I’M HOPEFUL YOU AND I WILL HAVE SOME NEW FACES TO HAVE A LOOK AT IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS
THE MANAGER 05
WE HAVE PLENTY OF OPTIMISM After the festive period and the FA Cup, this week has seen things return to normal and we’re back in Premier League action against Watford this afternoon.
I would like to welcome Javi Gracia, his players, staff and the Watford supporters to south London for what promises to be a tough game. They have impressed this season and go into this encounter sitting in a hugelycreditable eighth place, and have proved difficult opposition for the teams they have faced so far. However, we have plenty of optimism ourselves having lost just once in our last six games including last weekend’s FA Cup success against Grimsby Town. It was a test for us as they were always going to sit back and soak up pressure all game, and even more so when they were reduced to 10 men after just two minutes, so we had to be patient. I have to give credit to the players as they didn’t let the missed opportunities affect them and kept plugging away. They were finally rewarded thanks to another goal from Jordan Ayew, and you can see what a couple of those have done for his confidence. While our margin of victory could, and probably should, have been greater, you only have to look at some of the other third round matches where top-flight clubs slipped up against opposition from League One and League Two, so we’re just happy to have advanced to the next stage. It was especially pleasing as we managed to give a lot of our squad a break after playing so many games in a short space of time. Now that congestion is out of the way, it has been nice to enjoy a normal week’s build-up on the training ground as we prepare for this afternoon’s game.

January also means that the transfer window is open, and we have seen some players depart which should free up some room for us to add to our squad. I know that the chairman and sporting director have been busy as usual trying to identify and bring the right type of players to this club, so I’m hopeful you and I will have some new faces to have a look at in the next couple of weeks. For now, I am just focussing on matters on the field and trying to get a win from today’s game. Only seven points separate ourselves from Watford who are six places above us in the table, so we know that a win could go a long way to helping us close the gap on the teams above us, while pull us a little further away from the relegation zone. Like last season, our primary goal is to ensure that we remain in the Premier League so we want to achieve that as soon as possible and then look to try and better our 11th-place finish last term. I believe that with plenty of hard work and backing from the stands, we can do both of those and ensure the second half of the campaign is enjoyable for all involved. Enjoy the game!
WE ARE STARTING TO SHOW THAT TEAMS COMING TO SELHURST DON’T FIND IT EASY
THE CAPTAIN 07
we're going to give everything to win It was good to have a little rest by missing the Grimsby game last weekend, and after some extra work at the training ground and some time off, I’m ready for some new challenges.
The match was a very tough one for us, even after they got the red card after two minutes because everyone expected it was then going to be very easy. It wasn’t; it was like the game against Cardiff City where we had to score the first goal and things would open up, but in the end we got what we wanted and we’re into the next round. It was also great for Jordan to score in his second game in a row, which is also good for us as a team because we need his confidence. We didn’t have a lot of luck with the draw as we got Tottenham Hotspur, but at least it is at Selhurst Park which means that we have more of a chance to beat them and advance in the competition. We have seen a few players depart the club recently who were part of our dressing room and they’re all really good guys, so we are sad that they have left our group. Jonny is a permanent deal while Alex and Punch are just for six months, but it’s good for all of them because they have new chances in their careers and can get some minutes, so I’m happy for them because it’ll be good for them. It is sometimes hard to see players leave suddenly, but that’s football. One day you can be with your best friend at training, and the next day you might not see him for months or even years. It’s a hard part of the job but we are professionals and we have to adapt, but there are emotions too because you make a lot of good friendships in the game. Hopefully we can see some new players come in

during the rest of the month to boost the squad, but I don’t pay too much attention to it all. I’m not the kind of person who looks for transfer rumours in newspapers or on TV, but sometimes I might hear things in the dressing room or watching the TV at the training ground and find out which players might be moving clubs. However, I did move here in January myself and it can be tough. I had spent some beautiful years in Greece and suddenly moved to a new club, so within 24 hours everything in your life has changed. Once again, that’s part of football and if you can adapt as soon as possible, then it’s much easier for you and your family. Today we face Watford and they are a very good team who I respect a lot with a good manager, so it will 100% be a tough game for us. However, we are starting to show that teams coming to Selhurst don’t find it easy and we’re going to give everything to win, which would mean a lot as we would have backed up the win against Wolves that started the year. Make some noise!
IT IS NOT AN OVERSTATEMENT TO SAY THAT WE WOULD NOT BE IN OUR SIXTH SUCCESSIVE SEASON IN THE TOP-FLIGHT WITHOUT JASON
THE CHAIRMAN 09
Selhurst will give us the edge I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the supporters, staff and players of Watford, and greetings to all Palace fans here today.
Last week we witnessed a proper cup tie. Credit must go to Grimsby Town for putting up such a fight especially with 10 men for so long, and also to their fans for packing out the Arthur Wait Stand. Watching the draw on Monday night was exciting as we were left in the pot with just Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to be picked out, and while Spurs at home is a tough draw it will be a fantastic occasion and a packed Selhurst will give us the edge we need! Last week, Jonny Williams left the club having been with us since the age of eight. Jonny is a fantastic person and is popular with players, staff and fans alike, so he will be sorely missed around the place. I’m sure I speak for everyone in wishing him well at Charlton, and also on international duty with Wales. We also took the tough decision to loan Jason Puncheon to Huddersfield Town for the rest of the season and the remainder of his contract. Personally I can’t thank him enough; he has been inspirational both on and off the pitch and truly cares, and he is someone I am sure we will see back at the club one day. It is not an overstatement to say that we would not be in our sixth successive season in the top-flight without him, but we will save the proper goodbye for another time to give him the send-off he truly deserves. With Christian and Connor back in contention, everyone felt it important that Alexander got as many starts as possible, and to facilitate that he has gone out on loan to Gent. We will be in close contact with

him throughout, and wish him all the best for his spell in Belgium. I’d urge everyone here today to join us again at Selhurst this coming Friday night for the FA Youth Cup as we host Bolton Wanderers. These nights are special occasions for the club, and of course for the players involved. We had thousands turn up to support our youngsters last season and it made a huge impact on them as they continue their development. Palace Ladies recently welcomed back Gemma Bryan after her summer move to Charlton. Don’t forget Gemma scored more than 100 goals for us in less than 70 games, so having her back is fantastic for the club. She had an immediate impact by netting in the win over Millwall last weekend, and I hope that result can provide a much-needed boost to the squad as they look to climb away from a relegation battle. Turning attention to today’s opponents, Watford have become a very impressive outfit and currently sit justifiably in eighth place. We always seem to have extremely hard-fought games against them and I have no doubt that today will be the same. As always, the atmosphere you create can make a huge difference, so throw everything you can behind Roy’s men. Up The Palace!
10 TODAY'S GAME
Crystal Palace v Watford // Saturday 12th January // Selhurst Park
Today's game A confidence-filled Palace take on Watford this afternoon hoping to continue their good recent form against one of their favourite opponents in SE25 during the past few years. Having won three and drawn one of their last five Premier League games, the Eagles welcome the Hornets who have won just one of their last eight trips to Selhurst Park stretching back 11 years. However, this season’s side are a different prospect. Javi Gracia’s team have already picked up 15 points on their travels this season which is just one less than they managed in the whole of last term, and are unbeaten in their last three away league games. Their tally of 29 points from 21 top-flight games has only been bettered once before in their history, back in 1982/83 when they finished runners-up. That should mean for an even tighter meeting than usual between the teams, as each of the last three encounters at Selhurst in the Premier League have seen the victors win by a one-goal margin, and neither side has scored more than twice in those games. However, Roy Hodgson’s in-form Eagles' recent displays have seen them reach six wins from their first 21 games, and only in 2015/16 have they bettered that in a Premier League campaign, giving the Eagles boss plenty of optimism as he hopes to continue their fine start to 2019.
Jordan Ayew has scored more Premier League goals against Watford than he has against any other side, netting in three of his four starts.

Newsroom QUARTET DEPART THE EAGLES Since the opening of the transfer window, four players have left the club, including Jonny Williams whose 17-year spell with Palace came to an end following his switch to Charlton Athletic. The Welshman joined the Eagles aged eight, progressing through the ranks to make his full debut in August 2011. He would feature regularly for the Eagles as they clinched promotion to the Premier League in 2012/13, and played 70 times for the club, scoring once. Speaking about his departure, he said: "It’s a very strange feeling, I don’t think it’ll hit me until I properly leave. But I’ve made some great memories here and met some great people who’ll I’ll stay in touch with. Palace has been my life." Meanwhile, Jason Puncheon has joined Huddersfield Town on loan until the end of the season, while Alexander Sørloth has also made a temporary switch to KAA Gent until the conclusion of the Belgian Pro League campaign. Jordon Mutch has also departed the club by mutual consent. The 27-year-old made 40 appearances for the Eagles, and spent the majority of 2018 on loan at Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps.
PALACE HANDED SPURS CUP TIE After beating Grimsby Town last weekend to reach the FA Cup fourth round, Palace have been handed a home tie against Premier League challengers Tottenham Hotspur later this month. The Eagles last faced Spurs in the competition during their run to the final in 2016 when a Martin Kelly goal beat the Lilywhites at White Hart Lane at the quarter-final stage, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men ran out 1-0 victors in SE25 in the last league meeting back in November. The tie will take place at Selhurst Park on Sunday 27th January, kicking off at 4pm and will be screened live on BT Sport. Tickets for the game are now on sale, and can be purchased from tickets.cpfc.co.uk, on 08712 00 00 81 or at the box office.

U23 & U18 FIXTURE CHANGES
BRYAN REJOINS PALACE LADIES Palace Ladies have signed all-time top goalscorer Gemma Bryan from Charlton Athletic, who re-joins the club having left for the Addicks in the summer. The 31-year-old, who scored 104 goals across three seasons, departed the Eagles in June following the club’s rejected application to join the newly formed Women’s Championship, but following a u-turn that saw the Ladies eventually handed a place in the second tier, Bryan is delighted to return to this corner of south London at the first opportunity. She said: “I’m so excited. I’m really passionate about Crystal Palace FC as a whole, so it’s really, really good to get back. "I just want to get playing amongst our fans again, get back in with the girls again and build upon the points they have got so far this season.”

The development side’s away game at Millwall has been moved to Tuesday 22nd January, kicking off at 1pm at the Lions’ training ground. Meanwhile the under-18s’ fixture home fixture with Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic that were scheduled to take place this month will now be held on Thursday 18th April at 1pm and Saturday 2nd March at 10.45am respectively.
TOWNSEND WINS TWO AWARDS This week saw Andros Townsend pick up both the Premier League's Goal of the Month for his stunning strike against Manchester City, as well as December’s ManBetX Player of the Month, having garnered 43% of the voting. CPFC TO GO CASHLESS To help alleviate queues inside and outside the ground, the food and drink outlets inside Selhurst Park and the Fanzone will be going cashless from the Fulham game on 2nd February instead of today’s game as previously proposed, so please remember to bring your debit or credit card to the game with you.
JEFFREY
On the eve of his second anniversary at Palace, Jeffrey Schlupp now has a magical moment that will ensure his place in Palace folklore for years to come. Ben Mountain chats to the man whose goal kick-started the Eagles’ stunning win against Manchester City last month as he reflects on that memorable afternoon in the north-west.
L UPP
JEFFREY SCHLUPP 17
The high point of Jeffrey Schlupp’s Palace career to date not only coincided with one of the club's brightest highlights from their 10 seasons in the Premier League, but sparked it into life as well. On a drizzly, chilly, pre-Christmas Manchester afternoon, the Eagles travelled north to the sky blue half of the city where they would face the reigning, allconquering champions, Manchester City. It was possibly the sternest test Palace have ever faced in all their years at English football’s top table, given that Pep Guardiola and his team’s swashbuckling football had led them to 100 points the previous campaign and they were trying to improve on what many in the game had labelled as perfection. But, against all odds, Palace won 3-2. And despite it not being the standout moment of an extraordinary affair at the Etihad Stadium, undoubtedly the key point came with Palace trailing 1-0 and Schlupp picking up possession in his own half. The midfielder, with a tight triangle of blue shirts swiftly closing in on him, looked up and launched a clever cross-field ball in the direction of Wilfried Zaha before, out of the eye of the camera, charging downfield. Ending up in line with the home side’s goal on the edge of their penalty box and the ball rolled uneasily into his feet, Schlupp took a left-footed touch, another and then two more to steady himself before pulling the same leg back and arrowing an inch-perfect shot across the face of goal into the outstretched Ederson’s inside netting before wheeling away in celebration, launching himself into the air and allowing the embraces of his teammates to consume him. Perhaps in that moment, though, he didn’t realise quite how significant his equalising effort would become. “Obviously you never go into a game expecting to lose,” he reflected. “But the mentality is different when you’re playing Manchester City away compared to a lesser team at home. “It was a relief for me to score. We needed the three points, there’s no secret about that, so it was a relief. I
PALACE

scored quite soon after they scored their first so it was important too, but it just felt good for me to get onto the scoresheet again. “To be honest, when they got their second, we were looking at the clock! But it was probably worse for the people watching outside of the pitch, because we were in the game and focussed.” And it was that focus which kept Schlupp’s side in the match until the end, securing a victory that will go down forever in Palace history. In spite of the magnitude of the occasion, the team knew that maintaining concentration would be an essential component to taking something from the fixture, and so the build-up to it remained the same as it would before any match. Schlupp offered an insight into a week’s-worth of preparation to face one of the world’s great footballing
YOU NEVER GO INTO A GAME EXPECTING TO LOSE sides. “The build-up was the same for that and for most games, to be honest. We work with the analysis guys early in the week to see how they play and then we go onto the training pitches to see what we can do to limit them. Although I say the build-up is the same, the mentality can be a bit different and you do notice their talent on the pitch.” But City weren’t the only team showcasing their talent that day and one of Schlupp’s teammates in
18 JEFFREY SCHLUPP
particular stands out from the 27 players who competed on the Etihad’s turf. Andros Townsend would ultimately steal the headlines with his Goal of the Seasoncontending 30-yard volley, and it was that, even when exhibited alongside the likes of Sergio Agüero, Kevin de Bruyne and Leroy Sané’s skills, which has stuck in people’s memories from a game that will be deemed a modern day Premier League classic. For Schlupp, Townsend’s moment of magic happened right in front of his eyes. It was so close, in fact, that had he not turned to face the goal, the Ghanaian would have missed it sailing in. Looking back, he said, “You’ll take a bundle or any goal against Man City to be honest, but Andros’ was a screamer. We’ve all seen it; it was a great, great goal. And when those type of goals go in it feels better. But Andros likes to score screamers - he’s scored quite a few recently! We’ve seen him do it before so it was no surprise to us.” That early Christmas present arrived for Palace in the middle of a three-game unbeaten run and at the heart of a packed December which saw the Eagles rack up 10 points from seven games, having taken only nine from their opening 13. Since then, they have conceded just one goal from four games and recorded two wins and a draw in the same stretch of time. Three weeks may have elapsed since the euphoric post-match scenes as Roy Hodgson’s players celebrated with those who had travelled to Manchester, but Schlupp believes the feel-good factor has lingered: “The atmosphere changes after a game like that. It improves in the changing room, everyone’s happier. Really, we want to continue getting wins to keep that up and keep the atmosphere like that.” But experiences like that afternoon could only have been a pipedream for a 10-year-old Schlupp when he left Germany to move with his parents to England. Born into a family that had already uprooted once before from Ghana, his life would change monumentally when those around him upped sticks for the second time.
IT WAS A GREAT GOAL . ANDROS LIKES TO SCORE SCREAMERS
JEFFREY SCHLUPP 21
Ultimately, the move to Blighty would lead to a career playing professional football at the very top of the English game that saw him lay his hands on the most prestigious of awards aged just 23: the Premier League trophy. But that moment simply wouldn’t have been on offer had Schlupp grown up elsewhere. “It was my mum who wanted to move us to Germany so we could lead a more comfortable life," Schlupp revealed. "It was same when we moved to England; she wanted us to have better opportunities.”
I’VE DEFINITELY BEEN TRYING TO ADD GOALS TO MY GAME However, not knowing a word of the language following his 1,000 kilometre upheaval, Schlupp would be forced to rely upon two things to settle in, the first of which was a rather novel form of linguistic education. “I actually learnt a lot from watching cartoons!” he laughed. “You know, just loads of types, all the sorts that kids watch at that age. I also had a German to English translator, so if I didn’t know what a word was, I could just look it up in that. But I didn’t speak a word of English when I first came over.” Schlupp’s family ultimately landed in Milton Keynes, settling there while the Palace star began the long road to making it as a professional footballer with the Leicester City academy, and as with so many children, football would act as a languageless way of integrating,
PALACE

meeting and ultimately, feeling comfortable. “Football definitely helped,” he said. “I started playing it straight away! I joined a team in Milton Keynes and played with them until I was about 12 and then Leicester picked me up.” Years, countless matches and a whole load of cartoons later and Schlupp is now an established Premier League footballer who will celebrate his two-year anniversary in south London the day after the Watford match. Now 26, his game has changed significantly since those early days proving himself to the children around him through his feet whilst his English caught up with his skill. Even now, his style is still progressing. Having not scored for the Eagles in his first season-and-a-half when he typically played at left-back, a switch to midfield for the opening day of this season saw him net at Fulham before later adding two more to his seasonal tally. “I’ve definitely been trying to add goals to my game lately,” he explained. “Because I’ve moved from left-back to left-wing, I’ve been trying to get more because I’m further forward. But it’s not been a big move for me because playing at left-back and left-wing can be quite similar.” The goals may be coming, however, for an older and clearer reason. “I was a striker when I was younger,” Schlupp elaborated. “At Leicester, I went out on loan to Brentford where I scored six goals and when I came back to Leicester, I actually scored a hat-trick on my debut! But I’d gone on tour with the squad [to Sweden] and played left-back there quite a lot and did quite well. “The gaffer, Sven-Göran Eriksson, used to play me there. So in that game where I scored a hat-trick up front on my league debut, I played the last 10 minutes of the match at left-back! I wouldn’t say that attacking is exactly easy for me, but I definitely have a taste for it because I became used to it when I was younger.” Those early days would prove hugely valuable for the Eagles in later years. And after finding the net to kick-start one of their most famous top-flight victories, Palace fans will be grateful to have the former cartoon-watching, footballing protégé Jeffrey Schlupp among their ranks, scoring goals and defeating champions.

100 YEARS OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.
PART XII 1980-1984
28 PROGRAMME HISTORY
1980/81
1981/82
The programme continued in similar vein to the previous one in the First Division but the same number of pages (24) would now cost 5p more at 30p and the club name on the cover was in a different font. It was edited once more by commercial manager Tony Shaw. Again manager Terry Venables opened the inside content with his views, but as the season progressed there would be three managers and two chairmen providing the opening notes. Once more three pages were afforded to the visitors and John Henty provided his ‘Talking Point’ while the historical section was compiled by Rev. Nigel Sands titled ‘Looking Back’. Junior supporters were still provided for with ‘Palace Guard’ and an outside agency added general football news and titbits. The centre pages illustrated a recent game and then came four pages of stats, tables and line-ups that was followed by ‘Palace off the Park’. The programme was completed with a crossword, a two-page player profile and team lineups on the back page.
The programme for 1981/82 suffered following relegation to the Second Division coupled with mounting financial problems and sliding attendance figures, and thus the publication saw a reduction in content to 20 pages but another price hike, to 35p. Style and dimensions remained, although now edited by Mel Priddle, and a rather fussy colour cover for the first few home games later gave way to a much cleaner look as illustrated. The manager started proceedings followed by the section on that day’s visitors including pen pictures. Fans interested in the history of the club were catered for with a ‘Whatever Happened To….’ feature about a former player. Line-ups and statistics were to be found in the centre and there was a numbered series for the ‘Palace Parade’ of current players. Photographic action was supplied by Neil Everitt with ‘Selhurst Scene’ providing news for supporters. A list of items for sale in the club shop included sweatshirts at £6.50 and a Palace pillowcase for £3.50.

It was a return to an oblong size (20cms x 17cms) for this season, again containing 20 pages but this time it cost 40p. Three different action pictures were utilised on the cover as the campaign progressed and the edition pictured is from the final game of the season when victory over Burnley ensured the avoidance of relegation at the Clarets' expense. The production of the programme was now outsourced to an agency to the detriment of the content; the first inkling of this came with no regular page from manager Alan Mullery. ‘Selhurst Park Scene’ highlighted news from around the club followed by ‘Eagles in Action’ depicting one and a half pages of photos from a recent encounter. The visitors were given two pages that usually included a team photo and results, and line-ups for the Eagles were spread across the centre with the reserves’ fixtures and scores on the following page next to ‘Palace Parade’, highlighting a member of the first-team. Rev. Nigel Sands contributed an historical section entitled ‘Looking Back’ but, apart from a page for ‘Palace

A return to a vertical 17cms x 24cms format came with an increase to 28 pages but at the cost of another hike in price, this time by 25% to 50p. Nine pages were now taken up with advertising and the agency responsible for the production contributed a further six generic football pieces that were not about the club. It opened promisingly enough with Mullery now penning a regular column that was followed by ‘Selhurst Scene’ and ‘Centrestage’ which portrayed a member of the first-team. In the last quarter of the programme came ‘Eagle Echoes’ about a notable past player and a Q&A session with a Palace player entitled ‘Personal File’. Two pages were filled with details on the opponents and another two for Neil Everitt’s ‘Eagles in Action’ while ‘Statistics’ completed the inside pages with the teams on the back page. However, despite the content, throughout the programme there was no mention of how to contact the club nor ticket or travel details for forthcoming games, and quite frankly it was a poor product.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? On a glorious sunny bank holiday afternoon in May 2013, Palace edged out today’s opponents in the Championship play-off final to reach the Premier League where they have remained ever since. While some of the protagonists of that day could feature this afternoon, others have found new homes in all four corners of the globe, and here we take a look at where they can be found nearly six years on.

Released by Palace a year after the final, Gabbidon returned to hometown club Cardiff City for a season that also saw him named interim boss in September 2014 following Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s dismissal. He retired in 2015 and now works for BBC Radio Wales.

SIXTH SEASON IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE
The manager Having spent his entire 15-year career in his native Spain, Gracia took his first step into coaching with Villarreal’s youth sides before working his way up from the third tier of his homeland. He would reach the top-flight with Almeria in 2013 before spending time in La Liga with Osasuna and Malaga; latterly leading to eighth and ninth-place finishes. After time in Russia with Rubin Kazan, Gracia was named Watford boss just under 12 months ago, where he was named Premier League Manager of the Month for August.
Club legend Watford’s record holder for both appearances and goals, the striker helped lift the club from the Fourth Division to the top-flight during the 1970s and 1980s, and won the Golden Boot in 1982/83 at the end of his first season at that level. That led to an England call-up and a move to AC Milan but he would return to Vicarage Road after one season in Italy, the second of three spells with the Hornets. His 503rd and final appearance came in 1992, during which time he scored 186 goals.

Last season saw the Hornets skipper become just the fifth player to score a century of Watford goals, and he started 2019 with a brace at Bournemouth and a goal against Woking to take his seasonal tally to six. Released by Aston Villa as a junior, the striker got his break at Walsall before winning a move to Watford in 2010. After initially struggling to find the net, Deeney fired his side into the Premier League with 21 strikes in 2014/15, and the net has continued to ripple for the frontman ever since. Things you didn't know... ABOUT WATFORD
s r e t a W s i r Ch By
Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Watford.
Watford FC were formed in 1898 as an amalgamation of two clubs, West Herts and Watford St Mary’s. West Herts had actually started life as Watford Rovers in 1881 but were only able to play friendly matches under its conditions of using the Earl of Essex’s estate to play matches. They turned professional soon before deciding to merge with West Herts.
The iconic yellow shirts, black shorts and red trim did not appear until as late as 1976. The original shirt was a spectacular green, gold and red striped affair, morphing to black and white stripes, before changing to blue shirts and white shorts in 1927. In 1959 the shorts turned black and the shirts gold, before a minor tweak of colour to yellow with red trim in the late 1970s.
Everyone associates the theme tune of popular 1960s police drama Z-Cars with Everton as it is played at the start of every game at Goodison Park as the teams enter the pitch, however, Watford also play this before the start of each match. It was introduced to Vicarage Road in October 1963 by then-manager Bill McGarry after a home defeat to Peterborough United and seemed to bring the team luck as they were unbeaten at home for over a year after the tune’s introduction.

CHRIS WATERS 51
There are a few clubs who have experienced the true highs and lows of the Football League, and the Hornets are certainly one of those. From the depths of despair at the bottom of the Fourth Division in the 1970s, Watford rapidly ascended the leagues under the guidance of Graham Taylor, and indeed hit first place in the old First Division in 1982. One player who experienced life with the Hornets in 92nd and 1st place in the football pyramid was former Palace junior Ross Jenkins.
The M1 or Beds-Herts derby between Luton Town and Watford has been keenly contested 118 times since 1885. It really hotted up following a notorious game in April 1969 when three players were sent off in a match in which the Hornets had already secured promotion to the Second Division. The last derby between the sides separated by 19 miles was 13 years ago, and the Hatters hold the ascendency with 53 wins to the Hornets’ 36.
The Hornets and Eagles made history in March 1994 when Bruce Dyer became the first ÂŁ1 million teenage transfer when he moved from Vicarage Road to Selhurst Park. Dyer had only made 38 appearances for Watford before the move a month before his 19th birthday, and the striker went on to score 44 goals for Palace.
The Holmesdale terrace is fondly remembered by so many, but it was Watford who had the honour of being the final opposition to play in front of it before its demolition. That day in May 1994 saw the Eagles faithful celebrate promotion to the Premier League but the Hornets won 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Andy Hessenthaler and Tommy Mooney, which did little to spoil the party.

Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that saw the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

n adding machine would have been needed at Selhurst Park if Crystal Palace had been able to take a reasonable percentage of the chances that went their way in Saturday’s Second Division tilt with last-placed Aston Villa. Palace created chances by the hatful, tossed them away by the bucketload and missed a great opportunity to better their goal average, a factor that may count for so much this season. Many of the happenings were incredible. Admittedly, the woodwork intervened on a couple of occasions, but the number of times the ball hurtled inches over the top or past an upright was almost uncountable. Bobby Woodruff, for example, did not notch one goal, yet he could have set a personal record! Villa came up with their moments to suggest they are not a hopeless case if the money is spent wisely, and they undoubtedly possessed the match star in young John Dunn who made some positively brilliant saves to foil Palace’s forwards, and his positioning and anticipation kept the tally down, along with the many misses, of course. The crowd was only 11,071 strong, but a good portion stayed behind to give Dunn a rousing ovation at the end. Kember opened it all up by heading wide in the first minute. Then the list swelled. Jackson hit a fine shot that Dunn parried and Aitken turned behind for a
corner... Jackson sent in a fine low drive, equally finely saved at a post by Dunn... Woodruff had a header that Dunn put behind for a corner... Woodruff from the six-

yard line hit a post with a shot... Tony Taylor blasted a shot that Dunn, cutting the angle well, against parried. Meanwhile, Villa made two dangerous raids. Ferguson, clean through, placed a shot outside the post, and Martin took a tumble inside the penalty area when tackled by Blyth. Referee Mr T. Reynolds awarded a penalty, but Anderson’s low drive was just touched by John Jackson and a post did the rest. The spell was broken in the 18th minute in a more simple fashion when Woodruff’s long, probing throw bounced over to Colin Taylor who smartly drove in a low shot. This came seconds after Sewell had sent in a scorching ground-shot that Dunn saw late, but still held. Still the sequence continued. Dunn fisted a Woodruff attempt over and forced a Kember shot behind, but he was beaten again in the 62nd minute when he could only half-check a Jackson shot and Tony Taylor was there to tap in his first goal for the club. There were gasps of astonishment when Villa cut one back in the 74th minute. Slack marking from a free-kick allowed Martin to nip unmolested through the

penalty area and turn the ball into the net. But Palace were not to be thwarted now, and Dunn made his only major error when he dropped Woodruff’s long cross and Hoy gleefully netted – also his first goal for the club. When Colin Taylor hit a fast, low cross into the far corner of the net in the 87th minute, it looked all over, but Villa had one more surprise in store when Edwards, their hardest-working on-field player, surprised John Jackson with a searing drive from 25 yards that raced into the net. A decisive win, then, and one that should have been even more so, but the ways of soccer are such that one wondered what would have been the outcome had that penalty gone in... Palace – Jackson (J.), Sewell, Loughlan, Hoy, McCormick, Blyth, Taylor (T.), Kember, Jackson (C.), Woodruff, Taylor (C.). Villa – Dunn, Wright, Aitken, Edwards, Turnbull, Chambers, Ferguson, Broadbent, Godfrey, Martin, Anderson.

Story of the
Season Part 4
D
ecember 1978 began with the Eagles top of the Second Division but only ahead of Stoke City on goal difference with eight other clubs close behind. One of these was Newcastle United who were the visitors to Selhurst Park at the start of the month where the only moment of class came just before half-time when Mike Elwiss headed home a hard low cross from Terry Fenwick in a somewhat dour game that the Eagles should have won more easily. It was Elwiss’ fourth goal in four games since returning from injury, who was still worrying about seeing a specialist about a knee issue that had troubled him earlier in the season. Another team with promotion ideas followed a week later with a trip to Notts County. Newcomer Tony Hazell continued at right-back with Fenwick covering for the missing Peter Nicholas in another somewhat tetchy encounter where thrills were hard to come by in a goalless draw, with manager Terry Venables probably happy to come away with a point. It was a much better performance when lowly Leicester City came to SE25 on Saturday 16th December as Hazell made way for the returning Nicholas. Jim Cannon opened the scoring midway through the first half with a headed goal from a corner then seven minutes later the referee blew his whistle for an infringement in the Foxes’ penalty area. Most
thought it was for a foul by David Swindlehurst on the visitors’ keeper Mark Wallington but the official had noted a push on the Palace player immediately beforehand, and the striker took the spot-kick himself to claim his 11th goal of the campaign. In the second half the Eagles appeared to ease off and were punished 19 minutes after the restart when Larry May reduced the arrears only for the team to step up a gear again and four minutes later Elwiss turned and put in a shot from 20 yards to seal a 3-1 win. Palace made their first league visit to the Abbey Stadium two days before Christmas Day to face home draw specialists Cambridge United and that was again the outcome with another goalless away day that witnessed Steve Kember making his 250th first-team

appearance. Paul Hinshelwood returned at right-back after eight weeks out with a knee injury but more worrying was the withdrawal of Elwiss seven minutes before the break with the same knee complaint. It would spell the end of his first-team career with the Eagles just as he was proving to be money well spent, and those lucky enough to see him play during his short time in SE25 will know what a skilful player he was. Boxing Day saw Selhurst Park welcome Bristol Rovers with Ian Walsh replacing Elwiss. The team started brightly as the Welshman hit the crossbar and Jerry Murphy had a shot cleared off the line in the first 15 minutes, but after that Palace seemed to lose their way and six minutes into the second half Steve White sidestepped Cannon to score and reduce the lead at the top to one. The next home game followed four days later against Orient whose returning duo of defender Bill Roffey and goalkeeper John Jackson thwarted any attempt for their former club get back to winning ways.

A goal from Vince Hilaire midway through the first half was all the Eagles had to show for their domination with Jackson pulling off two tremendous saves. Murphy had to be substituted at half-time which seemed to affect the team and Orient, who had come with the aim of just defending, equalised with only 17 minutes left.

What was it like being a teenager and trying to make it at a club like Palace filled with established professionals? It was proper old school. When you got a chance to come from the youth team and train with the main group it was such a special thing, but they knew if you were being given the chance to step up then you were looking to take their places. Getting involved on a matchday, being on the bench and then getting the call to go on was just so special; a magical time where all your dreams are coming true. When you pull on the shirt and go on out there it is scary, but the most exciting thing ever. You came through alongside players who also enjoyed excellent careers, what was the secret to your success? The step up is difficult; you play in front of big crowds with added responsibility so you have to deal with the pressure at a young age. Chris Powell was very levelheaded and Richard Shaw was strong and powerful and everyone knew he was going to make it. Gareth Southgate was a year younger and people like Simon Osborn and Simon Rodger were also making those same moves up the ladder. Thinking back, we were all strong-minded and driven individuals, and desperate to carve out careers for ourselves.
You debuted in January 1987 but it took a while for you to become a regular. How was that? It was frustrating because I had to be patient and go out on loan. I was just desperate to play and I can remember Steve Coppell asking: “do you want to play down the left or as a striker?” but I didn’t really care, I just wanted a shirt and get on there and play.

THE GLORY YEARS 61
The play-offs were a new concept back then, how did the squad deal with them? The two-legged tie gave the players a different type of psychology to play with as their minds had to be adjusted to the games ahead of them. It was something which we embraced well and gave us something to aim for as the season went on. Any player will tell you that winning them is just the best feeling, and credit to our group because we showed belief to come from behind in both games and take the club into the First Division. I was happy to get the chance to create, track back and do whatever was needed in a game when I was called upon. As a winger, it was special to know I had created the chance for the team to win a game. I wasn’t as selfish as I would be now, and I wouldn’t be as easily bullied by those two brilliant players up front! Promotion was the culmination of five years’ hard work by Steve Coppell, how was he to work under at that time? What Steve achieved coming in at the age of 28 was just incredible, he bought a fresh outlook when he moved into management and the club just took off. What he was able to get out of the players that he signed from a tactical and organisational side of it was amazing and together with all his hard work and planning. He knew what was possible from the group of lads that he had, he just had the perfect methods on the training ground and then at the end of the week the lads responded in the right way because everyone loved playing for Steve.

Before kick-off of a home match against Chelsea in March 1983, Palace recognised Upper Norwood’s Dee Thompson who was one of the first female officials to officiate fixtures in the Southern Area Sunday Leagues - a far cry from her day job as a nurse. She also worked at Palace in the club shop and the Players’ Lounge, and sadly recently passed away.

Representing Palace is important for me because my whole family support them. I grew up around Sanderstead, and I’ve always wanted to be a footballer. My dad is a Palace fan; he bought me a kit as a baby and I had a season ticket in the Family Stand. My first big match as a fan was the play-off final against West Ham United. We got the coach to Cardiff and I remember that was an atmosphere. I was only about six or seven and I remember it was so loud. Because I was focussed I didn’t feel too excited when I came on for my debut. When Roy Hodgson told me I was coming on, it was surreal. I could hear the Middlesbrough fans cheering, there was a drum going and I thought: “wow, this is what it’s all about”. It was a great feeling. There’s a definite difference playing with a crowd, but you do get in the zone and block it out a bit. When you play in pre-season against non-league teams and there are only a couple of hundred fans, then that’s when you really hear the names and stuff. I tend to laugh it off, it doesn’t affect me. My dad was very emotional following my debut. He and my sister went up to Middlesbrough and I remember when I got home, Mum said: “Dad was nearly crying on the phone to me!” When I saw him later that night, I just gave him a big hug. He said: “I’m so proud of you, son, well done. Keep working hard and you’ll get more opportunities like that.”

The under-18s coming through into the development side are doing very well. It takes time to adapt, and you learn through experience. I remember my first under-23s game; I was 16 or 17 playing against Charlton Athletic and the manager at the time said to me that Ricardo Vaz Te would be playing up front. He just said: “make sure you’re ready”. It was a really good experience and I did well because he didn’t score! The under-23s have done well with a changing, youthful squad. We’re third in the table and we’ve played with quite a mixed team. We’ve had some firstteam players for some games and under-18s for some of the others, so it’s quite hard to get any consistency. The first-team are really good; they bring experience and they help with the game management side of things as they’re always giving you advice. Now, it’s our job as the older ones to help the younger players develop. Whatever happens next for me, I want to keep improving day in, day out so that I can be my best. I don’t know if I’ll be going out on loan or staying here so we’ll have to wait and see, but whatever happens I’ll work hard and fight in a new squad to play regularly, or if I stay here I get to train with the first-team and learn from the gaffer. Both paths have their own challenge as going out on loan will be completely different to the under-23s. There are different physicalities and different paces, but that excites me.

Palace ended 2018 with a defeat at the hands of Chelsea as N’Golo Kante’s 50th minute strike proved to be enough for the Blues to win this capital clash. They could have found their way in front before the Frenchman’s strike with Olivier Giroud having the first of two goals disallowed for offside before Willian bent a free-kick against the post, which was also struck by Ross Barkley with an acrobatic attempt from a corner. However, five minutes after the restart David Luiz chipped a pass into the box and Kante made a

great run to squeeze between the defensive line, and his low shot had just enough power to trickle over the whitewash and into the net despite Vicente Guaita getting a hand to it. Sights of goal were a rarity for Palace all afternoon, but in the dying stages Luka Milivojevic pumped a long free-kick into the box which was nodded by James Tomkins to Connor Wickham, but after doing well to bring the ball down, the striker hammered it over the crossbar from close range.

Jordan Ayew found the perfect time to net his first goal for Palace as he sparked a late surge that saw his team begin the new year in the best way possible. Despite the pre-match flames and fireworks, the game took a while to heat up but on 36 minutes Ivan Cavaleiro’s corner was met by an unmarked Wily Boly and the ball fell kindly to Matt Doherty to nod goalwards but the full-back couldn’t hit the target when well-placed. Opportunities continued to be far and few between

as the game entered the final stages, however seven minutes from time Patrick van Aanholt saw a cross-shot screw perfectly into the path of Ayew, who took an excellent touch before coolly firing past Rui Patricio. Vicente Guaita was called into his first save of the night in stoppage-time when Ruben Neves saw a deflected low drive head goalwards, and that proved vital as moments later Wilfried Zaha was tripped in the box by Ryan Bennett and Luka Milivojevic drove home the penalty with the last kick of the game.
