Building Shockers, Building Professionals Issue 04 / 09.30.13

What Career Services Can Do For YOU! We provide services for all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as WSU alumni. All services are geared toward helping Shockers become professionals. A wide range of services includes career counseling, job search help, resume critiques, mock interviews, networking opportunities, career fairs, and interview days. Services are free to current students and for one year after graduation. A minimal fee is charged for counseling appointments after that time. The majority of WSU students work either part-time or full-time while completing a degree. Working in an office, care facility, library, museum, bank, hotel, or restaurant helps to build transferable skills that will be used in all jobs. Skills such as communication, critical thinking, leadership, work ethic, time management, and tech literacy are expected by employers. All students and alumni have access to the online recruiting system, Hire-a-Shocker, through their myWSU account. They can post a resume, search for jobs, contact employers, sign up for on-campus interviews, and preview career-related events. The variety of paid experiences may include career-related activities; however, all work experience leads to refined people skills and technical skills. Career Services’ counselors offer resume through interview help, so each student can present a resume that best showcases his or her skills and accomplishments. They also prepare students to talk about transferable skills in the interview. Transferable skills are also known as employability skills, softs skills, or workplace skills. Career Services is part of Campus Life and University Relations.

Employer On-the-Line...By Jeanne Hopkins SendThisFile, Inc. Rick Ralston, President

Would you tell us a little bit about your organization and how it got started? While working on his PhD in Electrical Engineering at WSU, our founder, Aaron Freeman, recognized a need in the Internet technology marketplace to securely transfer larger electronic files than typical email systems could manage. Since then the SendThisFile business has continued to evolve and grow and now serves clients in more than 170 countries and serves some of the largest companies and governments in the world. For ten years we have been serving in a variety of industries including banking, healthcare, energy, advertising, engineering, architecture, legal and many more. Do you have WSU alums working for you? And if so, what were their majors and what are their job titles? SendThisFile has a rich heritage with WSU alums! In addition to Aaron, many of our other key roles are held by alums. John Stephens is our VP of Operations and Scott Sexton is our VP of Technology. Both majored in Computer Science. Dan Ziegelbein is another Computer Science grad and is our Chief Architect. Our Senior Brand Manager is Alex Hund who holds a WSU MBA with a specialization in marketing. What is unique about your organization? We strive to take full advantage of the Internet’s robust capabilities. We use video conferencing technologies on a daily basis and have partnered with companies like IBM and Oracle to create a totally virtual work environment. This has allowed us to build a truly global team, while still preserving our Wichita roots and culture. Do you have a job search or resume tip to share? For a job candidate, our recommendation would be to do your research. Take some time and learn about the company you are interviewing with. An interview is a two-way street and it is critical that you learn if the company will be a good fit for you. Plus, by doing some research, you will certainly interview more effectively. It is an indicator of initiative and motivation. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? SendThisFile is a perfect example of why Wichita is such a great place to start and grow a business. Wichita is an entrepreneurial hub for a variety of industries and these Wichita startups are always looking for talent! There are many organizations supporting entrepreneurship. For example, we have the QuantumLeap entrepreneurs expo coming up in October along with the 10-year anniversary of the Great Plains Capital Conference. There is also the Youth Entrepreneurs breakfast series, and Start Up Weekends. Get involved, stay connected, and of course, Go Shockers!

Careers Center Stage: Actuaries

Actuaries analyze the financial costs of risk and uncertainty. They use mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to assess the risk that an event will occur and to help businesses and clients develop policies that minimize the cost of that risk.

Basic Duties: • Compile statistical data and other pertinent information for further analysis • Estimate the probability and likely economic cost of an event such as death, sickness, an accident, or a natural disaster • Design, test, and administer insurance policies, investments, pension plans, and other business strategies to minimize risk and maximize profitability • Produce charts, tables, and reports that explain their calculations and proposals Most actuaries work at insurance companies, where they help design policies and determine the premiums that should be charged for each policy. They must ensure that the premiums are profitable, yet competitive with other insurance companies. Actuaries in the insurance industry typically specialize in a specific field of insurance, such as health, life, or property and casualty insurance. Some actuaries apply their expertise to financial matters outside of insurance. For example, they develop investment strategies that manage risks and maximize returns for companies or individuals. Some actuaries help companies develop broad policies and strategies that assess risks across all areas of business, a practice known as enterprise risk management. Pension and retirement benefits actuaries design, test, and evaluate company pension plans to determine if the expected funds available in the future will be enough to ensure payment of future benefits. They must report the results of their evaluations to the federal government. Pension actuaries also help businesses develop other types of retirement plans, such as 401Ks, and healthcare plans for retirees.

Social Media in Your Job Search Social media is a great way to stay in touch with friends and relatives, but it also can be a useful tool in your job search. Employers are using social media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to both promote their organizations and connect with potential job candidates. While social media can help you research employers (critical to your job-search success), be sure to use it more actively—as a way to connect with potential employers. By following a few basic tips, you can use social media to get in front of hiring managers. Get Noticed There are a few key points to keep in mind when using social media as a job-search tool. Create a Profile That Gives a Positive Impression of You Think of it as your online resume: What do you want it to say about you? Hiring managers can get a stronger sense of who you are, and if you’re a potentially good fit for their company, through your profile. Be Aware of the Keywords You Include in Your Profile This is particularly true for sites focused on professional networking, such as LinkedIn. Many employers do keyword searches to find profiles that contain the skill sets they’re seeking in potential hires. Don’t Include Photos, Comments, or Information You Wouldn’t Want a Potential Employer to See

176

Don’t Mix Personal With Professional The social media you use in your job search has to present you as a potential employee—not as a friend. Follow the rules for writing a resume.

CONTACTS!

Make Sure Your Profile Is Error-Free You wouldn’t offer up a resume rife with misspellings, would you? Choose Appropriate Contact Information Your e-mail address or Twitter handle should be professional—a simple variation on your name, perhapsrather than suggestive or offensive. Connect Many organizations have embraced social media as an extension of their hiring practices, and provide information that you can use to research the organization and connect with hiring managers and recruiters. - Check your college/university’s social media groups: Many times, employers join such groups. - Check social media groups that are focused around your field of interest or career. - Search for the social media pages, profiles, and videos of organizations that interest you. Many organizations post job descriptions, information about salaries, and more. - Ask questions. Even something as broad as “Is anyone hiring in [industry]?” may bring responses, and asking questions about a specific organization—“What’s it like to work at Company X?” can give you insight into the organization and its culture.

Stay Connected Keep in touch with recruiters or other decision makers you may interact with in cyberspace. There may not be an available opportunity at their organization right now, but that could change, and you want to be considered when it does. Finally, in addition to maintaining your network, use social media to build your network. Don’t just establish a social media presence—work it. Reach out. Interact. You will get out of social media what you put into it.
