it’s matchday

After our historic win at Leicester City last weekend, Crystal Palace’s first-ever Women’s Super League campaign continues this weekend in South London!

The Eagles now welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to the VBS Community Stadium in Sutton, kicking off at 14:00 BST this afternoon (Sunday, 13th October).

It’s our first match of the season in Sutton – so make sure you get down to support the team and experience our brand new Fanzone, situated just beyond the Collingwood Road Stand at the far side of the stadium.

Opening an hour before kick-off, our new Fanzone is set to be full of fun, games, activities, refreshments and music – the perfect way for the whole family to warm-up ahead of kick-off!

Then, as the action draws near, get behind the team – and be loud, be proud… be Palace!

Good afternoon everybody, and welcome back to the VBS Community Stadium for this afternoon’s Women’s Super League match.

Last weekend was a proud day for this club, and a truly proud day for this group.

We’d been through a bit of a rough start in the Women’s Super League, against two topquality teams in Tottenham and Chelsea. It was a bit of a rude awakening to the intensity of this division – but against Leicester, all our hard work came together, and the players really deserved the three points.

I thought our performance was superb. There were areas we have looked to work on this week, of course, but I was really proud of how the players executed what we asked them to do. It showed, again, how well this group of players reflect, review and then come out onto the pitch and apply information.

Having said that, I’ve already spoken to them about not being too high with the highs, or too low with the lows. We will be keeping our feet firmly on the ground, and working just as hard moving forwards. We learn more and more about the group every week – but now, we’ve got something to go after, because the players know they can do it.

Today we face a talented Brighton & Hove Albion side, who have started the season very well. We know all about their attacking strengths, but we want to pose them problems too.

We’ve approached the game the same as any other in terms of our preparation. The girls have been working hard in training, which is great to see, and I know they will apply themselves again this afternoon.

Finally, I want to thank you, the fans. You deserve great credit for your support as we have begun this journey together. There have been

so many of you at our first three matches; a special mention to those of you who made the long journey to Leicester to see our first win on the road.

I know we will have another big crowd this afternoon for our first game of the season at Sutton. Your support means a lot to the group, and we’ll do everything to get a result for you. We have shown great signs of progression, great signs of improvement – and that’s the path that we want to continue on.

Thank you for your support,

Laura

Good afternoon everybody, and for the first time this season, welcome back to the VBS Community Stadium for today’s Women’s Super League match with Brighton.

Ihope you’re all as proud as we are after that fantastic win against Leicester last weekend. It was a real team effort and getting the three points away from home feels like a massive boost for us.

We’ve been working so hard in training since the start of pre-season, and it was great to see everything come together on the pitch. Annabel was brilliant with her two goals, but it was also a collective effort defensively –everyone put in a shift to keep Leicester at bay and secure that clean sheet.

That win was important for our momentum, but as we know, there’s no time to rest on our laurels. As Laura has said, we never get too high with the highs, or too low with the lows. We’ve got a massive game coming up – our first home game at the VBS Community Stadium against Brighton.

It’s always a special occasion playing at home, and even more so against rivals. There’s a certain energy and pride that comes with these games, and we know how much it means to all of you who will be there supporting us.

Brighton are a strong side, and they’ll be a tough challenge, but we’re

confident in our ability. The key for us will be to stay focused, stick to our game plan, and make sure we capitalise on our chances when they come. We’ve got the quality to take the game to them, and with your support behind us, we’ll be doing everything we can to get a result.

We’re excited to play in front of you all, and hopefully, we can build on last weekend’s performance to make it a memorable day at Sutton. Let’s keep that momentum going together – come on you Eagles!

Thank you for your support!

Aimee

last time out

Two goals from Annabel Blanchard sealed a historic first Barclays Women’s Super League win for Palace away at Leicester City.

Palace were mostly in control for the first-half of the game, dominating the ball whilst limiting to Leicester to very few chances.

Katie Stengel managed to fashion two good chances for herself, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Leicester ended the first-half the stronger team, with Jutta Rantala going close just before the half-time whistle.

10 minutes into the second-half and it was Palace who opened the scoring at the King Power Stadium. Stengel and Blanchard combined brilliantly on the edge of the box, and Blanchard was there to sweep into the bottom corner for the Eagles’ first goal of the season.

Things got even better for Palace on 68 minutes, when the referee pointed to the penalty spot after Lexi Potter was brought down following a rampaging run.

Blanchard stepped up and smashed her penalty into the bottom-left corner, doubling hers and Palace’s tally.

The result earned Palace their first ever win in the WSL and indeed English Women’s football’s top-flight.

“I’m so proud of the group. I’m proud of everyone involved with the club.

“We’ve been through a bit of a rough start in the WSL, so I thought today the players really deserved the three points. I thought our performance was on top and the group really deserved that after everything they’ve been through.

“We had a rude awakening to the intensity [of the WSL] – but I thought today we were outstanding.”

Annabel Blanchard

“It’s a great feeling. We’ve been working really, really hard in training. Results haven’t always gone our way, but each week we’ve been improving our performance. To see it come together today was the main thing.

“It’s good when you’ve got a great group around you. The staff are always supportive. One result doesn’t define us – it’s a long season with plenty of games to go even after today. We won today, but the focus is now on Brighton.”
