ROY HODGSON
After the international break, it is good to return to Premier League football and we have been fortunate, this time, to have had an extended period in which to savour the excellent win away at West Ham two weeks ago. However, a visit from last season’s champions will severely test our mettle and I am very fortunate that the players who have been on international duty have arrived back, fit and ready for this exciting challenge. The international fixtures and results have been overshadowed in England by the appalling racist behaviour encountered in the last game in Bulgaria and it is understandable that this topic has dominated the recent headlines. I am full of admiration for the manner in which the England players handled the situation and for the dignity they showed in the
face of such nationalistic fervour and racist abuse. Raheem Sterling knows better than anyone how abuse can affect form and well-being and his stance has shed a beacon of light on this disgraceful human trait and must surely have made many culprits take a long, hard look at themselves. I congratulate him and his fellow black English players for the work they do in trying to eradicate this blot on society. We are also proud to be supporting the Premier League’s ‘No Room for Racism’ campaign today, which uses the power and popularity of the league to oppose racism in football and show commitment to equality and diversity. Never can a campaign of this nature have been more timely. Anyway, back to today’s game. I have been pleased with our recent form here at Selhurst
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
Park and knowing we can count on you, our fans, to be the ‘twelfth man’ for us is very reassuring. We face a run of games now against teams with high aspirations and loads of quality. We shall have to work extremely hard, accept that we do not have a lot of ball possession and use the skill set which we have to make life difficult for our opponents and to give ourselves the best chance of getting a result. Every Palace fan will have dined out on last season’s incredible away victory against today’s opponents and Andros Townsend’s goal is already the stuff of which legends are made. We know how hard we have had to work and fight for those precious moments and I am hoping that, with your support, we can cause another upset here at home today. Enjoy the game!

A warm welcome to Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City team here today, as well, of course, to all of our own Crystal Palace fans.

This squad has always had the capabilities of being a secure top-half Premier League team and although the journey is far from done, the start to this campaign has been one that the fans deserved and one that the players and management have worked hard for. The Norwich City game was the last time we were together at Selhurst Park, and it was great to continue our unbeaten home form in the league. The three points were deserved, and it was pleasing to right the wrongs of the Wolves game by being on the right side of a late goal. Of course, I was pleased to start my goal tally for the season. But Andros’ goal was more pleasing for me. To see Wilf’s strength, skill and desire to set him up, and for him to then score one of his trademark goals, was just what we needed. Having plenty of options in front of goal from our creative forward players will be
important in keeping up our good start. Missing the West Ham game due to suspension was difficult. I want to help my team at all times, in whatever way I can but this situation is part of football. It happens and I move on from it. I knew that there would be no issues in my absence. We have faith in every player in our squad. Gary as captain, a player with his achievements and leader of the national team and Chelsea, meant he was always going to lead by example. I had a feeling a penalty would be awarded in my absence – football is funny like that. We all knew Patrick was next in line to step up and we had a good discussion in training in the build-up to West Ham about the situation happening. What a cool penalty that was in a big moment for us in the game. James came into the team for his first league start for Palace and
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
his performance was no surprise to me or the team. The positive things he brought to the game are what he has shown since his arrival in training. When you see someone like James come in and put in that type of performance you understand the strength of our whole squad. I’m delighted to be back available for today’s game against Manchester City. We know they’re perhaps in a moment that is not what they’re used to. And that is why we must be fully focused today as we saw what happened to Watford after Man City lost to Norwich. They have their qualities, we understand that. But we’ve been successful against them in recent times, so we know our own strengths and what today’s game requires from us. For this to all come together though, we require the usual passionate Selhurst atmosphere. Make some noise!

Before this round of Premier League fixtures, we sit in the top six of sides in England. I know I always say it is too early to be looking at the league table – and it is – but I can’t deny the pride I feel in seeing that.

Roy, the coaching staff, and the players have hit the ground running this season and I think we are fully deserving of our league position. Fourteen points from eight is a fantastic return, and we’re justifiably receiving a lot of positive coverage and plaudits, so let’s enjoy it whilst in the moment. Rest assured no-one here is getting carried away – there are 30 games left, and our next five are against those above us. In recent seasons, we’ve competed well against the top-half sides – but I can assure you we take nothing for granted and I know you will be with us every step of the way come thick or thin. I’m sure you’ve all observed the immense team spirit and fantastic support in recent games, especially during the celebrations after the late winner at West Ham. It’s those moments that make it all worth it. Yet again Jordan was there to pounce and VAR proved he had positioned himself perfectly to take the chance.
It was a brilliant team effort, and a fitting way for the ultimate team-man Joel Ward to celebrate his 200th league game for Palace. Joel epitomises this club. He never, ever gives less than 100%, and does whatever is asked of him in the most professional manner. For those of you who watch Palace TV it seems he’s not a bad cricketer either! Last Saturday, I joined Eddie Izzard, Kevin Day and around 130 others on the Palace for Life Foundation’s Marathon March in torrential conditions. The work the Foundation undertake in our community is outstanding. We all know the challenges facing everyone in London but particularly young people. They are on the frontline of some of the most pressing issues and the money raised makes a real and tangible difference. I spent a lot of time speaking to Angel who runs the ‘Stepping Stones’ programme, where she helps
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
young people at risk of becoming involved with drugs and crime take a different path in life. We also run Divert, where our coaches meet first offenders in custody centres and work to divert them away from crime. Thanks finally to the walkers especially Angie and Stefan who kept me company and to all those that donated - if you haven’t yet, there’s still time. I also attended the premiere of a new film called Team of the Eighties at Boxpark, with several Palace players from the 1970s and hundreds of fans from that era too. It was made by former Palace TV producer Alan Ryan, charting the rollercoaster ride of that period under Malcolm Allison and Terry Venables. It’s amazing to look back at the club in those days – it was such an exciting time to be a fan. It airs on BT Sport on 27 October – don’t miss it! Enjoy the game today – playing the champions under the Selhurst lights… this is what it’s all about!
09
Welcome to everyone associated with Manchester City to Selhurst Park today – supporters, staff, players and directors alike. Also welcome as always to each and every Palace fan here today for what promises to be a magnificent occasion against the champions.

JAMES
After a year-and-a-half sidelined by a broken leg, James McCarthy began a new chapter by signing for Palace this summer. Here, he talks with Ben Mountain about Celtic, the struggles of making it in football and how his family have helped him along the way.

12 CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
Talking quietly over the distant din of the kitman’s jet washer, James McCarthy cuts every bit the calm and laid-back figure. It’s hard to imagine him supporting one of Europe’s most passionate clubs in one of the continent’s hottest rivalries. But the Palace summer signing’s love of Celtic is an indelible part of his identity. When a County Donegal-born Irishman, Paddy, migrated to Glasgow in the middle of the 20th Century, McCarthy’s Hoops-following roots would be planted. As many Catholic Irishmen did having navigated the Irish Sea, Paddy adopted Celtic as his team of choice and so the McCarthy clan were ascribed their colours for the next two generations. With the birth of his grandson many years later, Paddy would watch as a young James McCarthy enjoyed the perfectly conditioned upbringing to develop a football obsession. Playing with friends, cousins, brothers and neighbours on the pitch which adjoined his house in Castlemilk, Glasgow, McCarthy’s earliest memories are clouded by the green of his grandfather’s Celtic and the white ball of Mitre’s preNike headache in technicolour. “I always had a ball,” he says, looking back on a brief childhood geared towards footballing success. “It was a close group, a close family. Just together and we always had everyone about.
“Early football for me was always playing as a kid. I’ve always been a Celtic fan; all my family are Celtic fans. From when I was born, I’ve had the Celtic strips. Obviously as a kid, you’re always watching. We’d go and watch the games, my brothers used to take me.”
“ WE’VE GOT GOOD FANS HERE AND THE NOISE AT HOME IS VERY GOOD. IT’S IMPORTANT AND THE FANS TRAVEL WELL FOR AWAY DAYS ”
On a Sunday evening in spring, 1999, with McCarthy just old enough to adorn the terraces of Parkhead, the Old Firm derby experienced one of its grittiest matches. With Celtic Park newly redeveloped to become the thenbiggest club stadium in Britain,
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
historic rivals Rangers made the four-mile journey through south Glasgow on the cusp of winning the Scottish Premier League. The ensuing game saw referee Hugh Dallas struck by a fan’s missile, confronted by pitch invaders and the entire Old Firm event reorganised to minimise violence amongst crowds. Naturally, it is a clash which has gone down in Old Firm lore. For McCarthy, though, the intensity and emotion of Scotland’s highest-profile fixture was an exciting spectacle, something he today sees reflected in the passion and volume of Selhurst Park. “I went to quite a lot of them [Old Firm derbies]. I was younger, maybe eight or nine. I’d always be at the games. “It’s an amazing atmosphere, an incredible atmosphere and one that you really enjoy. You always find you want to play in something like that. We’ve got good fans here [at Palace] and the noise at home is very good. It’s important and the fans travel well for away days.” When football transitioned seriously from the local pitches and terraces to a career path and professional sport, McCarthy was faced with a seminal life choice: which country to pledge his international allegiance. The youngest player in the 21st Century to represent Hamilton

Academical, McCarthy was eligible to represent his grandfather’s Ireland or his own native Scotland. But after Scotland overlooked his ability and Ireland handed him regular chances at varying youth levels, McCarthy was sold. Ireland it was. “We watched Ireland,” he reflects. “We watched the odd Scotland game but we watched Ireland. My grandad was Irish so I always watched the games and our family had Ireland tops. “Scotland came to watch me, didn’t pick me a good few times and then Ireland came over, watched me once and put me in the squad. “Scotland came back and said: ‘We want you to come.’ At the time, I was happy with my choice and Scotland had the chance when I was younger. I’m happy with the way it’s gone with Ireland, with the Euros.” Making his full international debut in February 2010, McCarthy was backed by a large and ever-supportive family. One man, however, was missing. “Obviously my grandad was a big influence,” McCarthy says. “Unfortunately he passed away just before my [Ireland] debut. He was a major part of the family and I was gutted. He’d have loved to see me play for Ireland but unfortunately it didn’t happen. “He’s up there watching down. He obviously went up and did a few
tricks for me to make sure I played for Ireland.” In the years without his grandfather’s inspiration, however, McCarthy still had the support of those around him and - though it is a clichéd and too easy portrayal the 28-year-old truly is a family man.
“ I WAS THINKING: ‘I DON’T KNOW IF I WANT TO DO THIS.’ PEOPLE SAID TO ME: ‘YOU NEED TO GO. IT’S THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE. IT’S A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY’ ”
A determining factor in the midfielder’s career, and a recurring topic throughout this interview, McCarthy was keen to stay close with his family from a young age. Turning down a move to Liverpool at 16 and opting instead for Wigan Athletic two years later, the
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
teenage prodigy was swayed in part by the Latics’ proximity to Glasgow. “I moved to Wigan when I was 18. My family were always up and down so that helped me. It was obviously a big move and at the time I was thinking: ‘I don’t know if I want to do this.’ “People said to me: ‘You need to go. It’s the English Premier League. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.’ It was a big move and it was a difficult move away from everyone. “I enjoyed my time there, really enjoyed it. I loved it, every minute.” Twelve years, an FA Cup trophy, Europa League and Euro 2016 appearances later and McCarthy would find himself well established further south, now with Everton. After three seasons of regular football and two plagued by injury, the Scotsman was hospitalised in Liverpool having suffered a double break in his right leg whilst playing against West Bromwich Albion. Following two operations, the injury would stop him from walking and forced the midfielder to put his career on hold. “I went to block the shot and he [Salomon Rondon] has kicked the back of my leg,” McCarthy recalls. “It’s part and parcel of football. When it happened, I knew straight away it had happened. I looked down and saw it obviously. I knew the feeling, it was a weird feeling.” Coming round to an apologetic text from Rondon, McCarthy faced a

year-and-a-half in recovery; a battle to return to full fitness and the Premier League. “All the family were down at the time [of the injury]. My missus was there, they were all down to watch the game.
“ IT’S A LONG ROAD, IT’S A DARK ROAD AT TIMES BUT AFTER A WHILE YOU START TO SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL ”
“It was a tough period but all my family got me through it. They were brilliant for me: my missus and the family and close friends like Seamus Coleman who obviously had a similar injury. “I had to be more careful and couldn’t put much weight on it for a while and then eventually I started
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
walking. At first it felt weird, walking. It’s a long road, it’s a dark road at times but after a while you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. “I’ve got a good family. I’ve got my missus about me and I’ve got a wee boy now at seven months. Obviously at times when you come back from training and you go home to him, it’s changed a lot in the seven months. He’s amazing; special to me and to everyone in my family. I’ve got good people about me.” Today, with Crystal Palace, McCarthy is back playing football and earned his first top-flight start since January 2018 in the Eagles’ comeback against West Ham United. Other than seeing it as “a bit different,” McCarthy is welcoming life in London - 430 miles away from his hometown in Glasgow. “I’ve been enjoying it,” he says. “The boys have been amazing with me, the staff, everybody has been brilliant. It’s a real family club and I feel as if I’m enjoying it.” From leaving home when most haven’t left school to playing his international debut without the man who inspired him there, McCarthy’s journey into football and down to London hasn’t been an easy one. But he has his family and his passion for football. From the pitch by his house to the Premier League turf, McCarthy has enjoyed quite the rise. “I’m looking forward to keeping going,” he says

Over a week ago, we had two England cricketers join in with firstteam training at Copers Cope. It’s as good an excuse as any, so let’s see how many cricket terms I can throw into this article. Two so far... Kent’s star batsmen Joe Denly and Sam Billings bowled into Beckenham on a sunny October day to try their hand (and feet) at football. With a Kent Cricket Ground and training centre just through the gate at the back of our pitches, it was about time we broke down boundaries and linked up with our friends next door. Both Sam and Joe were silly with excitement when they arrived, as the initial plan for them to just watch training had spun into both being chucked a pair of football boots. Sam, however, stuck with the boots he’d bounced in with,
hoping they’d give him the edge. As a youngster, Joe played for Charlton Athletic’s Academy and Sam – a real ‘mate from home who was good at football’ – had trials with Spurs. Haven’t we all? The pair were told they were only joining in for the rondo (piggy in the middle) game before training properly starts, but this was actually a test to see what their touch was
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
like. In the end, it was a test they knocked out of the ground, earning a call-up to the main session. Dave Reddington and Ray Lewington ran passing drills in groups of fours and sixes before the coaching trinity’s third man – Roy Hodgson – swung into action. Denly and Billings didn’t duck the challenge of feeding balls out wide and after what must
have been a century of attacking moves, the manager deemed the players in good enough nick to end the training session. Okay, it wasn’t a bad innings, but I’m stumped for cricket terms now. Alas, like my puns, the football had finished, and so we headed next door for some red ball action. This started with Ashes batsman Denly padding up and facing 80mph balls fed into the bowling machine by Roy. It was incredible to watch Joe bat. The athletes around me all said that in both cricket and football it’s the awareness of surroundings and reaction speed that sets the elite apart from the rest. Next to pad-up was Joel Ward, who hadn’t played cricket since leaving school. After missing
quite a few balls, Sam told him to ‘try and smash them’ and this is when the fireworks began. I think Joel then hit every ball and even came close to knocking out both myself and Mr Hodgson. Like the coward I am, I hid behind the net from then on. Moving on… VAR is great, isn’t it? What an end to the game at the athletics stadium. Back in SE25, we actually have a new addition to our stadium output. We recently asked Palace fan Ben Bailey Smith (a.k.a. Doc Brown) to record all the announcements you’ll hear at Selhurst Park as a VAR check is being made. Hopefully he’ll have some good news to shout through the speakers today! Finally, well done to all my
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
fellow marathon marchers who trudged through the rain last week to raise money for the Palace for Life Foundation. It was tough chasing after Steve ‘Kipchoge’ Parish, who only slowed down to tell me the mushrooms on toast I was about to eat wasn’t vegan.

Palace have won 44 points in 2019. Only City (67), Liverpool (67) and Arsenal (47) have picked up more in the Premier League this year.
FROM THE DUGOUT
“I HAD A FEELING [AGAINST WOLVES] WOULD BE THE DAY WE CREATED LESS. WE HAVE FACED MANY TEAMS DEFENDING DEEP AND WE FOUND A WAY BUT TODAY WE HAD A PROBLEM.”
Hosting Manchester City is no small task for any side in the Premier League, but Crystal Palace will be playing today with an air of confidence – buoyed by their recent results and stand-out victory at the Etihad last December. On paper, Pep Guardiola’s titlewinning squad will be favourites in today’s – indeed, most days’ – clash. However, Palace can take faith not only from their own form, but the relative inconsistency of their visitors this evening, too. The south Londoners have lost only two of their last 12 matches in the top-flight (W7 D3 L2), with neither of those defeats coming at Selhurst Park. In fact, the Eagles are unbeaten in their last six home league games, winning three and drawing three since a 1-3 defeat to City in April.
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
Alarmingly, the Citizens have won 10 of their last 11 away games in the Premier League. The only stain on that otherwise faultless record came against newly-promoted Norwich City, who join Wolverhampton Wanderers as surprise victors against the Sky Blues this season. Naturally, upsets such as these will inspire fond memories of the Eagles’ 2-3 victory over City last year, the hosts’ only home defeat of the league season. In addition, the record of the two clubs’ leading frontmen makes for kind reading for Palace fans, with Jordan Ayew directly winning the Eagles six points with his three goals and Sergio Agüero not having scored in SE25 on six occasions. Only at Anfield has he suffered more goalless matches.
19.10.2019
Manchester City have scored 89 of their 107 penalties in the Premier League, giving them a success rate of 83%.

ORCHESTRATOR: RODRI 40
No outfield player has played more minutes in the Premier League for Manchester City than their summer signing from Atletico Madrid. Deemed the heir to Fernandinho’s throne as the defensive shield, Pep Guardiola has brought Rodri in to keep the defensive-midfield role a consistent one, whilst tinkering in other positions. Given Rodri's role, it isn’t a surprise that no other teammate in this City squad has made more tackles that the Spaniard’s 20. However, at 556 completed passes, it is perhaps more of a shock that Rodri tops the passing charts for Guardiola’s side, too.
Jordan Ayew will therefore have an important role to play, and one similar to what he was tasked with against Paul Pogba in our historic win at Old Trafford in August. Ayew will have to drop deep to track Rodri, ensuring he cannot spread passes around the field to City’s attacking threats such as David and Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling. There’s a chance Kevin De Bruyne will miss today’s game against the Eagles through injury, therefore Guardiola’s side would be lacking a player who provides a team-high minimum of four key passes per league game. It’s important to note that if De Bruyne doesn’t play against the Eagles, City will have also lost their only real threat with long balls. Of De Bruyne’s 29 key passes, six of them have been long, with only Oleksandr Zinchenko and İlkay Gündoğan having more than one long key pass (two each). In the Belgian’s absence,

RIGHT SIDE
Whether at home or away from the Etihad, Manchester City’s style of play barely changes – the only slight change is a 2% increase in attacks down the middle, with the decrease coming from the right-hand side of the pitch. With 42% of attacks coming down the left-hand side, no matter if home or away, Sterling is reaping the rewards - the winger
finds himself in the top five Premier League goalscorers. Therefore, Joel Ward will require support from either the right-sided central midfielder or right-sided winger that Roy Hodgson opts for today, to cope with Sterling and the supporting full-back in Zinchenko, Benjamin Mendy or João Cancelo.

The record number of points ever reached in the Premier League; a tally City clocked up in the 2017/18 season thanks to a last-minute Gabriel Jesus goal at Southampton, thereby winning the league over rivals United by an incredible 19 points.

The Citizens are only the second ever club who have won a European trophy and also been relegated to their country’s third tier. This remarkable fact, following City's relegation to League One in 1998, had only previously applied to German side 1 FC Magdeburg.

HISTORY Something that our two clubs share in common is that we were both founded in 1905. However, we didn’t meet Chelsea in the league until the 1924/1925 season when both clubs were in the Second Division. Our first ever visit to Stamford Bridge was in September 1924 and that finished 2-2. We then had to wait another 45 years, until we finally reached Division One, before we went there again - that was another draw (1-1) with Roger Hoy scoring for us and Peter Osgood for them. We won our first league game at Chelsea in 1982, when they popped down to see us in Division Two. Our first win there in the top-flight was not to come until August 2015 in that fabulous match where Damo marked Costa out of
the game - our winner came from Joel Ward (of all people!) with 10 minutes to go. MEMORABLE MATCH For me, there’s only one contender for this: it was a cold winter’s day in February 1976, and Palace were a Third Division team playing First Division Chelsea in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. I remember it vividly. The atmosphere was electric and I don’t recall any segregation in the huge crowd of 54,000. There was certainly a fair bit of ‘bovver’ as we called it in those days. Palace won 3-2 thanks to a Man of the Match performance from the brilliant Peter Taylor; he made the first goal, scored the second and then grabbed the winner with a 20-yard free kick. Big Mal smoked a cigar and
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
wore his fedora and the Palace team wore the white strip with a diagonal sash for the first time. One of my favourite away games ever! TRAVEL This is match number four of our four consecutive away games in London and the easiest journey of all. Traditionally, we’ve tended to go to Chelsea by train to Victoria and then jumped on a District Line tube to Fulham Broadway. Nowadays though, I find the easiest route is to take the Overground from Clapham Junction to West Brompton (or Imperial Wharf) and it’s then a short walk to the ground. PUBS AND BEER There are no micro-breweries near the stadium, although Sambrooks is just over the river in Battersea. They
won’t be for much longer though, as they will soon be moving to the site of the old Youngs brewery in Wandsworth. However, there is a huge choice of pubs to drink in before or, in the case of this 12:30pm kick-off, after the game. Chelsea, Fulham and Earl’s Court have plenty to choose from and there’s even London’s only pub with a Michelin star – The Harwood Arms – just off the North End Road. My own favourite is The White Horse on Parsons Green which has, without a doubt, one of London’s finest beer selections. There’s usually at least 20 cask and craft ales on offer with cult names like Roosters, Oakham, Magic Rock and Tiny Rebel often present.
PLAYED FOR BOTH CLUBS The recent arrival of Gary Cahill (what a great signing that has been) got me thinking about other Chelsea players who have moved to Palace. When I was a boy we had Paddy Mulligan, Bobby Tambling, Charlie Cooke and Alan Birchenall. Later on we signed two players from the Blues who would go on to score crucial play-off final winners for us: David Hopkin and Neil Shipperley. Less successful was one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players, the late Ray Wilkins, who signed for Palace in 1994 but broke his foot on his debut and never played for us again. FAMOUS CHELSEA FANS There’s plenty to choose from, but I’m going to pick out Woody and Suggs from Madness who are regulars at Stamford Bridge and are often at Selhurst Park when we play the Blues at home.

Upper Norwood Library Hub is just as you’d expect it to be: literature from The Gruffalo to George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and the almost silent hum of computers being used by the general public. There’s also the sound of a ukulele coming from one corner. That’s because the Upper Norwood Library Hub, in the heart of Crystal Palace high street, is home to what is quickly becoming the local community’s best friend: Library of Things. Originally setup in the library at West Norwood back in 2014, Library of Things has now found its home amongst the hustle and bustle of Crystal Palace. The idea for it stems from the core foundations of any good community: one that is united in helping out its residents. And that is the reason why Upper Norwood Library Hub, Crystal Palace Transition Town and Library of Things worked
together to bring it to its new home. With 70 items from, yes, a ukulele, to the forever-in-use carpet cleaner, Library of Things gives its residents the option to hire a wide range of products that are either unaffordable to buy or quite simply not needed on a regular basis. Alys Penfold, Community Manager for Library of Things, explains: “The motivation behind Library of Things is that space in London is at a premium, people don’t have room to store things like carpet cleaners. Furthermore, we are massively motivated by doing right by the environment and we want to help in anyway we can, no matter how small. There’s no need for everyone to own power tools; a drill is used for a total of 13 minutes on average in its lifetime.” Since its opening in Crystal Palace, over 1,700 customers have hired a total of 2,000+ items and the majority of those customers
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
live within a two-mile radius. However, such is the uniqueness and value for money of the service offered by Library of Things, Alys remarked that one customer travelled from Islington to hire a steam cleaner because, despite the distance, it was cheaper than hiring from places closer to home. The Library really does ensure its customers are well-served, from including the tablets for the carpet cleaner in the price you pay to hire it, to putting together ‘How To’ guides and videos for all the products. However, perhaps the most refreshing step is the one of the ‘thing fixers’ – volunteers who come in every Monday to service all the products to ensure they’re fit for purpose. Library of Things ticks so many boxes for so many people: location, ease of use, sustainability, high-end quality, reliability and, of course, value for money.

Items are charged below 10% of the price it would be to buy them outright from new. And the items available are ones selected by the community themselves, with Library of Things running regular polls to determine what their local residents would like to access. Available items are bought brand new, too, with Alys joking that Library of Things have lost count of the various types of carpet cleaners they’ve tested to find the best one for their customers. Like so many community-first projects, Library of Things would be nothing without their loyal volunteers. Alys cannot thank the current team of 45 enough, with their roles varying from holding ‘repair parties’ for your broken computer, to being an on-site host or working as an ambassador who helps to spread the word. The single site in Crystal Palace is clearly just the start, with current customers making such requests as a Library of Things that is open 24/7. And there’s interest coming from as far as Australia, Zimbabwe and Bangkok with communities interested in finding out how they can start up their own Library of Things. South London’s best-kept secret is no more. Oh, and we promise to return the Nintendo 64 at some point next week.

An established top-flight strike partnership graced Selhurst Park towards the end of October 1989 but, much to the locals’ chagrin, they were wearing Millwall’s colours. Tony Cascarino and Teddy Sheringham were in a second campaign at this level and their reputations preceded them. Crystal Palace had pinned hopes on their own pairing of Ian Wright and Mark Bright thriving in the elite but, up to then, they had clicked only in flashes. That was all to change that autumn afternoon. Wright and Bright were the strike force with the potential to set Palace apart at the higher level. Steve Coppell had sold the vision to Bright in an initial meeting at Watford Gap services while attempting to persuade him to swap Leicester City reserves for an emerging team in the Second Division. “He told me Palace had a young striker from non league football, the most enthusiastic player he’d ever seen,” recalled Bright. “He just needed guidance.” Wright was raw. He had been rejected by Brighton as a teenager and, with a young family to support, had initially been reluctant to give up a well-paid job at Tunnel Refineries. The
doubts persisted through a difficult first year on the books, and it was only when Bright joined that things took off. Geoff Thomas described the rookie as “a Duracell bunny,” but Bright calmed him down. The pair roomed at away games and clicked off the pitch, even if the self-styled ‘team within the team’ did not gel immediately on the field. They managed 16 goals in the second-tier between them in what remained of the 1986/87 campaign. “We were coming back from Swindon at the end of that season and knew we had to do better,” said Bright. “Ian Evans, the coach, got me flicking it on and Ian getting in behind, and Ian Branfoot and Stan Ternent just drilled us. People say there was a telepathy, but that was down to hard work.” The rewards were plain to see: 45 goals in their first full league season in tandem, then 44 to gain promotion in 1988/89. “When we went up, the first thing that went through my mind was: ‘Am I going to be good enough to play in that league?’” said Wright. “But I knew Brighty was going to be there, and that we’d still get chances.” Bright, in particular, had been
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
unfortunate through the first few months of the top-flight return and, while Wright had already found the net four times in the league, the older half was still scoreless by late October. His frustrations were taken out on Millwall. The south London derby was broadcast abroad with the global audience granted a glimpse of the frenetic majesty of the English game. Jeff Hopkins’ freakish own goal had gifted the visitors a lead but, with Millwall sliced apart by Palace’s rapid counter-attacking, it was short-lived. Wright equalised after John Pemberton’s rapid break from a Millwall corner, then forced the hosts ahead with a shot on the swivel from Thomas’ header. Bright would turn Eddie McGoldrick’s cut back into an empty net to break his duck. Though, having been pegged back to parity, it was the team’s fourth which summed up the partnership’s threat. Wright span away from Keith Stevens and tore at pace into enemy territory to square beyond Ian Dawes. There, on the edge of the area, was Bright, who ripped a glorious winner high beyond Brian Horne. Millwall were broken. The partnership had arrived in the big-time.

PALACE FOR LIFE
Comedian and actor Eddie Izzard joined 130 Crystal Palace fans for a marathon-length walk to raise funds for the Palace for Life Foundation’s community work last Saturday. Izzard, a Foundation patron, was at a soaking Selhurst Park bright and early to officially start the Marathon March, powered by Utilita, joining Eagles fans as they headed through Thornton Heath and Mitcham towards Wimbledon Common. He said: “Walking a marathon is a joy for me! It’s great to be here. It’s all about helping young people in south London and mental health is our focus this year. I had a gig in Oxford last night and I have a gig in Plymouth tonight, but it’s all worth it to be here.” Also in attendance was Palace Chairman Steve Parish, who walked in support of the Foundation’s
work. The route continued through Richmond Park, passing Fulham’s Craven Cottage and Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge before ending up in central London. Parish said: “The Marathon March is a great event that helps to highlight the amazing work the Foundation are doing out in the community to confront some of the problems we have in south London, like knife crime and youth violence. They use the power of the Palace badge to show young people that there is a different path.” More than £56,000 has been raised so far, with some of the funding going towards the Foundation’s Team Mates mental health programme for primary schools. The oldest walker was 80-year-old Maurice Clark and the youngest was Charlie, aged nine.
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
Charlie started at the halfway point to join his father, Pete, and their dog, Archie. Charlie said: “I decided to do it because I feel very lucky and wanted to help the children in south London who aren’t as lucky as me. I want to do the full 26.2 miles next year and raise even more money.” Also amongst the walkers were Palace legends Mark Bright and Andy Gray, with both undertaking the Marathon March for the second year running. Sitting down in the Academy’s canteen, goalkeeper Dion-Curtis Henry talked through two huge days in his brief but eventful career so far.
19.10.2019
58
Aged just 17, Dion-Curtis Henry wasn’t old enough to vote as he warmed up in the chilled, autumnal air back in 2015. His club, Peterborough United, were facing Millwall at London Road and were 2-0 up when a 50p coin struck him on the shin. ‘Oi,’ a guilty eight-year-old called out over the hoardings. Smiling, a 17-year-old Henry picked the coin up, stuck it inside his sock and added it to the “car park fund” later that evening, going on to fill a meter thanks to the improvised missile. With the confidence of youth and the protection of a first-choice ‘keeper - Ben Alnwick - assuredly guarding the net with Henry safe on the bench, the teenager engaged the crowd, nonchalantly dismissing their jeers. Amidst the interaction between fan and player, the linesman approached Henry with instructions to sit back down. Under orders, he turned around and, looking up, saw Alnwick lying on the turf, down and out for the game’s remaining hour. “I thought: ‘This could not get any worse,” the now 22-year-old recalls, “‘I’ve just given some Millwall fans stick and I’m about to go on the pitch.’” Donning his gloves and seeing out the first-half untroubled, Henry eventually conceded the opening three goals of his Football League career.
“YOU COULD FEEL IT IN THE DRESSING ROOM. EVERYONE WAS LOOKING AT EACH OTHER, THINKING: ‘WE’RE GOING TO WIN THIS GAME’”
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
Millwall’s fans sought their reprisal and up went the chant: ‘Henry, what’s the score? Henry, Henry, what’s the score?’ The taunt wasn’t to matter by full-time, though, with The Posh going on to win 5-3, its home fanbase goading the visitors by backing their teenage shot stopper. Driving home that evening only just old enough for a licence - Henry had enjoyed quite the baptism of fire. But at least he could afford a parking ticket. Fast-forwarding three years - after loan spells with Soham Town Rangers and Boston United - Henry would find himself on another bench, this time safe from coins, as a back-up ‘keeper for Wales international and Eagles first-choice, Wayne Hennessey. Having joined Crystal Palace just two months before, the young glovesman was called into action with Julian Speroni sidelined by injury. The task before him was remarkable, posing a far greater challenge than even the most fearsome coin-wielding eightyear-old could manage. Palace had just appointed manager Roy Hodgson and held the record of seven games played, no points earned and no goals scored. Their visitors for the afternoon’s match? Chelsea, the Premier League champions.
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
“I came in and normally three ‘keepers go in for a game,” Henry explains. “I walked in to the changing room and saw Wayne’s top at the side and looked to the sub’s space on the bench. The shirt said ‘Henry 30’ on the back. I went: ‘Okay, where’s Jules’ top?’ I sat down and the gaffer said the team and said my name on the bench. “The goalie coach pulled me aside and explained that Jules was injured and that I’d done well with them recently so I was on the bench. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. “But there was that feeling before the game. Everyone, including the bench and staff, felt on it. You could feel it in the dressing room. Everyone was looking at each other, thinking: ‘We’re going to win this game.’ “When we won it was insane. Everyone was happy, jumping in the changing room, and I thought: ‘I’m glad to be a part of this.’ Afterwards my phone was buzzing off, Dad was calling me saying: ‘I didn’t know you were going on the bench.’ I didn’t know either!” From carrying the weight of a Football League debut and the anger of Millwall’s braying hoard to making a Premier League bench in one of Palace’s most seminal matches, Henry has had quite the start to his fledgling career. You can’t help but wonder what’s next.

HARRY WEIR’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING TODAY’S MASCOT Today, Crystal Palace Football Club are delighted to welcome Harry Weir and his family to Selhurst Park. Harry was diagnosed at the age of three with Chronic Kidney Condition, for which there is no cure. At the age of five, Harry’s kidney function steeply declined and he underwent chemotherapy, which was a last attempt to save his kidneys. Unfortunately, this did not work and in January 2017 Harry was admitted to hospital with kidney failure.
Harry started peritoneal dialysis at home and he was therefore fitted with a six-inch tube. He ended up having dialysis for two years, which ran for 10 hours overnight, every night, whilst waiting for a suitable kidney donor. In March 2019, Harry received his kidney transplant. His dad, Mike, was not a direct match for Harry, therefore he donated one of his kidneys to somebody else in need, so that Harry could receive his new kidney via a sharing scheme. The transplant has given Harry the chance to live without pain and
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
suffering and to live life as a child should. Harry and his family are now busy making lots of memories, like today where Harry and his brother are team mascots. As well as being a lifelong Palace fan, Mike is now a strong supporter for organ donation and hopes that by sharing Harry’s story more people will register as an organ donor, reducing the waiting times for those in desperate need of a transplant. Visit www.organdonation. nhs.uk to find out how you can register to become a donor.

PALACEXI IN TIME By Ian King
THE 90 MINUTES Having survived Scarborough’s opening flurry, the Eagles had the ball in the net after 20 minutes but this was ruled out for pushing. Things got worse for Palace when minutes later, Phil Holder had to be taken off through injury and replaced by Alan Whittle. Just before half-time, Palace did score a legal goal, when Jim Cannon made a foray from left-back and sent in a low cross that Peter Taylor connected
with and his shot ended up in the net via a deflection. Midway through the secondhalf Scarborough produced a headed equaliser. However, ten minutes from time, a move that involved 11 passes – which had manager Allison purring afterwards - ended with Peter Wall sending in a cross that Ian Evans headed home. THAT FEDORA Sitting in the stand on the Yorkshire coast Allison found the bright winter sun was shining straight in his eyes so he obtained a fedora hat to give him some shade. This was picked up by the television cameras and a furore of publicity surrounded the fashion statement. On return to London a Palace employee, after seeing Malcolm in the hat, agreed to order some. As the cup run progressed the £1 red or blue reproductions were snapped up by the fans as fast as the Southend firm could produce them. CUP RUN After the game Allison was
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
quoted as saying: “We could do well in the cup this year and surprise a lot of people.” He was proven correct as, with the inspirational Peter Taylor in the side, there were notable victories over teams further up the footballing pyramid in Leeds United, Chelsea and Sunderland. Palace became the then-fifth third-tier club to reach the semi-final. 67
BACKGROUND TO THE MATCH When the draw for the Third Round of the FA Cup was made the board at Scarborough held a lengthy meeting to discuss switching the tie to Selhurst Park but, having already disposed of Preston North End at home in the previous round, they chose to keep the match in the Yorkshire town. Meanwhile, back in SE25, the headline story was that Malcolm Allison was planning to bring the enigmatic Rodney Marsh from Manchester City to Selhurst Park.
ALLISON AT THE PALACE Allison took failure to reach the cup final and gain promotion badly and resigned in mid-May. However, the iconic figure put Palace on the map and obtained the services of Ian Evans, an asset in defence and a fine skipper until his serious injury, and Terry Venables, who became his coach and succeeded him as manager. He also reorganised the scouting system to bring in outstanding youngsters from all over Britain that would go on to win the FA Youth Cup for two successive seasons, many of whom would feature in the Division Two championshipwinning team of 1978/79.

RICHARD SHAW
The last time I spoke in this column, we were one day away from facing Queens Park Rangers – a wellorganised Academy and strong team who I respect a lot. I said it at the time, to overcome QPR, you really have to earn it and, ultimately, they fielded a very strong team that we were unable to defeat. QPR played with several firstteam players on the pitch and, despite taking the lead within a minute of kick-off, the lads found it hard to uphold their focus and we conceded three times. I often think scoring so early in a match poses quite a challenge at the Development stage – you need to learn how to handle it and the concentration required for professional football is an attribute that can only be picked up with time. After the QPR game, we hosted league-leaders Watford following the three-week break I mentioned above. That match was another frustrating
afternoon for us but, again, we were up against a talented side and credit must go to Watford and their manager, Hayden Mullins, for a competitive display. One positive I was glad to take from that afternoon was the return of James Daly after a good few weeks sidelined by injury. James picked up a slight knock against Watford but we’re hoping this won’t cause him any issues going forward as he is developing well with every performance. I was fortunate enough to have Rob Street and Josh Ajayi on the bench, both of whom made appearances as talented Under-18s who equip themselves well amongst older, more experienced footballers. Every week for an Under-23s footballer is a new learning curve and so this week the lads must learn to deal with both a congested fixture list – which they will experience at more senior levels – and the ability to come to terms with losses in good time.
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
The boys haven’t had long to re-group after losing to Watford and faced Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League Cup on Thursday. Because of print deadlines, I have had to write this column before knowing the game’s result. I am sure, however, regardless of the score, that the team will have worked tirelessly to boost themselves with a solid performance. I am very pleased that we have entered the Premier League Cup this year. The competition allows us to compete against Category One Academies and is a real test for the lads. I have faith in them to take onboard the advice and training I and the coaches have given them this week. Our third match in eight days sees us face Charlton Athletic. Again, I can only hope the boys handle this game in the manner we encourage them to and that they take something away from the string of fixtures they’ve had to play.
71
It’s been a frustrating spell for the lads over the past month, and now, after three weeks without a competitive match, we are playing three games in the space of eight days.

LUCY GILLETT
It was good to get the result against Leicester. I would say it was inevitable for us because we’ve definitely improved this season and to finally get that deserved and hardfought three points was a massive positive for the team. It was quite a scrappy game and it was pouring with rain which meant that pulling through, digging deep and getting three points away from home was a great achievement. We lost to Sheffield United in the next match, which was quite a disappointing result for us against a good side. The scoreline doesn’t reflect our performance, especially the first half an hour where we played some good football and really tested United. Unfortunately we had a bit of a slip in concentration and the game didn’t go our way. But Sheffield are a talented team and our display shows that we can compete against top clubs. There’s
no reason for us to assume that we’ll drop points against teams who are pushing for promotion - I think we can go into any game and stir things up. For anyone following the team from last season, you will see we’re building our squad and our ability by bringing in quite a few new faces. We don’t consider anyone ‘new’ anymore because we’re all quite close. Everyone’s comfortable with each other and we’re quite happy to voice opinions in front of the group, which is good. It helped that we played away against Durham in one of our first games of the season because that gave us quality time together. We went up on the Saturday, did a bit of team bonding and spent quite a bit of time together. It was good to get that done on the first weekend so we’ve really had quality time to settle in. Our next game is in the Continental Cup and, while we’re
CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER CITY
primarily focussed on our success in the league, for some of the girls it will be the first time playing Chelsea and this will be one of the biggest matches of their lives. It’s a game for us to show that we can turn up against bigger sides and we need to reward our loyal supporters with a good performance. I’d like to end with a note on a particularly positive experience as I was lucky enough to meet students of Tweeddale Primary School at the end of September during a school visit with Vicente and Luka from the men’s first-team. I enjoy giving back to the community and I think having someone to look up to and engage with is always important for young people. Throughout all the clubs I’ve been at, I’ve liked to do the player appearances. It’s great to show the youngsters - especially the females - that it’s not only male players they can follow.
73
I’m glad we recorded our first league win of the season against Leicester City - you can really see that our new squad have gelled.
