LAST WEEKEND WE NETTED THREE GOALS AWAY FROM HOME WHICH SHOWS WE CAN CAUSE PLENTY OF PROBLEMS FOR OPPOSITION DEFENCES

THE MANAGER 05

I believe we have enough quality Welcome to Selhurst Park today for our second FA Cup game of the month as we host Tottenham Hotspur in one of the ties of the fourth round.

Our previous game in the cup against Grimsby Town was one in which we had to remain patient to break down a spirited team. Even against 10 men it was a tough day at the office. However, we got the job done and were rewarded with another home tie against a club who have plenty of history in this competition. As has happened so many times this season, we pushed one of the Premier League’s elite all the way when Spurs last visited here in November but they got the all-important goal and once again clinched a narrow victory against us. But as any football fan knows, FA Cup ties can spring all sorts of results and we’re hopeful that we can claim a spot in the fifth round draw with a good display today. Last weekend saw us succumb to the odd goal in seven against Liverpool, but there were plenty of positives to be taken from our performance at Anfield. Just as we did against fellow title contenders Manchester City, we netted three goals away from home which shows we can cause plenty of problems for opposition defences and that we are being more clinical in front of goal, which should stand us in good stead in the coming months. Liverpool’s record at home, coupled with the best defence in the league, made the trip to Merseyside a daunting prospect so I was proud of the players’ efforts to get back to 2-2 having seen the lead slip away. Had we had the rub of the green and a couple of their shots deflected differently, then we might have had another

PALACE

v

TOTTENHAM

impressive victory to put alongside the Manchester City one last month. We completed our first signing of the transfer window this week and I am pleased to welcome Lucas Perri, a young Brazilian goalkeeper, to the club who we’re hopeful can be an asset in the years to come. In regards to players that can make an instant impact, we’ll keep trying to bring in a couple of new faces that can help us in the remainder of the campaign. Things can change very quickly in the final week of the window so we’re as prepared as we can be should anything crop up that interests us and would benefit the squad. But whatever happens between now and the end of the month, I believe we have enough quality to survive in this division once again so we won’t panic and only bring in players that can make a difference. I was impressed by the turnout for the Grimsby game, and despite their huge backing our supporters managed to make plenty of noise themselves and supported the players right until the end. That positivity certainly played its part in helping us grind out the late win, so please do the same again today and hopefully we can reward you by extending our cup run. Enjoy the game!

WE DON’T GIVE UP AFTER CONCEDING GOALS, AND THAT IS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THIS SQUAD. WE PLAY UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE

THE CAPTAIN 07

We’ll never stop fighting to win Last weekend’s game against Liverpool was very nice for everyone to watch, except for ourselves because we didn’t get any points for an excellent performance.

It was very disappointing because we scored three goals against one of the best teams in the league but they had a few more chances and scored after deflections, a mistake and a handball, so we at least deserved a point. We can still take a lot of positives from the game; we played well, our shape was very good and when we had the ball we were so dangerous. We have to just carry on believing in what we do and continue to perform like that. We are an experienced team and we don’t give up after conceding goals, and that is the main character of this squad. We play until the last minute, and for me that showed at 4-2. 99% of the teams who play Liverpool would have just waited to finish the game at that point, but we tried to score the third and got it, and then went for the fourth. We will never stop fighting to try and win. It was a different type of game to Manchester City last month because Liverpool played with more players in the middle but City had a lot of players out on the flanks, and in both situations we played so well. Against City we won, and if Liverpool didn’t have all the luck we would have taken some points as well, but that’s football. That gives us confidence playing another top team in Tottenham Hotspur today. They are without some of their best players which possibly also helps us too but they have a lot of other quality players, so it’ll be a hard game. However, the FA Cup is something we

PALACE

v

TOTTENHAM

are looking to do well in this season and we’ll give everything to move forward in it. The cup in England is totally different than in Greece, Belgium or Serbia. I played for big clubs in other countries who won the cups, but it’s different because it’s not as hard to beat the smaller clubs plus there are groups, so even if you lose one game you still have a chance to go through. Here, if you lose you are out and that’s why it’s much harder to win the FA Cup. There are always shocks in this competition because all the teams are physically very good, and if a Premier League team doesn’t have their day, their opponents can take their chance. Anything can happen. If you want to reach the semi-finals, you have to beat one of the big teams along the way. If we beat Tottenham then they’ll be out as well as Liverpool and one of Arsenal or Manchester United. If we can get a bit of fortune to not draw one of the other big teams such as Chelsea or Manchester City then you can very soon be in the last four, but before we get carried away we have to win today. Make some noise!

IT WOULD BE BRILLIANT TO CONTINUE THIS FA CUP RUN, ESPECIALLY AFTER WE MADE GOOD PROGRESS IN THE LEAGUE CUP ONLY TO FALL IN THE LAST-16

THE CHAIRMAN 09

Yet again, we proved our ability Welcome to the supporters, players and staff of Tottenham Hotspur to Selhurst Park for this mouth-watering FA Cup tie, and greetings to all Palace fans as always. In the last round we enjoyed a proper cup tie against Grimsby Town who performed extremely well to keep us at bay for most of the game. We were looking at train times for Grimsby when Jordan popped up with his second in as many games, leading us to what I hope will be a magnificent cup occasion against one of the country’s best teams. It would be brilliant to continue this FA Cup run, especially after we made good progress in the League Cup only to fall in the last-16. Last week’s performance at Liverpool had everything, less the point that it deserved. Yet again, we proved our ability to go toe-to-toe with the best teams by playing some magnificent football. There is no question luck played a large part in their victory thanks to two deflected goals and a handball, and I’m beginning to look forward to VAR arriving although I do still have great concerns about its overall effect. In spite of this, we must be proud of Roy and the players. These performances will start generating points, of that I’m sure. Since our last home game against Watford, we’ve sent two players on loan as they seek first-team football to accelerate their development; Nya Kirby to Blackpool and Joseph Hungbo to Margate. We have high hopes for both, and I hope these temporary moves benefit all parties. We have also said goodbye to Sullay Kaikai who had been with us since he was 15-years-old, and everyone here wishes him well as he heads to Holland for a new challenge. Joining Palace is young Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas

PALACE

v

TOTTENHAM

Perri. We’re really excited to have him join us, in what is an exceptionally strong goalkeeping setup. Welcome to Palace, Lucas! Speaking of goalies, Julian made his 404th appearance for the club at Anfield and as Roy said after the game, you’d be hard pushed to find a better club servant anywhere in world football. We are blessed to have him, and should he be called upon again I know he will put that mistake behind him and continue to be the model professional that he is. He will go down as one of our club’s best ever players. Off the pitch, you may have seen news coverage of us opening one of our lounges to homeless people recently as temperatures plummeted. I would like to thank all the staff that put in the extra effort to make this happen, as well of course Croydon Council and charities like Crisis that are working hard to address the issue. Homelessness is a complex problem and we understand this only scratches the surface. Around 1,000 people slept rough in our area over the last year, so we will do everything we can to play our part in helping those in desperate need, especially when temperatures become a danger to life. Enjoy the match tonight, and as always – get right behind Roy and his team. Up the Palace!

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur / Sunday 27th January // Selhurst Park

Today's game Having both seen off League Two opposition in differing fashions earlier this month, Palace and Tottenham meet in one of the ties of the FA Cup fourth round. The Eagles needed a late Jordan Ayew goal to edge past plucky Grimsby Town on home turf three weeks ago, while Spurs ran riot at Tranmere Rovers to thrash the Wirral-based outfit 7-0 with Fernando Llorente helping himself to a hat-trick. Spurs have won each of the last five games against Palace by a 1-0 scoreline - the last of which came 79 days ago when a Juan Foyth goal clinched a fourth-straight win at Selhurst Park for Mauricio Pochettino - but the last time that sequence was broken saw the Eagles beat Spurs on their way to the 2016 FA Cup final. In fact, three of Palace’s nine victories over Tottenham in their history have come in this competition. One odd stat between today’s opponents is that 26 of the last 27 goals scored in Premier League games between Palace and Spurs were netted in the second half, with just one first half goal scored in the last 15 meetings. However, recent cup clashes have bucked that trend with Martin Kelly’s strike three years ago coming on the stroke of half-time, while Freddie Kanoute netted two of his hat-trick goals before the interval in a 3-0 Spurs win back in January 2004. If needed, a replay will be played at Wembley on Wednesday 6th February with an 8pm kick-off.

Martin Kelly is the only current Eagle to have scored for the club against Tottenham Hotspur, coming in the fifth round win three years ago.

SELHURST’S BIGGEST CUP SHOCK Wintry conditions, a boggy pitch, unglamorous surroundings and a big crowd are all the ingredients needed for an FA Cup shock, and 95 years ago they helped clinch Palace’s greatest ever on home turf at Tottenham Hotspur’s expense. Here we take a look back at that day at The Nest in 1924.

16 SELHURST’S BIGGEST CUP SHOCK

‘The magic of the cup’ might be a tired cliché, but it still rings true whenever an underdog has its day and humbles one of the big boys – something that Palace have been doing for well over a century. While their 1907 defeat of cup kings Newcastle United on Tyneside is still remembered, the upset of Leeds United at Elland Road in 1976 retold and the Villa Park thriller against Liverpool in 1990 replayed, perhaps their greatest giantkilling on home turf has been lost to history, which occurred 95 years ago against today’s opposition Tottenham Hotspur. Back then, Palace were in just their third-ever season in the Second Division when it actually was the second tier of the English game. They were a club in their teens; only established 18 years previously and were experiencing growing pains of their own as they attempted to move into their new Selhurst Park home but an industrial dispute was delaying matters.

The ground the Glaziers were leaving behind was The Nest, located on the site of the present day train depot outside Selhurst station. It consisted of a grandstand on one side and mounds of earth to stand upon on the others, and just a single entrance or exit. Upon promotion to the Second Division, many of Palace’s new opponents objected to the poor facilities. It was unknown what Tottenham’s top brass made of the surroundings when the FA Cup first round draw sent them to the Glaziers’ tight, cramped headquarters on 12th January 1924, but the top-flight outfit travelled across the capital packed with pedigree having won the competition twice before, including two years previously, and labelled “London’s favourite team for cup honours.” It had been 13 years since they had been eliminated at the first hurdle, but even so the majority of the 17,000 spectators squeezed into the venue hoping

A. HARRY

to see that run end. Manager Edmund Goodman named Billy Morgan as captain, described in the press at the time as: “so punctual, precise and prosperous in all he undertakes... he betrays the Birmingham accent in speech and soccer.” Straight from the start, Palace refused Spurs any time to settle, with the hosts’ Bobby Greener doing an excellent job of subduing the threat of the Lilywhites’ 5’2” winger Fanny Walden, while snowy conditions in the days leading up to the game meant the pitch soon churned up and proved to be a leveller. The breakthrough came just after half an hour when Robert McCracken won the ball and slipped a pass to Albert Harry, in the midst of a fine performance. The little winger beat Spurs skipper and England international Arthur Grimsdell and cut inside before delivering a low cross, and Morgan dived between the flying studs to guide a perfect header into the net.

PALACE

v

TOTTENHAM

10 minutes after half-time the Glaziers found themselves in dreamland when they doubled their lead after shots from Tom Hoddinott and Bill Hand were repelled, but Morgan was on hand to score from close range despite a heap of players in his way. Spurs fought back and Alex Lindsay thumped a shot off an upright and Jack Little cleared off the Palace line, but their hopes were all but over when Grimsdell picked up an injury, leaving Morgan as the hero of the hour and dubbed “The Spurs’ Chief Undertaker.” He would do little more in his Palace career, and in fact his goal against Leicester City a week after the Tottenham win would be his final one for the club despite playing on until the end of the 1924/25 season. Little did he know when he trudged off a boggy field in SE25 that his brace against Spurs would still be referred to nearly a century later, having secured the biggest cup shock seen on Palace’s own patch.

EIGHT-TIME FA CUP WINNERS

The manager Pochettino spent an 18-year playing career in his homeland, Spain and France and won 20 caps for Argentina before moving into management with Espanyol, where he had played for 10 seasons. He helped to keep them in La Liga before moving onto Southampton in January 2013, and he spent 18 months at St Mary’s before being poached by Spurs. He has since led them into the UEFA Champions League three times, and last season to a runners-up finish in the league - their best result in 54 years which earned him a new five-year deal.

Club legend A back-to-back FA Cup winner with Spurs in 1981 and 1982 - the latter seeing him net in both the final and subsequent replay against Queens Park Rangers - the mercurial midfielder made his breakthrough at the club in 1975/76 and would spend 12 seasons at White Hart Lane, also helping them win the UEFA Cup in 1984. The gifted playmaker scored 110 goals in 490 first-team matches before departing to Monaco in 1987, and only four other players in Tottenham’s history have played more games for the club.

More Things you didn't know... ABOUT TOTTENHAM

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. For the second time this season, he looks back at all things Tottenham.

When Spurs took to the field for the 1987 FA Cup final with Sheffield Wednesday, six of the outfield players were missing club sponsors Holsten from the front of their shirts. Fresh kits for the final had been ordered alongside some unbranded versions for a youth team tournament in Germany, and a mix-up when sending the cup final shirts for embroidery meant that Spurs lined up at Wembley with mismatched jerseys.

VAR may have aided Tottenham in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final against Chelsea, but 117 years ago they suffered due to the lack of it. The 1901 FA Cup final against Sheffield United at the Crystal Palace was one of the first games to be filmed, and it was clear from celluloid evidence that one of the Blades’ goals in the 2-2 draw did not cross the line. Justice prevailed in the replay with Spurs winning 3-1.

Architect Archibald Leitch was heavily involved in the full-scale redevelopment of White Hart Lane in 1909. The Scotsman received his first football stadium commission in 1899 when he was asked to build Ibrox Park, home of the team he supported, Rangers. He subsequently went on to work at a whole host of football grounds across the country, including of course designing the Main Stand at Selhurst Park.

CHRIS WATERS 29

Spurs’ famous cockerel emblem has been used since the 1921 FA Cup final when the Lilywhites became the first Second Division club to lift the trophy when they beat Wolves 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. It was used as the club badge as Harry Hotspur, after whom the club was named, was said to be fond of fighting cocks fitted with spurs. Prior to this, the shirts had a simpler badge consisting of just a capital H.

The club’s record defeat came in 1995 when they were demolished 8-0 by Cologne in the Intertoto Cup. UEFA had threatened English clubs with a ban from all European football earlier that year as all teams eligible for this competition had turned down participation in it. Therefore, Tottenham had to play four games in the summer and fielded teams comprising of reserve players and loanees signed exclusively for the tournament, including Alan Pardew.

Mauricio Pochettino was the second Argentinian manager in English football, following Spurs legend Ossie Ardiles. After a stellar career at White Hart Lane, Ossie became manager at Swindon Town, Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion and then at Spurs in 1993 where his managerial stint was unfortunately not as successful as his playing one, leading the club to a lowly 15th-place finish before being sacked in October 1994.

The current stadium delays Spurs are suffering are nothing new. During White Hart Lane’s redevelopment in the summer of 1988, chairman Irving Scholar assured supporters that the ground would be ready for the match that would see the debut of Paul Gascoigne. On the morning of the game it was clear it could not go ahead, and it was postponed at 9am. Spurs incurred the wrath of the authorities with a two-point deduction, later altered to a £15,000 fine on appeal.

100 YEARS OF THE CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

PART XIII 1984-1988

36 PROGRAMME HISTORY

1984/85

1985/86

Dimensionally the programme remained the same from hereon for many seasons but continued to be produced by an outside agency. The cost remained at 50p but there was a fourpage reduction to 24, but fortunately it was the generic football section that had been jettisoned. For the first six programmes there was a bright cover with the club colours as a sash from right to left and an action picture superimposed over it, then for some reason the design was changed to one with a more drab effect. The inside pages were mostly printed in black and white with the odd splash of colour, with the centre displaying a pull-out poster. The programme opened with new manager Steve Coppell’s ‘Comment’ and the remaining content was basically the same as the previous season, albeit with different titles. One new item was a page for the ‘Palace Club’, an initiative to encourage younger supporters, and acknowledgment to our 60 years at Selhurst Park was provided by Rev. Nigel Sands while the ever-increasing marketing and commercial activities occupied two pages. Stats were found towards the rear pages and the back cover had the line-ups.

There was a total change in the production of the programme as it was brought ‘in-house’ as the club chaplain and historian Nigel Sands was appointed editor under marketing manager Pete King and a youthful Terry Byfield. The cover had only two different photos throughout the season and a club emblem with ‘80’ was added. Size and content basically remained the same but there was certainly the feel that the club was now in control editorially and at least there was a contact telephone number given. After Coppell’s opening thoughts, ‘Selhurst Scene’ contained recent news and ‘Palace Club’ followed. The two pages allocated to the visitors were preceded by a ‘Past Encounter’ and the centre pages ‘Palace in the Picture’ was provided by Neil Everitt. ‘Palace Parade’ portrayed a player or manager and one page was devoted to the reserves and youth while a section was entitled ‘Palace off the Park’. Occasionally another historic article or a football aspect connected with the club would appear, and again a page of fixtures and results completed the inside with the day’s proposed team lineups found as usual on the back cover.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 37

1986/87

1987/88

With one season under his belt, the editor saw no reason to change much but invited Ian Weller to produce a previous programme critique to go with the ‘Past Encounter’ page, and yours truly began his contributions with a small piece on players who had appeared for both Palace and the visitors. The cover changed to mirror the Eagles’ kit and it continued to be printed by The Maybank Press but there was an increase to 60p. In the edition illustrated for the home game against Blackburn Rovers in February, details of the new play-off system to be used at the end of the season were included, while there had been growing disquiet amongst supporters concerning rumours of a merger with Wimbledon, and so chairman Ron Noades invited their participation in deciding the outcome by including a questionnaire in this programme to be completed and returned to the club. From an attendance of just under 6,000, about 40% were sent in resulting in a 9-1 outcome against the merger, also helped by a sit-down demonstration in the Arthur Wait Stand enclosure after the game.

Red and blue stripes returned to the playing kit and this was reflected in the cover design that displayed a different photograph for each issue but the use of black ink made it difficult to decipher the date or opponents. An increase to 28 pages led to a subsequent price hike to 80p. Apart from the regular items, the visitors section was enlarged to three pages with more information on the opposition, ‘Stats and Facts’ became a double-page spread, director Geoff Geraghty gave ‘The Direct View’ in both senses of the word while Adam Sells penned a small piece entitled ‘Two-Fax’ on Second Division matters. This season marked the centenary of the Football League and Nigel Sands highlighted a different Palace campaign in each programme and ‘Fans In Focus’ offered the opportunity for two circled supporters at a recent home game to claim two complimentary tickets each. The more youthful fans were looked after in ‘Junior Eagles’ where assistant manager Ian Evans provided coaching advice in ‘Taff’s Junior Tips’. Away travel details also made a welcome return after a few years as the programme continued its progress back to the standards of a decade earlier.
