ROY HODGSON

This afternoon marks the first of 38 steps in another challenging season of Premier League football. It is one that I hope will entertain supporters and further continue Crystal Palace’s success in the country’s top tier. As ever, our first priority will be to secure Premier League status for an eighth consecutive season as early as possible. For this club to be able to class itself as a regular fixture in the Premier League is a huge achievement but it is one that I, the team and the boardroom do not take for granted. Against Everton today, we will be looking to pick up where we left off last season with our entertaining 5-3 victory over AFC Bournemouth on the final day. It was a fine performance by the entire team and was a wonderful end to our campaign. However today marks a clean slate and last season’s successes will make no difference

against this afternoon’s talented opposition, who finished the season strongly themselves and have since made further valuable additions to their squad. We have, of course, been severely hampered in our pre-season preparations by injuries to key players and absentees at the AFCON tournament. We thought that this would provide an ideal opportunity for some of our talented U23 squad to ‘step up to the plate’ but, annoyingly enough, of the seven players who accompanied us to an early tournament in Switzerland no fewer than four managed to pick up injuries and miss the ensuing games. The Premier League season is a marathon and a strong and resilient squad of players, who are of Premier League class, are needed to see us through to our goal. On that subject, I am delighted to welcome Gary Cahill to the squad;

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

a player I know well from my days as England manager. I made him England captain during my time with the national side, therefore I know the quality he brings in terms of experience and leadership. He is a great addition for us and offers another option at a time where Mamadou Sakho is working himself back to full fitness and James Tomkins is still sidelined due to injury. Furthermore, I’m really pleased we have been able to add two more midfielders to our squad before the transfer deadline. James McCarthy is a player I’ve admired for a very long time, and the addition of Victor Camarasa, a strong and technically gifted midfielder, will offer us creativity in this area. Today, I hope we give you a start to the season that your loyal and vocal support deserves. Enjoy the game!

05

For the return of Premier League football to Selhurst Park today, I would like to welcome Marco Silva, his team and the club’s supporters on what promises to be a very competitive start to the new campaign.

The Hertha Berlin game was of course a disappointing result but the game can be a good lesson for us. We can take a lot of positives from the negatives in terms of working further on certain things back at the training ground that didn’t go to plan; I’m pleased this happened before the season starts, it helps our preparation. We have had a busy week in the transfer window and it’s always great to see new faces join. I like the added competition and the numbers were needed. I didn’t know Gary Cahill personally before but when we speak about quality players and bringing in players to improve our squad he is exactly that; he played for Chelsea for many years, and Gary was captain there which means he has character, a quality that is so important to have in our group. Playing for one of the top six clubs in England, having won all that he’s won, I am delighted to

welcome Gary to Palace. Victor Camarasa and James McCarthy also joined to provide us with extra choices in the squad and flexibility in formations. James has many years of Premier League experience and that will be important to us during a long season. And Victor I was impressed with last year at Cardiff City’s; he will bring creativity to our play. I look to forward to fully welcoming them to this great club and working with them further in training next week after being impressed with what I have seen so far at Copers Cope. We start our Premier League season today and as always the aim is to improve and go further than previous seasons. This will be tough to do as last season was the club’s highest points total in a Premier League season, but we believe in doing this as long

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

as our squad remains fit and healthy and we avoid injuries like other years, as it makes it difficult to try different formations and tactics. Going into the season we take plenty of lessons from last time, and most important is for us to start well to avoid any stressful situations later on when it comes down to remaining in the league. Starting well won’t be easy, though, with Everton today’s opponents. They’re a good team, who have signed a lot of players this transfer window and have spent a lot of money. We expect a fierce game but based on last season we were unlucky not to take something from Goodison Park with two late goals conceded and back at Selhurst it was a solid 0-0. However, starting off the new season at home in front of our fans we expect a good performance and start. Make some noise!

07

Today begins another season for us in the Premier League, an achievement I am proud to have played a part in as captain. Myself and the squad cannot wait to get going again at our home of Selhurst.

STEVE PARISH

May I extend the warmest of welcomes to our three latest players to join the squad in Gary, Victor and James. Gary brings with him almost unparalleled experience in the Premier League – he is a proven winner and leader who is absolutely dedicated to prolonging his career at the very highest level. Victor is a real talent, someone we’re genuinely excited about having watched him so closely during his impressive spell with Cardiff last season. James is a player Roy, Dougie and I have all long admired. He is an all-action footballer, someone who will absolutely give it everything whenever he is on the pitch. It was great to spend time with each of them, and it was clear to me that they are all hugely up for the challenge ahead. Along with Jordan and Stephen, who I welcomed on these pages last week for the Hertha

game, I think we have five great additions to the group. I think I speak for everyone at the club when I say that it’s fantastic to finally be back in action. We have an immensely talented group of players and a brilliant backroom team, and we really must not forget just how enormous an achievement it is to be entering our seventh consecutive season in the top-flight. As I said last year, every team can beat everyone else – there is no such thing as an easy game. The three new teams joining the league played some outstanding football last year, and I have no doubt it’s going to be even more competitive than ever before. Today is the first time that VAR will be used in the league, it’s well documented that I have been one of the more reluctant to adopt it. However I think the year of

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

testing in the FA Cup and the work I have witnessed by Mike Riley and the Premier League that’s gone into refining how it will operate means that we are well placed to gain the maximum benefit with the minimum disruption. Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your immense support this summer - yet again you’ve come out in force buying your season tickets, memberships and shirts in record numbers, and I know you’ll help make Selhurst Park as loud as ever – not just today, but throughout the season. It is greatly appreciated by everyone here at the club. Up the Palace!

09

Welcome to each and every supporter here at Selhurst Park for today’s Premier League opener against Everton.

A boy from working class neighbourhood Barrowfield, James McArthur opens up to Ben Mountain about an upbringing that is reflected in the way he plays: steely, determined and grounded.

portrayals from No Mean City or Trainspotting, the former set in Scotland’s biggest city and the latter filmed there. Though the image McArthur recalls - not warped by an endless monochrome sky, and surely more accurate - is far from the dirt, violence and destitution depicted in Herbert Kingsley Long and Irvine Welsh’s social critiques. Instead, the 31-year-old portrays a near-utopic scene, smiling as he recounts childhood which he calls “a lot different” to today.

tag, running around for hours. You used to try and find anywhere to play; literally 22 players, 26 players, anything to go and play. “If there weren’t many people playing you’d play your mates at what we called ‘Records’. You cross the ball in, try and score and if the ‘keeper catches it you go in goal. Games like that. People were climbing trees in the back and just doing random things you would never, ever think about doing. Doing things you’d never see now. I’d never, ever change my

“WE PLAYED FOOTBALL IN THE STREETS EVERY SINGLE DAY, PLAYING ON GRASS AND GRAVEL PITCHES, PLAYING TAG, RUNNING AROUND FOR HOURS”

“Down in the streets on a nice day you’d go round on your bike, round in this square, building ramps to jump over,” he recalls before quizzing: “Did you ever used to get a can or a carton and stick it in your bike wheel? You’d be hearing stuff like that. “There would be ice cream vans going around every 20 minutes and we’d be trying to get sweets, trying to get sugar just to keep you buzzing. upbringing: it helped me become the person I am.” But away from the innocence of a child’s recess, the realities, grit and perpetual challenges of Barrowfield are today reflected in McArthur both on and off the pitch: steely, determined and grounded in every sense. An international career, FA Cup title and 10 seasons of topflight football later, and McArthur still credits his founding years for a remarkable ability to keep both feet on the ground in the face of rapid

Glasgow, 1987. It’s mid-autumn in the city’s East End, one of the most violent areas of Scotland, and James McArthur has just been born. Elsewhere and only days after, two men are murdered a dozen miles from the newborn’s home. Gangs rule the streets and the emergence of Class A drugs take their first grasp of the criminal market in working class neighbourhood Barrowfield. “There would be different ‘schemes’, different areas fighting with each other,” McArthur explains. “When you think about gangs you think drugs. This was over nothing. There would be 15 boys and 15 boys, not running up and batting each other but throwing bricks and running and throwing bricks and running. It was just because you were from a different area. That’s the way it was in Glasgow.” But as time went by, a young McArthur would strive to look past the violence which enshrouded the safety of his family home and begin chasing a dream: life as a professional footballer. 20 years on, the Glaswegian stretches back on a sofa in Crystal Palace’s kit room, the last player still on-site, and reflects on his upbringing with vivid recollections from 400-miles away. Naturally, a childhood at the zenith of Glasgow’s violence tempts writers into graphic parallels with iconic, more dramatic

and unwavering success. “There were a lot of temptations that I stayed away from,” he reflects. “Some of my family are still there, it’s part of their life, part of my life that will never, ever go and it’s one of the upbringings that will never let myself or anyone from that area get ahead of themselves. “I was lucky because of the

upbringing, the family and the friends that I had around me. If I ever did try and get too big for my boots then I knew that I would be shot back down and brought down to earth by the people that I had around me, not that I would ever do it - I’m not the type of person. “You appreciate things that you’ve got in life. Most people that came from Barrowfield when I was growing up didn’t have anything really; no money, very poor lifestyles. I think a lot of footballers, were coming from those backgrounds.

They were instrumental in keeping me safe, keeping me on the right path, keep pushing me to do the right things. “If I ever wanted to go out, Dad would always make me aware of how much commitment he’d devoted to running me about for 10 years. At the age of 16, let’s say, people want to go and have a

15

“In my experience of rough areas back in my day, people have got that extra drive, extra bit of character and extra determination and I think at one point in the Premier League there were six or seven managers from Glasgow. It was all the same upbringing most people had. It’s a certain type of character that you need to be to not ‘survive’, but do well in life. “There are so many kids now that get a couple of games and players, crowds, fans, anything, build them up to think: ‘I’m going to be the next big thing.’ We speak about what advice would we give and one of the things is to always keep your feet on the ground.” Managing to keep both boots firmly planted, McArthur rose through Scotland’s demanding youth system, competing at four different setups before ultimately making his breakthrough with Hamilton Academical aged 17. A recurring aspect of the Scotsman’s ability to keep his head down and focussed on forging the career he has today was the ballast provided by his mother and father. The son of a scrapman, the 31-yearold credits his parents for his career and character to this day. “Mum was looking after me and my brother and my dad was the one who had the income to try and support everyone,” he explains. “If it wasn’t for them then I wouldn’t be where I am today. They keep

need to think about,” he says. “I came from a small club at Hamilton so I was always trying to get better, trying to do better. If I had a small milestone that I played my first game or scored my first goal, I always had that drive to do better and do better again and do better. “I’d think: ‘Have I scored my first goal? I want to play 10 games now in the first team. I want to play every game. I want to become a major player. I want to move down south. I want to play in the best league I can possibly play in.’ “I always want to do better, I

aged 20, captaining the side in the same year he earned his Scotland Under-21 debut and later winning the Scottish First Division as a nominee for Player of the Year, McArthur could certainly claim he had realised his dream from the gravel pitches of Barrowfield. But that upbringing still bears its mark today, with McArthur refusing to indulge in his own achievements. “I’ve tried to not worry or think too much about things that I don’t

always want to focus on winning and doing whatever I can to win. Do I think by going to a stadium and looking and thinking, ‘wow, this is amazing: look at that and look at this,’ that that’s going to help me win a football match? No, it’s not.” A mixture of parental support, inner strength and a toughening first few years, McArthur is every bit the product of his upbringing: “I wouldn’t change it for the world,” he says.

drink or they want to do the wrong things, he’d say: ‘you’re training tomorrow, you’re doing this or doing that. Keep doing the right things.’ “They were quite strict but they needed to be. I’ve always said to Dad that he needed to be strict in keeping me away from all the wrong things. There were gangs fighting and all of this going on around you. I wouldn’t be the person and have the career that I have now if it wasn’t for my mum and dad.” Vice-captain of Hamilton

EAGLE EYE WITH PALACE TV'S CHRIS GRIERSON

Just when I thought the greatest achievement of my life was not crying when Alan Pardew picked apart my novice questioning in postmatch interviews, I’ve been given my own page in the programme. Throughout the season I’ll be opening the doors to Palace TV (then closing it quickly behind me as my editors are very sensitive to daylight and unconditioned air) and possibly – once I’ve plucked up the courage – expressing an opinion or two for the first time in five years. But let’s not get carried away just yet; this week I’m playing it as safe as a Steven Gerrard haircut. MEDIA ACCESS DAY Once every August all the broadcasters pitch up at Palace with their green screens to capture footage of every first team player.

Until recently this entailed just players walking moodily up to the camera on video for those team formation announcements you see on Sky Sports, some photography headshots and then saying their name to camera for commentators to watch and still pronounce Milivojevic wrong. We used to

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

do it all in the gym at the training ground and it didn’t take long at all. Now it’s a far bigger beast. This year our Press Officer Harriet used the dome up at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre as there were so many requirements from multiple broadcasters and the extra space was very much needed.

As the players arrived, they changed into the away kit and headed over to the first Palace TV station. Those of you on Twitter will have seen our goal celebration GIFs last season and this year we filmed those and more, including walk-ups for big screen team announcement, some funny facials to arm our social media team with throughout the season and even players spraying tickets around like the Wolf of Wall Street. The players then moved onto Premier League Productions and Getty Images before changing into the home kit. In the red and blue stripes they performed a mix of standard and wacky poses for Getty, Sky Sports, the new broadcast partner Amazon and Premier League Productions. Whilst most of the guys then finished off at the Palace

TV home kit station, 10 players and the manager filmed different interviews and features with BT, Comcast and Sky Sports. If that wasn’t enough for everyone to organise, we got a call mid-morning telling us we needed to head up to Soho for another shoot. Which brings me on to my next subject… TRANSFER ANNOUNCEMENTS Off we sped to the club’s central London offices because Gary Cahill was doing a medical. Contrary to social media and messageboard beliefs, announcements aren’t delayed because we’ve decided to have a sandwich and an oat milk latte before starting the edit. We always do photography and interviews in this gap so we’re ready to go as soon as all the paperwork is complete. There is

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

a lot more paperwork to be sent back and forth than you think so just because you see a journalist say a deal is done, it doesn’t mean it is and we’re then being slow to announce it. The deal isn’t official until it’s on the club website! I’m sure I’ll be banging on about this again in the future but for now I’ve gone over my word count so if you want more of me, listen to the Official Palace Podcast on your favourite podcast provider!

All four of Hodgson’s Premier League wins over Everton have come at home P7 W4 D1 L2

FROM THE DUGOUT

“MOISE [KEAN] IS STRONG, FAST, WITH MANY GOOD QUALITIES AS A STRIKER AND HE IS JUST 19 YEARS OLD. HE HAS TALENT AND IS READY TO WORK."

Everton are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace; winning four and drawing five. Palace have won just one of their previous 10 Premier League matches against Everton at Selhurst Park; this coming in October 1994 thanks to a solitary Andy Preece goal (1-0). On the only previous occasion that Palace and Everton played each other on the opening matchday of a league season, the Eagles won 2-1 at Goodison Park but ended the season bottom of the league (Premier League 1997-98). Everton have kept a clean sheet in eight of their last 11 Premier League games. In 2019 so far, only Man City (12) have recorded more clean sheets in the competition than Everton (10).

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

Including four at the end of last season, this will be Everton’s fifth consecutive Premier League away match in London. Only Leeds United (five between April-September 2001) have had as long a run in the competition’s history. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson has been directly involved in seven Premier League goals against Crystal Palace (three goals, four assists) – only against Manchester United (9) has he had a hand in more. Roy Hodgson has won 25 of his 72 Premier League games as Crystal Palace manager – one more victory will take him ahead of Alan Pardew for most wins at the club in the competition. Five of Everton’s last six Premier League openers have finished level (W1), with four of those draws ending 2-2.

ORCHESTRATOR: GYLFI SIGURÐSSON 40

The 29-year-old Icelandic international tends to occupy the right-hand side of the final third, with the Toffees man making 58% of his passes for Silva’s side in the space occupied by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Martin Kelly in the 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park last season. To put that into context, Sigurðsson’s next most active zone for making passes is between the centre-backs. However, just 18% of his total passes were made in that part of the pitch. To interrupt the supply line to the former Swansea City man, Palace must look to unsettle the

player Marco Silva opts to replace Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park with. The now-PSG player found Sigurðsson nine times in the game in SE25 (more than any other teammate by almost 50%).

TACKLE SUCCESS

Palace

Everton

In the game at Selhurst last season, Everton’s tackle success mainly came down the flanks. Therefore, if Palace are able to dominate the middle of the park and focus on centralising their attacking play through the middle, despite the wealth of pace and trickery on offer for the Eagles out on the wings in the likes of Townsend, it could unsettle Silva’s men.

41

AVERAGE POSITIONS The Toffees effectively played without a main focal point, with Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Bernard a fluid trio – Sigurðsson tended to be the furthest player forward for the Blues last season. Calvert-Lewin, effectively, plays as a No.10 for Everton, with the striker occupying the midfield space that had Luka Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyaté marauding around in. Therefore, our central midfield pair will potentially have to decide upon which one picks up the England U21 striker. Whichever one of the centre-mid pairing doesn’t take up the role of tracking Calvert-Lewin,

they will have to keep an eye on a potential gap opening up at centre-back. The free-roaming role that Richarlison is offered, coupled with the high positioning of Lucas Digne in support, saw Patrick van Aanholt play slightly narrower than he usually does across the 90 minutes. With Digne’s desire to

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

push forward up the left flank, coupled with the fact the left-sided centre-back – the on-loan Kurt Zouma last season – is the higher of the two CBs, there’s a great opportunity for the wingers to position themselves between the two left-sided defenders of Everton, with plenty of space in behind.

The number of goals Dixie Dean scored in just one season for the Toffeemen, a record still to this day. Even more incredible was the fact that he achieved this at just 21 years of age, rounding it off in style in the last game of the campaign with a hat-trick against Arsenal.

The number of miles the proposed new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock is from Goodison Park. After various attempts over the years to secure land and funding elsewhere in Liverpool to build a new ground, it seems that the latest proposal has some traction. Heads of Terms have been agreed to purchase the waterside site for ÂŁ22.5M. The club will look to raise ÂŁ300M for the project.

10.08.2019

233 The number of Merseyside derbies played to date. With the Toffees clocking up 66 wins, they lag behind their fierce rivals who have 93 victories to their name. In fact, Everton have failed to beat the Reds in the last 19 derbies, a depressing record stretching back to October 2010.

16

Everton have only been out of the First Division for four seasons in their history. The last occasion was in 1953/54.

Wayne Rooney was just 16 when he made his first-team debut against Spurs, getting an assist in a 2-2 draw. His famous howitzer strike against Arsenal just five days before his 17th birthday announced him to the world, and the rest, as they say, is history.

43

04 SOMEONE THEY’D LIKE TO FORGET: Reds legend Ian Rush isn’t the most welcome at Goodison Park, with the former striker scoring 19 goals – and assisting six more – in his 34 games against Everton.

46

HISTORY We haven’t had much luck in Manchester in recent times. More like ‘Theatre of Nightmares’ than ‘Theatre of Dreams’. I still have flashbacks of that controversial Kagisho Dikgacoi sending off and penalty in 2013. We’ve never won at Old Trafford in the Premier League. In fact, we’ve never beaten them in 20 Premier League matches. So, following our fantastic wins at the Etihad and the Emirates last season, this is the final negative statistic that really needs changing as we try and build on the 0-0 draw back in November 2018. Our last league win here was a 2-1 victory on December 9th 1989 with the great Mark Bright scoring both of our goals. Our only other league win was on 10th October 1970 when Bobby Tambling scored the

only goal of the game on what was Sir Bobby Charlton’s 500th league appearance for Manchester United. MEMORABLE MATCHES It’s no surprise that I don’t remember too many happy journeys back from Old Trafford. Of course, the game that stands out for me was that fabulous League Cup victory in November 2011. It was an amazing night at Old Trafford but the highlight was the worldie from substitute Darren Ambrose. As far as I can remember, Darren only ever scored bangers for Palace and that was the greatest goal of a career full of great goals. He smacked it into the top corner from nearly 40 yards out and I recall our little band of CPFC2010 owners going absolutely bonkers in the directors’ box, breaking all the rules of etiquette and polite applause.

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

TRAVEL It’s a 220-mile journey from Selhurst Park to Manchester up the M1 (or M40) and then the M6. You’d be doing well to make it in less than four hours as there’s always a hold-up somewhere along the way. The M6 toll road is usually a good bet for avoiding some of the queues north of Birmingham. The trains to Manchester Piccadilly are pretty good. They take just over two hours from Euston with just a couple of stops at somewhere like Crewe or Stoke. You can fly from Heathrow to Manchester but the hassle of getting to and from the airports doesn’t make it any quicker than the train. The stadium is four miles from the station – so too far to walk. Taxis are pretty cheap or there are trams and buses.

PUBS & BEER Manchester is a great place for drinking beer. There are now an amazing 75 micro-breweries in and around the city. A few of my favourites are Cloudwater, Marble, Blackjack and Phoenix. Cloudwater have their own modern-style craft beer bar in Piccadilly trading estate. Marble own a traditional pub called the Marble Arch Inn which is a bit further away. Blackjack beers can be found at the Smithfield Market Tavern. There is always a great choice of beers at the Port Street Beer House and also at the Piccadilly Tap which is a one-minute walk from where you get off the train.

WHAT ELSE IS MANCHESTER KNOWN FOR? Cotton: Manchester was once the world’s leading textile producer. Rain: someone analysed the weather in Manchester and it rained on 193 days, which is 53% of the year. The Ship Canal, which linked this inland city with the sea. A huge number of very fine bands including Oasis, The Smiths, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, The Stone Roses, The Verve and Simply Red. FAMOUS MANCHESTER UNITED FANS United have millions of supporters all over the world; they are a truly global brand and you’re never more than a few feet away from a Red Devil. They have thousands of celebrity supporters too with some real international superstars like Usain Bolt and Justin Timberlake. Painfully, there are famous United fans who come from south London too, like South Norwood’s Stormzy.

Communitea Café

“Belonging. I found that here in the community around South Norwood, and I wanted to give others that feeling, too.” Reem and her good friend set up the Communitea Café on Norwood High Street 18 months ago, as a trading arm to Yalla Hub, because they wanted to establish a space for them and others in the community to feel a sense of belonging. Communitea Café is a social space that provides south Londoners with a friendly atmosphere where you can work, read a book from their library, talk to the owners and other customers about your day all whilst enjoying their variety of vegetarian food and Ethiopian coffee. It has a relaxing aura to it – whether it’s the vibrant cushions calling you or the fact Reem’s relaxed approach to day-to-day life means that should you

pop out without paying (as we’ve all inadvertently done) Reem knows you’ll be back at some point. Trust is a hard thing to have in a community, but if yours is lucky enough to have it, you are better off for it. In an almost ironic turn of events, from London giving Reem the sense of security of being in a place that she felt she belonged to, the Communitea Café that she and her partner have created almost feels like an escape from the London hustle and bustle for people born and raised here. A borderless four walls down a busy and diverse high street. That’s exactly what it is: an escape; Yalla Hub is an organisation aiming to holistically improve migrant women’s work-life experiences in the UK and to encourage the presence of migrant and BAME women in business.

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

Whether it’s their five-month programmes where migrant women are taught by a network of entrepreneurs about how to start and maintain a sustainable business or attending a patchwork quilt workshop; something special is being built a stone’s throw from Norwood Junction station. The inspiration for Yalla Hub, other than the Arabic translation meaning: ‘Let’s Go!’ stems from Reem and her friends’ own personal stories; their own battles to creating more entrepreneurial opportunities and drive positive social change to social causes close to their hearts. Whether it is a friend of Reem’s, who was a journalist back in Colombia but due to difficulties accessing the journalism field in the UK, could only find work as a cleaner. Or whether it is Reem’s story of facing barriers in

And that’s before you even consider the noise and vibe that match-going Palace fans bring when the Eagles are at Selhurst Park.

51

establishing a career, Yalla Hub was birthed to help alleviate the struggles of migrant women. But this wouldn’t be possible without having the café, which keeps them sustainable and grounds them in the diverse community of South Norwood. The desire to avoid any more cases such as those is what drives Reem and the overarching aims of Yalla Hub and its Communitea Café. And they’re getting there. In just over a year, Communitea Café has gone from an empty unit on the high street to becoming a community hub with a wider team of talented staff and frequent events and workshops that keep the residents engaged in their community. The location of South Norwood couldn’t be more ideal for the aims of Yalla Hub, with the diverse community creating an atmosphere of culture and creativity. And that’s before you even consider the noise and vibe that match-going Palace fans bring when the Eagles are at Selhurst Park. Reem can’t help but smile when discussing the Palace fans and what they bring when Roy Hodgson’s side are playing at home. However, she does acknowledge that they’d love to see more Eagles frequenting the Communitea Café on a matchday. So, if you’re looking for a place to flick through the matchday programme or to socialise before kick-off, head down to Communitea Café – and order the popular chickpea pancake; it’s incredible.

The memory is drawn back to those ecstatic scenes near the end of extratime, when Ian Wright nodded Eddie McGoldrick’s cross down and beyond a stranded Terry Gennoe to prompt the first gleeful pitch invasion. Or the moment the crowd spilled on to the turf for a second time on the final whistle, a few minutes later, as Crystal Palace basked in their return to the top-flight after an eight-year absence. Yet it was only over the summer of 1989 that the true implications of that rip-roaring second leg play-off final win over Blackburn Rovers truly became apparent. Palace, under the chairmanship of Ron Noades, had built slowly and shrewdly to transform a club on its knees through the first half of the decade into promotion contenders. But had that goal not been achieved on a giddy afternoon in early June, years of hard work might have been undone. Wright, plucked from non-league Greenwich Borough, had been convinced to sign a new contract the previous September, but the vultures were already circling to lure the striker away. Now, at least, he could experience the First Division

as a Palace player with his suitors frustrated. Then there was the manager Steve Coppell, the former Manchester United winger who had dedicated so much of himself into reshaping an ailing team to reinvent them as a force in the second tier. “I had given myself five years to get the club promoted when I joined,” he later confirmed. “I’d said if I couldn’t get Palace up in that time, then I should probably hand on to someone else.” Elevation ensured manager and team stayed together to tackle life at the higher level, with only a sprinkling of talent added to the ranks in the close season. Mark Dennis, a hard-tackling leftback who had pipped Stuart Pearce to the nickname ‘Psycho’ and had at least spent time in the top division with Birmingham City, Southampton and Queens Park Rangers, made the move from Loftus Road for £50,000. “Not what you’d consider a ‘Crystal Palace signing’, but he had such quality,” said Mark Bright. “He’d pride himself in curling the ball into you at pace, loved to get forward and had a lovely left foot. He was a funny guy, but a really good teammate.”

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

In truth, Dennis would have more influence off the pitch than on it. More eye-catching, however, was the return of Andy Gray from QPR, whom he had only joined from Aston Villa a few months previously. The midfielder had drawn plenty of criticism after agitating to move to Villa two years previously, handing in a written transfer request and leaving the club “faced with an unsettled player who was becoming increasingly difficult to motivate and whose influence among the other players was disruptive.” He returned at 25 to play the best football of his career though, in a team adjusting to life at a higher level, there would first be a bumpy start to endure. In a quirk of the scheduling, Gray’s first game back in Palace colours took him to Loftus Road, where 5,000 away fans bellowed their support as their favourites emerged on to the pitch through a barrage of red and blue balloons. Immediate notice of how difficult the step up might prove was duly delivered as Paul Wright, secured by QPR from Aberdeen that summer, scored twice in a comfortable 2-0 win. Life in the First Division could prove brutal.

53

The 2019/20 season marks 30 years on from the first year ‘back’ in the top-flight under Steve Coppell, and the Guardian’s Dom Fifield looks back at the highs, lows and iconic moments for the Eagles during that campaign.

Max Meyer and Mamadou Sakho joined a group of excited children to play football, dodgeball, golf and archery at a Palace for Life summer holiday club aimed at keeping children healthy during the school holidays. The two first-teamers arrived fresh from their morning training session, surprising youngsters at a school just down the road from Selhurst Park with tickets to Palace’s game against Hertha Berlin. Midfielder Meyer said: “Mama and I had a lot of fun playing football and dodgeball with the children, we were very happy to be there and to see their happy faces. We answered their questions and then gave them some tickets for the game against Hertha. It’s really important for us to meet the children when we can, it’s really good to be here.” Backed by Croydon Council and Family Action, the free holiday club is running four days a week

throughout the summer. There are two venues: Heavers Farm Primary School in South Norwood and at Salvation Army in Thornton Heath, providing vital to help families in the Croydon area. There is a focus on sport and games as well as workshops on healthy eating and mental health, with every child getting a healthy lunch and a snack each day. After getting involved with all of the sports on offer, Meyer and Sakho answered the children’s questions about life as a professional footballer. Health and Wellbeing Manager at Palace for Life Foundation Beth Towle added: “It was such a treat for the children

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

to meet Max and Mamadou and receive their tickets for the game; they were all extremely excited! “Our holiday programme is all about encouraging children to stay active and eat healthily over the school holidays. Most importantly, we want the children to have fun and that’s what this visit was all about; I hope they had a great day.”

INVEST IN WHAT YOU LOVE 56 CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

This week, we sat down with Nikola Tavares at the Copers Cope training ground canteen and discussed leaving South Africa, overcoming injury and his goals.

10.08.2019

58

At 18, it doesn’t take much to feel the carpet pulled from under your feet: mounting schoolwork, complexion issues or parents noticing that missing Silk Cut; There are a host of concerns to preoccupy the adolescent mind. But few teenagers have to experience a threatened career, months of isolation from a lifelong passion or the piercing agony of rupturing their anterior cruciate ligament. Fewer still experience it, come out stronger and refuse to complain that they ever went through it at all. Then again, few teenagers are like Nikola Tavares; Palace’s now-20year-old centre-back, who, just two years ago, tore his ACL; one of the most detrimental injuries a footballer can sustain. “I received a pass which went a bit astray and I went to the line to clear it off with my left,” he recalled. “I’ve done so and as I’ve planted my left foot back down, that’s when my knee has just twisted out. The studs go into the ground and the momentum swayed my body and the knee just went. That’s when I felt it and I knew, I haven’t felt anything like this before. “As I was falling to the ground, out of instinct I just screamed: ‘my knee’ as I was falling. That pain, I needed someone to be there looking at it or compressing it or doing something to it, something to take it away. “I had a scan and then Murray Moore the Under-23s’ physio called

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

10.08.2019

me up and said: ‘I’m afraid it’s bad news, it’s your ACL.’ To be honest, I broke down. I was just gutted.” After a “very tough” few days coming to terms with the sidelining rupture, Tavares would naturally be tempted to focus on months alone in the gym which stretched before him like a prison sentence, but instead turned his efforts to improving himself and his football. “It’s normal to have a week or two where you’re going to be down or you’re going to be just walking around with your head down and not ready to get at it yet but once that stage fades you just have to put it in the past. That’s what I tried to do, just find the positives; which were getting stronger, getting bigger and getting excited to get back.” That resolve stems from a wellstocked store of willpower borne from a childhood exposed to poverty in South Africa whereby a ball and two staggeringly invested parents were unwavering sources of support. Leaving Cape Town when Tavares was just 14, the defender’s parents closed down a prosperous business and moved their two sons to England in the hope of finding a

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

better standard of football for their boys’ careers. “Football has always been my passion,” Tavares said. “I’d go to bed dreaming of it. Eat, sleep, football. It was a no-brainer. Whether my family came with me or not, I would move to wherever football was for me. “My parents, the fact that they gave up so much and sacrificed so much to achieve their goal of making me happy - I look up to them.” At the close of last season, Tavares’ goal had been partly achieved when the 20-year-old, just months after recovering from his ruptured ACL, made the first team bench against AFC Bournemouth. The emotion for Tavares and his family – who had relinquished and risked so much for football – must have been overwhelming upon his return from Selhurst that afternoon. Mimicking his father, Tavares smiled as he threw up his arms, saying: “‘Oh, my boy, my boy!’ He was just proud. He tells me to do it again next year and not to stop there.” 8,500 miles from home and months of recovery from the sidelines, Nikola Tavares is just one step from realising his dream once and for all.

59

“IT WAS A NO-BRAINER. WHETHER MY FAMILY CAME WITH ME OR NOT, I WOULD MOVE TO WHEREVER FOOTBALL WAS FOR ME.”

PALACEXI IN TIME

BUILDING SITE The close season of 1969 was a busy one construction wise at Selhurst Park. Not only was the Arthur Wait stand still awaiting full completion but also the rebuilding of the Whitehorse Lane terraces and provision of a supporters’ hall in the car park were underway. In the week leading up to this game, the club put out a plea for fans to come and help the clearing up and quite a few obliged. In fact, as someone who volunteered, we were greeted by a short-sleeved dusty chairman in Wait himself and put to work. Some of us were still there at midday on the Saturday as fans were beginning to arrive for kick-off! FIRST GOAL It took only 12 minutes for Palace to score their inaugural goal in Division One and it came thanks to an error by United goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer. A long throw by Roger Hoy into the United penalty area was misjudged by Rimmer for Mel Blyth to send a looping header goalwards, where Roger Hynd was

tussling with a United defender and trying to get a final touch. The goal was originally credited to new boy Hynd, however, it was later awarded to Blyth after the Scotsman Hynd had appeared on television as the club’s first top flight scorer. SAY IT WITH FLOWERS In an interview with a football magazine, United captain Bobby Charlton praised Palace, as when he walked into the dressing room there was a bunch of flowers for his wife Norma. Charlton was impressed by what he found, going on to say: “This was my first visit to the ground and it was impressive. A club that can show the human interest they did and the work to making their ground so nice deserves to get on.” THE 90 MINUTES United could have scored after eight minutes but Hynd was on hand to clear off the line. It was Palace who opened the scoring but it only lasted 10 minutes when

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

Bobby Charlton was quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area. Five minutes before the break another error in the United defence allowed debutant Gerry Queen to collect a pass from Steve Kember who, with defender David Sadler slipping, steered the ball home past Rimmer. As expected the Red Devils came back 10 minutes into the second half when Willie Morgan was teed up in the penalty area by Denis Law for the equaliser in front of the 48,610 crowd. FINAL WHISTLE The Match Of The Day cameras were present and an indisposed David Coleman meant that Barry Davies made his MOTD commentary debut. Bernard Joy of the Evening Standard wrote “How these Palace players worked! Every time a gap was created by the genius of Best or Charlton, someone – a defender or recognised forward - hurried back to fill in.” Manager Bert Head added: “We have laid down a series of targets. First, to gain 35 points.”

RICHARD SHAW

We had a trip to Belgium which was four sessions a day. Starting our days at 7am, we’d train through the morning and in the afternoon before doing gym work so it was quite full on. Back in England, we came back and played against Ramsgate, Corinthian Casuals, Bromley and Dulwich Hamlet. The Corinthian and Dulwich games in particular were very pleasing because of the manner in which we played, especially at Dulwich in the second half - it was probably the best we played in pre-season. For anyone who watched, I hope you could see the boys carrying out our half-time instructions with great effect. It’s nice to win games because it breeds confidence but my focus will always be the same: it’s about the individual development of players at this level. So I’m very proud that this summer has seen seven or eight Under-23

players join the first team squad. It’s absolutely brilliant and I was delighted with the fact that the lads experienced touring with the first team and that they were involved in games with crowds. The consequence of sending boys up to the next level is that we’ve had an opportunity to look at the younger lads and pre-season has been a good exercise in terms of young ones coming up from the Under-18s. I’m sure the lads have enjoyed playing against men’s teams and benefitted from the experience. Of course, 17-year-old Brandon Pierrick deserves a special mention for his brace against AFC Wimbledon. He is an exciting talent and earned those goals. The players with the first team are ready to go and start forging careers and the new boys coming through have got to understand that this is an opportunity for them.

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

They have to learn quite quickly they’re in an adult environment at this level - but they’ve been good and have equipped themselves really well this season. Finally, I must end with a note on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who I coached from the age of 16. We are very proud that our patience, hard work and focus on his development rather than earning points has seen him become the player he is today. From what I’ve heard, he’s settling in really well at Manchester United and taking everything in his stride as I predicted he would. I don’t think a week goes by where Dave Reddington and I don’t talk about him and I’m so, so pleased that he’s doing well. Aaron’s is a story that inspires our talented Development squad and I look forward to seeing how they progress this season.

71

As with every season, summer this year has been about the boys getting minutes and getting back into the swing of things by playing games and returning to full fitness.

DEAN DAVENPORT

We finished at the end of last season and knew things had to be looked at in terms of adjustments to the team but also to our setup as a club. Therefore, pre-season has been a tough one to say the least. We’ve now had the correct amount of time to prepare for a season in the Championship, bringing in players, looking at potential additions and the changing of the club structure from top to bottom because we didn’t get that opportunity last campaign. It has been a massive learning curve for the club and myself this summer. With our heightened profile, we are now dealing with agents and all the extra requirements that come from that side of the game. Furthermore, we’ve made a massive move and we’ve put in two Development sides. There’s no one over the age of 18 in those – all

players are aged between 16-18. This will provide a pathway to our first team, and we have already signed one of the players on first team forms, with a couple more set to be offered contracts, too. For me, it’s great to be offering that route for up and coming talents, and it’s also great for outsiders to see the setup we offer. One of the harder aspects of this summer has been the releasing of players; we have had to release, at the time of writing this column, nine players – players who have made valuable contributions to the side over the years. Last season, it was fantastic to be in the league and it was good to compete but we knew this campaign required us to get some more experience in. And now we do look a far more composed, energetic and experienced side; the players we’ve brought in are players that

CRYSTAL PALACE v EVERTON

have that Palace DNA. The team returned on July 26th, which is relatively early compared to other sides in the league, but it has given us extra time to settle the new additions in and for them to start to gel with their teammates. This season we have to move on; we have to be professional, we have to be competitive, win more games and make strides up that league table. If we could finish in the top five that would be a massive achievement and one I fully believe this squad can achieve. Our season begins against Coventry United a week tomorrow. We’ve played them before, so know they will be well-organised team and will look to hit us on the break. However, we are experienced and I’m confident we have more than enough in our squad to kick-off the new season with a positive result.

73

This week, Palace Women’s manager, Dean Davenport, discusses a summer of structural changes, plenty of new additions and looks ahead to the season opener against Coventry United.
