I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT THEY WILL BE PULLING OUT ALL OF THE STOPS TO ENSURE THAT THEIR PUSH FOR A SECOND SUCCESSIVE TITLE IS NOT HALTED HERE TODAY.

THE MANAGER 05

we have a chance to do the double I am delighted to be writing these programme notes today on the cusp of our seventh consecutive season in the Premier League.

When, as a boy, I saw Crystal Palace lose their place in the Third Division South and get relegated to the newly formed Fourth Division, the prospect of seven consecutive years at the highest level would have been a pipe dream. It was a busy week for the team since I last wrote my notes with the Huddersfield Town game at home followed by two close away trips to Tottenham Hotspurs’ new stadium and then up to St James’ Park for Newcastle United. Six points and two clean sheets from those three games in the space of seven days is extremely pleasing. Of course, no defeat is easy to take, but as I mentioned postmatch after the Spurs game, we more than played our part on a big night for the Lilywhites, and had we kept it level for another 10-15 minutes in the second-half, we would’ve been primed to have taken something from the game as we showed with a flurry of chances in the dying stages. We all know about Luka Milivojevic’s penalty-taking credentials, and to be directly responsible in two games, in the space of a week, for two high pressured, game-changing moments speaks volumes of the man and the player. In particular, the penalty against Huddersfield came at a decisive point in a must win game. You could feel the relief in the stadium when the ball hit the net and we were on our way to those three crucial points. I would also like to give a special mention to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, your Player of the Month for March; Aaron’s development this season, after breaking through last campaign, has been truly remarkable and I’m excited by what the future holds for him as an Eagles player.

PALACE

Although survival is not mathematically confirmed, the fact that now we have a margin of twelve points, effectively, with five games to go should mean that we are safe for another season in the top flight. The remainder of our season starts today with the visit of Manchester City and I would like to welcome Pep Guardiola, all staff, players and board members of the Citizens. In particular, Raheem Sterling, who was outstanding in his support for Damary Dawkins and I look forward to the reception Selhurst Park will deservedly give him this afternoon. Today we have a chance to do the double over Pep Guardiola’s side after our incredible 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium which will be fondly remembered for Andros Townsend’s wonderful long range effort and an outstanding team performance. However, like every other football lover in the country, I am full of respect and admiration for the job Pep Guardiola and his staff have done at Man City and I have no doubt that they will be pulling out all of the stops to ensure that their push for a second successive title is not halted here today. We shall be counting on your loyal and noisy support this afternoon and in our final two home games as we bid to finish the season strongly. Enjoy the game!

WE HAVE THE BEST ATMOSPHERE IN THE LEAGUE, EVERY SINGLE GAME YOU COME, YOU GIVE US AMAZING SUPPORT AND YOU’VE BEEN AMAZING SINCE I HAVE ARRIVED.

THE CAPTAIN 07

get something in front of our fans A lot has happened since my last captain’s notes with three games in the space of seven days but it was a week that showcased many different positives about this club even with a defeat.

Against Huddersfield Town, the first-half was not as we wanted and they played well. However, second-half we made one tactical change with two forward players and that gave us more freedom, more space; we created a lot of chances in the second-half, where I think we deserved to score before my penalty. The Tottenham Hotspur game was different; defensively, we did very well that game but offensively, with the ball, we didn’t create a lot of chances. The back four, they had a decent game but in the end Spurs put us under big pressure and won 2-0 – it is obviously not what we want but they are a top side and they deserved three points, they were the better team. I saw lots of comments from the Tottenham game in the media about the atmosphere our fans created but I cannot praise the fans for just a game against Tottenham because we have enormous support from them for the whole season. Maybe the media said what they did about the fans making noise because everyone was watching the first game at the new stadium, and maybe they were surprised by the sound created but I am not surprised. In my opinion, we have the best atmosphere in the league, every single game you come, you give us amazing support and you’ve been amazing since I have arrived. Why I love and respect the Palace fans is because when we have very hard moments and lack results, you stay behind us, you stick with us and give us support and that is something you cannot find in many teams.

PALACE

v

MANCHESTER CITY

The Newcastle United game highlighted our strength in depth; when you have depth in your squad, it is the best, because you have confidence when something goes wrong, you have belief players from the bench can come and change the game. We had a problem with goal kicks because they pressed us tight when our goalkeeper had the ball, so we had to go long. Michy, Wilf and Andros are amazing footballers but they aren’t those type of players where they can jump and compete for that first ball but when Christian came on we started to compete for that first ball and win some of the second balls. We started to play our game; he gave the game a positive impact and gave us confidence. Moving on to today’s game and the last two matches against Manchester City we didn’t lose. They know it is not easy to come and beat Crystal Palace but we know they will be 100% focused and concentrated; they are a top side and maybe the best side in the league. You don’t expect to get a lot from Manchester City, they will give you very little from the game but you need to be very focused to take those chances we will get in front of goal; I hope to copy something from the games in the past, because it has worked, and we will try and get something in front of our fans. Make some noise!

WHILST WE ARE NOT MATHEMATICALLY SAFE, WE ARE WITHIN TOUCHING DISTANCE. NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO RELAX AND TAKE OUR FOOT OFF THE GAS, IT’S THE TIME TO DIG IN AND SECURE MORE POINTS AND CLIMB THE TABLE.

THE CHAIRMAN 09

we are within touching distance Welcome to everyone associated with Manchester City football club to Selhurst Park today – supporters, players, staff and directors alike. Welcome back to each and every Palace fan here today.

What a difference a week makes. I penned my last set of programme notes a few days before that hugely important visit of Huddersfield Town, knowing that anything other than a win would have created a bit of unwelcome uncertainty for us. Whilst it wasn’t pretty at times, the important thing was the result – which in the end, was thoroughly deserved. We then had the privilege of competing in the first game at Tottenham Hotspurs' magnificent new stadium, which is now probably the finest in the country. We didn’t really get going, and were a bit disappointed that their first goal benefitted from a huge deflection. Whilst we had chances late on – in all honesty, Spurs probably deserved their win on a special night for the club. Off the back of that we went to Newcastle United and managed to bring all three points back to south London. In many ways we did to Newcastle what teams have done to us at home all season - we hung in the game, and then Roy brought on Christian who help set-up a trademark Wilf-Luka combination, to steal the points. Six points out of a possible nine in a threegame week is no mean feat and whilst we are not mathematically safe, we are within touching distance. Now is not the time to relax and take our foot off the gas, it’s the time to dig in and secure more points and climb the table. Your support in that crucial week was magnificent, as always. Our regular travelling fans have witnessed seven wins on the road in the league this season, but –

PALACE

we have to be honest - we haven’t given our supporters at Selhurst Park enough to shout about this season. Hopefully, the players can put in a performance and once again provide a shock against this wonderful Man City team for the second time in a season. I must take the opportunity to praise Luka – his goals have been huge for us this year, and having a spot-kick taker who has such confidence in his ability is a massive boost for us. I’m sure he has one eye on Andy Johnson’s record, and will continue to put himself on the line week in, week out for his side. He is a true captain and leader. Our next home match against Everton will be a special one for several members of our 1968/69 and 1978/79 teams, as we invite them back for a reunion to mark the anniversaries of our first and second promotions respectively into the top flight. Finally, I hope many of you will be joining us at Boxpark on Tuesday 30 April, as we celebrate the season with you all and reflect on the efforts of our players, with several awards to be handed out. Those of you who packed out the Croydon venue this time last year will agree it’s not one to miss – we make the event free of charge as we want to thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the game, and up the Palace.

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Manchester City // Sunday 14th April // Selhurst Park

Today's game Crystal Palace are looking to complete a top flight double over Manchester City for the first time since the 1972-73 campaign. Indeed, the last non-big six side to beat the Citizens twice in the same Premier League season were Everton back in 2010-11. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has won 23 of his 27 Premier League matches against English managers (losing just once), with his only such defeat to date coming against Roy Hodgson and Crystal Palace in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has scored 20 Premier League goals in London – only Wayne Rooney (30) has scored more when excluding goals for London clubs. However, Agüero is yet to score in his five appearances at Selhurst Park in the competition. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is winless in his last two league meetings with Crystal Palace – he’s only ever had longer winless league runs against Everton (3) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (4) in his entire managerial career. Crystal Palace’s 11 victories after 33 games is their joint-most at this stage of a Premier League campaign (also 11 in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17). Crystal Palace have kept six clean sheets at Selhurst Park in the Premier League this season – they last kept more in a single top-flight campaign in 2013-14 (7).

Luka Milivojevic is two Premier League penalties short of matching Andrew Johnson’s all-time league record for the Eagles (21).

PALACE U15s TAKE HOME FLOODLIT CUP Crystal Palace’s U15s won the Premier League Regional Floodlit Cup after a thrilling 3-0 victory over Chelsea’s U15s, who were the reigning champions. Played in front of a sizeable crowd at The EBB Stadium in Aldershot, the young Eagles dug deep to repel a late charge from their opponents. A free-kick from Victor Akinwale forced a fingertip save from Kelechi Chibueze in the Blues’ goal. However, Fionn Mooney was able to scramble it home to open the scoring. Akinwale went from provider to goalscorer on the 31st minute slamming home from close range after a surging run and pass from Tayo Aderamola Akinwale finished off proceedings, too, in the 51st minute bagging his second – and the game’s final – goal of the game. The win saw the Eagles get their hands on the trophy, and in doing so, have now reached the national final of the tournament which will take place on May 3rd against Sunderland or Wigan Athletic.

Martin

Kelly

Mr Reliable to the Crystal Palace faithful, Martin Kelly’s recently signed new contract was welcome news. Here, he discusses with Dan Blazer football’s access all areas culture as well as revealing just how important Fantasy Football is to the Eagles squad.

16 MARTIN KELLY

Some people believe Fantasy Football is a game of luck. Some believe it is a game of footballing knowledge. Some believe it is a game about spreadsheets and, finally, others believe it is a humiliating hobby that costs them dearly due to pre-season confidence failing to avoid end of season forfeits. If we were to guess what Martin Kelly’s opinion is on it, we’d have to go for a ‘game of skill’ given that the Palace defender is currently the highest-placed first-team player in Crystal Palace’s staff league – tied with Wayne Hennessy for bragging rights – and even though Kelly refused to offer a slight bit of rib-tickling or showcase any form of smugness at his current position in the table, the stifling of a smile was good enough for us to know it means something within the dressing room just like it does in group chats around the globe: “The start of the season everyone has their teams out, and we all chat about it on the Friday before the game.” Insider trading may well be illegal on Wall Street but down in Beckenham at the Eagles’ south London training ground complex, it is actively encouraged when it comes to stealing a march on your Fantasy Football rivals. One Palace man in particular has earned Kelly his standing this season, with the 28-year-old’s teammate in defence coming as a bargain buy: “Looking at how much Aaron [WanBissaka] was at the start of the season, I think a lot of people at the club who knew how good he was before his first full breakthrough season would’ve had him in their team.” Only three players in the whole of the Premier League have had a larger price rise this season than the Eagles’ latest south Londoner to roll from the production line, with title-chasers Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson, along with

MARTIN KELLY 17

"No I don’t think he does know that’s the name of my team! I just saw it and thought: ‘I’m having that’!”

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matt Doherty marginally ahead of Palace’s right-back. Kelly’s Palace-themed XI doesn’t just end with his 21-year-old teammate, though, with central defensive partner James Tomkins also shoring up his side at the heart of the defence. And Kelly will certainly be smiling after the duo put in two clean sheets in the space of seven days, with Kelly himself contributing to the shutout at St James’ Park last time out for Roy Hodgson’s side. And there’s another man in red and blue helping Kelly to lead the league with the assistant manager to his squad being none other than Cheikhou Kouyaté. However, Palace’s midfield enforcer doesn’t know that Kelly has opted for the team name ‘The Kouyate Kid’: “No I don’t think he does know that’s the name of my team! I just saw it and thought: ‘I’m having that’!” But if Kelly fails to overcome Hennessey as the highest-placed first-team player Kouyaté – despite being none the wiser - will be shouldering some of the blame from his teammate, no doubt. If Kelly does emerge victorious in the home stretch of Fantasy Football against his Palace team-mates it will enhance the former Liverpool man’s reputation amongst the Eagles fan base as ‘Mr Reliable’ off the pitch as well as on it. Taking a fan’s comment on the news that Kelly had recently signed his new contract to extend his stay in south London perfectly encapsulates how the Englishman is viewed: “Ever ready Kelly never lets us down.” The insight from behind the training ground walls when it comes to Kelly revealing that, like millions of football fans around the world, the Palace man and his team-mates enjoy the light-hearted competition will be warmly received by fans. And while naturally we’d all want to know the best approach from the industry’s experts, it must be asked: when does craving insight into our footballing heroes cross the line into an invasion of privacy?

18 MARTIN KELLY

Today’s game sees Crystal Palace welcome Manchester City to Selhurst Park, with the Citizens famously releasing their Amazon Prime documentary ‘All Or Nothing’ earlier in the season. Although not the first of its kind, the City documentary was certainly the most high-profile and provided another step towards that all access locker room setup we see in the NFL. “A lot of us footballers wouldn’t like cameras around in the dressing room; you’re a football player, you’re in a room with your teammates, you’re talking, privately, about the game or composing yourself to go out there on the pitch, collecting your thoughts. During the game is the time we express ourselves and put ourselves on display. “Since I’ve made my debut the game has come on in that sort of aspect - the world has - so you can sort of see it going down that NFL all access dressing room type of content. “Am I a fan of it? I’ve got to say it doesn’t really appeal to me but I totally appreciate that the fans want to see as much about the footballers as they possibly can, so to get that in depth look of behind the scenes on matchdays and at training it is good for them.” Kelly’s concerns are further justified when you consider that on the day that the Eagles signed him from Liverpool, the manager who brought him to the club, Tony Pulis, left Palace just hours later to be replaced by Alan Pardew. Although in the end Kelly needn’t have worried about the change in the dugout as his ability shone through and he went on to play in 31 of Palace’s 38 Premier League games that campaign under Pardew. However, the situation change for the now-28-year-old would’ve been something not easy to deal with, and only worsened by any potential all access cameras. Despite Kelly’s valid concerns regarding the interference to things such as matchday preparation, the Palace defender, who was at Liverpool during

"Since I’ve made my debut the game has come on in that sort of aspect - the world has - so you can sort of see it going down that NFL all access dressing room type of content."

"We’ve got a good social bond in our dressing – we always have since I’ve joined Palace – it has been a big part of this team and squad."

MARTIN KELLY 21

the filming of ‘Being Liverpool’, was full of praise for the man facing Hodgson in the dugout today, Pep Guardiola: “Watching the documentary you learn a lot about Pep. That’s the most you get out of the documentary; about how he works and behind the scenes at the facilities that they’ve got – it is incredible what they have.” Back in 2016 NBC released their ‘Behind The Badge’ series, documenting life at Palace under the leadership of Pardew and although Kelly would prefer to limit 24/7 filming in south London, the defender was more than happy to delve slightly further into the firstteam squad dynamics: “We’ve got a good social bond in our dressing – we always have since I’ve joined Palace – it has been a big part of this team and squad. “We try and get together every so often and have a meal with each other or there’s a few lads at the club who play golf competitively so we get a few golf days in now and then. We actually try and meet up with our kids and let them have a run around together as down here you’ve got the weather much more than where I am from up north, so it’s great to explore the parks down here in the capital.” So while Martin Kelly may be renowned for his reliable, unwavering work ethic and commitment, it’s great for the Eagles faithful to get a glimpse into another side of their Palace hero. As long as it’s away from matchday and out of the camera’s lens – as perhaps you would expect with a man of his modest approach – he can be found just like the rest of us: obsessing over Fantasy Football and taking the kids out with friends and family. This easy to relate to lifestyle isn’t surprising, with Kelly a popular face down at Palace’s training ground complex. We’d just hate to see what happens if Wayne racks up the points…Here’s to hoping for another fine Wan-Bissaka display today and – who knows? – points both on and off the pitch for Crystal Palace and Martin Kelly

100 YEARS OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

PART 19

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

2008/09 With the club choosing to return to the white shirt with the red-blue sash the programme cover reflected this in the usual 80-page production and the price was held at £3. There was also a return to one of our previous printers, Bishops. There were the usual opening columns from manager Neil Warnock ‘From The Dugout’ and captain Shaun Derry. The main content offered an eclectic mix of opinions and choices with ‘In Our League’, ‘Hold The Back Page’ and ‘It’s A Funny Ol’ Game’. There was the opportunity for a fan to name his Palace XI and state their reason and John Henty made a return with ‘Forty Years On’. Those who liked to read about our past were catered for with ‘Memory Lane’ and ‘From The Vaults’ looked back on various aspects of our history. Each programme contained a two-page interview with a member of the backroom personnel that are vital to the running of the club and as usual there were reports on the academy and reserve sections. Like normal, the programme finished with a stats section.

2009/10 Despite the club entering its second administration in January 2010 there was little change to the programme as it maintained a similar format to the previous season. The variation in articles continued and both the academy and reserves were now afforded two pages each while a welcome addition came at the back of the programme with club chaplain Chris Roe’s ‘REVelations’. The past had its section with ‘Remember When’ and ‘Rock and Goal Years’ and a review of the seasons forty, thirty and twenty years previous on the club’s return to the top flight. Seven pages were given over to the visitors and the middle eight pages contained an interview with a player. ‘Championship Chatter’ and ‘World Soccer’ looked at football away from SE25 and the ‘Q&A’ part of the programme, usually with a player, became a means of keeping supporters up to date of the ongoing administration. ‘Kids’ Corner’ looked after the younger fans and ‘Action Replay’ showed the stats, line-ups and a brief report on a recent away game or two. The final home game programme came with a free 20-year anniversary magazine of the 1990 FA Cup run to Wembley.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29

2010/11

2011/12

With new owners CPFC 2010 getting their feet under the table there was little change to the content, cover design, printers or price of the programme from the previous season - although there were alterations to the title of most of the topics. Each issue opened with the manager’s comments (there were two as George Burley departed mid-season) and ‘Captain’s Comment’ by Paddy McCarthy. ‘Hot Off The Press’ gave news around the club that included a regular column from the Supporters’ Trust and in ‘From The Press Box’ a member of the opposition’s local press gave his view of the game. Home players contributed ‘My First…’ and ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ looked at a recent away game and there was also an update on the Crystal Palace ladies team and an interview with one of the

The programme was now to be produced by an editorial team and starting this season it was edited by Mike Sinnerton and all contributors were listed. Each edition had a number printed on the cover as well as the outline of a clock that indicated the kick-off time and inside was a page by page list of the contents. A new item in each issue was ‘From The Boardroom’ in which one of the four co-owners gave the fans recent news about the club and another was ‘Eagles In Exile’ – an interview with a former player. The visitors were afforded twelve pages that included ‘Club Connections’, ‘Classic Campaigns’ and ‘Flashback’ which was a photo from a previous encounter. Comedian and Palace fan, Kevin Day, gave his thoughts on the Eagles, the Foundation, Study Centre and Palace Radio all given space in the eighty pages. There was a quiz section for the junior supporters that included a ‘Spot The Difference’ pair of pictures and showed the matchday mascots. The usual results section came towards the last pages and the final word was left to announcer Mike Rankine.

Crystal Girls. A new item was ‘Celebrity Eagles’ and involved a Palace fan from the world of stage, screen or television gave a Q&A interview. A source outside the club provided ‘Strikers and Stoppers’ that highlighted players in those positions who featured over the years for our visitors and the final pages included the season’s fixtures and results.

How many days does it take you to return to work after finding yourself at the epicentre of a terror attack?

Two. That is all policeman and Palace fan Leon McLeod took from work before returning, despite being out on the frontline when the London Borough Market terror attacks hit in the June of 2017.

LEON M c LEOD

"When I did realise, I still didn’t attribute it to mental health and my wellbeing" Recalling the events of that night, it is quite clear from talking to Leon that it still doesn’t feel real: “It was just a normal night shift and my colleague, Wayne (Marques) and myself were chatting about the Champions League final, what we were going to have for dinner…the usual chat, when we heard a noise 100 yards away where Borough Market is…someone came up to us and said somebody had been stabbed, but even then we didn’t realise the scale of what was going on. “At no point was I particularly thinking ‘I have to do this, I have to do that’ – it was honestly all just autopilot; I just knew I had to do something.” Leon’s colleague, Wayne, was brutally stabbed in the head that night. Thankfully, Leon was able to help people and come away from the scene unharmed physically, but the emotional scars still linger on. “There was no pressure from work to return,” Leon explained, “I just felt like I needed to not hide away from this feeling and get back to normal and part of it was testing

myself to see if I still felt comfortable in that environment.” “My mentality has always been that you have always to get back up and get on with life – in hindsight, though, I did that too quickly. “I reached out to a couple of organisations, and I was aware of PTSD999 - a service that offers emotional support to officers who need a way to ‘come out of the other side’ from the traumas and experiences they’ve witnessed. But even then I didn’t get massively involved with them, not until therapy sessions made me realise how much I needed it. “I have to admit that it was always on offer to me but I didn’t take it up because I didn’t know there was something wrong. When I did realise, I still didn’t attribute it to mental health and my wellbeing.” Leon has come a long way in almost two years. It is a testament to himself, his network of family, friends and work colleagues that he is now able to talk so openly about the events of that night, not only for his own rehabilitation but for others out there who have been through similar experiences.

"I appreciate it so much and it has made me love my little club even more"

Growing up, lots of kids dream of becoming a policeman and it has a lot to do with the uniform – the closest they can get to being a real life superhero. And interestingly, the feeling of invincibility by pulling on those iconic blues doesn’t subside as you get older and realise those dreams: “I wore my uniform when I went to see Wayne in hospital and I suppose, again, that was me testing myself to see if it felt right. “Initially it didn’t: you put this uniform on and it does make you feel safer and more confident. However, the first few times I put it on, it had lost this feeling and took several outings to get that feeling back.” Wayne has now also returned to work since the horrendous injuries suffered and Leon is well on the path to dealing with what happened to him and his colleagues on that horrific night in London, and it is things like his love for Crystal Palace that have helped his journey: “It becomes more important to do things like go to Crystal Palace games. There are times when you just don’t

PALACE

v

want to get out of bed but it is massively important to drag yourself away. “It was more surreal going out at Selhurst at half time than meeting the Queen when I was awarded the Gallantry medal at Buckingham Palace! It is my club and for them to have backed me; I appreciate it so much and it has made me love my little club even more.” Leon does acknowledge that his road to recovery from the events at Borough Market isn’t complete, in spite of his progress so far: “I still have my down days. However, after being awarded the Gallantry medal I realised I was now in a situation to truly make a difference and raise money for mental health awareness, which is why I’m running the London Marathon this year to raise money for PTSD999. “I am aware my £10,000 target is an aspirational goal – but if I can help just one person, I will be happy.” If you have been moved by Leon's story, then please donate: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ leon-mcleod

THREE-TIME PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

The manager Into his third season as manager of Manchester City and Pep Guardiola is eyeing his second consecutive Premier League title with the Citizens, which, if successful, will be the Spaniard’s ninth league title as a manager. Guardiola’s success on the touchline with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Man City should be no surprise given that, as a player, the former Barca midfielder won a total of 16 honours for club and country during a playing career that spanned over 18 years, with the Catalan icon making over 500 appearances.

Club legend A 15-year career with the blue half of Manchester between 1949-1964 saw Trautmann make 545 appearances between the sticks for the club. As a German pilot during the Second World War, Trautmann spent time in Lancashire in a prisoner-of-war camp & the signing of the ‘keeper wasn’t initially welcomed by the Maine Road faithful. However, such moments as completing the final 15 minutes of the 1956 FA Cup final with a broken neck (a game in which City emerged victorious) saw the shot-stopper win over the Citizens fan base and cement his place in their history books.

50 CHRIS WATERS

Things you didn't know... ABOUT THE CITIZENS

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Manchester City.

Founded as St. Mark’s (West Gorton) in 1880 before becoming Ardwick Association FC in 1887, Manchester City finally assumed their present name in 1894. The original club was founded by two church wardens who wanted to provide a more positive activity to unemployed young men rather than gangs and drinking. Their first recorded match was against a church team from Macclesfield on the 13th November 1880.

Success was not too long in coming as the team were promoted to the First Division in 1899, and won the FA Cup in 1904, beating Bolton 1-0. However, the club was mired in a financial scandal the following year when captain, Billy Meredith, was accused of being offered bribes to throw the final match of the season against Aston Villa. The results of the investigation were catastrophic for City, with the manager being banned from football, five directors sacked, and a staggering 17 players banned from the game for 18 months.

City’s former stadium Maine Road still holds the record for the highest home attendance by an English club (if you exclude Spurs’ sojourn at Wembley), when an incredible 84,568 supporters packed into the ground for their match against Stoke City in 1934, in which the Citizens emerged victorious with a 1-0 win. In its pomp, Maine Road boasted the largest playing surface in the country.

PALACE V MANCHESTER CITY

CHRIS WATERS 51

In the 1937/38 campaign, City became the only ever club to be relegated in England with a positive goal difference. Despite scoring 80 goals and conceding 77 they fell through the trapdoor into Division Two by slipping five places on the last day of the season, a relegation made all the more incredible as they had won the First Division title just the year before!

As Palace fans will attest, Malcolm Allison sprinkled magic wherever he went. His stint as assistant manager at City led to a renaissance in playing style and club fortunes. In the 60s, he got the club to adopt the red and black away kit colours of the great AC Milan team of the time, to inspire the players. It worked, with the club winning the 1969 FA Cup, 1970 League Cup, and 1970 European Cup Winners’ Cup in those very colours.

City were the first team to have won a European trophy and subsequently play in the third tier of their league. They achieved this dubious moniker having won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970 but were relegated into the third tier of English football as recently as 1998. They bounced straight back, coming back from 2-0 down in the play-off final against Gillingham by scoring twice in the last two minutes, going on to win on penalties.

John Burridge is remembered with affection by Palace supporters with over 100 appearances for the club but his time at the Citizens was a record-breaker. Although the ‘keeper only played four times for the Citizens, his appearance against QPR in May 1995 at the age of 43 years and 162 days means he is the oldest player to have played in the Premier League.

LB: Danny Granville – CPFC 130/10 MCFC 62/3 Signed from the Citizens after two years in Manchester, Granville became a key player for the Eagles and was crucial to the 03/04 play-off-winning team. CB: Kit Symons– CPFC 60/7 MCFC 141/5 Over 100 league appearances for City, Symons is fondly remembered by the Maine Road – and now Etihad – faithful. Symons has twice been caretaker manager for the Eagles (once whilst still playing). RB: Sun Jihai - CPFC 24/0 MCFC 114/4 The former Chinese international’s first taste of English football came whilst on loan at Palace for the 1998/99 season. However, the Eagles opted to not make that a permanent move, meaning the defender had to wait until City signed him in 2002 for his debut in the Premier League. LM: Mark Kennedy – CPFC 47/1 MCFC 77/11 Utilised as a left-back and a left-midfielder, Kennedy’s ability to score was extremely handy for the Citizens in their promotion to the Premier League in his debut campaign for the club. CM: Michael Hughes– CPFC 141/10 MCFC 32/1 Hughes started his career as a trainee with the blue half of Manchester and after four years learning his trade, Hughes departed for Strasbourg. 11 years after leaving City, Hughes moved to Palace and quickly became a fans’ favourite and club captain. Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that secured the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

Derby County 0 Crystal Palace 1

Match report reproduced from the Croydon Advertiser

T

he golden goal competition winner had 60 min, 45 seconds stamped on his card at Derby on Wednesday but his reward was small compared with the gold struck by Crystal Palace. Derby County players had relaxed all day in one of the town’s plush hotels to get in the right frame of mind for the clash. Ironically, Palace, spending four days in the more Spartan atmosphere of the Lilleshall Recreation Centre, booked in for a meal at the same hotel after the match. It turned out to be victory dinner. How these Palace players earned their vittles. They achieved what 16 other Second Division clubs had failed to do before them this season – beat Derby before their own fiery supporters. This well and truly puts them in the promotion hunt and whereas Derby looked secure from all challengers a few matches ago they are certainly not wearing the smile of champions now. Admittedly they pressed furiously for spells at the start of each half, but they were never allowed to show their best skills against a Palace team always harrying and always chasing. What's more, Palace achieved victory without resorting to negative defensive tactics. Palace decided on a 4-2-4 formation – and kept at it. This aggressive outlook undoubtedly surprised Derby.

en

ue Q y r Ger

Even when Derby threatened to take control Palace refused to be drawn into a defensive shell and the speed and power of Colin Taylor, the wiles and unorthodoxy of Woodruff, the talents of Kember and the grafting of Tony Taylor had the Midlanders in trouble time and again. Admittedly Derby had their chances, but so did Palace, who netted five times but found only one being entered in the scorebook. The work of men like Mel Blyth and John McCormwick cannot be overestimated. Blyth does not always get the best of treatment from the Palace fans but here never flagged, his interceptions breaking down countless Derby moves.

Frank Wignall, Derby’s expensive buy from Wolves, had a vast percentage of Derby’s chances but was not allowed the time to take them so quick were Palace into the tackle. Palace were sharp: Derby distinctly not so. It seemed that Palace had gone ahead after 23 minutes when a Lazarus cross sped low across the goalmouth and Green parried it out to Woddruff, who netted. Joy turned sour when the referee acted on a linesman’s flag, apparently for offside against Lazarus. Minutes later Woodruff hit the crossbar, the ball looped up and down, was headed by Tony Taylor and finally swept into the net with his hand. Tony Taylor again netted early in the second half but had clearly helped control the ball with his arm. Derby’s pressure was never enough to beat the confident Jackson, although Hector did push one shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. Things looked bleaker when Jackson lay prostrate after a kick on the head, but he recovered. He was

PALACE

v

slightly concussed and did not realise that Palace had scored until long after they did so, being seen by a doctor after the game. Happily all was well. Finally there came the moment that snuffed out the crowd’s enthusiasm, Colin Taylor received the ball and tried a shot that hit McFarland and veered goalwards. Tony Taylor’s effort was blocked but Woodruff was there to poke in the loose ball. In the space of four days Palace have completed wins over second-place Cardiff and leaders Derby and it is an important fact that they have lost only one of their last seven away games.

Season Part 6

T

hese two months always seem to be hectic in the football calendar and forty years ago it was no different with 13 league fixtures crammed into eight weeks. It began on 3rd March with a 1-0 home victory over Wrexham that kept the Eagles in third place behind Stoke City and Brighton & Hove Albion with West Ham United and Sunderland also in contention but a goalless draw at Fulham the following Saturday allowed the Black Cats to overtake us. There followed a midweek trip to Roker Park where Palace took an early grip on the game with two goals inside the first 10 minutes. Despite conceding just before the break, the defence, with Tony Hazell in his final first-team appearance, withstood the second-half onslaught from our promotion rivals. Fate then took control, which, upon reflection, could have led to a different outcome to the season when the home game against Burnley on 17th March was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and rearranged to 11th May. An 18th minute goal by Peter Nicholas at Luton seven days later kept us in touch with Stoke and Brighton but now with games in hand and the drought of league goals was definitely over. A short journey to The Valley to play a game postponed from New Year’s Day witnessed the Eagles go a goal down after 50 seconds but back on level

terms eight minutes later as David Swindlehurst ended his personal goal famine. It ended with the spoils shared but not before the final minute when John Burridge got his fingers to a shot and watched the ball hit a post to run along the goal-line before being cleared. All the action, but not the goals, came in the last minute of the home game against Cardiff City with three players, two from Cardiff along with Swindlehurst, shown red cards but by then the Eagles had the game won with goals from Neil Smillie and Ian Walsh before half-time. Tony Sealy made his full debut in place of the suspended Swindlehurst in a goalless draw Oldham, another ‘catch-up’ fixture on April 3rd then four days later came a 0-1 defeat at Newcastle - that ended a 12-game unbeaten run in the league. A very warm Easter Saturday and the Eagles left it

late at Eastville as Sealy saw his effort cleared off the line in the 88th minute only for Ian Walsh to score the only goal of the game seconds later. Charlton at home followed and again it was a bit of a struggle to find a way past a packed Addicks defence but the exquisite angled drive from Jerry Murphy seven minutes into the second-half was sufficient to bag the points. The next game at Leicester was brought forward to the Friday evening due to a political demonstration planned in the city on the Saturday. It was an evening the reliable John Burridge would want to forget as his error led to the Foxes taking the lead in the 11th minute but again it was a late show by the Eagles that salvaged a point when, deep into injury time, right-back Paul Hinshelwood came up for a free-kick and was on hand to nudge the ball home as it came back to him off a post and the keeper’s head. When the Eagles ran out at Selhurst Park on Saturday 28th April to face Notts County they were still just outside the three promotion places, headed

Firstly take us back to the summer before promotion and tell us about leaving Reading to be signed by Steve Coppell. After coming back from America I had been at Reading for about six months and had played against Crystal Palace, scored and was pleased with how I had played. Come the end of that season the Royals had been relegated and wasn’t keen on dropping down a division, so I sent videos out of me in action with a covering letter to teams in south London and surrounding areas and Palace was the only club to come back to me. Steve had seen me play in that game against his side and took me on loan for about a month and I then signed a two-year contract which I was delighted to be doing and was looking forward to being involved at a club which had showed its progression the seasons before that.

problem and it was very frustrating. I always believed in my own ability so there was no fear of coming back into the side and thankfully my chance came along.

Unfortunately your Eagles career had a disappointing start due to injury, which must have been so frustrating. Each year since I had been at Arsenal in the mid-80s I needed work done on my knee, whether it was a clean out or an operation and I just couldn’t get on top of it. From my first knee operation I did learn from the surgeon that it would be a case of being a continual

games and no one was downhearted as we still had belief that we could turn the score around in front of our own fans. As for the penalty, I would be the first to admit that I had taken a few bad penalties that had scrapped over the line but as soon as that was given I can honestly say I was as calm as anything. Steve always said to me take a long run up and hit it as hard as you can with the side of your foot and that was exactly what I did. I thought to myself I am either going to be the hero in the morning or the villain and luckily it turned out the right way.

You came back in a crucial stage of the season, there were 18 games left and you were part of the great finish to the season. We were so lucky to have the front pair, Wrighty and Brighty, but also had others who contributed so well throughout the team and we were a group who were all round the same kind of age with a point to prove. There was absolutely no fear in the squad and whoever we played, even if we went a goal behind the feeling was that we could get back in the game. My time at Palace was my best time in football in terms of being part of a team. I wouldn’t say we all stepped off the park and went out as a group of friends together but as soon as we stepped on the pitch everyone looked after each other.

The play-offs saw us coming from behind in both legs and Tell us about the penalty in the final. We came back from the first-leg in both play-off

SHAMEL’S STORY Football has been a huge part of Shamel’s life for as long as he can remember, but he didn’t know it would be the thing to help get his life back on track after getting in trouble with the police. Shamel, 21, played the beautiful game throughout his childhood and said his love of football kept him grounded during his younger days. However, when he left school, Shamel lost some focus and then, two months ago, found himself in Croydon Custody Suite after being arrested. It was there that he met Palace for Life coach, Aaron Johnson, who is based at the custody suite as part of the Metropolitan Police programme, DIVERT. DIVERT aims to direct 18-25 year olds who have been arrested into employment, development and educational opportunities. Recalling the day, Shamel said: “Aaron was my hero, my knight in shining armour when he came to my door that day; I knew I could open up to him and tell him things about myself.” After spending time with Shamel, Aaron has helped him to start his FA coaching qualifications, allowing Shamel to pursue his dream of becoming a football coach. “I’m enjoying it, it was great to meet the tutor and the other pupils, I want to focus on finishing this course, get some weekend work and then do some voluntary coaching,” said Shamel. Aaron has been based at Croydon Custody Suite since October. He has spoken to 68 people, 24 were given information, advice and guidance, 33 enrolled on

training and eight have gone into employment. Aaron explained: “When they see I’m in a Palace tracksuit it’s an ice breaker, it helps me open a dialogue with them. No matter what situation they’re in, I’m there to show them that there’s light at the end of the tunnel and when they come out, they can have something positive planned.” Inspector Jack Rowlands, founder of DIVERT added: “The Metropolitan Police service is proud to work alongside Palace for Life Foundation to deliver DIVERT in Croydon. “Having Aaron based directly in custody speaking with young adults is proving to be an effective way of changing people’s lives and helping to prevent future offending. We look forward to continuing our work with Palace for Life and making the biggest possible impact in reducing reoffending and youth violence.” Help us support even more young people like Shamel - www.palaceforlife.org/get-involved/donate

Jude Russell

I’ve been a Palace fan all my life. My parents got me into it and all of my dad’s family support the club. They’re proud that I play for the club I support. My first game was when I was about five or six years-old and I remember my first kit being the old yellow one with the TDK sponsor. My first game must have been at the end of the season because the players did a parade at the end of the match. As a kid I enjoyed watching Victor Moses and Darren Ambrose from the Arthur Wait stand. I used to watch Paddy McCarthy play - now he coaches me! I’ve been coached by Paddy for three-and-abit years now and he gave me my debut in the Under-18s. He’s got a lot of information to give and he knows what it takes to get to the next level so I try to take in as much as possible from him every day. As a player I can sometimes be frustrating to coach but he never loses patience with me. Being part of the academy is a full-time commitment. On a normal day we get in at 8.30 and have breakfast, then we have ‘pre-hab’ which is getting ready for training by stretching our muscles so we don’t risk injury. Then we go out for training. What we do depends on what day it is: on Mondays we have recovery from the weekend, on Tuesdays we do the physical loading and go out to train twice. On Wednesdays we have education, so we don’t train then. On Thursdays we run through tactics for the match and on Friday we get ready for Saturday’s match. We get only Sunday off and sometimes Wednesday if it’s half-term.

PALACE

In our education classes, I’m studying for a BTEC in Sports Science. The qualification would allow me to go to university, especially having played for Palace because they give out sporting scholarships. We went to Loughborough last season and they said: ‘If it doesn’t work out, we’ll help you’. My main strength is bringing the ball out from defence. I’m quite good at looking for passes and defending one-on-one so that my man doesn’t get past me as well. But my biggest attribute is bringing the ball out from the back and creating attacks. Generally, it suits the team’s style. The first-team are quite good at playing out from the back, too, so I think we try to emulate that. Being a young, English right-back, there’s a lot of inspiration around. England has lots of right-backs now who are good at getting forward while still being able to defend. I think coaches are looking to bring attacking players back into the position and that’s why they’re better with their feet today. It’s not just rightbacks, though, the whole England youth setup is great. I went to school with Callum Hudson-Odoi and he’s one that stands out. I haven’t spoken with him in a while but when we were at school, we were good mates so it’s good to see him doing well. At Palace, Aaron WanBissaka shows there’s definitely a path available for academy players. Watching him week in, week out and taking little things from this game gives me inspiration.

watford 2 CRYSTAL PALACE 1 Saturday 16th March 2019

Crystal Palace were forced from the FA Cup as Watford put an end to the Eagles’ dreams of stepping further in English football’s oldest competition. After a slow start, Watford managed to secure a foothold in the game and sent a plethora of testing crosses from right to left and back again, with each pinging clear of the Palace box and beginning to cause concern. The concern proved valid minutes later when Watford opened the scoring with yet another cross being posted over the Eagles’ box, with the ball landing at the feet of

Michy Batshuayi had a series of efforts before his hard work paid off when he calmly carried the ball into the box before slotting home emphatically into the rustling Watford net. The level scoreboard would not go unchanged however as Watford regrouped after the equaliser and found their grip on the game once more. Tightening it, substitute Andre Gray then doubled their tally as he struck past Vicente Guaita to once again put Palace behind.

On the first matchday that the Premier League launched their ‘No Room For Racism’ campaign, the game against Huddersfield Town was one that the Eagles knew there was no room for error in. Thankfully, Crystal Palace secured all three points at a sunny Selhurst thanks to second-half goals from Luka Milivojevic and Patrick van Aanholt against Huddersfield Town.
