ROY HODGSON

We approach today’s game with the confidence gained from the 2-2 draw at the Emirates last weekend but in the knowledge that we face an equally difficult task today if we are to keep up our recent good record against Leicester City. They have invested wisely in some exciting new players and have succeeded, at the same time, with bringing young players like Ben Chilwell, Harvey Barnes & Hamza Choudhury up from the Academy and into the first-team with great effect. This said, the scenario is set for another challenging and fascinating Premier League game again here today as we have no wish, by any means, to play down our chances of winning. To briefly return to our last outing and the draw with Arsenal in north London, I was delighted with the team’s response to

conceding those two early goals and the spirit and determination the players showed in forcing our way back in to the game to secure another crucial point. In this highly competitive league those qualities can never be underestimated or taken for granted. As this is our final home match before Remembrance Sunday, we’ll be commemorating the contribution of British and Commonwealth servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts as they served their country. We are once again joined by members of the services to lead the teams onto the pitch and, following the laying of wreaths, we will hear The Last Post played. We will then observe a one-minute silence to remember the sacrifices of those who risked their lives for the collective cause. Their service is a tribute to the

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

country and I am glad that football makes the effort to remember those who have lost their lives in duty. Finally, last week saw the club agree contract extensions with Sam Woods and Luke Dreher. Sam and Luke have spent much of their time with the first-team when possible and have equipped themselves with maturity and confidence. Luke has been unfortunate with injury complications in recent seasons but has an abundance of talent. He can only continue to work hard to ensure it is utilised. Returning to today’s game, I hope that you enjoy an afternoon of well contested football between two in-form teams. I also hope it ends with Crystal Palace claiming all three points of course and that your support will have been well rewarded come full-time. Enjoy the game!

05

As ever, I would like to welcome today’s opposition, Leicester City; Brendan Rodgers, his staff and players and every Crystal Palace supporter here today.

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC

Looking back at the Manchester City game, I must start with coming out to the display from the fans for Joel before kick-off. It is an amazing achievement to make 200 league appearances for this club. It is not easy to play that many games for any team, you have to be very fit, you have to have quality. All I can say is well done to Wardy and keep doing what you do. City are the best team in the country. But we had our chances, and although we maybe didn’t start how we wanted, we grew into the game in the last 25 minutes and we had our chances. Their first and second goals in a short period did the damage though. Wayne came in for City and Arsenal, and proved my belief that at this level of football you need to have two very good goalkeepers because you never know what might happen with injuries.

Playing for his national team and training hard always, Wayne made sure he was ready for when his chance came and he took it. It’s tough facing City and then heading to another side from last season’s top six in Arsenal, and it’s even tougher when you find yourself two goals down after nine minutes, at their home where they’re very strong normally. The reaction of the whole team at 2-0 down was great. We tried, we didn’t give up, we looked to create and in the end both teams could’ve won the game, so we can be happy with a point. I must discuss Matteo Guendouzi’s challenge on Wilf at the end. Of course, I know it is hard for us to see that challenge because it was against us in a big moment but I must say it was a good tactical foul from him. You have to do that in football

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

sometimes, and if I’m in the same situation, I would do it for the team; you have to sacrifice the card because Wilfried would go oneon-one with their goalkeeper and maybe we win. Leicester City are in good form at the moment but our recent games against them have been some of our best, with many goals. However, this season they’re a little bit different from previous seasons. Youri Tielemans is a player I know from my time at Anderlecht, he was very young at just 16 when he came into the first team. It’s nice to see him playing in the best league in the world and performing well. I’m confident that Selhurst will be a place they will not enjoy today. We will be doing everything to win. Make some noise!

07

I’m not the kind of person who likes to do a lot of videos, but my ‘Luka v Luka’ penalty video was one that interested me and I knew it meant a lot to the media team to make it. I hope you agree it was a funny video.

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

03.11.2019

STEVE PARISH

Today we rightly commemorate our armed forces, on our closest home fixture to Remembrance Sunday. We will hold a minute’s silence before the game starts, and players will be wearing poppies on their shirts which will be auctioned for the Royal British Legion. I must reflect on a fantastic performance and result, and the magnificent away support at the Emirates last Sunday. To comeback from two goals down like the players did just shows how strong the group is. I won’t dwell on VAR’s involvement in the game, suffice to say that I think we were thoroughly deserving of the draw. It’s been an incredibly busy week as we unveiled exciting plans for our main Academy site in Beckenham, as we seek to enhance the site in order to achieve Category 1 status. The scale of our Academy operation is probably a mystery to most supporters. We have 220

young players in our care, with ten teams from Under-9s to Under-23s. Our excellent coaching staff, several of whom have represented Palace, are devoted not only to developing world-class footballers, but exceptional people too. We have been investing in the Academy since 2010, at that point it had no home at all sharing two pitches with the first team. The move across the road to the old RBS NatWest sports ground improved things but it was still shared with a Goals Soccer Centre and a commercial gym space. Because of some of the environmental challenges we face there like flooding, we have relied heavily on nearby facilities to meet increasing demand for pitches and space for the boys’ education, including an indoor pitch at the National Sports Centre. Having now secured the whole site we were delighted this week to

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

share our expansion plans including great enhancement of the player care, education and football facilities. Nine pitches will be developed in varying sizes for each age group. One will be the ‘show’ pitch with undersoil heating, another is 3G and floodlit, as well as a new covered pitch. New classrooms, lecture rooms and meeting spaces will be made, and up to eight tutors will be employed to ensure players receive the very best education on site. Securing Category 1 is imperative for us to be competitive in attracting the very best young players – we will be the only elite academy in south London, and there is an abundance of raw footballing talent right on our doorstep. We are hopeful that local residents and Bromley Council will be supportive of the plans. If permission is granted, we intend to begin works in the new year. Exciting times ahead! Up the Palace!

09

Welcome to everyone associated with Leicester City to Selhurst Park today – supporters, players, staff and directors alike. I can only imagine how proud Vichai would be of the club today - they have been totally united and strong since his tragic passing just over a year ago. Welcome to each and every Palace fan here to support Roy’s team for what promises to be a fantastic match between two in-form teams.

After half a year sidelined by injury, James Tomkins is back in the Crystal Palace lineup. Here, he talks with Ben Mountain about recovering, boring his son and the strength of Palace’s backline.

12 CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

Crystal Palace were seconds away from taking the lead against Leicester City and minutes away from Mamadou Sakho being sidelined for the following eight months when the Frenchman roamed forward from his usually solid stance by fellow centre-back James Tomkins. Hitting the turf a while after, Sakho’s injury would tear apart his partnership with Tomkins like the tendon in the latter’s groin less than seven weeks later. Sakho and Tomkins were fast gaining attention as an indomitable duo at the heart of Palace’s defence, but were reduced to an injury table partnership when Tomkins emulated Sakho’s forward rush against Newcastle United under the glaring lights of St James’ Park. Picking up the ball just past the Magpie’s halfway line, Tomkins immediately felt something at the top of his leg and pulled up; throwing an arm into the air to beckon a physio obstructed by the ongoing match. “I remember just feeling something I’ve never felt really,” Tomkins reflects, the first half of last season’s steadfast defensive unit to have returned. “I felt a pinging feeling and straight away I knew I’d done something. I hit the floor asking for the physios to come on because I knew I was in a bit of a state.

“It was a busy week. We had a game on the Saturday and then we had a tough game mid week against Spurs in the first match at their new stadium. That was on the Wednesday night and it was a tough game, a physical game, and obviously leading into that Newcastle fixture we were very fatigued.

“ THE FIRST QUESTION YOU ASK IS: ‘HOW LONG AM I GOING TO BE OUT FOR? WHEN AM I BACK?’ I DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO TREAT IT, IT WAS COMPLETELY NEW TO ME AND I WAS OUT FOR SIX MONTHS ” “We went through the game’s first-half and we looked comfortable. Then in the secondhalf I think the tempo changed a little bit. Both teams were still wanting points to stay away from the bottom, still fighting for that mid-table spot. Basically, I

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

stepped forward with the ball, overstretched and that was that. “I had a scan. I had bruising come up quite soon, a few hours after and I knew it was going to be the end of my season unless something drastic happened or there was a miracle.” Tomkins had pulled his thigh bone from his adductor tendon and faced the first serious muscle injury of his career. Ahead of him stretched an indeterminate period of resting, rehabilitation and recovery. “The first question you ask is: ‘How long am I going to be out for? When am I back?’... I didn’t know how to treat it, it was completely new to me and I was out for six months which is big in terms of timeframes in football. “The week after, you’re not trying to get fit for anything when you know your season is finished. There’s plenty of time for that later. The first week is taking the swelling down, getting comfortable, standing on crutches, taking the pain away and keeping weight off it. “You go in to your operation as soon as you can so when that happens, you’ve got to rest again and you can’t do anything. Then it’s all about mobility, trying to get movement back: ice, rest, small movements. My wound took a little while to heal so that took a lot of time. I couldn’t do much for a little while.

13

03.11.2019

03.11.2019

14 CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

“When I went away on a summer break, you have to nurse it a little bit. You’ve got to take your wound out when you’re out of the pool, clean it, be your own nurse. I was doing that a lot on holiday. The first week away I was doing my missus’ head in! Driving her crazy ‘What are you doing?!’ “Obviously I’ve got my boy, I was spending time with my boy and he keeps me going. He’s starting nursery soon but he’s a great distraction. He’s growing up fast, kids grow up so quick. He was perfect for me really, it’s what I needed to take my mind off it. My boy was wondering why daddy’s sitting on the couch so much: ‘Daddy’s turned a bit boring.’” Against Manchester City in his first competitive start since April, Tomkins triumphantly took to the turf “buzzing for the game,” marking his return to top-flight football. But the former Team GB defender may not have returned quite so soon had it not been for the injury sustained by Martin Kelly just a day before kick-off. Facing a sudden change of plans, manager Roy Hodgson was forced into a sharp volte-face to adapt his selection before facing the champions of England. “For a manager it must be crazy,” Tomkins says. “It’s not easy. The manager will say it’s a nice problem to have and it is really because I feel he can probably look

on all of us and we’d do a job. It’s a good problem for him. “The manager, Ray [Lewington], Dave [Reddington], Deano [Kiely], obviously have that confidence to put me in against City and it shows what they think and I’m thankful for that. If I could

“ THE MANAGER, RAY, DAVE, DEANO, OBVIOUSLY HAVE THAT CONFIDENCE TO PUT ME IN AGAINST CITY AND IT SHOWS WHAT THEY THINK AND I’M THANKFUL FOR THAT ”

come through a game of that magnitude, I knew I would be in a better place and I managed to do that. I think with games I’ll get fitter and stronger.” Hodgson’s selection headache is compounded by the cluster of rich talent at the heart of his

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

defence, with four centre-backs currently vying for two spaces as Sakho strives to return and young Sam Woods sits in the wings. With Kelly and Scott Dann joining Tomkins and former England captain Gary Cahill, Hodgson has to choose from four centre-backs with over 1,500 competitive games played between them. So how does the manager handle such an expert collection of footballers? “I think in training the manager changes it up. Different partnerships. Sometimes you’re in a three because of the numbers, sometimes you’re in a four. Sometimes he partners us up, sometimes he won’t. He changes it up quite a lot, the manager. When he does his team shape he will then obviously partner the two that are going to play on a Saturday. “Gaz has obviously come here from Chelsea with his experience, started off great and built a great relationship with Kells. Dannsy’s got such a good attitude and his experience has been brilliant for the club. “Mama’s been brilliant since he’s been here and he’s a good player. He’s going to come back from his injury and be fighting for his place. Then there’s obviously me and I’ve played a lot in the last few years. It’s great for the club and we’re looking solid in a lot of games this year.

15

16 CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

“It’s brilliant for competition. It’s what teams need I think, competition for places. We all feed off each other in training, push each other and that can only be good for football. I think it’s great for the team.

“ YOU’VE GOT TO PUT IT IN IN TRAINING AND SHOW WHY YOU SHOULD BE PLAYING. I KNOW IT’S GOOD HERE BECAUSE ALL THE LADS ARE SO GOOD. WE’RE ALL FIGHTING FOR THOSE TWO SPOTS ”

“You’ve got to train better than them, train harder than them, to get into the team and that’s what I had to take as a kid growing up at West Ham. It’s the same here, you’ve got to put it in in training and show why you should be playing. I know it’s good here because all the lads are

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

so good. We’re all fighting for those two spots.” Rewinding 20 years, Tomkins would be fighting for a different spot entirely as he sought to break into football as a striker with West Ham United’s Academy. “I started off as a striker like most kids,” he says. “I played the odd right-wing when I was a bit nippier. At West Ham they could see more of a career with me playing centre-half. It’s unnatural for a striker to try to play centre-half and try to defend. But you kind of get to know the role and as a kid you learn quickly. “It took me a while to get my head around it and enjoy it because I wanted to score goals like any kid. You end up changing and thinking how your career could have panned out. I’ll let the lads judge me on that when they see me playing up top in training sessions!” Up top in training or running out alongside Tomkins against Manchester City and Arsenal, his teammates and Palace fans alike are pleased to see the battling, spirited and experienced performances of the 30-year-old have not been lost in his first serious injury absence. But perhaps the person who is most delighted to see Tomkins back for Palace, at the heart of one of the league’s most solid defences, is the defender’s son: boring daddy no more

EAGLE EYE WITH PALACE TV'S CHRIS GRIERSON

24

There was nobody more delighted with Luka burying that spot-kick against Arsenal than me and my colleagues in the Crystal Palace production team. In fact, I haven’t been that nervous about a penalty since…well…since last week when I nearly broke an 11-yearold’s wrist with my thunderbolt in the Junior Member Day penalty shootout. I was aiming for the corner but that didn’t stop me accepting praise for being brave and going down the middle. The reason for our joy at the Emirates was because of a video we made with Luka recently where he saves his own penalty. You can watch it on Palace TV, but if you have never been on the internet and only obtain entertainment from terrestrial TV and football programmes, I’ll describe it for you.

Luka Milivojevic steps up to take a penalty. Luka Milivojevic is in goal. Luka Milivojevic puts it to Luka Milivojevic’s left. Luka MIlivojevic dives to his left and saves it. Luka Milivojevic is distraught. Luka Milivojevic is happy. Another Luka Milivojevic to the side of the goal is jubilant. An additional Luka Milivojevic on the other side of the goal is downcast.

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

I hope that makes things clear. The idea for the video came from Dom, our videographer. He had seen some YouTubers using cloning to make some cool videos and suggested we do it. I had no idea we had the capability of doing something like that. But he watched some tutorials and then did a trial go with me taking a penalty against myself. Even though

I dived like I was practicing the dance moves to S Club 7’s ‘Reach’, it was okay enough to show Luka and see if he was interested in doing it. Luckily, he was. We only had five minutes to shoot with Luka as it was straight after a training session. You can see how we filmed it on Palace TV. But if you only obtain entertainment from teletext and columns written by untrained football club presenters, you’ll never know. It was then over to Dom to cut out and play around with the footage. He screen recorded the edit and it was 12 hours long. I don’t think he went on YouTube during that time, which is very impressive for a young millennial.

Then the conundrum was when would be the right time to put the video out. After he had scored a penalty…but what if we don’t get another penalty? In the build-up to the Man City game…but he’s missed against them before! At the end of the season… no, I can’t wait that long! Sometimes there’s just never a right time. We’ve actually ended up having videos that have never gone out because we were worried about what mood fans were in and then by the time the mood was better the moment had passed. Luka scared me when he casually said in the canteen “What if this brings bad luck?” Hence why we were so nervous when he stepped up in north London. And so

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

delighted when he put the penalty in the exact spot he put it in our video. Afterwards he said to Dom “their keeper obviously didn’t watch the video!” So, there you go. He scored the first one since we put it out, which means whatever happens in the future has nothing to do with us.

Four of James Maddison’s five goal involvements for Leicester in the PL this season have come in away games (two goals, two assists).

FROM THE DUGOUT

"WHEN YOU'RE SO MANY GOALS UP YOU CAN EASILY SLOW BUT WE KEPT FOCUSSED [V SAINTS]. WE WANT TO BE A TOP TEAM AND TO BE A TOP TEAM YOU MUST BE CLINICAL."

Crystal Palace have enjoyed facing the Foxes in recent seasons, with the Eagles having won their last four meetings with Leicester by an aggregate score of 13-1. In fact, three points today would see Leicester join Wimbledon as the only other side that Palace have won five in a row against in the top-flight. For those of you fond of irrelevant but mildly interesting stats, this will be Palace’s fourth Premier League game in a row against a side starting in the top five of the table – the first side to have done so since Wolves in November 2010. Of course, the Foxes arrive at Selhurst with their last away game in the league seeing Brendan Rodgers’ side record the biggest ever away win in English top-flight history (9-0), and the first away team to score nine in a game since Wolves at Cardiff

City in September 1955. However, the capital is not a place the Foxes tend to travel well to, having won just one of their last 14 Premier League games in London, drawing six times. After winning the penalty against Arsenal, Wilfried Zaha will be hoping he can go one better today and open his goalscoring account for the season. The forward has scored in each of his last three Premier League games against Leicester. Roy Hodgson is yet to lose to Leicester City as a Premier League manager, with six wins from seven games – scoring 20 and conceding just five in the process. However, since Rodgers’ first league match in charge of the club on March 3rd, only Liverpool (18) and Man City (16) have won more top-flight matches than Leicester’s 11.

ORCHESTRATOR: JAMES MADDISON 40

Jamie Vardy may well top the Premier League’s goalscoring charts with nine goals after 10 gameweeks, but it is Maddison who tops several of the statistical tables for Brendan Rodgers’ team. The former Norwich City playmaker is very much a ‘high risk, high reward’ player with his style of play. For example, no one has committed more fouls than the 22-year-old’s 15, however, on the flip side, no one has been fouled more than Maddison’s 22. With three goals in the opening 10 league games, Maddison is on course to better his seven-goal haul from the last

campaign. And it is no surprise that two-thirds of his goals this season have come from long range, with Maddison posting the most shots from outside the box (16 – Youri Tielemans is second on 15), and the attacking midfielder has had 28 shots in total, again a table-topping stat for Leicester City. Leicester’s favoured back four is Ben Chilwell, Çaglar Söyüncü, Jonny Evans and Ricardo Pereira, with Chilwell the only one of the quartet to not play every minute of the Foxes’ Premier League season so far. The foursome top Leicester’s statistics for most passes in their first 10 games: Söyüncü (682), Evans (624), Chilwell (621) and Pereira (612). In fact, no one else has made

IN COMPARISON TO: CRYSTAL PALACE The Foxes have averaged 543 passes per league game so far this season, whereas Palace complete 374. Therefore, Roy Hodgson’s side will be expecting to have less of the ball than they have done in recent games at Selhurst against the likes of Aston Villa, Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Leicester favour crossing as a key form of their attacking play, with the Foxes averaging just over 21 per game (211 in total) – James Maddison has made 70 of those. However, the accuracy of Leicester’s crosses sits at just 17% (Maddison’s is 23%). Palace in comparison average

271

600+ passes, with Tielemans coming closest with 551. The Foxes defence’s heavy involvement in the passing sequences suggests a patient build-up, and coupled with the fact Chilwell and Pereira have made the fourth and fifth most key passes for Leicester, a high defensive line, which is something the Eagles could look to exploit with the pace of the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend in behind.

The number of goals Brendan Rodgers’ side put past Southampton in their last league game to equal the biggest ever Premier League win and break the record for the biggest away victory. BURNLEY F.C.

46

HISTORY Burnley, with its population of 88,000, is the smallest town in the country to have had a Premier League club. Even more remarkable is that they won the old First Division twice and beat Liverpool in the last FA Cup final to be played at Crystal Palace in 1914. We first played them in a 1909 FA Cup tie and, after drawing at home, we went on to lose the replay 9-0! We didn’t play a league game against the Clarets until 60 years later and didn’t win a game at Turf Moor until 2001. MEMORABLE MATCH Of course, facing Burnley immediately conjures up memories of 1979 for fans of my generation - but that match (with our biggest ever home crowd) was at Selhurst

and this is about away games. My fondest memory of playing Burnley away is of a freezing, snowy day in January 2015. With a bitter wind blowing in from the Pennines, we went 2-0 down after 16 minutes. We pulled it back to 2-2 and with three minutes to go, Dwight Gayle scored the winner. I remember a happy walk back to the station in a blizzard. That was our first Premier League win at Turf Moor and our first Premier League win after being two goals down. TRAVEL It’s been a long time since we had a game out of London - and this is one of the longest journeys. If you’re driving, allow five hours. By rail, some people go to Manchester but that involves a change of station as

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

well as a change of train. I prefer a fast train from Euston to Preston, followed by a slow train to Burnley. PUBS AND BEER If someone (else) is driving, a must-visit is the magnificently tiled and unspoilt Edwardian gem called The Victoria in Great Harwood. If you’re arriving at Manchester Road Station, the Ministry of Ale is a few yards away and is home to the Moonshine Brewery. Also worth a visit is the Bridge Bier Huis which has the other local brewery - Moorhouse - on tap. I recommend a Blonde Witch. ‘BÉNÉ AND HOT’ This is a strange one. Bénédictine has been distilled by monks in Normandy to a secret recipe since 1510. It’s one of the world’s oldest

03.11.2019

47

herbal liqueurs. It’s hard to believe that their biggest customer is the Burnley Miners’ Social Club! Last season Burnley F.C. sold over 1,500 bottles in the stadium. It’s been on sale (mixed with hot water) at Turf Moor for a century. This season the Man of the Match award is sponsored by Bénédictine. Apparently, Burnley’s Béné obsession dates back to the First World War when men of the East Lancashire Regiment drank it in the trenches to keep warm.

A BURNLEY FACT Burnley are one of only five clubs who have won each of the four leagues of English football. Can you name the other four? Clue: Two in the North, one in the midlands and one in the South. FAMOUS BURNLEY FANS There aren’t quite as many Burnley fans known outside of Lancashire, but those Clarets with a claim to fame are quite the faces. For starters, Prince Charles has professed his loyalty to Sean Dyche’s men and is joined by England cricketer Jimmy Anderson and former Labour ‘Spin Doctor’ Alastair Campbell.

Ask any Eagle and they’ll be able to tell you straight away the person that kickstarted their love for Crystal Palace. For the General Manager of Crystal Palace [Women], Paula Johnson, it’s her Palacesupporting husband and her former Academy-attending daughter. Three years ago, Paula would’ve laughed off any suggestion she’d now be so heavily invested in football. When Paula’s daughter got accepted at U13s level with Crystal Palace, she would be there on the touchline, week in, week out, like any supportive parent. But never would she have believed that come the end of that first season cheering her daughter on from the sidelines, she would end the campaign as Club Secretary. Paula reveals how it all came about: “I was with my husband one day sitting in the car waiting for my daughter to finish training when we saw a tweet from manager Dean Davenport about sponsoring the kitbags for the first team. As we

run our own business, we thought yes, we can do that! Through that, meeting Dean, the players and attending my daughter’s games each week we built up a rapport. “Next thing I know, an email goes out that I was CC’d into advertising for a new Club Secretary. I thought: ‘You know what? I could do that.’” At the time, Palace were in the third tier of women’s football, therefore the position of Club Secretary was a voluntary one. However, after Paula’s first season in her new role, the women’s football league system changed with the formation of the Women’s Super League, the Women’s Championship and the Women’s National League. The Championship is the league that Davenport’s side find themselves in now. However, their place in the second tier wasn’t an easy one to achieve and required a lot of hard work from Paula and the management team. Paula said: “I wrote up the licence criteria [for an application to

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

enter the Women’s Championship] with Richard [Spokes, Chairman of Palace Women] over a number of very long weeks.” But despite those long, voluntary hours it wasn’t good news at first. Paula reveals: “There was so much we had to write in terms of qualifications, ground tenures, partnerships, marketing, demographics, and then go to the FA’s headquarters and give a presentation. “The management team were all waiting in the local pub on ‘judgement day’ to find out whether we got accepted. Unfortunately, the phone call arrived and it was a no.” Despite the disappointing news, Paula and the team set about getting the club ready for the 2018/19 campaign in the third tier. But a few weeks later, the FA got back in touch: “We had put our team together for the third tier and prepared our club for hopefully winning that. However, a few weeks later came the sad news of the Doncaster Belles demise and we got a call from the FA to

03.11.2019

The management team were all waiting in the local pub on ‘judgement day’ to find out whether we got accepted. Unfortunately, the phone call arrived and it was a ‘no’

51

say we’d be taking their place. “We were now six weeks behind everyone else and that’s not just in terms of building an appropriate squad for the challenge but everything that goes with running a football club: branding, sponsorship, organising fixtures…everything! “Due to the league restructure, thankfully, there was no relegation from the Championship in its inaugural season. Therefore, we didn’t have that pressure so we could build and learn throughout last season. As it was we didn’t finish bottom.” Now, after a busy summer of recruitment - something Paula played a key role in from structuring deals to speaking with agents all whilst attending meetings with the FA and making sure the club adhered to the licence agreement for the coming season - the excitement around the new-look squad for the 2019/20 season is big. The team’s next home league game falls during the international break, which the FA have used as an opportunity to launch the inaugural ‘Women’s Football Weekend’. Therefore, be sure to get your Palace-fix by heading down for the home clash at Hayes Lane against London City Lionesses Sunday 17th November, 2pm kick-off. Nigel Martyn owes it all to the tea lady at Twerton Park. Or, rather more accurately, to her connections with a carpet salesman from St Blazey who had been impressed by the youngster between the sticks at his local non-league club. It transpires that, had Gordon Rowlands not contacted his friend at distant Bristol Rovers and suggested she encourage the Gas to send a scout down to this corner of Cornwall, life might have panned rather differently for football’s first £1m goalkeeper. It is three decades since Crystal Palace forked out a record sum to lure Martyn to London to bolster a backline which had already shipped 36 goals from 17 games in all competitions. The club pinned their hopes on the boy from Cornwall and, although he endured an ignominious start against Spurs, that faith would ultimately prove well placed. Had fate worked differently, Martyn might have been a winger or striker. His instincts had always been to play in goal when with his brother and their friends at the local park, but school teams and even junior clubs felt his skills might be

wasted as a stopper. At St Austell Rangers and Charlestown he played outfield because: “no one would let me go in goal.” It was only when his brother’s employers, Heavy Transport, lacked a ‘keeper that the youngster had his chance. He would work in a plastics factory and for a coal merchant while playing part-time at Bugle and St Blazey before Mr Rowlands’ influence told. “Rowlands knew the tea lady at Bristol Rovers and, unbeknown to me, messaged her and said: ‘We’ve got a good young goalkeeper down here. You guys should come and have a look,’” recalled Martyn. “She went in to see Gerry Francis, the manager, and he got me up on trial. “I was due to be married that summer. We had a date booked for 22 August, but Francis offered me a contract straight after the trial and we had three weeks to reschedule given Rovers were down to play at Sunderland on the day we’d booked for the wedding.” Martyn would make over 100 appearances for the Gas, before Palace took the plunge. Perry Suckling had never truly recovered

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

his poise since the nine-goal drubbing at Liverpool, and a revamp was underway across the backline. The £1m fee sanctioned by Ron Noades shocked the world. “And it did have an impact on me,” acknowledged Martyn. “Liverpool and Palace were interested according to the papers, but I was pretty naïve and didn’t even have an agent. “I spoke to one of the senior players, Geoff Twentyman, and he suggested I let the PFA deal with it all. The next thing I knew, we were moving to London to play against players I’d been happy watching on Match of the Day.” That debut was one to forget, with Martyn left exposed by a defence enduring the jitters. David Howells skimmed an equaliser beyond him from distance, Gary Lineker’s penalty was unstoppable and, cruelly, Vinny Samways’ late winner took a horrible deflection off the defensive wall. But the first of 349 appearances for the club would not prove typical. By the end of that first season he would be featuring at Wembley in an FA Cup final. The tea lady has a lot to answer for.

PALACE FOR LIFE

Wilfried Zaha joined youngsters from Palace for Life Foundation’s Premier League Kicks session in Croydon to celebrate a commitment from the Premier League to fund the community programme for another three years. The Palace star, who grew up in Croydon and attended Kicks sessions with the Foundation during his teenage years, visited the Legacy Youth Zone on Whitehorse Road. The Palace forward said: “Kicks was a big part of my childhood, it gave me somewhere to play football near my house so when I wasn’t training with Palace I always had somewhere else to go and practice my skills with my friends. “Things like Kicks bring the club and community closer together, so it’s not just about the match on a Saturday, there are activities happening all the time. Having Kicks affiliated with the club is a really good thing, if there’s a talented young

player here, they know they could get the chance to progress to the next level as well. “It’s really good to see the kids getting involved with loads of different sports, like cheerleading and boxing, and it’s mixed too, so everyone is involved together and it’s a safe place for them.” Premier League Kicks gives young people access to free football sessions, sports sessions and workshops, providing them with opportunities, support and pathways to achieve their full potential. Aimed at eight-to-18-yearolds, Kicks engages young people in positive activities through their passion for football, whilst also addressing topics covering everything from equality and inclusion to youth violence and knife crime. Premier League Kicks Coordinator at Palace for Life Foundation John Patrick added: “It’s

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

my job to make sure these sessions are fun and engaging so it’s been really special to have Wilf here today, he knows all about the benefits of Kicks from his own experience. “Kicks gives young people something to do after school, it keeps them out of trouble and gives them opportunities. Not everyone is into football, so offering a variety of sports is really important. “We work really closely with partners in the community, like Legacy Youth Zone, Croydon Council and the local police to ensure Kicks impacts as many young lives as possible.” Palace for Life Foundation has been running Premier League Kicks sessions for the past 13 years, with the programme initally launched in 2006 and has encouraged thousands of participants to take part in positive activity. Sitting down in the Academy’s canteen, full-back David Boateng went through his journey to a professional contract at Palace.

03.11.2019

58

David Boateng has spent more than half of his life with the Crystal Palace Academy. From kicking around on the pitches of Dulwich at the age of eight to signing his first professional contract this summer, the now-18-year-old full-back has had his heart set on football for the best part of a decade. Boateng’s first experience of the competitive sport was early in his life. With his father a coach at south London-based Hillyfielders F.C., the youngster trained in the shadow of Camberwell New Cemetery, “used to come in 10 minutes before kick-off,” and “go to training in any kit.” But when scouts from Palace spotted Boateng running the wing for Hillyfielders, all of that would soon change. “It felt very different when I was playing with Palace to when I was with Sunday league,” Boateng recalls after a lengthy meeting and day spent training with his Development teammates. “My Sunday team wasn’t professional, you could go to training in any kit. But with Palace, you have to wear Palace kit. At Palace, you have to warm-up. It felt different. There’s a huge difference between Sunday league and Academy level.” One key change for Boateng - as it is for so many young footballers was the adaptation of his position. Now well established as an attacking full-back, Boateng had previously experienced both the flanks and leading the line in front of goal.

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

03.11.2019

“I was a midfielder back then but that first training session with Palace, there were no strikers so the scout put me as a striker. I think I scored two goals and from there I was a striker. “Then I was a midfielder from Under-15s to last year. Dave Reddington changed me into a midfielder. Shawsy [Richard Shaw] changed me to full-back.” Why? “Because Aaron WanBissaka went to the first-team. We needed a full-back and he [Shaw] put me there. Very, very big boots. Aaron was getting assists every match and no one could go past him. I only had one match with him and in that match no one could go past him! He was very, very good. I just felt: if he can do it, why not me?” With the drive and determination to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Boateng knew that he, as all aspiring footballers do, had a narrow window to impress the club and secure his place in football after stepping up to the Under-23s last season. “You’ve basically got two years to impress the Under-18 and Under-23 managers so you can get a contract,” Boateng said. “Every time you step

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

onto that pitch, you don’t think about it but at the back of your mind you know you have to impress today. Every game. You haven’t got time to have a bad minute. You always have to be there. I enjoy it, you have to enjoy the pressure sometimes.” And the pressure paid off. This summer, Boateng was handed the club’s vote of confidence - receiving his first professional contract. “You have to wait. There’s a meeting of each individual player on whether they’re going to get a contract or not. I got it and I’m very, very happy to have got it. I was nervous before, to be honest. You always have to believe you’re going to get it. “My Dad was with me. He always told me if I’ve done well or what I need to improve on. He’s been there for me a lot. Not just in football but in life. He’s always shown me good manners will take you far. That’s what he showed me. “Dad said: ‘Just keep working hard.’ He’s always happy but he’s never satisfied. He always wants more and that’s what makes me always want to improve because I know that whatever I do, he wants me to do more. He’ll be satisfied when I’m playing on TV!”

IN TIME By Ian King

Today, Club Historian Ian King looks back at the last game of Croydon-born Steve Kember’s Palace career. Kember represented the Eagles over many years in a number of capacities, as well as also playing for today’s opponents, Leicester City.

Having watched the club as a five-year-old from the terraces, Kember has, aside from his contributions as a player, served Palace in many roles. No one can underestimate the contribution the Palace legend has made over the years.

PALACEXI IN TIME By Ian King

THIS 90 MINUTES The team’s fortunes had revived during January 1980, following a disastrous December, but things took another dip after this visit from the Potters. In a somewhat unforgettable affair neither side could produce many noteworthy efforts and it was witnessed by the lowest home attendance so far that season. Kember produced virtually the only Palace effort on target that was well-saved by Peter Fox, before Stoke’s goal arrived midway through the second-half. Jim Cannon lost the ball to Garth Crooks who sent in a rasping

shot that John Burridge did well to parry but the ball ran free to Lee Chapman who slid home. A SECOND PROMOTION On that memorable evening in May 1979, when the Eagles dramatically won the Second Division Championship, Kember became the first Palace player to feature in both promotions to the top-flight. The arrival of Gerry Francis from QPR meant he found his midfield opportunities limited but injuries to Peter Nicholas and Francis found him back in the side at the start of 1980. With the injured players returning Kember found himself on the sidelines and, although offered a temporary position looking after the juniors, he decided to sign for Vancouver Whitecaps a month after his 291st - and final - game in a Palace shirt. LEICESTER CONNECTION After four years with Chelsea, Kember then joined Leicester City in the summer of 1975. Kember was more or less a mainstay for manager Jimmy Bloomfield but two changes in that position saw Kember fall out of favour as the Foxes were relegated to Division Two.

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

In the autumn of 1978 Palace manager Terry Venables brought Kember back to Selhurst Park in a £40,000 deal to add experience to the precocious talents of a young team put together to push for a return to the top tier of the Football League. BACK AT SELHURST PARK Fifteen months after leaving Palace for Canada, Kember returned as youth team coach. However, when Dario Gradi was dismissed as manager in November 1981 he was appointed caretaker manager and steered the club clear of relegation to Division Three. Replaced by Alan Mullery in the summer of 1982, Kember would be back on the coaching staff in 1993 and at the end of April 2001 he was put in charge again for the last two games against Portsmouth and Stockport County as once more the club faced relegation to the third tier. Steve Bruce then came in as the boss but when he suddenly departed that October, Kember was again caretaker for a month. Trevor Francis took over from Bruce but again, when Francis departed in April 2003, for a third time Kember was in charge but this time he was appointed on a permanent basis.

67

SCHOOLBOY TO CAPTAIN Steve Kember was born in Croydon in December 1948 and signed first as a schoolboy and then apprentice in 1963. Within a month of signing professional terms on his 17th birthday, Kember made his first team debut against Bristol City and quickly matured into the midfield dynamo for our promotion season to Division One in 1968/69 in which he was ever-present. In October 1970 Kember gained his first England U23 cap and the good news continued, as the departure of John Sewell saw him named as Eagles captain.

When the owners took over in 2010, the desire was always to achieve an Academy with a Category 1 status. It has been an ongoing challenge to find the perfect facility, but after a thorough search we believe we have found the perfect site for the exciting next step. The Academy’s current setup on Copers Cope Road just wasn’t big enough to house all 10 teams – people may not realise just how big of an operation the club is running with sides from Under-8s right up to the first-team. And for that to work we needed all facilities and pitches to be moved under one roof and this is what the Category 1 plans will give us. Every department at the Academy, of which there are eight elements from education to scouting, will get such an uplift from all being on one site. We will have purposebuilt classrooms, gymnasiums and meeting rooms which will give us

greater opportunities on the player care and mentoring side of things. Providing a first-class holistic experience is something Dougie Freedman and Steve Parish, and all those involved with the Academy, are keen to provide the players with. Furthermore, it also means we will be able to scout players seven days a week and will have more time on the training pitch with them. Life as an elite athlete is uncomfortable at times. However, with top-class professionals speaking out more and more about their struggles, mental health has become a topic players are now more comfortable discussing. It’s important to share your experiences so others realise they aren’t the only ones going through something and the addition of a full-time psychologist will help the players cope with any potential issues they’re facing. Putting player wellbeing at the forefront of everything we are doing

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

will see the club hire eight new tutors at the Academy, to make up for any school time missed due to footballing commitments. This will make sure that all players will not regress educationally and will benefit from small group tutoring sessions. The ability to now have morning training sessions, as opposed to evening ones where the players are potentially tired after their days schooling, will be hugely beneficial to them and the coaches. Furthermore, it removes the chaotic rush for parents and players to finish school before getting over to Copers Cope in time for training. I must say that the players and the parents of our current Academy and Development sides have been fantastically patient, and now they will be part of the best Academy in south London and that is hugely deserved and benefical to their further development in football.

71

It has been an exciting week for Crystal Palace’s Academy setup, with the club unveiling plans for us to get Category 1 status. Steve Parish has always backed the Academy and this will take us to the next level in terms of football, education and player care.

DEAN DAVENPORT

The club have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to make that day so much more than just the 90 minutes of football; the plans in place are really exciting. We always have our loyal supporters who come to our games, and we are renowned in the Championship for having one of the most vocal and passionate set of fans. It is exciting to think we can add to that fanbase on the 17th, where we will be hoping to welcome plenty of new Palace fans as we look to give them an insight into what the club does. Two weeks ago, we faced Champions League semi-finalists and Women’s Super League outfit Chelsea. Despite losingw, I thought the team played really well and contained the Blues assuredly. It gave us plenty of positives to take into last Sunday’s game against London Bees, a match I told the squad was a must win. We tweaked the

system a little bit and that resulted in Ella Rutherford having her best game of the season since joining, and she fully deserved her well-taken brace. It was disappointing to be two goals up and then see the Bees pull it back to 2-2 but the response to get the late winner was pleasing; we showed our Palace spirit, dug in and kept on going to make the most of that bit of luck that was handed to us late on. As well as praising Ella, I’d like to also mention two players who have started every game for us so far this campaign: Annabel Johnson and Amy Goddard. When I knew Amy was available I wanted to sign her straight away - her Women’s Super League experience and physical attributes have been vital to us already. Annabel is a fighter and a leader, on and off the field. She has the Palace DNA of ‘never say die’. Both players have a kind of ‘domino effect’ on the whole squad, as they inspire

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER CITY

their teammates when they see them fighting for every ball, not giving up and consistently putting in imperious performances full of passion. I’d like to give special thanks to the Crystal Palace Vice Presidents’ group. It’s fantastic news that another part of the main club have decided to get involved in the women’s section. It’s important that we get as much involvement from different groups as possible and to have the Vice Presidents backing us is really unique and shows that Crystal Palace is a one-club community. The VPs’ support will help us in so many ways from new equipment to developing aspects off the pitch, too. This is an exciting and generous opportunity handed to us to grow the club further. In return we, as a part of Crystal Palace, cannot wait to start working alongside the VPs and highlight their great work within the club.

73

Off the back of the Women’s World Cup’s success I was delighted to hear of the ‘Women’s Weekend’ initiative from the FA. For us, that weekend falls on the 17th November against London City Lionesses, which will be a passionate local derby so it’s a great fixture to have been thrown up.
