ROY HODGSON

Steve and his assistants, Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew are coaches I have known and respected for many years now and I am pleased that their start at Newcastle United has gone so well for them. However, that is something we must endeavour to put a stop to this afternoon. We’ve had three frustrating results in our last three games which has halted the excellent progress we had been making up until then. Defeat came against Southampton after a draining run of fixtures where many of the same players who had helped the club sustain an unbeaten run of five league games found this sixth Premier League one a ‘bridge too far’, perhaps. The more recent matches with Sheffield United and Everton were harder to take as I felt we performed better and provided a more accurate account of ourselves

on both occasions. Against Sheffield United, a rare goalkeeping error led to a narrow defeat and we were overcome at Goodison Park by a moment of individual brilliance and a harsh scoreline. When you are chasing a game and looking to find an equaliser, sometimes your defensive shape suffers, allowing your opponent to gain an advantage. The winter break came at a good time for us and I regard recuperation to be as important as physical exertion. I hope that spending a week with their families will have helped the players recover from the recent schedule and to be fully recovered and prepared for the last 12 games of the season. I have no doubt that today we will see a rejuvenated Crystal Palace side and I hope our efforts on the pitch match your unfaltering support in the stands. We will, however, be facing an in-form Newcastle side who were enjoying

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

an eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions before losing to Arsenal last Sunday. The players and I are all aware of the need to collect points in upcoming matches as we strive to secure the club its eighth consecutive season of Premier League football. This Premier League status is certainly not to be underestimated and everyone at the club knows its true value. There is a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season. Finally, a word on Wilfried Zaha. Against Everton, Wilf played his 350th match for Crystal Palace – a feat beyond the grasp of many footballers in the modern-day era. Working with Wilf day in, day out, however, I can pay tribute to his professionalism and dedication to this club and so it is no surprise to me to see him hit such landmarks. He has many more games in his locker! Enjoy the game.

Welcome to Steve Bruce, his staff, players and travelling supporters from Newcastle United and to each and every one of you here today from Crystal Palace.

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC

We spent the week off after Everton in different ways, some stayed at home with their families, others went on holiday to recover and some of the boys even continued to train, with Cenk, Jeff and Mama showing their dedication to come back as soon as possible by heading to Dubai for a training camp. Returning on Monday to Copers Cope, the energy and mood was great - however my teammates spent their winter break it is clear it had the desired effect after a difficult run of results and a period of big demands. The Sheffield United loss was a hard one for us to accept. When you play badly, okay, you have to accept that happens in football sometimes but we played well against Sheffield and deserved to take something after our effort.

Vicente apologised to us afterwards but as the manager came out and said in his interview after the game, he has nothing to say sorry for. Vicente has been important for us since he came here and this season has had many good moments - moments that have given us wins rather than draws and draws instead of losses. Against Everton, it was great that Christian scored. I know Wilf and others have spoken before about how much they enjoy playing with Christian, as he has a lot of good technical parts to his game. But to score, too, will be a big positive for him and us going into this run of fixtures. The performance was not there from us for large parts of the game. But to concede the Richarlison goal when we did, in a part of the game where we were

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

on top and looking most likely to go in front, was hard to take. That is behind us now and we are fully focussed on getting the three points today against Newcastle United. It’s important we start this run of fixtures against several teams in our part of the league positively. We want to look up the table as we have done for most of the season. Much like my comments about Sheffield in my last programme notes, Newcastle are similar in that they’re organised and well-drilled as a group. However, we are also very organised and I do believe we have that extra quality in the final third to make it count. Make some noise!

07

The first ever winter break in the Premier League has given us all a chance to recover and we feel ready for the next part of our season.

STEVE PARISH

The league’s first winter break probably came at a good time for Roy and his squad. It gave everyone a chance for an opportunity to fully switch off, recharge batteries and come back refreshed for a crucial three months ahead. Whilst the last few results haven’t gone our way, there’s still a lot to be positive about: this is our second best return at this stage of the season, versus previous Premier League campaigns. We have important players coming back from injury, the best fans in the league and a lot of football to be played before the summer break. Recent results may have added pressure on today’s game but equally a win today could well take us to within a point of the top half. Each season, it seems to get tighter and tighter, there are no easy games and today will be no

different and your support could be the difference. Off the pitch, we remain fully focussed on two projects that are of the utmost importance for the long-term security and growth of our club. On the Main Stand and Selhurst Park redevelopment front, we are close to finalizing the Section 106 planning requirements, whilst negotiations are ongoing with Sainsbury’s over a slice of the car park that we need to acquire for the project. I am hopeful of a positive update in the coming months, but it’s fair to say our Academy redevelopment has been prioritized due to the tight timeline to achieve Cat One status – and the almost immediate impact the Academy project can bring. We eagerly await the Planning Committee’s decision on the Academy plans, and we are doing

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

everything we can to help secure a positive decision, and be in a position to commence immediately in the event of a green light. I’ve spoken before about our proud and rich history in developing local footballers. When I arrived, we didn’t really have an Academy to speak of. Whilst we have invested heavily already and given them their own home, I really believe with this new facility we can go to another level and be even more successful - this project really could be a game changer for the club given the staff and the catchment area we have. Elsewhere, we are finalising details for our end of season awards night and extremely exciting pre-season tour. Thank you for your continued support, and, as always, throw yourselves behind Roy and his team today.

09

Welcome to the supporters, staff, players and directors of Newcastle United for this hugely important Premier League fixture. Welcome as always to each and every Palace supporter here today.

Patrick van Aanholt is now tied-down to the Netherlands. Here, he talks with Dan Blazer about finally representing Oranje in a competitive fixture, his friend Jaïro Riedewald’s form during his injury absence and more.

tactics but three who immediately saw and understood his value both defensively and offensively. The recently passed January transfer window marked three years for Van Aanholt in south London, and there have been plenty of highlights at both ends, at Selhurst Park and on the road, during that period.

a few goals stand out. But the two goals against Manchester United – at home and Old Trafford – they were two moments that stand out as highlights.” There will be a fair few Eagles in agreement with the former Chelsea full-back. In particular, that historical late strike at Old Trafford was vintage Van Aanholt.

“ A FEW GAMES AND A FEW GOALS STAND OUT. BUT THE TWO GOALS AGAINST MANCHESTER UNITED – AT HOME AND OLD TRAFFORD – THEY WERE TWO MOMENTS THAT STAND OUT AS HIGHLIGHTS. ” He reflects, with a smile that gives away the pride Van Aanholt is trying to stifle – we’d guess at the desire to fit that public need for footballers to be grounded and humble. However, for the first time in his career, Van Aanholt has racked up a century of appearances for one club. It’s a childhood ambition achieved. That pride is fully warranted and need not be subdued. He begins: “A few games and

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

Deep in to injury time, Palace under the cosh to hold on for what would already be an impressive point and yet alongside Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha, Van Aanholt is charging over the halfway line in possession. Eventually releasing the ball and finding Zaha on the left-hand side of the penalty box, most left-backs would begin putting on their brakes. Not Van Aanholt,

13

When Patrick van Aanholt returned from injury against Sheffield United, he was stepping out as a Crystal Palace player in a first-team fixture for the 100th time. However, the left-back had been forced to wait for that milestone, with the Blades clash being Van Aanholt’s first game since December 3rd - when injury forced him off in the first-half against Bournemouth. Perhaps it’s understandable, perhaps it’s not, but footballers rarely seem aware of upcoming milestones. Maybe they’re too focussed on the next game. Therefore, when the club’s social media accounts paid tribute to the achievement, it was the first time Van Aanholt knew he had reached three-figures for appearances. “I didn’t know until the club put it out on social media,” he reveals. “But it’s always nice to reach those figures, especially as I haven’t missed many, so it means I’ve been fit and available.” Van Aanholt is right. Since March 2011, the 29-year-old has missed just 33 games through injury – 16 of them for Palace, with his most recent spell on the sidelines causing 50% of those matchday absences. Overall, it works out at just three games a year. When available, Van Aanholt has been an ever-present for the Eagles under Sam Allardyce, Frank de Boer and Roy Hodgson: three managers of differing styles and

though, who seconds later collects a loose ball after Zaha has been dispossessed in the penalty box, drives past Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford before firing home under David De Gea. Error or not from the Red Devils ‘keeper, Van Aanholt and a small section of Old Trafford do not care; Palace have their first win at United’s home since 1989, thanks to Van Aanholt. The smile softens as Van Aanholt drifts from the interview to somewhere else in his mind, but a few seconds later the left-back brings us up to speed and adds: “Also when I’d recently signed and scored against Middlesbrough, that game was special to me as my grandfather had just passed away at the time.” Unprompted, Van Aanholt closes out that question with a review of his own personal development in those three years. And almost like he’s letting his grandfather know his influence upon him is still very much there: “I’m more mature now,” he reflects. “That has come about because I’m more experienced and I’ve become a better player for it.” With Van Aanholt continually developing during his time in south London, the injury lay-off was one that could have proved concerning for the Eagles. However, in the absence of the club’s recognised left-back, Jaïro Riedewald deputised with such success

that he was voted by the fans as Palace’s ManBetX Player of the Month for January. “We speak every day and I’m proud of him for the few games he played and it’s a sign he is on the right track, “Van Aanholt begins discussing his fellow countryman’s impact.“Jaïro’s the type of player who is multi-functional; he can play left-back, centre-back or you can put him in midfield.” We question whether Van Aanholt had any discussion with his able deputy ahead of Riedewald’s first start during Van Aanholt’s absence at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. But he reveals that wasn’t the case: “Jaïro’s the type of guy that I don’t need to give advice to because he’s that good and experienced for his age that he knows what is required of him [in each position]. “He’s been doing that very well, as you can see from him being Player of the Month. I’m very happy and pleased for him that he got the opportunity to show himself to the fans and to the manager.” Being teammates at Palace and the potential to pull on the famous orange of the Netherlands together remains, with Van Aanholt now tieddown to his country of birth. After nine non-competitive appearances, the left-back started in the Netherlands’ 5-0 win over Estonia in the recent qualification campaign for Euro 2020.

end and I’m very happy I did so and to now say I am a Dutch player.” Although a footballing decision was made to choose the Netherlands over the country of his parents’ birth, the ties to Curaçao remain strong, with Van Aanholt a regular visitor: “I go back to the island, but I haven’t been recently due to commitments with my kids. We are planning on going there in the summer for a couple of weeks because it’s just an unbelievable island.”

“ I DECIDED TO STICK TO HOLLAND AND I GOT MY CHANCE IN THE END AND I’M VERY HAPPY I STUCK WITH HOLLAND. ”

toppling Goliath. But it nearly was, with Van Aanholt coming close to representing Curaçao, an island with less than 200,000 inhabitants. “Before I made my competitive debut for Holland I spoke to Curaçao,” Van Aanholt starts to explain: “they really wanted me to come and play for them, as I qualify to represent them via my parents. “I was thinking about it, it was always there in the back of my mind. But I decided to stick to Holland and I got my chance in the

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

Before that summer break, though – that’s assuming Van Aanholt even gets one with inclusion in Ronald Koeman’s Dutch squad for Euro 2020 a strong possibility – the left-back is fully focussed on adding to those 101 Palace appearances. Furthermore, with the Eagle one goal shy of going level with Seamus Coleman as the Premier League’s twentieth highest-scoring defender of all-time, the Palace faithful could be set for a few more iconic moments like that one back at Old Trafford in August.

17

“It meant a lot to me,” he says, the pride returning in his voice. “I’d been waiting for it a long time to be fair. I’d been in and out of the squad for years. I’d been playing friendly games, so it’s nice to get a competitive game and hopefully there’s more to come with two more friendlies coming up and then the European Championships in the summer.” Thankfully for the Oranje this isn’t a story that ends with David

Welcome back everyone from the Premier League’s first ever winter break! Or in non-football terms: a week off. I took it as an opportunity to use up a couple of lieu days and visit Venice. For Valentine’s Day. What a husband. But before you think I’m disgustingly romantic, I didn’t get her a card and she had to pay for her own Aperol Spritz. To answer your two inevitable questions on the stunning Italian city…no it didn’t smell and no it didn’t flood. This travel review is only slightly worse than a recent one from Dom, one of our videographers, who visited Rome and declared: “It’s just a lot of old stuff, isn’t it?” Judging by social media, half the footballing world was in Dubai for the week. Shoutouts

to Wilfried Zaha and Martin Kelly though for bucking the trend and hitting Barbados and Beckenham, respectively. Whilst we’re on the subject of social media, I’ve had a winter break of my own on there. I decided to delete the Twitter app on my phone. Not because I receive abuse, I’ve always been

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

lucky in that respect, but just because so much of it is negative. It can’t be healthy to spend my journey in to work reading moan after moan. I don’t know how other people cope with it. I also don’t understand the mindset of people that go out of their way to write mean things about people. It’s particularly

prevalent in football. It’s fine to complain and argue about individual performances – that’s part of football fandom - but it’s a shame it often ends up in personal abuse of the player. Why do they also tag the player in to their rants? Baffling. Writing about it is actually winding me up now so let’s talk about Instagram. What a lovely place! I know so much of it is fake and not a true representation of people’s lives but I don’t care. People on Instagram are so much nicer to each other. I can see why most footballers are only on that platform. Although there has been a break for the players, the Palace TV content machine hasn’t stopped

churning out tasty titbits. We’ve had a video of the players (filmed in the build-up to the Everton game) playing their new favourite pre-training game of foot tennis in the gym. It was as competitive as these kind of games always are! The Crystal Palace Women also had a go at taking penalties backwards. They’re always a joy to film as they have no inhibitions in front of camera. I couldn’t make the shoot so Luke, our Social Media Executive went in my place. He’s still giddy with excitement and can’t wait to go back! Mayor of London Sadiq Khan visited Selhurst Park this week to find out about the amazing work Palace for Life Foundation do in south London. I have to say he

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

came across as a great guy and went out of his way to listen to the stories of those who the Foundation has helped. He was presented with a Palace shirt but with Liverpool about to win the league for the first time since Neil Buchanan’s Art Attack made its TV debut, I doubt he’ll be switching allegiance soon.

Head to eagles.cpfc.co.uk or the CPFC app to watch all the behind the scenes content.

MATCH PREVIEW With Palace having not won since Boxing Day, and Newcastle United having only won once in their last eight matches in the Premier League - 1-0 against Chelsea – both teams will be doing all they can for the three points today. But this will be a difficult task for the Magpies considering their away form, with Steve Bruce’s side without a win in their last five away games in the top-flight – the last one coming against Sheffield United back in December. Furthermore, the capital city is not a happy hunting ground for Newcastle, with the Magpies having lost more Premier League games in London than any other side in the competition’s history (78). Today’s match also sees the

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

Premier League’s two lowestscoring sides from this season going head-to-head, with Newcastle looking to avoid failing to score for the third league game in a row for the first time since January 2016. After winning on their first four visits to Selhurst Park in the Premier League between 1994 and 2013, wins for the Magpies at Selhurst Park have become something of a rarity, with Newcastle currently winless in their last four trips to SE25. If the Magpies do secure the three points today, though, they will have completed a Premier League double over the Eagles for the first time since 2013/14, when they were managed by Alan Pardew.

ORCHESTRATOR: ALLAN SAINT-MAXIMIN 40

Crystal Palace fans know all about the merits of a player who can you get you on your feet, with Wilfried Zaha having done that now for the best part of a decade. And in Allan SaintMaximin the Magpies have their own wing wizard. The statistics may not paint a pretty picture for such talents: Saint-Maximin averages 0.07 goals a game, has taken just 18 shots this season (a third of them off target) and made jusr 212 passes. However, this is one of those classic examples in football where statistics do not tell the whole story. In a well-drilled and rigid Newcastle United structure, that relies

eavily on a target man’s hold-up heavily play (Joelinton or Andy Carrol), SaintMaximin is a YouTube highlights reel kind of player. With flicks, tricks and pace to burn, the Palace right-back this afternoon will require support from the right-centre-midfielder and/ or right-centre-back in dealing with the unpredictability of the winger. Joelinton has become a much-maligned figure for the Geordie fanbase this season, with just one league goal to his name and a £40million price-tag weighing heavy on his shoulders. However, despite the poor return, it could be argued the forward is very much an integral figure for the Magpies. Newcastle United are an anomaly this season as not only are they the

GOAL-SHY MAGPIES Newcastle United have the joint-lowest top goalscorer this season, with Jonjo Shelvey’s five league goals putting him level with Sheffield United’s top scorers John Fleck and Lys Mousset, plus Watford’s leading marksman, Troy Deeney. Where the Magpies struggle in comparison to the Blades and Hornets is that those sides share the goals around their forward and midfield options. However, Newcastle, after Shelvey, have no one on more than two Premier League goals. Furthermore, two for Miguel Almirón and one for Joelinton means that Steve

one of two ways: ‘Joelinton’s hold-up play is excellent’ or ‘a target-man is crucial to how Steve Bruce wants to play but the return from Joelinton is hindering this approach.’

HISTORY Our first visit to Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic (as they were originally known) occurred in the May of 1926 when we lost 6-1 in Division Three South. It was an interesting league that year with the inclusion of three Welsh teams: Merthyr, Aberdare and Newport County. There were also four teams that are now in the Premier League: Palace, Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion and Norwich City. After this season, we were regular opponents until 1964 as we were then finally promoted to the Second Division and matches between the two clubs became much less frequent. Bournemouth have played at Dean Court (now rebranded the Vitality Stadium) since 1910 and never reached the old First Division. Their stadium is the smallest in the Premier League with

a capacity of 11,329. Only 10 years ago they were in League Two, before earning promotion in 2013 to the Championship – which they won in 2015. They are now in their fifth season in the Premier League. MEMORABLE MATCHES Although we were frequent visitors to Bournemouth before my days, we’ve only played there seven times in the last 56 years. Of our four visits in the Premier League, we’ve lost one, drawn two and won one - so that 2-0 victory in 2017 is going to have to be my choice today, especially as it was only our second win at Dean Court since 1951! It was a midweek fixture on a wet and chilly January night and, at the sixth attempt, was our first Premier League win under new manager Sam Allardyce – plus it was our first clean sheet in 22 away games. A Scott Dann goal at the start

of the second-half put us ahead and Christian Benteke clinched it in the second minute of added time with a header that resulted in wild celebrations in the away end. TRAVEL First of all, make sure that you can get in. With an allocation of only a little over 1;000 tickets, this is always a hotly demanded fixture and some serious Loyalty Points will be required to secure a seat. Bournemouth is further away than you think: 116 miles via the M3. It will take two hours and 30 minutes on a good day but I would allow three hours. Your other alternatives are the A3 to Portsmouth and then along the M27 or take the A31 ‘Hog’s Back’ after Guildford and join the M3 at Winchester. The train is normally your best option but the dreaded planned

PUBS AND BEER There are 25 microbreweries in Dorset. These include Barefaced which started life in a garden shed in Wimborne, Southbourne which is run by a former Ringwood brewer and Way Outback – another brewery born in a shed. Southbourne’s tap room is in Poole Hill (three miles from the ground) but Way Outback’s is only a mile from Dean Court. I’ve not

tried their Rise and Shine session IPA yet, but with Mosaic, Simcoe and Jester hops and pink guava purée in the recipe (I’m not joking) it sounds interesting. Otherwise, a favourite pub of ours is the quirky Firkin Shed which always has a great choice of beers but they don’t allow kids in. Also banned here are mobile phones and you’ll be asked to pay a fine to charity if you’ve forgotten to put yours on silent. You won’t find Steve Parish joining us in this establishment: real ale and no phones would constitute as his version of hell. A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS Here’s a question for trivia fans: which two long-serving members of Crystal Palace’s staff both played for Bournemouth at the same time? You might know that Joel Ward was sent on loan to Bournemouth in League Two when Portsmouth were flying high in the Premier League in 2008 how times change! The Cherries had to start the season on minus 17 points and finished it in 21st place. Also playing with Joel in that Bournemouth team then was Scott Guyett, who subsequently joined Palace in 2010, and is the club’s Head of Sports Science and Strength & Conditioning. Scott was also the first Australian ever to play at the new Wembley Stadium when he appeared in the 2007 League One play-off final for Yeovil Town.

St Francis Parish Church Parts of Crystal Palace and the pride of south London can be found all over the globe. This week, we shed light on the Eagles’ little-known tribute to the Busby Babes’ Munich tragedy.

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

22.02.2020

50

St Francis Parish Church, Dudley, proudly houses a little-known tribute to one of football’s most talented characters. St Francis is little over two miles from 23 Malvern Crescent, the council-owned house where Duncan Edwards was born, and just half a mile from 31 Elm Road, where the future Manchester United icon would grow up; knocking a ball around his front and back garden for hours. St Francis is surrounded by the streets, pitches and schools where Edwards grew into one of England’s brightest prospects, but, standing 130 miles from Selhurst Park, it’s difficult to understand the parish’s association with Crystal Palace Football Club. Stepping inside the small, angular church and turning left, however, those who look upwards will notice Crystal Palace’s first club crest displayed in intricate stained glass. A church window may seem an unusual place to house a footballing badge - especially with so little connecting south London and Dudley - but there is a touching reason the Midlands town proudly

holds such a nod to the Eagles. The stained glass in question is a tribute to Duncan Edwards, and shows the left-half memorialised in United and England kit with the words ‘God is with us for our Captain’ and ‘Though there be many members yet is there one body’ adorning ribbons across his chest. Underneath the depiction of Edwards in United’s plunging red and white kit, an inscription reads: ‘Thanking God for the Life of Duncan Edwards, died at Munich, February 1958.’ Sixty-two years ago earlier this month, February 6th, 1958, a plane carrying Edwards and his United teammates, staff, fans and journalists tragically crashed following take-off after a refuelling stop in Munich, Germany. Two weeks later, Edwards resultantly lost his life after a heroic battle. In total, 23 people died from the Munich air tragedy. The football world came together in grief and support of Manchester United, which lost eight players in the disaster. Crystal Palace became involved

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

alongside fellow London club Brentford when St Francis made a plea for Football League sides to help finance a stained-glass memorial of their local hero, Duncan Edwards. Alongside Manchester United, Brentford and the local Wren’s Nest Bowling Club, Crystal Palace were one of four financers for the tribute. If there was any reason beyond decency and respect, the exact grounds why Palace responded to St Francis’ call are unknown, but the club had several links with the Busby Babes and, namely, Edwards, even before February 1958. One link surrounds Palace forward Peter Berry, whose brother Johnny was one of the players involved in the Munich crash. Peter, the younger Berry brother, had a game for Palace two days after the tragedy occurred, but flew out to Munich to support his sibling at the next available chance. United’s Johnny sustained severe injuries from the accident; at one stage seemingly its worst affected survivor. Johnny also suffered amnesia from the crash and was treated on a

bed of ice as he and Duncan Edwards simultaneously fought to stay alive. Of course, of the two, only Johnny survived. Johnny no doubt held a deep affinity for his former teammate Edwards, and his little brother Peter surely felt similarly connected to the iconic Busby Babe. Peter didn’t leave Palace until May 1958, three months after the disaster, and his relationship with the club may well have played a part in its financial support of the Edwards memorial in 1961. But the Glaziers were linked with Edwards before then, too, when, in 1956, Palace hosted him alongside Bill Foulkes and a teenage Bobby Charlton in a friendly at Selhurst Park. Conscribed professional footballers took on the south Londoners in an Army XI and that day, in front of just 4,700 spectators, Edwards captivated the crowd, pulling the Army side from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Palace. The below excerpt describes it best, taken from an excellent Croydon Advertiser report by Gerald Williams (who, incidentally, became the Daily Mail’s Manchester football correspondent after Eric Thompson lost his life in the Munich crash). YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN BIG DUNCAN EDWARDS You get the sort of game where you think, “What on earth can I write about that?” and you get the games where you have to ask yourself,

“Now, what can I possibly leave out?” Monday’s floodlit friendly at Selhurst Park was unquestionably in the second category. You most certainly cannot leave out the story of Duncan Edwards, the Army left half, who came to Selhurst fresh from playing for England against Ireland on Saturday. For, with only five minutes remaining, and Palace leading the Army 3-1, Edwards, Manchester United’s 14-stone wonder boy, decided something drastic was needed. So, having moved himself up to the attack, where he became an unspecified inside forward, he promptly thumped in two of the most casually brilliant goals you could wish to see, both from just inside the penalty area. No, there is headline material galore in Duncan Edwards’ feat. You cannot possibly leave that out. Indeed, Edwards’ rightful inclusion in footballing history cannot be left out. And, even for two clubs separated by 200 miles, his tragedy cannot be overlooked. When Sir Matt Busby unveiled St Francis’ tribute to Edwards, he said: “These windows should keep alive his name forever, and they will shine always.” Whatever its reason for helping ensure Edwards’ legacy continues to shine, Crystal Palace Football Club can be proud it did so.

Garry Thompson made his name at Coventry City, but he was always Aston Villa at heart. The striker’s nomadic career really revolved around spells leading the line of various clubs in the west Midlands. He thrived as a Sky Blue, and was more prolific still as a Baggie. There was a brief stint out of his comfort zone with Sheffield Wednesday, but he was always destined to end up at Villa Park, his home from home. “I came close to joining twice, first when Villa were interested in taking me from Coventry, and then when I was leaving Albion a few years later,” he said. “I presumed Villa would go and get a deal done, but Wednesday blew everyone else out of the water. I went there and, towards the end of the season, we played at Villa. As I was walking up the tunnel, Ron Wylie, the assistant manager, asked if I’d be interested in a move. I told him I’d gladly walk back. He told me they would get it sorted. I ended up going to Doug Ellis’ house and it was one of the easiest deals he ever did.” Thompson suffered relegation at Villa, playing alongside Andy Gray

up front, and almost saw his career snatched away by injury – the club went as far as to offer him the chance to retire having struggled to diagnose a fitness issue – before a specialist in Chesterfield discovered he was suffering with an inguinal hernia. He subsequently scored 11 goals to help restore Graham Taylor’s team to the First Division a year later. That was the pinnacle, swiftly followed by a season at Watford back in the second tier. Yet, with Ian Wright having refractured his shin in the draw with Derby County, it was to the 30-year-old journeyman whom Steve Coppell turned to bolster Palace’s ailing front-line. Perhaps he recalled a more youthful Thompson’s impressive strength and imposing presence from a game at Highfield Road back in 1979, when Coppell had scored twice only for Manchester United to succumb 4-3. The striker had mustered the hosts’ first that day. Regardless, having been plucked from Watford’s reserves for £200,000, he was eager to play his part on an unexpected return to the elite.

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

Thompson had worked with Dave Sexton at Coventry and Howard Wilkinson at Wednesday. “They taught me a great deal, and I also played under the Grahams, Turner and Taylor, at Villa. But Coppell rekindled my enthusiasm for the game at 30. People had Palace down as a long-ball side, but when you have Ian Wright, Mark Bright, Eddie McGoldrick and Andy Gray, you can’t really say that. Copps used to say: ‘Go and excite me.’ After some of the negative people you have to deal with, it was like a breath of fresh air.” Palace handed their new signing an immediate debut against, fittingly enough, Villa at Selhurst Park. Taylor’s team were challenging Liverpool for the title. The home side were hovering just above the relegation zone. Yet the new man’s dynamism shone through. Villa could not handle their former teammate who scored with virtually his first involvement, converting Bright’s knockdown in the six-yard box. Villa offered little in riposte, to leave Taylor bemoaning the effectiveness of the hosts’ offside trap. In truth, it had been the familiar face leading their line who had punctured the visitors’ title challenge.

The 2019/20 season marks 30 years on from the first year ‘back’ in the top-flight under Steve Coppell, and this week The Athletic writer Dom Fifield looks back at when the Eagles turned to Garry Thompson to fill the void left by an injured Ian Wright.

PALACE FOR LIFE

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, visited Selhurst Park this week to meet young people benefitting from positive mentoring run by Palace for Life Foundation during the school holidays with investment from the Mayor’s Young Londoners Fund. The mentoring is part of the Premier League Kicks programme that supports young people to reach their full potential and to prevent them getting caught up in violent crime. The programme also gives access to free football sessions and activities, as well as educational workshops. Sadiq was joined on the visit by former Palace forward Mark Bright, who said: “Palace for Life Foundation is doing fantastic work to help young south Londoners get back on the right path and keep them away from crime, it is something I am passionate

about supporting and I want to see it continue and grow.” Across the next year, the mentor programme will see 30 young Londoners each receive 12 weeks of dedicated mentoring support from the Foundation. The young people are referred by schools, youth offending teams or pupil referral units and receive a range of support to get them back into education or employment. One of those who has already benefitted is 15-yearold Rebecca, who was referred by her school for her disruptive behaviour. Rebecca has since rediscovered her love of football and is now planning to go to college. She said: “My mentor took an interest in me and asked where I saw myself going in the future. She helped me reflect on my life and be open about what I was going through and

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

what was causing me to do the things I was doing. It helped me get back into football and I’ve signed for a team. I’m also a senior prefect at school and I haven’t had any detentions.” The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “When I was a teenager, I was lucky to have a youth club nearby which allowed me to take up boxing and keep me out of mischief. Sport has the potential to inspire and change young people’s lives, and that’s why I want Londoners to have the same opportunities that I did. It’s vital we help young people make the right choices as early as we can, and by joining together and investing in our communities we can help put them on a path away from the dangers of crime.” Find about more at : www.palaceforlife.org or @palaceforlife

Jay Rich-Baghuelou has been named club captain of Crystal Palace Under-23s after less than 10 games with the Eagles. Here, the centre-back talks with Dan Blazer about the immediate impact he has made down Copers Cope Road.

22.02.2020

58

Jay Rich-Baghuelou was never meant to sign for Crystal Palace. It was never meant to extend further than just training with the Eagles. The word ‘trial’ was never mentioned to him. We’ll hand over to RichBaghuelou. He explains: “I was playing for Welling United and Shaun Derry came down to watch me in a game against Tonbridge Angels. But I had no idea that Crystal Palace were coming to see me play. “Eventually it progressed that my agent told me there was an opportunity to train with Palace in the week and then play for Welling at the weekend – Welling only train once-a-week as it’s not full-time.” This setup was something the defender was keen to do because he “needed full-time training to develop.” But for anyone who has watched the handful of games Rich-Baghuelou has played for the Eagles, with those fast-becomingtrademark marauding runs forward from the centre of defence, will understand why talk turned to signing him on a permanent deal pretty quickly. He elaborates: “After a couple of weeks of mixing with the lads and really enjoying myself, talk of a trial started to come about.” And the rest is now history. This chance at Palace isn’t something the former Dulwich Hamlet player is taking for granted. There can’t be too many footballers

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

who display a passion for warmups: “It’s just little things [that are next level] like doing proper warmups beforehand, people talking you through every aspect of what you need to be doing and where you need to be. It’s all there for you to become the best player you can. “You can’t take those things for granted. I know where I’ve come from and I want to play at the highest level possible so I always have an understanding that all this could be taken away and nothing is a ‘given’ – I’ve always got to work hard.” But there must’ve been a point where the former Palm Beach player didn’t think it was going to happen for him as a struggling forward. Not many footballers change their position at the age of 17, especially so drastically from striker to centreback, but that’s what happened to Rich-Baghuelou in one of football’s classic ‘sliding doors’ moments. He reveals: “Previously, I was a striker in Australia before Dulwich Hamlet converted me to a centreback in their Academy. “It was pre-season at Dulwich; I was a striker – I wasn’t the best striker. I was just an aggressive player. In pre-season they said ‘we want to try you at centre-half’ and I’ve been there ever since and that’s when I started to get noticed by other clubs.” With a grounded and respectful attitude – plus the self-

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

deprecation to admit he wasn’t the “best striker” – it’s understandable why Derry wanted to coach RichBaghuelou. The pair clearly have a great relationship between them, with the 20-year-old commenting: “Shaun is a really good coach. I’m really happy he’s my coach; he’s helped me with my game, especially the defensive work - in particular the communication.” As a former Crystal Palace captain Derry knows what to look for and what is required from the player with the armband. Following current club captain Gio McGregor’s loan move to Dartford F.C. in January, Rich-Baghuelou’s immediate impact saw him handed the prestige of leading the team out. The pride in being at the front of the line is obvious, with the centre-back going further in explaining why he feels the honour was bestowed on him. He said: “I’m really happy to be captain. “I think it came about due to my experience from the non-league level. I’ve had a taste of first-team football at Welling and Dulwich. I demand more from players in the Under-23s, I like to set an example to the younger players coming up. “The football in the first-team is a lot different from the Under-23s – certain things that happen at 23s level wouldn’t be allowed to happen in first-team football.” A mentality that belies his years: Jay Rich-Baghuelou has it all.

Today’s programme cover star and feature interview, Patrick van Aanholt, is now starting his fourth year with the Eagles. Here’s a throwback to when he signed from Sunderland back in January 2017.

PALACEXI IN TIME By Ian King

Club historian Ian King looks back at the time when Crystal Palace, a Southern League club, toppled the 1905 and 1906 FA Cup finalists - and would be 1907 First Division champions - Newcastle United in January 1907.

PALACEXI PALACE XI IN TIME By Ian King

HORACE THE HERO From kick-off the Magpies attacked the Palace goal but were given a warning from their lower league opposition when Dickie Roberts netted only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The Toon replied in similar fashion with an effort that was also chalked off. But, just as half-time approached, a misunderstanding in the United defence allowed Horace Astley to nip in and score. Upon the restart Newcastle attacked desperately, with the team eager to secure their third successive cup final appearance. But Palace’s rear-guard of Archie Needham and Matthew Edwards held firm, all whilst the south London outfit continued to pose problems on the break – most notably when George ‘Lady’ Woodger went through but shot over the bar with only ‘keeper Lawrence to beat. For the final 10 minutes Newcastle forced corner after corner but could not find a way through the Glaziers’ resolute defence that, through injury, was a man down as the final whistle approached. It should be remembered that Palace were 15th in the Southern League and inflicted on the club, who were sitting second

in the Football League, their first home defeat of the season. THE WELCOME HOME As news of this momentous result filtered through to south London, crowds gathered at the now-defunct Crystal Palace High Level station. However only two players - Bob Hewitson and Archie Needham - appeared along with club secretary Goodman and a handful of directors. It was then announced that the rest of the team would arrive after 7pm on the Monday evening. Therefore, once again a sizeable crowd - estimated at around 2,000 - assembled on the Parade, with a band in attendance to entertain them as they waited. An hour later a great cheer went up and captain Wilf Innerd was carried shoulder high above the throng that, with lamps lit, made its way down Anerley Hill to the Low Level station and then back up via Ledrington Road. *With thanks to Steve Martyniuk, whose excellent ‘The Origin of Crystal Palace FC Vol.2’ was invaluable in researching the above information.

67

NORTH EAST CONNECTIONS On 26th April 1905 John Robson quit as the Middlesbrough manager and joined the newly-formed Crystal Palace F.C. and the club lost no time in recruiting players as the annual date at which players became out of contract approached. Palace secretary Edmund Goodman travelled up to the north east on Friday 28th to meet Robson and he had booked a meeting room at the Metropole Hotel, on Clayton Street, in Newcastle for Monday May 1st. There, with Robson, he signed a number of players whose previous clubs had been Newcastle United, Sunderland or Middlesbrough. In another twist that weekend, the Magpies were away at managerless Boro, where a 3-0 victory secured the Division One title. The Palace side that overcame Newcastle on that famous afternoon in 1907 contained seven players who had links with the North East – four of them remained from the group of players that Goodman signed on that profitable day in 1905, with Dick Harker and Wilf Innerd lining up against their former club.

The tournament in Tel Aviv was excellent, where we were pitted against some high-calibre opposition, who were all at least a year older than us. David Boateng was our only Under-19s player, making him the oldest in the squad. The outcome from the trip in terms of results, performances and the off-field benefits were so great. The attitude and application of the squad was exemplary and they got so much from the trip. Israel is a fantastic country and Tel Aviv is a wonderful city, so it was excellent for the lads’ development to experience a new culture and play against teams from different parts of the world to face alternate styles of play. Fionn Mooney was part of the squad out there, and since coming back from the tournament he received an England Under-17 call-up. Fionn is known for his creativity, skill and range of

passing; a real technical player. Going to Malaga with the England Under-17s off the back of Israel means Fionn has had a couple of back-to-back experiences that are great for his development, and experiences his form and talents fully merit. The lads are currently on a five-game winning run in the league and that is extremely pleasing. I remember writing in this column towards the beginning of the season, at a time when the results weren’t there, and I explained that the setbacks were to be expected with the players learning a new style of play. At Academy level it isn’t all about results, it’s about individual and team development, playing with an identity. In the first 10 games I saw loads of positives but also plenty of things that needed tweaking. But ultimately I believed in the players and their capabilities.

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

To now see the team winning games, and playing in a way that is implementing our core beliefs, is hugely pleasing. In our five-game winning run David Omilabu has been superb, epitomised by his back-to-back braces in our last two games – particular impressing in our victory over top of the table Millwall. David is a player who has had to wait for his chance this season, and the coaching staff and I are delighted to see him take the opportunity handed to him. Initially, David would’ve said his preferred position was as a No.9, however, I, the coaching staff and he are now of the opinion he can play anywhere across the frontline. He’s a natural finisher with electric pace and those attributes, coupled with his flexibility across the forward line will give him a great chance at having a successful career.

71

The Under-18s are in a really good patch at the moment, with international call-ups, the positive performance in the Israel Winter Tournament and strong league form. It’s great to see the players responding to the coaching philosophy implemented at the beginning of the season.

SIOBHAN WILSON

When I graduated from university in America, after four years of playing over there, I went to Spain and played for Malaga for a year across two seasons, six months in Segunda and six months in La Liga. And then I left there for Italy for a half-a-year stint where I played in Serie A with Sassuolo before returning to England. In America they focus a lot more on the physical and athletic aspects of the game. When I was there, the amount of running and weights training we did was more than I’ve ever experienced in my career. That’s the main part of their game. But then when I look at the Spanish game, it’s completely different. For example, tackles that the referee wouldn’t take issue with here in England, you just wouldn’t get away with in Spain – shoulder barges are a no-go! They’re extremely tacticallyfocussed and precise in the way they play. That aspect of the game I felt took away from my identity as a

player, as every movement and pass is predetermined. For some players that works but for me it just didn’t. I remember playing against Atletico Madrid and coming against my toughest opponents to date in Amanda Sampedro and Jennifer Hermoso – who is now at Barcelona. There was a point in the game where I went to close Hermoso down and before I could even get there the ball was already through my legs. The travelling experience was amazing but after my 18 months in mainland Europe, off the back of several years in the States, I wanted to settle closer to home. Things didn’t work out at Charlton but I’m hopeful that at Palace I can settle for a sustained period. I wanted to go in somewhere new and make a fresh start and prove myself to the manager and my teammates. Furthermore, my decision was helped that I knew Bianca Baptiste from my playing days at Enfield Town and Tottenham Hotspur.

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

It was disappointing to lose 3-1 to Leicester City on my debut but the faith shown in me from the manager to start that game, with just one training session behind me, meant a lot. I kept my place for the next game against Southampton in the FA Cup and this was the game that was eventually called off with 10 minutes remaining, despite us leading 3-0. The pitch was in a terrible state before the first whistle, and by half-time it was torn to pieces. Of course, with so much of the game played, it would’ve been preferable to continue but we understood the ref’s predicament and we were glad to get the job done in an equally empathic manner, in the rescheduled fixture a few days later. Our game against Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round of the FA Cup also fell foul to the weather. That’s now been rescheduled for Tuesday at Hayes Lane, 7:30pm K.O. and it would be great to see the stands full for the game against a Women’s Super League side.

73

I signed for Palace in January after they put in the ‘seven-day approach’ request to Charlton Athletic. During that time it gave me a good chance to review my next steps and Palace stood out as the best place for me after various spells abroad.
