Job Outlook: U.S. College Hiring to Increase 8.3 Percent Employers plan to hire 8.3% more new college graduates from the Class of 2015 for their U.S. operations than they did from the Class of 2014, according to NACE’s Job Outlook 2015 report. This year, more than 25% of respondents report that they also recruit college graduates for positions outside of the United States. The hiring projection for international positions is expected to increase by 3.2% for Class of 2015 graduates. Overall, employers plan to hire 7.5% more graduates from the Class of 2015 for both U.S. and international positions than they did from the Class of 2014. In terms of hiring expectations, the largest group of respondents expects to bring in more new college grads than they did last year, closely followed by those who expect to hold their college hiring levels steady. The main reasons employers cited for increasing their college hiring numbers are business need/company growth and to account for anticipated retirements. By broad category, graduates of the business, engineering, computer and information sciences, and math and sciences disciplines are most in demand at the bachelor’s degree level, with finance, accounting, and computer science the individual majors most in demand among employers. Data for the Job Outlook 2015 survey was collected from August 11, 2014, through October 7, 2014. A total of 260 surveys were returned for a 25% response rate. EMPLOYER ON-THE-LINE Best Quotes of 2014 Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) Marie Houtwed, National Bank Examiner “The OCC is looking for highly qualified and motivated candidates. We believe that WSU Shockers possess these qualities and are eager to be a part of one of the nation’s most important economic sectors.” Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers Ben Hesse, Director of Training “Find something for which you’ve developed a passion and have a vision for where you want it to lead. You might not score that executive position right out of college, but, in time, hard work and believing in yourself can get you there. Many companies are now led by those who humbly learned every position and poured their heart into each, all the way to the top.” Via Christi Health Lori Ellison-Zuercher, Sourcing Specialist, HR Talent Team “Here’s the truth: quality matters. As the largest healthcare provider in Kansas we must adhere to our core values and our desire to offer “the right care, for every person, every time.” We do our research when we decide to develop a relationship with, say, a university. Graduation rates, reputation, etc. all make a difference in deciding where we plan to invest our time and manpower. We look to align ourselves with establishments who embrace excellence, and WSU consistently demonstrates high quality output.” The Sherwin Williams Company Jaclyn Hennessy, Area Recruitment Specialist “When considering a position look at the overall compensation and benefits package they are offering. Does the company provide a 401k or retirement options, vacation days, health care? These factors can add value to the position and may help in the decision-making process.” OLC Global Corrina Webber, Vice President of Sales - Teleservices “We have a corporate structure and a family atmosphere. We have an energy and passion about what we do. We truly believe that our employees are our most valuable asset, and that when they join the OLC Global team, they become part of our family.” Rusty Eck Ford, Inc. Tanya Wickersham, HR Director “We obviously have sales people and mechanics at the dealership, but we also have a five-person marketing department, a ten-person accounting/payroll department, ten finance employees, and one HR person.” Shawnee County Department of Corrections “Do your homework! Know as much about the position/company that you are interviewing for as possible. It is always refreshing as an employer to interview someone who took the time to research the organization they wish to become a part of. Doing so shows initiative and that is what an employer wants to see.”

Bright Professional Blog by Vivian Rohleder The Importance of Your First Job Your first position after graduating is more important than you may think. It is the first of a series of steps into your career path and towards a dream job. The experiences and skills you gain in that job will prepare you to take on new challenges in line with your interests, knowledge and abilities. While it is common for individuals to transition careers or industries throughout their lifespan, your past experiences and positions are the key to your next job. Thus, instead of peppering the industry with resume applications, take a moment to plan your career path. This can be done in broad terms rather than listing specific positions. Think about the experience needed for your dream job and how you would progress towards it. Consider the skills, projects, background, and industry knowledge necessary to hold the position you want. Once you have a clear vision of your goal, work your way down to the kind of positions you would hold before then. This is your projected career plan to succeed in each position you hold: 1. Strive to exude professionalism through displaying competency, honesty, integrity, and accountability. 2. Honor your commitments, be polite and respectful, and always be prepared for meetings and appointments. 3. Volunteer for additional projects or tasks and reach out for additional responsibility when the opportunity arises. 4. Build relationships with team members and company employees, as well as members of the community. Treat each position as an opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and experience. By doing so, you will be able to have a direct impact on how your career progresses.
Student Spotlight: Using Career Services to Propel Your Job Search
Caree Counr Cornselor er
Vivian Rohleder, WSU Career Services Career Counselor James Guguei is a WSU student graduating this December, 2014. He has been working with a career counselor this semester to prepare for the job search. Recently, he shared his experience and advice for other graduating students. How has Career Services helped you for the job search? “I was first connected to a career counselor after a missed appointment. She contacted me to check in and offered to help me with the job search process. I found this experience to be immensely more beneficial than any assistance I could have hoped for. Initially, we worked via distance appointments and e-mails. I sent the career counselor my resume and cover letter and she was quick to provide insightful feedback. Once I found positions I wanted to apply for, I forwarded the job description to her for guidance on how to tailor my resume and cover letter to each particular job. After lining up a few interviews, I asked my career counselor to meet and practice my interviewing skills. This opportunity to practice my answers has been a great help. This whole process has helped my confidence immensely.” What has been most helpful working with a career counselor? “I cannot pick just one thing. The thoughtful comments and suggestions from the resume review ensured my resume would be looked at by recruiters. I was referred to a position through Hire-a-Shocker that turned out to be a very good match for me, so I applied and was selected to interview with the hiring manager. Now my interviewing skills have improved and I am prepared for my upcoming interviews.” Do you have any advice for graduating students who are looking for jobs? “If you are unsure about what jobs to look for, go to Career Services. A career counselor will give you direction in your job search and advice about how to apply for jobs. Make sure you have your resume and cover letter reviewed by a career counselor. Come to career services to practice your interviewing skills. We do not get that kind of education in the classroom.”
From College to Career Congratulations to all WSU graduating students! It is an exciting time in your life, as you transition from being a student to a new role as a working professional. At Career Services, we are happy to help you transition to your new role, assist with the job search and application process, review your resume or cover letter, and practice interviewing skills with you.
