CARDIFF SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY BSc (HONS) UCAS Code: W290 Entry requirements: Minimum Tariff: 280 points from at least two A levels or equivalent. This exciting vocational course allows graduates to follow a career as a professional architectural technologist, working alongside architects and other construction professionals on the design of new projects or the refurbishment and repair of existing buildings Most qualified architectural technologists work in private practice, although there are opportunities to work in other organisations that have their own design teams, such as building contractors or large corporate companies. Graduates can also pursue careers in related areas such as project management or architectural conservation. Year one: You will be introduced to the core subjects of building technology, materials and architectural science. You will develop skills in CAD visualisation and modelling, hand drawing and presentation. Year two: You will cover further building technology and subjects, including building contract law and economics. There is a greater emphasis on relating theory to practice and integrating acquired knowledge through design projects. You will continue to develop studio skills with a particular emphasis on the use of Building Information Modelling and environmental modelling software. There will also be a major design project, allowing students to develop a design from a client’s brief through to presentation and detailing.

In 2013, students on BSc Architectural Design and Technology engaged with the urban regeneration company Newport Unlimited. Speaking to final year students, Hamish Munro, the Head of Regeneration for the company identified a riverside site in Newport as a potential development location. After a studying and analysing the site and its location, the students then proceeded to design and detail a host of exciting schemes ranging from hotels and offices to museums and laboratories. In July 2012 CADW purchased a traditional valleys terraced house in Cwmdare, “almost completely unaltered inside and out since it was built in 1854” . CADW have sought assistance from CSAD Architectural Studies staff in developing and delivering the programme of sympathetic repair and improvement over the next two years. The intention is that this project will be publicised as an exemplar of best practice.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY HND UCAS Code: 12KW

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

CARDIFF SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY AT CSAD The way in which buildings are designed is changing rapidly. Innovative new building materials and techniques are appearing almost daily. New buildings need to meet ever more stringent environmental standards. The importance of conserving and upgrading our existing buildings has become increasingly evident. Whether we are designing new buildings or working with our existing built heritage, Architectural Design and Technology in Cardiff Metropolitan University concentrates on excellence in technical detailing, coupled with a rigorous approach to sustainability and the minimization of environmental impact. We are looking for inquiring and creative people who will work with, and be inspired by, our team of enthusiastic, talented and experienced staff. Course activity is centred on our well-equipped studios - lively and stimulating spaces where students and tutors interact in a variety of different ways; some formal, others more relaxed, but all designed to encourage creative and analytical thinking.

MASTERS OPPORTUNITIES

MPHIL AND PHD

Students who have completed the BSc Architectural Design and Technology could consider the following opportunities for study at Masters level:

The Ecological Built Environment Research & Enterprise unit based in Cardiff School of Art and Design is engaged in a wide range of research projects involving sustainable architectural design and technology. Opportunities will exist for those graduates who show the potential to study for research degrees and professional doctorates in the school. The PhDs and Professional Doctorates currently being studied include:

MDES With emphasis on practice, the MDes is intended for those who have, and wish to maintain, a career in any form of professional design practice. The MDes provides an opportunity for advanced design study in the context of a professional situation and will be attractive to graduates in employment who would like to study for a higher degree; employers who are seeking a means to develop their staff and: design entrepreneurs seeking intellectual support in the development of a design idea.

• Sustainable retrofit detailing for Victorian terraced housing. • Earth tubes for heating and cooling. • Sustainable procurement for large scale projects. • Biomass CHP optimization. • Low carbon skills for construction site operatives. • Ecological assessment tools for self builders. • Investigating and testing traditional and ecological building adaptation strategies.

You will learn about different building techniques, materials and other factors that impact on the technical design of buildings. The course enables students to develop key presentational skills, including the use of computer-aided design (CAD) and apply a creative attitude to the detailed design of projects. You will also develop an appreciation of the historical context of architectural design; will learn the values of environmentally responsive building design and study innovative building techniques. You may start the course with a simple desire to design buildings – but we trust you will leave with the knowledge, skills and passion to begin to change our world for the better.
