ow do you guarantee that an event commemorating Memorial Day will be moving? By including temporary flags and a traveling replica (half-size) of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. A service organization has drawn the Moving Wall to a park in Westerville, where it is being showcased this holiday weekend with as many as 2,000 U.S. flags. The patriotic display, which will open with a ceremony at 10 a.m. today and run through Monday afternoon, is expected to attract thousands of visitors to outdoor playing fields at N. Cleveland Avenue and County Line Road, according to Patrick J. Knott, president of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Westerville, the event sponsor. Free and open to the public day and night, thanks to portable lighting, the display will have community volunteers providing information and supervision. “It’s a wonderful family event,” club spokeswoman Barbara Gizzo said. Child actor starred in ’70s sitcom

Happenstance plays role in sharp entry

By Jennifer Dobner ASSOCIATED PRESS

PROVO, Utah — Gary Coleman, the child star of the successful 1970s sitcom Diff’rent Strokes whose later career was marred by medical and legal problems, has died after falling and suffering from a brain hemorrhage. He was 42. The fall occurred Wednesday at his home, 55 miles south of Salt Lake City. A statement from the family said he remained conscious and lucid until midday Thursday, when his condition worsened and he slipped into unconsciousness. Coleman was then placed on life support, which was termi-

Success came swiftly for Judith Steele. The winner of the 41st Dispatch Caption-Writing Contest might not have entered the race if she hadn’t recently visited an East Side gallery where Jeff Stahler, creator of the Moderately Confused cartoon, was making an Judith Steele appearance. While there, she saw a copy of the “blank” panel of a woman having coffee with a fuzzy man. She quickly thought of an idea. “I work in the field of interior design, incorporating graphic design, print materials

It worked perfectly.” Would she try again? “Sure,” Steele said, “but I may have already had my moment in the sun.” To read her kicker, see Page D5.

I teach eighth grade. When I tell people what I do for a living, I typically hear something along these lines: Oh, my! Eighth grade — that’s a tough one. How do you do it? Actually, it’s not so tough. My students at St. Agatha School probably inspire me more than I do them. The conversations and the camaraderie we share are priceless — whether we’re reading classic literature or recounting TEE the latest Glee WHITMAN episode, whether we’re dissecting grammar or talking up the hottest Taylor Swift song, whether we’re discussing morality or anticipating March Madness. Tough? More like enjoyable. On Monday mornings in the fall, boys and girls alike gather around my desk to recap the weekend in college football. By December, we’re debating the merits of the Bowl Championship Series versus a playoff system. Such regular dialogue relating to their world seems to excite and motivate them. Once my students realize that I respect and enjoy what they appreciate, the teaching becomes easier. As young teenagers, eighthgraders spend the school year striving for independence even as they still welcome guidance in the choices they make. I, in turn, welcome the challenges they bring me. We laugh together often and, yes, occasionally cry together. At the end of the day, after all, they’re my kids. Like Jem in To Kill a Mockingbird (a novel we recently finished), my students are beginning to break ties with childhood as they move toward adulthood. Approaching the end of the school year as we are now — well, that’s tough. The students are eager to move on to high school yet somewhat apprehensive about leaving the comforts of a school that some have attended for nine years. Watching them grow up and blossom is incredibly rewarding, but it also complicates goodbyes — especially this year. At graduation time, my principal always asks me for adjectives to describe my eighth-graders. The Class of 2010? Easy, funloving, enthusiastic, prayerful, supportive, helpful, loyal — the list goes on. These students form one “together” class. (The notion scares me, as graduation usually coincides with my birthday and the kids inevitably find an ingenious way to proclaim it — in my yard.) In saying goodbye and good luck to one more eighth grade, I can only hope that the students will stay in touch. Maybe some will continue to ride past my house on their bikes during the summer and say “Hey” if I’m working in the garden. Or stop me after Mass to let me know what they’re up to. Or visit me at school next year to tell me how high school is going. I will cherish the memories made with the Class of 2010. And, as August rolls around and I prepare for a fresh set of eighth-graders, I will look forward to new memories with the Class of 2011. With any luck, the newcomers will quickly learn — as this year’s graduates did — that one way to this teacher’s heart runs through Red Vines licorice! Tee Whitman, 52, of Upper Arlington will send off her 24th class of eighth-graders Wednesday evening at graduation.

Sunscreen to be labeled in simplified way by fall WASHINGTON (AP) — A clearer standard for sunscreen labels is coming to a lotion near you, but not in time for the summer beach season that kicks off this weekend. The Food and Drug Administration is working to finish new labeling rules — years in the making — but not before October. The current system for sunscreen products is confusing, concedes Dr. James Spencer, spokesman for the American Academy of Dermatology. The rules expected in the fall would use a standard testing protocol and spell out protection levels as “low,” “medium,” “high” or “highest.” Spencer, a dermatologist in St. Petersburg, Fla., says people need to slather on plenty of sunscreen — a shot glass full of lotion for adults.

Gail Canini of Westerville was one of the first to see the display. “I grew up in this era and just remember all the upheaval and protests,” said the 59-year-old as she slowly walked the length of the wall early yesterday. “It was just a sad time for me.

Sponsors, who get to keep the flags, can pick them up after volunteers remove them Monday afternoon. “It’s important to perpetuate the memory of people and to remember our history,” said Don Denton, an 80-year-old Air Force veteran who served in England in the 1950s and helped set up flags yesterday. “We volunteer to honor heroes — anyone we think is worthy.” The weekend events, Gizzo said, are part of a service project — with any profits donated to the Westerville Firefighters Memorial at First Responders Park, by the firehouse on W. Main Street. The memorial includes a 4,000-pound steel beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center, one of the targets in the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001. jsheban@dispatch.com

“It hurts to think of all the heartache” represented by the names, she added. “These people have given their lives, and I just feel like giving my respect to them.” The flags — part of a second-year event called “Field of Heroes” — are intended to honor not only military personnel but also everyday heroes. “It can be any hero in your life — a loved one who battled cancer or a teacher who helped you change your life,” Gizzo said. The 3-by-5-foot banners hang from 8-foot poles lined up on the playing fields, creating a maze of red, white and blue. Visitors are encouraged to take their time and wander. “Last year, there were fender benders” as motorists gawked at the display, Gizzo said. For $30, anyone can sponsor a flag.
