelling in his new role, opened the scoring early on before City were reduced to 10 men when Fred Pickering was sent off for disputing a blatant penalty decision, but Steve Kember’s spot-kick was easily saved. But Palace did extend their lead when Payne netted right on half-time and midway through the second half Jackson made it 3-0, but despite City coming back with two goals, Palace held on to top spot in the fledgling Second Division table. The fine start ended abruptly at Middlesbrough as John Jackson in the Palace goal was beaten four times as Boro replaced the Glaziers at the head of the division. Another defeat followed at Bury during which Lazarus was dismissed for retaliation following a heavy tackle, with Blyth scoring Palace’s goal in the 2-1 defeat. These two setbacks meant Head made his first changes to the line-up for the visit of Norwich City to PALACE

Selhurst the following Saturday with Blyth moving back to partner John McCormick in the heart of defence, and the displaced Jack Bannister taking over from Eddie Presland at left-back. It worked as Palace returned to winning ways with ‘Cannonball’ Taylor netting his maiden Palace goal with a typical piledriver and Bobby Woodruff got his name on the scoresheet for the first time.

hat was the feeling around the club going into the 1978/79 season? It was exciting times for us all. We had been going well the season before until Ian Evans broke his leg, so we were hoping for a better finish than the ninth-place we ended up in. We had to build again, so Jim Cannon went to centre-half with Billy Gilbert alongside him, and with Paul Hinshelwood, Kenny Sansom, Peter Nicholas and John Burridge in the team we were strong and hard to beat. That meant if we went a goal ahead, we tended to get a win or a draw and we accumulated the points that way. Everyone put a shift in and we defended from the front, so the forwards were the first ones to close people down. We all had our own specific jobs to do, and worked well as a team.

How important was the good start to the campaign to build confidence? Having that number of points under our belt in those first few months really set us up to sustain the run for the rest of the season. That helped build camaraderie in the dressing room but also out on the training pitch, which also had an eager competitiveness. Even in training we would be kicking lumps out of each other and the manager would have to wind us in a little bit at times. Nobody wanted to miss out so you

had to perform in training to make sure you were on the teamsheet on a Saturday. How difficult was it to not get carried away and start dreaming of promotion? Terry Venables was very much one of those managers who was a great believer in taking each game as it came, and you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t gone up until your name is on

the trophy. We weren’t allowed to get carried away and Terry made sure that we kept our feet on the ground. He said to stay focussed and go into each game with the attitude that it’s another game to win, because otherwise we would get caught. The final five all proved to be tight games, such as the 1-0 win at Orient and the Burnley game. You had to earn the goals in those days of the second tier and battle right to the end, just like you still do today in the Championship. You scored in the final game at home to Burnley, what are your memories of that special night? I remember getting to the ground quite early and it was already two-thirds full with an hour or so still to go, so you could sense something special was on the cards if we could perform. When you got out into the stadium the place looked amazing with fans even sitting along the touchline. The volume of noise after the first whistle must have intimidated Burnley and I thought throughout the

game we were all over them and should have scored earlier than we did, but Walshy’s goal in the second half and then mine late on saw us come through with the right result at the end of the night. For Palace fans, it was all the more pleasing because we pipped Brighton to the title!

alace have never lost an opening match of the season under Steve Coppell. And the record remained intact in Tuesday’s starter at Selhurst Park – thanks to Gordon Durie. Chelsea’s Scottish striker ballooned his 44th minute penalty so high over the bar that he has probably had nightmares ever since. Not that Palace could have slept too soundly either. So eager that they were to impress that it all got a little uncontrollable. Perhaps Palace’s delayed start did not help. By the time they got around to kicking off their 1988/89 programme some teams in the division had already played two matches. Palace, it appeared, seemed to want to pack enough action into the one evening to make up for lost time! And all that energy might have been completely wasted had Durie showed them no mercy from his spot kick. Weighing everything up, though, Palace would have felt hard done by not to have taken something. They showed no lack of aggression or commitment and on chances had the edge on Chelsea. It was just that it all got somewhat frenetic at times with Chelsea, eager to make an early impact on the Second Division, suffering the same way, too. With both sides seemingly giving themselves little time to breathe, it wasn’t surprising that close combat

led to some wincing tackling and one or two unruly scenes. As a result it was a testing game for Solihull referee Vic Callow and his linesmen who, perhaps understandably, did not get it all right. There wasn’t much doubt about Chelsea’s disallowed effort in the fourth minute when Durie clearly impeded goalkeeper Perry Suckling from holding on to the ball. And there certainly wasn’t a problem with Chelsea’s one legitimate strike of the night in the 11th minute. Durie’s burst left Gavin Nebbeling in his wake and the cross was snapped up by Kevin Wilson who cracked the ball home.

But there were question marks over Palace’s 25th minute equaliser. David Burke pumped a searching ball into the area. Chelsea ‘keeper Roger Freestone was hampered by Mark Bright’s challenge and Neil Redfearn struck in the loose ball. Almost sustained pressure from Palace followed and Chelsea, irritated by the nagging Ian Wright, sent tempers flying when Palace’s striker was pole-axed and Graham Roberts appeared to deal with things his own way. From then on the game was never a pretty sight and Mr Callow attempted to make some justice out of it all by handing out bookings to Chelsea’s Steve Clarke and Palace’s luckless Nebbeling later in the game. Just on half-time Mr Callow had to make his trickiest decision. Durie made the most of Burke’s nudge from behind, the Chelsea 'end' roared, and, not surprisingly, the finger pointed to the spot. Chelsea’s £2m rated striker gave the Palace fans the last laugh as he rashly lifted the ball several feet over the bar as Suckling moved forward.

Other free-kicks and injuries littered the game which didn’t help the flow, although Palace kept surging forward and there were chances for the taking. Wright’s run and cross saw Freestone parry the ball and Glenn Penyfather had the briefest glimpse of an open goal. But by the time he had got his shot in, cover had arrived and Colin Pates blocked the effort. Alan Pardew replaced Pennyfather in the 67th minute, which, as it proved, wasn’t too clever as Nebbeling hobbled off three minutes later. Adjustments had to be made, Geoff Thomas moved into the back four, and Palace lost their impetus. Thomas was the complete captain – a driving force in midfield and contributing in both penalty boxes. And an encouraging return was made by Gary O’Reilly after his long fight for fitness. But for me, the game’s honours went to Chelsea’s left-back Clive Wilson, who kept an ice-cool touch while the temperature arose all around him. Can You Help Damary? The Foundation is urging supporters to register with DKMS as potential lifesavers in support of 12-yearold Damary Dawkins. The young footballer, who is a member of the Foundation’s Elite Player Development Centre, has acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and urgently needs a blood stem cell transplant that could potentially save his life. Earlier this month, Damary had the opportunity to visit the first-team training ground, where he received the support of players and manager Roy Hodgson, who urged fans to lend their help. “It was a pleasure to meet Damary and his family,” Hodgson said. “Damary is a big football fan and a promising young player and we were all impressed by his bravery and composure at what must be a very difficult time. It would be fantastic if we could help to find a match for Damary that could save his life and I would urge Palace fans to register with DKMS.” At the age of nine, in 2015, Damary was diagnosed with ALL - a type of cancer that leads to a larger number of white blood cells and lower number of red blood cells and platelet cells. The treatment course was set to last three years, with Damary receiving the strongest chemotherapy available for leukaemia. The family were told his treatment would end in July 2018 with Damary then being free from cancer, but instead received the news that he had relapsed. Doctors have said Damary’s best chance of survival is a blood stem cell transplant because the cancer is more aggressive than before and chemotherapy alone will not work. A search of Damary’s family has not found a suitable match so he is now relying on a complete

stranger to be his potential lifesaver. Damary’s AfricanCaribbean heritage means the search is even harder because there is a lack of black, Asian and mixed-race donors on the stem cell register. Pre-season has been a rollercoaster. When we were told that we weren’t getting into the Women’s Championship there was a lot of disappointment, but social media allowed us to see how much backing we had from our supporters. It was then brilliant to be allowed into the Championship, but we’ve had to quickly adapt and prepare ourselves for the step up. Everyone is buzzing ahead of the new season! The excitement levels around the club are so high and the girls have been working really hard. Expectations have been raised a little, as we don’t want to have received all that backing and not perform as we should do. It will be tough; some of us are going into the new league a bit blind as we’ve not played at that high of a level before, but we have recruited a few experienced players which should help. Juggling work and football will be tough. We will be playing teams who are much stronger, more disciplined and probably more clinical, so the biggest thing for us will be trying to optimise our training time. We are comparing ourselves against teams like Manchester United who are full-time athletes, whereas we all have day jobs so we have to manage our time well as individuals, and a team. I can’t wait to face Manchester United this season. I’m a United fan so I’m already eyeing those games up, but I’m equally looking forward to playing Charlton

Athletic again which is always a tasty game for us regardless of the league we’re in. It’ll also be interesting to see how Tottenham Hotspur have developed since we last played them a couple of years ago. The exposure of women’s football has gone through the roof. People are beginning to buy into it - a lot more people are coming to watch the games and young girls are getting involved which allows academies to be set up. The women’s game has been on a huge journey over the past 10 years, but there is so much more room for growth so these changes have to be positive in the long run. Leading Palace out as captain in the Championship will be an honour. It’s going to be the highest level I’ve played at in my club career, so to know I’m playing in the second tier is massive because sometimes you mentally cap things and believe you’re only good enough for a certain level. What the club has achieved has helped push me on personally, so it’ll be great to show the girls that all the hard work has paid off. I’ll probably be harder on the girls, so I probably won’t be liked as much! You have to demand quality from your players, and if I don’t perform I won’t gain their respect, but I don’t see it as pressure. It’s a chance to step up and correct some things that I didn’t do right last year, so it’ll be a new challenge. We hold ourselves to certain standards and expect to perform.

Under-18s boss Paddy McCarthy runs the rule over his team’s chances of retaining the U18 Professional Development League 2 South title during this campaign. We’ve had a really successful pre-season in terms of implementing the style of play and the culture within the group, and we’ve had a good variety of opponents from different categories. We beat Bromley in our opening game before also winning against Exeter City, and then drew against Swansea before our unbeaten start came to an end against Wolves in a tight game. We bounced back by beating Chelsea and Wimbledon, and ended our preparations with a draw against Stevenage so we’ve had a lot of tests and it’s been a good learning curve for the new recruits. We’ve had a bit of a squad overhaul as a lot of the lads have stepped up to the development side, but it’s my job to get them prepared for that level and I’m delighted to see them advance. It obviously has a knockon effect for my team, but it creates opportunities for younger players from the under-16s, who we’ve handed gametime to already this year. Even with the change in personnel, I don’t see why we shouldn’t try to replicate last season’s success.
