5 Reasons Summer is the Best Time For a Well-Child Check-Up

Page 1

It’s a visit with a pediatrician to assess your child’s current health, screen for potential issues, and bring them up to date on immunizations. It may include: overall physical exam, height and weight screening, immunizations, motor skills and reflexes check, scoliosis screening, psychological/behavioral check, etc. The nature of the exam varies based on health concerns relevant to your child’s age group.

You won’t have to worry about your child missing school for a doctor’s appointment. If your child needs treatment for an illness or injury, you don’t need to worry about how it will affect their schooling. Even if your child is taking summer school classes, it’s still easier to schedule around them.

Many schools require students to have physicals before the school year begins. They often also require updated immunizations, which you can take care of at the well-child visit. Tackling these requirements over the summer gives you plenty of time to provide any requested records or address problems with documentation ahead of time.

If your child expects to play a sport or join an athletic team, they may need to pass a physical to join or remain a member. Non-sport activities like marching band also rely on good health and stamina, so a summer checkup gives them time to train if they’re falling behind. For kids that are not involved in physically demanding activities, a summer visit can tell parents whether they need to make changes or encourage activity to prepare them for gym classes, etc.

Schools are full of kids in close contact, so germs spread easily. Summer immunization ensures that by the time school starts again, your child’s immune system will have developed appropriate immunity against certain illnesses. This also protects other students and teachers by reducing the chance that your child will unknowingly carry and spread illness.

Back-to-school time tends to be busy for pediatricians, making it harder to get an appointment. Busy staff do their best to attend to patients fairly, but a tight schedule may mean you have less time to ask questions or discuss concerns. Taking care of the well-child check-up before this time helps ease the burden on your children’s doctor and nurses; it’s a perfect opportunity to give back.

As summer approaches, contact your pediatrician’s office and let them know that you want to schedule a well-child visit. If you have specific concerns about your child’s health, mention them at this time so that the scheduler can make a note to address it. If you do not currently have a pediatrician for your child, summer is an ideal time to get them set up with a pediatrician at Crystal Run Healthcare.
