After four difficult matches, we have reached the last step of a five-game run which pitted us against five of the league’s top six clubs. The players anticipate a challenging test every time they take to the field but to face five of the country’s most formidable sides poses a consistent level of difficulty few seasons typically throw up. However, the team have acquitted themselves quite well despite a meagre points return and I do not feel in any way disheartened by our recent performances under such circumstances, especially after previously enjoying a fine start to the season. We must also remember that the demanding matches will not end this afternoon as we compete with the highest calibre of English football week in, week out. That said, European Champions Liverpool are in excellent form this season and we will have to call upon all of our strength, commitment and focus during the testing 90 minutes ahead of us. To do this we are fortunate to have a full strength squad available, with several players who have enjoyed

success with their national teams during the recent break. We are happy, of course, that the confidence gained from these results will prove beneficial for us this afternoon. Away from the pitch, I was privileged to spend time with Palace for Life Foundation’s Down’s Syndrome Eagles last week. I met a team of fantastic young men who are passionate about football and it was enjoyable to see how enthusiastic they are and how much playing football brings so much joy into their lives. Being reminded of what football means at its purest level is a stark display of the incredible effect sport can have upon lives both young and old. I would like to thanks the DS Eagles for sharing their session with me and congratulate all of the coaches and helpers who make sessions like this possible. Returning now to today’s game, I am sure our team will continue to give their best and we are counting, as always, on your loyal support to see us through the game. Enjoy the game!

I’m back from an international break which was a good one for me because I played in both games. But we were trying to qualify through the group and we didn’t manage that, so now we will now try through the Nations League to get to the Euros. The main thing is, I’m returning healthy and ready to be back at our club. Going back to the last time we were at our home and we heard the sad news about Ady, our friend and important member of our squad. We were all shocked, and our heads were full of the news about Ady going into the Leicester game. It meant preparing for the game was not easy; it was difficult for us all at the club to lose someone who was always there for us and always positive. Looking back at the match, and what happened on the pitch, it was an even game. And then one small detail decides the result: a corner. After that, the game changed but I think we were

good – not very good, but good - and if it had happened that maybe we scored from a corner we would’ve got some points from that game, a game we didn’t deserve to lose. Chelsea was our last match before the international break, and it was a game I felt our shape and organisation was good. Perhaps we lacked a little bit of composure on the ball, and should have kept possession longer because then we could hurt them. But again, Chelsea are a top team and scored with their first chance of the second-half. We did have a clear-cut chance with Tomkins’ header from a free-kick but as we pushed and opened up they get their second. We always place so much importance on winning and remaining unbeaten at Selhurst Park but when you have the schedule we have had in recent games then it is a difficult

task. Today is no different in that we will aim to avoid defeat, look to win but also we have another tough opposition facing us. It won’t be easy. With Manchester City, Liverpool are the best team in the country. We need to take our chances today as they may not come as often as we are used to. We respect them and know they’re unbeaten in the Premier League for a long time, but we respect all teams and this run doesn’t change the way we approach the 90 minutes. This Liverpool team is one we know keep a lot of the same players and the same manager during the last three seasons, and they have improved. We know their strengths, but that means we also know their weaknesses and how to hurt them. At Selhurst we have ended unbeaten runs many, many times and I believe we have the quality to do so today. Make some noise!

It’s been nearly three weeks since we were all together at our home of Selhurst. No matter how many games I play here, in front of you all, I am always excited to return.

We have had some excellent player representation on this recent international break. It’s great to see our captain Luka back for his national team and Jordan scoring for Ghana. I’d also like to congratulate Patrick on making his competitive debut for Holland and Wayne on his magnificent performance for Wales on Tuesday, helping them progress to the Euros. But perhaps the nicest thing was Christian on the scoresheet twice as Belgium romped home in qualification. Travelling to games I have often been contacted by distraught fans who have left their ticket at home or lost it on the way. We usually manage to help them but in this day and age, it’s so archaic that we have to rely on a physical ticket. So I’m pleased to say for this match we are working with Liverpool to enable 200 of their supporters to get into the away end using their own club’s Season Ticket/ Membership card – which has their ticket loaded onto it. We will be doing

the same for our fans’ trip to Anfield next year. If successful, it could make away days a whole lot easier! Those of you in the Holmesdale will know that the stand regularly suffers from leaks. Unfortunately when it was built there was no way to actually get onto the roof without major scaffolding. In the last few months, you may have seen this on both sides of the stand, and we have built a permanent way to access the roof, enalbing it to have its first clean in 25 years! The results are pretty amazing and we can now also fix the leaks and refurbish areas that were suffering from them. It’s a slow process addressing the many years of neglect but we are getting there. Hats off to Sharon, our Director of Operations, and her team who are working tirelessly to improve things. In my last set of notes, I wrote about our redevelopment plans for our Academy site in Bromley. Securing permission to enable us to achieve Category 1 status is of critical

importance to the future of our club, as we continue to identify, attract, secure and nurture the very best talent south of the river. But we also believe it’s good for local residents, because under our control the site will be safe, secure and maintained as a green open space with no threat of residential development. We are expecting the council to publish our application on their website imminently, and we encourage all supporters - especially local residents - to back our plans on the website. Our Under-12s recently won the remembrance-focused Premier League Truce Tournament Qualifier. As a result, they travel to Ypres, Belgium, next month for the main international tournament. Congratulations and good luck to them! Like everyone lucky enough to be here today for yet another Selhurst Park sellout, I can’t wait for this one. Make yourselves heard for Roy’s team. When Roy Hodgson selected Andros Townsend to start in the recent Premier League clash against Chelsea, it was the 90th time the manager had utilised the winger; a record number of appearances for any player during Hodgson’s tenure in south London so far. Hodgson’s faith in the winger’s ability is a testament to Townsend’s professionalism and consistency, and it is a statistic that the former Tottenham Hotspur player is proud of – even if it was one that he didn’t know before. Upon hearing the stat, Townsend appeared to have a moment of personal reflection, one that, if we were to guess, reviewed the various decisions he has made over his life. All those years of sacrifice as a youngster, and several loan deals around the country, were all worth it to still be enjoying achievements at the top-level of the game as a 28-year-old. Reflecting on his career so far in a crucial season, Townsend begins: “I didn’t know that [stat] until now but it’s obviously a huge achievement to be the most selected player. And it’s something I put down to a good relationship with the manager; he knows what he’s going to get from me, he knows he can rely on me.” It’s somewhat endearing to see the pride that Hodgson’s continual faith in Townsend

evokes, with the winger now bouncing a ball whilst skidding around on an office chair after pensive reflection moments earlier, flying across the room to touch the wooden desk: “And - touch wood - I’ve always made myself fit and available for him; I’ve only missed

those two things, we’d hypothesise it is also, in part, to do with his ability to be self-critical. That was something Townsend was capable of doing after losing his starting berth a couple of games into the current league campaign. “I think it was pretty obvious that, not only me, but the team weren’t good enough in the first few games. We weren’t picking up points, weren’t creating chances. “There was a time in training where I was struggling and he [Hodgson] pulled me to the side and said: ‘Look, we still believe in you, you might not be playing well at the minute or in the team at the minute but keep your head, keep doing what you’re doing and your chances will come.’ The next day I scored against Norwich City off the bench. “When you aren’t creating chances, you aren’t scoring goals, the attacking players are in danger of losing their place and I was one of them. I could’ve either sulked or used it to build up my confidence, build up my fitness in training during the week.” Townsend opted for the latter, and when those substitute appearances were offered, he took the odd minutes here and there to demonstrate to Hodgson that the player he had selected so regularly was still available. “Then I knew I had my confidence back and it was just a

case of being patient and waiting for my chance to get back in to the starting XI. That came against Arsenal and we got a deserved point from two goals down.” The characteristics displayed by the Palace No.10 mean it is no surprise to hear, regularly, about the mentor role Townsend takes with the Under-23 players that earn valuable experience around the first-team squad in training. That role as a friendly and experienced head for the youngsters is something Townsend takes seriously due to the absence of that figure when he was looking to make his breakthrough at Tottenham Hotspur. “When I was coming through the senior players were brutal,” he says. “For example, in training they always wanted you to pass to them, they didn’t want you to express yourself. If you turned down a pass and had a shot they’d tell you about it. “I always knew I wanted to be different with the youngsters. If they came up and got the chance, I wanted to allow them to express themselves and not feel under pressure. It’s something that I’ve tried to do, let the youngsters come up and flourish, rather than worrying about making the firstteamers happy. I don’t want them worrying: ‘Oh is Andros going to say this or is Andros going to do that if I don’t pass to him.’”

Brandon Pierrick, who has started all of the U23s’ games so far this season, is one player in particular that Townsend has taken under his proverbial ‘Starman’ wing: “Quite a few of the players have caught my eye and come up and done

themselves justice. But the main player I like at the moment is Brandon. I think that’s because he’s a tricky winger, he’s trained with no fear and he’s been looking to take on senior defenders and that reminds me of when I was a youngster.”

With nine different loan spells between 2009-2013, Townsend would’ve met his fair few obstacles when it came to senior professionals. However, it’s a time in his career that he credits strongly with his development to becoming an England international, and something he encourages all youngsters to look to do. “It’s a natural progression now [going out on loan] because there’s so much money in the Premier League it’s difficult for youngsters to get a chance initially. You need to swallow your pride and go out on loan, whether it be League One, League Two or Conference, and then slowly build your way up. “I went to League One, then had a few spells in the Championship and then I got my Premier League loan. And that gives the manager the belief that you can play at this level and he won’t hesitate to bring you in. “When I went out on loan I viewed it as not a place to make friends but as a place to do as well as possible and to help the team and then move on to the next stage. I was fortunate enough to do that and use each loan as a stepping stone.” Although eventually Townsend did go against his ‘not looking to make friends’ mantra, as during his time at Ipswich Town for the final months of 2010, he did make a friend: Connor Wickham.

those early days: “He [Wickham] has obviously matured a lot from when I was at Ipswich, because he was just 17 at the time, still young and learning. But now we are teammates again and he’s still just as hungry to play football as he was back at Ipswich; he still

wants to learn and improve. “It’s nice that you see someone when they’re young and then you get a chance to play with them again later in your career.” Friendships like Townsend’s and Wickham’s are everywhere to see at Palace; it’s part of the club’s ethos as a family-first, community-led club. And that is why the news of Adem ‘Ady’ Gredelj’s passing before the Leicester City game hit all the players and staff involved at Crystal Palace Football Club hard. The ball stops bouncing and the chair stops skidding. Townsend lets out a deep breath to compose himself, and then he begins: “Ady was a guy who would do anything for you, anything you asked him was never too much trouble, whether you need a hand with your luggage or you’re arriving to training, and close to being late, he’d park your car for you. “He was just the nicest guy. He was a security guard but he was so much more than that to the boys. The first face you’d see coming into training and the last face you’d see when you left, so it has hit all of us hard that a member of our squad has sadly passed away. “It doesn’t feel the same without him around the training ground. He was our go-to guy. He will never be forgotten.”

EAGLE EYE WITH PALACE TV'S CHRIS GRIERSON

Along with: “So do you work full-time for Palace?”, “You’re that competition winner, aren’t you?”, “Why didn’t Pardew like you?” and “Was it upsetting losing out to Joe McElderry in series 6 of The X Factor, Olly?”, one of the most common questions I’m asked is: “What do you all do during the international break?” The answer is we actually do quite a lot. It’s usually a good chance to catch up on edits that have been put on the backburner for various reasons or film something more fun on the training pitch when there is no match to prepare for. However, during the most recent break we turned our attention to the Crystal Palace women’s squad for the national Women’s Football Weekend. It was a great opportunity for

Palace fans to get down to support the Eagles at Hayes Lane against London City Lionesses and although it wasn’t the result they wanted, it was fantastic that 804 people came to cheer the teams on. How much does the tone of that last paragraph sound like a manager or captain’s columns?! Moving on to less managerial things, we were delighted with

the video content we captured in the build-up. Dean Davenport, his coaches and the squad are always so welcoming when we come down to training. Best of all, they’re always up for a bit of fun, too. ice hockey-style shootouts that North American leagues tried in the 90s. Both can be found on Palace TV, which I’m sure is promoted somewhere on this page! We also went to visit Réa Laudat, who balances playing for Crystal Palace Women with her day job as an interior designer. I chatted to her at one of her latest projects and it was so impressive to hear how much hard work goes into juggling two careers. Another video that went out during the break, that is definitely worth 20 minutes of your time, is Darren Ambrose interviewing Wilfried Zaha. Darren had never interviewed anybody before but it’s clear he’s a natural. I gave him some questions the day before and he memorised all of them plus loads of his own as well. He nailed the pre-interview clap too. If you’ve ever wondered why there are often outtake videos where you see someone clapping, it’s because we do that at the start of any video that is shot on more than one camera. As the sound only goes into one camera,

it allows us to sync up sound and picture in the edit. You just line up the sound of the clap with the visual of the hands meeting. What an interviewee for Darren to start with too. It certainly beats my first interview, which was the opening of a new 3G pitch at a school in Orpington. No offence, Orpington. If you are offended, take it up with Olly Murs.

Alexander-Arnold has taken 15 shots this season, the fifth-most for Liverpool, which sees him behind the expected front three, whilst taking just one less than Gini Wijnaldum. Throw in the fact that the rightback is the highest for most accurate long balls [63] and key passes [42] - almost double Mané in second place [23] – it’s easy to see the job Palace’s left-winger and left-back have to do to contain Liverpool's orchestrator today. But Alexander-Arnold can be

HISTORY Watford away has been a regular fixture for thousands of Palace fans, with our first visit there coming in 1921 during the inaugural season of the Third Division (South). We then played each other at this level on a continual basis until 1958 when we were then both founding members of the newly-created Fourth Division. Since then, we have also played each other in the Third Division, Second Division, First Division, the Championship and the Premier League. We’ve also met each other in the League Cup, FA Cup and a certain match in the 2013 Championship play-offs. With 120 competitive games played between us and the Hornets, they have been a more regular opponent than our traditional rivals

of Brighton & Hove Albion, Millwall and Charlton Athletic. MEMORABLE MATCHES That play-off final in 2013 was not just a memorable football match, it was one of the most memorable days of my life. My son Jack was a Palace mascot walking on to the pitch handin-hand with the Jedi. The game itself was incredibly tense and almost a blur, but Julián’s save, Wardy’s header off the line, the foul on Wilf and the ice cool penalty from ‘Super Kev’ are etched in my memory forever. Matches at Vicarage Road are much less so, although I do remember an important 3-1 win in March 2010, a month before ‘Survival Sunday’. TRAVEL Despite being in Hertfordshire,

Watford is (just) inside the M25 so there is often a debate as to whether they are a London club or not. The journey by car can take ages and it makes sense to use the M25 rather than crawl across the middle of the capital. We always tend to go by train. There is a direct service to Watford Junction from East Croydon that stops at Selhurst, Thornton Heath, Norbury, Streatham Common, Balham etc and takes just over an hour. Alternatively use London Overground from Clapham Junction (changing at Willesden Junction) and get off at Watford High Street as it’s a shorter walk to the stadium. PUBS AND BEER Bad news here. Watford away is the worst trip for pubs and beer in the football calendar. It makes me long

for away days in Derby, Nottingham and Bristol. Quite simply, Watford is a beer ‘desert’. There is only one pub in the town in the ‘Good Beer Guide’ and that’s only there because it’s not quite as bad as all the others. Most Palace fans tend to use the cavernous Wetherspoons in the high street which is on the site of a former cinema. A little further away, the Rising Sun at Berkhamsted has a great reputation for quality ales. Local microbreweries to look out for include Paradigm, Pope’s Yard, Tring and Watling Street but you’ll struggle to find their beers on sale anywhere in Watford!

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS Adrian Mariappa, Ben Watson and Adlene Guedioura have played for both clubs in recent years. But I don’t think anyone can look past Hertfordshire boy Kevin Phillips as being the most important exWatford player in the modern era for Palace. Signed on transfer deadline day in January 2013 by his former manager Ian Holloway, Kevin scored six crucial goals in 14 appearances for us, including that priceless winner in the play-off final.

Expecting an impersonal response to our request for an interview, we emailed Dennis - owner of D’Solo’s boutique in Crystal Palace - and he caught us off guard. He called us back. “People send me emails and I pick up the phone and call them,” he says. “I love communicating with people; I’m a people’s person. Me sitting behind a desk just doing computers doesn’t sit well with me.” Dennis lounges back in a plush leather armchair as jazz hums from a MacBook perched atop a clothing rack which bookends an array of jackets, shirts and pullovers, each displaying a dazzling array of pattern and colour. On the walls around him are images of cultural style icons: James Dean and Audrey Hepburn. Dennis is right at home, mixing a laid-back hosting of the Palace programme with doting on customers - who more resemble friends and curious passers-by than paying consumers. Naturally, though, Dennis should feel at home, having owned D’Solo’s in the heart of his boyhood community for over 20 years. A Crystal Palace local through and through, Dennis was born around the corner from his store on

Church Road and hasn’t left the area since. He paints a fond image of the neighbourhood with a nostalgic vibrancy that runs into the present day. “When I was a little kid I remember my mum would give me a shopping list,” he recalls. “We had no money. I’d run to the end of the road, go into the greengrocers and I’d have to get a bag of apples, some spinach but you’d always know that the man would give you a free orange. “You’d run to the bakers and get the loaf of bread and they give you the cakes and that makes you feel a sense of being someone. You run back up the road and see the man who says, ‘oh, look, there’s Mr Brown’s son.’ There was a community when we were kids. It was a real beautiful community. “People come from different countries, they’ve moved here and haven’t got any family but they know the guy in this shop, they know the guy in that shop. Then they become friends. I know people who live alone but they don’t feel like they live alone because they’ve got this community and there’s a community spirit in Crystal Palace. Everyone’s welcome into the community, I’ve grown up knowing that and that’s why I still

live in Crystal Palace. It’s my home.” His personable, talkative nature meant that D’Solo’s opened with a bang back in 1999 as friends, family and neighbours all became regular visitors to Dennis and his everchanging collection of fashion. With word of mouth only growing his store further, today Dennis has expanded the shop and taken on the role of a quasi-personal shopper for the same customers he served 20 years ago. “They all become friends, the customers,” he explains. “Some guys will come in and be here for half an hour and we’ll put the world to rights.” But while Dennis speaks with enthusiasm and passion not only about his customers - or friends one thing sparks him into another animated gear: Crystal Palace F.C. A Manchester United fan by birth, Dennis developed a love for the Eagles as he began to follow his local club back in the ‘70s. When Palace’s 20th Century peaked, however, he had become a diehard fan and throws his head back with laughter as he vivaciously retells the story of one iconic day in 1990. “I was playing a game against Tooting and Mitcham United FC

I was in the Holte End at Villa Park behind the goal. Liverpool were so arrogant: there was John Barnes, Ian Rush, Steve Nichol. They were like the invincibles but Palace kept clawing back. There was Wrighty hobbling and all bandaged up. When Palace scored that last goal through Pardew, it was mental. “After the game were the best scenes ever. We stopped at the first service station, went into the service station and it was just a sea of red and blue and everyone was singing. It was the best experience ever. You’ll never, ever get that experience again.” The excitement was too much by this point and a rendition of ‘Oh, South London is Wonderful’ followed, though we won’t write it out word for word. Sitting in a quiet, well stocked boutique as jazz hums from a MacBook under the classy gaze of Audrey Hepburn, Dennis’ chanting and energy for clothing, customers and the community were anything but an impersonal response. And we were all the more thankful for it.

The rot kicked in towards the end of October. Actually, it had reared almost from the moment Palace took an improbable lead at Villa Park and dared to envisage claiming a notable first away win of their top-flight return against a team who would run Liverpool so close at the top. As it was, David Platt’s brace ended up wrecking those dreams and, within weeks, Steve Coppell’s side had been steamrollered by all and sundry. A swashbuckling Nottingham Forest scored in the first-minute and eventually rattled in five with ease at the City Ground in a lopsided League Cup Third Round replay. Manchester City, with whom Palace had been promoted a few months earlier and a team who had previously been struggling, also plundered in the opening foray forward and strolled to a comfortable three-goal success at Maine Road. Clive Allen, once a Palace player, pilfered the hosts’ third. Tottenham Hotspur’s scrappy, fortunate yet devastatingly cruel success at Selhurst Park on Nigel Martyn’s debut, complete with horribly deflected winner, further anchored the mood. There was little consolation to be had in the draws picked up against

Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday, either, given that Coppell’s team had been leading in both games only to surrender a lead late. The sense was the wheels were coming off. Palace had slumped to 16th place, just a point from the cut off. And yet the first fixture in December brought promise of respite. Queens Park Rangers began the afternoon below Palace in the table, in the bottom three and, apparently, a club in crisis. Yes, they had beaten their hosts on the opening weekend at Loftus Road, but there had only been one victory in the subsequent three months before Liverpool, improbably, had been seen off in mid-November in west London. Even that had not been enough to save Trevor Francis, whose standing had never really recovered from his decision to fine Martin Allen for leaving the team hotel prior to a match at Newcastle the previous season to attend the birth of his son. The managing director, Clive Berlin, announced there had been a “difference of opinion over Trevor’s managerial style” as Francis departed, with Don Howe duly brought in as firstteam coach in what felt an innovative, more continental style model. Yet, even with ‘new manager

bounce’, Palace would have fancied their chances on the quagmire at Selhurst Park that afternoon. The visitors had included Kenny Sansom in their ranks but, perhaps more significantly, paired their recent free transfer signing from Rangers, Ray Wilkins, on debut alongside another veteran in Peter Reid in central midfield. The pair boasted a combined age of 66, the oldest combination in QPR’s history. Palace, in contrast, had youth and energy. As the drizzle set in, surely their pace and power would hold sway in the mud? We should have known better. What played out was a masterclass. That apparently creaking combination in QPR’s midfield rolled back the years and dictated the tempo of a one-sided contest. Palace huffed and puffed but never came close to disrupting their rivals’ rhythm and Wilkins and Reid ran riot. Danny Maddix nodded the visitors ahead after an error from Martyn. Wilkins’ quality shone through in the build-up to Andy Sinton’s second. Reid set up Sinton for a third after the break. The experiment of playing Geoff Thomas at centre-half in a makeshift back-line had not worked. Palace needed further strengthening.

Roy Hodgson took charge of a different type of training last week, leading Palace for Life Foundation’s Down’s Syndrome Eagles at their weekly session. The Palace manager surprised the delighted players, who range in age from eight to 24, with Hodgson arriving to cheers and high fives at the Monks Hill Sports Centre in south Croydon. Hodgson, who first met the players back in September at a Foundation event, said: “This group are just fantastic, their enthusiasm, their humanity and their affection, it’s very difficult not to enjoy their company. When I was asked to come here, I was more than happy and it’s great to see them all again. “Our Foundation does a wonderful job, and you can see how much the children enjoy it and how good the coaches are with the young players, so it’s 100% positive.

“It’s not just about coaching, it’s about enjoyment, pure and simple. The main thing is that they go home each week having really enjoyed it, having had fun and a lot of encouragement and positivity.” The team has been together for five years, training weekly and taking part in friendly matches and tournaments against other clubs. Sessions are based around football skills and small matches, but are also vital in helping players to develop their social and communication skills, as well as motor skills such as agility and coordination. Roy continued: “Sometimes when you’re working at the top level, you forget the real basics of what football means to people. We get caught up in the winning and the losing and the hype around the professional game, but really football is this, it’s people coming out with their children on a cold autumn

night and watching them enjoy themselves, with no worries about anything other than that.” The DS Eagles were also treated to a visit from Palace Women players Freya Holdaway, who is the club captain, and Ashlee Hincks, who joined in with the training session and played in the match alongside the players. Holdaway and Hincks ensured the session ended on a high for the players by inviting them to be mascots at their game against the London City Lionesses last weekend. This season the DS Eagles are supported by a new sponsor, Croydon-based computer games retailer, Go2Games, who have provided the team with professional new kit and will help them to travel to additional games and tournaments. It is reactions like that, to a situation that must be a tad annoying, and certainly inconvenient, that highlights why Pierrick is a firm favourite of the coaches down at Beckenham, with the midfielder the only player to start all U23 games so far this season. Reflecting on the strong start to his season, he said: “It shows that the manager has a lot of faith in me to play me in these games. It’s good for me because I’m still developing, still young and I’m learning a lot and the manager and coaches are willing to help me every step of the way.” Developing on the pitch, Pierrick has been learning and adapting off of it, too, with the club’s decision to enter the Premier League Cup for this season throwing up a few new challenges for our aspiring footballers: “It has been

a new challenge for me because I haven’t really played against them sort of teams [Premier League 2 sides] in a long while. And when we have away games, going to places like Burnley, Blackburn and Middlesbrough over the season, the long journeys are something I’m not used to. I’m adapting to all these new things in my surroundings.” The U23s are clearly a tightknit group, that’s abundantly clear when you enter the canteen at the training ground, the buzz of laughter and chatter is similar to that of an engaged common room. And these long trips to stadiums in the north help harness that togetherness within the squad: “I look to travel up with my ‘day one’ Malachi [Boateng] and Brandon Aveiro but if those lads aren’t there, we’ve got a good squad and all mix.” If the grin on Pierrick’s face from being told he is the only player to start every game for the U23s so far this season was big, then the one that appeared when he was told that Andros Townsend had said that he reminds Andros of himself at that age, looked like it was never going to wane. “Woah” Pierrick remarked, all

whilst trying to stifle his bashful smile, before continuing: “It’s a nice feeling hearing him say those sorts of things because he’s obviously a top player. He’s doing his thing on the pitch, I’m doing my thing and I hope one day we will be playing on the pitch together.” Townsend as something of a mentor is a comment that has regularly come up during our chats with the Academy and Development sides, and Pierrick was no different in heaping praise on the senior pro’s influence: “One hundred percent [Townsend is a mentor]. Whenever a player comes across to train with the first-team, Andros and a couple of the others are the ones to go to if you’re feeling a little bit by yourself; they will help integrate you.” With a brace in pre-season for the first-team against AFC Wimbledon, the season Pierrick is having is no surprise. And with the club now targeting Category 1 Academy status, the impact it could have on the development on Pierrick and his teammates could be huge. Who knows, perhaps Palace have another Starman waiting in the wings.

GOALLESS AT ANFIELD On Saturday 8th January the Eagles, challenging for promotion from Division Three, had travelled to Liverpool to face the First Division champions and league leaders to put on a display that replicated the cup run of the previous season. Understandably, Liverpool saw more of the ball but the defence, who were well marshalled by Jim Cannon and Ian Evans, held firm. The resolute defending almost

reaped its rewards at Anfield, with the Eagles striking regularly via counter-attacks, which brought several fine saves from ‘keeper Ray Clemence from Phil Holder, George Graham and Barry Silkman. A lot of the focus was on Kenny Sansom, with many eager to see how our young, talented left-back dealt with the threat of Kevin Keegan. The answer is: Keegan, as the game progressed, would eventually end up dropping back in to a midfield role as the Reds’ main man looked elsewhere to make an impact. But Palace remained resolute. REPLAY AT SELHURST PARK Palace started on the front foot in view of a crowd of over 40,000 and after 17 minutes Paul Hinshelwood intercepted a pass by Kevin Keegan, played a one-two with Nicky Chatterton and surged forward to let fly with a 25-yard shot that dipped over Clemence for the opening goal. The lead lasted just over three minutes though, when Keegan finished off a move with a low shot and the score remained level until midway through the second-half. to take control but when George Graham scored following a run by Chatterton it brought the tie alight again for the final few minutes but it was to no avail. Post-match Liverpool manager Bob Paisley was full of praise for the Palace team. WE’D MET BEFORE IN THE FA CUP This was not the first time that a Palace team in the third tier had been drawn against First Division Liverpool in the FA Cup. This occurred early in 1938 when Liverpool had to fight hard to gain a replay from the goalless draw at Selhurst Park on Saturday 8th January Four days later at Anfield Liverpool had the opportunity to establish supremacy in the first-half but Hanson shot wide from a penalty kick. However, 10 minutes in to the second-half Ernie Waldron put Palace ahead only for Shafto to equalise and the game then headed into extra time. Misfortune befell Palace’s Nick Collins when, attempting to clear, he put through his own net. Towards the end Joe Fagan wrapped it up for Liverpool from the penalty spot, with the Reds progressing to the next round, 3-1.

BRIGHTON RIVALRY IGNITED Before the trip to Anfield, Palace had to overcome Brighton & Hove Albion in the First Round, with the Seagulls now an arch-rival of Palace’s, which was only intensified when Alan Mullery became Brighton’s manager in the summer of 1976. Following two draws there was a second replay at Stamford Bridge on Monday 6th December where, in a contentious encounter, Palace were victorious by the one goal. After the game Brighton manager Mullery vented his anger by making an obscene gesture to the Palace fans and intimated they were worthless by throwing five one pound notes on the floor.

The Youth Cup is a historic competition and, from the squad to the staff across the Academy set-up, it’s something everybody is keenly looking forward to. This season will be my fourth cup with the Under-18s and we’ve faced some tough challenges in that time. As a coach, I look forward to seeing the lads pushing hard to earn a place in the starting XI against Reading. Under the lights of Madejski Stadium against Category 1 opposition, the team will be in for quite the challenge. We will approach the game with confidence and excitement, knowing full well that on our day we can end it as victors. You can’t plan your route with this competition, but with the right attitude, the lads can aim to progress with every knockout game. Turning my attention to our recent league results, we’ve had a mixed bag - collecting four points from four fixtures over the last four weeks. The first of these matches was a 5-0 win against Queens Park Rangers.

It was an excellent performance, with the defence looking solid and the attack looking creative and ruthless in front of goal. After that game, I felt our style of play had really come together. Then, after such a positive display, we suffered a disappointing loss against Millwall in driving rain where we fell to a freak goal within 90 seconds of kick-off. I wasn’t happy with the Millwall loss and neither were the boys. I questioned them after full-time because their performance fell short of expectations and they went on to respond in a really pleasing fashion against Charlton the following week. In essence, Charlton posed a similar challenge to Millwall: a south London side fielding a diamond midfield. We held them to a 1-1 draw. The staff demand consistency from the lads at this age because it’s something they’ll have to develop for both Under-23 and first-team football. But that’s not always achievable and

we lost, deservedly, to Bristol City last week. Yesterday, after this column had been printed, we will have faced Watford in another really testing fixture. Watford are flying high at the moment but, having questioned the lads after the Bristol defeat, I am confident we can respond in the same manner we did against Charlton after losing to Millwall. Writing this on a Tuesday evening after seeing the last two days of training, I am confident I will see a strong reaction to the performance against Bristol City. Ending on a very positive note, I’d like to express my pride in the boys who have played internationally over the last two weeks. Tayo Adaramola, Fionn Mooney and Aidan Steele have been with Ireland recently and Joe Whitworth and Jadan Raymond have developed with England. It’s a fantastic reflection of our Academy and I am very proud of how the lads are faring.

The Under-18s have been drawn to face Reading in the FA Youth Cup on December 12th. It’s a massive occasion for the lads and will motivate them over their forthcoming league fixtures.

The club handing out free autograph books was a nice touch, and a great way to promote the FA’s Women’s Football Weekend We are often asked to sign things post-match from pictures to shirts, but having that book to bring along to games is great. To have just one kid come back to us in a few games time with the autograph book, because they missed us on the Women’s Football Weekend, would be everything. That’s half the fight, trying to get people to come in the door and then keeping them there. If they’re coming back it means you’re having a positive impact on them. On the game against the London City Lionesses itself, I sent a message to our team WhatsApp group chat after full-time and said just how proud of us I was. The Lionesses are a fulltime club, something every side in our league aspire to be.

When you have a game against a side like London City, it’s a match where you really have to come together and win your individual battles. And that’s what we did, which shows our great progress in a short space of time from where Palace finished last season to now. With us taking the lead though, it shows we need to work a little bit on our game management as we really should’ve taken something from that game. It was gutting to concede that late winner, especially given the work rate we had all put in. Obviously, I was delighted to score my third of the season; goalscoring has always been a part of my game and I’d be disappointed to not be around Palace’s top goalscorers this season. However – and just because this is clichéd, doesn’t make it any less true – I would’ve much rather not scored and us have achieved the three points.

I captained the side against London City because Freya Holdaway and Ashlee Hincks were both out injured. It was unexpected on two fronts, firstly to have both players out injured but also because I’m new to the club, so I wasn’t expecting the honour of leading the team out. However, it’s a role I’ve had regularly throughout my career having captained my university team and my former club, London Bees. Tomorrow’s game against Blackburn Rovers is one we will be wanting to make up for missing out on any points last weekend - that gutted feeling isn’t one we want to experience again. It won’t be easy though, as Blackburn are a newly promoted team this season, and the promoted sides we’ve faced so far have all played with the desire to showcase they deserve to be in this league.

It was great to see how successful the Women’s Football Weekend was. We knew we had a lot of schoolchildren coming down, but I don’t think any of the players comprehended just how many there would be and the excitement levels that they all brought. It was awesome.
