My name is Chris Parks (AKA Pale Horse) I am a freelance graphic designer and digital illustrator with a small studio where I create my work and have been hosting gallery exhibits for the past 3 years. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been fortunate enough to work for some killer clients in the apparel, entertainment and action sports market industries including: Iron Fist Clothing, Vans, Nike, Etnies, Globe, Red Bull, The Cartoon Network and many more. COULD YOU SHARE WITH US THE HISTORY BEHIND WWW.PALEHORSEDESIGN.COM? Pale Horse design originally started under a different name with myself and a partner who is a tattoo artist. We mixed tattooing with a graphic design studio and hosted gallery exhibits with artists that we were into. It was a killer concept and that’s how it all started.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN? I’m not religious, but it’s a Biblical reference. The ‘Pale Horse’ is the fourth horse in ‘the four horsemen of the apocalypse’ story in Revelations. The rider of the ‘Pale Horse’ is said to be ‘Death’.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT VEKTOR GRAPHIK? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? The aesthetic you can achieve with the control and precision of the vector pen tool is like nothing else. It’s definitely a labor of love and I am constantly trying to find ways to improve my craft.

WHAT KIND OF VEKTOR SOFTWARES DO YOU CURRENTLY USE? Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop CS4... Sometimes I bust out Corel Painter when I want to experiment with more painterly imagery.

HOW DO YOU WORK FROM CONCEPT TO THE FINAL ARTWERK? Often times I’ll gather a bunch reference of images on the desired subject. I have some stock photo site accounts that help a lot for grabbing lots of reference. I bring the images into Photoshop, chop ‘em up and build a basic visual that I like. Then I’ll print out the montage large in a faint blue to use a basic guide to draw out the image the way I want it. Then I’ll scan it back in and place it into Illustrator where I spend hours with the pen tool, rendering it all out and coloring it up. If the piece is going to be used for a canvas print, I’ll then place the .ai vector into Photoshop where I add paper textures, patterns and burn in colors for a more organic aesthetic.

WHAT ARE THE PROJEKTS YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Been planning this huge t-shirt show with Hydro74 called ‘Back in Black 2’ (www.backinblackapparel.com) for the past few months. It’s the biggest exhibit I’ve ever put together. 17 top t-shirt designers combining their skills for a live screen printing event her in Tampa Florida. We want this to be the most badass and fun art exhibit / party of the year. We’ve also been working hard on the website and online store element of the show, so fans world-wide can grab these super-limited shirts from the exhibit. Unfortunately this will likely be all over by the time you read this, but we’ll be posting tons of images, interviews and video after the event on May 16th to check out. I’ve also just launched an artist series, stock vector and fonts site called GoldenBlack. (www.thegoldenblack.com) This site will be constantly updated with top-notch illustrations and fonts from artists like Godmachine, Hydro74, Los Fokos, Brian Morris and myself. Stoked to have this up and running. Meanwhile, I’ve been designing pieces for Iron Fist, Globe, Hart & Huntington, Van Halen and others. I also just got a couple t-shirts picked up by Design By Humans. The one called ‘Rhanga’ is a collab with Jimyo and should be available now. The other ‘Gusoku’ should be available soon.

ANY FUTURE PROJEKTS YOU CAN SHARE WITH US? Hmmm... No time in the schedule for planning new stuff yet :) I’m sure I’ll have a list of shit right after the Back in Black 2 show is over and I can breath again.

ANY FAVORITES PROJEKT? I recently created a zombie illustration for Iron Fist Clothing that was for a series of women’s high heels. I love how they turned out and we are currently finishing up two more monsters in the series to release soon. That was a fun one.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Generally, my work is inspired by my love of tattoo art, Japanese culture and horror movies. Also, book stores in Tokyo. It takes armed security to get me out of them when I’m in Japan.

COULD YOU LIST THE 8 THINGS THAT INSPIRING YOU IN YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? Energy drinks, stoner rock, my Mac, books, and magazines

ANY TIPS/TRICKS FOR VEKTORLOVER OUT THERE TO CREATE SUCH A GREAT VEKTOR ARTWERKS LIKE YOURS? When working with the vector pen tool, zoom, zoom, zoom way in and rock out the details with a very fine stroke line, then switch it to the black fill. This is the key to get good detail.

I’m a London based Illustrator/designer who has built a reputation for retro tinged Illustrations & detailed character filled landscapes with UK & international clients in publishing, design, advertising & new media, for everything from book covers to advertising campaigns, & even the odd large scale installation too! Some of my many clients include Barclays, BBC, Computer Arts Magazine, Dorling Kindersley, The Economist, FHM, Maxim, The Observer, Orange, Sunday Times & Vodafone. I’m also currently Deputy Chairman of the UK Association of Illustrators. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Originally I was from near the rural town of Bridport in the UK county of Dorset. For the last 12 years I’ve lived in Greenwich, London.

COULD YOU SHARE WITH US THE HISTORY BEHIND WWW.RODHUNT.COM? I launched my first website in the year 2000 & taught myself Adobe GoLive to create it. It was very basic compared to my current site having learnt a great deal about web design over the years. Back then website portfolios were a relatively new idea, but becoming increasingly important. It was obvious that not having one would impact on getting commissions eventually. Looking back on it now, I wonder how I ever promoted myself without the aid of internet & the easy access that gives commissioners to sourcing artists.

VEKTORJUNKIE IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE INTRODUCED TO A WORLD OF TALENTED VECTOR ARTISTS...

WHAT KIND OF VEKTOR SOFTWARES DO YOU CURRENTLY USE? I’ve always used Illustrator. Is there any other real professional choice these days?

HOW DO YOU WORK FROM CONCEPT TO THE FINAL ARTWORK? All my work is produced digitally, but before I go near the computer I start doodling ideas and compositions in an A5 sketchbook with a pencil or biro. These are very quick and throwaway. Once I worked out the rough idea and composition & gathered any visual reference I might need, I work on a larger finished pencil drawing, which I then use as a guide for drawing the final artwork with a graphics tablet in Adobe Illustrator. I think it’s important to keep the hands on feel with my work, despite producing the final artwork on the computer.

COULD YOU TELL US THE CREATIVE PROCESS? It’s important to give myself enough thinking & doodling time at the beginning of a project before producing a finished rough drawing. That’s where the real hard work is done & is the foundation of a great piece of work. After that, it’s producing the final artwork in Illustrator & usually there’s not a great deal of change compositionally from rough to final artwork.

WHAT ARE THE PROJEKTS YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’ve just finished the visitor’s site map for one or the UK’s major theme parks which is very detailed & accurate. It was quite a challenging project & involved a lot of photo reference & a site visit to get the feel right. It’ll be very satisfying to see the artwork across the signage of the park & in the hands of all the visitors in the spring.

Somewhere along the way I was seduced into a 14 year career in advertising. I worked my way up from the bottom at well known agencies like Cossette, Weis, and The Hive Strategic Marketing Inc. I have had the pleasure of building brands for the likes of CocaCola, Miller Genuine Draft and Nestlé. However, my love affair with advertising has certainly worn off as I have entered my golden years (36).

COULD YOU SHARE WITH US THE HISTORY BEHIND WWW.VECTORVAULT.COM? I was looking for a vehicle to satisfy my love for design and art, but I just kept falling back into advertising. Vector art helped me find my true passion: Inspiring people. So for the past 2 and half years I have dedicated myself to build a community that I would want to belong to myself.

WHAT DOES THE NAME MEAN? The name Vectorvault comes from two words: Vector (my favorite file format) and Vault (a place where you store things). Together they describe a destination for everything that the world of vector art has to offer. The key to unlock it’s potential is summed up perfectly in our tag line: “Your imagination is the combination”.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT VEKTOR GRAPHICS? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? For me it’s the detail. I’m a huge fan of Adobe Illustrator. I like the flexibility that it gives me to work with vectors. I can make changes quickly and never loose any resolution. Vectors have a specific look and feel that is unique. I feel like I’m drawing on a piece of paper sometimes because the format is so comfortable to work with.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER OF VECTORVAULT? There are many. But the most important is the FREE daily download. Every day, we rotate a new file for members only. In addition, we also produce daily posts with helpful tutorials, artist profiles and interviews. We challenge ourselves to find the best examples of vector art in the world and then bring them to our members. This year we also launched the Vectorvault Store. WHAT ARE THE PROJEKTS YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I freelance from time to time with a group of companies on projects for Coca-Cola, Nestlé and several web based programs. However, my main focus now is building the products for the store and running the main site. It keeps me very busy.

ANY FUTURE PROJECTS ON VECTORVAULT THAT YOU CAN SHARE WITH US? 2009 is going to be very exciting. We’re launching a tutorial series created by Adobe certified trainer Paul Kelly. We are currently developing a line of 3D stock art and even a line of fitness videos aimed at getting your body in shape by using the environment around you. The end goal is to tie all of our products and services into one community site. One where members can upload content, share ideas and make connections. This year, I think you’ll start to hear lots of great things about Vectorvault.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? People who say they are going to do something and then do it. I love innovators and those who are doing things for other people. Every day I gain inspiration from my family. I use that energy to try and get others excited about art and the people who create it.

ANY TIPS/TRICKS FOR VEKTORLOVER OUT THERE TO CREATE SUCH A GREAT VEKTOR ARTWERKS LIKE YOURS? I don’t have any tricks, but I can leave you with a tip: 2009 is a special year. For many, the future looks uncertain. Some will “hope” that things get better and others will make it happen. My advice is to set a goal and then pursue it with passion. Don’t stop until you reach it. “Inspiration does exist, but it must find you working.” - Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF VEKTORJUNKIE.COM? Vektorjunkie is a perfect example. For many (including me), this is where inspiration begins. When you see such a diverse pool of talent collected in one place, your creativity is automatically activated. I love to learn about new artists. Vectorjunkie is a great resource.

VEKTORIKA | INTERVIEW PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND TELL US LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. Luke Feldman, the creator of SKAFFS (www.skaffs.com) is an Australian artist who creates for a multitude of platforms. Inspired by childhood experiences and a vivid imagination, his illustrations and animations are distinctive with defined lines, elaborate detail, and intensely vibrant colours. SKAFFS is a collection of work made up of art, animation, games, books, giant vinyl adhesives, skate decks and collector toys. Luke’s vast technical experience and skills developed working in numerous mediums. He studied Visual Arts and Multimedia in Australia and has worked in the gaming, education and animation industry. While the scope of his work is extensive, it is bound together through his unique and dynamic style; a style that has led to a number of awards, exhibitions and collaborations with high profile artists including Theodore Geisel and Maurice Sendak and companies such as Disney, Coca-Cola, Facebook.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I am originally from Warrnambool, Victoria. I spent most of my schooling in Geelong and launched my career in Melbourne. Melbourne is definitely considered home to me.

COULD YOU SHARE WITH US THE HISTORY BEHIND WWW.SKAFFS.COM? SKAFFS is a world made up of wonderfully weird and vibrant creatures and environments. The name came to me one early morning. It is a play on the word “scaffolding” as it represents the foundation for this fantastical world. SKAFFS is a collection of vibrantly coloured artwork, giant vinyl adhesives, collector toys, skate decks and other fun paraphernalia.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT VEKTOR GRAPHIK? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? Vector work can be used for multi-formats such as print, web, and animation. You can create super clean lines and vibrant colours. The work can be easily shared with a wider audience as opposed to an original piece of artwork.

WHAT KIND OF VEKTOR SOFTWARES DO YOU CURRENTLY USE? Illustrator, PhotoShop, After Effects, Flash.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? My style would be defined as vibrant, curvaceous, symmetrical with a sense of flow. I often like to represent contrasts whereby a naive character may be surrounded by harsh environments. I enjoy the challenge of adapting my style to different mediums. And having had the chance to work in such a variety has definitely opened up opportunities to me.

HOW DO YOU WORK FROM CONCEPT TO THE FINAL ARTWERK? Whether I am working on an illustration, animation or a piece of acrylic art, they all start off as a sketch. Drawing plays a vital role in my whole process and therefore I practice every day. I carry around my trusty sketchbook at all times. I never know when an idea will pop into my head and often it is at the wee hours of the morning.

COULD YOU TELL US THE CREATIVE PROCESS? If I am working on a digital piece, I scan the sketched image into my Cannon Scanner and import the image into my Mac PowerBook. I then use Illustrator, Photoshop or Flash to develop an illustration or animation. To avoid long hours of stress on my hands, I use a Wacom INTUOS graphics tablet. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extremely satisfying to see a raw sketch transform into a final piece of art, editorial illustration or animation.

ANY FUTURE PROJEKTS YOU CAN SHARE WITH US? I am currently working on my own animated series and that has been a really interesting yet challenging experience. Interesting to see how it comes together with the story creation, storyboards, animatics, but challenging with all the hurdles one has to overcome to produce an animated series for television! I also continue to collaborate with other artists and progressive companies to expand the SKAFFS product line.

ANY FAVORITES PROJEKT? In 2008, I had the opportunity to design a 1-storey high booth at the MAC World Conference in San Francisco. Working with Plasq (www.plasq.com) I was able to design the booth with a jungle theme. Having the opportunity to see my designs printed out so large and formed into furniture was an awesome experience. Last year, my short film ‘Who Saved the Moon’ was featured as a finalist at the International Independent Film Festival at the Comic-Con convention in San Diego. WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ARTISTS OR DESIGNERS? I have always been a big fan of surrealism and artists such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and MC Escher. Tim Burton’s dark and unique characters as well as his narrative style are always inspiring. I have always been fascinated by Dr Suess’ quirky illustrations and story telling. I’m also a massive fan of Asian art and culture.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? The idea of creating something from nothing to a finished piece of work, inspires me. My bizarre creations are the result of the quirky little things that happen throughout my life.

ANY TIPS/TRICKS FOR VEKTORLOVER OUT THERE TO CREATE SUCH A GREAT VEKTOR ARTWERKS LIKE YOURS? My advice to aspiring illustrators would be to establish a style, practice, and stick with it. Get involved in the local community and start exhibiting.
