ROY HODGSON
I have no doubt that anyone who falls into this latter category will still be reeling from the shock of conceding a 95th minute goal against Wolves last weekend and bemoaning the loss of two valuable points. It has been a long time since we, as a team and coaching staff, have been so devastated by a failure to secure a result and the feeling of having suffered a defeat, despite the scoreline, was predominant amongst everyone in the dressing room. I am more than aware that one should be able to put these things into perspective and we have to look no further back than the previous home game against Aston Villa to realise that. Unfortunately, football people are not usually good at perspective and, speaking
personally, I was happy to get back on the training field and begin our preparations for today’s game. Recriminations are both pointless and damaging, and I am sure that our players will be looking to put that event behind them and give their all when trying to achieve three points today. Your support from the stands was excellent as always and certainly encouraged the boys to play some good football in the second half and to establish a winning position. We shall need that backing again today as we face a strong and talented Norwich City team that have enjoyed so much success under their new manager, Daniel Farke, over the last two seasons in the Championship and now in the Premier League.
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
It appears that more and more often newly promoted teams fare well on their return to top level football and Norwich’s recent win over Manchester City is testament to that. We shall need to be at our best today if we are to get the result all Palace fans crave. Finally, I would like to add a word of praise for Norwich owners Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones. I have long admired their commitment and passion as true Norwich fans who have backed the club and steered it through difficult times. Their faith has never wavered and I hope that they will enjoy being back ‘in the big time’ even if I am unable to wish them any joy in that respect today! Thanks for your loyal support. Enjoy the game.
05
Firstly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the players, staff and directors of Norwich City F.C. and, of course, to every Crystal Palace fan.

I must begin by mentioning the wonderful afternoon I had at Tweeddale Primary School on Tuesday afternoon with my teammate Vicente and Lucy Gillett, from the women’s team. To meet so many of our young fans, to hear and see how much this club and the players mean to them, was a special moment for me. I shared stories of my youth with them, ones that I hope will inspire them to follow their dreams, whether that be in football or not. Back to the action on the pitch, I mentioned in my last column about the loss of concentration that we got away with against Aston Villa with the disallowed goal. To then have a similar situation against Wolves in the final minute was extremely disappointing. It was a game we really should’ve made certain of the three points long before Jota’s goal
at the end. We are honest with ourselves, and know that was two points dropped. However, to take a positive from the draw, it means another unbeaten game at our home of Selhurst. We are pleased to have avoided a defeat in our last five league games at home. It’s important we corrected the frustration that we had at Selhurst last season, as playing in south London, in front of our passionate and noisy fans, is the best experience for us. Against Everton, Aston Villa and Wolves we had time in those games in which the opposition had been reduced to 10-men. It is quite surprising to have this happen for three home league games in a row. Despite what many people think, it isn’t always easier playing against 10-men as they make themselves more compact, sit deeper and let
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
you have the ball in the spaces that aren’t easy to create a chance from. Today’s game against Norwich City is a chance for us to show we have 100 per cent focus until the final whistle, to remove those late moments like the ones we suffered against Villa and Wolves. Norwich have shown, like all promoted teams this season, that they are going to stick to the plan that got them promoted and that is something I respect. They have played without fear and their attacking threat in Pukki, Cantwell and Buendía have started the season well. We are expecting to face a dynamic team and one that is quick in transitioning the ball up the field towards our goal. For us though, as always, we’ve planned well, trained hard and believe we have the talent and game plan to give our fans the happiness of a victory. Make some noise!
07
We have a great chance today to push back up the Premier League table. These early stages have shown how tight the league will be this season and we want to be fighting for the top-half.

STEVE PARISH
Last week ended disappointingly but overall it was an excellent second half performance against a very good Wolves side; we need to take all the positives from that as we head into today’s game. There was a lot of controversy surrounding VAR last week, especially offsides. I’m surprised that people are taken aback we still find things to disagree on; VAR was never going to fix everything and there’s a trade-off between it being involved in every decision and trying to eradicate the worst errors. Regarding offside specifically, it feels as though ironically that the human eye was probably doing a better job, it sort of created its own tolerance level as the linesman would never be able to see the tiny margins VAR is now picking up and penalising. Vicente is today’s programme cover star, and it was great to read how happy he is with life in London and also the news of his young lad’s
experience in our Academy. Vicente pulled off a remarkable save against Wolves, and is becoming a very consistent performer. With Mamadou getting fitter and stronger each week as he continues his recovery from the long-term injury, James Tomkins playing for the U23s, and Gary slotting in so seamlessly alongside Joel and Patrick, I’m hopeful that our defence will continue its reputation of being extremely miserly. Vicente, Luka and Lucy from our women’s team went to a local primary school earlier in the week, interacting with hundreds of youngsters. We’ve made a concerted effort for more of this type of activity because it’s so important that we inspire a new, young and local generation. I hope that we can continue to be a force for good in south London and help excite local youngsters. I know this is something that Roy and the players also believe in. Of course, a winning team will help!
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
We have started emailing every ticket purchaser and Season Ticket holder asking about your experience at Selhurst after each home game. Our marketing team update me and the department heads with the results – we look at every single one. Whether you’ve been impressed by a staff member who went out of their way to help, or you noticed something that wasn’t quite good enough, please take the time to tell us. A word on today’s visitors - they had an absolutely incredible season last year to win the Championship and with wins against Newcastle and the astonishing victory over champions Manchester City, their campaign in the top-flight has started well. They have a proven goalscorer in their ranks, which makes them exceptionally dangerous, and we will undoubtedly need a strong team performance to overcome them. Throw everything you can behind Roy’s team. Up the Palace!

A Palace fan favourite already, the language barrier means Eagles don’t always get to hear from their No.31. However, Spanish-speaking Luke Dunn, sat down with Vicente Guaita and discussed Lionel Messi, former boss Unai Emery and iconic ‘keeper, Santiago Cañizares.

gives way to the professional and Guaita’s game face turns on. It’s a switch that makes his successful transition to the Premier League that much more understandable. He begins: “When I came into the team last year, my teammates welcomed me. Above all, there was Julián [Speroni] - a very good ‘keeper who had an incredible career at Crystal Palace. There are very few people who can say they’ve achieved what he achieved, even just staying at the club for such a long time.”
lot. Hendo [Stephen Henderson] has come in - he’s a great ‘keeper and a great person. Julián was definitely a big loss but we have a good group this year, too.” With one Spanish speaker moving on, another has come in in Víctor Camarasa - with Guaita naturally gravitating towards his new compañero: “We’re both from Valencia; he’s another great person. He had a fantastic individual season last year with Cardiff and having just arrived is wanting to help
“WHEN I CAME INTO THE TEAM
LAST YEAR, MY TEAMMATES WELCOMED ME. ABOVE ALL, THERE WAS JULIÁN”
Asked if it’s harder without him, Guaita says: “Well, football’s a bit like that. At times you have new teammates, other times you remain with teammates. I think last season we had a really great group. Between Julián, Wayne [Hennessey] and I, we got on really well. This year we’re still really happy, Deano [Dean Kiely] is still here as a goalkeeping coach. He’s a great person and a true professional who helps us a

the team as much as possible. Of course, it’s always great to have another Spanish speaker - another Valenciano - in the team.” And indeed, there’s no hiding Guaita’s Valencian roots, having grown up in Los Ches’ Academy in the shadow of another iconic blonde, Santiago Cañizares. “It was an absolutely fantastic opportunity to work alongside Cañizares,” he starts glowingly. “I think he’s known worldwide, and
13
As a typically jovial Vicente Guaita strolls down to the Palace media centre with a smile on his face - fist-bumping every member of staff as he goes, greeting a few in lightning-quick Spanish - it’s easy to forget a footballing CV that would comfortably blow most Premier League ‘keepers out of the water. Here is a man who was once tasked with filling the sizeable void left by the legendary Santiago Cañizares at Valencia; a man who forced his way into Unai Emery’s first-team at the age of just 22; a man who cut his teeth against the likes of David Villa, Juan Mata and David Silva in training; and a man who once stared down Barcelona’s Lionel Messi from 12-yards and parried his penalty clear. But with no flicker of an ego, the patience to give you all the time you need and the humility to shrug off his claims to fame as ‘just part of the job’, it’s also easy to see why he would be a popular choice for any club. Despite having spent just over a year in south London, there’s no questioning Guaita’s popularity at Palace. His performances have rightly won over Selhurst and he’s definitely a cool character. But as we sit down to start our interview ‘formally’, the light-hearted, silver-haired Vicente

he has saved a penalty from one of the greatest footballers of alltime. Modest as ever, he seemed keen to downplay the event: “It’s definitely special but it’s special to say that I’ve played against lots of great players,” he casually says. “Whether it’s Messi or players here in England, we play against great players all the time. Maybe in England we don’t have the same culture of just one
Unai Emery, who put faith in him at Valencia. “I worked a bit with Quique Sánchez Flores as well but did spend more time with Emery. His results and successes speaks for themselves. He’s a coach that works a lot for the team. He pays attention to every detail with the players he’s maybe even a bit heavy - but that’s how he gets performances and he does get those performances
“YOU’RE SAVING A PENALTY FROM RONALDO OR MESSI, OKAY, PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER THOSE INDIVIDUAL MOMENTS FOR A LONG TIME BUT HELPING THE TEAM IS WHAT IT REALLY MEANS TO BE A GOOD ‘KEEPER”
or two players standing out. “There are circumstances where, say, you’re saving a penalty from Ronaldo or Messi, okay, people will remember those individual moments for a long time but helping the team is what it means to be a good ‘keeper.” Good goalkeepers will inevitably need good coaches, and arguably the most influential in giving Guaita his big break was
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
which is the important thing. We did have great years together and all you have to do is look at his CV. When you have a CV as impressive as that, it says all you need to know about the coach.” Having once picked out Isco and Paco Alcácer as two teenage prospects to watch in Valencia’s youth setup, you have to wonder if Guaita would ever turn his eye for talent towards coaching.
15
being able to develop at Valencia alongside him was incredible. I still have memories of training sessions with him. He was so competitive, wanting to win in every aspect. That was great for me. There were little things that maybe I didn’t notice at the time that I now know were so important. He even taught me how to bandage myself up. He took me aside one pre-season and told me how to tape my fingers. Those are the memories that really stay with you.” They’re memories Vicente will inevitably look to pass down the generations, first and foremost to his son, who is now enrolled in Palace’s own Academy. “He started playing in the Academy this year. He has the ball at his feet all day and though he’s still very young to be playing football he’s involved at the Academy now. We’re not sure if he’ll end up playing in goal. I’ve been telling him to play outfield.” “I’ll be proud to see any of my kids playing sport. I started playing football when I was really young, my dad was a goalkeeper for Valencia and bit by bit I’ve gone about trying to achieve what he did. The idea that one of my children might carry on playing football definitely makes me proud but I really just want to see him happy and enjoying sport.” Unlike most ‘keepers, Guaita will be able to tell his kids that

debut came because César Sánchez - who used to be at Tottenham - and Miguel Ángel Moya - who now plays at [Real] Sociedad - got injured. You have to know how to wait.” With two clean sheets setting a nice backdrop to a solid start to this season, it might take something special to shift Vicente away from Roy Hodgson’s starting lineup. And it seems the Spaniard
“I’M HAVING A GREAT TIME IN LONDON. I CAN SAY THAT I’M HAPPY IN ENGLAND, HAPPY AT PALACE AND HAPPY IN THE HOME OF THE EAGLES”
trusts its youth: “Generally, it’s a really important thing to have players grown in your own Academy and every X years you’ll get a Wilfried Zaha. I hope there are lots who can make the jump to the first team at Palace.” His advice for them?“It’s all about waiting. Over the course of the season you’ll see more players featuring because of different circumstances. It’s all about waiting for those opportunities. I remember my

is more than satisfied with his time as an Eagle so far. “The truth is, I’ve had a great year in the team and a great year at the club. Though it may not seem like it, it’s really difficult to leave your home country but I’m having a great time in London. I can say that I’m happy in England, happy at Palace and happy in the home of the Eagles.” He stands up, smiles and closes out the interview with a fist-bump. Of course he does
17
He says: “It’s not easy being a coach or a scout, but when you’re speaking about players like Isco or Alcácer - or someone like Aaron Wan-Bissaka from last season - these are players that breakthrough and clearly speak for themselves on the field. You can always see that talent like that on the pitch.” With that said, it’s clear Vicente buys into a team that

When was the last time a Palace TV live stream failed? Think about it. Fight the urge to post on a message board ‘Typical Palace, can’t do anything right. The club is a joke.’ I have a vague memory of a press conference not being streamed the season before last and me going on a Twitter rant about how it was out of our control and it’s the first time it has happened in ages. But I can’t remember exactly when that was because after years of pain I think we’ve nailed it. The earliest live streams I remember us doing were press conferences. One issue that seemed to take a lifetime to solve was being able to hear the questions. We tried mics in the ceiling of the media centre at Selhurst, but they picked up too much journalist keyboardtapping. Then a boom operator (sung
by our ex-designer George Trindog to the tune of Smooth Operator) was mooted but it would’ve got in the way of other cameras. In the end we plumped for two handheld microphones that get passed around the room like the conch in Lord of the Flies (Hooray for GCSE English Literature). It wasn’t
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
the culture at the time but the journalists soon got used to waiting for a microphone before asking. Having started writing about all this, I now realise I don’t have the word count to talk about all the live stream ‘fun’ in Cape Town, Berlin, Cincinnati and Mitcham. I’ll have to save the fails for
another column. For now, Iet’s focus on how things are done. Our cameraman can be in any country and all he needs is a camera and a backpack containing a LiveU 600. This is a device the camera plugs into which contains eight SIM cards on three different networks. The signal from all eight SIMs are bonded together and the pictures are sent back to our gallery at Selhurst Park. There we have a director and replay operator plus a commentator alongside Mark Bright. Once score graphics and commentary have been added onto the footage, it gets sent via another smaller LiveU unit to a website called Brightcove which encodes it all, and then posted onto eagles.cpfc.co.uk. That’s also exactly how things are done for Under-23 games now,
although the cameraman is in Beckenham and not Helsingør. It wasn’t an easy decision for the guys to make to stream only to certain Members but as you can see from how things are done, there are plenty of costs involved. However, we have recently successfully tested pay-per-view, meaning soon you will be able to pay a small fee to watch individual games. Something that will be free is a premiere screening of a film about the ‘Team of the Eighties’ which Alan Ryan (my former Executive Producer here at Palace) has made for BT Sport. It’ll be at Boxpark on Tuesday 8th October and I’ll be chatting onstage to the likes of Vince Hilaire and Jim Cannon. So stick it in your Filofax!
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
Team of the Eighties is the latest in the awardwinning BT Sport Films series, which has recently included Brothers in Football: the true story of south London amateurs Corinthian-Casuals, and, Too Good to Go Down, the rarely-told story of how relegation in the mid-1970s enabled the modern-day Manchester United to emerge.

NORWICH CITY THE CANARIES
PREVIEW 36
Norwich are winless in their last 19 Premier League away games in London, drawing six.
FROM THE DUGOUT
“[AGAINST BURNLEY] OUR ATTITUDE WAS REACTIVE, AND NOT PROACTIVE AND WE INVITED PRESSURE IN THE FIRST 15 MINUTES. WE WERE ONE STEP TOO LATE.”
It looks like we are in for a fast start today with Norwich’s league games this season, seeing 12 goals scored in the opening 30 minutes of the match (four goals scored, eight goals conceded) - no side has seen more in this time (Manchester City are also on 12). Crystal Palace’s home form has greatly improved, with Roy Hodgson’s side having avoided defeat in their last five league games at Selhurst Park - prior to this run Palace had lost five of eight. If Hodgson manages to earn a point or three today, it will only be the third time in the Premier League that the south Londoners have avoided a home defeat in six games. Norwich may not be feeling
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
too confident today with the Canaries joining Aston Villa as the only side in the league to not have earned a point away from home. And despite possessing the league’s jointthird top scorer in Teemu Pukki – who has been involved in 89% of their goals so far - Norwich have just three away strikes to their name in their last 13 Premier League games away from Carrow Road. A win for either side today will go a long way in preventing a concerning stat for both sides from continuing, with at least one of the Canaries or Eagles being relegated in every Premier League season the pair have met - Palace in 1992/93, both sides in 1994/95 and 2004/05, and Norwich in 2013/14 and 2015/16.
28.09.2019
Pukki has taken 36% of Norwich’s 59 shots, which is a Premier League-high ratio for this season.

ORCHESTRATOR: EMILIANO BUENDÍA 40
Emiliano Buendía has been used in two positions this season, with Daniel Farke eventually settling on the Argentine playing down the right-hand side of the attackingmidfield trio, having once tried swapping him and Todd Cantwell. The 22-year-old has completed the most dribbles for the Canaries so far this season, with those runs key in Norwich transitioning the play from midfield to Teemu Pukki as quickly as possible. Buendía’s creativity has seen him provide four assists for his teammates, the joint-second most in the Premier League this season – one via a corner, one from a cross
and two from throughballs demonstrating versatility and his threat to Palace. As with all main creative sparks, you have to take the rough with the smooth, with Buendía having lost possession 24 times, which is 12 occasions more than teammate Cantwell in second. Assists

TARGET THE FULL-BACKS Daniel Farke has utilised 4-2-3-1 in every single league game, with the personnel barely changing. The area that the Canaries manager has tinkered the most with comes in the form of the pair that shields the defence [Appearances: Tom Trybull (4), Kenny McLean (3), Moritz Leitner (3) & Alexander Tettey (2)]. Norwich favour their left-hand side when it comes to building attacks with 46% of their offensive charges coming down the side which usually homes left-back, Jamal Lewis, and left attackingmidfielder, Todd Cantwell.

However, Lewis, despite attempting the most dribbles for the Canaries this season (24), has only successfully completed 14 of them. Only fellow full-back, Max Aarons (11), has failed to complete more dribbles than Lewis. Farke utilises his full-backs in a way similar to Liverpool’s Andrew

Robertson and Trent AlexanderArnold. And although Aarons will more than likely be injured for our game today, if the Eagles encourage the fullbacks up before capitalising on an unsuccessful dribble, they should be able to exploit the space left in behind.

When playing at Carrow Road, Norwich look to their short passing game, averaging 333 passes per game. However, away from home this drops to 309 short passes, with long balls increasing by eight to 57 and crosses almost halving to 10 from the usual 18 when at home. The amount of goals conceded in the Canaries’ record home defeat, in the infamous game against Colchester United in August 2009. Norwich had been relegated to League One under Bryan Gunn, and met United in the opening game of the season, when they were managed by Paul Lambert. Fans were so infuriated by the result that some ran on the pitch to throw their season tickets at Gunn, who was subsequently sacked with Lambert taking his place.

The number of different nationalities Norwich have had as manager. That said, City had never had a manager outside of the British Isles prior to German Daniel Farke taking charge in May 2017.
The furthest round the Canaries have reached in European competitions. City’s famous run in the UEFA Cup in 1993/94 saw a remarkable victory against Bayern Munich in their old Olympic Stadium, becoming the first British team to ever win there. The subsequent 1-1 draw at Carrow Road meant they progressed through to the Third Round before going out to Inter Milan 2-0 on aggregate.

HISTORY We haven’t got a great record away at Arsenal. Our first ever game there saw us on the receiving end of a 7-0 thrashing in the FA Cup in 1934. As they’ve never been outside the top division - and we weren’t in it until 1969 - we didn’t get to play our first league game at Highbury until March 1970. We lost that one, too. I remember many a miserable trip back home from Arsenal since then. Even our most successful team ever managed to concede four-goalsa-game on each of our visits in 1990, 1991 and 1992. These were bad enough results, but the most depressing visit ever to Arsenal, for me, was on the last day of the 1992/1993 season. Having naively celebrated staying up the previous Saturday, we found ourselves having to get a result
because Oldham (who had been way behind us) had managed to beat Villa (who were second) and Liverpool in the space of four days and were now away at Southampton. You know the story. Oldham won their third match of the week 4-3. Palace lost 3-0. Our former hero scored, kissed his Arsenal badge and we were relegated from the Premier League in its inaugural season on goal difference with 49 points. Yep. 49 points! It still hurts and certainly rates as one of my worst away game experiences of all-time. MEMORABLE MATCHES Fortunately we didn’t have to wait too long for our revenge. In October 1994 we were back in the Premier League but hadn’t won any of our first seven games.
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
We’d even lost 6-1 at home to Liverpool. Nobody gave us a chance. But it was a great day. John Salako scored twice, Ian Wright got one back for them but we held on. I felt nearly as happy just five months ago when we finally won at the Emirates on our sixth visit. You have to go through the suffering to really get the full enjoyment of fantastic away days like those two. TRAVEL This is the third of four consecutive away games in London. It’s pretty easy to get to the Emirates on the tube with Arsenal and Finsbury Park close by. Most of us from south of the river tend to use the Victoria line to Highbury and Islington, but you can also get there direct from West Norwood or Clapham Junction on the London Overground.

PUBS AND BEER
47
Arsenal recently announced a partnership with local brewery Camden Town whose beers are made not far from the Emirates just underneath Kentish Town West train station. And they are now available in the stadium bars. With a 20-to-30-minute walk, there’s a good choice of beer in Islington including the Craft Beer Co with a choice of 10 cask beers and a similar range at the Wenlock Arms. The best selection of all is a couple of miles away and is in the real ale paradise of the Southampton Arms in NW5 – the place has 18 handpumps and the best pork pies I’ve ever eaten.
ARSENAL TRIVIA Along with Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, Arsenal are the only other football team named after a building: the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. They were founded by munitions workers and played there until the move north of the river in 1913. FAMOUS ARSENAL FANS There are loads of them. An impressive roster of comedians to match our own: Jack Whitehall, Alan Davies, Matt Lucas and Dennis Pennis (check out some of his celebrity interviews on YouTube). And we can always trump their Piers Morgan with our own Susanna Reid.

“This wouldn’t happen without them; we can never say how grateful we are enough. Our volunteers range from all ages, with the youngest being 13.” That’s the South Norwood community for you: diverse and together. And without those traits, its local independent cinema, Screen25, couldn’t be what it is today. Currently set-up at the Harris Academy, the film house has been through a series of evolutions over a number of years. Originally, before the name ‘Screen25’ had been adopted, it started out as a monthly film club at Stanley Halls in 2015. However, the aim was always to have a more regular event, and through word of mouth and community help, a year later Screen25 evolved into a twice-weekly (up to four-times weekly) setup, and the rebrand from ‘Stanley’s Film Club’ - which was a tribute to local luminary William Stanley – was complete. The reason behind the name change was, again, something to represent the community in which Screen25 found a home, with Marketing Manager, Catriona
Mahmoud, revealing: “It’s a visual logo, so if you look at it you can see the area code SE25. The people around here love their community, love their postcode and become attached to it so we wanted to represent that.” As soon as you come out of Norwood Junction, which is just a five-minute walk from Screen25, it doesn’t take you long to appreciate the different cultures that have made this part of south London their community. Polish supermarkets to Jamaican cuisine, there’s a chance to explore all corners of the globe within a mile or two. And Screen25 looks to represent the area they entertain with the films on offer, with its team putting on screenings such as The Harder They Come from 1972, which is in the history books as the first ever film produced in Jamaica. But the volunteers at Screen25 went one step further - as they tend to do - and for that viewing, which was free to attend, they also made an immersive Jamaican market place and invited in local traders, who were selling all sorts from food to clothes.
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
The screenings and events on offer at Screen25 are as diverse as the community; the recent ‘Pay As You Feel’ community led event - funded by the Mayor of London’s ‘Culture Seeds’ programme - which is all about supporting grassroots projects that see communities lead and evolve their own areas - sees film-goers pay what they feel their experience of the monthly event is worth, with the films chosen via a public vote, making it a truly community-driven event strand. There are also events such as parent and baby screenings, Family Film Clubs, monthly Odyssey Film Clubs celebrating foreignlanguage films, special showings of archive films, alongside their regular programme of mainstream Hollywood releases like Captain Marvel, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Us. All of this is put on with the idea of exposing the community to types of content they wouldn’t necessarily see. The packed film schedule also offers you the potential to share some popcorn with a celebrity, with Creative Director, Katie Brandwood, revealing: “We’ve had plenty big-name
28.09.2019
We have a lot of very loyal members who come every week. We always have a core audience but each week there will be new faces and that’s great to see
51
comedians, television stars and BRIT award-winning musicians and artists, all coming to support their local community cinema, and enjoy seeing everything from Russian thrillers to documentaries.” The future of Screen25 is bright and evolving fast, with an ever-growing fanbase, as well as word of mouth spreading further afield than the local community of South Norwood, with Katie revealing: “We have a lot of very loyal members who come every week. We always have a core audience but each week there will be new faces and that’s great to see. “I attended London Short Film festival at the beginning of the year. They also champion local and emerging talent with their Shorts in the South scheme, where they pair short films with their regular programme’s featurelength films, an example includes a BRIT School production paired with Yorgos Lanthmos’ Academy Award winning The Favourite; I am always scouting and looking for new, exciting films to showcase. “We will be moving venue soon, actually to a smaller place. However, the move will allow us to put on more screenings.” Wherever they’re based, as long as they continue to serve their dedicated community in the heart of SE25, Screen25 will always be more than just a cinema.

The shockwaves generated by that nine-goal hammering at Liverpool were still rippling through Steve Coppell’s squad as September lurched on. The team may have demonstrated character to claim a point at the Dell, but the obliteration on Merseyside had focussed minds in the dugout and boardroom alike. Scouts had been dispatched for defensive recruits with the purse strings suddenly relaxed. David Burke, Gary O’Reilly and Jeff Hopkins must have been aware of the club’s desire to recruit a centre-half, while Coppell and the chairman, Ron Noades, personally ran the rule over a young, moustached goalkeeper establishing his reputation in the Third Division. As it transpired, a move for Nigel Martyn would have to wait, even if a shellshocked Perry Suckling was still suffering sleepless nights over memories of Merseyside. “I’d be drifting off when John Barnes’ freekick would whizz past me in a flash, and I’d wake up,” he later admitted. A return to home comforts might have felt timely had Second Division Leicester City not won the first leg of a Littlewoods Cup tie at
Selhurst Park. Not that there was time to lick new wounds. A few days later, Palace confronted Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest: a side who had finished third the previous season while also claiming the League Cup and Full Members’ Cup. Forest may have arrived with only one league win that season to date and without an injured Stuart Pearce, but a fragile Palace – with Geoff Thomas filling in at left-back – would still have to keep out Lee Chapman, Steve Hodge and Nigel Clough. For Suckling, Burke and Hopkins to emerge with a clean sheet in the autumnal drizzle was a considerable fillip. That the majority in a crowd of 12,899 were also able to celebrate a late winner meant more. The clock had been ticking down when Walker miscued a header, Eddie McGoldrick scurried into space down the right, and there was Wright to dart in ahead of Brian Laws and nod the cross messily beyond Steve Sutton. The win hoisted Palace into 12th place in the fledgling table, though next up was an equally tricky test against Colin Harvey’s Everton, a classy collection of established stars
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
and expensive new additions. Tony Cottee, who had cost a mind-boggling £2m, only began on the bench. Mike Newell, secured from Leicester, had just been called up by England. Retreat a week and this team had topped the division. And yet here was Andy Gray capitalising upon Pat Nevin’s poorly placed pass to surge through the centre and supply Mark Bright. Neville Southall may have denied the striker his first goal of the campaign, but Wright improvised to tap in the rebound before Everton could recover. Suckling would tip an outrageous attempt from Kevin Sheedy on to the bar, but the sight of Gray sending Alan Pardew scuttling all alone into enemy territory to ram home a second before the interval had even Coppell pinching himself on the bench. Newell’s riposte meant little with the visitors unable to recover those two goals in eight minutes. Palace have only beaten Everton once at Selhurst Park in the 30 years since. By the end of September 1989, a team who had appeared broken at Anfield a few weeks earlier were in ninth place, four points off the top.

PALACE FOR LIFE
Luka Milivojevic was joined by teammate Vicente Guaita and Lucy Gillett from Crystal Palace Women to visit Tweeddale Primary School for a special assembly with the Palace for Life Foundation. The three Palace stars arrived to a wall of noise and excitement, walking out in front of almost 400 children at the Sutton school to rapturous cheers and applause. The children were invited to ask the players questions about their lives what motivates them, with each of the players also sharing key pieces of advice. Palace captain Milivojevic said: “I really enjoyed meeting the children today and answering their questions. It was nice to find out more about them and share some stories about when I
was young. Spending time with young fans is an important part of our job, it was great to see them all smiling and enjoying themselves.” The two ‘keepers, Guaita and Gillett, then took on a group of the children in a quiz all about Palace and healthy eating, designed to help educate the children about one of the Foundation’s key objectives: healthy lives. Speaking afterwards, Guaita said: “This kind of day is really important. Firstly, to dedicate this time to the kids, as you can see how much it matters to them but also to show that the players are real people and they’re real human beings and if you work hard enough you can be a footballer one day.” One of the children, aged nine, was excited to be involved.

She said: “I was really nervous at first because I didn’t know what it was going to be like, but when I asked my question it felt amazing, it was a once in a lifetime chance and the players were so nice!”

58
Coming away from the catch-up with Crystal Palace Under-23s player Jacob Mensah, there was an overriding feeling that it was important to get across what a friendly character Mensah is to deal with; an absolute pleasure to join for a cuppa in the Academy Training Ground canteen. Perhaps it feels a tad clichéd to suggest a young footballer, representing the Eagles, was a pleasure; almost as if it is a given that anyone interviewing a youth team player would look to suggest that their subject was anything but a grounded and genuine individual. But Mensah, waiting patiently for us to arrive despite all his teammates having already gone home after training for a wellearned rest, the centre-back gave no sense of being inconvenienced by our interview. Roughly six months have passed since Mensah signed from non-league outfit Ramsgate, and after catching the tail end of the 2018/19 season, the defender has had a full pre-season, enabling him to give himself every chance of success for the 2019/20 campaign which is well underway. He begins with the adaption he’s gone through since jumping up the football pyramid: “It’s the everyday cycle; constantly having to be on it. Long gone are the Tuesday and Thursday night training sessions and that’s it for the week. It’s
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
28.09.2019
interesting to see how a professional works in the environment full-time. “Little bits of my game have needed to be fine-tuned; I’ve had to work on are things like my short passing but that’s coming on now, bit by bit, day by day.” The transition from non-league to Professional Development League has been a smooth one thanks to the environment Mensah has joined: “All of my teammates helped my settle in; they really are a good bunch. Shawsy [Richard Shaw] has been huge in helping me get up to speed with everything. With him being an ex-centre-back it’s a double bonus for me, learning from his as a manager but also as someone who played in my position. “From the tactical side of things Shawsy has really helped with my passing and positional awareness as a centre-back; I’ve taken all that on board and I’m working on those aspects, so I’m excited to see where I’ll be in six months’ time.” Laughing, Mensah tells us that Shaw isn’t allowed in the U23s’ WhatsApp group before replying: “Anonymous” when we quizzed him over which player is on the receiving end of most of the jokes in the inner sanctum.
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
We both then imagine what it is like in the Eagles’ first-team WhatsApp group and up crops Gary Cahill’s name; a player who has already made a huge impression in south London, and particularly on Mensah, with the defender saying: “Gary Cahill is such a good role model. I’d like to ask him how he copes with the nerves. How do you deal with walking out in front of 50,000 people?” Mensah reveals he still gets nerves pre-match but channels them in a way we imagine someone like Cahill does, too: “It’s natural to get nerves, but how you direct them is key; put them towards how you play, your effort levels around the pitch.” The 19-year-old closes out the final sips of his cuppa in the canteen with his aims for the season, which mainly focus around becoming a regular starter for Shaw’s U23s. And with a mindset like the one Mensah goes on to reveal, you wouldn’t bet against the centre-half achieving it: “You’ve got to stay positive. I don’t feel negative towards things like not being selected to start because there are ways around it. I’m in a professional environment so I’ve got to remain focussed and always be prepared to come on, make my mark and persevere.”

FIRST-EVER WOMEN’S FOOTBALL WEEKEND The FA have announced plans for the inagural Women’s Football Weekend, with 16-17 November set to be another landmark moment in the growing popularity of the women’s game. The weekend falls during the men’s international break. Therefore, Eagles missing the Selhurst Park buzz that weekend can get their red and blue fix by heading down to Hayes Lane, the home of Bromley F.C., where Palace’s women’s side will be welcoming the London City Lionesses
on Sunday 17th November for a 2pm kick-off. General Manager for the club, Paula Johnson, welcomed the initiative from the FA and is looking forward to seeing as many new faces for the Eagles’ home game that weekend: “The players love it when they have new fans come in. We see people come through the gates and because we play at Bromley’s home ground - which is quite an impressive venue - the kids’ little faces as it opens up in front of them and then they realise just how close they are to the pitch, are a picture.

“Both teams come into the bar post-match, have their meal, interact with the fans, take photos and speak to supporters. It’s a real community and I’m hopeful we can attract some lifelong fans.” The Eagles currently have two points from four games in the Championship, and are going well in the Continental Cup after a 3-2 win against Lewes on the opening matchday of the competition. Stay tuned to the club’s social media channels and website for further details on ticket information.

PALACEXI IN TIME
THE KETTERING FIVE In November 1928 Palace played Kettering Town at Selhurst Park in the First Round of the FA Cup. The Northamptonshire club lost 2-0 but such was their performance that during the coming months Palace signed five of their players. First to move to south London was the goalkeeper James Imrie and forwards George Charlesworth and Andrew Dunsire in March 1929; the trio were then joined in the summer by defender George Barrie and centre-forward Peter Simpson. THE 90 MINUTES It was not until the fifth game of the season that Simpson was given his debut. However, it didn’t start well with the visitors taking an early lead. Simpson made his mark, though, equalising 20 minutes after the Eagles fell behind by firing home a cross from Albert Harry after initially setting up his teammate for the cross. Palace started the secondhalf quickly and six minutes after half-time Simpson had his second, heading home another cross, this time from George Clarke.
The dream debut hat-trick arrived halfway through the second-half, with Simpson heading home after a goalmouth scramble. As the full-time whistle approached the Canaries pulled one back but the Palace defenders held firm for the victory and made sure Simpson’s debut hat-trick wasn’t in vain. HAT-TRICK DEBUTS FOR THE PALACE Simpson is the third and last Palace player to score a hattrick on his first-team debut. Charles McGibbon managed this feat after signing from New Brompton (now Gillingham) in the home game against Brighton & Hove Albion on 19th September 1908; Palace won 4-0. Ted Smith achieved his debut hat-trick at Upton Park on 30th December 1911 as the Eagles ran out 6-1 winners. Ted is second in the club’s all-time scoring charts behind Simpson. POST-PALACE Simpson scored in his final game for the club in April 1935, leaving south London with 165
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
goals in 195 appearances, which included 20 hat-tricks (two of those arriving in one game). The Palace fans’ favourite left for West Ham as injuries were beginning to take their toll. And before the outbreak of the Second World War he also played for Reading - naturally Simpson scored against the Eagles. Upon retirement, the former Palace player still lived in the area and ran a newsagent and confectionery business situated near West Croydon, and it appears that the building on Wellesley Parade is still trading as that these days. MOST-FACED OPPONENTS Norwich City are the club we have faced most often in league and major cup competitions, with the total currently sitting at 132. This is made up of 106 in the Premier and Football League, six cup ties and 20 Southern League games. The first was at Norwich’s original ground at Newmarket Road on 20th October 1906 and Palace have played at all three of the Canaries’ home grounds while they have visited three of our four, missing out on Herne Hill.

PADDY McCARTHY
Since my last column, we’ve had a few games. Going back to Burnley, we knew that they were going to be 4-4-2 and aggressive, but we also wanted our lads to match that physical ability. We also wanted them to be brave in possession and throughout large spells we dominated the ball. There were lots of encouraging things to take despite the 2-1 defeat. Next, we travelled up to Birmingham on the morning of the game, and that wasn’t ideal for our preparation due to getting stuck in traffic. However, in terms of the 90 minutes, it ultimately all came down to individual errors but that sort of thing is expected at this level. That being said, I was pleased that at half-time when I spoke to the lads about not throwing the towel in, the reaction was fantastic. We were on top of the game despite trailing 3-1 but unfortunately couldn’t get an important second goal.
Wigan Athletic were next and we dominated in the first-half but found ourselves 1-0 down. The performance levels were really pleasing and we turned things around to lead 2-1. We were reduced to 10-men and this is another learning curve for the team. Unfortunately, a deflected free-kick saw Wigan level. Looking at our most recent game, the 3-2 defeat to Cardiff City, we actually started with probably the best 45 minutes I’ve ever seen from a Crystal Palace Under-18s team. We got a well-deserved goal but really should’ve gone in with a more comfortable scoreline. Fionn Mooney finished off a superb move to make it 2-0. He’s an Under-16s player but he was exceptional throughout the game with his creative passing. Then it was just one of those mad spells that happen in football, and in five minutes Cardiff had drawn

level and that cost us with them eventually getting a late winner. I’d like to mention a player who has started all our games so far this season: Aidan Steele. He’s an intelligent player, who works his socks off in central midfield and helps the team control possession. I’ve enjoyed working with him and he’s got a real chance of making it. However, it’s a really competitive spot with Denzelle Olopade, Kamari Parris, Kevin Gonzales and Rowan Smith all capable of playing there. In fact, we’ve even got Malachi Boateng who is playing up with the Under-23s who can come back in. Due to the course, I unfortunately won’t be able to attend the team’s game against Coventry City – a match which has probably finished by the time you’ve read this. However, I’ve been in constant communication with Darren Powell and I’m confident the lads will have put in a good performance.

I’ve spent this week away in Geneva at UEFA’s headquarters on a training course for my Pro Licence; it’s been a challenging week with additional work on top of my day-to-day obligations but I know already it’s adding another layer to my coaching skill set.

ELLA RUTHERFORD
I’m excited to see what the Championship has to offer and what is different from the Women’s Super League. I’ll be keeping up with my own personal training routine as coming to Palace means I’m going to be part-time rather than full-time like at Bristol. I knew a few of the girls prior to coming due to my early career days with the Millwall Lionesses: Ciara Sherwood, Ashlee Hincks, Jordan Butler and Leeta Rutherford. Palace have given me the opportunity to play with a bit of freedom, get back involved with football as I have had a bit of time out of it and, ultimately, my main aim is to help out this club as I feel they’ve deserved a lot more than the results they’ve been getting.
Without a pre-season, it meant a lot that Dean Davenport trusted me to start my debut against Lewes a couple of weeks back in our draw with them in the league. It was an honour to pull on the red and blue shirt of the club I grew up near. I’ve enjoyed working with Bianca Baptiste in training and in the couple of games we’ve started. As a striker, a right-winger like Bianca is fantastic for me and I’m excited to see how our relationship on the pitch grows as we get to know how each other play. Being amongst the experienced players like Leeta and Ashlee has been great for me. Ash’s injury is a real blow to us, as I had enjoyed our initial link-up play during the Lewes game prior to her having to come off.
CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH CITY
Starting in the next game at Aston Villa, with 90 minutes under my belt, meant I was looking to make an impact having worked off any rustiness against Lewes. However, an injury in the first-half put a stop to that. Despite being injured, I came along to support the team from the stands against Lewes in our Continental Cup game last weekend. The win meant so much to the girls, and we showcased our clinical ability in front of goal, defended well and Rea Laudat’s screamer was a goal that deserved to decide the game. I am hoping to be back available for our league game against Leicester City on Sunday. Leicester have a young squad so I’m expecting a lively and dynamic challenge for us.
73
I was looking forward to return back to my south London roots, so I was delighted that Bristol City and Crystal Palace were able work out a last-minute loan deal agreement for me. It’s great to be back home and back in the community.
