2014 Mission

Chapter Commitment: On behalf of the members of Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter, it is with great pleasure we extend our support and commitment to actively engage with the American Cancer Society (ACS). Over the years, our chapter has donated countless volunteer hours and funding in support of ACS programs and activities. We know that cancer touches the lives of so many family, friends and sorors. We applaud the American Cancer Society for their efforts to eradicate this disease and ease the burden of those living with cancer. Our chapter will continue fostering strong partnerships to help educate the public and raise awareness about cancer. With every soror working together, we can make a difference to help save lives and empower others to fight. Crystal L. Pruitt, Chapter Basileus

Tactics: Incorporate opportunities to educate chapter members and the local community via workshops and planned events. Support signature ACS events to raise awareness in the fight against cancer

Chapter Recognition: The chapter activities are deserving of recognition because the ACS signature events have been used to partner with local Greek organizations, the chapter AKAdemy youth program (including parents) resulting in a wider reach for greater engagement and impact. Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

AKA Sorority Members Make Strides Against Breast Cancer St. Petersburg—Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event focused on fighting breast cancer and is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events designed to connect communities and honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness, and fund the fight to end the disease forever. The Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has supported the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event for the past three (3) years and participated in the county and statewide planning sessions.

The American Cancer Society has more than three million volunteers and they save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. In the state of Florida, this event has been branded as the “Put on Your Pink Bra” campaign. The campaign is designed to empower women across the state to wear individualized pink bras in support of the fight against breast cancer and as a personal symbol of their breast cancer journeys. The campaign sets the stage for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event held in October of each year. Making Strides is a noncompetitive 5K walk to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer and to provide hope 2011 to all people facing the disease.

Local AKA Chapter Joins MSABC Walk October 2011 — Sorors met the night prior to the walk to decorate their pink bras and joined over 1,000 walkers the next morning. Several chapter members participated in the Cancer Walk. They raised a total of $720 by collecting donations at sorority meeting and asking family, friends and co-workers. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer it is a celebration of survivorship, an occasion to express hope, and a shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people. The ZUO fundraising efforts enables the American Cancer Society to save lives by: Helping people stay well by educating and empowering women to live healthy lives and reduce their risk for breast cancer, and to get screening tests such as mammograms to find breast cancer early, when it is easiest to treat. Helping people facing breast cancer get well by providing information, day-to-day help, and emotional support to guide them through every step of their breast cancer experience. Finding cures by investing in and conducting research that leads to groundbreaking discoveries into breast cancer's causes and cures.

“I enjoyed be part of something so important! I will always support such a worthwhile cause.”

Fighting back by working with legislators to support laws that help fight breast cancer and help all women get access to screenings and care.

Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

AKA AKAdemy Expands Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign In the 2012 and 2013, the sorors extended the MSABC event to the chapter EYL and AKA AKAdemy program (girls age 11 through 16) and held a larger bra decorating party. What a fun and creative way to get our young girls engaged and educated on the importance of breast cancer awareness. October 2012—AKA members and young ladies from the AKA AKAdemy met prior to the walk to decorate their pink bras. They joined thousands of supporters and breast cancer survivors to walk to raise awareness. The AKAdemy raised approximately $300 by collecting donations at sorority meeting, asking family, friends and co-workers. The sorors also partnered with Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority to prep ribbons which were handed out at the event as well as at the Buccaneers football game.

Supporting Relay for Life

2013 ZUO/AKA Relay for Life Team

Program Overview During the GLTTS administration, the chapter continued the partnership with ACS and collaborated with the AKA AKAdemy and the members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Relay for Life of South St. Pete to participate in the annual ACS Relay for Life. The ACS is the nationwide community based voluntary organization dedicated to elimination of cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives from cancer and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

ZUO Chapter Health Committee Members

In 2011, 2012 and 2013, ZUO supported the relay and sold pizza for donations during the all night party. With sorors participating in the Survivors Lap – it was truly a celebration of their personal victory over cancer. The Several participated in the silent and somber Luminaria Ceremony to honor those affected by cancer and to remember loved ones lost. Our group of 50 to 75 adults and youth camp out around the track and take turns walking the during the 24-hour event. The organizers provided entertainment (games and activities) and the annual event draws approximately 500 people and 35 to 40 teams from the community.
