THE FOLLOWING WE GET AWAY FROM HOME IS REMARKABLE, IT REALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE TO THE TEAM
THE MANAGER 05
strong defensive performance It is two and a half weeks since we were last at Selhurst Park so it’s really good to be back at home after two very important away victories which extends our unbeaten run to six matches.
Saturday’s win at Leicester was the combination of a disciplined and solid defensive display along with some clinical finishing from our forward line. It was particularly pleasing to see Michy Batshuayi get off the mark with an instinctive finish, Wilfried Zaha score a brace and Luka Milivojevic convert his seventh penalty of the season. Leicester have some very good attacking players who didn’t make it easy for us, but our strong defensive performance provided the foundation for an excellent 4-1 victory and a valuable three points. The previous week we progressed to the FA Cup quarter finals by beating Doncaster Rovers. It was a determined and focused performance against a League One team that have a very good home record. An early goal from Jeffrey Schlupp put us on the front foot and his strike was followed by a fine header from Max Meyer to give us a 2-0 lead before the break. We were well aware that these matches can cause upsets, but we prepared well for that and showed no signs of any complacency. Resultingly, next month we will face Watford in the quarter finals at Vicarage Road, which will no doubt be a strongly contested encounter with a trip to Wembley and a place in the semi finals at stake. I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words about our amazing travelling fans in Doncaster and those that made the trip to Leicester on Saturday - when the support was excellent once again. The following we get away from home is remarkable, it really makes a difference to the team and it has been nice on both of

these occasions to send everyone home happy. We now have two games in four days and the opportunity to continue our good run of form. Saturday’s trip to Burnley will certainly not be easy but we have had some very good results on the road this season and will do our best to come away with valuable points. Onto tonight and the task ahead. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the staff, players and supporters of Manchester United Football Club. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team have been in terrific form since he arrived back at Old Trafford and tonight will provide us with a stern test against a team full of quality players. I was very pleased with our performance at Old Trafford back in November when we kept a clean sheet and earned a well-deserved draw. Hopefully tonight we can compete as well as we did on that day. I know you will be right behind the players and create a fantastic atmosphere to spur us on under the lights. Finally, a lot of positive things have been said about me becoming the oldest ever manager in the Premier League. I am really appreciative of all the well wishes I have received from within the football family and everyone at the club in recent days and would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their support. Enjoy the game!
WE ARE PROUD AND HAPPY TO HAVE HIM LEAD US AND IT WAS AN HONOUR TO SCORE IN THAT GAME
THE CAPTAIN 07
Wins like that are even more massive Having picked up three points with a huge 4-1 victory over Leicester City on Saturday, we are looking to build on our form and are excited for tonight’s game.
It won’t be easy this evening because Manchester United are in incredible form and are a very strong team, but we’re not the only ones who are ready for a tough game as coming to Selhurst Park is not easy for anyone. It will be an interesting match and, in front of our fans, I really hope that we can take something positive from it. It’s the fans that I’d like to give a special mention to this week because, as I‘ve said before, so many of them came to give us support in Doncaster last Sunday and that meant a lot to us. For the team, it’s important to always have their brilliant backing, especially under the lights at home. So tonight, our fans deserve a good game and we’re going to try to give back to them like we do every week. I hope they enjoyed our win against Leicester. What can I say about that result? It was such an important win but it was also a strange game because we felt we could have improved our first half performance. But to score four goals against anyone in this league is not easy, especially against a side like Leicester so we’re really happy with the victory. Wins like that are even more massive because, although we now have 30 points, the table is very, very tight. Our job won’t be easy but we have enough quality to stay in the Premier League and we also have 11 games left where we can pick up points. Starting tonight, we’re going to take things step by step. The league is our main priority without doubt but, looking elsewhere, we’re trying to do something

this year in the FA Cup. Against Doncaster, we played well and we’re waiting excitedly for the quarter-finals where our next opportunity will come against Watford another good side. We all know that if we beat them, we go to Wembley and that’s our aim. If we can reach the final, obviously that would be amazing but our main goal right now is to take our fans to Wembley. I’ve played there before, but never in front of a crowd that will have so many Palace fans. It would be an amazing experience for me for sure. I’d also like to credit our manager, Roy Hodgson, who on Saturday became the oldest manager in a Premier League fixture. As a squad, we are proud and happy to have him lead us and it was an honour to score in that game and to help the team fight for an incredible three points. But for now, let’s come back to tonight’s match where the lads and I are focussed and looking forward to a good competition. Do what you do best as always... Make some noise!

your support will be pivotal Welcome to the supporters, staff and players of Manchester United Football Club, and of course – to each and every Palace fan here tonight.
There is nowhere quite like Selhurst Park for evening matches under the floodlights – it always seems to be louder than normal, which is saying something, and these are occasions we all look forward to as supporters. We certainly felt unlucky not to get at least a point against tonight’s visitors last year especially after being 2-0 up, only to succumb to a Matic wondergoal at the death. We are yet to beat United in the Premier League, but we were fully deserving of the point secured at Old Trafford in November. We will once again need to be on top of our game to get something but we have certainly been playing well, so we will certainly be giving it a go. I want to thank each and every one of the 3,001 supporters who overcame significant travel issues to reach Doncaster in time for kick-off, and not only that – have fans of all clubs talking about how fantastic our support was as they watched on the BBC. You were, once again, a credit to our club. We avoided a potential banana skin, with a professional display with man of the match Luka leading from the front – and go into the quarters absolutely deserving our place in the competition. Of course, retaining our Premier League status remains our number one priority. But I think we are all allowed to get excited about the prospect of a trip, or hopefully two, to the national stadium. I get goose-bumps thinking about it, but as we all know Watford away will be a very difficult match. As usual your support will be pivotal, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.

The huge win over Leicester City certainly helped our chances of climbing the table during the run-in. For once it felt as though the football gods were smiling on us with the opener, but our finishing in front of goal was clinical and worthy of the win. It was a fitting result as Roy became the oldest manager to take charge of a Premier League game. Whilst he may not want his age to be repeatedly referenced, we should take this landmark as an opportunity to reflect on a truly magnificent career – and one that I hope doesn’t come to an end any time soon. I was really pleased with the efforts of several club staff in the recent promotion of Palace Ladies versus Lewes last week. A packed crowd included Mamadou, Bakary and Wilf who all went to support the team, and we also live streamed the game on YouTube. A great initiative, which we’ll do again I’m sure – and hopefully next time, the Ladies can get a better result! Season tickets are soon to be made available for renewal, and I hope you agree when you receive the full information that the offerings for next season soon. I think you would all agree that it’s never dull at Selhurst Park, we are a club going forwards in every area, I look forward to you being a part of it again next season. Finally, please make yourselves heard tonight – give it everything you’ve got for Roy’s team. Up The Palace!
10 TODAY'S GAME
Crystal Palace v Manchester United // Wednesday 27th February // Selhurst Park
Today's game Having already fought and won against the sky blue half of Manchester this season, Crystal Palace now enter today’s game looking to do likewise against its red half at the second time of asking. In November, Roy Hodgson’s men recorded a commendable 0-0 draw facing Manchester United at Old Trafford. Results then were hit-and-miss, but now they are boosted by a strong run of form which sees the Eagles unbeaten in their last six from all competitions. Facing them, however, will be a different United side to that which hit Old Trafford’s turf four months ago as they have won eight from 10 league games under the stewardship of caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær. And while their prowess will undoubtedly worry the Eagles, it is in defence where Palace have been most notably excelling this season. The south Londoners have only conceded three goals from their last six matches, keeping the fifth highest number of clean sheets in the Premier League so far – more than the now solid Red Devils by two. Today’s game will provide a stern threat to that standing, however, as United have moved up from seventh to fifth since the last time they met with Palace. Particularly helping to lead them up the table lately has been Paul Pogba, who has netted nine times from his past 11 matches.
wilfried zaha has scored one or more goals in each of his last three Premier League matches, the first time in his career that he has enjoyed such a run.

Newsroom NEW DEAL FOR KELLY Martin Kelly has been rewarded with a new Eagles contract, which will see him wear red and blue until the end of the 2020/2021 campaign. The versatile defender who has become a fan favourite for his committed performances has made 10 appearances this season, including starting each of the three FA Cup games so far, with the side yet to concede a goal in the competition. Kelly, who has clocked up 110 appearances for Palace since joining from Liverpool in 2014, said: "Being part of a squad that's remained in the Premier League since I came, that's been a real challenge. We've had a great set of lads and we've got a great set of lads now. We added well to the squad so it's always been exciting being at Palace and I've loved the challenge of trying to stay in such a good league and really enjoyed my time here.” Roy Hodgson has used Kelly primarily as a centreback, and the Merseysider is becoming accustomed to the position, saying: "As a centre-half, the experience is coming now. I've been given chance over the past couple of seasons to play there and I feel like each game I'm learning. Watching in the first couple of seasons the people in front of me, I've learnt a lot from them.”
FIFA GAMERS TO REPRESENT PALACE The club hosted a tournament to find the best FIFA players on PlayStation and Xbox amongst its fanbase last week, as part of the ePremier League. 32 gamers made it through the online qualifying stages and were invited to the stadium to take part in the knockout tournament. Damian Augustyniak and Michael Faria were the two victors who will be representing Palace at the live ePL final next month. Augustyniak said: “Hopefully all the Crystal Palace fans can support me throughout the event, I really want to win for the club, and for me as well. I will give my best!” Each of the 20 Premier League clubs will be represented in the tournament by two gamers at the final in London on 28 March, giving them the chance to live their dream of winning a title for their favourite club. The event will be televised live on Sky Sports.

Roy hodgson Having spent 43 years in football management, last Saturday Roy Hodgson became the oldest man in history to manage a team in a Premier League fixture. Here, he talks to Ben Mountain about where it all began, his remarkable career since and how the game has changed in his time.
ROY HODGSON 17
It was in 1976 that a commercial Concorde flight first left London’s tarmac for the skies above and, 60,000 feet below, a 28-year-old Roy Hodgson made his maiden voyage into football management. Whilst the former took off for Bahrain, the latter headed for the little-known town of Halmstad, Sweden, where an incredible journey would go on to span four decades and counting. But the full story goes back much further than today’s golden years of VARbased HD scrutiny and the glory years of The Big Match. It goes beyond digital tickets and beyond lava lamps too. It goes beyond footballers swapping Beats for AirPods at glass enshrouded stadia and back beyond even orange flares. The full story starts in 1947. Growing up as a Crystal Palace fan in post-war West Croydon, many of Hodgson’s earliest memories come from within the iron confines of Selhurst Park, memories which, in turn, themselves inspired an adolescence on the Eagles' Academy pitches and a journey across the world following a passion borne in the heart of SE25. “I used to walk with my father to the Holmesdale Road end of the ground which of course was all terracing in those days,” Hodgson recalled, nostalgically reflecting on his transition from boyhood fan to adulthood leader. “My earliest memories were watching from [on top of] the crossbars which were there to stop the crowd from falling forward. “My father moved down from Newcastle but of course the team he supported was the one he went
to watch every week. We would watch first team matches on a Saturday and then the reserve team on the following one. “Palace were my team. My father had his boyhood team still that he’d keep an eye on - Newcastle United - but he came to London as a 17-year-old himself so it was very much a question of our team, our local team: Crystal Palace. As far as we were concerned, that was our team and would always be our team." Sadly, however, Hodgson’s father Bill died in 1989, 13 years into his son’s generation-spanning career in the game he ignited a passion for. “He’d be very proud I’m sure,” Hodgson said after a moment’s pause. “He unfortunately died a long time ago, before one of my biggest triumphs which was knocking Inter Milan out of the European Cup with Malmö FF. “He died between the two legs of the tie. We won the first leg 1-0, so he was still alive when that happened, but before the second leg was played a couple of weeks later he’d died, so he wasn’t alive unfortunately to see us actually draw that match and knock Inter out of the competition to progress to the next round. “He was very keen on following my career and was able luckily enough to come out to Halmstad and Malmö so he had a chance to participate in part of that career and I know that he was very proud of the achievements I’d managed at that time.” But at one point, things may not have reached even that far in the game as Hodgson entered

management with close friend and fellow manager Bob Houghton holding very different career paths in mind. “I was 28-and-a-half,” he explained. “Bob Houghton started [managing] before me and recommended me to Halmstad in ‘76. At that stage, we were close friends and we didn’t really think that football coaching and management was going to be a career for life. “In fact, we even started sketching plans that, after 10 years or so, maybe we’d put whatever bit of money we had saved together and start up some sort of business. I think we had a travel agency in mind but I don’t know why. Of course, for neither of us did that materialise. Bob coached successfully in several countries for a very long period of time and I’m still doing it. “I’m very proud of my career, I’m very proud of my CV and I’m very grateful for the places the job has taken me. Travelling broadens the mind and I have been lucky enough to meet many people who have had a positive effect on my life." Far from an office in Croydon flogging brochures for discounted summer breaks, instead Hodgson today sits in an office in Beckenham, barely miles from where he was born, and despite the first and latest instalment of his career essentially coinciding in the same postcode, has worked across eight countries for 16 clubs and four national teams. Though his life in dugouts across the globe may have been well spread, and his experiences having had a great impact on the man himself, when it’s distilled down to just the pitch, Roy Hodgson is largely the same
character he was the day he stepped onto Swedish turf as a 28-year-old very much in the infancy of his career. “Am I a different person on the coaching field today than I was in 1976?” he asked rhetorically. “I don’t think I am. I kick a lot fewer balls and I no longer trust my technique as I maybe once would have done. There was a time where for every ball a player kicked, I would kick two! Now that doesn’t happen anymore but that’s for the good. I shouldn’t have been doing that anyway, it was just a bad habit I’ve curbed or a bit of showing off that I’ve left behind me. “In terms of my actual approach to the coaching and what needs to be done, the principles I believe in, the type of practices I think are necessary to get those principles across and what I expect from players on the training field and matchday, things haven’t changed much at all. I feel sure those Halmstad players from the 1976 Championship team would still recognise me as the coach they knew. “I think there was a massive stride made from the mid-70s to maybe the mid-90s. There was a massive stride especially in terms of the speed, the pace, the intensity of the game and the technical levels. You have to be able to do everything now that players have always been able to do but you have to do it so much quicker because there’s no time and space and you’ve got to be able to read the game quicker. “I’m not saying for one minute that the great players of the 1970s would not be great players today but I think we are constantly seeing a better product. If you’re a football lover, if you’re someone who really

ROY HODGSON 21
does study the game of football, you’re getting a fantastic product today.” Sitting with Hodgson on a day after a full morning’s training, a lengthy press conference previewing Palace’s trip to Doncaster Rovers, preparation for the trip itself and being in the middle of a warm Friday afternoon on a week in which he would only take one day off, remarkably not one answer in a sizeable interview came with fatigue, haste or deflection. That said, it was when the name of Sir Bobby Robson was raised and the topic shifted away from himself that Hodgson’s characteristically considered responses became even more carefully sewn together, even more delicately and poignantly thought about. Surpassing Robson as the oldest manager in the league’s history, Hodgson reflected on his friendship with the iconic leader, drawing in a notably more meaningful depth to our discussion while doing so. “The good thing,” he said, “is that it [surpassing Robson] brings back so many memories of him and it brings back the fact that I was fortunate enough to know him and regard him and his wife Elsie as friends. I think that’s probably the most important thing. “Bob took me on my first coaching course at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. He was the one I got to know as the leader of the course which helped me to get my first coaching badge. “I don’t think it [surpassing Robson’s milestone] does anything for me in terms of comparison because I don’t want any comparisons. But what it does, it just
reminds me of how fortunate I’ve been to reach such a milestone and what’s more ‘replace’, if you like, someone who was such an important person to me in my early years. “I’m lucky to be grouped with some really top people and when I say top people, I don’t just mean as coaches. I mean as characters as well within the profession I’ve chosen. Bob Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson are two people I was lucky enough to get to know well and admire. If I add Don Howe and Dave Sexton then I have paid tribute to all of my mentors.” Despite overtaking such icons of the game - a challenge for anyone in football, regardless of when they started – remarkably Hodgson is yet to see signs of stopping anytime soon. “When the day comes when I do start thinking about age and I do start thinking, ‘am I getting too old for this job?’, then I’ll do what’s necessary. But I haven’t felt that at all and in fact I’d say if anything, the job gives me energy. It doesn’t take energy from me. I feel more energetic, livelier and younger working here than I would if I wasn’t doing so. “These last 16 or 17 months have been a very, very happy time.” Both Hodgson’s contentment in SE25 and remarkable longevity will come as a relief to Eagles fans. Today, they watch their team managed not only by a boyhood fan, but, amongst other things, the oldest man in Premier League history too. It helps to show that for both Crystal Palace and global football, Roy Hodgson is a true, incontestable icon.

100 YEARS OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.
PART XVI 1996-2000
28 PROGRAMME HISTORY
1996/97
1997/98
Although the programme was still in the hands of Publications Manager Pete King and his assistant James Coome, there was another change of printers to Morganprint Blackheath Ltd and the dimensions went back to those of three seasons earlier. There was an increased number of pages as the total rose by eight to 56 and the price went up to £1.80, however the amount of advertising stayed about the same. The mixture of articles remained, although any visiting teams were accorded an extra page. And with more focus turning to corporate matters, the marketing section, headed by today's CEO Phil Alexander, was given its own page. Forthcoming ticket and travel information continued to provide details such as the nearest Burger King or McDonald’s to a ground and that a seat generally cost around £15. News on Palace’s reserve and youth teams now included lineups as well as results and the stats section was also upped to four pages. In a hark-back to thirty years earlier, the Football League produced their own magazine as an insert which appeared from March until the end of the season.
Palace’s elevation back to the Premier League meant a small hike to £2 for the matchday programme, now a 60-page production. One change occurred on the back, where the first team squad and their numbers were shown next to separate white boxes to tick if the player featured that day. Such was the turnover of footballers at the club that some names appeared with ‘To Be Announced’ against their number whilst others disappeared entirely. Each issue contained a centre spread pull-out of a Palace player but there was a reduction in detail about the reserve and youth teams. ‘Holmesdale Standpoint’ by Paul Romain became ‘Selhurst Standpoint’ and Palace in the Community now had a page to itself. By this point, the club’s own radio station was broadcasting to the local area and its schedule of programmes for a home game was given. Six pages of each issue was devoted to the day’s visitors and a further four spread throughout the programme dealt with historical matters.

MANCHESTER UNITED
PROGRAMME HISTORY 29
1998-99
1999/2000
Despite relegation back to the Nationwide Division One there was no change to the size, price or material content of the programme. However Palace’s demotion meant there was no requirement to include all the squad names and numbers on the back page, as a straightforward 1-11 sufficed with the numbers 12-14 being left blank for substitutes. Features on opponents stretched to nine pages, including 'Between Ourselves' which contained various stats and 'Past Masters' looked back at a footballer who played for both clubs. Terry Venables’ designation as ‘Head Coach’ meant the opening page had to be retitled from ‘Manager’ and Paul Romain’s topical contribution was reduced to being called 'Standpoint'. In those pre-email days, a letters page remained as did a centre spread called 'Spotlight on a Player' that included a large pull-out picture. The reserve and youth teams each had a page that included fixtures and results and the inside back pages contained all information on line-ups and stats for the first team. There was a continuous design throughout that gave the programme a ‘cleaner’ look compared to the previous season.
Although this season’s programme began with a page reduction to 56, it soon increased to 64 and still retained its £2 price tag. There was also a reduction in advertising, so the amount of readable content gave fans greater value for money. The quality of the product was enhanced continually under the stewardship of James Coome and Terry Byfield. New items included 'From the Boardroom', contributed to by Managing Director Alexander and the reserve and youth teams had three pages to include fixtures and line-ups on. There was also more comprehensive coverage on the opponents. The use of computers in football meant a page entitled “Opta Head to Head” took a player from each club and provided a heap of stats, ranging from pass completion to minutes on the pitch. The centre-page spread and pull-out still remained so there would have been over sixty player posters issued over these three seasons. The 75th anniversary of the opening of Selhurst Park in 1994 was marked with a souvenir edition for the home game against Portsmouth that included a reproduction of the programme of Palace’s first ever game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Troy Townsend is Head of Development at Kick it Out, helping educate the football world - from top to bottom - about discrimination in the game. Here, he tells James Woodroof that he believes his job is more important than ever before.

"PUT ME IN A ROOM WITH YOUNG PLAYERS, AND I’LL STAY ALL DAY LONG. I DON’T WANT TO OVER TALK – I WANT THEM TO TALK. IT GIVES ME THE ENERGY TO CARRY ON"
This season, the football world hung its collective head in shame on a number of occasions. A banana was thrown at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the north London derby. Raheem Sterling was the victim of vile, allegedly racist abuse whilst on the pitch at Stamford Bridge. Mohamed Salah was abused – allegedly targeting his faith – at West Ham United. That video of Millwall fans. And closer to home, Wilfried Zaha felt compelled to call out online trolls. Kick it Out was born 25 years ago, founded by Lord Herman Ouseley. In his own words, “25-years ago football was not a nice place if you belonged to a minority group. Bringing about change has been a long haul.” The organisation remains committed to working with all stakeholders in the game to eradicate discrimination of under-represented groups in the sport. Troy Townsend was inspired to join the fight against discrimination by offering his services as a volunteer for Kick It Out back in 2011. During those early months, he kept the fact that he was father to
Tottenham Hotspurs’ latest talent Andros Townsend a secret, and within months an opportunity arose for him to lead the company’s mentorship programme. “I always felt like I wanted to give back – especially to help those who were in the same boat as me. Young lads who were talented, but without guidance or support – needing someone to help drive them forward. A lot of players from my local area coming through were from single-parent families and have had tough upbringings.” Townsend himself was a promising young footballer before being released by Palace’s Academy aged 16, but he would go on to become a part of the coaching set-up at renowned grassroots club Ridgeway Rovers and later set up his own Academy, before coaching at non-league level helping develop several players into professional footballers. This passion for nurturing talent, combined with empathy for – and mutual respect from – these young men made his move to Kick It Out a perfect transition.

A recent Sky survey found that 86% of regular match attendees in the UK polled have witnessed racist abuse at matches. Just 29% reported it. Crystal Palace FC is committed to promoting equality and diversity across the club: to its players, staff and supporters. We want to ensure that the environment on a matchday is welcoming to all, and that supporters feel safe. Play your part in the fight against discrimination by reporting abuse of any form at Selhurst Park by texting 07507 477 669 and/ or by alerting your nearest steward.
Townsend now spends his days travelling up and down the country, hosting workshops and stimulating discussions at several Premier League and Football League clubs with young players, parents and staff discussing discrimination and delivering messages of equality. “It starts with the player understanding themselves – for them to be the best version of themselves. Then it’s about having understanding of others around them, and then being aware of the current issues in the game. We encourage them to express themselves and articulate their thoughts and feelings in a changing room environment, reminding them that they are role models.” Staff regularly say that issues that have been previously considered off-limits are discussed by players long after his sessions have finished, which fills Townsend with pride. “Put me in a room with young players, and I’ll stay all day long. I don’t want to over talk – I want them to talk. It gives me the energy to carry on.”
PALACE
v

One such topic he discusses with stakeholders is homophobia. There remains no openly gay player in the top levels of professional football in England. Townsend said: “About five years ago, I said I don’t think we’ll see an openly professional gay player in my lifetime. I’d love to be proved wrong. I would hope that attitudes change, and whilst there’s been a great shift – there is a way to go. There’s still so much hatred out there. “We’ve let racism and homophobia linger in our game. The awareness is there - it’s on the agenda again, with an upcoming Parliamentary summit. But the proof will be in the pudding. We’re never going to eradicate it, but now is the time to meet these issues head on.” Whilst Townsend’s childhood dream of being a professional footballer is being lived to the fullest through his son, his own contribution to the game may be far greater than he ever could have imagined. The fight against discrimination in the game that is supposed to unite us continues.

THE RED DEVILS FOUNDED: 1902
ENGLAND’S MOST DECORATED FOOTBALL CLUB
The manager Since taking over from José Mourinho in December of last year, Ole Gunnar Solskjær has won 26 points in his 10 Premier League games as United caretaker manager, and the club remain contenders in the FA Cup and Champions League. He is on managerial loan from Molde FK until the end of the season, but the Norweigan will have his sights firmly set on securing a longer-term deal at the club where he made his name as a prolific striker with 126 goals in 366 appearances. Aside from two stints as Molde FK boss, Solkjær previously managed Cardiff City and United’s U23s.
Club legend Ferguson is widely considered as the greatest manager of all time, having led United between 1986 to 2013, winning an unprecedented 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles. Bidding farewell, fittingly, with a league title under his arm, United have since struggled to find a stable replacement, with David Moyes, Ryan Giggs (albeit as caretaker), Louis van Gaal and Mourinho falling by the wayside. Ferguson remains at the club in an ambassadorial and advisory capacity, and was reportedly instrumental in Solskjær’s appointment.

United’s top scorer this season, Pogba has found a rich vein of form and, while he has been impressing throughout the campaign, it is over the last few weeks when he has most notably excelled. From his last 12 appearances in all competitions, the World Cup winning Frenchman has bagged nine goals. Having risen through the ranks of United’s youth system, Rashford is a fine example of the Red Devils’ home-grown talent, playing regularly for both club and country aged just 21. Remarkably, on his Premier League debut, Rashford scored twice and recorded an assist in United’s 3-2 victory over Arsenal. In his time with the club, he has won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League and notched up an astonishing 31 caps for England. MUFC Games: 156 MUFC Goals: 42

Things you didn't know... ABOUT MANCHESTER UTD
s r e t a W s i r Ch By
Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Manchester United.
Manchester United was originally founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, being the works team of the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. It joined the Football Alliance in 1889, but in early 1902 it ran into debts of £2,670 and was served with a winding-up order. Captain Harry Stafford found four businessmen willing to invest in the club, and in April that year Manchester United was born.
It’s common knowledge that Old Trafford is the biggest club stadium in the UK, with a capacity of over 74,000. What isn’t so widely known is that the stadium’s record attendance, 76,962, is not even held by the Red Devils. In 1939, Grimsby Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers contested an FA Cup semi-final at the ground, with the Mariners beaten 5-0 after their goalkeeper was injured. At the time, no substitutions were allowed.
With Manchester City’s spectacular revival in recent years, the rivalry between themselves and United has cranked up a notch. Yet City were generous neighbours in the Second World War when Old Trafford was damaged by bombing, targeted because it was being used as an army depot. United played at Maine Road regularly until 1949, and even played a European Cup campaign there in the 1956/57 season as Old Trafford had no floodlights at the time.

CHRIS WATERS 51
It is said that the club’s nickname “the Red Devils” was coined by manager Matt Busby, who took it from the Salford Rugby League team who toured France. Fred the Red, the sixth club mascot, arrived in 1994, following on from the likes of a real St. Bernard named Major and a goat imaginatively monikered Billy. The latter, given champagne, died of alcohol poisoning in 1909 following United’s FA Cup final win. His preserved head is now on display in the club’s museum.
United are famous for spending big on players over the years, but it wasn’t always that way. In 1956, when Busby won the title (an achievement repeated the following season), not only was the average age of the players just 22, but Busby had not bought a single player since 1953. This continued through to 1957.
The name ‘United’ is invariably associated with success, but the club has had its difficult times too. The early 1970s were a case in point, and the 1973/74 season ended in the team’s relegation to the Second Division. By Christmas, the side’s joint top scorer was goalkeeper Alex Stepney who scored from two penalties.
The Red Devils’ 9-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford in March 1995 remains the largest ever Premier League victory. In that game, Andy Cole became the first ever player to score five goals in a Premier League match. He now shares this record with Alan Shearer, Jermain Defoe, Dimitar Berbatov and Sergio Agüero.

Match report reproduced from the Croydon Advertiser

ARK LAZARUS, freed from the worries of a possible suspension, celebrated his 50th game for Crystal Palace by clinching two vital Second Division points against Hull City at Selhurst Park on Saturday. Lazarus, who has played 43 League games and seven cup-ties, swept-in to net the decisive goal in the 74th minute before going through the now-familiar routine of a jaunt around the field in celebration. Not that Lazarus can claim the lion's share of the victory. The two Taylors, Colin and Tony, worked extremely well on the other flank while Kember's abilities were seen more as a behind-the-line creator. It is, perhaps, a pity that Kember's talents are not used in the role of a striker, especially with Tony Taylor also attempting a fetching and carrying role. With Woodruff getting little change out of Wilson, the power in the Palace line was provided by Colin Taylor, a chunky and gusty performer who would have profited from seeing more of the ball. It was Colin Taylor who must have frightened the life out of Hull's Ian McKechnie in the first minute when he turned and clipped a shot towards the angle of bar and upright. It looked a winner all the way, but McKechnie just got to it to divert the ball. This was one of a series of fine saves by McKechnie, whose handling was always clean and safe. Possibly, he
must take some of the blame for the Lazarus goal, for not advancing far enough, but that was an isolated fault in a competent game. Although they rather lost their grip in the second half, the Palace defence was sound and fairly tight. If the injured Chilton and Houghton had been in the Hull

daringly went down at his feet and then the Hull striker headed a short cross wide of a post. Tony Taylor started the move that clinched the game. He swung in a high cross, McKenchie fatally hesitated, and Lazarus ran on to the ball. McKenchie's body blocked it, but the ball ran on - and so did Lazarus to net. Palace still had one great escape. Wilkinson burst through and speared a short ball to Lord, who sidefooted what looked a certain goal. Virtually out of nowhere, Jackson flung himself across to divert the goalbound shot - an intuitive save.
attack, it could have been disastrous, although this was the fourth away match in succession in which Hull have failed to score. It was never the most exciting game, the football showing that players had been lacking match practice for some time, but it had moments that the 14,172-strong crowd will recall. The first was, of course, Taylor's low effort, followed not long afterwards by a sizzling cross-shot from the same player that flashed across the top of the net. Tony Taylor, too, fired in an awkward shot that so nearly got underneath McKenchie. Then, in the 41st minute, Lazarus took a free-kick on the right, Tony Taylor got a head to it and John McCormick, up in support, headed the ball well wide of McKenchie. Hull's Greenwood, suffering from a pulled groin muscle, went off seconds before half-time and the northerners began to show more urgency in the second period. Hull's Wilkinson had two great chances, but wasted them. He went through once, but John Jackson

he calendar year didn’t start well for the club as a spell of wintry weather played havoc with January’s footballing programme. Disruption started with the postponement of Palace’s league clash at Charlton Athletic on New Year’s Day and the away FA Cup third round tie at First Division Middlesbrough five days later. The cup game was rearranged for the following Tuesday on a pitch still suffering from the weather. Despite the conditions, David Swindlehurst gave the Eagles a half-time lead. Palace then missed several clear chances before Boro conjured up an equaliser in the final minute of time and added another fixture to the already congested list. Four days later, a game away to Sunderland was then called-off due to an icy, dangerous pitch battered by north-eastern climes. The replay against Boro took place on the evening of Monday 15th January and any latecomers that day would have missed a contender for Goal of the Season scored within 62 seconds. Vince Hilaire started it off with a ball to Kenny Sansom who quickly moved it forward to Jerry Murphy and ran on for a return pass. Murphy spotted the opening and floated a cross into the penalty area where Sansom met it first time with the outside of his left boot to score in front of the Whitehorse Lane End. Boro had their own moments with two near efforts from Stan Cummins but it was the Eagles who progressed. Millwall
were the visitors to Selhurst Park five days later with former players Nicky Chatterton and Mel Blyth in their line-up while Palace welcomed back Paul Hinshelwood following injury. The Lions managed to hold the Eagles to a goalless draw, and with those two teams sharing the spoils, the status quo was kept at the top. Palace then faced Bristol City, this time in the FA Cup for a tempestuous game in SE25. Peter Nicholas opened the scoring in the 20th minute and moments after the break, the referee showed City defender Norman Hunter two yellow cards in quick succession. The Eagles soon took advantage when Fenwick drove home a second and Steve Kember wrapped things up with a third. The weather intervened again later, with Palace’s

away fixture at Oldham Athletic on Saturday 3rd February being called off due to a waterlogged pitch that allowed Brighton and Stoke to squeeze past the Eagles at the top of the Division Two table. The Potters travelled down to Selhurst Park seven days later where, six minutes from time, Sammy Irvine headed Stoke into the lead but as the clock ticked down, Ian Walsh fired home a long range effort to rescue Palace a point. On a raw afternoon with a heavily sanded pitch, the Eagles and Seagulls then battled out a goalless draw at the Goldstone Ground, only one of five games played in the whole of the Football League that day. A point each was the fair final outcome. Back at Selhurst to welcome Preston North End the following Saturday, Palace turned in what manager Terry Venables thought was the worst performance of the season as another goalless draw ensued but, despite drawing all four league games between January and February, the Eagles still maintained a top three position. Following a postponement, Wolverhampton Wanderers were the Eagles’ next opponent and, still

suffering from the lacklustre performance two days earlier, they had no answer to Wolves’ goal after just two minutes. Swindlehurst missed the target when clean through on goal and Palace’s third successive game without scoring saw them exit the cup.

Having missed the play-off places two seasons before, how determined was the squad at the start of 1988/89 to ensure you got over the line? It made the squad more determined, we’d been so close for two seasons. I think we all thought this was our time; we had a good young team and a manager who had learnt a lot from the previous two seasons. It’s easy to say now but we were driven and focused on promotion that season. Jim Cannon left in the summer but there still seemed to be a changing room full of players who, despite their age, were showing a great deal of maturity and character. Is that right? Yes, the average age dropped to the mid-twenties. We knew we could score goals and we had a good defence, I believe we conceded less than the two teams who finished above us. At the end of the year, Eddie McGoldrick and Stan Ternent came in and Ian Evans moved to Swansea City. It was a time of change, what differences did these changes make? Eddie was brilliant for us. I’m not sure how many assists he got but he gave us quality delivery from set pieces and wing play. In came Stan Ternent, a no-nonsense charismatic coach. ‘Get that ball into the
penalty area and leave the rest to those two,’ he used to say about Wrighty and myself. I think FebruaryMarch was massive for us, we only lost two league games. I think that was the time we believed we could definitely do this. Palace beat Brighton 2-1 in March, with five penalties awarded – four to Palace. You scored and missed one along with John Pemberton. What was being involved in that game like?

THE GLORY YEARS 61
The Brighton match was one that anyone attending will never forget. Amazingly, all the penalties awarded were actual penalties; I scored the first one and hit the post with the second. The rule was if you missed one you had to hand over duties to the next player, they sent a search party to look for Pembo’s penalty and they haven't been seen since! April proved a massive month with eight fixtures that saw six wins and the club up to 4th place. How crucial was that spell? It was crucial, confidence was running high and we felt we could beat anyone. We had belief in ourselves and how we played. We thought no one could live with us, we were tough to play against. The six wins just confirmed to us that it was on. At this stage we were without our skipper Geoff Thomas, who was injured, but Dave Madden was doing a great job in the middle of the park.
PALACE
v
MANCHESTER UNITED
After coming from behind in two play-off games, Ron Noades had realised his dream of leading the club into the top flight – how great was the achievement for the squad Steve Coppell had built over six years? Both the Swindon Town and Blackburn Rovers results still rank as my favourite achievements, every emotion was felt in those two matches. Wrighty and l scored against Swindon and Eddie’s goal against Blackburn away to make it 3-1 to them gave us hope for the return leg. There were amazing scenes at Selhurst Park for the next match. The best feeling for any player is promotion into the old First Division. Ron and Steve had realised a dream, the next two seasons were equally amazing to make it three years of unrivalled success at the club. It was a remarkable journey for one and all.
Step Back
Many older fans will remember the supporters’ Social Club which stood until the 1980s in what is now the Sainsbury’s car park. In this photo from 1978, fans gathered to listen to the FA Cup third round draw. An away trip to Middlesbrough beckoned, at that time a leading team in the old First Division, bringing expectations of a giant killing. So it would prove. Ian Walsh’s goal at Boro’s old Ayresome Park brought the tie back to Selhurst, where Kenny Sansom’s first minute effort settled it. Palace would go on to beat Bristol City in the 4th round 3-0, but lost at home 1-0 to Wolves in the fifth.

BID TO PLAY WITH LEGENDS Palace for Life Foundation’s annual Play with Legends match coincides with the Crystal Palace Beer Festival on Saturday May 18 and is your chance to lace-up next to Palace legends and play in front of a Selhurst Park crowd. Club icons Andy Johnson, Andy Gray and Saša Curcic will be returning to play in this year’s event alongside Clinton Morrison, making his Play with Legends debut. Between them, these veterans have made 475 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 159 goals. The chance to join them and four other legends yet to be announced is being offered to fans through a series of auctions which will raise money for the Foundation’s work with young, hard-to-reach south Londoners. Johnson, who played in last year’s event and made 161 appearances for Palace during his career, said: “These guys sit in the stands week-in, week-out and they watch their idols, so for them to be able to follow in their footsteps is a fantastic opportunity. “The important thing is this is all about creating awareness of the Foundation’s work and raising as much money as we can to help the community that most of these fans live in. Selhurst is in the heart of Croydon and many local people come here every week to support this club, so days like this are a great way for the club to give back.” If you are a successful bidder, you will enjoy the full player experience: walking down the tunnel, having your kit laid out in the changing rooms and receiving team talks and tactics from your guest managers.

Being a sub for the first-team vs Liverpool was the best thing that’s happened to me in football. I got told two days before the game, it was quite late because we’d had a few injuries in the first team. They told me, ‘be ready, you’ll probably be travelling’ and I was so shocked. There was nothing like the experience, the atmosphere was incredible. Then a week or so later, we played Tottenham Hotspur and that was another huge game for the club. Actually being involved at Selhurst rather than being a spectator was brilliant. My family were so proud to see me in the squad. My Dad and brother are huge fans, they’ve been Palace all their life. I was able to get them tickets so when I warmed-up with Dean Kiely and Julian Speroni, I could see them cheering me on. I can’t repeat what my Dad said when I told him I’d been selected because he swore a bit too much! He was so proud of me. That’s what you do as a young lad, you spend all your time working to get to that stage. The first-team were so welcoming, especially Jules. All of the first-team players were brilliant. Two weeks ahead of the Liverpool game, I was with them quite a lot and they were all pleased with me so I think I got some of their respect. With Jules, he’s Mr Palace himself. He’s been here since I can remember so he knows it all. You’d never think he’s done all that he’s done because he’s such a nice guy, anyone will tell you that. As a young ‘keeper, he was always pointing out tips and helping me out. PALACE
v
MANCHESTER UNITED
I was prepared to come on and play if I needed to. It was always at the back of my mind that I might have to play. They told me, ‘you’re on the bench so be ready, anything can happen, especially with Jules at the end of his career’. He keeps himself in top condition though, so it was okay. But if he had got injured, I’d have been ready to come on. The first five minutes I’d have been a bit nervous but then I’d be all right. If I’ve got a job to do, I’ve got a job to do. Football is everything to me, I love it. I’ve grown up playing it with my two brothers. When I was younger, we’d go out on these playing fields behind my house and dive about in the mud! It’s no different now, we’ll still go and kick a ball about. I became a ‘keeper once my Dad bought a trampoline when I was younger. My brothers and I made up a game where we’d throw a ball into the net and it wouldn’t be allowed to touch the floor. That got my reactions sharper and I just loved diving around. The under-23s are doing well in difficult circumstances. We’re second in the table now and we’re a very young side this year. We can play a really experienced team one week and then the next week, we just field a standard Development side. But we’re doing well. We won our league last season and played our play-off match at Selhurst Park. Because Dion-Curtis Henry had a shoulder injury, I featured even though I was just a trainee goalkeeper.

CRYSTAL PALACE 1 WEST HAM 1 Saturday 9th February 2019
Palace snatched a deserved point through Wilfried Zaha after going down to a first-half Mark Noble penalty. The Hammers began well when Michail Antonio slipped in Ryan Fredricks whose snapshot forced Vicente Guaita into a save, and soon after the Spaniard had to make a similar stop to deny Robert Snodgrass. Ultimately, the visitors’ dominance paid off. A deflected free-kick fell to Declan Rice and he clipped a pass over for Antonio, who was fouled by the charging Guaita. Noble stepped up from the spot and calmly slotted home.
LINE-UPS
Moving into the second half, Palace missed two huge chances as James McArthur dragged a shot wide through on goal and Michy Batshuayi sent an effort past the nearpost despite having only Lukasz Fabianski to beat. On 77 minutes the breakthrough arrived for Roy Hodgson’s team when Zaha picked up possession outside the area. He squeezed a pass through to McArthur who returned it well before the Ivorian saw his shot deflect off Isa Diop and creep past Fabianski to score in back-to-back appearances, earning Palace a point as he did.

Doncaster Rovers 0 crystal palace 2 Sunday 17th February 2019
A comfortable victory for the Eagles saw them ease past Doncaster thanks to first-half goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Max Meyer. Schlupp opened the scoring when from his own half he charged the Rovers’ backline and fired beyond the arms of Marko Marosi. Later, Palace came close to scoring from a corner as a Scott Dann header glanced out of touch, contentiously stroking the arm of Danny Andrew as it did before later the ball also struck Paul Downing’s arm. Neither earnt the Eagles a penalty.
LINE-UPS
Seconds before half-time, Palace didn’t need refereeing decisions to double their advantage when Meyer nodded home from a looping Andros Townsend header across the box. Doncaster threatened in the second half with a few soft chances however it was Michy Batshuayi who came closest to scoring next when Marosi smothered the ball from his feet after a heavy touch. Despite Doncaster’s second half surge, the Eagles progressed one step closer to Wembley.
